These are the main characters for the story I'm currently writing:
Felix. 25 years old and German:
Tumblr media
Background:
He has a little sister named Lily, and she is 11 years old.
Since his dad (Walther: should have been 46) died 9 years ago Heidi (Felix's mom - 43 years old) has been even harsher on him. The only one who truly understands Felix is his dad's sister (Elise. 32 years old) who moved in with them when he died. She could see herself a bit in him, since she never was the favorite child and never got prioritated.
And when the war begins Heidi is happy because "they would so easily win over the others" and therefore gladly sent him to the war.
Nestor. 26 years old and French:
Tumblr media
Background:
He's the only child and therefore his parents (Chloe: 44 years old, and William 46 years old) have had higher expectations on him. And when the war begun, they were happy to have another reason to be proud of their son. So Nestor got anxious, but didn't tell his parents, in fear to disappoint them.

Not me beginning another WIP again just to deal with the stress 🤷
Instead of sleeping or (at least) working on my endless WIP's list...
So ... apparently I needed to write about Theseus' backstory. Probably because I watched "the last letter from your lover" tonight and too many of my HC related to Theseus and Leta's story. (Not literally but enough to preventing me from sleeping)

“I held you as Keats + Christ + Elijah + my Colonel + my father confessor + Amenophis IV in profile. What’s that mathematically?
In effect, it is this: that I love you, dispassionately, so much, so very much, dear fellow, that the blasting little smile you wear on reading this can’t hurt me in the least.
If you consider what the above Names have severally done for me, you will know what you are doing. And you have fixed my Life - however short. You did not light me: I was always a mad comet; but you have fixed me. I spun round you a satellite for a month, but I shall swing out soon, a dark star in the orbit where you will blaze.”
Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) to Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“W’s death was an unhealed wound and the ache of it has been with me ever since. I wanted him back - not his poetry.”
Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) on the death of Wilfred Owen (1893-1918)

Explore Iraq through the eyes of Gertrude Bell
Tumblr media
Letters from Baghdad, directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum, and voiced by Academy Award winning actor Tilda Swinton, tells the dramatic story of Gertrude Bell, a British spy, explorer and political powerhouse.
Gertrude Bell travelled widely in Arabia before being recruited by British military intelligence during WWI to help draw the borders of Iraq and shape the modern Middle East.
Using stunning, never-seen-before footage of the region, the film chronicles her extraordinary journey into the uncharted Arabian desert and the inner sanctum of British colonial power.
What makes Letters from Baghdad stand apart is that the story is told entirely in the words of Gertrude Bell and her contemporaries, excerpted from their intimate letters, private diaries and official documents.

If you're writing anything relating to more modern history a great place to start looking for sources and accounts is just to look through different archives. I've only been able to find ww1 letters to help my book writing because the UK's national archives have a lot of them in their data base.

Letters to Juliet & Romeo I (Thomas Shelby x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Heartbroken and in the midst of the Great War as a nurse, Y/N L/N writes to a person she never expected to write to before... her brother's friend, Thomas Shelby... But the war's over now and it is time to face the letters...
Warnings: wartime angst, talks of wartime violence, pre-Peaky Blinder Tommy, soldier Tommy
Italics: content of the letters
A/N: Inspired by the movie 'Letters to Juliet', also there is no real timeline of when Tommy goes into the tunnels in France
Tumblr media
January 1916, 2 Years into the Great War (WW1)
"L/N, you got a letter."
Looking up from the book she was reading, Y/N set it to the side as one of the soldiers came in, handing her a envelope that was a little dirty, had seen a little wear and tear but she recognized the hand writing on it.
She recognized his handwriting after months of writing to Tommy, Y/N remembered the first time she had written Tommy; it came after months of not hearing from her brother when he had left to France with the rest of the men in Small Heath. Y/N had made the decision to join in as a nurse with the Red Cross and maybe it was foolish, but she remembered the night before leaving on the train, when her nursing uniform was on her bed as the nerves were coursing through her that she grabbed a piece a paper and began to write.
Dear Thomas that letter began, she poured out everything about how Small Heath was, how she had signed up as a nurse and how she prayed she wouldn't find any of them in the camp hospital she was going to be. She had written how she barely had made the qualifications of being a nurse for the Red Cross with her just having turned 25 and such.
"Who keeps writing you, F/N?" one of her fellow nurses teased.
"Don't you know that's her boyfriend?" another responded.
"He's not my boyfriend", she denied, feeling a heat go through her.
"Sure he isn't."
The letters have begun as something innocent when Tommy had responded back to her first letter, she could sense the shock in his letter about her writing him but as the letters progressed, so did their relationship through their letters.
Opening the newest letter, Y/N felt a sense of anxiety in her as she remembered having had the courage to send Tommy a picture of her in her uniform; she remembered taking the picture once her training had been done, having donned the periwinkle, long-sleeve floor-length dress with the white apron that wrapped around her and went down to the ground. She had to tightly wrapped her back back into the white cap like habit.
A big red cross over the chest of her apron, she had sent the photo off with her letter and prayed that he didn't dislike it.
Reading the letter, she traced over his handwriting, feeling where he pressed hard on the paper as he wrote as she read how he found her to be beautiful in her photo.
You look even more beautiful than when I last saw you...
It made her heart clench as she saw how he wrote how he hid the photo in his service jacket from the others, that he didn't want them to see the lovely girl that kept writing him letters because he felt possessive over this same piece of heaven that was keeping him sane.
Y/N could picture Tommy in the trenches, covered in grime and dirt as he had to listen to the horrors of the wartime. She read how he longed for the war to be over, how he was fortunate enough to be with people that he knew, but he was terrified.
They're sending me to the underground soon. They want me and the others to be sappers, dig in the tunnels under No Man's Land
Y/N felt her heart drop at the prospect of Tommy going into the tunnels, having to dig with shovels under the handles broke and he would be forced to dig with his hands. She had seen some soldiers came in, having treated their hands for digging under the trenches and dealing with the explosives.
My only comfort is you, being able to bring the picture you sent me down in the ground where death might be waiting for me... the only thing that has gotten me through this damned war is you...
"Ladies, we got mass casualties coming in!" their head nurse shouted into the tent. "Look alive, ladies!"
Y/N tucked the newest letter into her pillowcase, knowing she was once again about to face the horrors of the war as she reminisced on Tommy's smile, she knew he smiled a lot.
But now, she had a feeling he didn't smile as much.
Tumblr media
Dear Thomas,
I'm sure you're curious as to why you received a letter from B/N's litter sister. Frankly, I'm a little shocked I'm writing to you, I've not heard from my brother no matter the amount of letters I've sent.
That was how the first letter started, Tommy sometimes would re-read the letter when he couldn't sleep amongst the noises of screaming soldiers and anxiety.
"Shelby, ya girl's sent another letter", one of his fellow soldiers said as he held out a envelope.
Tommy grabbed the envelope, none of his brothers were around as he opened the letter; he remembers the shy smiles Y/N would send him when he would see her as she visited her brother, the little nose wrinkle she got when she would laugh a loud, deep belly laugh (one that he knew others called unladylike, but that he remembered fondly).
He felt the smooth texture of a photo in the letter, pulling the picture to his eyes and he felt a sense of... love come over him as he saw the picture of her in her nursing ward uniform. A small smile on her full lips, the roundness of her cheeks that only made her look younger, he could see in her eyes the nerves of everything. The cap hid her hair from view and he wondered if she had cut it short like other nurses were forced to do because of sanitation and he was curious if she still smiled.
He hoped she did because the only time he smiled was when he got her letters...

I am the keeper of the family's ephemera, which is that my grandmother was a diligent scrapbooker who didn't take many photos but did keep every birthday card and play program, and the responsibility of creating a digital version of these items falls to me, the one with the most free time and surface knowledge of how items like these ought to be handled.
Similarly to when I spend a winter creating a better archive of my great grandmother's pre to post WW1 photos, I am always upset by the way that we teach American history as a history of war and not a history of people.
The photos from both generations of war are interesting to look at because they are pictures of a time. But that wasn't the story my grandma was trying to tell.
On the same page as a book of war ration stamps is a valentines day card from my grandpa. This is before he went off, when they were still in high school. Once he was drafted, its all long distance letters and post cards. And she wrote poems about the war, but she also wrote about sunrises.
Its easy to think of wartime as being all war all the time. But I think its important to know that life continued.

TW: Mentions of WW1(not very raunchy or much historically but still a precaution), implied sexual intercourse but no details, possibly unrealistic adaptation of Timmie :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanna shift for Timothée because he reminds me of old-fashioned love, especially because he has French background and I just know he's a lover boy. The type to struggle to keep his hands to himself, to feel helpless if he can't get to you, or even share a laugh with you.
Arguments shared between the two of you would be short and end in a peaceful resolution because he would be damned if he ever let you two go to bed angry at each other. He'd love you like he's known you for all his life.
You probably met him on set, whatever you'd work as. Something about you captivated him so much that he needed to talk to you. You'd probably hear about previous times that he has flirted with a female worker but it was different, he didn't touch you as he would with someone like Florence or wrap his arms around you, no. He wants to preserve you until you're truly his. You did distance yourself though, scared of getting your hopes up only to be met with a fabrication of a potential love between you two ripped to shreds but, you didn't see any of that. He knew what the headlines said about him and he just prayed you didn't see him that way. Eventually, you were "doomed" to succumb to his attempt and now you lie in bed every day with slender limbs bent around your waist.
And of course, nights would end with gentle yet passionate lovemaking until the early breaks of the morning sun. Giggles in the bathtub, conversation while taking care of his coiled hair, rubbing pink Vaseline on his cracked lips (of course sneaking a sweet kiss)
I imagine him as a baker, or something like that receiving news of his mandatory service for WW1. He couldn't bear to leave you at home with your newborn and he expressed this through lengthy letters sent to your estate. He sent anything he could, lace from his boots, a leather bag he picked up, or stale bread that he had taken a bite of stating that he wanted to share at least one meal with you while apart.

Gen's Top 100 DBDA Fics - PART 6
For all caveats/rules/backstory, please read the Master Post
Lemonade & Sunrises By: paraph @paraphwrites Rating: M Tags: AU - A Quiet Place, Angst, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort Summary: Set in "The Quiet Place" universe. Edwin and Charles navigate their time through New York City through the first year of the invasion. * No prior lore for either fandom required to enjoy! My Notes: This one is truly a work of art with its prose and story composition. I have never seen The Quiet Place, but damn did this fic make me want to.
Letters addressed to the fire By: zmorak @zmorak Rating: T Tags: AU - WW1, Hurt No Comfort, Diary/Journal, Angst, Slow Burn Summary: Diary excerpts of Lance Corporal Edwin Nicholas Payne (1900-1989), British Foreign Correspondent, Journalist, and Poet, dated between August 15th and November 1st, 1916, Somme. *** You, Charles, may be the best man and the kindest soul I have ever had the luck to meet. I will not delude myself so much as to think that we will see each other in old age, but I do dearly hope that in the years to come, we will meet again; with both of us standing on our own two feet, we'll share a bottle of scotch, and reminisce with grief-ridden fondness about this inferno that brought us together. My Notes: This fic made me cry, and not many fics do that. The day I first recommended this in the server everyone reported back that they cried. It was a very memorable day lol. Really a beautiful piece of work. I love historical fiction and the quality of the prose is truly spectacular.
Loud Bark, Deep Bite By: hyperiion Rating: M Tags: Case Fic, Fluff and Angst, First Kiss, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Charles didn’t mind being underestimated. When he told people he was the brawn of the detective duo, they usually gave a small, placating smile. Charles would take a hundred of those moments for just one of these: when the demon, ghoul, or witch of the week gave him an appraising glance and found him wanting, only to find that ghost-strength is so much more than appearances. A year after the events in Port Townsend, the Dead Boy (and One Psychic Girl) Detective Agency has fallen into a rhythm with cases. A mage kidnapping ghosts upends their rhythm, and with it, Charles' bottled-up feelings. My Notes: Ghost soup! In this case fic, the crew faces a mage kidnapping ghosts! I particularly like the final confrontation because Charles gets to be all heroic.
Nothing Left to Hide By: RoseGanymede95 @oxbellows Rating: NR Tags: Hell Aftermath, Arachnophobia, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: “You’re-” Charles has to stop before any more words can come through, because another round of sobbing overtakes him, forcefully enough Edwin thinks a living boy might break his ribs like this. “You’re. Scared.” Charles tries again, and the words sound like they’re being punched out of him, each one a broken, jagged thing, “Of. Spiders." Grief crashes down on Edwin like a physical weight. This is about Hell. My Notes: Charles having a breakdown over Edwin's fear of spiders is not something I knew I needed, but it is spectacular.
Of a youth who loves me By: Aliquis @riceinthechurch Rating: T Tags: Friends to Lovers, Codependency, Protective Charles Rowland, First Kiss, Religious Guilt Summary: The boy Charles rescued from Hell, so frail without his waistcoat and ridiculous britches, had been nearly unrecognizable as his best friend. Charles would do anything, compromise any dignity, to make sure Edwin never has to return to the pit. He just has to figure out how. My Notes: Charles loves Edwin so much that he tries to make a deal with a demon to sacrifice himself instead and it is just so in character (and dumb) of him. I love Edwin being super pissed about it too because that is also perfectly in character!
Overloaded By: babyseraphim @babyseraphim Rating: T Tags: Chronic Pain, Hurt/Comfort, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Before Edwin had been strapped to Esther’s torture table and very rudely used as a magical battery, he had been under the impression that the use of iron was the only way to inflict pain upon ghosts in the mortal realm. However, because he was Edwin Payne and the universe seemed intent on making him pay for his ridiculously on-the-nose surname for all of eternity, those rules apparently did not apply to him. My Notes: Edwin dealing with long term pain after Esther's torture table is not something I had even considered until I read this fic and let me tell you the concept has stuck with me. Especially since (spoilers) the pain doesn't go away. This is something that Edwin has to just deal with. The way that Charles assures Edwin that he isn't a bother and that they will stick together through this is heart warming
Promises & Voids By: NuriaSchnee @nuria-schnee Rating: M Tags: Romance, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Sickfic, Temporary Character Death, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Edwin gets hit with a "death" curse, which eats his soul away until he disappears completely. With no way to stop it or break it, Edwin spends his last hours with Charles, and makes him promise that he will continue their work in the agency without him. My Notes: You want to cry? Here's a fic for you. It does have a happy ending to make up for it, but DAMN that first chapter broke my heart. Charles holding onto a fading Edwin until he disappears is just HEARTBREAKING!
remind me that i am a fool By: blladnna Rating: G Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Protective Charles Rowland, Hurt Edwin Payne Summary: When Charles saw the boy curled up at the end of the hallway, his first thought was that it couldn’t possibly be his best mate. The figure had none of Edwin’s prim and proper urgency, lacked his drive, his grace. Whoever the boy at the end of the hallway was, his spirit had been truly and thoroughly broken. As he approached, Charles saw that he was wrong—that boy was Edwin, just not any version of him Charles had ever seen. “Please go away, Charles," Edwin said. "You’re being cruel.” or When Edwin goes back to Hell, instead of being torn apart on loop, he suffers through the only pain worse. Watching it happen to Charles. My Notes: I really love fics that make Hell worse and this one fits the bill. Charles trying to convince Edwin that he is *real* this time is just so good.
right. never finished it. By: taableclofh Rating: M Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Orpheus and Eurydice Summary: Charles never knew what the ending to Orpheus and Eurydice’s story was. Never bothered to finish it. Never felt the need to, did he? All he knows is that he cannot exist in a world where Edwin is not there beside him. My Notes: Getting out of hell is a lot harder in this fic. Edwin not remembering anything between his different reincarnations after his various deaths leads to some interesting development for Charles as we get to see him change while Edwin stays the same.
The Case of the Broken Orb By: JJ_Queenie Rating: NR Tags: Love Confessions, Inebriated Edwin, Protective Charles Rowland, Dreamsharing, Hurt/Comfort, Drunken Shenanigans, Drunken Confessions Summary: Edwin breaks an orb that shows a person's greatest dream/desire and absorbs its powers, so now whenever someone touches him he sees their greatest dreams. Unfortunately the dream energy is also making him incredibly loopy and he is doing things and spouting out things he never normally would. His friends try to scramble to find a cure while also making sure Edwin doesn't get into too much trouble, soon finding that an inebriated Edwin is a lot harder to contain than they initially expected. My Notes: Usually, I don't go for humorous fics, but this one is HILARIOUS! Edwin without any inhibitions is a sight to behold! But this fic is not only funny, it's really heartfelt <3

Anticipated New Releases of 2024
**As anticipated by Me. Mostly SFF. Links are to goodreads because that's what I use, sorry. Anything marked "new to me" I haven't read anything by that author before and therefore can't vouch for the quality. I just think the premise is neat.**
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands, Heather Fawcett (16 January)
Sequel to the charming novel about the fairy anthropologist.
Exordia, Seth Dickinson (23 January)
Well, it isn't a new Baru Cormorant, but this modern SF about first contact may be the next best thing.
City of Stardust, Georgia Summers (30 January)
New to me. A young woman descends into the underworld in order to break her family's fatal curse.
The Tainted Cup, Robert Jackson Bennett (6 February)
New to me. A sherlock holmes flavored duo solves the mystery of the murder of an imperial official in a labyrinthine fantasy realm.
What Feasts at Night, T Kingfisher (13 February)
The sequel to the mushroom horror book What Moves the Dead.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts, Katherine Arden (13 February)
A ghost story set in WW1 about a woman searching for her missing brother.

Sunbringer, Hannah Kaner (12 March)

Jumpnauts, Hao Jingfang (12 March)
New to me. A SF novel in translation from Chinese, with three scientists joining forces to deal peacefully with a first contact situation.
The Woods All Black, Lee Mandelo (19 March)
I liked Mandelo's debut novel very much so I'm excited to read this queer horror novella set in 1920s Appalachia.
Floating Hotel, Grace Curtis (19 March)
New to me. A series of cozy character vignettes on a space cruise ship after a murder has occurred. One of the four (!) space hotel murder crimes books coming out this year.
The Emperor and the Endless Palace, Justinian Huang (26 March)
New to me. Reincarnation gay romance set in 4 BCE China, the 1740s, and modern-day LA.
Alien Clay, Adrian Tchaikovsky (28 March)
Far future space xenoarchaeology by a man trapped on a prison planet.
Someone You Can Build a Nest In, John Wiswell (2 April)
New to me. Bizarre lesbian cannibalism monster romance from the point of view of the monster.
The Familiar, Leigh Bardugo (9 April)
Glad to see Bardugo writing more adult fantasy, and this one is especially exciting because it's a fantasy set in early modern Spain with a Jewish main character. Fun to see a more original historical period.
A Sweet Sting of Salt, Rose Sutherland (9 April)
New to me. Lesbian selkie romance.
Death in the Spires, KJ Charles (11 April)
Charles branching out from romance into historical Oxford murder mystery about a group of friends with dark secrets.
Audrey Lane Stirs The Pot, Alexis Hall (22 April)
The new Hall thinly veiled british baking show romcom. Libby says it's releasing in April but I've heard nothing from the author so I think it may be Alecto'd (shifted to next year)

Sequel to the dungeons and dragons-esque low fantasy lesbian necromancy book.
A Letter to the Luminous Deep, Sylvie Cathrall (25 April)
New to me. Sweet underwater epistolary academic romance.
How To Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, Django Wexler (21 May)
New to me. A young hero caught in a fantasy time loop gives up and tries being the villain in an attempt to escape.
Goddess of the River, Vaishnavi Patel (21 May)
Another woman-centered retelling of Hindu mythology, this time based on the river goddess Ganga.
Escape Velocity, Victor Manibo (21 May)
New to me. Evil and toxic private school alumni jockey for position in a space hotel event in an attempt to escape a dying Earth.
The Fireborne Blade, Charlotte Bond (28 May)
New to me. Gay dragon slaying knight novella.
Evocation, ST Gibson (28 May)
New to me but looks very cool. Attorney and medium David attempts to escape his deal with the devil with the help of his ex boyfriend and his ex boyfriend's wife (Poly romance).
Service Model, Adrian Tchaikovsky (4 June)
In an SF future, a robot kills its human owners and ventures out into a world where human supremacy is beginning to crumble.
Lady Eve's Last Con, Rebecca Fraimow (4 June)
New to me. A con artist seeks revenge on the man who hurt her sister, who's coincidentally also on a space cruise ship (Sapphic romance subplot).
Triple Sec, TJ Alexander (4 June)
An actual mainstream published poly romance (!!) by trans author Alexander.
Running Close to the Wind, Alexandra Rowland (11 June)
Gay! Pirates! Scheming! Alt fantasy world! Monks! I liked Taste of Gold and Iron a lot and I'm very excited for this one.
The Knife and the Serpent, Tim Pratt (11 June)
New to me. Space opera about an interdimensional organization. Also, there's a sentient starship.
The Witchstone, Henry Neff (18 June)
A childhood favorite of mine's adult debut, featuring a demon who suddenly has to shape up at his curse keeper job after eight hundred years of slacking.

VERY excited to read more weird queer sff from this author after a fantastic debut. Looks weird. I'm in.

New to me. A witch in a Slavic fantasy inspired world flees her evil ex, the Tsar of Monsters. There's also a plague and a detective.
Saints of Storm and Sorrow, Gabriella Buba (25 June)
New to me. Filipino inspired anticolonialist fantasy novel about a nun who is secretly practicing the religion of her goddess.

Buckle up, bitch. Let's analyze
Tumblr media
So.
The date: Today's the 11th of November, the day of peace after WW1 (or however it's called in English). The only time (as far as I know) MCR has alluded to WW1 specifically is The Ghost of You music video, with the guys being the bloody first. They alluded to war in general many other times though.
Caption: this initially reminded me of the line from The End. "when I grow up I want to be nothing at all", but that's just the vibes.
Letters: new logo? Maybe. But it doesn't say MCR, but KCR. You know what has K in it? Paper Kingdom. So, since The Witch has been leaked in full this year, and Wake Up! and Dark Cloud had some snippets leaked, could this be A proper Paper Kingdom release?? Mostly wishful thinking
Background: The city reminds me of New York City. Knowing Gerard and his history with 9/11, it wouldn't surprise me that this is related to it. This could also be the non-ruined background of the Swarm Tour background. Kinda looks like the city in the background of The Black Parade promo art. In the topic of The Black Parade, the confetti reminds me of the confetti from the WTTBP music video, along with the overwhelming white color of the post. It wouldn't make much sense for it to be related to The Black Parade, though. The 18th anniversary was back in September, we already have a full rerecording+demos album (Living With Ghosts). WWWYF was three weeks ago, so it also makes no sense for them to post something about it, especially whilst being this cryptic.
This means one thing.
MCR5 IS FUCKING COMING
I told y'all. I FUCKING TOLD Y'ALL.

forget-me-nots, 05.
Tumblr media
hi y/n,
i've been telling my mom about our letters, she seems to look forward to your responses as much as i do! today she went grocery shopping and there happened to be a really big sale on flower seeds. i'm not actually sure what kinds of flowers she bought, but she bought a lot for you. she wants to meet you someday! my little brother does too. if there's ever a time you can or want to, please come over for dinner! the seed packets should be in the envelope. i hope you're able to make some use of them!
speaking of seeds, i had some poppyseed muffins for breakfast this morning. i remember you mentioning liking muffins. my little brother has really been into baking (not so much cooking). he made a lot so ill bring you a small basket on monday, hopefully you'll be able to share with some of the gardening club members. if you'd like, i can bring you whatever my brother ends up baking, he always makes big bunches.
i've also been meaning to tell you that my coach wants to talk to you. he's that one sketchy looking guy that works at the convenience store near our school (don't tell him i said that). he's been asking about the flowers you arranged for kiyoko and wants to order some as well. if you can, please come by during practice when you're not busy!
take care, sugawara
Tumblr media
about the flowers!
➤ poppies: i wasn't originally gonna do one of these, but i mentioned poppyseeds so i thought that i might as well! poppies overall have a lot of war symbolism. though they also hold meaning to things like death and sleep and peace. red, white, and black poppies especially tend to represent the fallen soldiers from past war efforts, most notably ww1. i found that purple poppies actually represent the fallen and hurt animals from war (which was really sad to learn!!). BUT!!! poppies aren't all about death and war. colors like pink can symbolize platonic love and sympathy while orange symbolizes good health and regeneration!

I'm literally sobbing;
it's time to talk about the game backgrounds.
You've done an exquisite job creating the game's atmosphere. Until recently, I couldn't quite grasp the indescribable feeling they evoked in me until I stumbled upon an illustration on Tumblr. In it, Tilda stands on the shore, gazing into the watery distance. The moment I saw this image, my heart skipped a few beats, and it has not let go of me, leading me to the state I find myself in as I write this letter.
My hometown is a city built along a river, devoid of tourists and featuring quiet stretches of sand on small beaches tucked away among slopes and tall shrubs. From my earliest childhood, I remember the river, which, in any season, maintained its grandeur—a broad waterline that at some point broke the line of the opposite shore, transitioning into the sea, practically merging with the sky.
For two years now, we've been at war; the shores are mined. In all this time, two people have lost their lives, and we're even asked to walk dogs near our yards. This place pulls and beckons, and sometimes, standing on the slope of the hill, I look down at the river, as if it still means everything, causing an inexplicable longing.
I don't know the context of the illustration, but how it imprinted in my memory helped me understand my feelings towards the atmosphere of your game. It so closely resembles my home, that lost place from better times.
Now, as I go through the demo version with friends, I occasionally point to the screen, saying that it looks like my hometown, and it becomes very cozy. I don't know if in the next ten or twenty years I'll be able to descend to my native shore without holding my breath in blind danger, but I do know that I have a wonderful substitute in your game.
I will faithfully await the release of the full game; thank you very much for this work—you're an inspiring person. Thanks again.
Thank you so, so much for writing this. The idea of my game being with you and even helping in some small way means so very much to me. I think I'll return to read this again very often.
I'll talk a bit about the context of the image below, so I guess if someone doesn't want to know, they should stop reading now!
**** SPOILERS BELOW ****
The game is set just after WW1 and the 1918–1920 flu pandemic. Both of Tilda's parents have died, and she is walking alone on the beach and thinking about that.
What she doesn't know is that Holmes and Watson are watching her from the clifftop, and considering how both they, and Tilda's extended family, care for her will always look after her.
Tumblr media
I never know as a writer whether I should talk about the subtext of my own work, especially when it's a game that hasn't even been released yet. It might be that none of this really comes through in the final game, I don't know!
But I think it was initially a product of me processing the Covid-19 pandemic, and the reprehensible way politicians and policy makers and leaders acted, and the fact that people died, and the fact that we're all supposed to carry on our day to day lives as if that's ok now?
I say the game is set in 1920, but it's not really - it's set in a little universe set apart from ours. The characters in the game have all been affected by war and disease (and are still being affected by those things - and always will be affected by those things), and I've given them a space which is gentle to them as they look towards creating a better future.
