this took me so long to decide, but this is the first answer that felt right. it was played on a loop in an art installation/chill space called Cloud Control at EDC in 2019 (both Vegas & Orlando). events that opened a portal into a universe of love- for myself, for others, for the infinite 💜✨💫

I was in the garden today, when I pulled a daisy

And I thought, huh, its roots look weird. Let's zoom in.

Those pinkish things sure don't look like daisy roots, and indeed they are not! Those are baby orobanche, a parasitic plant lacking entirely in chlorophyll which has attached itself to the daisy's roots and was sucking out its nutrients. Here are some more:

The one on the left is what they look like when they just pop out of the ground-- kind of like pinkish asparagus. The one on the right is a true baby, glove for scale, that looks almost like a grub. 🍤

And here is the largest one I found

Chonker. Unsurprisingly, the large daisy it was next to was very dead, presumably choked out by Ms. Can't Be Bothered to Make Her Own Chlorophyll.

There are many varieties of orobanche, most of them specializing on specific plants. This one is Orobanche Minor, native to the area (Europe), and prefers pea plants and daisies, but a parasite will take an opportunity when it sees one, you know? Personally, I have a bunch of fruit trees, so while this fun plant might be native, it will be getting removed from my yard along with any tasty daisies that might lure more in.
