But why did Bryan and other turn-of-the-century Democrats start advocating for big government?;

According to Rauchway, they, like Republicans, were trying to win the West. The admission of new western states to the union in the post-Civil War era created a new voting bloc, and both parties were vying for its attention.

To understand these changes, I compared the results of surveys conducted by the Internet survey firm YouGov in November 2017 and January 2020. The data were matched and weighted to be demographically representative of the adult U.S. population. The 2017 survey included 736 Republicans and 930 Democrats; the 2020 survey included 1,098 Republicans and 1,386 Democrats.

In 2017, Republicans and Democrats differed in their average ratings of President Trump by 5.8 points on a 10-point scale. By this January, the difference had grown significantly, to 6.7 points. The endpoints of the scale were labeled extremely unfavorable feelings and extremely favorable feelings. The share of Democrats who gave Trump a zero increased from 71 percent to 81 percent, while the share of Republicans who gave him a 10 increased from 28 percent to 48 percent.

At least 70% of both Republicans and Democrats overestimated how much the other group disliked and dehumanized their group.

Political polarization is a well-documented issue in the United States, and the schism between left and right can sometimes feel impossible to overcome. Often, peoples actions towards a group they are not part of are motivated not only by their perceptions of that group, but also by how they think that group perceives them. In the case of American politics, this means that the way Democrats act toward Republicans isnt just a result of what they think of Republicans but also of what they think Republicans think of Democrats, and vice versa.

The study,;, found that Democrats do not dislike or dehumanize Republicans as much as Republicans think they do, and Republicans do not dislike or dehumanize Democrats as much as Democrats think they do. Around 100 years ago, Democrats and Republicans switched their political stances.

The Republican and Democratic parties of the United States didn’t always stand for what they do today.;

During the 1860s, Republicans, who dominated northern states, orchestrated an ambitious expansion of federal power, helping to fund the transcontinental railroad, the state university system and the settlement of the West by homesteaders, and instating a national currency and protective tariff. Democrats, who dominated the South, opposed those measures.;

After the Civil War, Republicans passed laws that granted protections for Black Americans and advanced social justice. And again, Democrats largely opposed these apparent expansions of federal power.

Sound like an alternate universe? Fast forward to 1936.;

Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt won reelection that year on the strength of the New Deal, a set of Depression-remedying reforms including regulation of financial institutions, the founding of welfare and pension programs, infrastructure development and more. Roosevelt won in a landslide against Republican Alf Landon, who opposed these exercises of federal power.

So, sometime between the 1860s and 1936, the party of small government became the party of big government, and the party of big government became rhetorically committed to curbing federal power.;

Social media platforms provide us a personalized way to receive news and commentary from anyone and everyone with whom we are connected. In theory, this could mean that users see a cross section of their community’s political views, representing the full range of perspectives within their network. Unfortunately, our study’s findings paint a less encouraging picture. First, only 26% of American report sharing social media posts about politics. Second, these Americans have higher Perception Gaps than the national average. While those who do not post on social media have an average Perception Gap of 18, those who do post on social media have an average Perception Gap of 29. The political content we see on social media is therefore disproportionately from people with a more distorted understanding of the other side, further adding to the problem.

Republicans And Democrats Have Different Views About Compromising With The Other Party

Overall, Republicans are divided over whether Donald Trump should focus on finding common ground with Democrats, even if that means giving up some things Republicans want, or pushing hard for GOP policies, even if it means less gets done. While 53% of Republicans say Trump should push hard for the partys policies, 45% say its more important for the president to find common ground with Democrats.

However, politically attentive Republicans broadly oppose Trump seeking compromise with Democrats even if it means giving up some things Republicans want. Just 39% of Republicans who follow government and public affairs most of the time say it is more important for Trump to find common ground with Democrats; 61% say he should push hard for GOP policies. Opinion is more evenly divided among less politically attentive Republicans.

Democrats, who were asked a hypothetical version of the question about the partys 2020 presidential candidates, are more open to potential compromise with Republicans. About six-in-ten Democrats say it is more important for a candidate, if elected, to find common ground with Republicans even if it means giving up things Democrats want.

There are no differences in these views among Democrats based on political attentiveness. But liberal Democrats are less likely than conservative and moderate Democrats to say it is more important for a candidate to seek compromises with Republicans.

S.S. Hereward aground.

She was a full ship iron clipper built in 1877. It was shipwrecked on Maroubra Beach, Sydney on Thursday 5 May 1898.

The Hereward was wrecked while travelling from Sourabaya, a port in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) to Newcastle, New South Wales where it had to take on a load of coal for South America. While travelling north along the New South Wales coast on 5 May, it encountered a large storm with wind speeds as high as 47 miles per hour (76 km/h). The winds destroyed the sails of the ship and blew it towards the shore leaving the captain, Captain Gore, unable to avert the disaster. The Hereward was forced onto the northern end of Maroubra Beach, however it avoided the two rocky reefs present there. All 25 crew members were safely brought ashore and made their way to the nearby wool scouring works to make the shipwreck known. (wikipedia)

Curacao is a Dutch Caribbean Island located approximately 40 miles north of the Venezuelan coast. It is the biggest island of the ABC islands. It is also the center, between Aruba and Bonaire. Curacao is part of the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The culture of the island closely resembles other Caribbean islands as well as Dutch culture. The island life is combined with the building structure, food, and languages of the Dutch. It is a culturally diverse island and very large tourist attraction.

Inhabitants of the island generally speak about four languages: English, Dutch, Papiamentu, and Spanish. The most prominent religion of the island is Roman Catholic, about eight one percent of the population. Judaism, Methodism, and Anglicanism have much less of an influence among the island. The Netherlands Antillean Guilder is the current currency used on the island. One guilder is about 56 cent in USD. It is planned to be replaced by the newly created Caribbean Guilder in the future.

The food is mostly variations of Caribbean Creole cuisines. Due to tourism being a huge factor in the island’s economy and cultural, many traditional ways have become more open and accepting to international tendencies. For example, the food in the most touristy areas of the island are far more diverse than you will even see at home. Mambo Beach in the capital Willemstad, has some of the most diverse cuisines I have ever seen. Along the boardwalk you will see Mexican, Dutch, Italian, Mediterranean, Japanese, and American food. They have snack bars to steak houses and even a dance club within such a small radius. For the endless amount of tourists at the resorts and the incoming cruise ships, this is delectable.

The government of Curacao is a Constitutional Monarchy. Curacao is a constituency country that has a parliamentary representative democracy. There are three levels in which the government operates. The kingdom of the Netherlands which governs the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba; the Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire and Curacao); and the territories of the three major islands and the two smaller uninhabited islands of Curacao and Bonaire. There are military camps on Aruba and Curacao that are intended to protect the islands and their surrounding waters. There is also the Coast Guard of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba to protect the territorial waters from drug trafficking.

The highly diversified island still has the different defining social and economic classes. Unemployment is high for the original inhabitants of Curacao, and even higher for the Latin American and Caribbean immigrants. The Dutch hold the higher of employment rates especially dealing with customer service in the touristy areas. Having material luxury goods such as cars and houses display a person’s social and economic status on the island.

“Women's participation in the labor market has increased since the 1950s, but men still hold the most important positions throughout the economy. Women work mostly in sales and as nurses, teachers, and civil servants. Unemployment is higher for women than for men.” Immigrant women from Latin America and the Caribbean work as maids or in the tourism sector. The status of women on the island was mostly the head of the household and a provider for herself and her children, as the men were material providers for more than one household of their families.

Landhuis Brievengat was one of the largest plantations on the island, dating back to 1750 with 500 hectares, where they grew aloe and bred cattle. It was devastated by a hurricane in 1877 and then donated to a heritage foundation. Once restored to its “former grandeur” it was opened to the public as a sort of museum. Mikve Israel-Emmanuel Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. It is over 280 years old and still is used by the vibrant Jewish community of Curacao.

The famous Blue Curacao Liqueur is made in the historic 19th century mansion Landhuis Chobolobo. The liqueur is Kosher certified, gluten free, GMO free, and held to strict clean and pure production standards. You can tour the distillery located near the capital, Willemstad and you can find the liqueur in many places all over the island.

Christoffel National Park is located on the Northwestern side of the island and is home to many unique species of plants and animals, including the Curacao White Tailed deer. There are eight hiking trails around the park, varying from levels of difficulty and time/length of hike. The desert island offers an astounding view from the top of the Christoffel Mountain. Another geographical landmark worth visiting is Shete Boka. It adjoins Christoffelpark covering the north shore of the island. With a beautiful rocky wave exposed coast, pocket beaches where sea turtles lay eggs, and caves all along the hikes.

Curacao also offers many other attractions worth looking into, like the ostrich farm, klein curacao trips, many beaches along the south side, and beautiful buildings and architecture in the city of Willemstad. But the most popular and most astounding attraction of Curacao is the scuba diving and snorkeling around the reefs and beaches of the island. Even the small little inlets are teeming with various colorful sea life. The shores are overflowing with life and color in the sea. Although conditions have diminished slightly in the past years, actions are being taken to preserve the sea life and the wonderful coral reefs along the islands.

Curacao is a beautiful and diverse island with endless things to do and beautiful locations to see. Understanding the structure of the island’s culture and government will make any sort of visit to the island easier and stress free. Knowing as much as you can about the place you will be visiting is always beneficial, but actually experiencing the culture and social interactions in the place is much more fulfilling and provides understanding far beyond what anyone or thing can express. Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel is a small island floating on the Gulf of Saint Malo on the west coast of France and a monastery towering above it. Also referred to as Mont Saint Michel. It is one of the Catholic pilgrimage sites and is called "Western Wonders". In 1979, it was registered as "Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay" as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage), and in October 1994 It became a Ramsar site. The Bay of Saint Malo, close to the border with Brittany in the southern Normandy region, is also known as one of the places where the tide varies most steeply in Europe. The difference between the tides is more than 15 meters. For this reason, a rocky islet built by a monastery located in the southeastern part of the bay once floated on the sea at high tide and was connected to the land by an overpass that appeared naturally at ebb tide (Tidal Island). At the entrance of the island, there is a sign indicating the ebb and flow of the tide. The largest tide is said to be 28-36 hours after the full moon and the new moon, and the tide, which reaches 18 km offshore due to the ebb tide, surges at a furious speed. For this reason, many pilgrims used to be said to have been killed by the tide, saying, "If you go to Mont-Saint-Michel, leave your will." In 1877, a continuous road was created between the opposite shores, allowing the island to cross regardless of the tides. However, this has stopped the tide, and in 100 years 2 m of sand has been deposited. Rapid land conversion (land-linked islands) is progressing around the islands, and tides are seldom reaching just before the islands. Was demolished and a new bridge was completed in 2014. The main part is Gothic, but the interior is a mix of medieval architecture. The cathedral is Carolingian, the nave is Norman (11th-12th centuries), and the Romanesque squad, destroyed in 1421 after the Centennial War, is the Flambeauian Gothic (mid-15th to early 16th century). It was rebuilt. Surrounding these are a multi-storey monastery of the 13th century and military facilities of the 13th and 15th centuries. The Gothic Revival architectural bell tower and spire was completed in 1897, and a gold Michael statue with a sword and scale enshrined on it was created by the sculptor Emmanuel Flemier (French version). From the deep part, there are architectural remains that have been built over several layers on the rocky mountain. The island was originally called Mont Tomb (the mountain of tombs) and was a sacred place for indigenous Celts. In 708, Bishop Avranche Oberre was told in a dream by Archangel Michael that he should build a cathedral on this rocky mountain, but did not believe that it was a devil mischief. I had the same dream again, but did not believe again. Finally, for the third time, the Archangel lost his numbness, this time touching Oberre's forehead with his finger and ordering strongly, and Ober dreamed of lightning running in the brain. The next morning, when he put his hand on his head, he noticed that a hole had opened in his brain and was appalled, and here he built a chapel here, convinced that the statement of Archangel Michael was genuine. Is the beginning. In 966, Richard I of Normandy built a Benedictine monastery on the island, which was rebuilt and remodeled almost in its current form in the 13th century. Since the Middle Ages, it has attracted many pilgrims as a Catholic holy land.

A few meters from Bovbjerg Lighthouse, which by the way dates to 1877, you will see the impressive Bovbjerg Klint. It is the only place you can see a cross-section of ice age layers from the last two ice ages.

A very short walk will bring you from the lighthouse to Trans Church. Seen from the outside, is it an impressive sight, sitting on top of a steep rocky sandy beach, with stairs leading down to a stone pier. But oddly boring, when visiting the church inside.

Many people say that it is the most beautiful at this point on the west coast of Jutland. And I tend to agree, especially when the waves are plundering into the pier, and water is jetted into the air.

Romualdo Pacheco was adroit at bear-wrangling and politics alike, but in 1877 he faced a rocky road to the House of Representatives.

When Romualdo Pacheco walked up to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1877, he’d already served in nearly every government capacity in the still-new state of California. Now, the charismatic politician had broken another barrier as the first-ever Latino Congressman.

Pacheco brought with him a paper from the California Secretary of State that certified his election. But Pacheco was about to learn that not everyone agreed he’d been lawfully elected and the marble halls of the U.S. Capitol were filled with people who wanted him gone.

Pacheco Was Part of Wealthy Mexican Elite, the Californios

Romualdo Pacheco.

He was a familiar face in California, but relatively unknown in Washington. A sailor, hunter, rancher and astute politician, Pacheco was part of the wealthy Mexican elite, known as Californios, who had lived in and dominated California before it was acquired by the United States.

By the time Pacheco ran for Congress, the Californios were in decline. With the Gold Rush and the end of Mexican rule, white settlers had flooded the new state. They soon outnumbered former Mexican citizens, changing California’s economy and social structure. Not all Californios were eager to participate in the new political system.

As historian Rosaura Sánchez notes, many resented the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War and transferred Alta California to the United States. In the years after the treaty, Californios’ extensive land holdings were challenged and largely ceded. Those who did still own land experienced catastrophic droughts during the 1860s, explains Sánchez, and the ranch-based system they had created had crumbled in the face of urbanization. “This economic restructuring not only relocated the Californios within new social spaces but peripheralized them politically as well,” Sánchez writes.

Some Californios managed to ride out the waves of change. Among them was Pacheco, who was born into an elite Mexican family in Santa Barbara in 1831. An avid outdoorsman, he’d pledged his allegiance to the United States after a Mexican ship he captained was threatened by a U.S. Navy ship patrolling the Pacific coast.

Pancheco Had Political Clout in California, Not Washington

Bilingual and as comfortable in a formal drawing room as the outdoors, Pacheco was among the few Californios who created political power during his era. After the Mexican-American War, he began climbing the political ladder. He became a Republican before the Civil War due to his anti-slavery views, and within years of the Civil War had served in multiple government roles in the new state. He served a brief term as governor when Newton Booth was appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Pacheco may have found a political niche in his home state, but his bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives wasn’t a shoo-in. Though he ran to represent a large Southern California district that was majority Hispanic and sympathetic to his bid for office, he ran up against fierce opposition in the form of Peter D. Wigginton, the incumbent Democrat. Wigginton had the support of the newspapers and apparently, much of the public, and Pacheco squeaked by with only one vote.

Wigginton contested the election. The investigation prompted cries of voter irregularities, and Wigginton accused the Monterey county clerk of tampering with ballots. Wigginton also accused Pacheco of relying on votes from people who did not reside in the district in which they voted. Meanwhile, Pacheco found evidence that some votes for Wigginton were cast by “unnaturalized foreigners.”

Desperate to keep his narrow margin of victory, Pacheco petitioned the California Supreme Court, which conducted an investigation of its own and ruled in his favor. He was given a certificate that stated he had won the election and headed to Washington.

But someone else headed to Washington for the start of the October 1877 Congressional term: Wigginton’s fellow Democrats, who controlled Congress and wanted to get their candidate back in the seat. They protested Romualdo’s claim that he had won the election and sent the case to the Committee on Elections. James Garfield, an influential Republican, took up Pacheco’s cause and pushed through a resolution to let him take his seat. After a voice vote in his favor, Pacheco was sworn in in October 1877.

Dismissed From Congress, Then Re-Elected

Pacheco became the nation’s first Latino Congressman, then—three months after he took office—it was stripped from him. The Democrat-controlled Committee on Elections sided with their fellow Democrat, Wigginton, and threw out Pacheco’s electoral victory. “The House Elections Committee has earned the reputation of caring very little for law or equity when the interests of the Democratic Party are involved,” a New York Times article stated on January 14, 1878.

Though Pacheco’s case was cast as that of a no-name frontier politician engaged in a squabble over petty politics, he had already made his name on the national scene—just not for his political career.

Three years earlier, while serving as governor, readers of the New York Times had been treated to an article about another one of his skills: lassoing a bear. “He can lasso, and get away with, a wild grizzly bear,” wrote a California correspondent, “and we saw him do it.”

Pacheco had been dumped by the House of Representatives, but in 1875 Wigginton decided not to run for re-election. Pacheco did, and finally headed to Washington in 1879.

Though other Hispanic men had served as Congressional delegates before him, Pacheco was the first full Representative to claim Latino heritage. He remains the only Latino to have served as governor of the state of California—and lasso a grizzly.
