FROM NOW ON

Another song where I managed to illicitly download a radio rip before the initial release - and probably the biggest surprise of the batch! What is that beat? Is it.. Is it… wicked  2-Step? Buck-Tick have long flirted with dance music - mixing punk guitars with techno beats since the 90s to create a musical version of Cyberpunk. But this time they’ve abandoned all pretense of being a rock band at all.

This is my second attempt at writing about this song...

...my first entry got bogged down in a potted history of the transition from UK Garage to 2-Step to the original (far more interesting) UK vision of Dubstep and my god, no one cares about this ancient history! All you really need to know is that while rock genres are usually defined by the lead instruments - the style of the guitars or vocals - dance genres are all about the beat.

That hip-shaking rimshot snare on the offbeats during the verse, that comes via the Jamaican influence of 2-step and Dub. However, the musical styling of From Now On are more drawn from trip-hop, from the echoey piano pings to the distorted washes of guitars and crashing waves of electronic feedback like ghostly seagulls coming in at 0:35. It sounds like a beautiful homage to 90s-era Massive Attack.

Buck-Tick have long been blatant in their admiration of Massive Attack, even namedropping them in the lyrics to Devil’s Wings. But where Massive Attack used their dreamlike soundscapes to create an atmosphere of restlessness, tension and unease, From Now On is about warmth and reassurance. The verses start with unresolved, suspended notes and minor chords. But there’s a pumping drone bass at 0:58 slowly building as you realise the tension is from anticipation, rather than fear, until it finds release with the vocals coming in. When the breakbeat hits at 1:27, nervousness gives way to pure excitement.

Again, Buck-Tick show their skillful use of silence to create a sense of space that heightens specific elements - when the music drops out at 1:34, so quiet you can hear Hide breathing, it highlights that little panting intake of breath before assuring us “It’s alright! Don’t worry, don’t worry.” Tension and release, perfectly and effectively balanced. The tiny break of silence makes the throb of the heart-pounding bass at 1:41 hit even harder.

Best bit: the aforementioned “don’t worry” break, obviously. But my personal favourite moment is the solo drizzled lightly between 1:52 to 2:36. It’s the kind of sound that seems to go round corners. When it first comes in, it sounds like feedback. The little swoops and tapped drop-out bits around 2:00 sound like Stabilizer Guitar. The 2:10 - 2:15 slide into the bass region sounds like a theremin. (I clearly miss the theremin so much I’m hallucinating theremin all over this album.) But the bit at 2:30 sounds like synth knob-twiddling. By the ending, from about 3:30 onward, it sounds so convincingly alien, like transmissions from an alternate galaxy, that I've stopped trying to work out what is making the sound, and just allow myself to be carried away by it. This is just the beginning. A long way to go. But the point of a journey is the journey itself, and not the destination. It’s experimental music in its purest sense - making a track just to see where it goes.

Who is the exhortation and reassurance for? Is Hide talking to himself, reassuring himself about the unfamiliar ground the band is treading, creating an album for the first time, without their charismatic singer? Is he talking to the fans, reassuring us that this album itself is a journey out of grief and into hope for the future of the music we love? My own personal explanation is pure fan fiction: over the year of the album’s making, Hide spoke often about his son, who had travelled abroad, a long, long way, to study in England. By the time the album was complete, the son had changed his mind and returned to Japan, probably having found life in post-Brexit Britain too difficult. So I like to think of the lyrics, specifically written in English rather than Japanese, as a message of reassurance to his English-studying son: it’s alright. You can travel far. You can come home. You can always make a new beginning. That's the beauty of such polysemous lyrics. Any and all interpretations fit.

Calls you smart and a genius and other nicknames in that pattern anytime you infodump or tell him something you know. Will fantasize about you having to work on a body he killed. Its exciting to him how vastly different yet oh so similar your guys interests are :D. He asks you suspicious questions all the time too. "Hey, where would you have to hit if you wanted to keep someone alive but also paralyze them? Like,, with a knife or something." "hey babe, what happens if you accidentally stab through your thigh? do you, like, bleed to death or do you still live?" "Babe, I need to know something. How hard do you have to hit someone in the head with a blunt object for it to kill them? Like, do you have to cave their skull in or can you just keep it in one piece but still kill the person???" If you dont know hes one of the ghostfaces already, he wont tell you for a long time. One time, after he asked a lot of extremely suspicious questions, you made some joke about him being a murderer. He laughed but then his face went blank. "What if i was?" and anyway he told you the truth and was in awe that you didnt leave him. yeah you guys are in love.

Hello Mary - 0%Hello Mary are a new band to me, but this track caught my attention immediately. It’s a frantic, urgent and unexpected blast of noise and creativity. HEALTH ft. Lauren Mayberry - ASHAMEDWhen it comes to choosing collaborators HEALTH never miss. CHVRCHES vocalist Lauren Mayberry sounds like she was made for this, the darker witch housey tone the perfect compliment to her ethereal vocals. Orla Gartland - Backseat DriverThe flourishes of percussion and guitar counter melodies are so delightfully playful on this track, I defy anybody to put this on their headphones whilst out for a walk and not instantly find a little extra dance in their step. 

Gaffa Tape Sandy - Body In The Water This ones for the fun lovers. Stand By Me in song form, with sing song melodies, beautiful harmonies and a full raucous sound expressing nostalgia with every beat.

Destroy Boys - Boyfeel

O’ gender, you ever vexing foe. 

Linkin Park - Casualty

I don’t know what it says that my favourite track on the new Linkin Park album is by far the least they sound like Linkin Park, but this absolutely fucks, Emily’s voice sounds so good on the screams and every time the drums come back in for the chorus is euphoric.

underscores - CCTV

Here it is folks, my SONG OF THE YEAR. I’ve listened to underscores Wall Socket (Directors Cut) possibly in the hundreds of times at this point* and I still get chills everytime I get to CCTV. It’s a beautifully unsettled and haunting song, cryptic and amorphous in its sound. I don’t have the words to fully describe my feelings for this song, they exist outside of language. *Please listen to this album in its entirety, it’s honestly one of the best things I’ve ever heard and I’m not being hyperbolic.

Fat Dog - Closer To God

Ever since BC,NR dropped Opus I’ve been wanting more Klezmer infused chaos. Well Fat Dog are here to deliver in a big way, Closer To God goes hard on both the klezmer AND the chaos. It’s bouncing, it’s thumping, it’s klezmering, it’s Fat Dog BABY!

Glass beach - coelacanth

Coelacanth is prog-rock perfection, building upon a central theme with various perspectives and extrapolations of ideas. Building those ideas into a thesis that pulls together growing to an immensity far beyond the sum of its parts. Nothing is wasted here every beat, every frequency, vital to the cohesion of the whole. An absolute monster of a track.

Architects - Curse

Architects are a band who I always appreciate them trying something different. it, doesn’t always work for me, but always feels like they do it with sincerity and put everything into it. Curse is one of those occasions where it REALLY works for me. There’s elements that sound like All  Our Gods Have Abandoned Us era Architects and then Sam come through with those really nice clean high vocals in the chorus. The juxtaposition is great and really makes the track stand out for me. Great breakdown as well.

Projector - Don’t Give Anything Up For Love

Chorus of the year. Huge chorus. Love it.

Jane Remover - Dream Sequence

Dream Sequence is beautiful slab of gooey shoe gazey goodness wiith a slight hyperpop tint. Definitely one to listen to with headphones, feel all of its gorgeous layers wash over you and ask yourself “if you could go anywhere, would you want to stay here?”

The Cure - Endsong

THEY’RE FUCKING BACK! Endsong fits amongst some of The Cure’s greatest work, it’s a perfect culmination of everything The Cure are and everything they mean to me, and those lyrics... FUCK, those lyrics! You just know when Robert Smith has you holding out over 6 minutes for his first syllable, you’re going to get some absolute gold. Excuse me whilst I sit here and have a little listen and a big cry.

FKA twigs - Eusexua

FKA twigs describes Eusexua as a "sensation of being so euphoric" that one could "transcend human form". When the beat dropped, I fully understand what she meant by this. The suspense built through the first half of the track is released in waves by a pulsing bassline that pushes the track higher and higher. Extra points to FKA Twigs for also creating the music video of the year with Eusexua/The Drums of Death.

Soft Play - Everything and Nothing

I had a real time of it choosing which Soft Play track would make it on this list. On a different day it could have very easily been Worms on Tarmac, but the heart won out on this one. The line “I see your smile in other peoples faces” destroys me every time I hear it. A beautiful, touching song.

Speed - The First TestThe First Test sounds like a solid hardcore track, then the flute hits. Yes, we have flute hardcore.

Better Lovers - Future Myopia

It’s no secret Greg Puciato is one of my favourite vocalists in heavy music and he is on top form here, also the chorus of Future Myopia may be the first song where Better Lovers didn’t sound like somebody mashing together TDEP and ETID* but instead became their own thing entirely, and what that thing is, is GOOD. 

*(don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved God Made Me An Animal)

Lambrini Girls - God’s Country

You can always rely on Lambrini Girls to put things bluntly and succinctly. “Sorry bestie, but it’s giving austerity”. Another banger from some of Brighton’s best.

Heriot - Harm Sequence

I went to a festival a couple of years back where I spent a morning doing about an hour of yoga in a forest and then found myself in a circle pit at 10.30 in the morning while Heriot were playing. I’ve never felt the spiritual peace of yoga leave my body so quickly. This track is pummeling, Vocalist Debbie Gough sounds straight up demonic, and oh when that guitar solo rips in. This is what metalcore should be striving for more.

IDLES - Idea 01

I will stand by Brutalism being Idles greatest album, but Crawler is a close second and Idea 01 carries across many of it’s greatest strengths. Joe Talbot’s contemplative croons, the tape loops and ambient soundscaping, and the way it builds, oh the way it builds.

Lip Critic - In The Wawa (Convinced I’m A God)

I think I’ve called Show Me The Body “If Death Grips were a hardcore band” in the past. Well Lip Critic are like “If a hardcore band were Death Grips” (it makes sense, honest). In The Wawa also feels like it pays just as much to the playfulness of the B-52s or their zoomer counterparts 100 Gecs. It’s an oppressive high energy anxiety inducing noise that you can’t help but smile through. A perfectly executed contradiction.

Charli xcx - I think about it all the time

Confession time - I thought BRAT was kinda mid. I really didn’t get the hype on this one, How I’m Feeling Now was a far superior album. I don’t even think this track is that good, it’s pretty shit from a songwriting perspective, but its inability to make its point with any finesse is kinda why it’s on this list. I have at this point been asked hundreds of times if I am ever going to have, or would ever want, children. My answer is and always has been resolute, I never want to be a parent. That shit ain’t for me. But hearing someone else grapple with these ideas in such a matter of fact, open and honest way it hit me like a gut punch and by god did I have one hell of an existential crisis after listening to this song on loop a few times. So yeah, kinda shit song but it made me feel something, so good art? (Sympathy is a knife is actually the best song on BRAT)

Girl Scout - I Just Needed You To Know

Oh man I just love the drums in this one, the way they skitter around in the verse and the push into the chorus, it’s good stuff. Also you hearing those funky little guitar sounds and that wacky solo? Pure joy.

Kesha - JOYRIDEGet in the clown car motherfuckers, it’s time for a joyride BEEP BEEP. She is finally free and this is a victory lap, she’s earned the right to be like this.

Slotface - Ladies Of The Fight

What would it sound like if Fight Club was a feminist pop punk song? Maybe not a question you’ve ever asked but one you’ve now got an answer to. It sounds like this, it’s fun, it’s tongue in cheek and it’s a bop.

The Armed - Martyr Song

The Armed continue to surprise at every turn, Martyr song starts lives on the more accessible side of The Armed’s repertoire, it’s a nice change of pace almost sounding like a slightly fucked Queens of the Stoneage track, or maybe even The Killers. Then the trumpets come out and things get a bit zany, a bit screamy, and a bit loud, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

High Vis- Mob DLA

High Vis rally their hardcore spirit to let out a vital scream about the state of a government and country that neglects the people most in need and deserving of it’s support. Marginalised communities left to fight for their own survival, simultaneously victimised and villainised whilst the rich keep getting richer and more powerful.

Geordie Greep - Motorbike

Motorbike is a fascinating study of maximalist lyrical and music storytelling. As our narrator falls into a midlife crisis the soundtrack clatters around him, it’s pace increasing with his panicked state growing and building breaking into something new as he envisions his freedom upon a motorbike, free from his life, from his responsibility. The reality crashes back in along with his panic as the guilt of his escapist ideas catch up to him. Cue a swans-esque cacophony.

Oneohtrix Point Never - My Dream Dungeon Makeover

Daniel Lopatin knows how to make sounds that scratch my brain in exactly the write way those beautiful harpsichords, the scratchy scrabbly electronics, those soft pads and that weird feedback guitar noise… it all folds together so beautifully like a delicious noise soup that I just want to dip myself into like a freshly baked roll and soak it all up.

Doechii - Nissan Altima

If you haven’t watched Doechii’s Tiny Desk COncert, go add it to your watchlist. This track is just a sample of the high energy fun she delivers on that performance. It’s cheeky, it’s playful and it is insanely talented.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - RAINDROPS CAST IN LEAD

I am constantly in awe how GY!BE manage to be one of the most politically loud bands around without any vocals. They are able to paint such vivid pictures with their music, of emotions and feelings but also of fully realised scenes that burst to life in the listeners mind. Raindrops  cast in lead starts dismal and apocalyptic beforepulling together to promises of a better future if we all work towards it. The field recording at the center of Raindrops pulls everything together and gives the composition a beautiful sense of place.

Bob Vylan - Reign

Reign is such a genius switch up for Bob Vylan, just when I felt their sound was starting to wear thin for me, Humble As The Sun changed everything. Some great lyrics here as well and ooh that beat change at the end, it goes so hard.

The Marias - Run Your Mouth

Some gorgeous chilled out pop music, that bassline is delicious, could listen to it all day. Really catchy guitar hook. This song is exactly what I want from a pop song.

Knives - Sadness

Knives manage to blend elements of a post punk and hardcore in a way I’ve never quite hard before, it’s an exciting and intriguing listen. Off kilter and engaging punk full of emotion.

GEL - Shame

There’s a lot of hardcore and hardcore adjacent music on this list, but that’s because it’s one of the most exciting spaces in music right now. Bands like Gel continue to push it in new and interesting ways whilst keeping the spirit alive, Shame sounds so vibrant, as separate elements pop out in the production to bring extra body to the track. 

Vower - Shroud

I’ve never seen so many men crying in one space as at Palm Reader’s farewell performance at 2000 Trees this year. It was beautiful and poignant, and I was crying alongside them. Josh McKeown has my favourite voice in metalcore and Palm Reader were a top 10 band for me. The sadness of Palm Reader’s breakup was tempered by the announcement of a new band Vower featuring McKeown alongside ex-members of Toska and Black Peaks and yeah, it’s pretty damn good. Maybe a future without Palm Reader aint so bad when we still get music like this.

Karen Dio - Sick Ride

This one just got stuck in my head for about 3 months. There’s nothing new or particularly special about this imo, but sometimes a good hook is just a good hook and that’s all you need.

Du Blonde & Laura Jane Grace - Solitary Individual

I am a solitary individual and Laura Jane Grace is something of a personal hero of mine, so when she’s singing words that could’ve come straight from my own head over a really damn catchy chorus it makes me very happy. 

Fontaines DC - Starburst

Yeah this one is very very good, there’s so much character so much depth, the way the metaphors and allusions pile up on top of each other with Grian Chatten’s deft lyricism, that tonal shift in the bridge, those visceral gasps in the chorus… it’s perfection.

WILLOW - Symptom Of Life

I’m a sucker for a 7/4 time signature on a pop song. There’s so much interesting stuff going on musically on this track, some gorgeous chords and achromatic notes and a lot for me to love as a bass player.

Magdalena Bay - That’s My Floor

This track has one of those crunchy guitar tones that kinda makes it sound like your speaker’s broken. I love that. Every single choice on this song is wild and unexpected I had no idea what I was listening to from one moment to the next, great stuff.

Amyl and the Sniffers - U Should Not Be Doing That

More saxophones in punk please, it sounds so good. We promise we won’t just compare you to X-Ray Spex…

Shelf Lives - Uncle Fred

Shelf Lives are insane in the best way. 2 minutes of fun frenetic nonsense. Also nice Shaun of the Dead reference.

Calva Louise - Under The Skin

Calva Louise’s evolution since Rhinoceros has been fascinating. At one point it looked like they were going down the muse symphonice space rock route, then they pulled out the harsh vocals and now they are something entirely of their own. Under The Skin is PACKED with fresh ideas. Classical piano, djenty guitars and a scifi narrative all get blended together.

CLT DRP - Until You Showed Me

It wouldn’t be a end of year list of mine if Clt Drp didn’t show up somewhere… Until You Showed Me is a lover letter to gender non-conformity and to being seen through others eyes, to feel that pure love and validation. It’s beautiful.

Xiu Xiu - Veneficium

Jamie Stewart’s vocalisations are wonderfully melodramatic, that buzzing bass tone roots itself at the base of the skull, the unsettled call and response guitars… everything here pulls together to create a piece of goth noise excellence

Blood Command - We Could Be Heaven

I never know what Blood Command will release next. We Could Be Heaven is a pop punk banger with more than a touch of Andrew W.K. to it and it is SO MUCH FUN. 

Dreamcar - We Rats

Davey Havok’s vocals may be my favourite sound in the world and he is having a ball on this track alongside members of No Doubt. A brooding intro bursts into a great poppy chorus about everyones favourite furry little rodent.

Bring Me The Horizon - Youtopia

This track is mainly on my list because it scratches a very weird nostalgia itch. The melody is almost identical to Hikaru Utadu’s Sanctuary (the opening song to one of the best video games of all time, Kingdom Hearts 2) mixed with some deftones. It’s so close I feel it must be a deliberate musical reference, both songs are absolute bangers.

Black Dresses - ZERO FANTASY

This very well might be Black Dresses final release (actually for real this time). If it is, LAUGHINGFISH feels like a fitting send off including some of the bands most accessible and heart-rending material to date. ZERO FANTASY straddles the space between pop song and the weird noise sphere black dresses normally sit in reelng in their more esoteric tendencies to deliver something that is still notably Black Dresses but could also pass for a radio ready alt-pop tune. There’s a great synth melody that comes in at the climax of the track over these tumbling snares and thrumming bass that encapsulates the sound perfectly.

GRANT MORRISON / THE MAGICIAN TEMPLE artefact #001

Rian Hughes has been one of my longest-running creative partners, with collaborations going back decades now.

Back in 2015, we talked about doing a Tarot deck reflective of my ‘Pop Mag!c’ system which could update and re-contextualise some of the familiar imagery of the cards.

This was the sample as proof of concept and I chose my personal favourite card.

Here is The Magician with accompanying commentary to suggest not only the visual style of the image but also the kind of symbolic content I wanted us to pack into the design.

Our Magician is the Ultimate Pop Star, the Master of all s/he surveys – all four elements in the Cardinal directions. S/he is the centre of the known physical Universe, the unique, scientific and individual, self-elected, self-directed Prime Mover of all that is; the arbiter of history, and the future that is come. The Magician, of course, represents only one potent, though very specific state of consciousness among the many available to the human organism. The Magician is how we feel when we master our art to produce a great work of any kind. The Magician is how we feel when the world seems to be doing exactly what we want and all the TV shows and record charts are aimed somehow directly at us.

To add to the pop star feel, perhaps our magician can be a little bit Ziggy Stardust or Kiss - with lightning bolt zigzags on their face. The lightning bolt is a glyph of the messenger gods, or gods of magic and language, like Hermes, Mercury, Thoth and Odin, among others. The lightning bolt – an exchange of energy, which links sky to earth – is symbolic of the contact between God (equivalent to the highest “non-dual” state of consciousness available to the human mind) and Man (representing ordinary consciousness).  

The Magician card in the Tarot deck traditionally shows a confident, poised young man at an altar representing the entire material universe.

The Magician stands for human ingenuity and mastery at the height of its powers. The Renaissance, the western Enlightenment. This is the erect cock and the “1”! In binary notation that interacts with “0” to generate the known universe of phenomena and digital information.  

Sometimes represented by the curving brim of a hat s/he wears or sports, sometimes shown above hir head like a halo, is the “8 on its side” INFINITY SIGN which we will depict as Mobius strip - in fact, I suggest a Mobius Orouboros snake eating its own tail to take care of the crown-of-serpents symbolism often seen on versions of this card.

The Magician raises a wand to the heavens in his right hand, while his left hand points to the earth. This gesture encodes the Hermetic axiom “as above, so below” – macrocosm and microcosm – indicating the special and unique position human consciousness occupies between the infinitesimally large and the infinitesimally small.

The Magician traditionally stands at a 4-square altar – our version suggests a mixing desk which is also the PERIODIC TABLE - upon which there are four magical weapons. These blazing archetypal weapons also represent the 4 suits of the Tarot pack and of conventional playing cards.

S/he is Master/Mistress of the material world and its ever-changing, ever-the-same fashions. The Magician also sees everything in the universe as grist to his creative mill and in this sense is somewhat amoral and lacking in conscience.

The Magician is an alchemist engaged in the Great Work of transforming Lead (ordinary consciousness and the material world) into Gold (exalted consciousness or “Spirit”)

In our image let’s see him juggling these four elemental objects in a figure of 8.

WAND – the Wand is the magician’s magical phallus – the image of his Will, hence its resemblance to an erect penis. Also, ‘I’ and the 1 in binary notation that interacts with 0 to generate the known universe of phenomena and digital information.  It can also be considered as the pointing finger which distinguishes things from other things and directs attention to the particular among the general.

Our Wand is a MICROPHONE.

It represents the Element of Fire. Its colour is RED.

SWORD – the Sword which divides, is a symbol of the intellect and of rational analysis. It is the tool by which human consciousness comprehends and classifies the universe of discrete phenomena.

It represents the Element of Air. Its traditional colour is YELLOW.

CUP – the Cup, which receives and nourishes, stands for the emotions. Our Cup is a TEST TUBE.

It is the Holy Grail of Romance and the Ever-giving Cauldron of Celtic Myth, the Undry. Both receptive and nourishing, the Cup has been considered the female counterpart to the Phallic Wand.

If the Wand is the erect 1, the Cup is the vulval 0 – the plug and the socket. The impulse and the generative matrix.

The colour traditionally associated with the Prime Cup and the Element of Water is BLUE. OR GREEN!!!

The Cup is also the bottomless “0”, the universal, unimaginable hole that’s infra-red, hot and seductive enough to attract, engulf and render limp every theory and structure created by masculine intent. The all-swallowing Black Hole of sci-fi speculative cosmology.

PENTACLE – the pentacle – or disc – represents the material world. The disc is associated with coinage, money, wealth, DNA, heritage and all the immediate physical concerns of the human organism.

In this image, the Pantacle is a PLATINUM DISC – a record with a rainbow surface.

The Pentacle stands in for the Element of Earth. Its traditional colour is BLACK. However, this black soil-loam is only how the material world appears from a higher-dimensional perspective.

In fact the material world is prismatic – therefore, the Pantacle should be divided into 4 pie sections, each a different colour, each representing one of the 4 elements. RED. BLACK. BLUE and YELLOW.

Here we need a reflective or symmetrical background.

The Magician transcends duality and the elements – therefore s/he may often be described as hermaphroditic or otherwise asexual or androgynous in appearance. S/he is metamorphic, neither one thing nor the other, becoming what is required at every turn. That’s because the Magician like language can assume any shape.

S/he can endorse any well-expressed ideology. S/he can impart undying wisdom or lead the unwary into Hell.

The God forms associated with the Magician include Hermes, Thoth, Ganesh, Nabu, Ogma and Legba. The winged heels of Mercury are depicted here as jet engine aircraft wings on a wholly futuristic androgynous figure.

The Magician is all scientists, all writers, artist, all artificers, con-men and healers, all creative people who feel justified to impose their wondrous word-driven vision of reality upon all other living things.

The Magician is also known as “Le Jongleur” or Juggler. There must always be a super-modern, populist, glitzy and deceptive element of charlatanism or showmanship to the Magician. S/he is Houdini and Derren Brown, Paul Daniels and Sooty, and all your favourite entertainers too.

At his side is the mocking APE OF THOTH, the “cynocephalus”. The Ape represents interpretation, which takes the word/the Logos of the magician and twists it to become gibberish or to shift and even reverse the intended meaning.

The Ape is sometimes regarded via information theory as the “noise” to the magician’s “signal”. He's the bad review, the mistimed gag, the bum note, the aging idiot glimpsed in the mirror, monkey-dancing in motley.

To this card is attributed the second Hebrew letter BETH – Beth means a house – the house represents the Magician’s mastery of the material universe – the house is often represented in traditional cards by a structure arching over the magician’s head – often a bower made of rose bushes. Red 8-petalled roses – with thorns – form a bower above the Magician’s head, framing him.

In our card, I’d like the house to be the Tree of Life itself, seen as a 3-Dimensional structure – the flat circuit diagram of the Tree of Life can, be seen as a 3-D wire-frame structure which resembles a building with a pyramid roof but only when we pull the material sphere up into the sphere of the imagination. So here I’d like to see this rotated 3-D Tree structure framing our magician.

The Magician, as mentioned above, has an androgynous aspect – the idea of the Hermaphrodite combines the god forms of Hermes and Aphrodite. Hence Bowie, New Romantic, drag, and showbiz culture. This image of the magician as spiritually bisexual, of mixed or fluid gender, shows up in various forms in many cultures and philosophies.

Our card therefore should depict the Magician as a competent, confident, androgynous rock star, the ultimate entertainer putting on a dazzling show for the universe.

This card shows a performer, a performance, a gig.

Grant - this will be much more polished when finished, but here’s the basics pinned down.

I tend to use colours in a schematic manner when laying out the shapes, just to differentiate things - hence these brash colours will change and be made more subtle as we go.

The cup I thought might work coming out of the periodic table and looking like the inflationary model of the Big Bang - creation, hot and dense inside, and shaped like a goblet:

I’ve put the Beth character on the record sleeve - it’s a bad pun on house music.

I wonder if the Ziggy lightening could also reference Harry Potter somehow?

The juggling in a figure 8 was hard to visualise - there were not enough items to convey the shape of the 8, plus the hands are otherwise occupied and so the objects looked like they wee free floating. So may need a rethink.

Tree of Life is still to be added.

I’ll also design a border of some kind that will run on all the cards, and each will have a type treatment at the bottom, TBD.

Hi Rian –

The Magician card is looking fantastic – just what I hoped for. Only a couple of notes.

I like the face and head of the character in the alternate version, as the look is more feminine and less overtly Ziggy Stardust/Bowie. Maybe we could use a touch more femininity. Love the lighting bolt referencing Ziggy AND Harry Potter.

The disco ball could take on a more appropriately esoteric dimension if it was moved to the centre above the magician’s head, taking the place of Kether, the highest sephira on the Tree of Life diagram.

While traditional to the Rider-Waite imagery, the robe and cape the Magician is wearing seem slightly old-fashioned. I still like how it all looks however so any other suggestions are just thrown out as food for thought:  the Magician wearing a kind of Ziggy/Paradax catsuit with the Qabalistic lightning flash on the front and a bra perhaps.

OR more convincingly a Major Tom style Mercury SPACESUIT without the helmet (a Mercury style suit would of course tie nicely into the generally “mercurial” tone of this card…hmmm..)

Having said that, I’m reluctant to have you do too much more work and the image looks so good as it is, we may not have to include any further elements of modernity at this stage.

Ponder on the Narrow House, part 3 

Mazikeen + Eve + Michael, gen fic (for now), warning for gun violence

Along the California coastline, the cruise ship Illustrious Voyager bore four thousand three hundred and ten passengers, one thousand two hundred and ninety-six crewmembers, and two guide dogs.

Five thousand six hundred and eight souls, in total.

At around 4pm, without anyone noticing, that number became five thousand six hundred and nine.

Hands clasped behind her back, Eve strolled down the promenade, admiring the vessel’s size and beauty. This fresh new millennium’s wealth astonished her. Sickened, sometimes. Entranced, sometimes. But always astonished.

Back in the garden, they’d slept on and under rocks. When it rained, they got wet. When large animals came by, they hid. No weapons. No shelter. No blankets. The only resource they’d had in abundance was food. Good grief – so much food. God had been so proud of all the different fruits and nuts and mushrooms he’d made available to them, and Adam had been so grateful. Eve supposed she had been, too.

It hadn’t stopped her from one day approaching her husband and the plump rabbits resting in his lap – two of several dozen pets – and asking if he didn’t think the cold nights would be much more endurable if they each had a warm pair of fur slippers.

Then she’d met Lucifer. Fallen in love. Bitten the apple. Learned how powerful he and his Father truly were. That was when the real questions, the sticky, prickly questions, had come bubbling up.

If Lucifer has such a vast family, with so many siblings, why can’t I have even one? she’d asked the sky. Why is Adam all I get?

And later: If You can simply bring people into existence, why must I scream and bleed and shit myself in order to have children? Am I doing it wrong? Is there another way? If there isn’t, why not?

And later: Why is nothing fair?

And, most recently, after meeting Mazikeen: Why isn’t everything at least equally unfair? Why do humans get a world of options while Maze and her family are expected to serve angels from birth to death? Why isn’t Maze allowed into Heaven, even after an eternity of loyalty and hard work?

“Sorry,” she said, flashing white teeth at a passing crewmember. “I’m trying to find a friend of mine. Can you tell me how to get to Room 835?”

Half an hour later, there was a splash and the ship’s population dropped to five thousand six hundred and seven.

Before binding his arms and legs, Eve had secured Andrew Bismarck’s lifejacket and gagged him. Furious and helpless, he bobbed alongside her as the ship moved on and Mazikeen rowed up in her inflatable raft, wearing a sunset-orange swimsuit.

“Should I be worried about those, babe?” she asked as she gripped Bismarck’s lifejacket and hauled him out of the water.

Eve smiled at the dolphin pod swimming in playful loops around her, and patted the nearest one’s nose. “No. They’re my friends.”

The inflatable wasn’t big enough for three people, so Eve held on to a friend’s dorsal fin and let him drag her back to The Choronzon.

Michael stood on the deck, looking bored. As they climbed aboard, their prisoner slung over Mazikeen’s shoulder, he drawled, “Seriously? This sad specimen’s worth two million dollars?”

“Actually, his net worth is eight hundred million,” said Mazikeen, dumping him down. “Two million is just what his ex-wife is willing and able to pay.”

Wringing out her hair, Eve added, “She took half his money in the divorce but she gave almost all of it to a chimpanzee shelter. I really like her!”

His lip curled. “How delightfully sordid. Isn’t this all a little beneath you, Ms Mazikeen? I mean, you’re a big deal in Hell. High Commander of Lucifer’s legions, head advisor to the king himself. Aren’t you worried taking jobs like this diminishes you?”

Busy handcuffing Bismarck to the railing, Mazikeen said, “Eve, honey? Do me a favour?”

“Boop!” Eve chirped, having already snuck up behind Michael, and pushed him overboard.

“I know it’s your whole gimmick,” Mazikeen called down as he splashed and spluttered, his face red with princely indignation. “And I know you don’t have a lot else going for you. But the next time you try that on me, I will stop being nice. Kapish?”

“Kapish,” he muttered.

The Choronzon had barely travelled a mile before Eve spotted Bismarck’s henchmen coming after them.

“Someone gimme details!” shouted Mazikeen, busy putting a bulletproof vest on over her bikini and opening up the box she’d told Dan contained a fishing rod, not a halberd.

Eve peered through her binoculars. “Two speedboats. Twelve guys on jet skis. Guns everywhere.”

“Heh. Awesome. Mickey – move that tight ass to the front and make like a nice juicy target.”

“Wait, what about-…” Michael began, trailing off as Mazikeen dove gracefully into the sea.

Bouncing from foot to foot, Eve shot him a grin. “Don’t look so glum, sourpuss. This is the fun part.”

She’d never spoken to Michael in Heaven, despite the millennia they’d both resided only two miles apart, her in a lakeside cottage on the outskirts of the Silver City, him in the crystal palace in its centre.

Granted, she’d not exactly had a warm and fuzzy relationship with any of Lucifer’s siblings. They all knew what had happened in the garden. Some had been nice – Amenadiel had visited often, even though he’d never had much to say and they’d spent their time together skipping stones across the lake’s surface. But the others had kept her at a distance. She was a bad influence.

Michael, however, was the only angel she’d not ever said one word to.

She’d seen him, now and then, in the early days, when she was the only human in Heaven and, as such, grudgingly invited to divine family get-togethers. On those occasions, she’d spent too much time feeling awkward and out-of-place to pay attention to the sullen figure lurking in whatever shadows were available. The one time she’d glanced his way, it had been to marvel at the stories of people getting the twins mixed up; beyond the raw basics of bone structure, Michael couldn’t have looked less like her old lover.

Bullets sprayed across the hull. Humming, Eve stepped daintily into Michael’s shadow, seconds before they started bouncing off his shoulders and chest.

“It is beneath her,” he muttered.

She made an ambiguous noise. “How d’you figure?”

There came a shout and a splash from the nearest jet ski. The bullets stopped.

“C’mon. She’s Mazikeen. Everyone in the Silver City knows about Mazikeen. Ordinarily, we couldn’t give two dry shits about Lucifer’s minions, but her? She’s a minor celebrity. The power behind Hell’s throne. Christ, it’s no secret my beloved twin couldn’t govern his way out of a paper bag.”

“Yeah,” she said, smiling fondly. “He’s kind of bad at everything. Except music. He’s a great musician.”

More shouting. More shooting. More bullets bouncing off Michael’s torso. Mazikeen rode by, one hand gripping her newly-acquired jet ski’s throttle lever, the other clutching her bloodstained halberd. Watching her circle the enemy, Eve was reminded of a sheep dog.

Michael went on: “And then there’s the fact that for a while, everyone thought Lucifer was going to marry her. It was all anyone could talk about. Jophiel was taking bets on when the proposal would happen. She’d have been High Commander and the Queen of Hell. Instead? All of a sudden, Lucifer takes an indefinite vacay to the mortal realm, drags her with him, and next thing anyone knows, she’s working behind a bar.”

The remaining jet skis and their terrified, wounded riders had been neatly rounded up, which meant it was time for Eve to open her purse.

“Um – how long have those been in there?” asked Michael, watching her take out three grenades.

“You want one?” she offered. “Don’t forget to take the pin out before you throw it. I did that my first time.”  

One thing to be said for millions of dull, dull years spent sitting next to God’s Greatest Warrior, skipping stones across a lake; your aim got good.

The first blast was a warning, not close enough to actually kill any of Bismarck’s men, though the resultant waves did knock several into the water. They tried to retreat, turning their vehicles around, only to remember Mazikeen, corralling them single-handed and now armed with machine guns she’d confiscated from those already bested.

When they saw the second and third grenade incoming, they gave up and abandoned the jet skis, jumping into the sea and swimming for their lives.

“Fuck!” Michael yelped, blocking his ears at the concomitant explosions.

Gazing past the debris and smoke, Eve saw Mazikeen head for the nearest of the two speedboats. Its occupants, preoccupied with aiming a rocket launcher at The Choronzon, saw her coming far too late.

“I get your point,” said Eve, as her girlfriend and her halberd made short work of the crew. “But that’s a really… how can I put this? It’s a really angelic way of looking at things. Maze doesn’t consider anything ‘beneath her’.”

“Wow. Sick burn. You’re basically admitting she has no pride.”

“Oh, she’s got pride. Tons of pride. Her pride’s just dependant on how well she does a job, not on the type of job she has. She wasn’t happy working at Lux, but that wasn’t because she thought bartending was ‘beneath her’; it was because she prefers doing things she’s good at. Customer service isn’t really one of her strengths.”

The second speedboat was abandoned by its crew mere seconds before Mazikeen rammed the first speedboat into it, cackling victoriously.

“Actually,” Eve said, moving from Michael’s shadow to where Mazikeen had earlier set a crate of peach soda – her favourite – out on the deck, “now that you mention it, I guess I’m the one with no pride. Haven’t really ever had anything to be proud of. Your Dad never gave me the chance. I was never meant to do things. I was just meant to be.”

Michael snorted. “Lucky you. Trust me; he may have softened in his later years, but back in the day he never, ever stopped riding our asses. You think Lucy really rebelled because he had better plans for how the universe should be run? Because he was an innovator? Nope. Lazy dick just hated being told to do his chores.”

By the time Mazikeen swam back to them, saltwater had washed off the blood and her ponytail had come loose.

“Oh, hey,” said Eve, gripping her hand and pulling her up. “A mermaid.”

After pressing a rough kiss to her cheek and taking a swig of peach soda, Mazikeen asked, “You okay? He did his job?”

Eve patted the angel’s shoulder – the one that wouldn’t hurt. “He was terrific! Awesome addition to the team.”

“I didn’t do anything,” Michael mumbled.

Ignoring him, Mazikeen snatched up a towel to dry her hair. “Glad to hear it. Alright! Let’s get Bismarck back to shore, get paid, and find a place to have dinner so we can toast Team Hellrazor’s first successful mission.”

“R-A-Z-O-R,” Eve informed Michael. “To make it cooler.”

Every Boros Commander, Part 1

Every one of these rambles is going to be longer and nerdier than the last, I guess. We’ll see how long I can keep that up for.

If you aren’t or haven’t been at least a casual fan of Magic: The Gathering, this post is going to be completely lost on you, sorry.

Oh also I’m having to split this in half since it took basically all afternoon to write and its still juuuust not done.

Boros gets a lot of shit for being bad and having bad generals for EDH until recently, and seeing as its my favourite two-colour pair I felt like exploring, well, every option we have for the combo. I’m excluding the new Commander Legends partner commanders in this, since I don’t have all day, and I’m also not covering Akiri and Bruse Tarl since no-one ever builds just Boros with them, and I’m not including 3-5 colour decks that just happen to have red and white in them. That’s not Boros.

Boros’s strengths are in manipulating combat, in tokens, and with Voltron strategies. It is the best pair for Equipment decks and top tier for Aggressive decks, to the point of being arguably shoehorned by WOTC into such strategies for a long time. Its weaknesses are mostly to do with card draw and ramp, possibly the most important things in a casual game of Commander, but the former is alleviated by many of red’s recent card draw options and the latter easily supplemented with mana rocks- if you have enough money, any deck can have good ramp, but enough budget options exist these days that it isn’t too bad even for the “worst colors”.

Anyway, enough beating around the bush lets get into this. Going in Chronological order.

Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran (29th most played as of writing)

…It seriously took until Ravnica to get a legendary RW creature? Heinous. Cool as Agrus is as protagonist of the Ravnica novel, his card simply does not hold up in 2021, let alone beforehand. He’s a Glorious Anthem style commander, except he works best only with creatures that are both red and white, and not nearly enough cards produce multicolored tokens for him to boost. Oh, also he’s a 5 mana 3/3 with no protection or evasion that has to attack to get his effect. Save it for the novel.

Razia, Boros Archangel (30th most played as of writing, the last place finalist)

Speaking of Ravnica. Razia is fucking cool, between the art and unique, if underwhelming, activated ability. She is also 8 mana and not green. She is the only commander to my knowledge that can redirect damage to opponents’s creatures, so if that’s the deck you want to build, go for it, though enjoy the distressingly small cardpool. God, they couldn’t have given her an extra power, could they?

Brion Stoutarm (6th most played as of writing)

Brion is the first actually viable commander of the bunch, being a pretty decent head to either a Fling deck with Ball Lightnings or Acts of Treason, or just Giant Tribal with his Lorwyn compatriots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or played against Brion yet, but I’d be interested in doing so. Having lifegain in the command zone with a deck that likes throwing damage around is pretty nice. It’s surprising that he’s still so high, especially considering EDHREC (my data source) only now pulls from the last 2 years of decks, but I’m certainly not sad to see him there.

Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer (19th most played as of writing)

Spoilers: Jor is actually the best Anthem commander. +3/+0 is huge, and when most of your ramp and some of your draw is artifacts you’re not going to have a hard time getting metalcraft. 5 mana is a fair chunk for an aggressive deck but he turns the damage output up enough notches that I think he’s pretty good. Underrated in my opinion. How are there more Tajic, Legion’s Edge decks than Jor Kadeen decks?

Basandra, Battle Seraph (24th most played as of writing)

Basandra is the head of my current Boros deck, being a pillowfort/combat manipulation deck. She’s, uh, not ideal in that even, since she stops even you from casting removal and such during combat. Having an extra must attack effect in the zone is nice, though, and a flying commander can be nice for closing games out. Basandra at least has the gift of being fairly open-ended, but also, she doesn’t really do anything, so that’s probably got something to do with it.

On a side note, fuck you Terese Nielsen for turning out to be a cunt. No-one else seems to have drawn this character, so I can’t even make an alter. Fuck.

Gisela, Blade of Goldnight (10th most played as of writing)

Gisela has a lot of very attractive words on her. Unfortunately, 7 mana and that ability means that as soon as you drop her out of the zone, you better use her quick because she isn’t sticking around long. Obviously lends herself to group slug or Earthquake decks, but the former paints an even bigger target on your head and the latter is even mana hungrier than normal. I prefer her in the 99.

Aurelia, the Warleader (5th most played as of writing)

Aurelia was the “best” Boros commander for a long time, and it’s easy to see why- haste and an extra combat trigger add up to a lot of damage very quickly and it’s not like there was much competition for a while. She’s actually the only one of the top 5 Boros commanders that wasn’t printed in the last 5 years, so I guess she’s stood the test of time, much like Brion.  I’d argue she’s pretty boring though, seeing as she has the one thing she does, but she does it well and there’s no faulting her for that. She’s the closest we have to r/custommagic’s favourite “double combat triggers” legend. A lot of people seem to run her as Angel Tribal too, which of the available Angels in the zone I’d argue that’s a pretty good shout. The Red/Boros Angels are fun!

Tajic, Blade of the Legion (20th most played as of writing)

The first on this list I’d consider playing as Voltron, Tajic’s first card is indestructible which as a former Sapling of Colfenor player is fucking excellent in the zone for when you have to play defensively. He does, however, require other creatures in the deck to truly shine, and you do have to have those creatures attack, so it can be awkward to get the most out of him. He’s a cool dude though, much better than his other card imo.

Anax and Cymede (23rd most played as of writing)

The first draft I ever played was a Born of the Gods draft in which I splashed Anax and Cymede. Clearly, I had no idea what I was doing. Anax and Cymede look a lot like Tajic in deck, to be honest, since they’re creatures that like having buffs but also want other creatures around to benefit. Heroic is kind of an awkward requirement, however, and I suspect you’d be spending more time just having it as a buff for the royals themselves. Its nice to see a loving married couple as a Magic card, though, I’m sure things will be good for them always.

Iroas, God of Victory (9th most played as of writing)

Somehow despite it being common in the 99 of aggressive decks, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Iroas deck in my local metas. I think it has the potential to be pretty powerful, since if you can meet his (admittedly harsh) requirement he’s an indestructible evasive commander with that magical 7 power making commander damage a 3HKO. And when he’s not ready to rumble, he’s nigh impossible to kill on account of the limited targeted enchantment exile people tend to play in the format. Otherwise, he makes attacking free and bountiful for other creatures, and so is just kinda good to have around- I can see running him for that alone.

Munda, Ambush Leader (27th most played as of writing)

Somehow more people are playing Munda than Razia or Agrus, despite being just the worst commander with Ally in the text (outside the type line, love you Zada) and not doing actual anything outside of that. Why the fuck doesn’t he draw the cards? Why does he just stack them? God, Munda sucks. Also I have like 3 of them, since I drafted a lot of that deck in that environment and people just pass him around. Anyone want one? Be my guest.

Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas (11th most played as of writing)

Precon face commanders always get a bit more love and a bit more power than the average legend, and Kalemne is no exception. Double Strike in the zone on a creature that gets bigger is just nuts, and it means she kills people astonishingly quickly. Even my non-voltron Kalemne deck that just wanted to play big idiots had her as a huge threat since even if she gets killed she stays big. Kalemne also happens to be probably better for Giant tribal than Brion, though he does at least get to yeet those removal magnets if they do get removed.

Anya, Merciless Angel (26th most played as of writing)

I didn’t think Anya would be this low. While she is another indestructible commander, it is conditional, and her abilities are self-sabotaging- if someone is in range of being killed by her, you’re probably not going to want to attack them just so you can keep indestructible and buffs, but you also, yknow, want to kill them. I can see her being political in this way though- keeping someone alive with her swords at their throat can have some fun implications. I think shes underrated despite her awkwardness.

Archangel Avacyn (14th most played as of writing)

(Her colour identity is RW since her other face is a red creature. It’s a bit odd, I know)

Avacyn was fucking unbeatable in draft and obnoxious in Standard (though one of my favourite magic stories involves her, so,), and since I never managed to get one for Kalemne when that deck was around I have no real love for her. She’s generically powerful without leading in a particular direction, but her flip ability is pretty cool as is her story in the set. It’s OK. Also why do people keep putting her in Angel decks? You know she doesn’t flip off those, right?

Adriana, Captain of the Guard (22nd most played as of writing)

Adriana, Adriana. I didn’t dislike Adriana as much as I did until I actually did the math on her. Typical commander games are 4-player, so she is a +3/+3 anthem at maximum assuming you have good attacks on every single opponent and that none of them are dead yet. I’m really not sure why you’d play this over Jor Kadeen, and it looks like people aren’t, so. Melee was a fun mechanic in draft, but I completely understand why it hasn’t crossed over, ever, to other formats, seeing as there are 7 total cards with it and most of them are draft chaff. CONTINUED IN PART 2...ANOTHER DAY. PROBABLY SOON SINCE IT’S 2/3 DONE ALREADY.

Now I’m more into khh, but I think I can’t say that I’m into it anymore.

Talking about music! I discovered two new songs and I bet you know them already, but for me it was huge woah woah woah! First of it - Sabaton. Thay covered Metallica’s For Whom The Bell Tolls and they did it so good! Secondly - The Heart Asks Pleasure First. They basically made their own song based on one of my favourite piano songs. Oh my.. it’s sooo good!

And still talking about music! I just wanted to say that I also love our Wombo edits! That one with Ezio singing Stressed out was perfect! Mr Auditore looked very believably singing it. I liked the one with Edward and Haytham. I don’t know the song but it had such a christmas vibe! It made me think of Edward and Shay singing Last Christmas or some other shitty Christmas song together. Why them? No idea. I love Altair, but your latest headcanons could make me love them even more.

And! I just wanted to tell you that you inspired me to take japanese lessons on Duolingo. I am aware that such app won’t help me with learning such a language, but at least I can tell you that katakana sucks. Gods, I hate it so much. Hiragana is so pleasurable to learn. And I know katakana is visually similar, but it is a no no from me. I have learnt some basic kanji signs. And I just admire you so much more.

Hey Knifey! I finally have the right mind set to respond to this ask!

So first of all thank you. You always make me blush with your kind words and I have no idea how to react! I want to squeaze you in a hug and give you all the sweets in the world!

As for the rest. You see i have always worked to hard on studying, so hard it actually burned out everything inside so now all i want to do i nothing! But i cant, i really want to go back to spending my free time in more creative way!

Omg Knifey! Finally i met a museum lover! And gods i want to visit them all! And you know? That Icelandinc museum sounds like such a goal, i want to go there 🥺 and Seoul museum of teddy bears?! I want to go there!

Honestly I love all museums and generally history. I enjoy visiting ruins of castles and villages, going to museums of everything! Art, machines, objects! There are always so many things and so many different ways to find the inspiration! And I always take so many photos for 'future references'. Some time ago i was in a gardens which showed different time of gardens of the world and there was this amazing exhibition of demons from Slavic mithology. That was so awesome! As well as Japanese garden!

In began restaurant i have this fried soy bites in some sweet-spicy sauce. So tasty! Im trying to recreate this recipe but so far its 1:0 for the soy :/

As for my leg. Its swollen AF bht i just... Put on my shoe and pretended it didnt exist. I can walk in good shoes but still im worried. As for that little again... I generally have some weird health issues. I had 5 surgeries for different stuff (spine, tumor, nose) so like... Generally i am healthy... Or at least i was until thst damned foot decided to show off. Its been 4 weeks and im still looking for a solution, running different tests and all. Hopefully they will figure out whag is going on.

Tbh i never listen ed to k-pop. I guess its just nkt my type of music but I enjoy some Japanese and Chinese songs (one i like is Arrogant by Xiao Zhang). okay, first of all it's an amazing movie there's no doubt in that but there are just two tiny things that are bugging me and maybe it's just because it's a DC movie and my dad basically punched it into me to be a marvel fan since I was 10. so, i did not like those shots were the characters were either falling because of a punch or jumping several hundred meters. it just looks weird and unnatural in my opinion. and the other thing... could they give her any less clothing?!?! I know it's very comic accurate but c'mon

its a good movie, i can't deny that and I should definitely give it a higher rating but I thought it was like this exciting adventure movie, which it wasn't, it is based on real events and I didn't know that starting this movie. what didnt help, was that I was really tired when I watched it. I fell asleep for a bit and even my dad fell asleep, which kinda says a lot cause he never falls asleep during a movie (only if it's really late, which it wasn't. we finished it before 11)

I have to admit I think my rating would be a lot higher if I went into this movie with a different mindset!! I feel sorry only giving it 4 stars :(

I remember, for the first one I was so excited and then i watched it and i was like "well.. that wasn't exactly how I thought it was gonna be but okay

I think since ultron, my family and i have been to the premiere/the first screening, whatever, of every marvel movie and for some reason this was monday midnight, no idea why... but we went anyways. my mom drank 2 liters of cola, we were home again at like 3am and everyone had to get up by like 7 the next day because of school and work.

Agoniser 9000, lord, ok first things first this was one of my favourite parts of the game. Carnivora is just so fucking cool. A literal circus on legs, I mean fuck I didn’t see that coming. Also Jesus that place is hard to clear. Ok but you get there with some fucking rock music as an intro, INTO THIS AREANA WITH A GIANT MURDER MACHINE WHICH IS A SKULL?? UH YES?? Literally the coolest thing ever but ok. And it’s HARD, GOOD GOD ITS HARD. Literally took me two days to beat him because I just couldn’t not it’s a lot easier because I’m like god in my main save but ok. But imagine, two days of fucking working my ass off to kill this guy. Ben & Tan - “Yes”

I think this post is bleeding ‘Yes’ to death Lemme shoot an arrow through its chest I’m so in loathe I must surpress THIS MESS THIS MESS THIS MESS.

Song analysis

Another thing why Negaworld Estonia deserves hate: I was forced to rank them below Denmark!! but like Uku, this ranking is mostly personal.

What can I even say beyond the same gospel I’ve been preaching for years? Every year Denmark pulls the same I Can’t Believe It’s Not Sweden bullshit. Every year the only road they follow is the one of least resistance. They are terrified of anything with even an ounce of originality. It’s a broken record by now and I can’t say I’m impressed. Oh a bad Of Monsters And Men clone, forgive me for not getting my knickers into a twist.  Having said that, I don’t exactly feel a BURNING hatred for *De* and *Mon* like I usually feel for my least favourites - In fact, after the cancellation it’s hard to feel anything - but I think it may be in part because I’m always partial towards cheerful songs with deceptively dark messages? “I AM READY TO GIVE LIFE ONE MORE CHANCE” say “YES” to sex, the best anti-depressant in the world, yall.

YAY SEX YAY SEX YAY SEX

The problem is: I don’t buy it. I do not believe a *SINGLE* letter of this song. Depressing/Volatile lyrics (I’m astounded nobody has thought to parodying it yet by juxtaposing “Yes” to like, the hilariously graphic deaths in found in GoT and the Witcher - Get at it!!) + cheerful vibe WORKS if presented as satire or irony, but in a more earnest setting the artifice just leaks from every pore. Anyone who is *THIS* possessive and overdramatic towards their loved one is either mentally unstable or a liar or a mentally unstable liar. 

Secondly, the pair of Ben and Tan. Look, I am aware they are friends who met on some Idol show or whatever, but Tan is 23 and Ben is 17. I swear I’m not a puritan but is this... kosher? Even if we assume for a second their narrative relationship is platonic (which it sure as hell isn’t presented as), it’s still a stretch. Let me put it this way, if it were a 17 year old girl and a 23 year old man singing *those* lyrics I doubt most people would be as okay with it. 

Also, I’ve read that people believe that TAN was the weak link in the pair for God/Drug knows what reason (sexism) and I completely disagree. Tan is good and carries the song. Ben on the other hand completely undermines any credibility “Yes” could have by... well, I mean, have a look yourself: 

Ben’s already past the Lucie Jones Zone of facial errors, and solidly encroaching towards the fluid nightmare that was Demyface. I feel bad having to trashtalk another Danish young person so soon after the world’s oldest twenty year old Leonora, but when there’s a genuine risk of a contestant morphing into John Carpenter’s The Thing, I ain’t gonna take no chances.

NF Corner

Hey, guess what, DMGP was... acceptable this year! It was... well, not *good* because Of Monsters And Men weren’t the only good act to have a *SHITTY* clone but I did love the dystopian pathos of not having an audience, and DR having to resort to hilariously fake cheer and applause stock footage to create some sort of vibe <3

and also, there were two very good songs in the line-up, which is more than what EL had, here they are:

Maja & De Sarte Sjæle - “Den eneste goth i Vejle”

A running theme in this NF season was the abundance of lovable indie entries that would normally ONLY find a place in Eesti Laul, popping up in every NF *other* than Eesti Laul. This was the Danish one. Indie rock song about growing up to be the only goth in some rural, puritan Danish village, wearing a Meat-is-Murder, BETCH, is a good way to start. Shamelessly namedropping 70s rock bands they are pilfering riffs from <3 My main gripe was the staging. You’re talking about goths, so why are your clothes and backdrop inspired by some thriftstore flowerpower movement? Anyway, wow a duo with more chemistry than De & Mon, can you believe it? I do, because they lost DMGP. 😈 (by finishing 4th in the vote allegedly. BRING THEM BACK!!!)

Jasmin Rose & Roxorloops - “Human”

 Okay, I am aware that I JUST shaded Denmark about shamelessly cloning anything that sings, but “Human” is literally a techno-ethnodance remix of Lorena’s “Tower of Babylon” and it’s SO blatant I fell out of my chair laughing the first time I heard it. And then, I had yet to deal with the hilarity of ROXORLOOPS possibly becoming the most random returnee of all times (forget Witloof Bay, Roxorloops was ALSO in the 2006 Belgian NF, where his group not only finished LAST in their heat, but also received the lowest score from ALL jurors and the audience <33333). He is SO redundant he is barely even featured in the studio track <33333 And then we got to the live of “Human” staged as an OTT Rose/Robot dichotomy, with Roxorloops of course playing the part of the ROBOT being more of a dancer than a beatboxer holy fuck this was a hilarious ride. IS THIS DENMARK I FUCKING CANNOT BELIEVE IT. Oh wait, "Human” didn’t make the top 3 YUP sounds like Denmark alright. 😈 BRING THEM BACK AS WELL!!!

Denmark 2020 vs Denmark 2021

There is currently no information published about Denmark’s plans in 2021, but I assume they will just hold DMGP again, with an invite for Ben & Tan (which seems to be the MO for countries that traditionally hold NFs).  I am however happy that “Yes” was neutered though. 😇 I don’t think it could’ve won, but its fake-cheerfulness would’ve ensnared a good chunk of casual votes and I’d rather NOT see Denmark KEiiNO themselves into a top 10 they do not deserve! Crisis averted!

I mean, even with several legit good songs in their DMGP, it was always blatantly obvious Denmark would select “Yes”. After all, it was the only Swedish song in the running.
