Captain America: Making of a War Hero into a Symbol of Hope

We all know that Captain America debuted in a title named after him by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941. He was seen punching Hitler right in the face but many may not know that this was done well before the US had decided to enter World War 2. In fact, at the time, the US was more concerned about its Pacific theater than the Atlantic. Nevertheless, Timely publishes the issue and Captain America gets established as a war hero from the start, who alongside his sidekick Bucky, is fighting fascism in continental Europe which is falling to the Reich like a house of cards

Cap at the time is the symbol of Freedom, anti-fascism, or as he would later be called the Sentinel of Liberty but there was one thing missing at Marvel. The House of Ideas lacked an inspiring figure like Superman among its flagship characters. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Invincible Iron Man, and even the Avengers had issues with themselves as well as with each other but a figure whom readers can look up to was something not present. Cap remained a 'man out of time' when he gets discovered by the Avengers but it takes a decade for writers to get him accustomed to the realities of America that were haunting the country from the streets to the Oval Office (Thank You, Jack Kirby and Steve Englehart)

Well into the bronze age era of comics, and under Jim Shooter's reign of the bullpen, a young J.M. DeMatteis shows his potential for storytelling with his first assignment of Captain America no. 261 which would introduce Nomad to the readers for the first time. This issue was supposed to be a collaboration with the real-life Captain America TV movie starring Reb Brown but Jim had other ideas. Issues 261-263 would find Steve Rogers going to California to meet Galactic Films for the upcoming movie about him (in Earth-616) but his real mission was to investigate Nomad's activities on the streets of LA which would turn out to be a deep conspiracy by one of his oldest arch nemesis

After becoming a regular writer on the Captain America series, DeMatteis, Mick Zeck, and John Beatty wrote a story that was way ahead of its time. Today's resurgence of the far left in the world and in the US and the reactionary rise of the far right was being seen by comic book writers like DeMatteis way before many had thought of it. Surprisingly it was a feeble populist villain by the name of Everyman doing the talk, not the Red Skull

In the story, the disenfranchised youth who looked up to Everyman realize their mistake of choosing 'despair over hope' but what causes them to see this is the humility Cap showed despite being spit at multiple times (literally). His eagerness to listen to the young, to the future of the country and their grievances with America, the American Dream leads to a change of heart

This single-issue story would showcase Cap in a different light. Steve Englehart had given Cap a rude awakening that patriotism can't come at the expense of truth and justice in Secret Empire. He showed Cap's disillusionment with the powers that be in America. DeMatteis took the opposite route to show Cap what's corrupting the country's future, and giving rise to the 'enemy within' who can cause anarchy. It wouldn't be wrong to say that Christopher Nolan's Bane (Dark Knight Rises) reminds us of Everyman but what's important to remember is that it was J.M. DeMatteis who warned us before anyone else did

This story is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire run by DeMatteis is one of the most underrated as it gets overshadowed by the works of Jack Kirby, Steve Englehart, and Mark Gruenwald. Like his works for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, his work for Cap remains one of the best runs ever

Hey y’all know how Brits like to argue about American cheese not being a real cheese and there’s a secondary debate as to whether it melts or not. I accidentally figured out that they’re not talking about American cheese AT ALL.

So there’s the most common brand of American cheese the Kraft Singles which seems weird compared to regular cheese because they’re slices of cheese made with added milk to make it all melty.

And then it turns out there’s this product packaged extremely like Kraft singles that might look like an off brand competitor if you don’t read the labels called “Imitation Cheese” that looks like

They are made with something called “Cheese analogues” which are “products used as culinary replacements for cheese. They are usually products made by blending other fats or proteins” and are designed not to met like normal cheese.

So people have been out here picking up imitation cheese and calling it American cheese because they probably assumed it was off brand Kraft singles and calling it garbage without knowing it’s an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PRODUCT!!!

THE BOB HOPE SHOW

May 3, 1949

“The Bob Hope Show” ~ After a dozen years as “The Pepsodent Show”, Pepsodent pulled its sponsorship in June 1948. Despite cancellation, Hope still continued on radio. Lever Brothers' Swan soap began sponsoring the show, which premiered on September 14, 1948 on NBC. Doris Day  was the only one of Hope's former co-stars to continued to perform on the new show. Airing Tuesdays at 9, the program was at direct competition with the new sitcom “Life with Luigi”, which aired at the same time on CBS. “Life with Luigi” proved to be the season's new hit, crushing “The Bob Hope Show” in the ratings. Like Pepsodent before, due to the poor ratings, Swan pulled its sponsorship in 1950. The last Swan-sponsored episode of the program aired on June 13. On October 3, 1950 “The Bob Hope Show” premiered under the sponsorship of Chesterfield cigarettes. Over the next five years, it aired under various sponsors, including Jell-O and General Foods, in various timeslots until its final episode aired on April 21, 1955.

Bob Hope made his radio debut on NBC in May 1937. He became a top-rated fixture on Tuesday nights with his theme song, "Thanks for the Memories". His legendary broadcasts from military bases around the world helped boost American morale during the dark days of World War II. Over the years, his radio regulars included Jerry Colonna, Brenda and Cobina, Vera Vague, Wendall Niles, and orchestras led by Skinnay Ennis and Les Brown. Featured singers on the show included Judy Garland, Frances Langford, Doris Day, and Gloria Jean. Hope's radio career lasted well into the mid-1950s. By then, he had become a major movie and television star doing four films, and numerous television programs with Lucille Ball. He died on July 29, 2003, at the age of 100.

Lucille Ball was then a film star with her own weekly radio show, “My Favorite Husband”, which had just aired “Vacation Time” on April 29, 1949.  Her new film with Bob Hope, Sorrowful Jones, would premiere in June 1949.  In February 1949 she had made her first national TV appearance on “Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall”, quickly followed by an episode of “The Milton Berle Show.”

Doris Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown & His Band of Renown. She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967. Day was one of the biggest film stars in the 1950s and '60s.   Surprisingly, Lucille Ball never acted opposite Doris Day in films or television, but she did interview her for her CBS radio show “Let’s Talk To Lucy” #144 on March 22, 1965. She died in 2019 at age 97.

Irene Ryan is the least remembered of Bob Hope’s female stooges. Her mousy Miss Ryan character told Hope week after week that she was, “Feeling about as well as could be expected,” before launching into a string of hypochondriac jokes. Irene Noblette and husband Tim Ryan went into radio in 1933 after a vaudeville and minor movie career.  They kept busy in radio for ten years, four of them as stars of their own shows, including 1937's Royal Crown Revue.   After their divorce in 1943, Irene kept the Ryan name and worked in some 20 low budget movie comedies and shorts plus occasional radio roles. While with Hope’s troupe she continued her screen work and drifted into occasional television roles in the 1950's. In 1962, at age 60 and ready to retire as a relative unknown, Irene Ryan was cast as “Granny” Daisy Mae Moses in a new television sitcom, “The Beverly Hillbillies”.  The show was an immediate hit that endured for nine seasons on CBS-TV.  In 1972, when she was 70, she co-starred on Broadway in the musical hit Pippin.  She collapsed on stage a year later and died of a stroke, leaving a million dollars to the Irene Ryan Foundation which provides scholarships to collegiate acting students. 

Bill Farrell was first spotted by Bob Hope in a night club in Buffalo, New York in 1947. Hope was impressed with Farrell's powerful baritone voice and smooth delivery and he invited Farrell to Hollywood. Hope featured him on his weekly radio show. In 1949 Farrell enjoyed a minor hit with his recording of "Circus" which reached #26 in the Billboard charts.  

The Four Hits and A Miss consisted of four male singers and one female (thus the word "miss" in their name has a double meaning). They were variously known as Three Hits and A Miss, and even Six Hits and a Miss, as members came and went, mainly due to wartime service. They performed musical numbers in several Hollywood films of the 1940s.

The New Les Brown Band performed with Bob Hope on radio, stage and television for almost fifty years. They did 18 USO Tours, and entertained over three million people. The first film that Brown and the band appeared in was Seven Days' Leave (1942) starring Victor Mature and Lucille Ball. 

Hy Averback (Announcer) played Charlie Appleby on “I Love Lucy” in “Baby Pictures” (ILL S3;E5), although the character would be re-cast with George O'Hanlon in season six. He played another Charlie, Charlie Pomerantz, in “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E21) on March 14, 1955. Averback transitioned from acting to directing, becoming Emmy nominated for “M*A*S*H.”

Hope introduces “his favorite redhead” - Lucille Ball - and they discuss their new movie, Sorrowful Jones. He admires her hair. 

BOB: “If you get together with ‘The Boy with Green Hair’ you’d make a terrific traffic signal!” 

He thanks her for not making a crack about his nose. She says she appreciated it. 

LUCY: “It was such an easy place to hang my coat every morning.”

Lucy says she loved working at Paramount and hopes that they make another picture together soon.  He asks her about “My Favorite Husband” on ‘that other network’.  She says that her show has great ratings.  She tells him the premise of the show.  

He compares her domestic situation on radio with the couples he he has seen in films, like Kentucky (1938), a Romeo and Juliet story set amidst horse racing in Kentucky. They launch into a sketch playing Ma and Pa. 

PA: “A-Okay, Ma. Get the children in the house and we’ll eat.”  MA: “Alright, I’ll get Elam, Rufus, Walter, Albert, Effie Mae, Janie, Betty Lou,  Charles, Si, Jack, Fred, George, Ellie, Billy, Clarence, Hiram, Helen, and Jean.” PA: “And I’ll get John, Harvey, Cletus, Zeke, Daniel Boone, Judy, Joan, Nancy, Carolyn, Birdie, Eleanor, Little Daisy, Sam, Kate, Tom, Abner, and Teddy.” MA: “Well, that takes care of the twins. Who’ll get the single ones?”

Hope says another interesting husband and wife is a Brooklyn cab driver and his wife.  The band plays “The Sidewalks of New York”.  Hope and Ball do Brooklyn accents for their characters. 

In closing, as usual, Hope sings “Thank for the Memory” with special lyrics about the episode, including the Swan Soap CARE Campaign.

And here you can see the moment I silently lost my mind last night. That is a pack of Kraft deluxe American cheese, room temperature, hidden behind some crackers.

Now look y'all, I get it when you got the wrong kind, or your kid grabbed it while you were distracted, or went over budget, whatever, but Y'ALL KNOW DARN TOOTIN WELL THAT DOESN'T GO THERE AND CHEESE NEEDS TO BE KEPT COLD. Most people have had cheese in their fridge at some point. Everyone who has ever been to a grocery store and bought cheese know it was in a cooler when they picked it up and it feels cool to the touch.

And what really gets my goat is that the cheese was literally 10-12 steps to the left. From where this cheese was hidden, if you face the shelf and turn your head to the left, the cheese is right there directly in your line of vision. And, I counted, about 10-12 steps away.

Look I know $5-$6 (plus tax) isn't a ton of money to a huge corporation like Walmart. But you and this cheese aren't the only instance of crap like this happening. It happens every single dang day. We can't sell refrigerated or frozen stuff after it's been left out that long. It's given to claims so they can log the loss and it's tossed. That profit loss gets made up somewhere else eventually. But it's not coming out of the Walton's pockets or the CEO's pocket. It's going to get made up with cutting hours or bonuses or something that only hurts employees like me and my managers.

Y'all that do this are on my last nerve. You're wasting food and being lazy. Knock it the heck off. I get it's embarrassing to tell the cashier you went over budget. But trust me, I wouldn't judge you or want you to feel bad. It's fine, seriously, just give me whatever you're putting back and I'll try to get the cold stuff put up while it's still good. If anyone gives you crap, let a manager know or mention it in the survey on the back of your receipt.

Also, any rumors you hear that Walmart has employees walking around looking for stuff to put back is a lie. We're lucky to get enough people scheduled to do their regular jobs. Even if someone is casually walking by, they probably won't see it if you hide it. We also don't have someone live viewing the cameras all day who will see you do this and go put it back after you walk away.

All of this also applies for people who put stuff they don't want in the candy in the checkout lane or on top of the drink cooler. Knock that off too. You know the cashier will find it eventually so just give it to them. You don't know how irritating it is to run a whole cart full of go-backs just to find something else hidden in the aisle when you bring your empty cart to the front.

I know it's my job to put stuff up and tidy up my lane, but it's not my only duty. And no, you're not getting paid to "work". It's picking up after yourself to be a decent person.

Ok, I've said my piece. I'll hear no arguments to justify being lazy for the heck of it. If you're disabled, ok, but employees will still help you if you ask nicely.

i am watching regular tv for the first time in a while and i just saw a commercial for kraft singles (do they even need a commercial?) where they showed literally the most unappetizing food in the world where they just... melted one kraft single over regular food and it looked disgusting but they were acting like it was delicious. like yeah you can melt one kraft single over brocolli but does that mean you should? no. i finally understand the way europeans look at american food cuz if i had no context that the us does have lots of other cheese options, and i saw this commercial where they melted a slice, didn't even mix it, and acted like it was normal, i would also think our food was disgusting

  It’s October in Minneapolis, which means a number of things depending on who you talk to. Some people refer to it as pumpkin spice season, people who like to shit on other people’s fun talk shit about pumpkin spice season, people over nine years old marvel at the way leaves change color like that’s some shit they’ve never seen before on an annual basis, errbody in the club gettin on Tinder for cuffing season, and scarf enthusiasts are losing their goddamned nut over their time to shine, but mostly, it just means shitty, pissy weather, night and day.    When it’s not windy, it’s raining; when it’s not raining, it’s just gloomy; when it’s not gloomy, it’s windy; and when it’s not some combination of these bullshit elements driving me to - Wait, did they say the words “trap house jazz” on NPR? Whatever, when it’s not windy, raining, gloomy, shitty, pissy, or some combination of those, it’s fucking freezing and the landlord doesn’t know to turn the fucking heat on. “But, Charlie,” you say, “the leaves change color.”    Say that shit to me one more time and I’ll strangle your ass. I swear to fucking god.    Anyway, that’s just why there hasn’t been a Sandwich Bully for three weeks; it’s just been too shitty to go outside. You know what I did yesterday? It was 42°F, you think I conducted any urban exploring in 42°F? (That’s 5½°C... That’s right, I’m flexing my alt-code muscles.) I baked a frozen pizza (chicken pesto, if you’re curious, and it was meh) and watched a couple Shane Black movies.    You know what I did last weekend? No, I’m seriously asking. I don’t remember what the fuck I did. It probably involved staying inside because it was shitty, gloomy, damp, pissy, and nut-shrinking cold outside and you’re right I’m angry, we got shorted on our summer this year, we had a blizzard in May. That shit aint right. Why did the settlers think establishing a major metropolitan hub up in this motherfucker was a good idea? It’s cold all the time, mosquitoes are the size of cats, gnats everywhere, fucking winter lasts eight months, everybody’s obese because of that, suicide rates seven thousand percent higher than the global average, really!!    But today it’s 55°F, sunny, not a cloud in the sky. I had to take to my bike and get out and just be out. And then I realized that I hadn’t done a Sandwich Bully in a while, so while Ophira Eisenberg wrapped up Ask Me Another, I started Googling delis and then just sandwiches and I narrowed it down to a few choices:    Broder’s Deli (next to last one in that link and frequently mentioned in our halllowed halls)    Lowry Hill Meats    Northbound Smokehouse (top one in that link)

   I also considered just walking to Icehouse, where I never go, because they have a Reuben that - and check the fuck out of this shit out - consists of pastrami, “pickled cabbage”, fontina, and remoulade on rye. There are so many places to start there that I kind of want to hold off on my bloviating over the theory and principles of the Reuben until I actually eat one of these damned things and seeing, “Could it work?” (Preview of my own thoughts on the subject: If they can’t commit to just sauerkraut and have to go with “pickled cabbage”... Uh... Nuh.) †    Now, going to Broder’s would be fine and dandy but it wouldn’t be anything to write about because I can’t keep praising them. And the more I thought about Northbound, the more I didn’t want to go in, alone, get spotted by neighborhood regulars taking a picture of my food and have to explain to them what a blog is nor did I want to wait, so I went to Lowry Hill after a ride around Cedar Lake, went in, asked young Jason Priestly looking homie if he recommended the mysteriously titled “French Exit” which is really just your choice of meat and some fancy cheese with mustard and aioli on a baguette or the Turkey Melt which, you guessed it, is a grilled cheese with turkey on it, here billed identically on the website and in the physical space (psst! Will every other deli in Minneapolis catch up to that? Please and Thank You.) as turkey (obvs), house made American cheese (you read that right, hell, I read that right), aioli, and mustard on brioche.    Jason Priestly tells me the turkey melt, if he has to pick between the two, nothing wrong with the French Exit, it’s just that he likes hot sandwiches and the French Exit is cold. I say let’s do that and grab a Mexican Coke.    Wow, that’s kind of a catchy line. Take it a different way and I could employ that in multiple situations. “Let’s do that and grab a Mexican Coke.” Yeah. I like the way that sounds. Going to put that on a t-shirt, man.

LET’S DO THAT AND GRAB A MEXICAN COKE

   Look at that. That’s US$24.95 on Etsy, baby. That’s a moneymaker.    ANYhoo, after I remind you I exist and drag you along on this journey, I’m sure you’re wondering how this sandwich tasted, especially since last time I went there, I disparaged them a little as all I could taste on their roast beef was vinegar.    Well, I want to make a musical reference. Will this work?

   Get it? Because they’re redeemed, see, and - Wh- No? No good? Not working for you? Fuck you, then.    So the turkey itself was I want to say oven roasted as opposed to smoked as it was perfectly juicy and they seasoned it just right, to get rid of that cardboard turkey taste. The cheese was mildly tangy and didn’t have the same sodiumtastic flavor of, say, Kraft Singles. It paired nicely with the turkey. But the real socially progressive third party candidate embattled by their controversial past in this key battleground state during a midterm election whose discourse has largely been dominated by muck raking and accusations (and acknowledgments) of scandal is, surprisingly, the sweet coarse ground mustard paired with the aioli.    This is a study in the condiments steering the flavor of the sandwich away from just a hot turkey & american, though these were quite good turkey and american, to something semisweet and complex. However, I will note that I didn’t find the sandwich complete until I added the seeded jalapeño slices on the sandwich, giving it a mild kick.    Now, was this anything to lose my mind over? Nah but I was pleasantly surprised. Would I pay nine dollars for this again? Mm, like if I was on a date but I remember where I’m from: I’m from being broke. So twelve dollars for a sandwich and a pop? That’s not something I want to make a habit out of. But considering they probably slaughtered this turkey and they actually made their American cheese and their aioli and their mustard (and Cecil’s charges you the same price for shipped in and say they just don’t have the space to do that themselves), that’s the price you pay for - I hate to use this word - artisanal. That’s what’s going on there: Artisanal meat craft. Their meat case? Has actual parts of animals in it. Not smoked and wrapped in plastic, no. Just bare-assed parts of animals. Pink and red flesh on white bones. It’s the real deal.    It’s just too bad they don’t have kielbasa.    Go give them your money. †  Update, 27 October 2018: Icehouse doesn’t have a Reuben anymore for reasons unknown. They tried to sell me a pastrami and egg sandwich instead and I was all, “Nah.”

Those Ridiculous National Food Days Are Good for Small Business

As every American knows by now, the country celebrates National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 18.

Tamara Keefe, founder of St. Louis mini chain Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Ice Cream, is ready. “This is our busiest day of the year in terms of customers and sales,” she says. Keefe estimates that “on a very busy hot summer Saturday, we take out 1,000 or 1,100 people.” On National Ice Cream Day, that number rises to 1,500 to 2,000. “The turnover has almost doubled.”

It’s going to be tough for Keefe to beat last year’s performance. During the pandemic, she saw a notable surge in her only open store on National Ice Cream Day. “We had 2,500 people at this location. We made about $ 15,000 in sales that day. ”

We’re celebrating Ice Cream for Breakfast Day earlier this year at Clementine’s.

Inaugurated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and celebrated on the third Sunday of July, National Ice Cream Day is one of the biggest food and beverage holidays that bombards people’s social media feeds and inboxes. The events are reminiscent of everything from baked ham with pineapple (April 16) to moldy cheese (October 9) to “Pizza with the works except anchovies” (November 12).

They are a powerful marketing tool – never as good as during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ben Van Leeuwen, founder of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, says Ice Cream Day is “a big deal for us. We always see sales increases of 15 to 20%. ”He expects his company to see an increase of up to 20% this year, even if the viral Mac & Cheese ice cream cooperation with the Kraft Foods Group Inc. is not included. This Mac & Cheese Day (July 14th) creation sold out online in an hour.

At Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, based in Columbus, Ohio and with 59 stores across the country, founder Jeni Britton Bauer traditionally turned down National Ice Cream Day. “I’ve always thought it was low-hanging fruit – that it doesn’t pay that much, but it gives you something to talk about.” Still, their stores saw sales increase by around 15% in 2020 compared to an average summer Sunday .

Van Leeuwen sees a spike of at least 15% on National Ice Cream Day on a regular basis.

A notable alliance of Food Days is NationalToday, com, which lists all types of holidays but pays special attention to food and drink. It categorizes more than 300 major culinary holidays and over 700 smaller ones. The platform was founded in 2017 by Ben Kaplan and is owned by TOP Worldwide, an Austin, Texas-based marketing company with offices in more than 20 countries.

One way to start a food vacation is the way ice cream did – through the government statement. You can also gain traction when you’re supported by a brand looking to promote a single product or passionate people who want their favorite snack to be in the spotlight for the time being. “Some have an unknown origin, but are now anchored in the mindset of consumers and are therefore celebrated,” says Kaplan.

A fee must cover the creation of a holiday if it has been approved. “It’s often thousands of dollars,” he adds. “Companies and brands can also choose whether they want our help with influencers, social media, digital content or PR campaigns for everything related to holidays.”

International Dark ‘n Stormy Day is one of the newer holidays on the National Today calendar. It all started in 2020 when June 9 was declared the official Rum-Ginger-Beer Highball Day. During the six-month preliminary negotiations with National Today, Gosling’s trademarked rum had to submit background material to prove its legitimacy. “We provided a copy of the Dark ‘n Stormy trademark certificate. It helped that June 9, 2020 was the brand’s 40th anniversary, ”said Malcolm Gosling Jr., whose family started the company.

However, such large sales spikes on National Food and Beverage Days can be temporary. When many restaurants were closed and people locked in their homes last year, a local ice cream cone gained even more prominence, especially for social media and hashtag purposes. How Diet and Western Eating Habits Impact Health and Well-being?

New study examines what the Tsimane consume on a regular basis and compares it to that of the Moseten, a neighboring population with similar language and ancestry, but whose eating habits and lifeways are more impacted by outside forces. The researchers' findings appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

From the standpoint of heart health, the Tsimane are a model group. A population indigenous to the Bolivian Amazon, the Tsimane demonstrate next to no heart disease. They have minimal hypertension, low prevalence of obesity and and their cholesterol levels are relatively healthy. And those factors don't seem to change with age.

‘The high-calorie (2,433-2,738 kcal/day) Tsimane diet was characterized by high carbohydrate and protein intake, and low fat intake (64, 21 and 15 percent of the diet, respectively). ’

Also minimal is the incidence of Type-2 diabetes. Which leads scientists to consider the role of diet in the Tsimane's cardiovascular health -- and how it might be impacted over time as the population becomes more exposed to globalization and market forces. That's where UC Santa Barbara anthropologists Thomas Kraft and Michael Gurven come in. They are part of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project, supported by the National Institutes of Health.

"Our prior work showed that the Tsimane have the healthiest hearts ever studied, so naturally there's a lot of interest in understanding why and how," said Michael Gurven, a professor of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, co-director of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project and the paper's senior author. "The obvious first contender is, what are they eating? And are they eating what we think is best for heart health?

"We conducted a detailed analysis of the Tsimane diet and then compared it to what modern Americans typically eat, and to the diets that claim to be heart healthy," he continued. "Maybe the Tsimane just happen to follow one of those without knowing about them." These diets -- Paleo, Okinawan and DASH, among others -- are often promoted because of their proposed health benefits, and in the case of Paleo, that our bodies have evolved to benefit from particular types of food.

The connection to the Moseten is an added benefit of the study. Ethnolinguistically and genetically very similar to the Tsimane, the Moseten, an isolate in Bolivia, are much more acculturated in a number of ways than are the Tsimane. "They provide a forecast of what Tsimane health might look like 20 years from now," Gurven said. "They represent what is happening to many indigenous populations over time. To what extent may changes in their diet increase the prevalence of heart disease and diabetes?"

Using the same measurement strategy employed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the researchers interviewed 1,299 Tsimane and 229 Moseten multiple times about everything they had eaten or drunk in the previous 24 hours. Using published and their own nutritional estimates for all items, and a variety of methods to estimate portion size, they provided a detailed breakdown of daily food intake.

In addition, the Tsimane don't eat a wide variety of foods, relative to the average U.S. or Moseten diet. Almost two-thirds of their calories are derived from complex carbohydrates, particularly plantains and rice. Another 16 percent comes from over 40 species of fish, and 6 percent from wild game. Only 8 percent of the diet came from markets.

Despite the low dietary diversity, the researchers found little evidence of micronutrient deficiencies in the Tsimane's daily intake. Calcium and a few vitamins (D, E and K) were in short supply, but the intake of potassium, magnesium and selenium -- often linked to cardiovascular health -- far exceeded U.S. levels. Dietary fiber intake was almost double U.S. and Moseten levels.

Over the five years of study, the researchers saw the Tsimane's total energy and carbohydrate intake increase significantly, particularly in villages near market towns. Their consumption of food additives (lard, oil, sugar and salt) also has increased significantly. The Moseten, the researchers noted, consumed substantially more sugar and cooking oil than did the Tsimane.

The conclusion: A high-energy diet rich in complex carbohydrates is associated with low cardiovascular disease risk, at least when coupled with a physically active lifestyle (Tsimane adults average 17,000 or so steps per day, compared to Americans' 5,100). Moving away from a diet that is high in fiber and low in fat, salt and processed sugar represents a serious health risk for transitioning populations. Evidence of nutrition transition in Bolivia parallels trends in increasing body fat and body mass index among Tsimane, suggesting the low prevalence of cardiovascular disease -- as among the Tsimane -- may not persist.

According to Gurven, avoiding the pitfalls of changing diets and lifestyles will be critical for groups like the Tsimane. Many other indigenous populations in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia are in similar situations. And rates of obesity, type-2 diabetes and heart disease are high among indigenous groups whose lifeways are no longer traditional -- including many North American Indian and Australian aboriginal populations.

And for the Tsimane, change is not far on the horizon. "This is a key time," said Thomas Kraft, a postdoctoral researcher in anthropology at UC Santa Barbara and the paper's lead author. "Roads are improving in the area, as is river transport with the spread of motorized boats, so people are becoming a lot less isolated compared to the past. And it's happening at a pretty rapid pace."

Anecdotally, Gurven added, the Tsimane Health and Life History Project's biomedical team is seeing more diabetic patients among the Tsimane than they have previously. That's likely due to the increased regular intake of refined sugar and fat that occurred over the course of the study. As Kraft noted, with the Tsimane's ability to buy large kilo bags of sugar and liters of cooking oil, the researchers calculated a 300 percent rise in consumption of those products. "They're basically deep frying and adding lots of sugar to drinks when they can," he said.

And consuming a lot of calories. "But they're also physically active -- not from routine exercise, but from using their bodies to acquire food from their fields and the forest," added Gurven, "which is also an important lesson. You can't look at what you're eating irrespective of what you're doing with your body. If you're physically active, you can probably get away with more flexibility in the diet."

Calorie count aside, the high carbohydrate content of the Tsimane diet isn't "unprecedented," according to Kraft. "One of the other artery-protecting diets is the Okinawan diet from Japan. It comes out at about 85 percent carbohydrate. But a common feature they share is that pretty much across the board, they're complex carbohydrates -- it's sweet potatoes in the Okinawan diet; here it's plantains and manioc."

The Moseten diet has fewer total calories and less carbohydrates than the Tsimane diet, but the Moseten eat a broader range offoods, including more fruits, vegetables, dairy and legumes. The Moseten also buy more of their food, including soda, bread, dried meat and processed items. The Moseten diet could provide insight into the Tsimane diet of the future, the researchers suggest. "We're still analyzing their health indicators, but we expect the Moseten to show more risk factors related to diabetes and heart disease," said Gurven.

In addition to finding that the Tsimane consume more calories per day than the Moseten do, the researchers note the Tsimane are also more physically active (with much of their labor devoted to the hard work of slash and burn farming, hunting, fishing and foraging). They expend more energy activity, but may also have a higher resting energy expenditure due to higher rates of infection and persistent immune activity.

Overall, the findings suggest that no single diet protocol offers the key to health. The picture is much more complicated. "It definitely sheds light on the diversity of diets that are compatible with good cardiovascular health," said Kraft.

Added Gurven, "We're at a unique point in history where for many of us, our daily decisions are more about what not to eat. We have to work hard not to overeat. Throughout most of human history, it was the opposite. It was so hard to get those calories we needed to survive."

And in terms of the Tsimane's eagerness to incorporate sugar and other additives into their diets despite the associated health risks, "Telling folks to watch what they're eating, don't eat too much of this or that -- that mentality is hard to convey when getting food is unpredictable and a daily grind," Gurven continued. "Getting calories cheaply with less effort -- who wouldn't?"
