yknow the magazine fornax in mass effect- the one with the hanar on the cover

i was looking on the wiki and it said- it contained asari, quarians, drell, batarians, volus, and hanar (both female and male for all sepxies(except asari ofc))

and even though it said there was mostly asari in the magazine- the hanar was still the one on the cover- that was probably bc it was silly and funny and a sort of censorship…

but on in real life- usually the one on the cover page is considered like the most attractive model or whatever- the main piece that attracts people into buying a magazine is the person on the cover

so it made me think- is this hanar on the cover- a famous porn star or something? or are hanar considered a sexually attractive species? also grunt apparently owns a special edition of fornax thats only krogans which… no way they’re female krogan, right? there’s no way while in hiding they were taking pics and publishing mags… so was he looking at male krogans??

I have a third theory on why the hanar is on the cover, it's to take advantage of a legal loophole that bypasses censorship. Maybe hard cover porno magazines are only allowed to be sold in non-adult stores if their cover isn't revealing. And since the hanar never wear clothes and are naked all the time, this magazine cover bypasses censorship.

Okay, I know I should be interested in the smut aspects of it, but honestly, I'm much more interested in the cultural implications of it. Not only did human publications break into the galactic space market but streamlined into Omega? The den of free markets and lawlessness? wow, we made it guys!

And the fact it's made by humans, so you'd expect the target audience to be humans too, right? But apparently not.

Grunt purchasing a Fornax magazine could imply two things

The target audience ended up including many more species than just humans, if anything, maybe there is a hanar on the cover because humans make up the minority of its readers—only the true monster/alien fuckers stay, and those are down with the hanar nudes—while the rest of the species make up the majority. Notable readers may be elcor and krogans judging by the exclusive special edition prints. While your average normie human buys an asari magazine or something else that only features the "safe-ish" species, asari, human, the occasional quarian if they're feeling spicy.

Actually, the majority of readers are human, but Grunt is estranged from krogan culture and doesn't know where to acquire the krogan-marketed magazines. Him buying a human produced one shows how he unconsciously assimilates to human culture in virtue of being trained under Shepard and looking up to them. Fresh out of the tank, he lived in a ship with a predominantly human crew, no wonder human culture got to him first before he could learn more about his krogan roots.

Those two points can co-exist to an extent if you water them down enough to blend together. The magazine can still have a majority alien audience whilst showcasing the imprint of human culture on Grunt. To achieve that, Fornax needs to be a niche amidst the alien magazine market, but a known niche nonetheless, whilst most humans wouldn't glance twice at it.

Circling back to the hanar, there seems to be a pattern (not really only two so far) of hanar who make it big into the entertainment industry, adult or other (ex: Blasto, this blue hanar) at the steep price of total misrepresentation of the hanar. Like how Blasto carries guns akin to how bipedals do it, when hanar do not behave this way, how a lot of hanar take issue with his purposefully misleading portrayal of their people just to appeal more to the bipedal terrestrial audience (humans, asari, turians, etc)

And with how isolated the hanar are, the allure of mystery just makes people wanna know more. Blasto and other hanar actors seem to play it up a notch... or ten.

Also, since when are hanar blue? Is anyone gonna ask that or?

either blue hanar are a thing and my alternative univere self already lost their job at Fornax publications after getting cancelled for an ignorant comment, or blue hanar are NOT a thing, but it's like humans dressing up in elf ears etc.

Remember that videogame store on the Citadel in ME2? A salarian standing near it talking about this new nsfw game of a hanar and an asari. It's probably a gag from the devs about tentacle porn hentai, but it could also be a canon thing that the sexual innuendo of the hanar's many versatile tentacles, aren't lost on the rest of the galactic masses.

Leading to hanar porno magazines explicit videogames featureing them. Maybe hanar pornstars are a thing.

I wonder what the hanar get off to, do they have a preference for the drell? Maybe salarians because they're amphibian? Maybe the really sadistic ones fancy turians since their inability to swim and only sink in water, turns them on in some twisted way.

His ocean eyes raise to yours. They are humble, gentle, and vulnerable. It almost aches your heart. The way they peer into you - hell, like he's peering into your soul. Muscles in your face soften as you let him in. Let everything in.

This isn't just a fling. This isn't just because you're able to go on a suicide mission. No, you found something that you've never had before. You both found something within each other. You didn't understand what it meant to have a bondmate until this moment, until looking into these eyes.

My September Reads Ranked

I dnfd 2 books this month, so I only have a list of books I liked. I dnfd Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and A Spiral of Need by Suzanne Wright. I thought both of these were going to be 5 star reads for me, but I was wrong.

1. Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig: I loved this series with every fiber of my being. The characters we’ve had the pleasure of meeting in the first book, get together to find a missing magical artefact. In the process, Gillig blesses her readers with a tender romance and an abundance meaningful character arcs. The magic system is unique, the plot is crazy, and the writing is beautiful. It’s the best time, and the dialogue between the characters is addictive. The Shepard King series is hands down the best fantasy series I’ve read all year, and probably the best fantasy series I’ll ever read. I have the special editions (coming out this month) on preorder.

2. Half a Soul by Oliva Atwater: As a child, Dora has half her soul taken by a fairy. Both of her parents are dead, so she ends up with her bitch of an aunt and her pretty cool cousin. This takes place in the regency era in London. Dora’s pretty cool cousin is sent to London to find a husband and insists on Dora coming along, and there Dora meets a grumpy magician named Elias. Dora and Elias’s banter is a ton of fun, and their romance is endearing. The book is cozy and heartfelt. I loved it.

3. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett: Another fantasy book I loved. Emily is an eccentric professor obsessed with the folk, and Wendell Bambleby is obsessed with Emily. Together they are giving the hot version of Mary and Dick from 3rd Rock from the Sun. They are too funny together and find themselves in the craziest predicaments, and I already read the second book too. I can’t wait to read the 3rd book in Feb. of next year.

4. Brother by Ania Ahlborn: Brother is about a serial killer family that lives in the Appalachian Mountains. This shit is crazy, and it goes from bad to worse. Yk right off the bat you're not getting a happy ending. The plot is revealed through the two main characters in a compelling way, and the narration goes from following our main protag to past recollections of another character that's bat shit insane. I loved that Ahlborn's writing has an almost casual tone bc it lets you feel the normalcy the main protag, Michael, feels. He doesn't fully realize he's in a totally insane situation. It's perfect to kick off the spooky season, especially if you like reading about super dysfunctional families.

The following are Ruby Dixon books. These are all books about a romance between a human and a big, buff blue alien. They have a ton of smut.

5. The Corsair’s Bed by Ruby Dixon

7. Barbarian’s Tease by Ruby Dixon

8. Barbarian’s Beloved by Ruby Dixon

9. Barbarian’s Treasure by Ruby Dixon

10. Enticed by The Corsair by Ruby Dixon

11. Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova: I liked this book, but the time jump in the second half was jarring and didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I planned on reading House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski and Babel by R.F. Kuang in October, but I don’t feel like it. With House of Leaves I saw a lot of talk about how you read it mostly for the unique narrative, and I don’t think I’m in the head space rn to read something for that reason. Then I read a discourse about how Babel is mostly telling instead of showing, and that’s not my cup of tea. In retrospect, I think that’s the main reason I couldn’t stand Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and Red Rising by Pierce Brown (despite their popularity). I’ll read both these books eventually and give them a go, but I’m not in the mood for them.

I ordered like 10 books, and I’ll see what I end up reading.

Thanks to @continuous-spec for tagging me in this writer meme, especially as I've only just gotten back into writing again!

1. Saints and Liars: "Oh, Harry - it’s your favourite patient!" Cerys Ryder called in a sing-song voice as she clattered into Harry Carlyle’s lab just off the main medbay.

2. Through a Mirror Darkly: “Do I make you nervous?” The voice floated out of the shadows, deceptively soft, and Shepard bit back a gasp as Kaidan materialised beside her, a smirk gracing his lips as his eyes slipped down her form.

3. Everything: Today was not going to plan.

4. Distance: Gina Shepard paused outside of the Normandy's shuttle and drew in a deep, steadying breath as she waited for her team.

5. Haunted: The low hum of conversation buzzed through Tartarus as Sara entered, a conspicuous figure in her shiny blue and white Initiative armour.

6. The Naughty List: Gina Shepard watched the flames dancing in the fireplace, the fragrant smell of burning wood and the crackle and pop of the fire comforting.

7. The Interview: “Wait, wait! Hold the door!” Reyes jogged for the elevator as the door closed, cursing as it slid shut in his face and he skidded to a stop to avoid slamming into it.

8. The Charlatan's Seduction Plan: Sara hurried from the elevator and down the plushly carpeted hallway of Collective Imports, cursing the early morning traffic that had delayed her usual punctual arrival at work.

9. Dork: Reyes knew that the view from the roof of his prefab apartment was one of the best in Kadara Port, especially at night with the blanket of twinkling stars shining down.

10. The Outdoor Type: “I love camping.” The words were out of James’ mouth before he could stop them, and once they were out, there was no way to take them back.

Things I noticed: I tend to start with dialogue half of the time, my characters in a moment of action the other half, and I almost always use full names to establish my main characters.

Viv Shepard is ready to embark on yet another mission: to find and kill an Ardat-Yakshi, an asari with irresistible seductive power that gains strength by draining its partner's life energy. Thane Krios is concerned that the asari may pose a more insidious challenge to Shepard than she expects. "Shepard look away and clench her jaw. He could imagine her thoughts. Was there anything that could frighten and bewitch her more than the idea of surrendering control and power completely?"

If I did not carry on the collaboration, it was not because I did not appreciate the offer, far from it. I have periods of very strong social anxiety and every interaction becomes difficult, which is why I did not take advantage of the offers that were so generously made to me. In the end I decided to publish this story anyway, I really like the result (in Italian at least) and it seemed like the right story to translate. If someone still feels like reading it, I hope they will let me know whether it is readable or not.

Alright, starting ME2. One of my goals of this playthrough is to resist Morinth's seduction, which is particularly difficult for two reasons:

1. The final persuasion/intimidation option for the scene has one of if not the highest difficulty thresholds in the game.

2. Because of the way Paragon/Renegade works in ME2, I can't just grind my Paragon/Renegade and do Samara's loyalty mission last. The threshold gets higher as Shepard discovers more areas and more opportunities to accrue either Paragon or Renegade, so I need to accumulate Paragon fast and early by taking every possible Paragon option the game gives me and doing the quest as soon as possible. But I also can't do it before I've gathered enough Paragon because then there's no point.

I think there will be enough recruitment and story missions before I even get Samara's loyalty mission that I can pretty much do it immediately once I get it, but we'll see. Wish me luck.
