underrated college tip: use a reference management software!
i use zotero (but i’m sure other ones are great too). it’s free and has been working great so far. it’s both a software and a chrome plug in, so if i’m reading a journal article/etc i use the chrome plugin to save the reference to one of my folders. then in the software i can search for references either by tags that i add or by key words. usually zotero saves the full text pdf so i can access that as well.
and! and my favorite thing is that in ms word, i can automatically add in-text citations with zotero. i can choose the style (MLA,APA, Chicago, etc) and if i re-order my in text citations it will automatically re-order my bibliography
i cannot overstate how game changing this is when i need to write a lot of reports and cite a bunch of sources

Sidenote. That is a slightly oversimplified explanation of PageRank. If you prefer not to wait, you can check manually. If you only recently submitted this, then that may not yet be the case. Once again, that only works if Google has already attempted to crawl the URLs in your sitemap. Go to the “Coverage” report and look for “Submitted URL blocked by robots.txt” errors. If you’ve submitted your sitemap via Google Search Console, it should alert you about issues related to this. Google can’t crawl URLs blocked in your robots.txt file, which usually results in them not showing up in search results. This instructs search engines where they can and can’t go on your website. Most websites have something called a robots.txt file. You’re blocking search engines from crawling your pages Remove “noindex” tags from any pages that shouldn’t have them. free textbooks+books+articles websites
libgen.is - probably the best website for everything, if you cant find it here then its going to be difficult to find elsewhere. there are multiple links for each book so broken links aren’t a problem.
sci-hub - great for journals and anything academic, just paste in the doi and you'll get the full pdf!
pdfdrive - quality of textbooks (and fiction/ non-fiction) vary but there are quite a lot and uploads are frequent
z-library - for both books and articles (you will need an account for more than 5 downloads or you can just use a vpn)
planetebook - veerryy high quality classic literature ebooks! perfect for lit students who may need an extra copy for annotating or whatever
project gutenberg - mostly fiction and also lots of literature books
manybooks.net - similar to project gutenberg, lots of fiction (but you need an account which is free) 
openstax - high quality high school and college textbooks on social sciences, science, math, humanities, business etc. perfect if you are trying to learn a subject by yourself
chrome extensions
mindful - replaces new tab in chrome and functions as a notepad! you can create a to-list, take notes quickly or use it for writing! it syncs automatically so don't worry about losing anything
grammarly - i use both the extension and website; the extension for catching mistakes when writing and the web app for checking scripts (because it gives the speaking time!) you can also store your writing in grammarly
reader view - increases readability of websites, very minimalistic and  customisable (color of background, font, size etc). a life saver when you have to spent hours on your computer
some other extensions that may be useful: forest (mobile app or extension) to stay focused by planting trees, momentum (extension) replaces new tab with an inspirational photo + to-do list , cold turkey (desktop app) to lock certain websites and applications, 
making lecture notes
onenote - i like how you can have notebooks > sections > pages > which helps with organisation (eg one notebook for each subject) you can also take notes anywhere on the page and drag things around. however, it takes up space in your one drive (which is 5gb)
google docs - google docs/slides don’t take up space in your drive (which is 15gb) and its great for collaboration. 
citation
citation machine - it can automatically generate citations using doi/ isbn/ title in any style you want! i prefer this to citation managers because its easy to check the details and see if anything is missing/ incorrect
mendeley - yes its quick and convenient but sometimes information is missing from the entry so i need to do it manually anyways:/
other popular citation managers are endnote and zotero, and here is a guide comparing the citation managers based on different needs of the user.
writing
blankslate.io and calmlywriter are both online writing applications that are very minimalistic. you can save your writing as .pdf or .docx or .txt. perfect for writers!

Yes, definitely! I'll mostly provide links to other resources - I've found that a big part of learning how to do lit reviews is knowing that certain things exist and then figuring out how to do those things when you need them. If anyone else wants to add info or clarifications to this post, please feel free to do so!
First of all, I'd recommend using a citation manager to keep track of papers. I use Mendeley, but I've heard Zotero is good too. From what I understand, unless you're looking for a citation manager with specific features (could be worth googling which one is best suited to your discipline), the best one to use is the one you are comfortable using/are already using.
Mendeley has guides here on how to use their program.
I added the Google Chrome browser extension so I can save papers to folders as I'm searching. Mendeley is free, you can save papers and references to specific folders, change the citation style (always double-check tho b/c it pulls whatever info it can find), and I can log into my account on other computers. When you do save papers, I always like to check that the citations are formatted properly with all the correct info, otherwise, I find myself going back later to find a piece of info that was missed which can take up a lot of time when you have many references. As well, you can highlight text and add comments to pdfs in Mendeley which is super useful!

I'll add a few specific things I learned that have made my life easier. I'd recommend checking out the resources I mentioned for specific instructions on how to do these things.
Learn how to use Boolean operators. I knew how to use AND and OR in my searches but there's so much more you can do (I’m still learning so I’m not going to elaborate too much on this, but there are some really good resources out there).
If you use any of the EBSCO databases (I usually use PsycInfo for example), there's a thesaurus of terms for each database (check at the top of the page). This makes it so much easier to see exactly how things are categorized in the database.
If you find a good/relevant paper, check out the studies they cited and who cited their paper. I find using Google Scholar, searching for the paper, and then clicking "cited by" to be the easiest way to do this. This is especially useful if you're trying to identify a knowledge gap.
Make an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of papers (do this as you go). I always have columns for the title, authors, year, and abstract (makes it easier to find the paper you're looking for later). Beyond this, it depends on how detailed you want to be. You could have just one column where you type out a few notes about each study. Alternatively, you could have columns for things such as population studied, experimental design, specific methods/techniques, if they included specific variables, a summary of the main results, etc. This really depends on the focus of your lit review, but it’s always better to include more info than you need rather than adding info later.
It’s also useful to keep track of which search terms you’re using. If you go back to searching for papers another day, you might forget exactly what you searched for already. You can include the search terms in your spreadsheet or just create a separate document.
It takes practice to figure out the right search terms/keywords. You don't want to go too narrow, but searching broadly may yield way more results than you need (or might be irrelevant). It can be helpful to talk to someone else in your lab/field about what keywords to use in your search.

Sleep
Okay listen - I know what you’re thinking. College students don’t sleep, though! And guess what? That’s absolutely true. I’ve had two cups of coffee today already and it’s only noon, but you need to learn how to sleep enough. Your body has limits and you need to learn what those are. I have had multiple friends who have fainted from not sleeping enough and guess what? They don’t perform better on tests that way. Figure out how many hours of sleep you need to get to function well. For me it’s about 5-7 hours per night during the week and about 7-8 hours per night on weekends (and I don’t have Friday class so Thursday nights count as weekends for me). This is probably the limit for keeping yourself healthy enough to function and I subsist off of coffee. If you don’t sleep you are going to get sick and your papers are going to be incoherent and you are going to gain weight from over eating. So just put down that paper, get your 6 hours and start up again in the morning. For majors that are reading based (i.e. English, History, Philosophy, Classics, etc) it is so important to get enough sleep so that you can actually comprehend your readings!
Plan
Your planner does not have to be beautiful, covered with script handwriting and cute small artist stickers to be worth putting time into (more power to you if yours is though — that’s a whole mood). I used Hobinichi Cousin planner to plan my day—chores, homework, and meals—but I also use iCal and an app called Things. My freshman year I thought that just having a paper planner would be fine but it did NOT work out for me. I was always late/forgetting meetings and running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Once I downloaded Things (for my assignments) and inputted work, social events, and when I’m really busy sleep/meals into iCal, I started getting better grades. Take 2 hours to plan. Seriously even if you have 372 things to get done by tomorrow, if you plan and make a linear list of the things you need to get done they will get done better and faster.
Things is a paid app. $10 for phone, $50 for Mac. It’s a bit of an investment for both but I have used it every single day for the past 2 years.
Socialize
Just me here with your local reminder that socialize does not mean you have to party. Let me tell you something, I haven’t gone to a party this entire year (it’s second semester) and I feel completely content about it. I am not saying that going to parties is bad. A lot of people have a ton of fun doing that, but let me tell you something—your social life cannot subsist off of parties alone. Invite people to brunch, make friends with the people in your classes by literally just talking to them (!!!), go on coffee dates with your friends as much as you can, take midnight ice cream runs, 1 am fried chicken runs, 9 pm boba study breaks, invite people over to make cookies, go to the cinema. Deep conversations and long talks will sometimes distract you from your work and guess what? That’s okay. That’s an important part of college too. Don’t shut yourself up in your room all day studying every day of the week. You are going to burn out. You need your friends and they need you!
Work smarter and harder
I cannot say this enough—utilize your resources! Go to office hours. It will literally save you to have a relationship with your professor. Not only are you going to get letters of recommendation, extensions when you really need them, and helpful tips—you can have amazing conversation and insight about grad school, research, and jobs. Go to the library. Not only are there a million books for your research project all grouped in the same section, but there are librarians who can help you find more resources with less effort. Use your databases, but also your own school’s archives. There is a reason we save so many books and newspapers. Also libraries are the absolute best place to study. This year I have tended to go to the most social floor because it keeps me awake and it reminds me that I have other people around me working late as well. Use apps. I’m saying this right now—DOWNLOAD ZOTERO. It will save you. It is an app and a google chrome extension which saves your sources in a database and then generates perfect citations/footnotes for your papers. It is the best thing of my life. Use google drive and keep your documents in organized folders. Organized virtual work is AS important as physical work. Also put some time into your LinkedIn ASAP—the sooner you do it, the easier it will be to keep it up to date.
Take care of yourself
Just be smart about your time and your mental health. Both of those I struggle with every day, but take solace in the fact that other people are going through it too. College is an amazing opportunity and even when it feels completely overwhelming it is still an extremely privileged position to be in. Do why you can to make yourself better, be there for the people who need you, grind on your papers and projects and research. At the end of the day your projects/papers are only going to be as good as your individual capacity allows them to be. Sometimes sleeping an extra hour is as beneficial as an extra hour of studying. Figure out what you need by making mistakes and forgive yourself! We are all just trying to make our way though.

New computer!
What do you do when you first get a new computer?
I am a Windows user and I have been customizing my setup* since I was a teen.
It has been a few years (yes, lucky me!) since I have had a new PC, so it took a bit of time to remember everything, but these are the absolute FIRST things that I do.
Keyboards! Install English-International Keyboard - it allows accents to be picked up by simply using the apostrophe and whatever this is >> ` Install Khmer Keyboard - my dad worked on this project and I need to continually work on my Khmer.
Display settings :) I’m probably legally blind, so I need to make everything larger (300% larger on this PC it seems) right away so that I'm not squinting and creating a headache (and wrinkles!).  That being said, I like to have many shortcuts on my taskbar so I then need to go through and find the setting to keep the task bar icons small.
Protection (very important) I have been using Avira, a German anti-virus software for some time now and I quite like it. I install this as soon as possible so that I can get syncing with external drives (it’s hard, but I resist the temptation to plug anything into a new computer until this step is done!)
File name extensions and hidden files Back in the days of slow downloads, viruses galore file transfer via USB, I remember nearly getting compromised by strange .exe files. I quickly learned to display the file name extensions and hidden files so that I know exactly what I am copying over and don’t get tricked into double clicking a dangerous file due it it’s sneaky name or icon.
Syncing and un-syncing I have been a happy user of Dropbox for sometime now. Joined in college with their great Space Race marketing campaign and they got me hooked. It’s still my favorite sync-to-cloud software. So I need to download that. However, since my organization stopped subscribing to Dropbox Business, I ran out of space and also complement my syncing needs with Google, so I download Backup & Sync from Google as well. Finally, with two sync-to-cloud accounts, I think I have enough so I then also need to go through and disable OneDrive, which seems to be set up to run automatically (clever... took Microsoft some time to catch up here, but now I fear they and Google will destroy Dropbox... sad!). They were very sneaky and synced my “Documents” folder immediately. So I had to bypass their Documents shortcut to find my true “Documents” folder on my hard drive (how conservative am I?). Wait, that’s not it. After trying and failing numerous times to make this happen - I found out that Microsoft actually hardcoded these OneDrive shortcuts into the registry! Can you imagine? So I had to actually manually edit the registry to make this happen. While I was at it, I also added Google Drive to the shortcuts using this nifty registry editing trick. Oh well, at least it promtped me to make a backup of the registry.
Hardware check (thanks Sarah Dietchy) To check that my hardware was properly set up (graphics card), I opened up Device Manager and asked him to “Scan for Hardware Changes” while playing a video from Youtube (oh my goodness, my speakers are great and Billie Eilish’s new song is great!). I ran Task Manager and double checked for activity on the second GPU in the Performance tab. This took me some time and is part of the reason I’m documenting this here -- I learned something new today and will use these quick steps to make sure I’m seeing activity here.
Music!  Instead of playing Billie Eillish on repeat on Youtube, my next step is to download Spotify.
Browsers  And now that the urgent stuff is out of the way, I also take the time to download some of my preferred browsers. My current favorite one is Brave, but I’ll get around to downloading Chrome (and perhaps Firefox) later. Trying not to clog the new computer straight away.
Connectivity And in today’s age, I’ll need Telegram (and perhaps WhatApp) installed on the PC too. It’s my favorite way to send myself files and messages currently (previously, I used Evernote... I’ll get around to downloading that later, as well.)

I use this free tool to backup my files and transfer the files between computers: https://allwaysync.com/. I plan to synchronize and copy over my fonts and files.
I made a copy of my Zotero library (alllll of the research articles I have read or plan to read) using the trick outlined here: https://remembereverything.org/syncing-zotero-with-dropbox-and-several-computers/ I use this option instead of Zotero’s amazing service because I am already on a family plan for extra space for my GMail and Google FIles (cheaper than Dropbox). Zotero  |  A fantastic reference manager that lets you save references from websites with the click of a button. Great for organizing research and searching through research.
Mendeley  |  Similar to Zotero, a great reference manager, particularly favored in the sciences.

iAnnotate  |  One of the best apps for annotating PDFs on a tablet. I use this regularly to read journal articles. It also syncs with Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
Adobe Acrobat  |  Adobe has stepped up to gain some of the tablet market gained by iAnnotate. The new annotation features on the free version are quite impressive.
ZotFile  |  The savior of my PhD. ZotFile is a Zotero plugin that extracts your annotations from your marked up PDF documents. If you highlight text in iAnnotate or Adobe Acrobat, ZotFile extracts it and adds the notes to the bibliographic record in your reference manager, making them fully searchable. Never read an article twice.
Data Backup
Dropbox  |  An independent cloud storage device that syncs across all your devices.
Google Drive |  Google’s Dropbox alternative. You can directly save your email attachments to Google Drive.
iCloud  |  In addition to backing up all of your research, if you have an iPhone it will automatically back up all of the photos you’ve been taking in the library all day.
Task/Project Management
Trello  |  A great project management tool using the kanban method, often implemented with the Getting Things Done productivity hack. It’s great for collaboration and visualizing your progress.
Slack  |  Slack is a messaging app for teams. Instead of using email, it keeps all of your project messages and notes in one place.
Bullet Journal  |  Ok, this isn’t an app. It’s an old-fashioned notebook. But it’s a great analog system of keeping track of your life, allowing for constant evaluation of what you spend time on. Read Laura’s recent post on getting started. I’ve been doing it about two weeks now and am loving it.
Writing
Scrivener  |  A great text editor that is perfect for writing chapter drafts. It allows for shuffling around bits and pieces until your draft is in its final form. Then it can be easily exported into Microsoft Word.
Grammarly  |  Think Microsoft Word grammar check on steroids. Grammarly is a plugin that makes your writing easy to read and mistake free (and helped with this post!).
Travel Planning
Skyscanner  |  One of the best websites/apps for finding a cheap flight. You can also search for prices within an entire month or find the cheapest month to travel.
Kayak  |  Another great website for finding air tickets. The best feature: the ability to use a flexible search, which searches the days near your selected dates for the best price.
Hopper  |  A great app that tells you if your plane ticket is a good deal. It shows you the best days to fly to your destination and the best day to buy a ticket for that specified route.
Airbnb  |  If you are going on a short research trip, but a bit longer than you’re willing to stay in a hostel, Airbnb is your best option. You can get a nice place for a great price, meet some locals, and learn about the city.
GateGuru  |  Long layover in an airport? GateGuru will show you all the restaurants and shops in the terminal.
Google Trips | A great new app from Google that will automatically collect your travel details from your emails and allow you to download maps for offline use.

TweetDeck  |  Twitter’s user interface for its advanced users. Manage multiple Twitter feeds in one place, schedule tweets, follow hashtags, and watch it update in real time.
Nuzzel  |  Link your Twitter account (or others) to Nuzzel and it will provide you with a daily digest of the most popular news stories from your Twitter feed.

Today marks the official launch of Unpaywall, a web browser extension that links users directly to free full-text versions of research articles. Heather Piwowar and Jason Priem of Impactstory, the team behind Unpaywall, report on the successful pre-release phase, and explain how two decades of investment, a slew of new tools, and a flurry of new government mandates have helped build a powerful momentum behind green open access.
Today we’re launching a new tool to help people read research literature, instead of getting stuck behind paywalls. It’s an extension for Chrome and Firefox that links you to free full-text as you browse research articles. Hit a paywall? No problem: click the green tab and read it free!
The extension is called Unpaywall, and it’s powered by an open index of more than ten million legally-uploaded, open access resources. Reports from our pre-release are great: “Unpaywall found a full-text copy 53% of the time,” reports librarian, Lydia Thorne. Fisheries researcher Lachlan Fetterplace used Unpaywall to find “about 60% of the articles I tested. This one is a great tool and I suspect it will only get better.” And indeed it has! We’re now getting full-text on 85% of 2016’s most-covered research papers.
Unpaywall doesn’t just help researchers, but also people outside academia who don’t enjoy the expensive subscription benefits of institutional libraries. “As someone who runs a non-profit organisation in a developing country this extension is GOLD!” says Nikita Shiel-Rolle. It helps journalists, high school students, practitioners, and, crucially, policymakers, who don’t usually have subscription access to the fact-based research literature. There has never been a time when unlocking facts has been so important. So we’re thrilled that more than 10,000 people from 143 countries have installed the extension already.
The best part is it’s powered by fully legal, free, open access uploads by the authors themselves. More and more funders and universities are requiring authors to upload copies of their papers to institutional and subject repositories. This has created a deep resource of legal open access papers, ripe for building upon.
In fact, a few weeks ago David Prosser, executive director of Research Libraries UK, tweeted:

We love this observation, and not just because two of the three projects he mentioned are from Impactstory. We love it because we agree: Green OA infrastructure is at a tipping point where two decades of investment, a slew of new tools, and a flurry of new government mandates is about to make Green OA the scholarly publishing game-changer.
A lot of folks have suggested that Sci-Hub is scholarly publishing’s “Napster moment”, where the internet finally disrupts a very resilient, profitable niche market. That’s probably true. But like the music industry shut down Napster, Elsevier will likely be able to shut down Sci-Hub. They’ve got both the money and the legal (if not necessarily the moral) high ground and that’s a tough combo to beat.
But the future is what comes after Napster. It’s in the iTunes and the Spotifys of scholarly communications. We are at this open access inflection point.
This month is a great time to appreciate this; there’s amazing OA news everywhere you look:
Over the next few years, we’re going to see an explosion in the amount of research available openly, as government mandates in the US, UK, Europe, and beyond take force. As that happens, the raw material is there to build completely new ways of searching, sharing, and accessing the research literature.
We think Unpaywall is a really powerful example: when there’s a big “Get It Free” button next to the “Pay Money” button on publisher pages, it starts to look like the game is changing. And it is changing. Unpaywall is just the beginning of the amazing open access future we’re going to see. We can’t wait!

Your favorite apps
I could probably go on, and on, and on about this, but I won’t, because this is a favorites list, and so I’ll limit myself to - say, five! Ugh, this is gonna be tough...
i. Habitica - A favorite of many, I’d wager! This is a productivity tracking app disguised as a cute little pixelated RPG. You make old-fashioned to-do lists, tasks that you need to perform every day, and habits that you can control more freely. It’s really, really neat, and provides extra incentive to tick off those tasks by stealing hit-points from your character if you don’t, and giving you gold if you do. Check it out if you haven’t already, it’s super useful. (Let me know if you’d like a more detailed explanation of the app! There are tons of features like guilds, parties, and quests, all to help you stay on track.)
ii. Forest - Also a lovely little app, although not free. Plant a little tree on a timer, and don’t touch your phone before time is up, or the little plant that put all its trust in you will wither and die! It’s tragic, really, I feel so bad when I accidentally use my phone. You can still use the browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox if you like, if you don’t want to pay the two bucks it costs, although you won’t be able to see your entire little productivity-garden using just those.
iii. Kanji Teacher - Hey, Japanese langblrs, this one is for you! It’s a 100% free, regularly updated and maintained, app to help you memorize all the JLPT kanji, and kana, too! Practice readings like a cute little multiple-choice game, and write on the screen to have the app correct you if you’re doing it wrong. Easy way to get some muscle-memory repetition in on your shaky bus-commute where pen and paper is hopeless. If you haven’t got it already, get it. (Might do a little walk-through of this, too...)
iv. Lumosity - A fun brain-training app featuring 3 free games a day (5 if you subscribe, but that is in my opinion absolutely not needed) to help you train things like memory, reaction time, problem solving skills, and logical thinking in general. It takes a maximum of 7 minutes to go through the games, so I try to do it at least every other day. I like to think it helps me be more efficient in general.
v. Zotero - Strictly speaking not an app, but oh my god, it is so useful! Zotero is a citation manager that integrates itself in your browser and text processing software - I believe they even cover LibreOffice! A little tricky to figure out at first, but once you know how to add files to your library, create folders, and create the bibliography in your document, I swear, it will save you so much time and pain. Get a citation manager now.
That’s all, folks! I strongly suggest you go check all of these out; I use them all daily and I honestly don’t know where I’d be without them.

Google Translate adds new languages In a Google blog post, author Isaac Caswell, a Software Engineer for Google Translate, announces five new languages now available on the Google Translate product:  Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur.    Both text and website translation is available.  This brings the total number of languages supported by Google Translate up to an impressive 108 languages. Teaching in Higher Ed Podcast Recommendation We’ve talked several time about Bonnie Stachowiak and her Teaching in Higher Ed blog & podcast.  She reached her millionth download recently and Ed Tech included her and her podcast as one of the top 30 Higher Education IT Influencers.  If you haven’t found her yet, check out this sample post where she identifies her top 19 episodes of 2019. Trello Tips The systems engineering librarian in me was drawn to this article on the Trello blog: The Kaban Way: How to visualize progress and data in Trello. The Kaban Method was a Japanese technique first developed for streamlining Toyota Production.  It was developed by Taiichi Ohno and is one of several lean processing system techniques still used in businesses today who want to look at their processes in a new way in order to develop some productivity improvements.  Pairing this technique with Trello makes a lot of sense to me, so I was pleased to see this how-to get started article that I could share with all of you. LaTeX / writing workflow
This is probably the worst way to do this, but it’s a way. 
For short things where I can remember all the references off the top of my head I just go straight ahead with a google doc. 
I keep all my articles and all my books in separate folders on my hard drive. I manually edit the titles in as: 
[name] [year] [short article title]

For things which require a bit more heavy lifting, I write in latex/biblatex with sublimetext as my main editing tool. 
I manually add biblatex formatted entries for each thing I finish reading in a master reading list .bib file. Rather than writing them from scratch (forgetting a comma or using an improper space-equivalent symbol will break your whole LaTeX document and is hard to trace down because of the language’s notoriously unhelpful error management system) I use the chrome google scholar to see if scholar has a pre-generated entry that’s usable (there usually is). I also use a Bibtex entry generator button in case I want to add a webpage to the bib file.

I have sublime text 3 with the LaTeXtools, wordcount and autosave plugins. I think I used this setup guide to help get a sense of what was going on, but I may be wrong. You probably want to use the Sumatra PDF reader, it behaves nicely with continuously changing pdfs like the ones you’ll be making with this setup.  
I use the following code to implement my preferred reference format, the dreaded Chicago (Author Date):

(this was a trip and a half to figure out, savor it). To fellow humanities-centric folks who for some reason aren’t using markdown or whatever slick thing kids use these days: hello. 
In multifile documents I use the following Sublime trick to point any subfile to the root for compiling, my root is usually called main.tex
%!TEX root = main.tex
you’ll have to use biber and biblatex in your compile chain. 
LaTeXtools has a nice autocomplete function I rely on extensively. Eventually I’ll figure out how to change the color scheme to something I like but in the meantime this is fine.

I use the google drive sync desktop client to continuously backup / version my LaTeX projects as they become ridiculously unreadable grow, as well as my book/article folders. 
This setup takes about a half a second to open on a win10 laptop w 8gb of ram. It doesn’t crash. It doesn’t loose my work. It’s super easy to incorporate / take out chunks of texts as I get a better sense of what I write. It looks decent, too:

I would like to figure out a better way to manage my quotes than piling them in a draft sub-chapter, but this a lot better than rambling through thousands of annotated pdfs.

I use Zotero now. I absolutely despise the way it organizes a horrendous database of nested and cryptically named subfolders, so I use the zotfile plugin to arrange all my pdfs in a library folder which contains all my pdfs. I have a custom rule to rename each thing I add with the following format: [First author last name] [year] [title of paper truncated to 60 characters]
I am learning to use the BetterBibTex plugin for Zotero as well. For a discussion of what I am hoping to do with it, please see this zotero forum thread.
For my dissertation, my workflow has been:
1. sources get added to my zotero database. I don’t use tags. I have started to make reading lists and topic collections. For web pages I save and link a pdf print of the page - the caption option for the chrome plugin exporter seems to be trash.
2. write in LaTeX. I need to play with BetterBibTex to generate the proper bibliography bib file I need to quote things using SublimeText’s autocomplete function as described above. I’ve also been playing with the auto-updating pdf renderer in VisualStudioCode, but it’s a RAM hog and it takes forever to boot.  
3. build the file, graduate.
As mentioned above, for shorter papers or book chapters, I use Google Docs. This is especially true when I expect to work with an editor that’s attached to .docx format files or wants to use the “track changes” function in word, or if I need to collaborate with multiple co-authors on a paper. For this the workflow is simpler.Since I don’t expect more than 30-50 sources, I don’t really worry about citations until the draft is done:
1. I write the first draft, filling in citations from memory or just double checking the year and page number.
2. When I’m happy with the draft I make a Zotero collection with the corresponding references. There is a “create bibliography from collection” option when right-clicking a collection, so I use that to export the bib with the format I need and paste it straight into the google doc.
One day I’ll figure out why the zotero plugin for google docs is absolutely useless and seems to crash instantly but I probably need to graduate first.
More generally: 
I don't really write notes and I even less regularly use the few notes I do write. I do however tend to collect quotes, usually in a google doc. Google Drive's search function is nice in the sense that it indexes all the text contained in documents, so I search there when I can't remember where something is. 
I also write in my own index in the beginning of books I read with page numbers for everything I like and a key word for why I liked it - not digital, but as long as I remember the book I can just look at the first page and find what I need. 
If I am reading something digitally or have a library book I have been attempting to use the acrobat pdf reader since it's the most robust highlight/comment tool, but I truly dislike its GUI, slowness and buginess. 
If there is a truly dense yet worthwhile article I make diagrams of their logical flow and main ideas, e.g. this chapter I truly dislike in 1000 plateaus (Deleuze and Guattari):

Regardless, I don't really consult these quotes, diagrams/summaries or indexes until I have a draft written or if the paper is explicitly a response or commentary to one or a few articles (in which case I'll have written out an idea diagram for each of those, see the George Lewis paper I posted here). 
As mentioned above too, drafts are usually written from memory, because a quote manager like I would like to use does not exist as far as I know and I have not had the chance to build one yet (see that forum thread).
