Some Wholesome Pre-Calamity Zelink thoughts
Tumblr media
Link demanding he stays watch all night when they’re traveling, only for Zelda to find him slumped and leaning against the hilt of the master sword buried into the ground when she wakes up
Zelda asking Link to teach her how to draw a bow, and Link helping her with her form, both of them desperately trying to focus as he adjusts her arms, her back to his chest.
Zelda watching intently as Link puts his hair up into his wolf tail, specifically admiring how he holds his hair tie in between his teeth as he does it.
Link always walking three steps behind her even when she tells him he doesn’t have to. That he can walk side-by-side with her. But it’s easier to look at her this way.
THE PININGGGG. Zelda giggling about him as she writes in her diary when they’re at the palace and her handmaidens sharing glances of amusement.
Link taking off his shirt to go for a swim in the ocean one expedition and Zelda taking approximately three days to recover from it.
Link sneaking up to her room from the Knights quarters in the castle because he knows she has nightmares when he isn’t close by. She told him about them when they were leaving Gerudo Desert.
Zelda accidentally tripping and falling into him and both of them nervously laughing and trying to regain composure as their pointed-ears blush red.
Zelda challenging Link to an arm wrestle when they’re at a stable and losing desperately, but she keeps asking for a rematch because its an excuse to hold his hand.
Link going easy on her one time and letting her win when he noticed she was getting frustrated and she never let him forget about it.
Link helping her in and out of the sacred springs so she wouldn’t slip, offering his hand as she walks into the water.
The two of them sitting next to one another in front of a camp fire, just close enough that their thighs are brushing against one another, both of them trying to stay calm.
Zelda looking at her reflection in the water and telling herself that he’ll never feel the same. He’s too dedicated to his duty to. Besides, why would someone as heroic and him ever have feelings for a failure like herself? He probably thinks of her as a chore, she must be delusional.
Link pressing his hands to his forehead as he lays down, scolding himself to repress his feelings and move on. He would never stand a chance with a Princess like herself. He could never be with someone as soft as her when he is this calloused and broken.

Zelink Relationship in Breath of the Wild
In early 2022, I started playing Breath of the Wild and to this day, this game manages to win me over in a way I never imagined in a game of the franchise. One of the things that fascinates me about the game, beyond the whole world and exploration, is the relationship between Zelda and Link.
Tumblr media
Notes:
This analysis is based on Zelda and Link's Diary cited in Breath of The Wild. Link's diary is quite subtle because, of the game's English translation but, I'll explain how it works.
In the game, there is a quest called "Captured Memories" where you have to go to various locations in Hyrule to recover your memories with Zelda from 100 years ago, which I will also use in the analysis.
The memories and the diaries in BOTW are crucial in deciphering the sentiment between Link and Zelda.
Part 1: Zelda's Feelings and Thoughts about Link
First Impressions of Link
First, let's talk about Zelda's feelings based on what we have in BotW. In BotW, precisely in Hyrule Castle, in Princess Zelda's room, it is possible to find Zelda's diary, where she expresses about how it was to meet the champions and about went to researched the ancient technology and below that she wrote "P.S. Tomorrow , my father is assigning HIM as my appointed knight..." and this "HIM", she refers to Link.
In the first memory of the game, we can see that Zelda wasn't happy with the idea of being followed and watched by Link.
Tumblr media
Zelda also brings up the fact that Link spends most of his time in silence, writing this in his diary:
"And still, not a word passes his lips. I never know what he's thinking! It makes my imagination run wild, guessing at what he is thinking but will not say. What does the boy chosen by the sword that seals the darkness think of me? Will I ever truly know? Then, I suppose it's simple. A daughter of Hyrule's Royal family yet unable to use sealing power...He must despise me."
In one of the memories, Zelda is angry to discover that Link has followed her, going so far as to yell at him and with that, she adds in her diary "He seemed confused by my anger."
Tumblr media
From that point on, this is where I believe her first impressions of Link were wrong because, after that memory comes another one where we see Zelda being chased by the Yiga Clan, then Link appears to save her.
Tumblr media
After that incident, she writes in her diary:
"I am unsure how to put today's events into words. Words so often evade me lately, and now more than ever. He saved me. Without a thougth for his own life, he protected me from the ruthless blades of the Yiga Clan . Though I've been cold to him all this time...taking my selfish and childish anger out on him at every turn... Still, he was there for me. I won't ever forget that. Tomorrow, I shall apologize for all that has transpired between us. And then...I will try talking to him. To Link. It's a worth a shot."
The beginning of a big friendship and love
This diary entry starts to make more sense with the next memory we see Zelda worrying about Link's safety while still berating him, after defeating several strong enemies.
From that point on, Zelda begins to treat Link in a more friendly manner and shows concern for him as well and we can see this in the memory where they are both riding a horse, while Zelda thanks Link for his advice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that, returning to her diary, Zelda writes the following:
"Bit by bit, I've gotten Link to open up to me."
"When I finally got around to asking why he's so quite all the time, I could tell it was difficult for him to say. But he did. With so much at stake, and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well... For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings. I always believed him to be simply a gifted person who had never faced a day of hardship. How wrong I was..."
and then, in the last sentences:
"I wish to talk with him more and to see what lies beneath those calm waters, to hear him speak freely and openly...And perhaps I, too, will be able to bare my soul to him and share the demons that have plagued me all the years."
And with that quote in her diary, we found out that yes, Link can talk in the game and that's quite interesting to add. Another very interesting thing to add is how Zelda talks about how one day she will give her soul to him. I looked it up and it means to tell someone tell your secret thoughts and feelings.
For all these years, Zelda has been pretending to be a person that her father (the King of Hyrule in BotW) wants him to be and even, she tried to open up to her father and this happens in one of the memories too, when he found out that she was taking a break from her training to try to awaken the sealed power but, instead of acting like a father, he acts rudely, saying that she should focus on her training instead of wasting time on silly things.
If we go to her father's diary entries, he says:
"The reason her sacred powers still won't awaken is because, she's speding all her efforts playing at being a scholar!"
With that, we realize that Zelda during those years was pressured by her father and was never able to open up to anyone. During two memories, we discover that she was unable to contact two of the goddesses, the goddesses of power and courage. With that, she also mentions that she will go to Mount Lanayru, in hopes of being able to speak with the Goddess of Wisdom but, once again, she is unsuccessful and we see this in the memory, where she returns with Link from Mount Lanayru.
Tumblr media
This is where things start to get interesting. Still in the same memory, Mipha speaks "If I may...I thought you...Well, I'm not sure how to put this into words...I'm actually quite embarrased to say it. But I was thinking about what I do when I'm healing. You know, what usually goes through my mind...It helps when I think-when I think about-"
Unfortunately, she isn't able to finish the sentence due to the Calamity Ganon waking up at the exact moment but, I strongly believe she meant "It helps when I think about..." (the person I deeply care about/love).
Skiping now to the last memory of the game, we see Link surrounded by several guardians while protecting Zelda. She begged him to run away and leave her to save himself but, Link wouldn't. About to die for the guardian, Zelda gets in front of Link to protect him and finally, after years without success, she finally manages to awaken her power.
Zelda ends up saving Link, sending him to the Shrine of Resurrection. 100 years later, when Link was fully healed, she aided him throughout Hyrule and helped him to defeat Ganon.
Tumblr media
After having sent Link to the Shrine of Resurrection, in other memorie, Zelda goes to Korok Forest with the Master Sword to the Great Deku Tree. During this they have a conversation and in this, Zelda says:
"Great Deku Tree, I ask you, when he return, can you please give this message...Tell him I-"
"Now, then...Words intended for him would sound much better in the tones of your voice, don't you think?"
"Yes."
We never learn what her next words were but, with that scene and for me, it's the last detail that proves that Zelda didn't have a reason to find the power inside her but, when she did find a reason, protecting the person who she cared/loved about, she was finally able to accept who she was and with that, she finally awakens her power and in the end, saves Hyrule from the Ganon Calamity. Until now, Zelda's feelings for Link were just a theory but, I discovered more solid evidence which clearly shows that Zelda is in love with Link. After you complete the game, in the village of Rito, you will meet Kass and he will tell you about his master, who was part of the Sheikah Tribe and who was in love with the princess, better known as Zelda, however, Kass himself mentions that "But the princess herself only had eyes for her escort, her own knight attendant."
More evidence, in the lyrics of the game's ending song it says "An ancient hero, a Calamity appears, Now resurrected after 10,000 years. Her appointed knight gives his life, Shields her figure, and pays the price. The princess's love for her fallen knight awakens her power. And within the castle, the Calamity is forced to cower" and with that, i say checkmate.
Part 2: Link's Feelings and Thoughts about Zelda
Intro
BotW world is an absolutely huge and expansive one that contains many secrets. Some of them may be obvious and can even be found in the game itself but, there are others that only you will be able to find if you do research outside the game.
Unlike the other diaries of the characters in the game, Link's diary is not found in any location in Hyrule but, in the side quests themselves but, this diary is only exclusive to the Japanese version. In other words, the version translated from Japanese to English, they decided to change and put the translation of the side quests in 3rd person but, in the original version, the Japanese one, the game presents the sides quests in the 1st person, that is, in the Japanese version of the game, the side quests are told from Link's own perspective and not the player's, thus creating a sort of Link's diary. blowing minds
But first, before talking about what Link thinks about Zelda, I think it's important to talk a little more about the character itself. In Hyrules Warriors: Age of Calamity, 100 years before the events of BotW, Link is introduced to us as a Silent Knight and Skilled Swordman who is renowned for his figthing skills courage and his devotion to the Royal family of Hyrule. Slowly but surely, Link is becoming much more expressive with his emotions as time progresses. In BotW, there is a cutscene where we see Zelda and Link riding their horses together. At this moment, Zelda thanks Link for his advice on how create a bond with her horse. This means that some point, Link must have shared his expertise on horses with Zelda, in order to help her to do that he needs to speak or at least, write it down for her, although we don't see this in game. It's very possible that Link directly spoke with Zelda here so, it's not like Link is incapable of speaking or of any communication at all, is just that he chooses not do but why? Well, the answer is in Zelda's own diary. In her diary, Zelda says the following:
"With so much at stake, and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well... For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings"
Link tells Zelda that the reason he doesn't speak is because, he feels it's necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burder so actually, our beloved protagonist has fell strong emotions all along, he had just decided to keep them all bottled to himself in order to appear reliable and strong to Zelda. What else can we find out about Link? What does he really think of Zelda? Well, Link actually has an extensive character description in BotW. We can find the answers to these questions and more as Zelda and the King of Hyrule aren't the only ones with diaries. Link has written a diary of his own.
Link's Diary
So, Link's diary where is it? Well, as I mentioned before, Link's diary is hidden in the side quests of the Japanese version of the game. In japanese version however the answer becomes clear all of the entries in the adventure log are entries that Link has written himself to keep track of his own adventure. The English version of the game, the journal entries are written in 3rd person and refer to the reader as you but, upon loading up the japanese version, instead of being written in 3rd person, the journal entries are written in 1st person from Link's prespective. All of the entries in the journal were written by Link but, the surprises aren't just limited to this in his diary. Link doesn't just record his current objetive, he also has written down some of his own thoughts and feelings. With a lot of views and yours in comparasion the same quest "Captured Memories", in the Japanese version can be translated to something like this:
"I've acquired the legendary Master Sword, the legendary blade of evil's bane. Somehow, I get the feeling that the sword itself is delighted that I've come to retritive it.
Zelda is still battling to supress the evil Ganon at this very moment...She believes that I will defintely come for her!
I wonder if...As I am now...Am I really strong enough to save her?"
While in the English version of the game, the quest is described like this:
"You've visited all 13 of the locations shown in the old pictures and recovered the associated memories of your days with Princess Zelda.
In your memories, Princess Zelda always seemed burdened by her task...
Go and save her as quickly as you can to finally ease that burden."
The quest text in the Japanese version essentially reintroduces Link to us as someone who has normal human emotions rather that the silent knight or silent hero decipted through the games knowing that the adventure log belongs to Link as his diary. Suddenly, the seemingly trivial text reveals more hidden sides to our hero, especially the last part "see her smile again with my own eyes". They completely omitted this from the English version it's words like these that add so much more to Link's character. After Link has conquered the lost woods by not getting lost, he reaches the inner sanctum of the forest where he meets the Deku Tree who has been guarding the Master Sword, legendary sword of evil spain. When Link has regained enough of his former strength, he pours the Master Sword from his pedestal. Once more, after he obtains the Master Sword, the adventure quest text for heroes in English versions, reads:
"You've acquired the legendary Master Sword, that which seals the darkness. You feel that the sword itself delights to be in your possession...
Even at this moment, Princess Zelda is within Hyrule Castle, figthing to suppress the Calamity. She endures, believing you will come for her...
Will you be able to save her as you are now?"
When comparing it to the Japanese version is quite similar apart from one word which points towards more evidence of Link being the author. A Japanese word can mean "myself" or "yourself" and it changes the text a first person's narrative. This means that the text would read something like:
"I've acquired the legendary Master Sword, the legendary blade of evil's bane. Somehow, I get the feeling that the sword itself is delighted that I've come to retritive it.
Zelda is still battling to supress the evil Ganon at this very moment...She believes that I will defintely come for her!
I wonder if...As I am now...Am I really strong enough to save her?"
With that, we can really get a feel for how strongly Link wants the power to be able to save Zelda. In the quest "Destroy Ganon", the last section in English is written:
"The ghost of King Rhoam told you that Hyrule is on the brink of annihilation.
Princess Zelda is currently fighting to contain Calamity Ganon inside Hyrule Castle, but her power cannot keep him at bay forever. Eventually, Ganon will regain his full strength and destroy the world.
Your ultimate task is to aid Princess Zelda in defeating Ganon before that can happen."
But, in the Japanese version is written:
"The spirit of the King of Hyrule has told me that the land is on the verge of being obliterated.
It won't be long until Princess Zelda reaches her limit in containing the destructive power of Ganon at Hyrule Castle. When she does, Ganon will completely regain his power and everything will come to an end.
I really hope I'll be able to save Princess Zelda before that happens..."
Link really wants to believe that he can stop Ganon, stop his power in time and puts an end to everthing. After falling once already, it's no surprise that he may have some doubt in his ability.
Happiness
I was given a bunch of gems from Hudson as a sign of his gratitude for everything that I've done for them so far.
After Link has helped Hudson's establish Tarrey Town and after Hudson's and Rhondson are married in the quest "From the Ground Up", Link shows us his warm-hearted side, he is glad for other people's happiness as a conclusion to from the ground up and in Japanese version, he writes:
"Hudson's and Rhondson's wedding ceremony has concluded and Tarrey Town is really prospering.
I wish those two can live in happiness together forever."
The English version like the others is again written in third person and is directed at telling you the player that you wish the couple eternal happiness rather than Link.
In the quest "Test of Will", Link is challenged by three Gorons to train his tolerance to extreme heat in an endurance contest. After besting the Gorons at their challenge, he records the events in his diary, adding a little of his own humor into the mix in his recorded entry, Link mimics the way Gorons speak by attaching Goro to the end of his sentences:
"Ah! Is that all I'm getting out of you, Kabeta brother Goro? That's too bad, Goro..."
While in the English version, it says:
"Oh, that's all from Kabetta? That's too bad, brother..."
Else, does Link think about Zelda? Well, he thinks her voice is really pretty. In the quest "Follow the Sheikah Slate", which Link recieves at the benning of the game, he seems to quite like Zelda's voice. The last part of the quest text, in English simply reads:
"From Hyrule Castle, off in the distance, you hear the woman's voice speaking to you again..."
In comparasion to the Japanese version, goes a little like this:
"From the top of that giant tower, I could once again hear a girls beautiful voice coming from the castle that looks so far away."
"Follow the Sheikah Slate" is another one of those quests that has had parts submitted in. It's English version counterpart the original is much more descriptive and it allows us to finally connect with Link and his feelings.
Thoughts of a Failed Hero
In BotW, Zelda and Link's relationship is quite the dynamic one. In the very first memory, we see Link who has been appointed as Zelda's knight by King Rhoam. In this cutscene/memory, Link is already welding the Master Sword with the weighty responsibility of being Zelda's personal knight as well being chosen as the hero by the Master Sword itself. There is no doubt that Link is under immense pressure and expectation here. Zelda and the others conduct the ceremony of legend to celebrate Link in fulfilling his destiny despite being a huge step towards spending off the Calamity. Zelda, as mentioned before, doesn't seems too enthusiactic and the whole thing feels tainted with despair. Zelda's resentment towards Link continues to worsen as her insecurities and fear of being unable to awaken her powers.
Urbosa points out that Zelda's, Link is a living reminder of her own failures. Like Link, Zelda is also under immense pressure and responsibility to protect Hyrule. Link dedicated himself to his nightly duties and was able to fulfill his destiny and wield the Master Sword. Whereas Zelda was always told that because she was born into the Royal family, she had to dedicate herself in awakening her powers. Urbosa tells Link that every time Zelda sees him, reminds her how she still hasn't achieved her own destiny.
Zelda and Link's relationship hits a turning point when Link saves Zelda from the Yiga Clan. Zelda and Link begin to develop a genuine bond, Zelda realizes that she is not the only one with doubts, she had originally thougth that Link's silent and stiff behavior was a result of him not liking her but actually, as mentioned earlier, it's because he feels it's necessary to stay strong and silently bear any burden. Zelda's thought that Link's sucess was purely out of natural talent. In her diary, Zelda's says:
"When I finally got around to asking why he's so quite all the time, I could tell it was difficult for him to say. But he did. With so much at stake, and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well... For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings. I always believed him to be simply a gifted person who had never faced a day of hardship. How wrong I was..."
Zelda feels guilty for how she had been treating Link so, she tries to talk to him which results in a significant improvement in their relationship. In part 1, we've seen all about what Zelda thinks about Link, but what about Link himself? What does he think of all this?
Still determined to get stronger, Link once again visits the Deku Tree in the Lost Woods. Link returns the Master Sword to his pedestal and is thrown into "The Trial of the Sword" quest where he must survive an onslaught of enemies, starting with none of his own equipament. After finally conquering all 51 merciless levels and making it through to the very end, Link is rewarded with a full powered Master Sword. After he has awakened the Master Sword's full potential, the quest text for try of the Master Sword, in English version reads like this:
"You conquered the merciless Trial of the Sword!
You now have the physical and mental strenght necessary to use the Master Sword to its full potential.
Princess Zelda is no doubt quite happy with your achievement."
But, in Japanese version is a little different:
"I've conquered the relentless Trial of the Sword.
I've obtained the physical and mental strenght necessary to control the full power of the Master Sword.
I'm sure that Princess Zelda would also paise me for how much I've grown."
After enjoying countless hardships and striving to get stronger for so long, it is not until this quest that Link is finally pround of himself and has enough confidence in his ability to face Zelda.
In one of the memories, we see both Zelda and Link running, through the rain, fleeing Hyrule Castle. Meanwhile, Zelda ends up slipping her hand from Link's and ends up tripping. This scene is further proof that Link has feelings for her and that he clearly cares about her. After Zelda says that death of the Champions, her father, the Divine Beasts was her fault, it cuts to this scene where, you clearly get the sad expression on Link's face. If he didn't like her, I don't think he'd stop running to hear her.
With all this vent, Zelda simply surrenders in Link's arms, who accepts her without hesitation or thinking twice.
Tumblr media
Then, after defeating Ganon and at the end of the game, Zelda finally granted Link's greatest wish, giving a beautiful smile to Link.
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading this far. 😊 Really, it was one of the longest and most laborious analyses I've ever done so far but, it was worth it because, it made me love this ship more and see Zelink in other perspective.

LoZ - Yiga!Link is a Riot
I gotta say that the concept of Yiga!Link is effing hilarious. Especially if it's Zelink.
Because, think about it.
In this situation, Ganon has literally everything lined up perfectly. Link, his eons-long, multi-life arch-nemesis is essentially his minion & he likely doesn't even know it.
Kid's probably deep into the sauce too, man.
Then, either along comes this pretty little princess & he's like, "yeah, sorry bro, but I'm gettin' me some of that." Maybe he was kidnapped as a baby & Link & Zelda met previously as kids? Maybe she did something for him that he'd never forgotten, then when they remeet, she does something for him that seals a huge crush on her, & thus can't bring himself to kill her? I dunno, there's a lot of ways this could go. OR, he learns personally that he's the Chosen Hero, the very person he's supposed to despise & kill. Meaning that if the other members learn about it, they'll likely kill him. His whole life comes crashing down around him. The first blow to the cult's programming.
Like, it'd just be such a power move on destiny's part.
Like, as dangerous as Ganon obviously is, he simply does not win for very long. He always looses eventually.
And this would just cement that fact. Like, he had his effing arch-nemesis in the palm of his fucking hand & didn't even know it & he'll still fucking lose.
I dunno about you, but I'd be pretty damn demoralized after that.
I might just need the next 10,000 years dead before my next reincarnation to mentally recover.
---
At the same time, it does make me wonder. Why do non-Sheikah Yiga stick with them? Like, we know the reason why the Yiga was originally formed. A Hylian King from 10,000 years ago forced the Sheikah to decommission their technology, fearing it'd bring about Hyrule's demise. (Which, despite how unfair it was, he was... actually right. Makes me wonder if he actually learned that the Sheikah Tech could be taken over. Maybe he'd been an accomplished mage & had managed to use his magic to take control of the machines, then realizing that he likely wouldn't be around for the next Calamity, he ordered the Sheikah to find a way to prevent the machines from being possessed by magic. But no matter what they did, they couldn't manage to figure it out, or maybe they did for a while, but the king kept testing them to make sure it was fixed. However, much like hacking in real life, there will always be new ways to exploit the system, thus the king was left with no choice but to decommission them.)
But, anyway, what exactly do they tell their members to get them to want to stay? Hell, why were they even still a thing in BotW? Why hadn't they made their move? There were no more guards, or soldiers, only a few trained Sheikah, all of which were either too old to keep fighting or were swiftly getting there, & there'd been no royal family besides Zelda, who was keeping Calamity Ganon sealed away.
Why didn't they take over the rest of Hyrule, asserting their dominance & killing all the loyalists so that when the Hero returned, he'd be an outlaw, thus making his journey harder? (It certainly wouldn't have been the first time something like that would've happened in the series.) In fact, why reveal themselves to him when they meet? Just wait till his back is turned, then Eightfold Blade him in the back! Or have a Yiga replace the Sheikah & Hylian innkeepers/Stable Managers, then when Link rents a bed for the night, give him a poisoned complementary meal! Then, when he collapses, just execute him!
It's that easy! Or it should be, because they're effing ninja!
I mean, they were perfectly fine with killing Dorian's wife, who Dorian had been a member of the Yiga before, thus they've no issue with the act of killing.
Which, btw, why didn't they instead kidnap her, maybe even his daughters too, & use them as blackmail to keep him under their thumb?

HW Zelink, you say…
Would you possibly be interested in a little snippet of a piece I’ve been working on?
~~~~
She’s not sure where they stand these days, in terms of their… relationship.
They were confidants, during her abrupt seizure of the throne and his promotion, but quickly progressed to friends. Good friends.
They’ve been in this position before- her laying next to him, him half asleep and groggy.
It had started slowly- merely seeing him at meetings, to discuss strategy, to observe him.
Then she’d slowly found herself seeking his company, the lightness that he brought her that no one else did. He’d given her something she hadn’t had in a long time- hope. But it’s not only that.
He’s kind, charming, yes, a little arrogant, but he’s toned it down to confidence and he’s rightfully so, and he makes her laugh.
Back when he’d gotten injured… a knife to the rib cage… she had gone to visit him.
Found him fighting the haze of painkillers, sweating and panicked as he desperately tried to stay awake.
He’d refused to sleep until she was there with him, his hand in hers. That was the first shift in their relationship.
Once he’s healed, he visits her late in the night.
Nothing was said for a long while as she gazed over map after map after map, and he wrote condolence letter after condolence letter after condolence letter to parents who would never again see their children, wives who would never again see their husbands, children who would never again see their fathers.
“I think we just need to risk an all out seizure on the castle.” She says finally, sighing.
It’d be costly- lots of people would die- but… it’s their last hope to try to win this war. If they manage to get the castle, it’ll have to be the end.
Ganondorf would be forced to surrender.
And without plague spreading through their soldiers, their numbers higher than ever… now would be the best time.
He stands silently, peering over her shoulder to look at the maps and reports she’s written up.
His eyes take a while to make sense of the words, she knows he still struggles with reading, but eventually he nods.
Points to where the third artillery is stationed, pointing to the castle next.
“My thoughts exactly. Third artillery has been the best at seizures. We need them… probably the fifth, too… the real question is which one or two to leave out.”
“Six.” Link says quietly, and she startles at the rare sound of his voice. He doesn’t speak much.
But she nods slowly. “Sixth… makes sense, youngest group, fresh out of training… save them in case…”
“And we want the first on the front lines if we’re able to. See how many people that gives us, if it’s less than… twenty five thousand, put the first with us at the castle.”
She quickly finds her numbers, adds up the math…
“This might work.” She breathes, leaning her head back and slouching in her chair.
Gives a chokes laugh, moving her hands to smile at him. “This might work. Link… we can win. We can win this.”
He’d taken her hand, given her a rare smile. This is the second shift in their relationship.
“I know we will with you leading us.” He’d said softly, and despite herself, the composure she’s been taught all her life, her cheeks flush and she looks away.
But smiles.
The last one was when she was sick.
Right after the war, on their way back from returning the master sword, she’d fallen ill.
Bedridden with a fever that quickly spiked, grew worse.
She was isolated other than one maid who was providing her needs, but Link sneaks into her tent one bad night when fever dreams and uncontrollable tremors are keeping her awake.
“You shouldn’t be here.” She rasps, coughing uncontrollably with the words.
“Shh… you know me, I’m a rebel.” He smiles, getting her some water, and she chokes again as she laughs.
Replaces the cool compress on her forehead, which instantly makes her feel about ten times better.
And even more so when he takes a chair and sits at the side of her sick bed, talking and just making her smile despite her misery until she manages to drift off.
He’s still there when she wakes in a panic, thrashing and in tears. Calms her down, reassuring her gently, coaxing her back to sleep.
Part of her thinks that’s been their biggest jump- after that, she’d started waking him when she’d had nightmares.
Leaves her room, going down to his quarters, waking him- which usually means also calming him down- dragging him up to her room in the dead of night.
He never seems to mind.
One night, after a particularly bad nightmare, she’s feeling particularly brave and is laying in his arms.
“Why do you never wake me after nightmares?” She asks him in a whisper, and his hands pause in her hair.
“Well… a lot of times I’m just… paralyzed for a minute or two. Thought it’s frightening… it gives me a minute to calm myself and remind myself that you- everything’s fine and it was just a dream.”
“That sounds awful.” She mumbles, eyes slowly closing. “You should wake me. If you wanted, of course.”
She can feel him nod. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
She’s too tired to reply, and she drifts off soon after that. That’s the morning Impa had busted them, walking into her room to wake her and screaming in a very un-Impa like way when she saw Link, there, too.
After they’d both finished laughing, she’d lectured their ears off about making smart choices and how the future of Hyrule was no joke and they must think about how this will end once they have to decide on a king.
Their insistence that there was nothing between them fell on deaf ears.
It was a hundred times worth it to see Link laugh like that- careless, breathless and gasping, nearly falling off the bed he was laughing so hard.
Even Impa had been unable to contain a smile.
She’d never seen him that happy- and she has yet to see it again. But she hopes someday she’ll be able to.
After that, he had started waking her. Only a few times, still not nearly to the amount that she woke him, but she felt better about it all the same.
She’d woken up to her door opening, soft footsteps, someone sitting at the edge of her bed, a shaky sigh.
“C’mere.” She mumbles, and feels Link jump.
But he lays next to her, trembling ever so slightly.
Wraps her in his arms, sighing slowly and shakily.
Her hand finds his hair groggily, fingers brushing through it.
“You’re ok.” He whispers, squeezing her gently.
“I’m ok.” She repeats softly, and they’re silent for a while. She thinks he falls asleep, slowly relaxing and falling still.
She must fall asleep, too, because next thing she knows she’s waking up with the sun streaming through her curtains.
Impa let her sleep in… that’s odd.
But she won’t complain. Just slowly reaches to take Link’s hand, thumb brushing over the mark of the triforce on the back.
He shifts sleepily, eyes fluttering but not quite opening.
“Link.” She says softly, squeezing his hand gently.
Bright blue eyes squint blearily, humming softly in question.
“Time to get up, rise and shine.”
He groans, sighing, but sits up and rubs his eyes.
Averts his eyes as she dresses herself- she no longer lets her maids do it- then leaves the room with her.
He’s still in his sleep clothes, yawning as he stumbles back down to his quarters and into his room.
She waits in the hall for a moment, and then they head to the library together.
As the throne room was destroyed during their final siege, it’s where she does most of her work.
Relieved of his duties for a short while, Link just opts to join her.
And that had led them to where their relationship stands now.
Laying next to Link, in a couch that was not nearly large enough for the both of them, curled up under a thin blanket.
Without her intention, her eyes slip shut and she does actually doze off, listening to Link softly hum next to her.
So I've now been to both Tarrey Town and Hateno Village in Tears of the Kingdom (spoilers for both locations), and have some thoughts on Zelda's house.
Now the Zelink girlies out there, bless their hearts, will take this as a win. That Link and Zelda share a house and live together. And I'm not denying it might be. Except that I sorta am maybe and here's an overly long and unnecessary explanation that no one asked for as to why:
There's a few bits of conflicting evidence, even beyond most village NPCs in Hateno not knowing Link (which I'm dismissing since a decent chunk of npcs don't know you anymore). Largely, in my eyes, the school and the house cleaner, since those are npcs I feel like should know Link if he's a regular
The guy running the school explains to Link that this was something Zelda founded and worked hard on, and all the children love her. If he's been in town enough to live in that house with her, or has been tailing her around in their daily lives, why wouldn't he already know about this huge project she was undertaking? Wouldn't the school teacher already know that he knows?
Secondly, the house cleaner has no idea who Link is. If someone regularly cleans a well used house, wouldn't they have a pretty decent idea of who lives there? If she doesn't recognize the sight of Link despite arguably being the person with the closest proximity to the house, then for me that's a stronger argument that he doesn't live there regularly. This npc would have been a good chance for Nintendo to mention if they did live together, like if she said "oh! Link! I'll stay out of your way" or something simple like that, but no.
And finally, I mentioned I went to Tarrey Town, and that's because there's a quest there about building your dream home. Why would Link build a multi room house if he already had a house somewhere else? Overindulgence?
In my brain, here's how things went: after the Calamity, Link took Zelda back to his house bc where else was she supposed to go? I'm assuming, at that point, Link gives the house over to her with the understanding that he can return and rest there whenever needed (and also lent her a hair tie). After she settles down a bit, she alternates her time between researching in the village and going across Hyrule to help with rebuilding. When Zelda's at Hateno, Link's either exploring or helping with restoration, whatever means he's not there. And when Zelda's out of Hateno, he's following her around.
This explains both how Zelda sees Link as reliably always there with her and yet no one in her base town of operations knows him, as well as why it's called "Zelda's house" and not something that mentions both of them, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Also no, I don't ship this Zelda and Link bc I mostly ship Zelda/A Nap and Link/Getting A Freaking Break, but no hate to anyone who does because there is evidence there. I just think the house evidence is less "this is proof that they live together and are married" and more of "Link gave up his house yet still is welcome there, read the intentions and implications as you will." Idk 🤷‍♀️
Brambles congrats!!! How about oot zelink staying up late?
Ask First
Link wouldn’t fall asleep—he would not—not with Sheik standing there looking so smug with those red eyes on him; that was definitely a smirk under that mask, and if Link wasn’t such a nice guy he’d have something snarky to say about it after this huge yawn.
“I’m going to win again,” Sheik said with even smirkier eyes—“that’s yawn seventeen and it’s only 3:51 am.”
Link made a face—“How the heck do you know it’s exactly- WHAT?!” Link cried as he watched a stone with a weeping eye rocket itself into the air, Sheik remaining unreasonably calm as it did; Link had to be dreaming (and had therefore already lost), so he shrugged, closed the distance between them, gently tugged that pesky mask down, and kissed Sheik—and got a nasty palm-strike to the chest: “YOU DON’T ASK FIRST?!”
----
Epilogue: “NO FLIRTING, NO WARNING, NO NOTHING?!” “I thought I was asleep!” “What, you only kiss in your sleep?” “Yes! NO!” “I’ve never had a boyfriend who wouldn’t kiss me while conscious.”  “That’s not- wait, what?” “We’re still playing, by the way.”
----
[Thanks for the fun ask, Ace! 😄]
The Dumpster Fire
(Updated 5/23/23)
➳ The Legend of Zelda
Chapter Fics:
Forgotten Instincts : (Rated: Explicit) Having been torn from Hylia and her sealing power, Zelda travels with Link as a companion to appease the corrupted Divine Beasts, but she must hide her identity because his memory is gone and mentality hanging by a thread. She has to live under an alias until his memory returns, even if that means he’s falling in love with the woman she’s pretending to be.
Angst / Smut / Romance / Comical / Slow Burn
How Wild It Is To Be: (Rated: Mature) Zelda’s been attending NHU for two years now, living life to the fullest in the lively, but secluded, northern city of Deku, and Link is a brand new transfer student trying to start everything over. He grew tired of the life that was laid out for him; following in his father’s footsteps, carrying the burdening title of Hyrule’s Champion, and committing to a relationship that was bound to fail. He’s looking for a new path to wander at NHU and maybe, just maybe, he’ll find himself somewhere between the luscious evergreens of Deku and the artsy bookseller with those bewitching green eyes.
College AU / Nostalgic / Drama / Personal Growth / Romance
Something Wicked This Way Comes: (Rated: Teen) Written with the lovely pastelsandpining. It seemed just like any other year when Link pushed his trolley of cluttered luggage through Platform 9¾. His final year at Hogwarts had to be memorable somehow and he was determined to make the most of it, whether it was leading his team to win the Quidditch trophy or pranking the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to wit’s end, Link was determined to make it count. What he didn’t expect, however, was to have his entire muggle-born life flipped upside down when a flustered French girl stomped into his train compartment.
Hogwarts AU / Magical / Hopelessly Romantic / Comedy / Pining
Signed, Sealed, Delivered: (Rated: Explicit) Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays Link from the swift completion of his appointed rounds. Except when he receives a gift in the mailbox from the woman he’s got the hots for.
Shameless Smut / Bad Puns / Lingerie / Happy Holidays Everyone
Congrats!!!! How about some ST Zelink with Zelda resting her head on Link's shoulder?
Hello @linktheacehero!! Thank you so much for sending in this wonderful prompt!
At the Top of the Tower | Drabbles Masterlist
Their legs dangled off the Tower’s highest floor, wind gusting through their lungs and hair, carrying Zelda’s cackling laughter away, and helping to cool the blush that furiously spread across his cheeks, “Zelda! Don’t tease me over the rabbits anymore! I already admitted they're cute, you don't have to rub it in so much!”
“Oh but I do Link, I do, because who was the one who teased me over the rats? Was that me? No, that was you!” she jeered, knocking her elbow into him and he rammed a hand through his hair, annoyed that she’d gotten the better of him yet again.
No, he couldn’t let her win so easily, “SPIRITS! I already apologised for that and you have to admit it was funny, you in your huge phantom get-up and you still jumped in fear even if you could have trampled all over those little buggers –” He suddenly caught sight of the setting sun, “Oh! Look at the time! Zelda we probably have to –”
“Don’t,” she whispered, and shuffled closer, her head on his shoulder, “I don’t want this to end, not yet. You’ll go to the snow realm after this and it’ll be at least two weeks before I can punch your dorky cheeks again…” he chuckled, ah, only she could say such contradictory things, before his head leaned on hers, and his hand came to hold her own, giving in to stay a little longer, for he always was incapable of saying no to her.
Flight
Zelink Week 2021 prompt #3/7 @zelinkweek2021
Word Count: 1,874
Incarnation: Skyward Sword (pre)
Additional Prompts Followed: Loftwings, Free Fall
Trigger Warnings: near-death experience, broken bone trauma
The Loftwings flew in perfect circles, their flight at all times parallel to each other as they followed the tail of the other, again, and again, blue and red and red and blue, crimson and purple and red and blue. It was an eternal race that none would win.
And it was obvious there would be no champion, as the loftwings were carved from wood and flew only by mechanism, circling like hawks above the crib of a child with shining blue eyes and honey-blonde hair. She laughed and giggled at the sight of Loftwings in flight, reaching out stubby hands as if to lazily reach for the illusion. She gabbled and her mouth buzzed a particular “v” sound. Her smile was infectious.
But nine years later, she frowned, stomping towards the plaza in the midst of a tantrum, fists balled and shoulders up to her ears.
Her father once told her that friends come and go but not him, never him, never that way. A new, more exciting best friend and he was up and away without a care in the world, not a single look of concern for the friend he left in his dust.
Her father told her not five minutes ago that her time would come as well, that she too would be matched with a Loftwing when the time came. Link merely was a few months older than her.
But the damage was done. Gaepora had already gone on and on about how splendid the match was between the rare Crimson Loftwing and Link, how the connection was uncanny, and how it usually takes years of training for someone to fly their bird like that. Zelda was green with envy and it did not become her.
She was jealous even now as she watched Link, her pale pink dress swishing in the breeze. Zelda wondered that perhaps if she had worn her blue dress, Link would not have forgotten her, perhaps her lavender, or her yellow, perhaps her hair in braids or perhaps her forehead covered by bangs that she saw some of the older girls wearing. Yet, of all the colors and all the options, green seemed to stick out the most when people saw her at the ceremony, her brow shaded with envy as the ten-year old boy with a cream shirt and patched brown pants just hopped upon his fancy, new Crimson Loftwing.
Zelda hated as well that she couldn’t even chase him down, couldn’t just hop on her own Loftwing and ask what was so insignificant about her for Link to fly away in such a rude manner, leaving his best friend behind. Gaepora didn’t think it rude at all, as the boy had literally smiled at Zelda before testing out this unique bond with his Loftwing, but Zelda saw it as the end of the world.
Her own Loftwing.
She bet she could ride a Loftwing just as well, and she bet that the Goddess Hylia knew she was more than ready. She bet that the Goddess was just as upset as her, and she bet that there already was a Loftwing in the skies for her, just for her, maybe even rarer than the crimson breed. She bet all of that on her life, foolishly employing her little nine-year-old legs and running off the edge of the island in the sky, believing completely that her Loftwing would come below her.
Her own Loftwing.
The free fall was exhilarating and she enjoyed it. Never before had she felt so unrestrained, so rebellious.
Her own Loftwing.
So she whistled, wanting to chase that feeling atop a Loftwing, to ride the rims of the clouds and pursue the horizon, to wonder at what laid beneath the clouds like everyone secretly did.
No Loftwing came.
She whistled again, but she was reaching the clouds. Fear twinged a chord in her heart and the note was sour. Her confidence wavered. No one survived a fall to the clouds. No one.
Her mother, Link’s father, Groose’s uncle, Cawlin’s sister, Stritch’s cousin.
None of them ever returned.
What was she thinking?
No Loftwing came.
She felt the wind knocked out of her and she almost upchucked her lunch into the blue skies that she was being lifted from, Loftwing talons secure around her small frame and the occasional red feather drifting across her eye-line.
She tried to flip over to look up at Link, but the hold on her was too tight. So she just laid limp like a doll, basking in the wind of her stupidity and thinking that maybe, just maybe, what she did wasn’t the best idea.
Link had never rescued someone before, so he was more than relieved when his Loftwing caught Zelda without a flinch of hesitation. He had even braved looking down to make sure she was okay, before setting his sights on Skyloft, on the Plaza where he would drop her off and make sure she really was okay.
Yet the Loftwing let go sooner than Link expected. They were much too high for it to be a soft landing on Zelda’s part and the shrill cry that ensued because of it told Link everything, his insides churning with worry.
“Zelda!” He practically jumped off the Loftwing as soon as it was close enough to the ground of the Plaza and he ran, ran with all his might to the little girl who sat clutching her bent leg and crying into her knee. Link knelt before her, panting.
“Zelda, are you okay?”
There were legends of a blue flame, that burned hotter and brighter than any fire hued red. Link didn’t think such a thing existed until Zelda looked up, her eyes enraged and fuming.
His lips parted. He wasn’t sure what to do and before he could think to do anything Zelda had balled a fistful of dirt and thrown it in his face, before returning to her kneecap and shaking and crying and whimpering.
“Okay,” Link said in response to the dirty welcome. “I’m sorry. The Loftwing and I are both new at this. I’m sorry we dropped you and…well…I wanted to take you with me on my first ride but you’re not allowed to take someone with you that doesn’t have their own Loftwing. If something happens your passenger has to be able to take the reins, or call their own Loftwing to ride to safety. It’s a rule and you know it.”
Zelda shook her head.
“No?” Link asked, trying to understand, but she kept shaking her head.
“Link,” she said incredibly weakly. “Hylia above, it hurts so much.”
Link scooted closer, lifting his hands slightly but not knowing where to put them.
“Where?” He asked. “Where does it hurt?”
Zelda spent the moment after the question just trying to breathe, to award her lungs stable breaths that they sorely needed. Link tried to be patient, tried to give her the time to tell him what was wrong, but for some reason he needed to know now.
He took a guess and lifted the hem of her pale pink dress slightly, revealing something that hurt his heart and made his entire body wince.
It was no doubt that her leg was broken, Link could see the horrid swelling that almost looked like another calf, that ebbed with hues of red and purple. Link didn’t know if he was going to cry or throw up first.
“Oh goddess, okay, I’m gonna get you some help,” he said. Zelda nodded as he picked her up, and neither had time to be surprised at Link’s strength.
By the time they reached the headmaster’s office, Link was in tears and Zelda had passed out from the pain. Link went on and on apologizing to the headmaster, expressing his guilt over literally breaking the daughter of the tall, orange and red-clad man. Gaepora, however, wouldn’t have it, telling Link that a daughter of the headmaster should have known better than to let her jealousy consume her, but ultimately the priority now was to get her treated.
Potions were acquired immediately from the Bazaar and Zelda slept like a baby as she healed. Link grasped her hand with the intention of being there all night long, of letting her know wordlessly that her friend was here and that she was okay. He wanted to be there in case she woke up, in case she was scared, in case she...
“Link.”
The booming voice of the Headmaster was what told Link that he, too, was dozing off. The wooden chair must have been more comfortable than he previously thought.
Gaepora smiled at Link’s big blue eyes. He walked forward with the large strides of a grown-up and Link was almost impressed that someone could be that tall. Gaepora held out his hand.
“I think you would be more comfortable in your own bed.”
“But…”
“Zelda will be fine,” Gaepora said in the most calming voice he could muster. Link’s next breath brought his eyes down and he nodded. Link looked over at Zelda and smiled.
“I’ll see you in the morning sleepyhead,” Link said. “I promise.”
Link returned his big eyes to Gaepora and took his large hand, the headmaster leading the orphan to his room downstairs and treating the lad like he always had.
Like a son.
The next morning was one of the few where Link got up on his own, where he didn’t sleep in for hours and was in fact excited by the prospect of morning. Most ten-year old boys got up early to fly their new Loftwing, but Link was far more concerned with another friend, one that he had known much longer, one that was sitting up with a bowl of oatmeal when he entered her room.
Link beamed a smile, and so did Zelda.
“Zelda!” Link exclaimed, entering the room completely and approaching her. “H-how are you feeling?”
“Better,” she replied. “It hurts a lot less, but I should probably stay off it for a while.”
“Yeah,” Link agreed, nodding. He looked at her leg, braced with packs of ice and resting on a stack of soft pillows. It looked far more painful than she was letting on and remembering how it looked yesterday, Link doubted it could be anywhere near “better” this quickly, even with potions.
“I’m sorry.”
They both said it at the same time, so their heads snapped to each other.
“Zelda, I broke your leg,” Link said abruptly. “What in the clouds are you sorry for?”
“You broke my leg?” Zelda questioned, not believing her ears. “Goodness sake, Link, it was my fault, not yours. I should be thanking you for saving my life. I shouldn’t have tried to get my Loftwing, I…”
She stopped herself, and looked down at the patterned blankets she was in.
“I thought getting a new best friend would make you as jealous as I was.”
It was nothing more than an ashamed mumble, but Link heard it well, taking a couple steps to sit on the edge of her bed. He took her hand.
“No one will ever replace you as my best friend,” Link insisted. “Do you understand me?”
Zelda nodded and breathed a sigh of relief.
“Yes.”
