So, I decided to watch Lily Orchard’s latest video about “The Forgotten Gays of Western Animation.”
The video was 3/4ths legit discussion about three lesser-known LGBT characters from Western animation.
The other 4th was Lily propping up this conspiracy theory that these characters were “forgotten” by modern animation nerds as to artificially prop up the “importance” of shows like Korra and She Ra and Owl House and…sigh, just no.
The reason more people don’t know more about characters like Dion, Gene, and Zoit is because:
1) Braceface and 6Teen were Canadian shows that didn’t leave much of a cultural impact here in the States. And,
2) Lloyd in Space was a Saturday morning cartoon that only lasted one season.
😒

There's another cartoon from the early 2000's called Lloyd in Space with an episode discussing gender identity years before it gained more traction.
By Lily's own logic, that episode is more groundbreaking than 6Teen.
Oooooo, Lloyd in Space! I only ever watched it a handful of times when it aired, but wow! I completely forgot about that show.
But omg, that’s actually really great!
I’m sure Lily would still nitpick the fact it wasn’t outright stated and the fact Zoit is an alien. 🙄

When I was a kid, there was a show called "Lloyd in Space"
It was about a 13-year-old alien boy and his friends. One episode in particular made me think, "Am I the right gender?"
Season 3, episode 9; Neither Boy or Girl
"The new kid, Zoit, has an upcoming 13th birthday and will then choose to be either a boy or a girl. The boys (Lloyd and his friends) and girls (Brittany, Megan and Cindy) fight to convince Zoit on which gender is better."
This truly was my first taste and understanding of what non-binary people were. However, I also thought, "This is a cartoon about the future, and space! These types of people don't exist around me! They can't! We can't do that kind of stuff!"
20-something years later, and I find out that, yes, we can.
I didn't understand many things back then, but the one thing I did understand was judgement. "What are other people going to think of you?" "You're going to dress like a girl in public? How shameful!"
These thoughts went through my mind on the daily, and still do. My mom always wondered why I wasn't confident when we went shopping, or went out to eat, or did anything social. I had 1 million eyes on me, watching my every move. One small slip up and it was anti-me joke city.
In the episode, no one was judging Zoit. No one shamed them for wearing a dress, or shorts, or anything. Both 'sides' wanted to 'win' but it was ultimately Zoits' decision
This felt like word vomit. Anyway, the moral of the story is, we need more non-binary and trans representation. This, for me as a kid, helped me bring some thoughts to light. This episode clearly stood out to me, as it's really the only episode I remember.
I don't know how to meaningfully wrap this up.

Lloyd In Space - Why Not Zoit?
Lloyd in Space, S3, Ep 09 - ‘Neither Boy Nor Girl’
“...The new kid, Zoit, has an upcoming 13th birthday and will then choose to be either a boy or a girl. The boys (Lloyd, Kurt, Douglas and Eddie) and girls (Brittany, Megan and Cindy) fight to convince Zoit on which gender is better...”
******
In a way, when you think about it, they came this close to introducing the first (?) non-binary character in animation at the time. A pity they ended it on an ambiguous note where Zoit refused to reveal their identity until they “developed a crush on either of them”.
On the other hand, while the episode included the usual stereotypic interests for boys and girls, they did include some gender-based lessons to balance things out - the guys weeping at a sappy movie, one of the girls being invited to play football.
Pretty bold move for a semi-forgotten Disney show. Imagine if they had gone a little deeper with the execution of this story...

Station: Everytime I hear someone talking about updog, I’m torn between not wanting to fall for it and wanting to help them complete their joke.
Boomer: Okay, but what is updog?
Mendel: Updog is a long sausage in a bun, often served with ketchup, mustard, onions, and/or relish.
Eddie: Nope, that’s a hot dog. An updog is when a new version or patch of an application is released.
Lloyd: No, that's an update. You’re thinking of the fourth largest city in Sweden.
Cindie: Surely, that’s Uppsala, updog is the giant spider in Harry Potter.
Douglas: That’s aragog. Updog is a symbol conventionally used for an arbitrarily small number in analysis proofs.
Zoit: You’re thinking of epsilon. Updog is an upward-moving air current.
Cindy: No, that’s an updraft. An updog is the modern version of a henway.
Kurt: What’s a henway?
Station: Oh, about five pounds.
