Dean and Cas at the portal in Purgatory is like Orpheus and Eurydice.

If Dean kept going and didn't look back at Cas everything would've been fine. He wouldn't have noticed if Cas went through or not until after it already closed. He just had to trust Cas. But because Dean looked back and tried to pull Cas into the rapidly closing portal with him everything fell apart. Cas stayed behind and Dean lost him yet again to Purgatory with no way to get back.

(I am ignoring the fact that Cas purposefully stayed behind here.)

and they have no more use for him so dean just stabs him. even though he’s just one demon and he’s literally in a cage out of the way until they’re done

but they’ll be too tired to do an exorcism later so it’s okay
