prologue: who prays for sinners?

Prayers were the ultimate form of wishing. That was what your parents had always told you. If you want something, you should pray for it. If you need it, let your prayers be the vessel that guided you towards it. Let the gentle voice of God and his many angels be your saving grace that delivered you from evil and kept temptation away.

I’ll pray for you. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

But who prays for sinners?

Certainly not your parents, or your friends, or your teachers, or anyone you knew of. Congregation members in your church said blasphemous people belonged in hell. That we needn’t pray for someone who was so wicked in their ways. They believed that sin was a plague that they had to distance themselves from—cleanse their homes of it, avoid the touch and whisper of it—be as far away as possible. You thought it was fair treatment at first, thought that they should’ve seen it coming.

Until your parents did the same to you.

Sinner, they called you. Ungrateful. Child of evil. Unworthy of love or salvation. Left you at the steps of the church’s boarding school, without explanation as to what you had done wrong. But it’s not like you would have understood anyways. Maybe the whole sinner excuse wasn’t real, maybe they just didn’t loved you in the first place and were just looking for some excuse.

You could pray all you want. By the side of your bed, before meals, on the steps of the church’s altar—knees sore and bruised—it wouldn’t change a thing. Other forms of wishing; you could write about it, turn it into all the poetry you wanted, into a story to tell your friends, but it didn’t change a thing. All the wishing, writing, and praying did nothing. It couldn’t bring your parents back, and it sure as hell couldn’t make them love you again.

So there was nobody left to pray for you, sinner.

Except of course, Sugawara Koushi.

i learned today that i’m not so much of a baker nor a cook. tell your brother i said thank you for the recipe, but i think it’s better if i stick to just eating cakes instead of baking them!! also, yes! i’ll be staying with my grandmother over the entire summer break. that said, i don’t want to stop exchanging letters with you during the break. that’s like, a month and a half of no contact! would it be weird if i sent you my grandmother’s address? don’t go spreading it with your teammates! that’s a joke. i doubt you would do such a thing haha. her address should be on sticky note inside the envelope. i’ll make sure to keep writing to you, please don’t hesitate to send me letters over the break too!

Nishinoya: If Nishinoya had a crush on you, he'd be completely delusional about it, and to make matters worse, Tanaka would only encourage him. Did you ask him what day it was in class? Yep, according to him, you're head over heels but too shy to admit it.

One week before your third and final year of high school, you realize that you’ll soon be experiencing multiple “lasts” before a new chapter of your life begins.

Now, you don't normally care about these things, but you can’t help it when Koushi calls you that evening.

Apparently, he made an impulsive decision to go on a walk, and he now wants your company.

You groan at him through the phone and he laughs. Of course, he knows there’s no real anger behind it. He’s the only person in the world you would drop everything for without a second thought.

“I’m sor-” he tries, but you hang up on him, cutting off his “apology.” Huffing with amusement, you rummage through your closet for something that would keep you warm.

After pulling on a sweater, you let your parents know you’re heading out. They barely glance up from the television before nodding in acknowledgment. It’s been years since they decided that hangouts with your best friend no longer warrant further questions.

The cold wind greets you as you step outside. You shiver a little, but you slowly adjust to the temperature as you wait for Koushi. 

After a few minutes, you hear the sound of footsteps against the pavement. They stop right outside your gate, and you can see the telltale tuft of gray hair peeking out from behind.

“Koushi.” You greet him with an air of nonchalance as you open the gate. 

Your tone has always been a little flat—an unintentional habit of yours. You don’t have it in you to amp up the energy like everyone else does, but your friend has never minded it, even when he is the very definition of sunshine and chaos.

“Heh,” he chuckles sheepishly. “Hope you weren’t too busy.”

You half-heartedly glare at him, which makes him ruffle your hair. In response, you swat his hand away and try to smooth down the mess he’s made.

“You’re just lucky I was bored out of my mind,” you mutter, stepping out onto the sidewalk, and letting the gate shut behind you.

“This is the hundredth time I’ve been lucky.” He raises an eyebrow. “Maybe you do like me after all,” he teases.

Your stomach does a flip. 

Is he onto me?

“Sh-shut up!” You stammer, elbowing him in the side. 

“Ow!” He yelps, clutching at his ribs as if you’ve stabbed him. “Hey, I’ve got volleyball practice soon, don’t give me an injury.”

“You’ll be fine.” You roll your eyes at his theatrics, watching as he rubs his side in an attempt to soothe the pain. As he pouts and mumbles something under his breath, you brave a quick look at him.

He’s wearing that adorable blue scarf again—well, it’s yours, actually. You lent it to him in first year when he forgot his scarf on a chilly evening. For some reason, you insisted that he keep it, and now he wears it all the time with no fail. 

(His reasoning? “Maybe you’ll miss your blue scarf, so I’m just going to wear it every time we walk together.”

You remember staring at him in disbelief, but internally, you were maybe five seconds away from passing out.)

“Agh. Gosh, why didn’t you go for martial arts or something,” Koushi’s voice snaps you out of your reverie.

“I don’t have that kind of energy.” You raise an eyebrow at him. “Besides, I’m sure you wouldn’t want my punches to hurt even more.”

“Fair point,” he concedes with a laugh.

The two of you lapse into a comfortable silence, making the sound of leaves rustling much louder. When you glance at Koushi, his expression has shifted. He looks thoughtful, his gaze fixed ahead but distant, as though he’s turning something over in his mind.

“Why’d you call me out here?” You ask.

“Hm? It’s just…” Koushi hesitates for a moment, his voice softening. “We’re almost done with high school.”

The reality of his words hit you. “We are. But hey, I’m a year closer to my librarian dreams.”

“Ha. You’ve never really changed your mind, huh?”

“Nope.” You shake your head, popping the ‘p’ sound. “How about you, still wanna be a teacher?”

“Yeah.” He nods. “Dead set on it now, actually.”

“Good,” you say firmly. “You better keep your promise to apply to the same school. Don’t leave me to fend for myself in college or at work.”

“You’re not going to die, gosh,” Koushi laughs, shaking his head. “What are you going to do when strangers come up to you in the library to ask about different things?”

“That’s a problem for future me.” You scrunch your nose. Unfortunately, no job is exactly the way you want it to be.

“We’ll cross the bridge when we get there. But now, there’s one more year ahead of us,” he sighs.

“Yeah.” You tilt your head, brows furrowing slightly. “Is there something wrong?”

“Not really…” He trails off. “I just…I’ve been thinking a lot about how these months will be full of last chances.”

Last chances?

“I guess I couldn’t help but worry about how I need to make every moment count. I don’t want to waste opportunities.”

Oh.

Koushi stops walking for a moment and turns to you. “Am I making any sense?”

You study his expression. The faint lines of uncertainty on his face say enough. “You are. What brought this on?”

“It’s the volleyball team.” He confesses, his gaze flickering downward as he stuffs his hands in his pockets. “I still want to stay. I still want to go to Nationals. I know that we may not be the best in the prefecture, but…it’s not stupid to hope, right?”

For a few seconds, you think about it. You’re no stranger to hoping for good things, even when it seems impossible. 

You spent your childhood hoping for a best friend, even though most kids never wanted to approach you. Yet, here you are, years later. 

(Now, you’re just holding onto the hope that your feelings for him will be returned.)

“No, Koushi. It’s not stupid,” you reply, despite the subtle ache in your chest.

“Thanks.” His eyes brighten at your response, and you can’t help but let a small grin form on your face.

That’s my dreamer.

You recall how painful it was to see him realize that Karasuno was no longer the powerhouse he imagined. But, the fact that he hasn’t thought of giving up once is a testament to his true strength.

“Well, I just hope we’re lucky enough to get some more first-years.” A puff of steam leaves his mouth. “And I hope Asahi and Nishinoya come back as soon as possible.”

His voice falters slightly at the mention of his teammates. You instinctively reach out to take his hand in quiet support. That incident had upset him more than he let on.

“But no matter what happens, I’ll work hard,” he continues with conviction. “I want to finish this year with no regrets.”

“No regrets,” you echo his words in affirmation. Your heart hammers in your chest.

Should I do it?

“Hey, are you okay?”

What if this is my last chance?

“You’ve been staring for a while.”

What if someone else takes this moment from me?

“Hey.”

“You’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

No regrets.

“Koushi?”

“Oh, there! Thank goodness. What happened?” His voice sharpens in concern.

You close your eyes, willing yourself not to chicken out.

He blinks at you, taken aback by your cryptic behavior. “Um, yes, that’s what I said.”

“I wanna do that too,” you admit with a steady tone.

“That’s…good?” he replies, but the confusion turns his statement into a question.

“So, to start the year off strong…” You let go of your grip on his hands and take a step forward, closing the gap between the two of you.

“Koushi.” You look away momentarily, trying to find the words. “I don’t know when I started feeling this way, but…” 

You force yourself to meet his gaze, and you reach a hand out to tug on his scarf, bringing him closer to you.

Your faces are mere inches apart now; you can feel his warm breath on your face. The fact that he doesn’t protest or pull away gives you the confidence to continue.

“I like you,” you whisper. “Can I kiss you?”

As soon as the words leave your mouth, his lips crash into yours. You’re frozen, stunned by the fact that Koushi reciprocated. 

This is actually happening.

He’s kissing me.

One of his hands finds its way to the base of your neck, while the other wraps securely around your waist. His touch is gentle but grounding. It’s almost like he’s afraid to let you go.

You can’t take it anymore. 

The longing you’ve kept bottled inside for years finally explodes.

Releasing your grip on his scarf, you move your hands to the base of his neck instead, pulling him down a bit more. The height difference sends a quiet thrill through your body, leaving you giddy.

You part for a moment to gasp for air, but your lips find each other again. They seem to slot together perfectly, you think, as though you were made for each other.

You sigh at the feeling of shared warmth between your bodies, a stark contrast to the nighttime climate. Carding your fingers through his soft hair, you think about how much you’ve dreamed of spending the rest of your life with him.

No one understands you the way Koushi does. No one gets you like he does. Even when people questioned your friendship dynamics, you both found ways to defy the odds. The realization nearly makes you cry in the middle of this romantic moment, but there’s no way you’re letting Koushi use that against you.

As much as you want this kiss to stretch into eternity, your lungs are starting to burn. Reluctantly, you pull away once more, but this time, your chest is filled with something like peace and contentment.

Koushi rests his forehead against yours as you both catch your breath. He giggles with pure joy. “So, no regrets? I totally don’t have any.”

There may be last chances, but also hopeful beginnings.

“Yeah, me too. No regrets.”

She's already out of breath by the time she nears a fence, running so hard her lungs may as well cave in. She makes quick work of jumping it, hooking her fingers in the chain link and forcing herself up despite her body wanting to give up. 

If she stops, she gets arrested. And being arrested means losing her job. 

It's cushy, nice, but not as much pay as she'd like it to be. Although, she doesn't think of it as work most days; more often than not she loses herself within the motions, finds herself deep within a project or something of the sort. Most days, she comes home dead tired, but content. Then finds herself going back out in the middle of the night, the witching hour, to abandoned buildings or run down billboards. 

She teaches intermediate and advanced art, and art history at the high school down the road. Not even a five minute walk from her apartment. But in the dead of night, when everyone sleeps, she's a vandal - of sorts. 

“UZ eludes police again.” 

“Controversial mural downtown is spectacled to be from the vandal UZ.” 

“Who is UZ?”

Art was never a stranger to her. 

She teaches it. She lives it. She might very well get arrested for it one day. 

But she finds solace in the spray paint and secrecy. A version of herself she's more confident in, where she's allowed to be herself - express feelings she would normally leave unsaid. There's something comforting about anonymity, to hide behind the facade that was ‘UZ.’ 

But she can't hide behind shit if she's caught. So she runs for her life, for her dignity, for her sanity and well being. 

She doesn't stop until she knows she's lost the police, until she doesn't hear the hurried footsteps behind her. And she slinks into an alley with her chest on fire, and thanks a higher power she's able to go to work tomorrow.

Hinata Shoyo is definitely the type to sing more loudly than you and even jump inside the shower, causing water the splash and splatter, then encourages you to jump as well, and when you do and he sees your breasts bounce, he suddenly freezes and goes all red, overwhelmed and all fidgety. You definitely laugh at that, and when you tell him to continue singing he's still standing there frozen, with his mouth agape and his dick hard.

Sugawara Koushi is definitely the type to be very supportive and into your acapella, thus he hands you his shampoo bottle to act as your mic, then grabs your shampoo bottle to act as his mic. He is also definitely beat boxing to your song, singing in turns with you with the lyrics and at the end, clapping for the two of you's performance and hugging you while laughing about the whole thing. Tsukishima Kei is definitely the type to judge you first before eventually singin along. And by eventually, it took hime about 1 week to give in to your silly acapella concerts, but you managed to get him to groove along, it for sure and certain took you a lot of energy, because the first time you did that, all he did was stare at you with that bitchy look in his eyes. But you didn't give up! You were determined to make your boyfriend more livelier, so every time he showers, you immediately invade his time alone and shower with him, because you know he loves it. You sing when you shampoo his hair, when you scrubs your back and you scrub his, and when you even just relax in the bathtub. And all the while you were doing that, he smiled. You didn't notice it though, because he only smiled ever so wodely when you had your back turned to him, or your eyes in a different direction, but you knew. You knew because just like your mutual love, you knew Tsukishima.

Wakatoshi Ushijima likes calming songs, and so do you. So whenever you're in the shower with him, instead of singing loud and mainstream pop songs, you sing songs from artists like wave to earth, bruno major, TV girl and many others that you both share interest in. It's adorable you think, because you've created your own little way of life with him. Simple things like relaxing baths and showers with your sweet voice and him humming along with you is enough to make your day wonderful. He also most definitely rests his body on you, with his back on your chest as the two of you sit on the bath tub, and your combing his hair while softly humming his favorite song. It is most definitely one of his favourite ways to relax after a tough match.

I definitely see him that when he first saw you, he would be like in awe and so flustered. But after he gets over that stage, he would be such a sweetheart to you. Literally just showering you with compliments and subtly hinting his small crush. And overall just so sweet.

Kageyama

He’s already a bit socially awkward, imagine him with a CRUSH? His brain will be having a BIG ASS ERROR. Like he would stop functioning and wouldn’t be able to form a proper sentence. He would definitely not be the way to start a conversation so you have to be the one to start the convo.

When he realizes his feelings, he would just be like 😐 fuck feelings. He just so clueless what to do or how to make a move, so do you know he does instead, he teases you and makes stupid remarks. yup. Honestly, though I can imagine him like being a tad bit meaner than others cause he doesn’t know what else to do, but he definitely knows when he’s gone too far.

Yamaguchi

OK, so the first time meeting you he would definitely be a shy boy, but after processing would be just so sweet and kind. He wouldn’t be like overboard. He drop small compliments and cherish things, and just generally be so nice and sweet.

Tanaka + Nishinoya

I can definitely imagine these two having a crush and acting the same or similar. But they would definitely complement you a lot they would offer to help with stuff. And basically anything you do they like crazy like they adore you.

Daichi 

Out of all the karasuno members he would act the most mature about it. Like once he realizes feelings, he would definitely try to make small talk. Every chance he gets to. He would always like helping you and be like friends. He would definitely give small hints of his feelings and is definitely able to hold a decent conversation without being flustered and stuff.

Sugawara

I feel like he would be similar to Daichi. He would be like so caring and he would try talking to you, but I feel like he’s more like tries to give you stuff with kindness to charm you. He would definitely be more like embarrassed or flustered around you, but is still able to hold a conversation well.

Asahi

It would take him so long until he can talk to you. I mean he can barely even do a volleyball game without freaking out. Imagine a crush?? I feel like you would have to be the one to approach him because he would have a panic attack. But if he is able to talk to you, he would just give subtle compliments and be really sweet. you would definitely have to be the one to make a move though.

i've been telling my mom about our letters, she seems to look forward to your responses as much as i do! today she went grocery shopping and there happened to be a really big sale on flower seeds. i'm not actually sure what kinds of flowers she bought, but she bought a lot for you. she wants to meet you someday! my little brother does too. if there's ever a time you can or want to, please come over for dinner! the seed packets should be in the envelope. i hope you're able to make some use of them!

speaking of seeds, i had some poppyseed muffins for breakfast this morning. i remember you mentioning liking muffins. my little brother has really been into baking (not so much cooking). he made a lot so ill bring you a small basket on monday, hopefully you'll be able to share with some of the gardening club members. if you'd like, i can bring you whatever my brother ends up baking, he always makes big bunches.

➤ poppies: i wasn't originally gonna do one of these, but i mentioned poppyseeds so i thought that i might as well! poppies overall have a lot of war symbolism. though they also hold meaning to things like death and sleep and peace. red, white, and black poppies especially tend to represent the fallen soldiers from past war efforts, most notably ww1. i found that purple poppies actually represent the fallen and hurt animals from war (which was really sad to learn!!). BUT!!! poppies aren't all about death and war. colors like pink can symbolize platonic love and sympathy while orange symbolizes good health and regeneration!
