Captain America: Making of a War Hero into a Symbol of Hope
We all know that Captain America debuted in a title named after him by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941. He was seen punching Hitler right in the face but many may not know that this was done well before the US had decided to enter World War 2. In fact, at the time, the US was more concerned about its Pacific theater than the Atlantic. Nevertheless, Timely publishes the issue and Captain America gets established as a war hero from the start, who alongside his sidekick Bucky, is fighting fascism in continental Europe which is falling to the Reich like a house of cards
Cap at the time is the symbol of Freedom, anti-fascism, or as he would later be called the Sentinel of Liberty but there was one thing missing at Marvel. The House of Ideas lacked an inspiring figure like Superman among its flagship characters. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Invincible Iron Man, and even the Avengers had issues with themselves as well as with each other but a figure whom readers can look up to was something not present. Cap remained a 'man out of time' when he gets discovered by the Avengers but it takes a decade for writers to get him accustomed to the realities of America that were haunting the country from the streets to the Oval Office (Thank You, Jack Kirby and Steve Englehart)
Well into the bronze age era of comics, and under Jim Shooter's reign of the bullpen, a young J.M. DeMatteis shows his potential for storytelling with his first assignment of Captain America no. 261 which would introduce Nomad to the readers for the first time. This issue was supposed to be a collaboration with the real-life Captain America TV movie starring Reb Brown but Jim had other ideas. Issues 261-263 would find Steve Rogers going to California to meet Galactic Films for the upcoming movie about him (in Earth-616) but his real mission was to investigate Nomad's activities on the streets of LA which would turn out to be a deep conspiracy by one of his oldest arch nemesis
After becoming a regular writer on the Captain America series, DeMatteis, Mick Zeck, and John Beatty wrote a story that was way ahead of its time. Today's resurgence of the far left in the world and in the US and the reactionary rise of the far right was being seen by comic book writers like DeMatteis way before many had thought of it. Surprisingly it was a feeble populist villain by the name of Everyman doing the talk, not the Red Skull
In the story, the disenfranchised youth who looked up to Everyman realize their mistake of choosing 'despair over hope' but what causes them to see this is the humility Cap showed despite being spit at multiple times (literally). His eagerness to listen to the young, to the future of the country and their grievances with America, the American Dream leads to a change of heart
This single-issue story would showcase Cap in a different light. Steve Englehart had given Cap a rude awakening that patriotism can't come at the expense of truth and justice in Secret Empire. He showed Cap's disillusionment with the powers that be in America. DeMatteis took the opposite route to show Cap what's corrupting the country's future, and giving rise to the 'enemy within' who can cause anarchy. It wouldn't be wrong to say that Christopher Nolan's Bane (Dark Knight Rises) reminds us of Everyman but what's important to remember is that it was J.M. DeMatteis who warned us before anyone else did
This story is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire run by DeMatteis is one of the most underrated as it gets overshadowed by the works of Jack Kirby, Steve Englehart, and Mark Gruenwald. Like his works for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, his work for Cap remains one of the best runs ever

Hey y’all know how Brits like to argue about American cheese not being a real cheese and there’s a secondary debate as to whether it melts or not. I accidentally figured out that they’re not talking about American cheese AT ALL.
So there’s the most common brand of American cheese the Kraft Singles which seems weird compared to regular cheese because they’re slices of cheese made with added milk to make it all melty.
Exhibit A: The ingredients list from Kraft Singles
And then it turns out there’s this product packaged extremely like Kraft singles that might look like an off brand competitor if you don’t read the labels called “Imitation Cheese” that looks like
Exhibit B:
They are made with something called “Cheese analogues” which are “products used as culinary replacements for cheese. They are usually products made by blending other fats or proteins” and are designed not to met like normal cheese.
So people have been out here picking up imitation cheese and calling it American cheese because they probably assumed it was off brand Kraft singles and calling it garbage without knowing it’s an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PRODUCT!!!
#american cheese#american#imitation cheese#britsh#brits think American cheese and Imitation Cheese are the same and they’re not

THE BOB HOPE SHOW
May 3, 1949
“The Bob Hope Show” ~ After a dozen years as “The Pepsodent Show”, Pepsodent pulled its sponsorship in June 1948. Despite cancellation, Hope still continued on radio. Lever Brothers' Swan soap began sponsoring the show, which premiered on September 14, 1948 on NBC. Doris Day was the only one of Hope's former co-stars to continued to perform on the new show. Airing Tuesdays at 9, the program was at direct competition with the new sitcom “Life with Luigi”, which aired at the same time on CBS. “Life with Luigi” proved to be the season's new hit, crushing “The Bob Hope Show” in the ratings. Like Pepsodent before, due to the poor ratings, Swan pulled its sponsorship in 1950. The last Swan-sponsored episode of the program aired on June 13. On October 3, 1950 “The Bob Hope Show” premiered under the sponsorship of Chesterfield cigarettes. Over the next five years, it aired under various sponsors, including Jell-O and General Foods, in various timeslots until its final episode aired on April 21, 1955.
CAST
Bob Hope made his radio debut on NBC in May 1937. He became a top-rated fixture on Tuesday nights with his theme song, "Thanks for the Memories". His legendary broadcasts from military bases around the world helped boost American morale during the dark days of World War II. Over the years, his radio regulars included Jerry Colonna, Brenda and Cobina, Vera Vague, Wendall Niles, and orchestras led by Skinnay Ennis and Les Brown. Featured singers on the show included Judy Garland, Frances Langford, Doris Day, and Gloria Jean. Hope's radio career lasted well into the mid-1950s. By then, he had become a major movie and television star doing four films, and numerous television programs with Lucille Ball. He died on July 29, 2003, at the age of 100.
Lucille Ball was then a film star with her own weekly radio show, “My Favorite Husband”, which had just aired “Vacation Time” on April 29, 1949. Her new film with Bob Hope, Sorrowful Jones, would premiere in June 1949. In February 1949 she had made her first national TV appearance on “Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall”, quickly followed by an episode of “The Milton Berle Show.”
Doris Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown & His Band of Renown. She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967. Day was one of the biggest film stars in the 1950s and '60s. Surprisingly, Lucille Ball never acted opposite Doris Day in films or television, but she did interview her for her CBS radio show “Let’s Talk To Lucy” #144 on March 22, 1965. She died in 2019 at age 97.
Irene Ryan is the least remembered of Bob Hope’s female stooges. Her mousy Miss Ryan character told Hope week after week that she was, “Feeling about as well as could be expected,” before launching into a string of hypochondriac jokes. Irene Noblette and husband Tim Ryan went into radio in 1933 after a vaudeville and minor movie career. They kept busy in radio for ten years, four of them as stars of their own shows, including 1937's Royal Crown Revue. After their divorce in 1943, Irene kept the Ryan name and worked in some 20 low budget movie comedies and shorts plus occasional radio roles. While with Hope’s troupe she continued her screen work and drifted into occasional television roles in the 1950's. In 1962, at age 60 and ready to retire as a relative unknown, Irene Ryan was cast as “Granny” Daisy Mae Moses in a new television sitcom, “The Beverly Hillbillies”. The show was an immediate hit that endured for nine seasons on CBS-TV. In 1972, when she was 70, she co-starred on Broadway in the musical hit Pippin. She collapsed on stage a year later and died of a stroke, leaving a million dollars to the Irene Ryan Foundation which provides scholarships to collegiate acting students.
Bill Farrell was first spotted by Bob Hope in a night club in Buffalo, New York in 1947. Hope was impressed with Farrell's powerful baritone voice and smooth delivery and he invited Farrell to Hollywood. Hope featured him on his weekly radio show. In 1949 Farrell enjoyed a minor hit with his recording of "Circus" which reached #26 in the Billboard charts.
The Four Hits and A Miss consisted of four male singers and one female (thus the word "miss" in their name has a double meaning). They were variously known as Three Hits and A Miss, and even Six Hits and a Miss, as members came and went, mainly due to wartime service. They performed musical numbers in several Hollywood films of the 1940s.
The New Les Brown Band performed with Bob Hope on radio, stage and television for almost fifty years. They did 18 USO Tours, and entertained over three million people. The first film that Brown and the band appeared in was Seven Days' Leave (1942) starring Victor Mature and Lucille Ball.
Hy Averback (Announcer) played Charlie Appleby on “I Love Lucy” in “Baby Pictures” (ILL S3;E5), although the character would be re-cast with George O'Hanlon in season six. He played another Charlie, Charlie Pomerantz, in “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E21) on March 14, 1955. Averback transitioned from acting to directing, becoming Emmy nominated for “M*A*S*H.”
EPISODE
Bob Hope’s opening monologue includes top news of the day, including:
Russia starting to advertise on billboards.
Bob Hope’s return from his whirlwind tour.
Hope and Averback promote the “Swan CARE Campaign” delivering Swan Soap to needy children in Europe.
Doris Day sings “Havin’ a Wonderful Wish” from Sorrowful Jones.
Doris Day and Hope reminisce about a party at Bob's house, given for the crew of the flight that shuttled Hope on his whirlwind tour. They talk about the food and Hope’s serving small portions. Miss Ryan interrupts their chat. She was also at the party, briefly. She had to leave early due to her bad back. She talks about the fundraising efforts of her club and why she has remained single for so long.
Averback and Hope make another pitch for the “Swan CARE Campaign”.
Bill Farrell sings “Careless Hands”.
Hope introduces “his favorite redhead” - Lucille Ball - and they discuss their new movie, Sorrowful Jones. He admires her hair.
BOB: “If you get together with ‘The Boy with Green Hair’ you’d make a terrific traffic signal!”
He thanks her for not making a crack about his nose. She says she appreciated it.
LUCY: “It was such an easy place to hang my coat every morning.”
Lucy says she loved working at Paramount and hopes that they make another picture together soon. He asks her about “My Favorite Husband” on ‘that other network’. She says that her show has great ratings. She tells him the premise of the show.
He compares her domestic situation on radio with the couples he he has seen in films, like Kentucky (1938), a Romeo and Juliet story set amidst horse racing in Kentucky. They launch into a sketch playing Ma and Pa.
PA: “A-Okay, Ma. Get the children in the house and we’ll eat.” MA: “Alright, I’ll get Elam, Rufus, Walter, Albert, Effie Mae, Janie, Betty Lou, Charles, Si, Jack, Fred, George, Ellie, Billy, Clarence, Hiram, Helen, and Jean.” PA: “And I’ll get John, Harvey, Cletus, Zeke, Daniel Boone, Judy, Joan, Nancy, Carolyn, Birdie, Eleanor, Little Daisy, Sam, Kate, Tom, Abner, and Teddy.” MA: “Well, that takes care of the twins. Who’ll get the single ones?”
Hope says another interesting husband and wife is a Brooklyn cab driver and his wife. The band plays “The Sidewalks of New York”. Hope and Ball do Brooklyn accents for their characters.
In closing, as usual, Hope sings “Thank for the Memory” with special lyrics about the episode, including the Swan Soap CARE Campaign.

And here you can see the moment I silently lost my mind last night. That is a pack of Kraft deluxe American cheese, room temperature, hidden behind some crackers.
Now look y'all, I get it when you got the wrong kind, or your kid grabbed it while you were distracted, or went over budget, whatever, but Y'ALL KNOW DARN TOOTIN WELL THAT DOESN'T GO THERE AND CHEESE NEEDS TO BE KEPT COLD. Most people have had cheese in their fridge at some point. Everyone who has ever been to a grocery store and bought cheese know it was in a cooler when they picked it up and it feels cool to the touch.
And what really gets my goat is that the cheese was literally 10-12 steps to the left. From where this cheese was hidden, if you face the shelf and turn your head to the left, the cheese is right there directly in your line of vision. And, I counted, about 10-12 steps away.
Look I know $5-$6 (plus tax) isn't a ton of money to a huge corporation like Walmart. But you and this cheese aren't the only instance of crap like this happening. It happens every single dang day. We can't sell refrigerated or frozen stuff after it's been left out that long. It's given to claims so they can log the loss and it's tossed. That profit loss gets made up somewhere else eventually. But it's not coming out of the Walton's pockets or the CEO's pocket. It's going to get made up with cutting hours or bonuses or something that only hurts employees like me and my managers.
Y'all that do this are on my last nerve. You're wasting food and being lazy. Knock it the heck off. I get it's embarrassing to tell the cashier you went over budget. But trust me, I wouldn't judge you or want you to feel bad. It's fine, seriously, just give me whatever you're putting back and I'll try to get the cold stuff put up while it's still good. If anyone gives you crap, let a manager know or mention it in the survey on the back of your receipt.
Also, any rumors you hear that Walmart has employees walking around looking for stuff to put back is a lie. We're lucky to get enough people scheduled to do their regular jobs. Even if someone is casually walking by, they probably won't see it if you hide it. We also don't have someone live viewing the cameras all day who will see you do this and go put it back after you walk away.
All of this also applies for people who put stuff they don't want in the candy in the checkout lane or on top of the drink cooler. Knock that off too. You know the cashier will find it eventually so just give it to them. You don't know how irritating it is to run a whole cart full of go-backs just to find something else hidden in the aisle when you bring your empty cart to the front.
I know it's my job to put stuff up and tidy up my lane, but it's not my only duty. And no, you're not getting paid to "work". It's picking up after yourself to be a decent person.
Ok, I've said my piece. I'll hear no arguments to justify being lazy for the heck of it. If you're disabled, ok, but employees will still help you if you ask nicely.

i am watching regular tv for the first time in a while and i just saw a commercial for kraft singles (do they even need a commercial?) where they showed literally the most unappetizing food in the world where they just... melted one kraft single over regular food and it looked disgusting but they were acting like it was delicious. like yeah you can melt one kraft single over brocolli but does that mean you should? no. i finally understand the way europeans look at american food cuz if i had no context that the us does have lots of other cheese options, and i saw this commercial where they melted a slice, didn't even mix it, and acted like it was normal, i would also think our food was disgusting
#the slogan was 'just square it!' and i almost threw up#literally being able to see the exact edges of the cheese is what MAKES THIS GROSS#and i don't even mind a kraft single on a sandwich or a grilled cheese that's fine#but don't just place one on top of a perfectly fine regular dish and then act like thats okay#that's not okay#why did this commercial make me so mad its so dumb#mypersonalthings

Lowry Hill Meats, 21 October 2018
It’s October in Minneapolis, which means a number of things depending on who you talk to. Some people refer to it as pumpkin spice season, people who like to shit on other people’s fun talk shit about pumpkin spice season, people over nine years old marvel at the way leaves change color like that’s some shit they’ve never seen before on an annual basis, errbody in the club gettin on Tinder for cuffing season, and scarf enthusiasts are losing their goddamned nut over their time to shine, but mostly, it just means shitty, pissy weather, night and day. When it’s not windy, it’s raining; when it’s not raining, it’s just gloomy; when it’s not gloomy, it’s windy; and when it’s not some combination of these bullshit elements driving me to - Wait, did they say the words “trap house jazz” on NPR? Whatever, when it’s not windy, raining, gloomy, shitty, pissy, or some combination of those, it’s fucking freezing and the landlord doesn’t know to turn the fucking heat on. “But, Charlie,” you say, “the leaves change color.” Say that shit to me one more time and I’ll strangle your ass. I swear to fucking god. Anyway, that’s just why there hasn’t been a Sandwich Bully for three weeks; it’s just been too shitty to go outside. You know what I did yesterday? It was 42°F, you think I conducted any urban exploring in 42°F? (That’s 5½°C... That’s right, I’m flexing my alt-code muscles.) I baked a frozen pizza (chicken pesto, if you’re curious, and it was meh) and watched a couple Shane Black movies. You know what I did last weekend? No, I’m seriously asking. I don’t remember what the fuck I did. It probably involved staying inside because it was shitty, gloomy, damp, pissy, and nut-shrinking cold outside and you’re right I’m angry, we got shorted on our summer this year, we had a blizzard in May. That shit aint right. Why did the settlers think establishing a major metropolitan hub up in this motherfucker was a good idea? It’s cold all the time, mosquitoes are the size of cats, gnats everywhere, fucking winter lasts eight months, everybody’s obese because of that, suicide rates seven thousand percent higher than the global average, really!! But today it’s 55°F, sunny, not a cloud in the sky. I had to take to my bike and get out and just be out. And then I realized that I hadn’t done a Sandwich Bully in a while, so while Ophira Eisenberg wrapped up Ask Me Another, I started Googling delis and then just sandwiches and I narrowed it down to a few choices: Broder’s Deli (next to last one in that link and frequently mentioned in our halllowed halls) Lowry Hill Meats Northbound Smokehouse (top one in that link)
I also considered just walking to Icehouse, where I never go, because they have a Reuben that - and check the fuck out of this shit out - consists of pastrami, “pickled cabbage”, fontina, and remoulade on rye. There are so many places to start there that I kind of want to hold off on my bloviating over the theory and principles of the Reuben until I actually eat one of these damned things and seeing, “Could it work?” (Preview of my own thoughts on the subject: If they can’t commit to just sauerkraut and have to go with “pickled cabbage”... Uh... Nuh.) † Now, going to Broder’s would be fine and dandy but it wouldn’t be anything to write about because I can’t keep praising them. And the more I thought about Northbound, the more I didn’t want to go in, alone, get spotted by neighborhood regulars taking a picture of my food and have to explain to them what a blog is nor did I want to wait, so I went to Lowry Hill after a ride around Cedar Lake, went in, asked young Jason Priestly looking homie if he recommended the mysteriously titled “French Exit” which is really just your choice of meat and some fancy cheese with mustard and aioli on a baguette or the Turkey Melt which, you guessed it, is a grilled cheese with turkey on it, here billed identically on the website and in the physical space (psst! Will every other deli in Minneapolis catch up to that? Please and Thank You.) as turkey (obvs), house made American cheese (you read that right, hell, I read that right), aioli, and mustard on brioche. Jason Priestly tells me the turkey melt, if he has to pick between the two, nothing wrong with the French Exit, it’s just that he likes hot sandwiches and the French Exit is cold. I say let’s do that and grab a Mexican Coke. Wow, that’s kind of a catchy line. Take it a different way and I could employ that in multiple situations. “Let’s do that and grab a Mexican Coke.” Yeah. I like the way that sounds. Going to put that on a t-shirt, man.
LET’S DO THAT AND GRAB A MEXICAN COKE
Look at that. That’s US$24.95 on Etsy, baby. That’s a moneymaker. ANYhoo, after I remind you I exist and drag you along on this journey, I’m sure you’re wondering how this sandwich tasted, especially since last time I went there, I disparaged them a little as all I could taste on their roast beef was vinegar. Well, I want to make a musical reference. Will this work?
youtube
Get it? Because they’re redeemed, see, and - Wh- No? No good? Not working for you? Fuck you, then. So the turkey itself was I want to say oven roasted as opposed to smoked as it was perfectly juicy and they seasoned it just right, to get rid of that cardboard turkey taste. The cheese was mildly tangy and didn’t have the same sodiumtastic flavor of, say, Kraft Singles. It paired nicely with the turkey. But the real socially progressive third party candidate embattled by their controversial past in this key battleground state during a midterm election whose discourse has largely been dominated by muck raking and accusations (and acknowledgments) of scandal is, surprisingly, the sweet coarse ground mustard paired with the aioli. This is a study in the condiments steering the flavor of the sandwich away from just a hot turkey & american, though these were quite good turkey and american, to something semisweet and complex. However, I will note that I didn’t find the sandwich complete until I added the seeded jalapeño slices on the sandwich, giving it a mild kick. Now, was this anything to lose my mind over? Nah but I was pleasantly surprised. Would I pay nine dollars for this again? Mm, like if I was on a date but I remember where I’m from: I’m from being broke. So twelve dollars for a sandwich and a pop? That’s not something I want to make a habit out of. But considering they probably slaughtered this turkey and they actually made their American cheese and their aioli and their mustard (and Cecil’s charges you the same price for shipped in and say they just don’t have the space to do that themselves), that’s the price you pay for - I hate to use this word - artisanal. That’s what’s going on there: Artisanal meat craft. Their meat case? Has actual parts of animals in it. Not smoked and wrapped in plastic, no. Just bare-assed parts of animals. Pink and red flesh on white bones. It’s the real deal. It’s just too bad they don’t have kielbasa. Go give them your money. † Update, 27 October 2018: Icehouse doesn’t have a Reuben anymore for reasons unknown. They tried to sell me a pastrami and egg sandwich instead and I was all, “Nah.”

Those Ridiculous National Food Days Are Good for Small Business
As every American knows by now, the country celebrates National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 18.
Tamara Keefe, founder of St. Louis mini chain Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Ice Cream, is ready. “This is our busiest day of the year in terms of customers and sales,” she says. Keefe estimates that “on a very busy hot summer Saturday, we take out 1,000 or 1,100 people.” On National Ice Cream Day, that number rises to 1,500 to 2,000. “The turnover has almost doubled.”
It’s going to be tough for Keefe to beat last year’s performance. During the pandemic, she saw a notable surge in her only open store on National Ice Cream Day. “We had 2,500 people at this location. We made about $ 15,000 in sales that day. ”
We’re celebrating Ice Cream for Breakfast Day earlier this year at Clementine’s.

Inaugurated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and celebrated on the third Sunday of July, National Ice Cream Day is one of the biggest food and beverage holidays that bombards people’s social media feeds and inboxes. The events are reminiscent of everything from baked ham with pineapple (April 16) to moldy cheese (October 9) to “Pizza with the works except anchovies” (November 12).
They are a powerful marketing tool – never as good as during the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘A big thing’
More of
Ben Van Leeuwen, founder of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, says Ice Cream Day is “a big deal for us. We always see sales increases of 15 to 20%. ”He expects his company to see an increase of up to 20% this year, even if the viral Mac & Cheese ice cream cooperation with the Kraft Foods Group Inc. is not included. This Mac & Cheese Day (July 14th) creation sold out online in an hour.
At Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, based in Columbus, Ohio and with 59 stores across the country, founder Jeni Britton Bauer traditionally turned down National Ice Cream Day. “I’ve always thought it was low-hanging fruit – that it doesn’t pay that much, but it gives you something to talk about.” Still, their stores saw sales increase by around 15% in 2020 compared to an average summer Sunday .
Van Leeuwen sees a spike of at least 15% on National Ice Cream Day on a regular basis.
Source: Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
A notable alliance of Food Days is NationalToday, com, which lists all types of holidays but pays special attention to food and drink. It categorizes more than 300 major culinary holidays and over 700 smaller ones. The platform was founded in 2017 by Ben Kaplan and is owned by TOP Worldwide, an Austin, Texas-based marketing company with offices in more than 20 countries.
One way to start a food vacation is the way ice cream did – through the government statement. You can also gain traction when you’re supported by a brand looking to promote a single product or passionate people who want their favorite snack to be in the spotlight for the time being. “Some have an unknown origin, but are now anchored in the mindset of consumers and are therefore celebrated,” says Kaplan.
A fee must cover the creation of a holiday if it has been approved. “It’s often thousands of dollars,” he adds. “Companies and brands can also choose whether they want our help with influencers, social media, digital content or PR campaigns for everything related to holidays.”
International Dark ‘n Stormy Day is one of the newer holidays on the National Today calendar. It all started in 2020 when June 9 was declared the official Rum-Ginger-Beer Highball Day. During the six-month preliminary negotiations with National Today, Gosling’s trademarked rum had to submit background material to prove its legitimacy. “We provided a copy of the Dark ‘n Stormy trademark certificate. It helped that June 9, 2020 was the brand’s 40th anniversary, ”said Malcolm Gosling Jr., whose family started the company.
In 2020, Goslings Rum was inaugurated on June 9th as Dark ‘n Stormy Day.
Source: goslings
In June 2020, Goslings ‘sales on the Drizly e-commerce platform increased 600% during the June week of Dark’ n Stormy Day promotions compared to the same week in 2019. (This shift is also due to the movement of the Online orders during the pandemic.)
Lifestyle vacation fatigue
However, such large sales spikes on National Food and Beverage Days can be temporary. When many restaurants were closed and people locked in their homes last year, a local ice cream cone gained even more prominence, especially for social media and hashtag purposes. Now that the venues are reopening, French Fry Day (July 13th) seems to be less of a priority.
This year, Goslings has seen a decline in interest around the national holiday. Although rum saw double-digit growth in the US this June, “we saw a more enthusiastic response from companies getting on the Dark ‘n Stormy Day promotional train in Europe,” says Brand Director Laura Baughman. “This could indicate an affinity for these lifestyle vacations among Europeans more than among Americans, who may experience a certain amount of fatigue on lifestyle vacations.” National Today’s Kaplan agrees, saying there is “a lot of interest in food tours in the UK, Italy, Australia and India.” He adds, “Consumer engagement on most holidays has doubled during the pandemic.”
In 2020, Casa Dragones benefited from the celebration of National Tequila Day on July 24th. According to founder Bertha Gonzalez, the tequila company’s sales increased by about 30% compared to the previous week. “National Tequila Day was particularly impressive for us last year,” she says. Casa Dragones hosted live Instagram classes with celebrities like Lily Aldridge, and the events garnered 447,000 impressions.
“We saw our online sales with Reservebar.com grow over 200% year over year,” said Gonzalez. She believes this year’s National Tequila Day will bring another spike in sales, but isn’t sure if it will keep up with last year’s. “I’m open to surprises,” says Gonzalez.
In the two weeks leading up to this year’s Gin & Tonic Day on April 9th, Fever-Tree, a supplier of mixers, saw sales jump 11% at Tonic Water. That’s a dramatic decrease from 2020, when the company saw a 300% increase in the seven days leading up to G&T day, according to Charles Gibb, chief executive officer of Fever-Tree North America.
Even products that may seem impenetrable to National Food Days often see a surge in sales. On last year’s National Junk Food Day (July 21), the soda category saw demand increase 12% compared to average daily sales for the remainder of the year, according to Pattern, a global e-commerce company. Its data suggests the jump could take place again this year; So far, the demand for soda is up 13% year over year.
Jeni’s has presented its Everything Bagel Ice Cream for this year’s Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.

Ice cream for breakfast day
Sometimes the less obvious days are the most powerful. Bauer from Jeni’s Ice Cream favors Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, which is celebrated on the first Saturday in February over the national holiday of July 18th. The rule-breaking vacation was started by a woman in Rochester, NY, in the 1960s to keep her children entertained during a snow storm. “We own Ice Cream for Breakfast Day,” says Bauer. On this day, Jeni’s shops open at 8 a.m. By noon, 100% of the profits will be donated to charities such as the social change site DoSomething.org. Japan’s central bank will ease its support for the stock market. Here’s what you need to know: The headquarters of the Bank of Japan in Tokyo.Credit…Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters The Bank of Japan said on Friday that it would scrap its annual minimum target for equity fund purchases, a decision that comes as Japan’s stock markets hit levels unseen since the collapse of the country’s economic bubble in the early 1990s. The decision was announced as part of a three-month policy review meant to give the central bank more flexibility to address the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Under its previous policy, the bank aimed to invest around $55 billion annually in exchange-traded funds — baskets of equities that can be bought and sold on the stock market. That was part of a policy of monetary easing intended to stimulate inflation to combat sagging prices, which sap corporate profits. Since 2010, when the purchases began, the bank has become Japan’s single largest stockholder. Share prices are now at their highest point in over three decades. The decision on Friday will give the bank the flexibility to make future purchases at more favorable prices. It will also help to address concerns that the program has distorted Japanese stock markets. The bank will continue to invest in equities that track Japan’s Topix stock index “as necessary,” it said. It will maintain the upper limit of $110 billion in purchases per year that was set earlier in the pandemic, as part of emergency measures to stimulate the economy. The bank also said that it would maintain its current interest rate targets while allowing long-term rates slightly more room to breathe, increasing the band to 0.25 percent from 0.2 percent. Charles Rettig, the Internal Revenue Service commissioner, last year. He said the I.R.S. was planning to automatically issue refunds to taxpayers that were eligible for new tax breaks.Credit…Anna Moneymaker for The New York Times Taxpayers who already filed their 2020 returns should not amend them to take advantage of tax breaks that were created by the new $1.9 trillion pandemic relief legislation, the Internal Revenue Service commissioner, Charles Rettig, told lawmakers on Thursday, saying that the I.R.S. would automatically send refunds to those who qualify. Mr. Rettig, speaking at a congressional hearing, was referring to a provision in the law that provides a tax exemption on the first $10,200 of jobless benefits collected in 2020 by unemployed workers whose households earned less than $150,000. “We believe that we will be able to automatically issue refunds associated with the $10,200,” Mr. Rettig said. According to The Century Foundation, about 40 million Americans received unemployment insurance last year. The tax changes included in the most recent stimulus bill passed earlier this month, along with tax changes in the December aid package and the rush to disburse economic impact payments, have put severe pressure on the I.R.S. The agency said on Wednesday that Tax Day would be pushed back by a month, from April 15 to May 17, to give itself and taxpayers more time to handle returns and refunds. The Treasury Department and the I.R.S. are also racing to develop new regulations and update systems to reflect other aspects of the March relief law. Treasury officials said at a briefing on Thursday that they are working with the I.R.S. to develop a new online portal to disburse advance payments for the expanded Child Tax Credit, which will provide up to $3,600 per child under age 6 and $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17, regardless of whether a family earns enough to pay income taxes. The portal will allow taxpayers to upload relevant data for midyear payment adjustments, such as the birth of a child, the officials said. Treasury officials also said the department is working on additional guidance on how states can use money included in the relief law. That will include clarity about how states must repay relief funds if they decide to cut taxes after receiving aid. Government workers have been particularly hit hard by the pandemic. Nearly 1.4 million of the 9.5 million jobs that have disappeared over the past year came from state and local work forces. State and local government positions account for about 13 percent of the nation’s jobs, and the sector has historically been more welcoming for women and African-Americans, offering an entryway into the middle class. But a report from GovernmentJobs.com, a recruiting site for public sector jobs, suggests that even in this corner of the economy, applicants who are not white males can be at a disadvantage. The study, which analyzed more than 16 million applicants by race, ethnicity and gender in 2018 and 2019, found that among candidates deemed qualified for a job in city, county or state government, Black women are 58 percent less likely to be hired than white men. Over all, qualified women were 27 percent less likely to be hired than qualified men. The disparity was surprising. In a survey of 2,700 applicants, nearly a third said they thought they were more likely to be discriminated against in the private sector than in the public. Black Americans, who make up 13 percent of the population, rely disproportionately on state and local government jobs, making up 28 percent of the applicants for positions. There were steps that could mitigate bias. The study found that many more Black women were called in for interviews when all personally identifying information was withheld during the application screening process — so recruiters did not know a candidate’s name, race and gender. Using a standardized rubric with specific guidelines for each score also sizably increased the number of Black women called in. Penisha Richardson, who is 35 and lives in Newport News, Va., is a specialist in technical support at a company making printers and copiers. She remembers that when she was looking for jobs — in the public and private sectors — she got many more responses when she listed her name as Penny instead of Penisha. “I had one person tell me I should go by Penny because it’s easier to pronounce,” Ms. Richardson said. Alexi McCammond, who made her name as a politics reporter at the Washington news site Axios, had planned to start as the editor in chief of Teen Vogue next Wednesday. Now, after Teen Vogue staff members publicly condemned racist and homophobic tweets Ms. McCammond had posted a decade ago, she has resigned from the job. Condé Nast, Teen Vogue’s publisher, announced the abrupt turn on Thursday in an internal email that was sent amid pressure from the publication’s staff, readers and at least two advertisers, just two weeks after the company had appointed her to the position. China’s internet regulator rebuked LinkedIn executives this month for failing to control political content, according to three people briefed on the matter. Though it isn’t clear precisely what material got the company into trouble, the regulator said it had found objectionable posts circulating in the period around an annual meeting of China’s lawmakers, said these people, who asked for anonymity because the issue isn’t public. As a punishment, the people said, officials are requiring LinkedIn to perform a self-evaluation and offer a report to the country’s internet regulator. The service was also forced to suspend new sign-ups of users inside China for 30 days, one of the people added, though that period could change depending on the administration’s judgment. LinkedIn has been the lone major American social network allowed to operate in China. Amazon will show Thursday night games on its Amazon Prime Video service.Credit…Jennifer Stewart/Associated Press The N.F.L. signed new media rights agreements with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and Amazon collectively worth about $110 billion over 11 years, nearly doubling the value of its previous contracts, Ken Belson and Kevin Draper report for The New York Times. CBS, Fox and NBC will pay more than $2 billion each to hold onto their slots, with NBC paying slightly less than CBS and Fox, according to four people familiar with the agreements who requested anonymity because they were not authorized by the N.F.L. to speak publicly about the deals. ESPN will pay about $2.7 billion a year to continue airing Monday Night Football, but also to be added into the rotation to broadcast the Super Bowl beginning in 2026. The agreement with ESPN starts one year earlier, in 2022, because its current contract expires one year earlier than the others. Each of the broadcasters’ deals include agreements for their respective streaming platforms, while Amazon will show Thursday night games on its Amazon Prime Video service. “Over the last five years, we started the migration to streaming. Our fans want this option, and the league understands that streaming is the future,” said Robert K. Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and chairman of the N.F.L.’s media committee. The N.F.L. has not yet announced who will broadcast Sunday Ticket, a subscription service that lets fans watch out-of-market weekend games that are not broadcast nationally. DirecTV has the rights to that service through 2022. The contracts also set the stage for the league’s owners to make good on plans to expand the regular season to include a 17th game. It will be the first major expansion to the N.F.L. season in more than four decades, when teams began playing 16 games, up from 14, in 1978. 10 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 7 with Jacob Aere
Those who predicted the downfall of the NFL may be reconsidering, at least from a ratings standpoint. The NFL stopped a two-year ratings slide and increased its audience across all of its broadcast windows during the regular season, which ended last Sunday. Games averaged about 15.8 million viewers, an improvement of 800,000 viewers, or 5%, on the 2017 season. According to JohnWallStreet, NBC’s 13th season of “Sunday Night Football” was up 7%, keeping it on pace to be the Number One show in primetime for a record eighth straight year. Comparatively, the run has already eclipsed six years of “American Idol,” and five of “The Cosby Show” and “All in the Family.” As the playoffs move on to divisional matchups, the NFL has also announced that it has selected Caesars Entertainment as its first casino sponsor. The multi-year sponsorship is focused on Caesars providing unique experiences for NFL fans by using its casino properties, celebrity chefs, premier musical acts, and a wide range of entertainment elements. The agreement is extraordinary when you consider that less than two years ago, the NFL considered any connections to gambling whatsoever to be its ultimate taboo.
A deadline extension wasn’t enough to keep 33 Tribune Broadcasting stations alive on Charter Spectrum cable systems, impacting NFL fans. A financial dispute between Tribune Media and Charter Communications resulted in a carriage agreement not being reached by last Wednesday, resulting in a blackout that affected six million viewers across the U.S. and kept the Dallas Cowboys' NFC Wild Card win over the Seattle Seahawks off Spectrum cable channels in multiple markets. All told, the dispute has impacted 33 Tribune stations, 12 of which carry Fox, and seven of which are CBS affiliates. The showdown comes at a particularly difficult time for the cable TV industry, which was projected to lose 1.1 million customers in 2018, including 200,000 Charter subscribers, according to estimates from MoffettNathanson Research. If the dispute isn’t resolved by this weekend, millions of NFL fans could be shut out of Saturday’s Cowboys-Rams matchup on Fox, and both Sunday divisional round games, respectively on CBS (Chargers-Patriots) and Fox (Eagles-Saints).
Early numbers don’t look great for college football’s championship showdown Monday night between Alabama and Clemson in Santa Clara. Television ratings were down sharply for both teams’ semifinals victories last weekend, as both games saw lopsided scores early on and did not air on New Year’s Day. ESPN drew a total audience of 16.8 million viewers for Clemson's 30-3 win over Notre Dame in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, down from 26.8 million viewers for the early semifinal game last year, when Georgia beat Oklahoma 54-48 in an overtime Rose Bowl game. In the primetime window, Alabama's 45-34 win over Oklahoma in the Capital One Orange Bowl -- in which Alabama raced out to a 28-0 lead -- drew a total audience of 19.1 million viewers, down from 21.1 million last year when Alabama beat Clemson in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. What’s more, by midweek, seats at Levi’s Stadium for the CFP championship game had dropped below $120 on the secondary market. The low number of tickets sold is a likely confluence of the long distance for Tide and Tigers fans to travel and college football fan apathy about watching Alabama play Clemson for the fourth consecutive season – and the third time they will play for the title.
Regardless of the outcome on the field on Monday night, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock on Saturday reiterated that he "doesn't envision" expansion of the CFP happening during its current contract, which runs through 2026. There’s been much recent speculation about the playoff field expanding to 6 or 8 teams as early as next season, and multiple Power Five and other conference commissioners have expressed an interest in playoff expansion and the additional revenue it would bring. However, further expansion would come with serious concerns, including player safety and injury prevention, academic roadblocks, diluting college football’s regular season, and destroying the pageantry and tradition of long-established bowl games, with the Rose Bowl front and center in that debate. Said Hancock, "The four-team playoff format is extremely popular." But he added conference commissioners feel it "wouldn't be a bad idea to talk about seeing if we can make this great thing even greater." A more comprehensive review of the playoff will likely come this April, at the CFP's annual meetings in Dallas.
Players competing in singles matches at the Australian Open, beginning next week, will receive 10-minute breaks if the Grand Slam's notorious heat reaches dangerous levels. According to the London Independent, tournament executives "unveiled an extended Extreme Heat Policy designed to protect the well-being of the world's best tennis players" when they meet over the next few weeks. Temperatures soared around 100 degrees Farenheit at last year’s tournament in Melbourne, "prompting concerns that competitors were at risk of heat stroke." Tournament Director Craig Tiley said that the players' well-being was their "utmost priority" and an overhauled "heat stress scale" had been developed by Tennis Australia medical personnel and experts at the University of Sydney. The BBC reported under the new policy, if a reading of 4.0 is recorded on the Australian Open Heat Stress Scale during a men's singles match, "a 10-minute break will be allowed after the third set." If the reading occurs during a women's or junior singles match, the break “will take place between the second and third sets, as will the 15-minute break in wheelchair singles." If a reading of 5.0 is recorded, the tournament referee can suspend play. Players’ well-being and fitness is of particular concern at the Australian Open, as the year’s first Slam can set the tone for the entire season.
Roger Federer has led his Swiss compatriots to another Hopman Cup win, and Australian Open organizers are looking forward to once again basking in the reflected glow of the Federer brand. Federer's global appeal “makes him a box office dream” for tournament organizers, but it can mean that “he is as busy off the court as he is on it in the initial stages of an event,” according to The Australian. Hopman Cup organizers and the West Australian government "forked out a significant amount to lure the 20-time grand slam winner" to Perth for the third straight year. The exact amount is understood to reach “seven figures.” The “beauty” of the six-time Australian Open champion, according to marketers, is that Federer "goes above and beyond what is usually required of the sport’s stars." As part of his recent obligations, Federer traveled about two hours north of Perth to The Pinnacles, a limestone formation in the Nambung National Park, "for a promotional photo shoot." A week after Fed posed for the photo, the Australian government claimed it had been viewed by close to six hundred million people.
The NHL wraps another big Winter Classic and prepares for its All-Star Game in San Jose later this month. NBC Sports’ presentation of the 2019 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic across all platforms averaged a Total Audience Delivery of nearly three million viewers, making it the most-watched Winter Classic in four years and up 20% compared to last year’s game, according to Nielsen and Adobe Analytics. Additionally, nominations are officially open for the fifth year of Kraft Hockeyville USA, as hockey communities look for an opportunity to host an NHL Pre-Season Game, receive up to $150,000 in rink upgrades from Kraft Heinz, and $10,000 worth of hockey equipment through the NHLPA Goals & Dreams program. And the league has unveiled its touchstone events for the 2019-2020 season, including the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic October 26 in Saskatchewan; 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, and the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis. Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks ready their SAP Center for the second time, after a successful All-Star event in 1997.
NTT Corp. could soon take over as IndyCar title sponsor. According to SportsBusiness Journal, IndyCar has been in advanced talks with NTT Corp., the Japanese parent company of NTT Data, about taking over as title sponsor. IndyCar has been searching for a replacement for previous title sponsor Verizon for more than a year, and the hunt is coming down to the wire as the 2019 IndyCar season begins in St. Petersburg on March 10 and features 17 events in the circuit’s first full season with NBC Sports Group. IndyCar CEO Mark Miles has said to expect an announcement this month. NTT Data, a longtime sponsor of Chip Ganassi Racing’s IndyCar program, is one of the largest IT services companies in the world with more than $16 billion in annual revenue. Having a global tech conglomerate as a title sponsor would only benefit IndyCar drivers like Zach Veach, who is sponsored by Group1001 and recently launched a STEM education program with online education leader EVERFI.
IMG College and Learfield finalize merger. The merger of Learfield and IMG College is now complete, according to multiple sources. The two sports marketing giants begin the New Year as one fully merged company, signaling a new era in collegiate marketing and media. Learfield President and CEO Greg Brown will oversee Learfield-IMG College going forward. The company will be based in Plano, Texas, where Learfield is headquartered. The merger is a 50-50 deal between Learfield, which is owned by Atairos Group, and IMG College. Combined, Learfield-IMG College owns multimedia rights to 55 of 65 schools in the Power Five conferences and more than 200 schools in all, giving one company an unprecedented bundle of rights to sell in the college space. The closely watched blockbuster deal originally was signed in October 2017, but a longer-than-expected merger review by the Department of Justice left both businesses operating separately until now. Brown will run the merged business and sit on a board that will have representation from Atairos and Endeavor. The merged company is believed to be valued at more than $2 billion, and will wield an outsized influence in collegiate sports media rights deals for many years to come.
Stephen Curry will auction off his game-worn “Moon Landing” shoes for STEM education. Less than a month ago, Stephen Curry playfully claimed during a podcast that a person hadn't landed on the moon – this quickly went viral. Promptly, NASA invited him for an informational tour of the Johnson Space Center during his next visit to Houston. While the Golden State Warriors do not visit Texas until March, Curry donned a special NASA-themed pair of kicks against the visiting Houston Rockets last week. After a tough 135-134 overtime loss, Curry signed the shoes to be auctioned off on eBay through a collaboration between DonorsChoose.org and the Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation. Proceeds will benefit local STEM education programs in the Bay Area to help young students learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The upcoming auction marks the third straight season that Curry has put his game-worn sneakers to a good cause after his shoes helped raise $45,201 for local victims of the Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire in 2016 and $31,740 for the Curry Family Foundation in 2017. Like other athletes, including Indy Car driver Zach Veach, Curry is helping to promote STEM learning through charity.

Nespresso Espresso Machines Review
For over 300 years, the immense popularity of coffee and coffee drinks is an excellent incentive for inventors and entrepreneurs. As a result, today the market offers a huge number of coffee machines of various types, the price and functionality of which varies over a wide range. A few decades ago, the sharp increase in the popularity of coffee milk drinks has stimulated rapid improvement of automatic espresso machines. Of course, the improvement of components and brewing technology, including pre-wetting, P.E.P., and other similar innovations have become one of the main directions. In addition, the active use of digital technology has radically expanded the custom settings of modern espresso machines. Delonghi ECAM 650, Saeco Xelsis, Melitta Caffeo Barista, Siemens EQ9, or Jura Z6 Impressa illustrates this trend perfectly. In addition, many companies continued to improve the capsule espresso machines, which provides very quick and easy preparation of popular coffee drinks. As a result, today the market offers a huge assortment of capsule single-serve espresso makers. As known, Eric Favre received the patent for the invention of capsule coffee machine in 1978. But the widespread use of this method of packaging and brewing coffee began only in the late 80s. But in the early years it had problems. Firstly, coffee capsules were quite expensive and in a small assortment. Secondly, the quality of coffee was inferior to the traditional method. As a result, many coffee aficionados even today prefer traditional brewing, arguing their choice with its best taste and aroma. But over several decades, companies have radically changed the situation, significantly reducing the price of capsules, expanding their range and quality of the finished drinks. Of course, Nestle is a leader in this segment.
Nespresso Machines
As known, Nestle Nespresso S.A. (Nespresso trademark) is one of the independent divisions of the Nestle Group, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the second half of the 80s, the company introduced its first Nespresso models. In 2006, Nestle expanded its capsule coffee machine range with Dolce Gusto. Today, Dolce Gusto leads the capsule market in Europe. Of course, the company could not ignore the huge North American market, where the American company Keurig Dr Pepper, located on the east coast in Burlington, Massachusetts, has dominated since 1990. For example, today its sales volume has already exceeded 3,000,000. In addition, this company patented a K-cup system with a large tab of coarse ground coffee, the amount of which varies from 12 to 16 grams. As known, american coffee culture has a peculiarity. Usually, Europeans drink coffee often, but in very small doses. Accordingly, European coffee makers cook well saturated coffee with a volume of 30-60 ml in 20-30 seconds. In this case, 5 - 5.5 g of coffee in the standard Nespresso capsule corresponds well to this volume. But Americans usually prefer to drink coffee in large portions in the range of 200-300 ml. The preparation of such a portion with a standard European coffee machine takes several minutes, and its consistency is too liquid and unsaturated. As a result, already in 2014, the European company offered the Nespresso VertuoLine series for large-volume capsules.
Some features
A preliminary simplified classification will help eliminate possible confusion in terms. First of all, Nespresso in the model name means that the coffee machine can use Nespresso capsules. As known, Nestle cooperates with DeLonghi and Krups, which produce Nespresso models. In addition, the famous KitchenAid, Breville, etc also offer coffee makers using Nespresso capsules. But of course, besides Nestle, today many companies, including Delica (Cremesso capsules), Kraft Foods (Jacobs capsules for Bosch Tassimo), Lavazza, etc offer coffee capsules. Some of them even offer their own models. In particular, this year Lavazza introduced the Blue Classy Mini coffee maker. But of course, Nestle Nespresso S.A. continues to confidently lead in this segment. Pros - Nespresso brand image; - smart-design, functionality and a wide range of coffee machines. Cons - only 5.5 grams of coffee. For comparison, Lavazza contains 8.5 g. Of course, such a small amount negatively affects the saturation, texture and strength of the coffee when preparing a portion of 50 ml or more; - the coffee machine is well adapted for “short black”, but ineffective for “long black”. In principle, “short black” corresponds to the classic espresso. For example, Australian barista do not even separate them. But during the preparation of “long black”, the device passes water under pressure through ground coffee for a very long time. As a result, it provides a much more intense extraction of caffeine, destroying the delicate aroma of the drink. On the other hand, some perceive this aspect as a plus, preferring to increase the coffee strength by suppressing its aroma; - high price of capsules. In comparison, 8.5-gram Lavazza capsules cost about half as much compared to 5.5-gram Nespresso capsules.
Nespresso Machines
As known, Nestle cooperates with DeLonghi and Krups, which produce Nespresso models. Other brands, for example, Breville or Nespresso itself, also make capsule coffee makers that are compatible with the Nespresso standard. Today these models are divided into several series, including Lattissima, Pixie, Maestria, Inissia, CitiZ, U. The cheapest compact DeLonghi Inissia is available in 10 colors! It heats the water in only 25 seconds, has a container for 11 used capsules, 19 Bar high pressure pump, removable 24 ounce water tank, and auto power off after 9 minutes of inactivity. In addition, the model provides a choice of volume for espresso - 40 ml, and for Lungo - 110 ml. For reference, today the Breville Nespresso Inissia coffee maker is a bestseller and costs only $ 120-130. The compact U series from DeLonghi or from Krups is slightly more expensive. It includes models C and D, which differ only in the shape of the dosing head on the front panel. It uses a swiveling water tank and an adjustable stand for a cocktail glass. The container for used capsules holds up to 13 pieces. The coffee machine has an anti-drip system, provides an alarm for water lack and filling the compartment for used capsules, auto-shutdown and selection of the cup volume for ristretto, espresso and lungo. U series includes the more expensive UMilk model with Aeroccino milk frother, which creates a perfectly thick milk froth. The super-compact Pixie controls the water level in the tank. Otherwise functional coincides with CitiZ. Pixie Clips series additionally uses interchangeable side panels in different colors.
CitiZ, Maestria, and Lattissima
Budget CitiZ model has a strict design, a container for 10 used capsules, provides a choice of volume, height adjustment of the pallet for the cup, and auto power off. As you might guess, the CitiZ & Milk model has a milk frother and an expanded stand for a milk jug. In addition, many TOP lists include the models in this series. Maestria differs unusual design in aluminum housing and improved steam system. A separate steam nozzle prepares milk froth for cappuccino. Each program contains 5 different settings. The model also offers 5 volume settings, generates a notification about the need for descaling, has a folding stand for cups, a container for 14 used capsules, and a large 1.4 liter water tank. Additionally, Gran Maestria model has milk frother. DeLonghi Lattissima series of the Nespresso capsule coffee machines belongs to the TOP level. It uses the built-in milk frother, has a low noise level, a container for 11 used capsules, and supports maximum functionality, including automatic cleaning, water llevel control, auto power off, stand height adjustment, volume selection (espresso, lungo, cappuccino, latte macchiato). In addition, the series offers several colors. The series includes the base DeLonghi Lattissima Plus, DeLonghi Lattissima Touch with touch controls, and DeLonghi Lattissima Pro in an aluminum case with zinc parts, touch controls and display. This series uses six preset coffee programs. In addition, it remembers the selected amount of water, milk and coffee, providing programming of the recipe. Moreover, the coffee machine pours hot water or milk. Additionally, Lattissima Pro uses container highlight with used capsules, creating an impressive futuristic effect in the dark.
Conclusion
1. The pricing policy of companies in this segment is similar to the printers selling strategy at the end of the last century. As many remember, some companies supplied their models for free to customers, ensuring their profit by selling fairly expensive ink in the future. Given the high cost of coffee capsules, this factor becomes determining when choosing the optimal model. Today, companies offer various flexible solutions, including bonus coffee capsules upon purchase, etc. 2. In recent years, competition has been growing between capsular Nespresso models and traditional automatic espresso machines. Of course, the price still divides them into different segments. For example, the top-end DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima Pro costs about $ 300 vs $ 770 of the DeLonghi ESAM3300. However, the differences between their functionality and drink quality are rapidly decreasing. Therefore, today many are already thinking about choosing between them. Of course, the modern automatic espresso machine provides a huge range of drinks and their high quality. Moreover, the cost of one such serving is significantly lower compared to a coffee capsule. But this choice is accompanied by significant one-time costs, and the need for regular maintenance. Significantly cheaper Nespresso model provides quick and easy preparation of a sufficiently high-quality drink. But it requires regular expenses for the purchase of quite expensive coffee capsules. But, of course, the optimal choice depends on personal preferences and budget. We sincerely wish you the Right Solution! This video demonstrates making a coffee drink with the Lattissima Pro machine. Read More 36 Best and Worst Foods for Barbecues
The following post 36 Best and Worst Foods for Barbecues is republished from Eat This Not That by April Benshosan
Is there anything better than an outdoor BBQ and noshing on good food with your buddies during the summer months? We think not! But you probably know by now just how toxic some foods can be. Not sure what’s good news for your gut and what should better be left on the shelf? That’s what we’re here for!
Stock up on our go-tos (and stay away from our Not That! picks) and you’ll be prepared to throw a killer BBQ at a moment’s notice. Better yet, you’ll be able to maintain your flat abs without sacrificing the classic summer foods you love. Speaking of summer foods, don’t miss our picks for the #1 summer food in every state.
1
Pork Sausage
Eat This Aidells Cajun Style Andouille Per 1 link (85 g): 160 calories, 11 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 690 mg sodium, 1 g carbs (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 15 g protein
Not That! Hillshire Farm Smoked Bratwurst Per 1 link (66 g): 220 calories 19 g fat (7 g saturated fat), 520 mg sodium, 4 g carbs (0 g fiber, 2 g sugar), 7 g protein
Over 75 percent of the calories in Hillshire Farm’s smoked bratwurst come from fat, and these brats have less than half the amount of protein compared to Aidells Cajun Style sausage. Not to mention, Hillshire Farm fills their meat with health-harming sodium nitrites—yuck. We’ll take Aidells’ lean, flavor-packed pork all summer long.
2
Beef Hot Dogs
Eat This Applegate Farms The Great Organic Uncured Beef Hot Dog Per 1 link (50 g): 110 calories, 9 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 530 mg sodium, 0 g carbs (0 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 7 g protein
Not That! Oscar Mayer Selects Angus Beef Franks Per 1 link (50 g): 170 calories, 15 g fat (6 g saturated fat), 370 mg sodium, 1 g carbs (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 6 g protein
This is an easy choice. Applegate uses lean, preservative-free meat to create a dog with more protein, fewer calories, and less fat than Oscar Mayer’s frank. Not to mention, Angus beef is no leaner—and arguably no tastier—than regular beef.
3
Veggie Burgers
Eat This Amy’s All American Veggie Burger Per patty (71 g): 130 calories, 4 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 430 mg sodium, 13 g carbs (4 g fiber, 2 g sugar), 11 g protein
Not That! Gardenburger The Original Veggie Burger Per patty (71 g): 110 calories, 3 g fat (1.5 g saturated fat), 490 mg sodium, 16 g carbs (4 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 5 g protein
Amy’s packs plenty of protein into their patties while keeping calories low, which is exactly what you want in a meat substitute. Unfortunately for Gardenburger, we can’t say the same about their burgers. Plus, Gardenburger adds gums and yeast extract to its blend.
4
Burger Meat
Eat This Grass-Fed 95% Lean Beef Patty, 4-ounce Per 113 g: 136 calories, 5 g fat (2 g saturated fat), 66 mg sodium, 0 g carbs (0 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 18.5 g protein
Not That! Conventional 85% Lean Beef Patty, 4-ounce Per 113 g: 215 calories, 15 g fat (5.5 g saturated fat), 66 mg sodium, 0 g carbs (0 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 22 g protein
Opting for 95% lean over 85% doesn’t just save you 10 grams of fat—it also slashes the saturated fat and keeps excess calories in check. Keep the lean burger meat from drying out by mixing it with minced button mushrooms, peppers, onions, or a combination of all three. For every cup of meat, use a quarter-cup of vegetables. Sure, it’s more expensive, but choosing grass-fed instead of conventional beef is the best bet for your health. Meat from these specially cared for cows provides more heart-healthy omega-3s.
5
Dry Rub
Eat This McCormick Grill Mates Applewood Rub Per 2 tsp (5 g): 15 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 340 mg sodium, 3 g carbs (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 0 g protein
Not That! Emeril’s All Natural Steak Rub Per 2 tsp (6 g): 20 calories, 0 g fat (0 mg saturated fat), 1,920 mg sodium, 0 g carbs (0 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 0 g protein
A rub is great for adding flavor to family dinner classics like chops, chicken, and steak. We’re big fans of McCormick’s smoky rub because it has a hint of sweetness and is relatively low in sodium—a rarity in this category. Just look at Emeril’s: It serves up almost a full a day’s salt in just two tablespoons! Just thinking about that makes us thirsty.
6
BBQ Sauce
Eat This Stubb’s Original Bar-B-Q Sauce Per 2 tbsp (32 g): 25 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 240 mg sodium, 6 g carbs (1 g fiber, 4 g sugar), 0 g protein
Not That! Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce Per 2 tbsp (37 g): 70 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 290 mg sodium, 18 g carbs (0 g fiber, 16 g sugar), 0 g protein
High fructose corn syrup (an additive shown to increase appetite) is the primary ingredient in Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce, which is why it packs almost three times as many calories as the bottle of Stubb’s. Stubb’s also serves up a robust flavor without packing in a ton of sugar or salt, an attribute we’re big fans of. We know which bottle we’ll be using.
7
Ketchup
Eat This True Made Foods Vegetable Ketchup Per 1 tbsp (17 g): 10 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 135 mg sodium, 3 g carbs (0 g fiber, 2- g sugar), 0 g protein
Not That! Heinz Tomato Ketchup Per 1 tbsp (17 g): 20 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 160 mg sodium, 5 g carbs (0 g fiber, 4 g sugar), 0 g protein
It may cost you a few bucks more, but go ahead and spring for True Made Foods Vegetable Ketchup. Unlike the high fructose corn syrup found in Heinz, True Made Foods naturally sweetens its condiment with fruits and vegetables, making this ketchup paleo-friendly.
8
Honey Mustard
Eat This Annie’s Organic Honey Mustard Per 1 tsp (6 g): 10 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 45 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 0 g protein
Not That! Inglehoffer Sweet Honey Mustard Per 1 tsp (5 g): 15 calories, 0 g fat (0 mg saturated fat), 35 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (0 g fiber, 2 g sugar), 0 g protein
When sugar and water show up before mustard seeds on the ingredients list, should it really be labeled mustard? We don’t think so. Opt for Annie’s Organic Honey Mustard instead. It spikes its recipe with apple cider vinegar and uses real honey.
9
Cheese
Eat This Kraft Singles 2% Milk Sharp Cheddar Per 1 slice (19 g): 45 calories, 2.5 g fat (1.5 g saturated fat), 250 mg sodium, 2 g carbs (0 g fiber, 2 g sugar), 4 g protein
Not That! Kraft Deli Deluxe Sharp Cheddar Slices Per 1 slice (19 g): 70 calories, 6 g fat (3.5 g saturated fat), 300 mg sodium, 1 g carbs (0 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 4 g protein
There may be a few lighter cheeses out there, but they don’t taste like cheese. If you’re looking for an all-purpose burger topper, use Kraft Singles 2%. Its shelf mate, Kraft Deli Deluxe, boasts three-quarters of its calories from fat, which earns you nothing but extra calories. Leave it on the shelf if you want to slim down.
10
Hamburger Buns
Eat This Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bun Per bun (76 g): 170 calories, 1.5 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 170 mg sodium, 34 g carbs (6 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 9 g protein
Not That! Sara Lee Artesano Bakery Buns Per bun (69 g): 190 calories, 2 g fat (0.5 g saturated fat), 350 mg sodium, 26 g carbs (1 g fiber, 4 g sugar), 6 g protein
Sara Lee’s pillows of empty carbs just can’t compete with Ezekiel’s fiber- and protein-packed buns. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better—or tastier–burger vessel.
11
Gluten-Free Hamburger Bun
Eat This BFree Brown Seeded Rolls Per roll (60 g): 150 calories, 5 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 220 mg sodium, 19 g carbs (6 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 6 g protein
Not That! Canyon Bakehouse Gluten-Free Hamburger Buns Per bun (85 g): 200 calories, 4 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 320 mg sodium, 39 g carbs (3 g fiber, 7 g sugar), 3 g protein
Both options are free of gluten, however, BFree Brown Seeded Rolls have zero sugar and twice the protein as Canyon’s burger vessel, making them the clear winner in our eyes. If you’re on a gluten-free diet for weight loss, you might want to read up on why a gluten-free is worse than no diet at all.
12
Hot Dog Bun
Eat This Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Hot Dog Buns Per bun (76 g): 170 calories, 1.5 g fat, (0.5 g saturated fat), 170 mg sodium, 34 g carbohydrates (6 g fiber, 0 g sugar), 9 g protein
Not That! Martin’s Famous Long Potato Rolls Per roll (53 g): 140 calories 2.5 g fat, (0.5 g saturated fat), 180 mg sodium, 24 g carbohydrates (2 g fiber, 5 g sugar), 6 g protein
Ezekiel’s hot dog holders carry six grams of filling fiber and an impressive nine grams of protein, a nutrient that preserves lean muscle mass and keeps your metabolism in high gear as you lose weight. Martin’s is laden with dough conditioners and has more sodium. We’ll pass on that combo.
13
Side Dish
Eat This Potato Salad With Oil And Vinegar Per 3/4 cup (230 g): 181 calories, 7 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 122 mg sodium, 27 g carbs (3 g fiber, 4 g sugar), 4 g protein
Not That! Potato Salad With Mayo Per 1 cup (250 g): 358 calories, 20.5 g fat (3.5 g saturated), 1,322 mg sodium, 28 g carbs (3 g fiber, n/a g sugar), 6.7 g protein
Enjoying a potato salad dressed in vinegar is a smart move. Eating the mayo-spiked kind? Not so much. Opting for the more acidic dish not only saves you calories, fat, and quite possibly a trip to the cardiologist, but also boosts your metabolism. Otherwise, a homemade cup could vary and land anywhere up to 350 calories with 20 grams of fat. Make it with olive oil and vinegar instead. According to a study published in Diabetes Care, vinegar increases the rate at which the body burns off carbs, making the more acidic dish a solid weight-loss weapon! On top of that, olive oil leads to higher levels of adiponectin in the body, a hormone that breaks down fats in the body.

Lay’s Oven Baked Potato Crisps may add some unnecessary sugar to their recipe, but other than that, they’re low in calories and sodium and have a simple list of ingredients. Another plus: They’re baked, not fried, so they have 65% less fat than a classic potato chip. Lay’s classic recipe, on the other hand, are so salty and oily, you’ll find a coating on both your fingers and tongue after just one. They have almost three times the fat as their skinnier counterpart, too.

Halo Top gets a high-five for adding protein and prebiotic fiber into its ice creams and keeping real sugar to a minimum (they use natural stevia and a hint of real sugar to add sweetness). So one might expect all that effort would compromise taste—it doesn’t. And we know because we’ve taste tested the stuff. And when the skinny version tastes that good, it just doesn’t seem worth all the extra calories and sugar in buy the high-cal Blue Bunny variety.

How Diet and Western Eating Habits Impact Health and Well-being?
New study examines what the Tsimane consume on a regular basis and compares it to that of the Moseten, a neighboring population with similar language and ancestry, but whose eating habits and lifeways are more impacted by outside forces. The researchers' findings appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
From the standpoint of heart health, the Tsimane are a model group. A population indigenous to the Bolivian Amazon, the Tsimane demonstrate next to no heart disease. They have minimal hypertension, low prevalence of obesity and and their cholesterol levels are relatively healthy. And those factors don't seem to change with age.
‘The high-calorie (2,433-2,738 kcal/day) Tsimane diet was characterized by high carbohydrate and protein intake, and low fat intake (64, 21 and 15 percent of the diet, respectively). ’
Also minimal is the incidence of Type-2 diabetes. Which leads scientists to consider the role of diet in the Tsimane's cardiovascular health -- and how it might be impacted over time as the population becomes more exposed to globalization and market forces. That's where UC Santa Barbara anthropologists Thomas Kraft and Michael Gurven come in. They are part of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project, supported by the National Institutes of Health.
"Our prior work showed that the Tsimane have the healthiest hearts ever studied, so naturally there's a lot of interest in understanding why and how," said Michael Gurven, a professor of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, co-director of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project and the paper's senior author. "The obvious first contender is, what are they eating? And are they eating what we think is best for heart health?
"We conducted a detailed analysis of the Tsimane diet and then compared it to what modern Americans typically eat, and to the diets that claim to be heart healthy," he continued. "Maybe the Tsimane just happen to follow one of those without knowing about them." These diets -- Paleo, Okinawan and DASH, among others -- are often promoted because of their proposed health benefits, and in the case of Paleo, that our bodies have evolved to benefit from particular types of food.
The connection to the Moseten is an added benefit of the study. Ethnolinguistically and genetically very similar to the Tsimane, the Moseten, an isolate in Bolivia, are much more acculturated in a number of ways than are the Tsimane. "They provide a forecast of what Tsimane health might look like 20 years from now," Gurven said. "They represent what is happening to many indigenous populations over time. To what extent may changes in their diet increase the prevalence of heart disease and diabetes?"
Using the same measurement strategy employed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the researchers interviewed 1,299 Tsimane and 229 Moseten multiple times about everything they had eaten or drunk in the previous 24 hours. Using published and their own nutritional estimates for all items, and a variety of methods to estimate portion size, they provided a detailed breakdown of daily food intake.
In addition, the Tsimane don't eat a wide variety of foods, relative to the average U.S. or Moseten diet. Almost two-thirds of their calories are derived from complex carbohydrates, particularly plantains and rice. Another 16 percent comes from over 40 species of fish, and 6 percent from wild game. Only 8 percent of the diet came from markets.
Despite the low dietary diversity, the researchers found little evidence of micronutrient deficiencies in the Tsimane's daily intake. Calcium and a few vitamins (D, E and K) were in short supply, but the intake of potassium, magnesium and selenium -- often linked to cardiovascular health -- far exceeded U.S. levels. Dietary fiber intake was almost double U.S. and Moseten levels.
Over the five years of study, the researchers saw the Tsimane's total energy and carbohydrate intake increase significantly, particularly in villages near market towns. Their consumption of food additives (lard, oil, sugar and salt) also has increased significantly. The Moseten, the researchers noted, consumed substantially more sugar and cooking oil than did the Tsimane.
The conclusion: A high-energy diet rich in complex carbohydrates is associated with low cardiovascular disease risk, at least when coupled with a physically active lifestyle (Tsimane adults average 17,000 or so steps per day, compared to Americans' 5,100). Moving away from a diet that is high in fiber and low in fat, salt and processed sugar represents a serious health risk for transitioning populations. Evidence of nutrition transition in Bolivia parallels trends in increasing body fat and body mass index among Tsimane, suggesting the low prevalence of cardiovascular disease -- as among the Tsimane -- may not persist.
According to Gurven, avoiding the pitfalls of changing diets and lifestyles will be critical for groups like the Tsimane. Many other indigenous populations in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia are in similar situations. And rates of obesity, type-2 diabetes and heart disease are high among indigenous groups whose lifeways are no longer traditional -- including many North American Indian and Australian aboriginal populations.
And for the Tsimane, change is not far on the horizon. "This is a key time," said Thomas Kraft, a postdoctoral researcher in anthropology at UC Santa Barbara and the paper's lead author. "Roads are improving in the area, as is river transport with the spread of motorized boats, so people are becoming a lot less isolated compared to the past. And it's happening at a pretty rapid pace."
Anecdotally, Gurven added, the Tsimane Health and Life History Project's biomedical team is seeing more diabetic patients among the Tsimane than they have previously. That's likely due to the increased regular intake of refined sugar and fat that occurred over the course of the study. As Kraft noted, with the Tsimane's ability to buy large kilo bags of sugar and liters of cooking oil, the researchers calculated a 300 percent rise in consumption of those products. "They're basically deep frying and adding lots of sugar to drinks when they can," he said.
And consuming a lot of calories. "But they're also physically active -- not from routine exercise, but from using their bodies to acquire food from their fields and the forest," added Gurven, "which is also an important lesson. You can't look at what you're eating irrespective of what you're doing with your body. If you're physically active, you can probably get away with more flexibility in the diet."
Calorie count aside, the high carbohydrate content of the Tsimane diet isn't "unprecedented," according to Kraft. "One of the other artery-protecting diets is the Okinawan diet from Japan. It comes out at about 85 percent carbohydrate. But a common feature they share is that pretty much across the board, they're complex carbohydrates -- it's sweet potatoes in the Okinawan diet; here it's plantains and manioc."
The Moseten diet has fewer total calories and less carbohydrates than the Tsimane diet, but the Moseten eat a broader range offoods, including more fruits, vegetables, dairy and legumes. The Moseten also buy more of their food, including soda, bread, dried meat and processed items. The Moseten diet could provide insight into the Tsimane diet of the future, the researchers suggest. "We're still analyzing their health indicators, but we expect the Moseten to show more risk factors related to diabetes and heart disease," said Gurven.
In addition to finding that the Tsimane consume more calories per day than the Moseten do, the researchers note the Tsimane are also more physically active (with much of their labor devoted to the hard work of slash and burn farming, hunting, fishing and foraging). They expend more energy activity, but may also have a higher resting energy expenditure due to higher rates of infection and persistent immune activity.
Overall, the findings suggest that no single diet protocol offers the key to health. The picture is much more complicated. "It definitely sheds light on the diversity of diets that are compatible with good cardiovascular health," said Kraft.
Added Gurven, "We're at a unique point in history where for many of us, our daily decisions are more about what not to eat. We have to work hard not to overeat. Throughout most of human history, it was the opposite. It was so hard to get those calories we needed to survive."
And in terms of the Tsimane's eagerness to incorporate sugar and other additives into their diets despite the associated health risks, "Telling folks to watch what they're eating, don't eat too much of this or that -- that mentality is hard to convey when getting food is unpredictable and a daily grind," Gurven continued. "Getting calories cheaply with less effort -- who wouldn't?"

24 Hours to Improving Cam Whores
“One is just not born, but instead results in being, a lady.”
Simone de Beauvoir, The next Sex (1949)
In nature, male and woman are distinct. She-elephants are gregarious, he-elephants solitary. Male zebra finches are loquacious – the females mute. Woman inexperienced spoon worms are two hundred,000 moments more substantial than their male mates. These striking differences are biological – nevertheless they result in differentiation in social roles and talent acquisition.
youtube
Alan Pease, writer of a guide titled “Why Adult males Don’t Pay attention and girls Can’t Examine Maps”, believes that Women of all ages are spatially-challenged when compared with Adult men. The British organization, Admiral Insurance plan, done a examine of 50 % one million statements. They observed that “Ladies had been almost 2 times as very likely as Males to possess a collision in a vehicle park, 23 p.c far more likely to strike a stationary car, and fifteen percent more likely to reverse into One more automobile” (Reuters).
Nonetheless gender “distinctions” are frequently the results of bad scholarship. Contemplate Admiral insurance’s details. As Britain’s Automobile Affiliation (AA) properly pointed out – women motorists are likely to make extra small journeys all around towns and searching facilities and these contain Regular parking. As a result their ubiquity in specific styles of claims. Pertaining to Women of all ages’s alleged spatial deficiency, in Britain, women are outperforming boys in scholastic aptitude tests – which includes geometry and maths – considering that 1988.
Within an Op-Ed revealed because of the Ny Situations on January 23, 2005, Olivia Judson cited this example
“Beliefs that Guys are intrinsically much better at this or which have consistently brought about discrimination and prejudice, after which they’ve been proved to generally be nonsense. Women of all ages had been assumed to not be planet-course musicians. But when American symphony orchestras introduced blind auditions while in the 1970’s – the musician performs behind a display screen in order that his or her gender is invisible to Individuals listening – the amount of women supplied Careers in professional orchestras greater. Equally, in science, studies from the ways that grant programs are evaluated have demonstrated that Ladies are more likely to get funding when These reading through the programs don't know the sex from the applicant.”
On another wing of your divide, Anthony Clare, a British psychiatrist and author of “On Guys” wrote:
“In the beginning from the 21st century it can be hard to avoid the summary that Adult males are in really serious trouble. Throughout the globe, made and establishing, antisocial habits is basically male. Violence, sexual abuse of youngsters, illicit drug use, alcohol misuse, gambling, all are overwhelmingly male things to do. The courts and prisons bulge with men. In regards to aggression, delinquent habits, hazard having and social mayhem, Adult men earn gold.”
Males also mature later, die earlier, tend to be more susceptible to infections and many forms of most cancers, are more likely to be dyslexic, to have problems with a host of psychological well being Conditions, including Notice Deficit Hyperactivity Condition (ADHD), and to dedicate suicide.
In her e book, “Stiffed: The Betrayal from the American Male”, Susan Faludi describes a crisis of masculinity subsequent the breakdown of manhood models and work and household buildings in the last five decades. While in the movie “Boys don’t Cry”, a teenage Woman binds her breasts and functions the male in the caricatural relish of stereotypes of virility. Being a man is merely a state of intellect, the movie indicates.
But Exactly what does it really necessarily mean being a “male” or a “female”? Are gender id and sexual Choices genetically decided? Can they be decreased to 1’s sex? Or are they amalgams of biological, social, and psychological things in frequent interaction? Are they immutable lifelong features or dynamically evolving frames of self-reference?
In the aforementioned Big apple Occasions Op-Ed, Olivia Judson opines:
“Several sex distinctions are usually not, hence, the results of his owning a person gene although she has another. Instead, These are attributable to the way individual genes behave if they discover themselves in him rather than her. The magnificent difference between male and feminine eco-friendly spoon worms, as an example, has nothing at all to accomplish with their getting various genes: Every single inexperienced spoon worm larva could go In either case. Which sexual intercourse it results in being depends upon whether it satisfies a feminine throughout its 1st three months of life. If it meets a female, it gets to be male and prepares to regurgitate; if it doesn’t, it gets woman and settles right into a crack on the sea flooring.”
Yet, specific traits attributed to at least one’s intercourse are certainly superior accounted for via the requires of one’s setting, by cultural variables, the entire process of socialization, gender roles, and what George Devereux known as “ethnopsychiatry” in “Simple Difficulties of Ethnopsychiatry” (University of Chicago Push, 1980). He proposed to divide the unconscious in to the id (the element which was generally instinctual and unconscious) and the “ethnic unconscious” (repressed materials that was as soon as aware). The latter is mostly molded by prevailing cultural mores and features all our defense mechanisms and a lot of the superego.
So, how can we inform whether or not our sexual position is generally inside our blood or in our brains?
The scrutiny of borderline scenarios of human sexuality – notably the transgendered or intersexed – can generate clues as to the distribution and relative weights of biological, social, and psychological determinants of gender identification formation.
The outcomes of a review conducted by Uwe Hartmann, Hinnerk Becker, and Claudia Rueffer-Hesse in 1997 and titled “Self and Gender: Narcissistic Pathology and Individuality Components in Gender Dysphoric Sufferers”, published within the “Intercontinental Journal of Transgenderism”, “suggest important psychopathological features and narcissistic dysregulation in a considerable proportion of sufferers.” Are these “psychopathological elements” basically reactions to fundamental physiological realities and improvements? Could social ostracism and labeling have induced them in the “clients”?
The authors conclude:
“The cumulative evidence of our research … is consistent with the watch that gender dysphoria is actually a dysfunction of your sense of self as has actually been proposed by Beitel (1985) or Pffflin (1993). The central problem in our patients is about identity plus the self generally speaking along with the transsexual want is apparently an try at reassuring and stabilizing the self-coherence which in turn can cause a further destabilization In the event the self is currently much too fragile. Within this perspective your body is instrumentalized to make a perception of identification plus the splitting symbolized inside the hiatus involving the rejected system-self and also other elements of the self is more between very good and terrible objects than amongst masculine and feminine.”
Freud, Kraft-Ebbing, and Fliess instructed that we've been all bisexual to a particular Real Life Cam Sex degree. As early as 1910, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld argued, in Berlin, that absolute genders are “abstractions, invented extremes”. The consensus nowadays is always that just one’s sexuality is, generally, a psychological construct which demonstrates gender function orientation.
Joanne Meyerowitz, a professor of history at Indiana College as well as editor with the Journal of American Heritage observes, in her not too long ago released tome, “How Sexual intercourse Transformed: A Background of Transsexuality in The usa”, the quite this means of masculinity and femininity is in regular flux.
Transgender activists, suggests Meyerowitz, insist that gender and sexuality depict “unique analytical types”. The The big apple Moments wrote in its critique in the e-book: “Some male-to-woman transsexuals have intercourse with Adult males and connect with themselves homosexuals. Some woman-to-male transsexuals have intercourse with Gals and get in touch with themselves lesbians. Some transsexuals connect with them selves asexual.”
So, it really is all from the thoughts, you see.
This would be getting it too significantly. A considerable body of scientific proof factors to your genetic and Organic underpinnings of sexual behavior and Tastes.
The German science journal, “Geo”, described just lately that the males in the fruit fly “drosophila melanogaster” switched from heterosexuality to homosexuality since the temperature while in the lab was elevated from 19 to 30 levels Celsius. They reverted to chasing girls as it absolutely was decreased.
The brain structures of homosexual sheep are distinct to Those people of straight sheep, a study carried out not long ago by the Oregon Overall health & Science College as well as U.S. Section of Agriculture Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho, discovered. Related discrepancies ended up identified in between gay Guys and straight types in 1995 in Holland and in other places. The preoptic place of your hypothalamus was greater in heterosexual Adult men than in each homosexual men and straight Ladies.
According an short article, titled “When Sexual Advancement Goes Awry”, by Suzanne Miller, released inside the September 2000 difficulty with the “Environment and I”, several health-related conditions give rise to sexual ambiguity. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), involving abnormal androgen manufacturing by the adrenal cortex, ends in blended genitalia. Somebody with the whole androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) provides a vagina, exterior female genitalia and operating, androgen-creating, testes – but no uterus or fallopian tubes.
People with the rare 5-alpha reductase deficiency syndrome are born with ambiguous genitalia. They appear at first to become ladies. At puberty, this sort of someone develops testicles and his clitoris swells and becomes a penis. Hermaphrodites have both ovaries and testicles (each, in most cases, alternatively undeveloped). In some cases the ovaries and testicles are merged into a chimera named ovotestis.
These types of people have the chromosomal composition of a woman together with traces with the Y, male, chromosome. All hermaphrodites have a large penis, nevertheless hardly ever produce sperm. Some hermaphrodites build breasts for the duration of puberty and menstruate. Not many even get Expecting and give birth.
Anne Fausto-Sterling, a developmental geneticist, professor of clinical science at Brown University, and creator of “Sexing the Body”, postulated, in 1993, a continuum of 5 sexes to supplant The present dimorphism: males, merms (male pseudohermaphrodites), herms (genuine hermaphrodites), ferms (woman pseudohermaphrodites), and ladies.
Intersexuality (hermpahroditism) can be a purely natural human condition. We have been all conceived Along with the probable to develop into either intercourse. The embryonic developmental default is woman. A series of triggers in the to start with months of pregnancy areas the fetus on the path to maleness.
In uncommon circumstances, some Ladies Have got a male’s genetic make-up (XY chromosomes) and vice versa. But, in the vast majority of scenarios, on the list of sexes is clearly chosen. Relics of your stifled sex stay, though. Girls possess the clitoris being a style of symbolic penis. Adult men have breasts (mammary glands) and nipples.
The Encyclopedia Britannica 2003 edition describes the formation of ovaries and testes Consequently:
“Inside the younger embryo a pair of gonads create which have been indifferent or neutral, displaying no indication whether or not they are destined to acquire into testes or ovaries. There's also two different duct systems, certainly one of which might establish into the feminine program of oviducts and relevant equipment and the opposite in the male sperm duct program. As development of your embryo proceeds, either the male or the feminine reproductive tissue differentiates inside the at first neutral gonad in the mammal.”
Nonetheless, sexual Tastes, genitalia and in many cases secondary sex attributes, for instance facial and pubic hair are 1st order phenomena. Can genetics and biology account for male and woman conduct patterns and social interactions (“gender identification”)? Can the multi-tiered complexity and richness of human masculinity and femininity come up from less difficult, deterministic, constructing blocks?
Sociobiologists would have us think so.
For illustration: the fact that we're mammals is astonishingly typically disregarded. Most mammalian families are made up of mom and offspring. Males are peripatetic absentees. Arguably, high rates of divorce and beginning away from wedlock coupled with rising promiscuity simply reinstate this natural “default method”, observes Lionel Tiger, a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University in New Jersey. That a few quarters of all divorces are initiated by Gals tends to aid this look at.
On top of that, gender identification is decided through gestation, claim some scholars.
Milton Diamond of the University of Hawaii and Dr. Keith Sigmundson, a practising psychiatrist, analyzed the A great deal-celebrated John/Joan case. An unintentionally castrated regular male was surgically modified to search woman, and elevated as a lady but to no avail. He reverted to being a male at puberty.
His gender identification appears to are already inborn (assuming he was not subjected to conflicting cues from his human setting). The situation is extensively described in John Colapinto’s tome “As Nature Built Him: The Boy Who Was Lifted as a woman”.
HealthScoutNews cited a analyze published inside the November 2002 concern of “Boy or girl Progress”. The scientists, from City University of London, identified that the extent of maternal testosterone for the duration of pregnancy influences the habits of neonatal girls and renders it far more masculine. “Significant testosterone” ladies “get pleasure from routines usually considered male conduct, like twiddling with trucks or guns”. Boys’ behavior remains unaltered, according to the study.
However, other Students, like John Funds, insist that newborns undoubtedly are a “blank slate” in terms of their gender identity is anxious. This really is also the prevailing perspective. Gender and intercourse-role identities, we have been taught, are entirely fashioned in a means of socialization which ends because of the 3rd yr of daily life. The Encyclopedia Britannica 2003 edition sums it up Therefore:
“Like a person’s notion of her or his sexual intercourse purpose, gender identification develops by means of parental case in point, social reinforcement, and language. Dad and mom train sexual intercourse-correct habits to their small children from an early age, which habits is reinforced as the child grows more mature and enters a wider social planet. As the kid acquires language, he also learns incredibly early the distinction in between “he” and “she” and understands which pertains to him- or herself.”
So, which happens to be it – nature or nurture? There isn't any disputing The truth that our sexual physiology and, in all likelihood, our sexual Choices are identified from the womb. Men and women are different – physiologically and, Consequently, also psychologically.
Society, by its brokers – foremost among that happen to be family, friends, and teachers – represses or encourages these genetic propensities. It does so by propagating “gender roles” – gender-distinct lists of alleged attributes, permissible behavior styles, and prescriptive morals and norms. Our “gender identity” or “sex function” is shorthand to the way we use our purely natural genotypic-phenotypic endowments in conformity with social-cultural “gender roles”.
Inevitably as being the composition and bias of such lists adjust, so does the that means of staying “male” or “woman”. Gender roles are consistently redefined by tectonic shifts within the definition and performing of standard social units, including the nuclear family along with the office. The cross-fertilization of gender-connected cultural memes renders “masculinity” and “femininity” fluid concepts.
One particular’s sex equals just one’s bodily machines, an aim, finite, and, usually, immutable inventory. But our endowments is often put to many makes use of, in different cognitive and affective contexts, and matter to varying exegetic frameworks. Rather than “sexual intercourse” – “gender” is, therefore, a socio-cultural narrative. Equally heterosexual and homosexual Males ejaculate. Both equally straight and lesbian Girls climax. What distinguishes them from each other are subjective introjects of socio-cultural conventions, not aim, immutable “facts”.
In “The New Gender Wars”, published in the November/December 2000 issue of “Psychology Currently”, Sarah Blustain sums up the “bio-social” design proposed by Mice Eagly, a professor of psychology at Northwestern College along with a previous student of his, Wendy Wooden, now a professor on the Texas A&M University:
“Like (the evolutionary psychologists), Eagly and Wood reject social constructionist notions that every one gender discrepancies are developed by lifestyle. But on the problem of where they come from, they response in a different way: not our genes but our roles in Culture. This narrative concentrates on how societies respond to the basic biological variances – Gentlemen’s energy and women’s reproductive abilities – And the way they stimulate men and women to follow specific designs.
‘In the event you’re investing plenty of time nursing your child’, explains Wooden, ‘Then you really don’t have the chance to dedicate huge quantities of time for you to developing specialised abilities and fascinating jobs outside of the house’. And, provides Eagly, ‘if Females are billed with caring for infants, what occurs is women are more nurturing. Societies need to make the Grownup program get the job done [so] socialization of girls is organized to give them encounter in nurturing’.
In keeping with this interpretation, given that the environment alterations, so will the assortment and texture of gender dissimilarities. At a time in Western nations when female reproduction is amazingly low, nursing is totally optional, childcare solutions are many, and mechanization lessens the necessity of
