Two more awesome podfics to open the fest today! (And another to come 👀👀)!

Happy Sliggoo Sunday and happy posting period of the @caught-on-tape-fest! I have posted two of the three podfics that I have claimed! Thank you @theotherhufflepuff and @aroace-genderfluid-sheep for the tags.

ANYWAY. PODFICS!

First one is Figure It Out by @wellbelesbian, in which Keris and Trixie adopt a cat. It features a special guest! It was the first fic I finished recording, and I picked it because I saw that Alex put Keris/Trixie fics up to claim and I thought "hey, an underappreciated ship!". Also, I love cats.

The second one is namesakes by @tea-brigade, in which Simon and Baz tell their families their son's name. I love Tel, it's insane, so this was actually the first fic I claimed because I was so fucking excited for it. I like to believe that all of the Snowbaz kids in fanfics are, like, an example of the multiverse of parent!Snowbaz.

I have also claimed [REDACTED] by @[REDACTED], but I think I am going to a full rerecording of that one, because for some reason, half of the audio has some sort of weird consistent sound in the background and since I do not know how to filter out that specific sound, it will just be easier to do it all over. It's a short fic, after all.

But yeah, 2/3rd done! I mentioned in the author's notes of namesakes that I had to cut out a little gasp of Daphne. Let's preserve it here:

I re-read this one so often that I figured I might as well take a shot a re-reading it out loud for everyone else. As soon as I saw Stacy had put it on the claiming list I jumped on it!

And of course, the modding side of things - so much gratitude for organizing this podfic fest! The explosion of podfics that I've seen from this fest is just... well, it's awesome. I've been binging fanfic since posting started for this fest - something I would never be able to do, otherwise. Setting up this fest was inspired, and I also greatly appreciate the work and dedication that went into making it all come together.

Podfics are such an amazing contribution to the fandom, and I'm really glad I was able to participate at least a little. I hope everyone (including myself) continues to create podfics - not just for those who need the assistance reading, but for everyone who enjoys the listening experience!

How to sign up:

If you're claiming from the list of author-submitted fics

Have a look at the list of available fics for claiming:

-G- and T-rated fics

-All fics, including M and E ratings (creators must be 18+ to claim one of these fics)

These lists are filterable by word count, estimated length of podfic, author, ship, etc. and will only show fics that are still available to be claimed (i.e. once a fic gets claimed using the form, they will disappear from these lists).

If you're claiming from this list, all you'll need to know when the form opens is the title of the fic, your email address and your ao3 username!

2. Fill in the sign up form (one entry per fic you want to claim). To do this you need to enter your info, select whether or not you are 18+, choose 'Claim a fic from the list', and then click '+Add' to choose the fic title you're claiming from the list. Then hit Submit and lather, rinse, repeat for any additional claims.

If you're signing up with a fic that the author has given you permission for which is NOT on this list

1. Fill in the sign up form (one entry per fic you want to claim). To do this you need to enter your info, select whether or not you are 18+, choose 'Claim a fic NOT on the list that I received permission from the author to podfic', and then enter all the required fields with the fic info (Title, link, Author Name, Rating). Then hit Submit and lather, rinse, repeat for any additional claims.

Podfic #2 for the Caught On Tape Carry On Podfest! This is The Sound of Silence by aralias! This one's also for Teen and Up Audiences, with Ch1 around 28 mins and Ch2 around 21 mins! This fic is another one of my old favorites, and it was so much fun editing it all up!

Once again I need to seriously thank the mods for this fest! They've all been SO supportive and kind and made me feel so much closer to a fandom I've cherished so much for the past two years but was always too scared to be more than a lurker in! I was so worried about learning to make podfics and exposing my voice to internet strangers, and yet the reception I got for my first podfic was completely mind-blowing and heart-melting, and I'm so grateful to all the amazing people in this fandom! This would not have been possible without all of them, but the mods super duper especially!!

I've got one last fic on the way that I'm gonna have to really go crunch time on, but for now enjoy listening to The Sound of Silence by aralias!

This list is much shorter than my list of fics written in 2022, but my fics last year were much shorter. Also, this word count is deceptive, because I wrote about 22k of Depth of Reason last year and about 20k of How to Avoid a Scandal last year as well. But! My writing goals this year were to finish these two WIPs and not take on any other projects until they were finished and I very nearly did that! Took on two projects (and more below), but I still finished these before the year finished, so pretty good!

About 83k. Last year was more like 120k.

Themes:

Finishing long works apparently! One was for my 2022 COBB and the other for my 2022 CORB. Even though these were started last year, they are the longest things I wrote since my first fic (49k) back in the second half of 2021.

Also, trying new things! Writing sci-if and recording a podfic felt very outside my wheelhouse at the time, but ultimately, I’m glad I went for it.

I met up with fandom friends while on a trip this past summer. Making personalized friendship bracelets as gifts, doing fic readings and crafts, and putting on our own Lady Ruth style tea party were some of my fave moments <3

I did a book club style reread of some of my fave fics with friends. I hope we do a few more in 2024!

It’s safe to say I engaged with this fandom everyday of 2023. I might get quiet on the main Discord server or Tumblr, but I’m certain I read, reblogged, wrote, DMd or otherwise participated in some way, shape or form throughout the entirety of the year.

Goals for 2024:

Read more fic! This fandom has such a wealth of works, my TBR list is a mile long and isn’t organized. I’d like to formally rework my AO3 bookmarks to exclusively show recs and either utilize the Marked for Later function or make a spreadsheet or something to better organize a proper TBR list so i don’t lose track of what I want to read next. Currently, having a dozen tabs open on my phone and another dozen on my iPad doesn’t really work well. If anyone has a brilliant system you’d suggest, please enlighten me!

I also want to read all of my physical canon books this year. I’ve only ever listened to the audiobooks! I’m currently reading my anniversary edition of Fangirl. (I think this is the prettiest book I’ve ever owned.) Up next, the Fangirl Manga, followed by the trilogy and Snow for Christmas.

More fandom meet ups! Already planning for June…

I don’t have any writing plans currently, so we shall see if/what I decide to create. I have a few ideas rolling around in my head, but nothing I’ve felt urged to put down in words. I’m sure I’ll write something, I just don’t know what it’ll be yet.

ATTN CARRY ON FIC WRITERS: Caught on Tape Podfest Fic Submissions Now Open Until August 31

Calling all CO fandom writers! Have you always wished to have your work podficced for the world to hear? Well, then this post is for you!

Step one of podfic'ing is to get the fic author's permission to podfic their story. To make it even easier for potential podfic'ers in this fest to do that, we're encouraging all of our CO fandom writers to submit a list of fics that you give permission to have podficced (or even better, really WANT to have podficced) for the fest. (What IS the fest you ask? Read about it here.)

This doesn't necessarily mean your fic will be chosen, just that participants in the fest have permission to do so if they want to. And we're setting up a system to keep track of which fics have been claimed to be podficced for the fest, so we can limit duplication (more cake is GREAT, but more variety of fics to listen to is ALSO GREAT and our goal).

We've set up a few ways authors can make it known which fics they'd love to see podficced:

Fic-by-fic, by completing this form for each fic you want to submit! The form is open now, and will remain open through August 31st.

Provide blanket permission (or a link to all the fics you want to give permission for) by filling in this form (also open through August 31st) to have them imported in to the podfic prompts list for the fest. Note that we would ideally want you to also put a permission statement on your AO3 profile in this case, and we even found this handy tool that will help you generate the statement. (Why not have your permission endure?)

Don't submit anything, but just go ahead and put a permission statement on your AO3 account, and see what happens. A simple a statement on your AO3 that says you're open to requests from podfic creators might be all you're up for, and more than enough to leave the door open.

We'll close the submission forms right before we open up claiming/creator sign up on September 1st. More details on how podfic creator sign-up will work can be found in the fest rules, and you can check out the full schedule here.
