When Caduceus returned to the Blooming Grove and the rest of the Mighty Nein scattered to the Wildmother's winds, he could scarcely admit to himself the fear he'd had that he'd be forgotten about. With such grand and heroic adventures still awaiting them, from the crests of the seas to the marbled halls of justice, who could remember the quiet, floppy-earred friend in the woods, tending to his dead folks and reconnecting with his family? He wouldn't blame them for it, even if the thought made his fine fur bristle with some strange internal cold.

But he should have known better. He should have known that the Wildmother would not let these flowers bloom so bright and bold for them to shine for the Clays' eyes only. Caduceus isn't sure how they manage it, but they come, not frequently, but enough to keep the hearth warm.

Jester and Fjord bring him tales of the sea, of pirates and monsters and narrow escapes from the law. He bakes with Jester, and he and Fjord sit and discuss their matron in the quiet hours before dawn. Every time they leave, it takes only a day or two for someone in the family to find a brand-new hand-painted sculpture of a dick hidden somewhere in the house.

When Beau and Yasha visit, the latter rarely comes inside, preferring to spend her time among the riotous flowers of the graveyard. Beau speaks cryptically of her work with the Cobalt Soul, enthralling the rest of the Clays with guessing at what she could possibly be talking about, but Caduceus likes to wander out to sit with Yasha, to speak of the blooms and the bees and the sun, and maybe of loss and regrowth as well. When they go, they take some flowers with them, pressed between the pages of a book or neatly bundled in twine, and Caduceus knows that the brief life they'll live outside of the earth is worth the smile they'll bring to his friends' faces.

For some reason, the Brenattos seem to have chosen the Blooming Grove as their vacation destination, as if they do not live full-time in what most of the continent views as the perfect getaway. Caduceus doesn't mind, is happy to educate young Luc on the various insects he happily uncovers from the tall grasses around the the Clay house. Constance is less thrilled by the errant crossbow bolts that seem to find their way into every vertical surface, but Caduceus can see the way Veth's shoulders relax when she can be somewhere quiet, far from the endless coast of Nicodranas. Each visit, right before they pack up their things and prepare to leave, Veth steps into the sun, takes a long, slow breath in, and sighs happily. "No fucking salt," she murmurs to herself, but Caduceus hears her, and he laughs.

His favorite visits, though, he thinks, are the ones he gets to facilitate between Caleb and Essek. He knows how hard it is for them to meet, how much danger the former Shadowhand puts himself in to be with the one he loves, so Caduceus is more than happy to open the Grove to them, to let the trees of the Savalirwood shield them from those who would harm them. Melora herself has a tempestuous, ill-advised love, so Caduceus likes to think she smiles particularly wide on these two wizards, who even still dance around each other like dragonflies. They take the tea Caduceus brews into the garden, and they sit in the shade where the sun cannot hurt Essek's skin, and they murmur to each other all of the things that cannot be conveyed in twenty-five words or less. They never stay for more than a day or two, and before they leave, Essek bestows a fortune's favor upon Caduceus's brow, but he never uses it. He has all the luck he needs, from the favor of the Wildmother to the endless joy his friends deliver to him with each and every visit.

So I've hit the pirate arc of my campaign 2 re-watch.

I completely forgot about Caleb and Nott scheming to keep the group together, Caleb going as far as pretending to have a heart attack to try to force more bonding. It's such a hilarious mirror of their reluctance to join the Mighty Nein in the first place.

The early bonding of the empire siblings is painful. Caleb is trying so hard Beau please humor him a little. They’re past where Caleb is convinced Beau hates him but she still gives him a hard time in a way that doesn't feel good-natured yet.

I want to wrap early Caduceus in a blanket. He has so little experience in the world and his new friends just stole a pirate ship that he had to desperately swim to. He's a pirate in the ocean now and has no idea what's going on. All of his expectations have been thrown out the window and he's scrambling to figure out what he's supposed to be doing.

Jester fully embracing pirate life but very upset about Fjord and Avantika. Fjord having no clue what he's doing but hey if he has to seduce a pirate captain to find out about his sea serpent patron he will. His little accent slip waking up from a dream that I totally wrote off the first time.

Yasha just vibing. Her only concern is of her little found family and the storm lord's wishes and if that means becoming a pirate she's cool with that.

Okay not that I don’t believe in Bells Hells, but what do you think the other PCs will be doing when the Calamity 2 absolutely arrives?

My guess is that Vex and Percy are going to go full preppers on Whitestone and it’s going to remain one of the last standing cities remaining after the dust settles.

Poor Pike is going to be destroyed if something happens to Sarenrae, not to mention what will happen to her powers. Luckily Scanlan is probably gonna hide her and their children into his demiplane until it all blows over.

Scanlan offers Grog to join them in the demiplane but Grog is going to have the time of his life killing hordes of monsters and raiders during the apocalypse.

Keyleth goes out of retirement and leads the Ashari on the offensive. While Vax looses his shit as the Raven Queen forces him to fight yet another risen god, because not even in death is he getting a retirement.

The Mighty Nein reunite!… To cower in Esseks demiplane while the Calamity happens outside.

Caleb, Essek and Beau are hardcore angstying if they found out Ludinus is responsible.

Maybe Fjord, Jester and Kingsley don’t give a fuck and become Mad Max apocalypse pirates (after dealing with their families of course)

Artagan will spend the whole Calamity hiding in Jester’s dress fully pretending to be a weasel.

Caduceus just looks at the blood red sky and the moon hatching a lovecraftian monster and he’s like “oh no, that doesn’t look good... Not my problem tho, hope it blows over soon it’s stressing the trees😕”

Ok, this is getting under my skin and it's the silliest thing. So I'm gonna get out my thoughts. I see a lot of people freaked out by Kinsley's lack of tattoos. Others say he's covering them up it's fine. But we already knew they were gone???

When Lucien goes Neo in the final fight his figure doesn't have the tattoos, and in the Mighty Nein recap. Kingsley doesn't have the little feather on his face, and that's immediately after he's been resurrected. So he's not covering them. They're just gone.

Which I think is good!

Mollymauk got his tattoos to express himself and cover the eyes. Lucien hated Mollymauk's tattoos because they weren't him. Weren't made by him. Weren't his tastes. They hated the physical reminder of each other and given the first chance Lucien removed the tattoos. Just how Mollymauk covered the eyes.

Kingsley doesn't have the eyes and doesn't have the tattoos. Other than his blood hunter scars. Kingsley's in the unique situation of waking up with his body mostly unmarked by his past lives. No bright and painful reminder embedded into his skin of who he isn't. I like it. It feels like a clean start for the pirate captain who's just begun his life.

This clean slate, it's his, he can ink it and pierce it if wants. He doesn't have to if he doesn't. Nothing has been forced on him. It's fresh, it's his. Just like it should be.

Hey, for those who read the manga or watch the anime, has the Mighty Nein ever give off Strawhat Pirate vibes?

Both groups fall ass backward into liberating various communities; sometimes without meaning to. Both challenge gods or things that might as well be gods on the regular. Both fight for the freedom to live the lives they want to live despite various antagonists trying to force a different kind of life onto them. Both have members that are hesitant to start a fight individually, but both groups as a whole will travel to hell and back for one of their own. Both groups have done great deeds that the world doesn't know about.

And also, yes, because both were pirates. And because some members of Critical Role have lent their voices to the English dub. There might be more similarities I'm forgetting, but yeah.

To be fair though, I didn't realize how much One Piece reads like a 10 year+ D&D campaign until I starting watching table top streams and listening to podcasts for same.

In any case, it's going to be funny seeing the Mighty Nein being pirates and screaming about their nakama in the Japanese dub.

As a fan of many many d&d campaigns in my life, I've been super ecstatic that Vox Machina has gotten an animated show (and as of now, I know there are plans for a Mighty Nein show as well). Honestly watching these characters come to life through animation and the player's incredible voice acting has been awesome.

However JRWI (especially Riptide) has a special place in my heart as my #1 all time favorite d&d podcast, and though I doubt it will ever happen unless they somehow get way more popular, I've been thinking about scenes from Ripride that I think, personaly, would be insane to see animated as well. Okay but given how Tealeaf is referred to as some kind of mysterious cryptid in sources that document the rest of the Mighty Nein, I think it would be very fun if Kingsley accidentally became a local legend across the sea.

Maybe his infernal blood and blood hunter magic still spook superstitious sailors. Maybe the Mollymauk has a reputation as a ghost ship, given how many times Tealeaf has come back from the dead—if half the stories are to be believed—

Maybe someone saw just his glowing red eyes in the dark, or heard him singing songs from another life under the moonlight, and mistook him for a siren (and the magical charm of his Devil’s Tongue didn’t in the least dissuade them—)

No one sees it coming when the Sapphire runs House Truscan out of the Truscan Vale. It happens overnight: one day, Beau's father is counting taxes and rubbing shoulders with the region's richest, and the next he's in a panic because the only person left to run the country is some lowborn cousin he's snubbed his entire life.

"We are ruined," he insists. "We have no standing with the new leaders of the region. Our only chance to save the family is to go above the local's heads, straight to the Sapphire herself. We must send tribute."

On his word, a cart of valuables is loaded. Fine wines, silks and furs, gold chalices. A gift blatant enough to make even the most experienced of politicians take notice. And, to top it all off, a personal attendant in the form of Lord Lionett's own daughter.

Beau was woken from a dead sleep in the wee hours of the morning to a hand clamped roughly over her mouth. She fought with everything she had, but between the four burly men and the sedative her father had slipped into her dinner, she wasn't able to break free. They had to tie her like a common criminal before they could load her into the cart.

Her father came to see them off. "It's just good business, Beauregard," he explained to her, ignoring her snarls through the gag. "One day you will understand the opportunity I have given you. The personal attendant of the Sapphire is a highly sought position." Then, without another word, she was driven off to the home of the Sapphire.

Beau knew what happened to people that ended up in the Sapphire's control. They either turned up dead - like the Truscans - or they were never heard from again. Rumor had it that the Sapphire sent galley slaves to work in her secret pirate armada, which roamed the Lucidean Ocean. Maybe that wouldn't be so bad. Maybe she would be sent to do that, instead of being a personal attendant.

Everyone knew "personal attendant" was polite code for slave. It was a way for families to gain social standing with a king or ruler, by giving up one of their own like a sacrificial lamb. Often these poor lordlings ended up dead - or worse - by the hand of their masters.

No one knew what kind of woman the Sapphire was. Beau had heard that her court took place on the edge of a live volcano, and that if she didn't like what someone said, she would order them thrown into the lava below. They said that the Sapphire could wipe out a battlefield of men with a single swipe of her weapons, and that she giggled and laughed at bloodshed. The chances of her being a kind mistress were slim to none.

Beau was fucked.

hey morri! i’m kind of the reverse of you where i’ve seen all of c3 (all of it to date i suppose), but none of c2! i am enjoying the overlap the first two campaigns have had with the third, tho i definitely don’t have a ton of context to the second!

tell me more about why you love it so much! what sticks out to you about the style, defining moments, the characters? who’s your favourite if you can pick just one? why were you drawn to that campaign over the other two?

if i had to guess i think my fav pc would be caleb, im a huge fan of vax and orym. liams characters in general haha

HI ANON!!!!! I'm so glad you came back and gave me a chance to ramble about this silly little show that I love so much.

This is extremely long, so I'm putting it under the cut to spare people's dashes.

So, campaign two is very near and dear to my heart. It's the first campaign I watched (and the only one I've finished), and it's (in part) what got me into dnd in the first place.

I mean, it really is everything I could ever want from a dnd show. The characters are amazing, the plot is excellent, there's the right mix of shenanigans and sincerity. Okay, yes, all of crit role has those things, but c2 knocks it out of the park.

Like, c1 is a bit more of your typical hero's journey. You have these people who start out rather ordinary, and end up rising to extreme heights, saving the world and gaining a lot of power as they do so. These people are also (generally) pretty good and righteous people. Which isn't bad!!!!!!!! I love c1 a lot! (I would kill and die for Vax, which explains why I've been procrastinating finishing, lmao.)

But c2 is more my style when it comes to characters. A bunch of fucked-up misfits who become an extremely dysfunctional but loving family, and semi-accidentally save the world while they're at it. Idk, there's something about the fact that the Mighty Nein don't start out to be heroes, don't intend to be heroes, that really really endears me to them. A fair amount of what they do is for not necessarily self-serving, but personal reasons. They fuck up sometimes, and it's great.

Also, TMN are just so much more chaotic than Vox Machina. I mean, it's to be expected when you have such chaotic characters as Nott and Jester in one party, plus everyone else.

As for defining moments, there's literally too many to list. I could sit here and talk about c2 for hours. But I will say that near the end of Episode 7 was where I well and truly knew that there was no going back, and that my life had been changed. (A lot of good things there, but the Molly+Caleb bit is what did me in, I think.)

Other top faves include (in no particular order) literally the entire pirate arc (but esp the fight on the ship in Darktow and the yuan-ti temple), Yasha's pit fight (I literally wrote a mini essay about it on my personal blog bc it made me so emotional), any time Essek is there (for both feels and laughs), Caduceus's speech in Dinner With The Devil, Jester and Nott fucking up that one temple (just because it made me laugh so hard I stopped making noise for like 10 minutes straight), any time Beau and Caleb interact, THE FIRST TIME THEY SEE THE NEIN-SIDED TOWER, the Lucien/Jester tarot reading, the Lucien fight (all stages of it), Fjord throwing his sword into lava, any of the times they polymorphed large monsters into turtles (giant -> snapping turtle or the turtle on ice), the time they got banned from two libraries in less than 20 minutes...

As you can see, I could go on for hours. And yes, if you're a Liam character fan, Caleb will be your favorite. Caleb is also my favorite critical role character of all time ever, and I'm so obsessed with this man it's unreal. Like, autistic (to me) sad wizard man who loves his cat, has so much trauma, and is played by Liam O'Brien??? Obviously going to be my fave.

As for why I started with c2 over c1, I'm not actually sure. I think it was on the recommendation of some friends and my cousin, because the beginning is more polished than that of c1, and in their opinions it was the best campaign (I'm inclined to agree. No other crit role campaign will ever top it).

I have not watch tlovm yet, but I plan on getting around to it someday. Unfortunately for me, I am very very very very bad at finishing tv shows. It's basically either I finish it at an insanely fast pace (ie all 141 episodes of c2 in ~6 months, or all 38 episodes of Black Sails in just over 2 weeks), or I never finish it at all. Someday I will get my shit together and watch tlovm, though.

Actually, I happen to have a little art wall at my mom's house that is mostly Mighty Nein art. I don't have everyone yet, just Jester, Yasha, Caleb, and Essek, but I'd love to get the full party up there someday. Sadly I don't have any good pictures of it.

Does she sing herself Ladino lullabies? Does she observe in any way on her own? (Also that chai necklace burning up in hell — I have to know how the magic realism intersects with Jewishness). Something sweet with her friends or fellow Lethe people is cool too, maybe something to do with the artifacts in El Bastone. Cosmere - Brandon Sanderson Im thinking Mistborn might mesh best but honestly go wild. Stormlight is probably my favourite, Rysn and Chiri-Chiri, Navani and Raboniel, Shallan, the trans king from the walking island. Marasi and Steris my autistic blorbos. Maybe something weird with Kelsier. Critical Role (Web Series) Im thinking Jester and Nott and pastries and mischief. Im not super caught up on campaign 3 Im up to Bassuras, Ive seen most of two and a good bit of one and would prefer no major spoilers. There's no character that I really dont like (unless im supposed to dislike them TRENT IKITHON). “I hope you find someone to mourn you when you’re gone”. Woof.  Probably mighty nein are my favourite but I also have big feelings about Ashton and chronic pain, Percy, Vax, Vex, Kiki, Gilmore. Mollymauk. I hope this is useful information lol.
