A Zen student came to Bankei and complained: “Master, I have an ungovernable temper. How can I cure it?”

“You have something very strange,” replied Bankei. “Let me see what you have.”

“Just now I cannot show it to you,” replied the other.

“When can you show it to me?” asked Bankei.

“It arises unexpectedly,” replied the student.

“Then,” concluded Bankei, “it must not be your own true nature. If it were, you could show it to me at any time. When you were born you did not have it, and your parents did not give it to you. Think that over.”

Yoshi-san

There was once a young man named Yoshi. The townspeople of the marketplace became convinced he was mentally deranged. They longed to have him committed to the mental institution, but there was nothing in Yoshi's behavior which could mandate such an action. Therefore, the townspeople, in cooperation with local sympathetic authorities, began to think of ways they could test Yoshi in order to see if he was, or rather, to prove that he was insane. Yoshi, being of a keenly perceptive nature, immediately sensed the schemes of the townspeople, but paid no mind.

When he went to the butcher, the butcher pointed to a little girl behind the counter, and said, "Have you met my mother?"

Yoshi, feigning surprise, exclaimed, "Mrs Hikikomoto! Of course! Your son has told me all about you. He is a rascal of a devil, he is. Best meats in all the prefecture!"

The little girl looked to her father quizzically, but her father was not paying any attention. He was signaling to the townspeople in secret, mouthing and gesturing, "He is completely insane!"

The next day Yoshi went to market looking for day laborers who could help him move from one small house in the neighborhood to another. The townspeople had arranged a meeting for Yoshi with one such "worker," a 90 year old woman with a broken back. Yoshi said, "You are exactly who I'm looking for. You're hired!" He then proceeded to move all his furniture and belongings by himself. At day's end, he paid the old woman in full.

Finally Yoshi, craving persimmons, went to the local fruit stall. The grocer's eyes, upon seeing Yoshi approaching, grew wide and he immediately perked up and prepared. He placed his dog at the scale and dressed the hound up in a grocer's attire.

"Good morning, Yoshi. This is my son, Hiroki. He will be taking over the fruit stall after I'm gone. Please, deal with him. He needs to learn how to run the fruit stand."

Yoshi smiled at the dog. "Picking up after your old man, eh?"

Yoshi placed his persimmons on the scale, calculated their exact price according to weight, and placed three coins in front of the dog.

"Good luck with your studies, Hiroki."

The dog barked in response.

The grocer signaled to the townspeople, "He's totally mad!"

Later that evening the townspeople assembled in the home of the local magistrate, who was sympathetic to their cause. One by one they made their pleas to him.

"I told him my daughter was my mother and he didn't laugh, he didn't look at me funny, he just kept shopping like nothing was happening! She's all but three years old! She rang him up for Christ's sake!"

"He had that old woman lifting that heavy furniture! A normal person would have said, 'wait a minute, this must be a joke,' but no, not Yoshi! He's totally mad!"

"There are witnesses here who will testify, they saw Mr Yoshi buy five kilograms of persimmons from my dog."

The authorities were convinced of the magnitude of the situation and dispatched three attendants to escort Yoshi-san to the nearby district's sanitarium.

The attendants arrived at Yoshi's home just as Yoshi was watering some blue chrysanthemums outside in his entrance.

"Is this the right house?"

"I'm not sure."

The head attendant approached Yoshi.

"Yoshi, I'm afraid it's time."

"Time for what?"

"For the asylum."

"Yes, it is time. And it has been time for many, many moons now."

The attendant's eyes lit up and he let out a big smile. "I'm glad we're in agreement. Let us go then."

"There's not enough room."

"What are you talking about? There's plenty of room."

"No, there's not enough room - not in the whole world." Yoshi sighed and shook his head. "No… not all the asylums in the world could accommodate."

The attendant smiled sarcastically and gave a knowing glance to the others. "And how do you know this, oh great one?" he queried sardonically.

"Because I have seen the world, and I have walked among you. The world is old, and dirtied. The clean water now clouded with black detritus. All causal chains have branched into infinite offshoots, now fracturing and splintering infinite latticeworks of lightning, spreading and spidering over dark and purple skies; this creation is nearing its maximally allowed entropic diffusion. The world is bursting at the seams; she is at capacity. The harvest is nigh and the grainstores are full. I'm sorry to bring you such bad news, but I'm afraid there is just no room."
