#Zombies Battle Army squad

Ila Wraithcloak (not my version Illic Nightspear, because fuck no I'm not spending 100 dollars for an Out of Print Resin Model) and her rangers had been waiting for over 10 hours when the first shot was fired.

In the chaos of the Tyranid invasion of the Loyolis Sector, other Xenos come out to make their moves. Deep in the heart of Death World Zan, an abandoned, top-secret imperium base is uncovered by Ila and the rangers of the Wraithstorm. Normally, this wouldn't mean much. However, not every set of imperial ruins seems to be set up to study an Eldar Webway... And not every ancient Webway hasn Drukari poking around it either. The Rangers called it in, and set up shop.

Both armies began to draw up battle lines. The light skirmishers of both Eldar and Dark Eldar hid behind the rusted ruins, while larger threats would soon be arriving. The 1500 point battle was set to begin.

The first Wraithstorm turn proved uninteresting (Because we both deployed very scared of the others dark/bright lances). Some light movements, as the Wraith Walkers attempted to move into position. The left walker succeeds, popping a Tallos! But now, the Eldar were in the sights of their Drukari cousins.

The Dark Eldar Advance! The Battle Shocked Talos was quickly able to avenge his fallen squad mate, and the Eldar Center of Wraithblades was soon met by the Drukari Flyers and Bikes. In the chaos of the charge, a Dark Eldar Sniper was able to pop off a shot from his raider directly into the Farseer! Who now has one wound and sniper hunting for him. A quiet turn 1 would be met by a thunderous turn 2.

Turn 2 saw fighting across the bored. The left flank saw the destroyed Wraith Walker replaced by 2 Wraithlords, late to the party but ready to assist. While one charged into melee, the other hung back, to send missiles into the exposed infantry holding Dark Eldar Objectives. With the center (and Webway gate) decidedly in Wraithstorm Hands, the Dark Eldar has no choice but to launch their melee units into a brawl. The bikes charge, and the raider gets ready to drop the Rakks inside.

As Ghost met Zombie, the two leaders clashed (I used my CP for precision on my staff, his homoculus has em naturally), leaving both with a single HP! The Wraithblades loose a lot of bite without the Spiritseer to guide them.

To make things worse, turn 3 saw the third, deep striking Raider make it behind Wraithstorm lines. However, the Farseer, with but a single wound, was able to make sure the Brightlance shot was able to go where it needed! The raider was crumpled almost instantly, and the Witches inside were unable to withstand the shurikan catapult fire.

Meanwhile, the Wraithlords had rolled like gods, allowing them to clean up the left flank with little trouble.

Turns 3 and 4 were close, but by the end, the Dark Eldar were on the run. Their Raiders and Venoms trashed, their flanks broken, the Drukari had no choice but to abandon their prize. The Eldar of Craftworld Deux Mach would carry the day. Ila Wraithcloak looked over the battlefield, filled with Dark Eldar scrap and corpses. She reloaded Voidbringer. All according the Seers.

OPEN VERSES

Stone Mind; Glass Heart.

This is the main canon verse, taking place from the time Armin joins the survey corps onward. Age range 15-19. In the short span of four years, Armin makes his mark as a valuable asset to his squad with his strategical mind and logical thinking. He often assists in the formation of plans that lead the survey corps to victory and prevent the untimely death(s) of his friends many times over. As time moves on, Armin is given a second chance at life after a hard fought battle in his hometown of Shinganshina when he's chosen to inherit the power of the colossal titan. Although he does not believe this was the correct choice, Armin takes this new responsibility very seriously, and becomes a powerful weapon against their enemies in Marley, even when it pains him to do so. By the end of the war, Armin's efforts are rewarded with the title of 15th Commander, when 14th Commander Hange Zoe sacrifices herself and passes the title on to him.

Trainee Verse (tba)

A canon verse for Armin's time spent in the 104th trainees squad. Age range 12-15. After the death of his grandfather, Armin officially decides to join the military alongside his friends in the hopes of bringing change to a government directly responsible for the deaths of his parents, grandfather, and countless others, and the chance to finally explore the outside world. Although he is far from the strongest, his bright mind and unwavering determination catch the eye of his higher ups, and eventually prove enough to get him through to graduation.

Post Rumbling Verse (tba)

A post canon verse for events that take place after the rumbling. Age range 19-22 and beyond. War changes people, and Armin is no exception. With his dreams of exploring the outside world quite literally crushed beneath the feet of an army of titans, Armin has been left with more responsibilities than freedom at the end of it all. Commander of the last remnants of the survey corps. Ambassador of peace. The hero who killed Eren Jaeger. Enemy number one in the eyes of the newly formed Jaegerist faction of Paradis. Perhaps worst of all, he's been left to deal with all of these things while he mourns the death of his childhood best friend. Armin is still Armin. Will always be Armin. But the light in his eyes that once shone so brightly has dwindled to a dull glow at best most days, dimmed by trauma and melancholy. All he can do is keep moving forward.

Fever Dream.

Modern verse. This is the default for anything that might take place in the here and now. Focus will most likely be on a college age Armin or older. In this verse, he comes from a lower class family, and was raised by his grandfather. His parents may or may not be among the living, but will most likely be out of the picture due to their line of work or some other such excuse if I've decided they're alive at all. Our boy can be a bit of a hermit here, as he spends a lot of time playing video games (he's very good at them), reading, or studying. His friends may need to drag him away at times to get him involved in their antics.

Second Chances; Recollection.

Reincarnation au. Armin is blessed with a second life, free from the horrors of titans and war. Or so it would seem. Though he doesn't outwardly remember his previous lifetime in Paradis, the memories are occasionally triggered by people, images, or conversation. Is he losing his mind? Perhaps, one day, he'll remember.

As the World Falls Down.

Zombie apocalypse au that I came up with several years ago but never bothered to properly write. As a virus spreads across the country, Armin teams up with Eren and Mikasa on a journey to a mysterious medical facility in the hopes of finding Eren's father; a doctor who they believe has been working on a cure. What they don't realize, is that Grisha and his team were actually the cause of the virus to begin with. An accidental case of biological warfare that he's been desperately trying to correct. As the three friends make their way through the treacherous hellscape their world has become, a hoard of the undead separates Armin from his companions, and he's sure Eren, who was bitten in the midst of protecting him, is now dead because of him. Left on his own, and close to giving up, Armin decides not to let Eren's sacrifice go to waste, and instead presses on to the distant medical facility, hoping that Mikasa is still alive, and the two of them will somehow be reunited. Featuring such never ever been done before tropes as: Eren is immune because Grisha used him as a guinea pig.

Alpha shiloh x alpha FemReader (If nerf battle had zombies)

Me and shiloh were the alpha zombies, and if you were wondering how there's two alphas your answer is... I don't really well we are a different species if zombie and there was like a glitch but that doesn't matter I also heard that some suvivors would try to stop us but me and shiloh weren't gonna let that happen .Their squad didn’t just fight against our zombie kind; they were survivors wanting to get ride of us from this place

. Each member of the team was unique in their own way but so were we. Me and shiloh could easily infect them all this battle would probably even be to easy.Me and shiloh heard them talking

 “Remember: today we’re not just fighting for survival! We’re here for glory!” a boy in blue called out I think his was eligah or something  readying his Nerf blaster.

“Glory? I thought we were just here for the snacks afterwards!” Mary exclaimed, "dont worry im jokeing"

With a collective nod, the team positioned themselves, each taking a defensive stance as David counted down.“Three… Two… One… Go!”

From the bushes me and shiloh were spying on them .i kinda had a crush on shiloh but ill talk bout thay later hehe .the suvivors goal was clear: the  survivors had to defeat the two amazing fabulous alphas also known as me and shiloh to free their town; me and shiloh just had to infect them we already had an army of zombies from suvivors we previously infected

"are you ready "shiloh ask me

"I was born ready "I reply with a smirk  The battle erupted with wild whoops and laughter. Nerf darts whizzed through the air, colliding with anything that moved. Us zombies retaliated with leaps and dodges, their grace almost enchanting. Eligah quickly devised a strategy while talking into a Nerf blaster, “Micha, cover the ground! Judah, go somehow  distract them!”

“On it!” Judah shouted, sprinting towards some zombie and done some distraction dance "what on earth are you doing "some zombie asked 

"a distraction "judah replies proudly then run away from the group of zombie chaceing him“Looks like Judah’s got them entertained,” micah chuckled,

shooting a nerf dart towards Shiloh but missing her completely

."is that all you got "shiloh says and infects micah and his clothes and hair turn green"Oh my favourite colour,"micah says

happily Meanwhile, Josiah attempted to make me change sides .“How about you change teams, Y/N? I mean, who wants to be a zombie when you can be a—”“Sorry you ain't my type "I call out to him and infect him to .man am I good at this

Buoyed by spirit and hilarity, the zombies turned to me and shilih, we call out, “Okay, zombies, I need your attention! We’re not just undead; we’re fabulously undead!”

The battle raged on, but soon both sides started to tire, and the air around them throbbed with laughter rather than aggression. Daniel, spotting Shiloh alone for a moment, gleefully aimed his blaster.

“It’s just you and me now, alpha zombie”“are you sure bout that?” Shiloh teased, flipping her hair then a group of zombies surround Daniel."Oh-!!"daniel calls out

All the zombies attack him and shiloh skips away Apon the fun, I'm walking around looking for people when i see Marry on top of a climbing wall " Get   down " I tell mary

"NEVER,"she shouts,

I groan I start throwing axes at mary but she is somehow like dodging them.

Finally, i hit her hand and she falls down but i catch her

“Was that you saving me? Awww, thank you, I'll just go and not disturb you” Marry says in hope

Zombie micah walks up to me and I throw mary to him and say "deal with her," then walk off“evryone stay on your feet!” Eligah called out,

turning to find Shiloh and eligah tries to shoot her but I throw an axe at the bullet "damn I have SUCH GOOD AIM !!!"I shout

And eligah just runs off "hey get back here "shiloh says

"So how ya been girlie pop "I asked shiloh

"Oh ya know just defending our whole zombie kind from annoying suvivors so like nothing much "shiloh answers sarcastically. 

"OK I get it, jeez." I laugh.

We see a Nerf gernade being thrown at me and shiloh but I caught it"HEY I CAUGHT I-" i begin

but shiloh grabs it from my hand and throws it away it explodes mid-air but shiloh pulls me behind a table"Maybe be more careful next time Y/N" shiloh says

"Yeah you right Sooo let go get more suvivors, yeah?"i say and run off

"Wait Y/N wait for meee," shiloh calls and runs after me. There are a crowd of zombies protecting me and shiloh as we see nerf darts flying around everywhere me and shiloh separate for a bit and then I hear very loud music playing

"WHAT AND WHERE IS THAT SOUND COMING FROM"Me and shiloh say at the same time we go to investigate it

But when we got there there was a speaker on the ground and no one here but as we turn around we see eligah pointing two nerf guns at us

"Oh how cooked are we " shiloh says

"OMG LOOK AT THAT" i scream

"Do you really think I'm that much of an idiot" elgah ask me

"I have two things to answer that question !first thing yes second thing ultra yes third thing- oh wait I said I have 2 thing to say hold on hmm-" I say with a smile

but eligah wasn't buying it at all

And just as it looked like the survivors would win, I threw my last axe at Eligah but he dodges it i use this tim and run behind him pick up my axe .and when he is now fully aware of his surroundings i quickly launched a surprise sneak attack on eligah woth my axe .

“Surprise! You’ve just been Y/N-fied’! ”I laugh and shiloh just stares at me to stunned to speak .There was one person left now judah we got out everyone else but now that I think of it after he got chased by a group of zombies at the start we haven't seen him anywhere after strange

"Where is this boy "I wonder to myself and at that moment judah pops up right infront of me

"I got you now alpha "judah says proudly 

"You forgot about shiloh" I say "she's an alpha two ya know"

"REALLY!oh yeah I forgot there were two alphas this time where is shiloh "judah ask .

Was he asking me or himself I have no clue 

"Right here "shiloh says behind him and infects him

"OMG WE WON WE JUST WON !!!"

i scream hugging shiloh I blush a bit"Yeah we did "shiloh says looking around incase their were any left suvivors we didn't see yet“Just like that, team! Can I hear it for the zombies?” i shouted, raising my hands, celebrating with shiloh and the other zombies.,

proud of the 'fun' we had, but more importantly, witnessing the joy radiating from the crew. As dusk settled, Shiloh approaches me“Looks like we did it, partner,” i say to shil her eyes sparkling.

Sparks blurred around us, and with soft bravery, Shiloh leaned in, whispering, “It’s moments like these I think we should… transform. Let’s unite as friends, and maybe even more.”And just like that, amid the foam darts and laughter, me and shiloh shared a gentle kiss, as we pull away for air were both blushing ,but we were happy I was happy

 "Sooo wanna do it again "i ask in hope "how could I say no " shiloh  replies and pulls me in for another kiss and in this moment of sincere affection that echoed against the night, sealing our bond in the chaotic atmosphere of feelings , laughter, and love.

AVP3: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR III - RECLAMATION: an excuse to get the characters of Dutch (Schwarzenegger) and Ripley into the same story.

VOORHEES: Camp Crystal Lake has been buried under a hundred years of changing earth. While on a family holiday, a young man stumbles across a rotted old hockey mask from which an old woman's voice seems to emanate. Jason may be dead and gone, but his legacy continues.

KRUEGER: the disturbing origin story of the nightmarish serial killer Fred Krueger.

PLAY MISTY II: THE RESURRECTION: an absolute troll of an idea, something that would be a direct-to-video release with different actors than the original. Just think it's funny that her ghost would come back to keep asking "Play Misty for me?"

OVERLORD 2: the same soldiers march further into Germany and there is plenty more Nazi zombie action.

Here in no particular order is my fail safe opinionated and completely flawed list of films I enjoyed the most last year. There are a lot of films I did not see, so for all “A Serious Man” and “Antichrist” lovers IM SORRY I DIDNT GET AROUND TO WATCHING THEM! They are on my ilovefilm list, honest. This film got bafflingly average reviews despite the fact it is a complete return to form after the film about Kirk Russel killing women WITH HIS CAR!

The acting displayed from Christoph Waltz would make Daniel Day Lewis weep into his cobblers shoes, and the  scene in which the “Basterds” are undercover in the German bar….I was literally hanging off my seat, about to fall unto the floor, gripping the chair of the arm scared…..it was unrelentingly good. Even my mum liked it, and her favorite film is “Shirley Valentine.”

The Hurt Locker

This Katherine Bigelow piece tracks a bomb defusal squad in Iraq and although I am unsure about its slightly one sided patriotic message, it is still an educational, gripping and somewhat disturbing insight into the American army.

Frost/Nixon

One of my favorite films of last year, I knew little to nothing about Watergate or Nixon himself and this film made me learn things which normally I hate! plus Michael Sheen is always an incredibly watch-able and charismatic presence.

Star Trek

It could have sucked, it could have been a sacrilegious experience, but it was entertaining and sensitive to its origins.

Where The Wild Things Are

This is a incredibly brave and incredibly heartbreaking film which shows that Mr Jonze does not bend to the will of studios, it explores the confusion of childhood so perfectly and really pulls the “Stand By Me” esque punches. Perfect. BRING TISSUES.

In The Loop

I love Armando Iannucci very hard, plus its nice to know what “My Girl” is up to. The political ramifications this film depicts are also somewhat terrifying.

Hunger

I love Michael Fassbender very hard as well, and this biopic of political prisoner and hunger strike participant Bobby Sands is a uneasy viewing experience… he was also great in the disturbing “Eden Lake.”

A heartbreakingly beautiful biopic with the guy from High School Musical.

Public Enemies

There was something about this which sparked me despite its glaring errors and flaws (e.g filming on digital and Christian “continually disappointing” Bale.) I think its the unrelenting charisma of Marion Cottilard and Johnny Depp.

Coraline

A incredibly terrifying “kids” film with wreaths of imagination and darkness to boot.

My Least Favourite Film of the Year: (500) Days of Summer. It has to be seen to be believed how try hard and awful it is. I would recommend going out and watching it right now, honestly. Do it.

Austin Stoker, star of ‘Assault on Precinct 13’ and ‘Sheba, Baby,’ dies at 92

Austin Stoker, a veteran actor who most notably starred in John Carpenter’s sophomore feature “Assault on Precinct 13” and co-starred with Pam Grier in the 1975 blaxploitation feature “Sheba, Baby,” died Friday of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 92.

Details regarding Stoker’s death were shared by his wife of 43 years, Robin Stoker, on her personal Facebook Monday evening. Robin called Austin “the love of my life” in her tribute.

In another tribute, actor and director Bill Duke hailed Stoker as “one of Hollywood’s unsung actors” and shared his blessings to his family.

In the landmark independent thriller “Assault on Precinct 13,” Stoker starred as Lt. Ethan Bishop, a Black cop who must lead a group of criminals, civilians and office workers as a police station is besieged by a relentless army of street gang members. The lead role furthered Stoker’s acting career at the time and cinched his reputation as a cult film figure.

In addition to “Precinct 13,” Stoker also played a key role in 1973’s “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” in which he played Macdonald, the right hand human to Roddy McDowall’s primate leader Caesar. In 1975, he played Brick Williams, the love interest to Pam Grier’s P.I., in director William Girdler’s “Sheba, Baby.”

Stoker also played prominent film roles in “The Get-Man” and “Abby,” both also helmed by Girdler, as well as “Airport ’75,” “Abby,” “Time Walker,” “Combat Cops” and “The Zebra Killer.” In 2019, he featured in Rob Zombie’s horror film “3 From Hell.” His most recent listed screen credit is the 2022 black comedy “Give Till It Hurts.”

On television, Stoker played Virgil Harvey, the father to Olivia Cole‘s character Mathilda, on ABC’s landmark 1977 series “Roots.” He also appeared on “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Lou Grant,” “Trapper John, M.D.,” “Murder She Wrote” and other programs. Stoker also earned a Drama-Logue Critics award for outstanding achievement in theatre for his performance in the production “Split Second.”

Born Alphonso Marshall on Oct. 7, 1930 in Trinidad, Stoker came to New York to pursue a career in show business. His first TV role came in 1969 with an episode of “The Mod Squad.”

Stoker is survived by his wife, Robin; children, Tiffany and Origen; and grandsons, Marcus and Austin.

So the party is investigating this huge magic wasteland where ancient sorcerer-kings of DOOM faced down the collective might of the world/the gods a few millennia back, using the airship we took from-

Hold on, back up. Backstory helps the context here but it’s also really cool so bear with me.

Ok so my fiancee’s character Tora Amon is a half-drow Shadow Sorcerer from the preeminent Evil Sorcerer family in the aforementioned magic wastes. She hates them, and so is on our side. My character, Altanin, is a tiefling of previously unknown lineage. But it TURNS OUT that Tora’s family has been literally breeding bigger, tougher, scarier tieflings for like a thousand plus years, and Altanin is of that lineage. So he’s basically tiefling Khan Noonien Singh, except his (adoptive?) human momma raised him right so he’s actually quite a good dude.

So some OTHER people from Tora’s family, the Amons, launched an invasion of my barbarian’s homeland, tearing up ancient gravesites, enslaving the local Fantasy Mongolian humans, and generally being Horrible in their search for ancient accursed weapons. Well WE found those weapons first and then defeated them in a huge pitched battle with Altanin’s fantasy Mongolian people versus the sorcerers’ army of zealot tiefling ubermenschen and raised zombies, while the party fought the sorcerers directly. We killed one, the other was fleeing on his airship, but Altanin grabbed the dangling chains and busted his unique mechanic which allows him to increase his strength by doubling it for 3 ability damage- taking like 12 ability damage (they recover slowly over several long rests) and briefly cranking his strength to like... 320???? ...allowing him to strain against some rocks but PULL THE AIRSHIP FROM THE SKY

So we kill the surviving Amon sorcerer, and claim the airship for our own. We re-name it the Phoenix for a number of thematic reasons and also because of Altanin’s big phoenix tattoo on his chest which he’s come to be associated with thanks to his exploits in the world of pro-wrestling gladiatorial matches in the big arena in the world’s biggest city. It still needs some work, but the literal demon that’s powering it is able to start repairing/healing it after a short negotiation wherein we give her more freedom which I’m sure will ABSOLUTELY not backfire on us IN ANY WAY later on. 

So we get the airship up and running, and decide that now is the time to fly into the wastes from whence the Amon sorcerer twins came, hunt down the other Amons, as well as those tiefling ubermenschen who have rebelled against them who seem 100% convinced that Altanin was one of theirs, lost some 25 years ago as an infant. Which would be great news, Altanin finding his birth family, but they seem hella... culty. Like they broke free from the Amons, great! And still are an organization calling itself ‘The Children of the Apocalypse.’ Which is... not heartening.

So it’s our first session back, and we’re in the wastes. We see all manner of cool, awesome, terrifying monstrosities from our vantage point high above in the Phoenix, and make our way to the citadel still held by the Radiant Order, the remnant of that ancient grand alliance that put down the sorcerer-kings so long ago. Altanin, as a giant tiefling who looks like he’s either one of the Amon’s eugenically-bred Knights or one of the rebels from the Amons who still serves a dangerous-ass cult, and Tora, as a literal Amon Sorceress albeit one we happen to like, decide to hang back on the airship while our half-elvel Ranger, Aashi, and our drow Rogue, Fen, head to the citadel.

Once there, they find out that the group is actually expected thanks to some interactions we had with the head of the Order back in the aforementioned world’s largest city (the one with the arenas Altanin loves), and they wouldn’t have shot Altanin or Tora on sight. Aww! 

But then a couple of actual Amon airships roll up on one of the Radiant Order’s scout airships as it’s coming back in from patrol. Tora and Altanin get the go-ahead via Message and take the Phoenix back into the sky.

So the Phoenix starts rocking up, the crews on the Amon airships cheer, the crew on the Radiant Order airship probably start to shit themselves even harder, but we rock up into range. Tora commands the port batteries to open fire on one Amon airship, while Altanin guides the Phoenix into ramming the other. 

If you know me as a person, you can imagine how excited I am at this point and how all I can hear in my head are taiko drums and bagpipes. Then Altanin looks at Tora and invites her along for a boarding action.

Tora (played by my fiancee) hasn’t shown any interest in Altanin, but this would make for a really great first date for them.

Altanin leaps like 90′ onto the airship as it lurches away, reeling from the impact, fire blazing from him as he rages, activates his magical sword’s spinning teeth (like a chainsaw, but with real teeth) and proceeds to go all horror movie on the Amon crew. Tora meanwhile uses her shadowstep to close the distance in a much subtler but also MUCH spookier manner, and begins snuffing out crew with callous ease- her ‘ray of frost’ aesthetically appearing as though she draws the breath and all warmth from a target like she’s snatching souls, meanwhile her Hound of Ill Omen is crunching bones and spattering blood everywhere, too. 

We slaughter the captain and then crash the thing into the ground, using our respective leap/shadowstep to get off just in time, then walking away from the explosion like the cool guys we are. 

We then rock up on the survivors from the good guy airship, backlit by fire, our own shadow and flame swirling around us like whoa. They are understandably taken aback a bit but then Altanin steps into the light and his own fire dies down as he stops raging and he gets his Big Damn Hero moment, as, towering over them all, he says 

“I am Altanin the Unbreakable. And I am here to help.”

Anyhow it was entirely too fun and my boy got to be a rowdy hero and so it was GREAT. The game’s going to be on a much reduced schedule (like, monthly instead of weekly) but at least I get to play my boy again. :)

Some thoughts about the new Love, Death and Robots season

I just sat and watched the new season of Love, Death and Robots, aaaaaaand, I’m going to save you some reading in case you want my conclussions, so quick bullet points, rant after:

Graphically is really good, as previous seasons, the studios involved really did an amazing job.

Story-wise... Not so much, instead of the interesting concepts we saw in previous seasons, this felt like they went with “So, people liked the gore and epic battles and horror, let’s focus on that”. 

Theme wise, nothing new, it felt so.... “we’ve seen this before”, so unlike previous seasons.

Now, the rant begins.

One of the things that made me fall in love with the first season of LDaR (and a good chunk of the second) wasn’t just the stunning visuals, it was the ideas behind them. They explored concepts that were so interesting to watch. Episodes like Zima Blue, The Witness, Good Hunting, explored really interesting ideas. Yeah, nothing that hadn’t been explored in literature, or even in comics, but it was a feast to the eyes and mind to see them explored alongside such stunning visuals.

The second season had some episodes that felt a bit flat, but also had some really good stories. I’m particularly fond of The Drowned Giant and Pop Squad, but even the ones that were a bit more for spectacle were fun to watch. And while not so “original”, Ice, and Life Hutch told stories that glued you to the screen.

This last season? Well, I don’t want to be mean, I know it’s not easy to write stories... but they either weren’t really stories, just Pitches for what felt RPG games (”What about Intelligent rats! But Scottish!” or “What modern Army against Call of Cthulhu monsters!”). It felt like they picked the most watched episodes from the first seasons and did a “Focus group study”, and just make similar ones, but without focusing so much on the story, only on the “Elements” that they thought made those successful.

To give some examples of why I think they did a better job on previous seasons:

In Vaulted Halls Entombed VS The Secret War: In the Secret War, while there was a lot of epic fighting and visuals, but there was an interest in the human characters, in their traits, in what bonded them together until the end. You felt sorry and sad when a character died, even if you had met them for just 5 minutes. In comparisson, Vaulted halls you only get to really know 1 character, the only one that gets any development, and it’s not that much at all. It’s just “Look at the cool graphics, look at the violence” but without the interesting story. And the whole “plot twist” at the end... anyone that has read anything related to the Myths of Cthulhu, or anything inspired by them, knew what the plot twist was.

Night of the Mini Death VS When the Yogurt Took Over, Ice Age: This one is just old memes and gags about zombie movies. It has a bit of cartoonish humour, and that’s pretty much it. When the Yogurt Took Over plays it’s humour with more “flavour” (terrible pun, I’m sorry), they do a bit of social commentary along their jokes, I had re-watched the Yogurt one, I don’t feel like it has any merit to rewatch Night of the Mini Death.

Kill Team Kill VS Sucker of Souls / Suits: This one is not SO bad, but still, it feels like trying to recreate what made the older ones successful. The humour is not so well thought, the violence is the focus. It’s fun enough, but I don’t think it’s as funny or memorable as the older ones.

Jibaro VS Good Hunting / Life Hutch: This one hurts, I really want to like Jibaro. I love the concept, and I feel I would have liked it a lot more if the camera shake and cinematography had been different. But I feel it has the same issues as the rest of the season. The relationship between the two main characters is barely explored, and it’s even harder to understand due to the constant camera shakes and scene changes. I feel they wanted to do a similar story to the two episodes I’m referencing, but I feel they focused too much on the spectacle and too little in the characters to make it work.

Swarm VS Beyond The Aquila Rift: Again, another one that I really want to like, but I feel that they missed an opportunity here. With Beyoned The Aquila Rift, the question the story proposes is an interesting one: Would you prefer to know if you are in “hell”, or would you be in hell but wrapped in a lovely fantasy. The way the story is told is interesting, and the question itself leaves you thinking way longer after the episode ends. On Swarm... it’s the same old “Oh, Arrogant Humans are not as smart as they think”. We’ve know this thrope for SO LONG, and with so many variations, it requires cleverness and originality to make it interesting.

The remaining 4 episodes, I kinda liked. I do feel they are not at the level of previous stories, they are entertaining, but not as interesting as previous concepts. And I think that sucks. One of the things I loved so much about this series was that it took good sci-fi and fantasy concepts that had been explored in literature, comics, manga, etc, and gave them the full production value to bring them up in ways we hadn’t seen for that style of concepts before.

This latest season, and I know I’ve said this before, but it totally feels like the concepts were picked by Marketing teams doing Benchmarking and wanting to optimize Return of Investment. That’s all good and wise when you are creating ads, but when you are telling stories... you end up picking up the “safe” ones, not the great ones, and the market is full of safe ones.

I hope we do get to see some great stories again some day, but with the direction Netflix is going with it’s animation studios... I’m not hopefull.
