On Good Omens, contentment and happiness

Okay, everybody, please bear with me, this might be long.

This is about something that I've noticed in the past, but that was really painfully obvious following the release/leaks of information around Good Omens season 3 over the last few days.

There seem to be two categories of people. The ones that appreciate what they have and the ones that always demand more. Let's talk about the latter category first:

I am using the word demand here because very often I am more reminded of a toddler throwing a tantrum about not being allowed more candy than a grown person that has any experience about what the world is like. I don't want to over-simplify, but for the sake of brevity, let's call this group "the pessimists".

Let's take a small detour and state the facts (as of Oct 24th):

Good Omens season 3 had been announced as 6 episodes, roughly 45min each.

(Credible) Sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman (NG) -- the head writer and producer -- had been made public.

Good Omens season 3 production had been "paused".

Plenty of rumors about a cancellation, lots of radio silence and finally a few days ago strategic leaks from people actually involved in the production that there might be a chance.

Amazon confirmed (today) that season 3 is going forward, without NG on the production team. The format is now one 90min episode/film/feature.

Now, people's reactions to this reveal have been mixed, very understandable, I also have very mixed feelings about this. So far so normal. From my perspective, the difference (and this is the part that is applicable to life in general, not just Good Omens S3) is which side of the "mixed" feelings wins out.

Reactions I've observed in the "pessimist" group: - Outrage that a company associated with NG is in any way legally involved. - "It is now all ruined". - "One episode can never be enough, we need MORE". - "F*ck this". - "This will be horrible". - "I don't want a film". - People outright demanding to get 6 episodes. - "I am literally crying here, my life sucks so bad".

Now, for contrast and for the sake of clarity, I'll call the other group "optimists": - "omg, I am so glad we will get closure". - "90 minutes is basically 2 full episodes". - "I trust Michael and David to make it work". - "I am so grateful to all the people behind the scenes that fought so hard to make this happen". - "The people working on the production are as dedicated fans as we are, they will make it work". - "Other awesome pieces of media are even less than 90 minutes".

To sum up my reaction to these and quote someone I reblogged earlier today (@paperpoetryandpetrichor), what did you think would happen?!

Feelings of disappointment are 100% to be expected, every fan wants as much high quality content as possible. All feelings are valid, but some are (imo) clearly healthier and more productive than others.

I am also sad that we'll "only" get the equivalent of two episodes instead of six. But you know what would have been way sad-er? Zero episodes. Or if they had kept NG involved (Amazon could have simply tried to ignore all this, as TV producers have in the past). There is an infinite plethora of other outcomes that would have been so much worse.

I for one choose to see the positive sides. We will get closure. NG not on production team. Both Michael and David on board (which, as we've also learned today was not a given, everybody had been released from their contracts!). And speaking of Michael and David, they know how much we all love this show -- and they do as well --, they know how much we love Aziraphale and Crowley. I trust that they will fight tooth and nails to make this the absolute best version it can be.

So yeah, what about the overall lesson I draw from this and from the two groups?

I believe that people who are able to focus their energy on the positive aspects of anything really live much happier lives. The same set of facts spark two totally opposite directions of thoughts. We all start out with "oh. I don't know how I feel about this new piece of information?" but where we go from there is totally up to us. For me, the greatest driver of happiness is contentment. Be happy with what you have. You can always want more, because it is important to have aspirations and goals and places/versions of yourself you want to be. But focussing only on what you do not have will just make you unhappy, on top of the not-having.

Breathe. Most everything has a bright side to it, if you focus on that you'll be way better off. The world is not fair and likely never will be, but letting that stop you from enjoying the things in it that are good and bright and joyful only makes you feel worse. Fight to make the world fairer and a better place for everybody. But stop every now and then to smell a flower (or re-watch your favourite series) on the way to remind yourself what you are fighting so hard for.

case in point for the ratings example, since we've already briefly tackled the lack of media literacy—j-dramas on MDL are notoriously rated much, much lower than either k- or c-dramas. half of the time that's bc there are less users watching (and rating) them therefore the average is lower but the other half it's bc people simply do not understand good media when they see it. don't get me wrong there's some freaky ass sh*t in the j-drama world that i would not touch with a Grinch level pole but to see MDLers out here talking about how slow j-dramas are and that nothing's happening. have you considered that you are either watching the wrong genre or you shouldn't be watching j-dramas in the first place bc their entire setup and general narrative framing arcs are not your style. have you even thought about that for six seconds or are you too busy expecting it to read like a typical tropey rom-com k-drama with your trending oppas. (no hate on my tropey rom-coms with [most of] said oppas, i need them when i don't want to think i just want to see sh*t on my screen and scream about hot people and the Hand Umbrellas in the Rain and the Back Hold when the male lead catches the female lead before she falls and you have the fifteen second focus on their faces just looking at each other)

this is not to say that all of MDL is like this. i have gotten tuned into absolute masterpieces of content (and have tuned others, amen) bc of a comment comparing a show i'm watching to another one or a review being posted in the feeds about a film with less than 500 people interested. i have reconsidered my choice to not watch something after having spirited discussions in private messages discussing the pros and cons of the premise and whether they managed to get it done without f*cking sh*t up. i still contribute semi-regularly by adding relatively unknown actors and crew members to the database so they can get the credit due them. if you know where to look, you can get some good sh*t out of that place. problem is most users who are new to both the site and East/Southeast Asian cinema as a whole don't know where to look, and the cycle continues, and the ratings continue to be skewed/bloated and no one pays attention to the plot, if there even is any to pay attention to.

tl;dr: begging people to not let MDL be the be all end all for their drama recs a la 'well MDL doesn't like it so i won't watch it'. babe we have said MDLers complaining about how the ratings on Viki are too high but in my entire time watching dramas i've found that in the past two to three years the Viki ratings are making more sense than the MDL ones. sit with that for a sec. when you're done branch out and see the world (literally and cinematically), i promise you will be a better person for it

i didn't like the introduction of nick's character at all. it really skews how i see rio in the early seasons. i just find it v hard to believe his strings were being pulled by his brother-cousin or whatever the f*ck they kept calling each other. didn't work for me. see also: phoebe and the 'secret service' HARD PASS ON THEM ALL

i didn't *hate* two of the scenes that a significant portion of the fandom felt were controversial/unnecessary at the time (rio getting shot at the end of s2 and the wire strip down scene in s4). sure there were some problematic elements to both, but i took the scenes with a grain of salt each, i guess.

to answer your second question, i never thought rio had a long term gf, and tbh it's news to me that that's a headcannon! i think he had a kid with a woman (with whom he was maybe serious with at one point) and they were co-parenting as best as they could given his... line of work lol. forever team brio, though i never *really* saw them as an endgame ~couple~. i more so envisioned them keeping up a crime colleagues with benefits-type relationship. y'know, the occasional bathroom hookup or mid-bbq fingering or car-smashing foreplay. as crime hubs/wives do.

My favourite character might appear to be KEL. Which is partly true. I mean, he's the only character ice really made "fan art" of, the only character I posted about on here (I didn't really post too much Omori related stuff on this blog though), he's simply relatable in so many ways to me and means a lot to me. He's a character personal to me and i will beat you anyone who insults him. Yes, there are some things I find hard to relate to, such as being a basketball player, or -havingahardtimegettingoveryourboyfriendssistersdeathandbeingunabletocopeeithitandandd- but overall he's relatable enough. I love him dearly. I would kill for him. I will defend him.

He's my second favourite character.

My *_actual_* favourite character is someone far more embarrassing and I suppose "comedic" to an extent.

It is THE MAVERICK.

Perhaps one of the biggest losers in the game, he actually holds quite a special place in my heart. The most Omori fanfiction I've read is centered around him (and moreso specifically him x kel) and I wouldn't kill for him, I would kill him. He's such a loser. A lovable one.

I don't think I can quite express it with words accurately, but I will make an attempt.

Like. He's so lovable and kick able. Hes dramatic, theatric, is definitely a huge anime fan, has an ARCH NEMESIS for titans sake (having an arch nemesis your age? Kinda gay /j), he made a name for himself, said "f*ck you, I don't care that i was named this way because of my family members and society, I'm gonna take it into my own hands" and I can't blame him.

Most importantly he is one of those characters that has an overconfident facade to cover up his actual deep insecurities.

It has been shown he's quick to get insecure, such as people calling him his given name is seen as an instant trigger of some emotion, where he gets really anxious and nervous. He made such an attempt to distance himself from his family, and if we go deeper and fetch it farther, he's made such an attempt to distance himself from who he is.

Obviously, he wouldn't express his insecurities. He's bad at almost everything, just trying to become popular, loved, going as far to pay girls to date him. He wears a wig, people have said that he tries everything in order to stand out.

But WAIT

We have seen him get extremely insecure from people like KEL calling him "MIKHAEL". Perhaps he's trying to impress everyone, with his own forged identity rather than his given identity.and while I do love that it's more hinted that THE MAVERICK isnt necessarily who he is but a slight facade (his theatric personality is not a facade though because I say so). THE MAVERICK is by some extension someone to mask MIKHAEL. So when people see and know who he truly is, MIKHAEL, he gets scared and his supposed overconfidence waters down and gets in touch with fire, forming into smoke quickly escaping and joining the air it's invisibility.

BUT

He has been shown not feeling uncomfortable with THE HOOLIGANS calling him his given name.

Proof: (just search "Aubreys birthday comic" you'll find it (official comic made by the creator, OMOCAT)

When Aubrey asked, "wheres MIKHAEL?" I fully expected him to barge in and get upset over it. However..

Nope! It's completely normal! THE HOOLIGANS just casually address him with MIKHAEL and he shows zero problem with it.

Might be very far fetched, but perhaps it's because he feels safe and accepted by the hooligans- like he doesn't have to hide who he truly is, his true identity is completely safe around them.

This shows that MIKHAEL is able to be more personal and open with THE HOOLIGANS. Because he feels more accepted.

Not having to buy them for attention, like he literally bought two girls to act like they're dating him, he can just be himself

Or maybe I'm just too obsessed with him and completely overanalyzing him.

The protags are technically male. But because I sometimes also draw them as females + because they are faceless, they are written to also have some feminine qualities in their appearance. Or, they may not be human at all, considering the way they fly; and their wingmen will do well not to forget that they are predators, no matter how alluring or nice they seem to be.

AC6’s Shamrock/Talisman are my rare pair. Their story started out when I was thinking about how they’d ever get together, considering how much baggage Shamrock has. And I just happened to write it down, and by that time it was already a full-length fic. Might as well dump it on AO3.

ACZ and AC6 go together for me. I find them like mirror images of each other and hence, easier to write or draw as a “set”. Besides a weakness for the Angel and Demon trope (I blame Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett for writing Good Omens), I think ACZ and AC6 were purposeful corporate “mirror projects”: ACZ and 6 were developed around the same time (release date 2006/2007 - the only 2 main platform games in the AC series developed so close to each other), and both teams prob practically, in a very corporate fashion, were given tasks to focus on building FACELESS protagonists that were opposite just to ensure no overlaps when the biz was running 2 similar projects. As a testimony to some of the development similarities, the Garuda team even had a 3rd wingman (but dropped), very similar to the Galm Team.

Note: This a hypothesis based on understanding & practical experience of messy, large corporate cultures. Unproven in the Namco (pre-merger) context, but I guess similar patterns prevail across industries?

So, I think the Demon of Ustio was conceived first and management just went like ok, corporate has a demon now, this faceless thing is gonna be a challenge if we’re running 2 concurrent games cos we just can’t make them LOOK different, let’s do an angel/ angels for the other one so there will absolutely be no way we can clash the characterizations. The Angel and Demon trope was just too convenient and I think that resulted in Cipher and Talisman being developed to achieve the same outcome (ace pilots who are a cut above the rest, instrumental to winning the wars they were in etc), while being the exact opposite of each other.

A feared mercenary bound to no rules | An admired leader in the air force. Lone contributor | Strategist. Fear inspiring | Awe inspiring. Faces off against a wingman who breaks orders | Stays together with a wingman who breaks orders. Both their wingmen are also highly effective but one turned out to want to kill them | the other will die for them.

At the end of the day, Ciph & Tali would both be annoyed at how similar they really are despite trying to be so different (affectionate) - hence the basis of their beef in the chaotic ACZ/6/7 AU that sometimes features here. But they do have a grudging respect for each other and might bond over their shared love for capable-idiot wingmen (again affectionate), and TROUNT lol.

And after all, both are still to be feared, bringing salvation and destruction in their own way. Cipher - all shall fear me and despair | Talisman - all shall love me and despair. Pun intended cos they fly Eagles, but not to Mordor.

This was my first thought the moment I saw that tae is getting 5 music videos. Like seriously?

But I think after seeing how jimin's album was treated that became kinda like an example for taehyung. He knew that if he will release under bighit then he will probably get the same treatment like jimin because there's no way they will give tae the same treatment as jk. I think only jk and yg are the company's fav. Tae has never been the company's fav. Not until now at least.

So yeah maybe after seeing jimin's album tae he decided to release his album under min heejin or whatever her name is. He probably wanted good promotions which is reasonable and he knew that he will not get it by bighit.

Jimin didn't have any examples so he probably didn't know that they would treat his album like that.

He even said in that Japanese interview that he asked for mv for all songs and they said that it's impossible.

The poor boy even said that he maybe asked for too much.

World of Tomorrow

I am a Marvel shill. I love the comics, the worlds, the films; All of it. To this day, i am an MCU apologist, though, lately, that’s becoming harder and harder to do. I personally feel that, between the Big Two, Marvel is the superior company in all aspects, save one - animation. Marvel animated fair is pitiful in comparison to what DC has given us over the years. I mean, the Nineties were solid with the X-Men, FF, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man shows but Batman: The Animated Series trumps all of that. B:TAS is more than classic and gave birth to one of the most intricate, enduring, and entertaining franchises, ever. DC has had a penchant for animation since On Leather Wings first aired so long ago and that has continued to this day. I mean, they made kind of a detour with that mixed bag of a film universe based on the Nnu52, the DCAMU, but that got the reboot treatment with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and gave birth to what looks to be a brand new franchise: The Tomorrowverse.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow

On the surface, this is a solid “Superman” origin story. In reality, it's a dogsh*t watch. This is the firt entry into the Tomorrowverse and it's definitely a mixed bag. Love the animation and art direction. Love the casting, outside of Lois Lane. Kind of hate the Parasite and Martian Manhunter redesigns. Really hate this universe's take on Lex Luthor. Out the box, for me, The Tomorrowverse stumbled and hasn't really recovered yet. The following two entries (three if you count the two part Long Halloween entry) are much, much, better. Unfortunately, the last two, so far, are much, much, worse.

Justice Society: World War II

I kind of liked this one. It’s basically Flashpoint mixed with New Frontier. It’s an interesting idea and the execution is there, but it feels like filler almost. Almost as if this is the jumping off point for something more. All in all, it’s kind of my favorite of the bunch, not named Long Halloween. It’s always dope seeing DC’s wildly overpowered take on heroes, participate in very much human conflict. All in all, solid watch.

Batman: The Long Halloween

I actually wrote and entire proper review on this when it first released. I loved it. Most accurate adaption of the iconic Bat-story to date and the best entry of The Tomorrowverse to date. Well worth a watch or two.

Green Lantern: Beware My Power

This on was weird as f*ck. Actually, to be honest, all of these are kind of weird as f*ck. All of the Tomorrowverse entries, except Halloween, are weird retellings of iconic narratives from the comics, but wrong? Like, this is definitely the origin story to Kyle Rayner’s take on Green Lantern, down to a really corny take on Parallax, but it was given to Jon Stewart. Hell, they threw in a little bit of sexual chemistry with Hawkgirl at the end as a nod to their DCAU romance. Ultimately, this thing was f*cking boring. Zero out of ten, would not recommend.

Legion of Super-Heroes

I think i liked this one even less than Green Lantern. I honestly have nothing good to say about it outside of the costumes are dope. That’s kind of it.

The Tomorrowverse is in it’s infancy but, so far, it’s underwhelming. The writing needs to be much better and the overarching plot should probably be much, much, more compelling. Still, i love the art style and character designs but, if I'm being honest, it’s worse than it’s predecessor. There’s still room to grow but if this is what tomorrow holds, I'm happy with what we got today.

Since my first year of uni has wrapped too, let me share some thoughts, in no particular order:

Socialising: Finding some friends you can swap notes with, do coursework with together, bounce back and forth ideas with, ask about their understanding of a topic helped me so so much

On a similar note: study groups. They may be a pain to organise, if you have people with very varying schedules, but they're honestly a godsend. (Granted that is if you actually manage to study instead of just chatting.) This is 95% of the reason why I passed my statistics exam

Caring less: may sound a little counterintuitive but hear me out. Grades? Not that big a deal. What matters is passing, whether on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd attempt. Looks? Literally no one will bat an eye. I've seen people in full suit and tie chatting and bring friends with people in sweats who looked like they'd just rolled out of bed. Zero f*cks given by anyone.

Basic needs: your studies are just that, studies. Your health, both physically and mentally are more important. Also, health in reverse massively impacts your ability to focus and work. So look after yourself. Decent (and enough!) food, water, a little bit of movement and fresh air (even if it's just getting off the bus one stop earlier and walking for a couple of minutes) and downtime where you can focus on anything not uni- or household-related

Hope this helped at least one or two of you. Either way, it was interesting for myself too, reflecting on the past year 😊

my first year of grad school will be challenging in more ways than one and a true test of my time management. i expressed this concern to my soon-to-be PI and they told me to remember "the time where your grades matter has passed. just do the bare minimum to get credit for the class" and thats honestly helpful. like i know how to direct my attention for my coursework, and they also gave me tips on time blocking for lab, etc etc.

it'll be an adjustment and there will definitely be a rough transition period the first couple months, but i know i've got this. do you all have any tips??
