Some more book fanart! This is David and Noah(aka Miss Penelope Primrose) from the wonderful book A Rulebook for Restless Rogues by Jess Everlee 🥰💕 I am just never going to stop reading queer historical romances... It's in my blood! 😝 I'm also a huge lover of historical women's fashion, so obviously I had to take the opportunity here to draw Noah in a lovely 1880s dress, complete with bustle 🤭 I absolutely ADORED these two, and cannot wait for the next book in the series!! 💕💖

Lucky Lovers of London by Jess Everlee
Tumblr media
A truly delightful series of dual-pov queer period romances. I devoured all three of these books in a matter of days, though A Bluestocking's Guide to Decadence was BY FAR my favourite. There is gorgeous representation and steamy love stories and all three are decidedly different, though they take place in the same universe. I hope the author continues to write, because there are many side characters among the stories whom I would love to get to know more.
In terms of representation, there is cross-dressing and gay and bi characters, trans characters and sapphics. There's lavender marriages and unconventional relationships and found family, too. You don't need to read one to read the others, though all the characters live in each other's stories, so some chronology might be off if you read them in a different order.
Vices is quite steamy and quite a bit more bdsm in the sex scenes than the other two, a man meets the author of his favourite illicit novel and, well, you know.
Rogues is a friends-to-lovers, ripe with both characters making assumptions (and making arses of themselves), and it spans decades, often switching between the past and the present to add context.
Decadence is a chance meeting between two unlikely women, more alike and complementary than they might seem at first.
Highly recommend them all, 4.5/5 ⭐️ across the board.

ARC Review - A Rulebook for Restless Rogues
Hello, everyone! Today I’m reviewing A Rulebook for Restless Rogues by Jess Everlee. I enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to get my hands on this follow up. Jess Everlee follows up her sparkling debut The Gentleman’s Book of Vices with this charming queer historical romp, in which two lifelong best friends find romance as they join forces to save the one place where they can…

"Radically reimagining queer joy is the project of the best queer historical romance books.
Historical research and fantasy are the founding pillars of historical romance. There are certain things about the past that any historical romance is willing to hand-wave away. In return, readers of the genre buy into that imagined past.
Queer historical romance is perhaps more radical in its approach. Not because it is less historically accurate than any other historical romance but because it works against the myth that queer people never existed in the past.
Patriarchy, Teleology, and Queer Historical Romance
Patriarchy and teleology undoubtedly work against queer historical romance. The teleological view of history is the idea that history works in a forward march of progress to a single unified goal. Teleology works against historical romance’s aim to humanize people from the past. The genre gives characters access to joy and agency that often feels anachronistic, especially to readers unfamiliar with the periods.
Pair teleology with a frankly overwhelming body of historians using patriarchal lenses to interpret history, and many dismiss all historical romance as entirely inaccurate. Not to mention, a general de-prioritization of joy and the humanization of people throughout history complicates the idea that everyone should view the past one way.
As historical romance books continue to include queer and BIPOC characters, arguments of historical inaccuracy continue to pile onto the genre. Queer historical romance rejects the claim, “In the before times, things were bad, everyone was horrible, and queer people or non-white people didn’t have power.”
So, while all historical fiction will include fiction by its genre category alone, diverse historical romance bears the brunt of historical inaccuracy claims.
What Makes a Great Queer Historical Romance?
So maybe it is unsurprising that I love queer historical romance quite so much. It’s radical, fun, engrossing, and sometimes downright silly.
Selecting just a dozen books to feature in this list was difficult, especially when so many queer historical romance authors have excellent backlists. If I were you, I would start with the twelve best queer historical romance books here and then go into each other’s backlist for an even better time."

Ten people I’d like to get to know better
tagged by: @simonthesneasnake (thank you for tagging me, and also you have a fantastic username!)
last song: I Want Her by Blind Truth
favourite colour: I have many, but lately I have been very into periwinkle and forest green
last book: A Rulebook for Restless Rogues, which I got as a blind book at my local bookstore. I'm about halfway through and it's fun so far!
last movie: But I'm a Cheerleader, like a month and a half ago, bc I don't watch a lot of movies. it was my pick for movie night and it's one of the first gay movies I ever saw and I love it to this day! Very cute and fun to watch with friends.
last tv show: Dandadan, which is a very weird but good anime about urban myths and aliens. it also has a killer theme song which is almost always stuck in my head, so. that could be good or bad.
sweet/spicy/savoury: savoury > sweet > spicy (I have very low spice tolerance, if you give me too much spicy I will die. A little bit is good tho!)
relationship status: dating my beloved partner for 6 months as of tomorrow <3
last thing I googled: recipe for sweet potato fries, bc I couldn't remember how long to cook them.
current obsession: I wanted to say a fandom but honestly my current obsession is scrapbooking, I decided to do one for my hiking trips this fall and went crazy on it. I am slowly morphing into a grandma. In the brief moments i've managed to do something that is not cross stitch or working on gifts for people, I've been doing critrole stuff, so that's probably peak fandom obsession atm.
looking forward to: being done with the somewhat complicated cross stitch I decided to make my boyfriend for christmas! I'm excited for how it's gonna come together and I can't wait for them to see it <3 also, dinner and anime with them and their partner on Thursday, and going to get hot pot on Saturday!
tagging (even though for some of you I know the answers!) but only if you wanna do it: @vgoblin @miraculan-draws @quinn-of-aebradore @brief-lives @scrumpylikesthings @jewishzevran @petrabasil @charismaticalpaca @biorust-art @bluegreenamber

Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out by Ryan Love - 3/5 stars
The Fate of Stars by SD Simper - DNF at pg 32
A Gathering Storm by Joanna Chambers - 4.75/5 stars
I kept getting the Madame Leota room from Haunted Mansion stuck in my head as I was reading this (not a bad thing!). This book has a surprisingly low rating on the Storygraph, and I'm not going to torture myself by looking at the reviews, but I'm assuming it's because of the power discrepancy between Ward and Nick. Clearly it didn't bother me as I really enjoyed the book!
Dionysus in Wisconsin by EH Lupton - 4.75/5 stars
At some point I might get tired of Mid-Century Modern romances, but not this day. This book was super fun, with an interesting world and lovely characters. And a Midwest setting! I've spent a lot of time in Madison, Wisconsin, where this book is set, so I got the added bonus of knowing most of the places pretty well. There was even a shoutout to an obscure piece of Madison history, the Lost City in the Arb. I have to get the second book in the series now!boy
Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan - 3.25/5 stars
I gave this book an extra quarter of a star for being written in 2003, when it would have been genuinely pretty groundbreaking. Reading it in 2024, it's very twee and pretty cringey (the queer utopia town would have been a magical fantasy in 2003, not so much now in a lot of places). When Levithan credited Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat books in the acknowledgements, I though, ah. No wonder. Hated those as a teen.
All that said, there's some genuinely lovely writing in this book, and it has its place in the queer canon.
The Greywacke by Nick Davidson - 5/5 stars
Super interesting nonfiction about the discipline of geology and how the early geologic epochs were figured out. Also gave me an idea for a historical romance about gay Victorian geologists.
Home Grown Talent by Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm - 5/5 stars
I think I loved this one more than the first in the series. The social media scandal was perfect, in that it was exactly as absurd as every social media scandal is, and thus hilarious, but also chilling in how even something so stupid can ruin people's lives.
The First Bright Thing by JR Dawson - DNF at pg 1
Prince of the Sorrows by Kellen Graves - DNF at pg 30
Reuben's Hot & Cold by M Arbon - 3/5 stars
Slight Foxing Around the Edges by Melissa Polk - DNF at pg 132
Restored by Joanna Chambers - 5/5 stars
Balefire by Jordan L Hawk - 4.75/5 stars
A Rulebook for Restless Rogues by Jess Everlee - 4/5 stars
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley - 5/5 stars
See my brain vomit about this book here. If you've been around here for any amount of time you know all Natasha Pulley's books make me feral. Absolutely no exception here. I cannot believe her first UK publisher dropped her over this book. Idiots! It's wonderful just like everything she's ever written.
In the Case of Heartbreak by Courtney Kaye - DNF at pg 181
The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason - DNF at pg 21
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun - 5/5 stars (reread)
Just as good as the first time I read it!
Exhalation by Ted Chiang - 4.5/5 stars
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic - DNF at pg 84
Crisped + Sere by TJ Klune - 4.75/5 stars
It actually kind of makes me mad that this series isn't Klune's most famous work, because it's real good. At this point it seems kind of unlikely he's going to continue it, but man, I'd love another book.
These Silent Stars by Chani Lynn Feener - DNF at pg 68
Trailer Park Trickster by David R Slayton - 5/5 stars
See below.
Deadbeat Druid by David R Slayton - David R Slayton - 5/5 star
I LOVE this series. Love love love love. Absolute must read. If you're a fan of KD Edwards's The Tarot Sequence, this series is right up your alley. It seems like there will be more after this initial trilogy, and there's also a spinoff book coming soon which I'm super excited for. Read them!!

Romance Roundup: Part 1
this summer, after succumbing to my knitting injuries, i fell into a romance novel rabbit-hole. they are like candy for me. they're low-effort, fun, a quick source of joy, and keep me from endlessly scrolling jpost for israel news. also i can usually finish one in a day or two. so all in all, i ended up reading a total of 90 romance/kissing books.
the stats:
84 queer
13 novella-length
4 that i really feel i gave a fair shot but didn't finish
the top 7 (in no particular order):
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland- a fantasy book wherein the prince and his sworn bodyguard fall in love. some light (as in dangerous but not overly complex) political intrigue. plenty of world-building, but the author doesn't ever bore you with explanations you don't want. the writing is a little clumsy at times, but in spite of myself i found this book and the characters so utterly charming.
Enlightenment Trilogy (Provoked, Beguiled, and Enlightened) by Joanna Chambers- takes place in regency-late georgian scotland. two men who are dedicated to their respectable (but very different) lives. in order to keep what's important to them, they each plan to go through life just having anonymous, one-off encounters with other men, and needless to say, they upend that for one another. features radical politics, arguments about what matters in life, george iv's visit to scotland, and confronting your past. i thought about this extensively, but i simply do not think i can describe the plot in a way that will be helpful. you are just going to have to trust me. a linked short story and bonus-epilogue-novella are also availble on the author's website.
10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall- man sort of accidentally fakes amnesia to keep his asshole boss from firing everyone. only they end up sort of falling for each other for real. modern setting, funny and sad, and the kind of slow-burn romance that makes your chest hurt. it does take place over christmas, but not in a fluffy, christmassy way. like, even i, America's Number One Christmas Hater, who would never have touched it had i known about the christmas element going in, found it to be completely tolerable amount of christmas, and a thoroughly enjoyable book. i read everything on my top 7 list multiple times, but this is one that really rewards your second read-through.
Captive Prince Trilogy (Captive Prince, Prince's Gambit, and Kings Rising) by C.S. Pacat- fantasy setting wherein a prince is kidnapped and enslaved in an enemy realm, and eventually has to ally with his cruel captor in order to save his own kingdom. plenty of political maneuvering, military skirmishes, court intrigue, and secret night mission shenanigans (with disguises). another chest-aching slow burn that rewards multiple read-throughs. there's also a linked short story collection, The Summer Palace, which includes a bonus epilogue.
A Rulebook for Restless Rogues (book 2 in Lucky Lovers of London) by Jess Everlee- victorian-era romance, featuring drag, lifelong best friends, and some of the best (hottest) sex scenes on this list. the proprietor of an underground gentlemen's club for queer men fights to keep his club open and his people safe, both from the law and from the volatile aristocrat who owns the place. he also definitely doesn't have feelings for his best friend. anymore. probably.
England World (Think of England, and prequel Proper English) by KJ Charles- two excellent books; one a houseparty/treason investigation and one a houseparty turned murder mystery. as everyone knows, it's extremely dangerous to attend a houseparty while single, because you will fall hopelessly in love, but you will also be in mortal peril. i am. too fucking feral about these characters to say anything useful. i am completely aware that this does nothing to help my case, but i cannot help it. i am unable to be normal about them, even in the effort to convince people to read these books. also please note that even though the covers are. quite bad. the writing is excellent and well-researched. also also, there's a bonus epilogue on the author's website, featuring additional sex, good jokes, and bad poetry.
An Unnatural Vice (book 2 in Sins of the City) by KJ Charles- the whole trilogy is worth reading (in order!) but this is definitely the strongest of the 3, and i found it to be the most compelling of the romances. a victorian-era mystery/suspense series, featuring an inheritance plot, murders in the fog, and fake séances. a "spiritualist" who defrauds the wealthy and the investigative jouranlist determined to expose his tricks find themselves hate-fucking, running from murderers, arguing about class politics, and both saving and upending each others' lives.
honorable mention:
Sailor's Delight by Rose Lerner- #1 brain-rewiring book of the year. 1813 sailing master in the british royal navy and his naval agent fall in love. the book takes place over 1 week of shore leave (which coincides with the high holy days), although they have known each other (and known that they can never be together) for almost a decade. uh. listen. this book is both fun and well-researched, but it is not, like, Good™. there is a shirtless man on the cover and there's not even any fucking in the book. the main characters are named Elie and Augie which is completely unsexy. BUT. they changed my brain chemistry and i've plotted out their entire lives in my head from the moment they met and i'm fucking feral about them.

Book blurb: Love can make even the most buttoned-up bluestocking come undone…
London, 1885
A lesbian in a lavender marriage, Jo Smith cuts a dashing figure in pin-striped trousers, working in her bookshop and keeping impolite company. But her hard-earned stability is about to be upended thanks to her husband’s pregnant paramour, who needs medical attention that no reputable doctor will provide.
Enter Dr. Emily Clarke, a tantalizing bluestocking working at a quaint village hospital outside the city. Emily has reservations about getting mixed up in Jo’s scandalous arrangement, but her flustered, heart-racing response to Jo has her agreeing to help despite herself.
There’s a world of difference between Jo’s community of underground clubs and sapphic societies and Emily’s respectable suburbs. Perhaps it’s a gap that even fervent desire can’t bridge.
But for those bold enough to take the risk, who knows what delicious adventures might be in store…
Lucky Lovers of London
Book 1: The Gentleman's Book of Vices Book 2: A Rulebook for Restless Rogues Book 3: A Bluestocking's Guide to Decadence
Review:
A lesbian in a lavender marriage finds herself in a difficult situation when her husband's pregnant paramour needs medical help and the only doctor that will take them is the strict and slightly odd female doctor who keeps drawing her in. It is London, 1885 and Jo Smith is a lesbian in a lavender marriage. She spends her time wearing trousers and running her bookshop, yet this stable life is put into jeopardy when her husband gets his paramour pregnant and she needs medical help, they all know that no reputable doctor will help her... cue Dr. Emily Clarke. Emily is trying to make it as a female doctor in a society that is barely accepting female doctors. She is hesitant to take on Jo's case but can't resist. Despite their rocky start and polar opposite personalities, both Jo and Emily begin to fall for each other as they write letters to one another. Can they find a way to make it work in a society that isn't accepting of queer romances? This is the third book in the series but can absolutely be read as a standalone. I had really high hopes for this one because I liked the other two books but this one unfortunately missed the mark. I really wanted to like this one but it kind of felt meh to be honest. The premise of the book sounds so delightful and fun yet the actual plot and pacing felt a bit off to me. I just couldn't find myself invested or believing in the romance between Jo and Emily. Despite the book missing the mark for me, I do think that if you are looking for a historical sapphic romance with opposites attract, to give this one a go!
