Uh, let’s see, random made-up fanfic title…
Don’t Be The Hero, Be My Hero
(I kicked ideas around for like AT LEAST 10 minutes before coming up with this idea and settling on it. It does feel a little vague, or open to interpretation, but I feel really proud of it.)
I know Sam and Max and Legend of Zelda and would be most interested in that, could also get myself invested in a Sonic fanfic because I’m dipping my toes into that pool, don’t know much about DSAF or Invader Zim beyond the surface to really get into a fanfic about those.
Oooo, I like this one [for the record all of these would be one shots]
For Sam and max, I immediately think of a standard 305 fic, either Sam pleading with max [or like his super ego British guy] to just let them save him, but Max. Y'know, it's inevitable, Max's super ego is too stubborn, too set on the idea of being an altruist to make up for all the times Max never listened to him, and Sam is just. Forced to leave him behind. He knows Max knows he hates that the city is being destroyed, but Max is his world and he wouldn't care if it meant he kept Max - this fic could either end when Sam goes to check on Sybil after Max's super ego just won't budge, or right after Max blows up, before Sam leaves to take a walk.
I see very easily why this could be legend of Zelda [heroes duh] but tthere's likem so many way this could be taken with every version of Zelda being sad over link, so let me instead offer a role reversal. Specifically, let me offer something about bots and totk, despite having not finished the game - from what I'm aware of, Zelda dies, never makes it into the future again and stuck in the past? Maybe becomes the blonde dragon? So a fic about link mourning his Zelda, a Zelda that knew so much of him and yet he got to spend so little time of, leaving her time against her will and never being able to see her knight again. Zelda is the only one who knew of the link in the past that he could talk to, and when she died, a part of him died as well, for the second time and permanently. And in case I'm wrong about that, it could be a fic of link slowly finding the memories of Zelda after his reawakening, and the title of the fic is the last line, and the first line of dialogue Link speaks, whispering into Zeldas shoulder after defeating dark ganon, pleading with her to never risk herself for hyrule again [something that would be happy, but is turned bittersweet by totk existing] honorable mention here is a fic about shadow breaking the mirror in the four swords manga, maybe a vioshadow fanfiction because god im a sucker for that, as much as i am a sucker for all 5 of them being brothers [though obviously those two headcanons can't coexist]. Might actually write that later I'll update this post if if I do.
Also, a sonic fic would definitely be tails, though I'm having trouble thinking of exactly where in the timeline, maybe after the whole dark Gaia thing and sonic not being able to sleep and all of that. Tails just wants him to stop focusing on everything else, to focus on himself for once. Or actually that would work really well for sonic boom, just pick your most hated episode and put it as a fluff one shot after that.

It's been a long time coming but I can finally introduce you all to my Zelda! I have to say I'm SO happy with how she came out. She's so chonky and cuteeee!~~
When I first had the idea of making her cubby, I knew I had to do it or else I would have regretted it and I'm happy that I went through with it. I hope you guys like her as much has I do!
Anyway with that out of the way let me tell you a bit about her
--------
As I stated in my previous post, Zelda's family in this Au are not royalty, but rather very wealthy citizens. While zelda does still posses her abilities from before, it's weak compared to her previous incarnations due to her mother still being alive (who is also named Zelda but goes by Celeste)
I know this isn't canon to Zelda lore but I decided that her and her mother both share the same abilities. Had her mother already passed away (or whenever she eventually does in the future) the powers will then transfer completely to Zelda herself, giving her full control of the blessing she should have. Until then her mother and her work together to help assist the "Leaders"(will elaborate on that in a later post)
Zelda herself, is a huge lover of nature, she has a giant garden a bit of ways away from hyrule castle town that she tends to every single day. She has a huge green thumb so that place thrives. Because of this green thumb, Link nicknamed her Gaia, a name that she happily goes by.
Even though she isn't royalty, she does still have a public image to uphold hence the fancy dress and appearance. She doesn't really like wearing these clothes but has grown used to it and sucks it up.
She does have a few extra pounds on her, but few people judge her vocally for it, mostly because her mother is a relentless woman who is super protective of her daughter and doesn't take anyone slandering her name, much to Zelda's happiness. So most judging comes silent, but she doesn't let it get to her. She likes her body just the way it is.
She worries a ton about Link and hates that he has to constantly go out and fight monsters because he always comes back with new scars that she frets over. Link is the one who started calling her the mom friend, a label she doesn't deny.
--------
Ok I think that's enough about zelda for now! I hope you guys enjoy her. I'll see you guys later!
Next: Master Sword and Aurous Swords Pt.2
After: Introducing???

I’ve seen some people saying they don’t understand why Sonic was placed in the Sacred Land within the Dark Realm.
While I don’t think there’s a definitive reason as to why, I also think there’s some sense to it. Sonic rested near Zelda and the Triforce Altar. Considering Sonic’s true heart, he would seem worthy of being there. In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic didn’t let himself succumb to Dark Gaia’s influence. His positive power also helped him use the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Perfect Chaos. Sonic has risked his life countless times to save people and he even died trying to save Pikachu in Smash Ultimate. He’s the definition of a hero.
It’s not like Sonic hasn’t saved princesses before. Plus, he’s even been to Hyrule!
Tumblr media
tl;dr - Sonic’s placement in the Sacred Land may seem strange, but there is some bizarre logic to it if you think about it. Even so, it’s a stretch.

As both oprainfall’s resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, cause sometimes the cup runneth over for indie fans, and sometimes it doesn’t. Thankfully, it veritably overflowed today, with nearly 20 games announced for a variety of genres. It was both old games coming to the Nintendo Switch, as well as entirely new and exclusive games. There’s a lot to cover, and a lot of reasons to be excited. So I’ll give a brief snippet of each title covered, in the order they were revealed, as well as release info. Buckle up, boys and girls.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
First up was an announcement that made me smile and groan at the same time. Creepy milk commercial aside, Cuphead is officially heading to the Nintendo Switch on April 18th. The reason I’m groaning is cause I already bought this on Steam, but would much prefer it on Switch. So I guess Studio MDHR gets my money twice. You can pre-purchase the game as of today, though it officially launches on April 18th, bringing beautifully animated chaos to your system.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Next up is Overland, a squad focused, turn-based apocalyptic strategy game. It looks like it has elements of tactical RPGs and a bit of Oregon Trail ethos, where you can’t save everyone. Since it’s set in such a dangerous climate, it shouldn’t surprise you that the farther west you go, the weirder things get. This randomly generated adventure is heading to the Switch this Fall.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I’m very happy that My Friend Pedro is finally heading to the Switch this June. I’m even more surprised that they announced it was a console exclusive, since the last time I demoed it, I could have sworn it was also headed to PS4 and PC. Regardless, if you love frenetic, coordinated violence on a comical scale and talking bananas, you’ll love this one.

I got to play Neo Cab at E3 last year, and I’m glad to hear it’s coming out soon. This visually distinct game involves trying to reunite with your best friend in a future ruled by a dystopian megacorporation. You’re the last human driver in city overrun by automation, and your job is to drive folks around while staying calm and unveiling the mysteries of the city. Neo Cab is out later this Summer.
When I heard this next game was about dog racing, I almost skipped it. But then I saw that The Red Lantern is narrative driven and has an interesting overall style. Developed by Timberline Studio, in the game you’ll engage in the Iditarod, fight the wilderness, tend your dogs, mend wounds and hunt to survive. Fend off bear attacks and get to your destination alive. Oh and if you like gyro controls, The Red Lantern has those as well. This unique adventure is out later this year.

I don’t normally think of top down when I think of survival horror, but Darkwood looks to be a strange and eerie adventure. In this title you’ll craft weapons, explore hideouts and hunker down at night while praying for the sun as monsters hunt you. Darkwood is also procedurally generated, so every time will be different. If that sounds like your cup of tea, it’s out this May.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Personally, I adore the style of Katana Zero. It has lush pixelated charm and lots of action. You play as Dragon the assassin. Armed with precognition, you will manipulate time and leave no witnesses. One hit and you’re dead though, but thankfully the game rewinds levels when you lose. And on the random side of things, in between missions you’ll talk with a therapist to get over your demons. Katana Zero is out April 18, though you can pre-purchase it today.
I admit I have yet to play any game published by Double Fine (though I do own a couple). But I’ve played many from Bandai Namco, and that’s relevant since this next game is by both. RAD is a top down adventure game where your primary power is the skill to mutate into horrid beasts to fight other horrid beasts. Sounds like my sort of game, so perhaps this will be the first Double Fine title I end up playing. RAD is out later this Summer.

If you had told me earlier today a game with a mix of post apocalyptic mayhem and pinball was gonna intrigue me, I would have called you a filthy liar. Well, now I know better, as Creature in the Well seems to mix both effortlessly. It features 8 dungeons, top down action adventure, pinball ricochet mechanics and lots of crazy. A giant creature has trapped your town in a sandstorm, so you have to slay it with over 15 weapons, each with different quirks. This fascinating looking title is out later this Summer.
I’m super excited that they announced that Bloodroots is out this Summer. Not only was this game a blast at PAX West, but it’s really a one of a kind action game. Everything in the environment is your weapon, which is good since one hit and you’re a gonner. Play as anti-hero Mr. Wolf on his mysterious quest for revenge. Can’t wait til I get my hands on this.
Pine gave me all sorts of Redwall vibes. This open world, 3rd person action adventure game adapts to your choices and features lots of strange creatures. Explore miles of terrain and engage with 5 factions of anthropomorphic animal men, including Moose and Gator. Scavenge, barter, harvest and craft this August.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Vlambeer got a lot of love, showing off 2 ports and one entirely new title. Super Crate Box is one of the ports out today. It features fast paced, multiplayer matches, which are exclusive to this version. Nuclear Throne is also out today, offering post apocalyptic fun solo or with a buddy. Lastly, the new title is Vlambeer Arcade, which features a growing catalog of bite sized games, including Ultra Bugs first. Think Space Invaders, except you use enemy DNA to customize your ship. Vlambeer Arcade is out later this year.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
If you like 2D fun in the ocean, you’ll love Swimsanity! It features 1-4 player bouts with humans or bots. This multiplayer underwater shooter has more than 150 challenges, 8 game modes and 5 worlds. Choose classic or motion control and enjoy matchmaking and in-game voice chat. Out later this Summer.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
When I think indie on Switch, I always think of Inti Creates. Today they announced the sequel to the wonderful Blaster Master Zero, Blaster Master Zero II. It features the Gaia-Sophia tank, a new blast counter mechanic, travelling across the galaxy to different planets and planetoids, new items and even a broad new cast of characters. Best of all, Blaster Master Zero II is out RIGHT NOW. I’ll wait while you go buy it.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The strangest reveal today was Stranger Things 3: The Game. Not a lot of details were announced for this isometric adventure game, other than local co-op, puzzle solving, and 12 playable characters. What I can say definitively is it releases July 4th which is also the same day that the 3rd season hits Netflix. Count me excited.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
They saved the best for almost last. At first I thought it was just talking about new content for Crypt of the Necrodancer, but surprise! It’s actually a brand new game in that universe called Cadence of Hyrule. Team up with Link and Zelda and fight off the hordes of Gannon and friends. This wonderfully exuberant looking game (which I’m sure will be a console exclusive) is out Spring 2019.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The last thing to cover today is that there will be a sale for other indies already on Switch later today. Whew, talk about a ton of new reasons to be excited. Thanks for joining oprainfall for your coverage and stay tuned for more info about these games in the near future!
Nintendo’s Indie Direct Recap, Including Cuphead and Cadence of Hyrule As both oprainfall's resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct.

A warrior of light in a strange world
(A ffxiv x botw/age of calamity fic)
(After saying goodbye to Ryne and Gaia after there daily meet up in the Crystarium, Casim, a warrior of light, decided to leave through the portal at the crystal tower.)
Casim: *sigh* it seems everything has been running smoothly since the scions and extrach returned home to the first.
(As Casim walked through the portal he felt a sharp pain in his chest and began to black out)
(Meanwhile in The middle of Hyrule fields. The Hyrulian, Zoras, Ritos, Gerudos, and Gorons forces were making there retreat from Ganon’s monsters.)
(Leading the evacuation was was Link and Zelda. Following behind were Mipha, Sidon, Yunobo, Impa, Daruk, Riju, and Urbosa. Teba and Revali were scouting in the air)
Teba: Damnit all! Even with our strength combined it still not enough against these things.
Revali: *hmph* you think that Hylian with that little darkness sealing sword wou
(At that exact moment I beam of light can be seen throughout all of Hyrule. The army and the champions stopped and looked to towards the sky to see where the light was coming from)
Zelda: What….what is that?
(The light can be seen shining towards the Hebra mountains. After a good long minute Impa began to speak)
Impa: ……..Your highness…..what are your orders?
(The champions all looked towards Zelda)
Zelda:…………….Have our forces return to there homes. Ganon’s forces may try to invade there lands again so they need all the protection they need before we can make a counter strike.
Zelda: Impa bring any soldiers wounded to the great plateau. There we will Rendezvous. Bring Robbie and Purah and try to find out a strategy to have our armies counter Ganon’s Forces.
Impa: It shall be done princess
(As Impa heads off to spread the word to the army Zelda turned her attention to the Champions)
Zelda:……..You all saw it too didn’t you?
Urbosa: it was kinda hard not to see it Little bird
Sidon: well what shall we do about it then?
Zelda:……The rest of us should investigate what was with that light…I ….I do not know why but I have a feeling…..this wasn’t the work of the goddess. Or my powers.
Teba: By the looks of it. It would seem the light was shining near the Hebra mountains
Daruk: Then that where we’re heading. Let’s go everyone
Link: *nods*
Urbosa: we should bring a couple of soldiers with us. We don’t know if this could be a good sign….or another issue on our hands.
(Near the Hebra mountains Casim was walking up groaning and shaking his head)
Casim: Mother of Shiva what happened
(Casim checks his surroundings)
Casim: by the looks of it It would seem I am near Coerthas ………….but for some strange reason it doesn’t feel like I’m in Coerthas……or Eorzea for that matter. *sighs* just perfect.
(While getting up Casim looked around again and noticed a somewhat looking stable)
Casim: well I’ll be this is either just lazy writing or dumb luck
(He laughs as he walks towards the stable. But in the distance….a Fire Lynel with a horde group of fire bokoblins/Moblins we’re also walking towards the stables.)
((Part 2 Casim is going to get his first welcome to Hyrule))

Time Stands Still
Part 3…. I don’t think I this the last part. Well, for the whole thing. This might be it for Time Stands Still, but meh. @eradition come lookie!
———-
One week passed as if it were nothing and it was soon time for Kari and Urbosa to head to Hyrule Field. Urbosa had a bad feeling about the situation but let it be. She knew that the young Sheikah girl was strong in different ways and was proud of that. However, the child was also reckless and wild and that is what worried Urbosa.
“I’ll be fine. You and everyone else are here. I’ll call if I need your help. I promise.” Kari assured Urbosa with a smile as they reached Hyrule Field.
Urbosa frowned. “Just… Don’t be to reckless. Please?” Kari nodded in reply. The two stopped a good distance away. Far enough that Core could not see Urbosa. “The other Champions should be nearby, within ear shot. Be careful.” Kari nodded and hugged Urbosa, who tightly embraced the child for not long enough. Kari backed away and smiled at Urbosa then ran off towards the battle grounds.
The young girl was soon greeted by the boy once she was seen by him. “Hello again, Kari.”
Kari huffed. “Core.” She growled, taking a stance. Core smirked darkly then rushed at the girl with a thin trail of darkness following him. Kari gulped and jumped over Core only to knee his back. The boy groaned in pain and Kari huffed. She jumped off of the older boy and landed on her feet. She held out her hands, palms up and her arms and fingers relaxed. The child sighed. “Gaia spear.” She mumbled. Large spikes shot up, piercing Core’s shoulders.
Core did not move. He did not scream or show any sign that he was injured. Instead a shadow coiled around the stalagmites and snapped them so he could stand up. Blood dripped from his wounds.
“Heh, predictable as always.” He snarked, voice oozing with darkness. Core then went to attack Kari again but she blocked and countered by kicking him hard in the stomach, making her leg as hard as metal to send him flying. But his body stayed in place. Core coughed up blood and Kari jumped back, panting from using so much energy. “Ah, you’re getting tired. Good.” Core laughed. “How would you like to die?”
“I’d rather not!” Kari snapped, gathering up a bit of energy and running towards the boy swiftly. She made her scarf ends into blades and began attacking him without mercy. Core blocked with his shadows. A grin ever present on his face. Kari began losing momentum after a while and she began to back off. Core laughed.
“Still need to work on that. You get tired too easily.” He taunted then rushed at the girl once again, poised to strike through her chest with a spear of darkness. Kari gasped and jumped to the right, getting hit in the side by the spear. Core huffed, annoyed that she was still fighting.
Kari shakily stood to her feet and gulped. The girl opened her mouth to call the champions for help, but Core swiftly covered her mouth with shadows. The girl let out a surprised, muffled, gasp. She narrowed her eyes at Core, a fire burning in them. A fire of what was uncertain. Core was taken back by this and sighed.
“Not gonna give up I see.” He held out has hand, allowing the shadows to form a giant axe. His symbols began to glow and the same glow surrounded Kari. “Very well.” He huffed and raised the child up only to slam her down. He did this again, and again, over, and over, until Kari was bloody and bruised all over her face. Core then flung the girl into a tree and ran at her, a tight grip on his axe. Core prepared to swing his axe at the child, aiming to cut off her head.
But Kari had other plans. She managed to rip off the shadows around her mouth like a band aid and exhaled while shakily standing to her feet, blood dripping from her wounds. A silver glow surrounded her whole body. The young girl held out her hands, palms forward with a smirk and she gulped, mumbling something under her breath, four silver rings around her pupils which were now slits as she looked at Core. Kari chuckled and  yelled out as loud as she could for all to hear. “TIME: STAND STILL!” A large, translucent, icy blue barrier surrounded the two as Core was about to strike. They both froze in place.
Urbosa jolted, hearing the child’s voice. She immediately ran to the battle spot, weapon in hand and ready to fight. When the champion got close enough she widened her eyes and picked up the pace. “No, no, no, no.” Urbosa gulped, running faster only to skid to a stop in front of the two frozen in time. Urbose gulped, tightening her grip on her weapon and shield, fists trembling and jaw clenched. The other champions and the princess were soon in the area. They all widened their eyes sadly.
“Kari… Is she?” Zelda gulped sadly, not finishing her sentence.
Link shook his head. “… She’s just frozen.” He replied in a low tone.
Revali crossed his wings, looking a way with a gulp. Daruk’s lip was quivering. “Tiny…” He mumbled sadly. He constantly called the young girl by the nickname, much like how he always called Link “little guy.” Kari never liked the nickname because she was self conscious about her oddly short stature.
Mipha frowned and approached Urbosa. “Urbosa. It’ll be okay. She’s not dead.” The zora tried to comfort the Gerudo champion.
Urbosa nodded and wiped the tears that were welling up in her eyes and relaxed a bit. “I’m sure she has a plan.” Urbosa stated sadly. “But it still hurts seeing her like this. It reminds me of when we first met.” She chuckled lightly at the memory. It was a precious memory to the champion.
Forgive me.

I always enjoy seeing your artworks on my dash. I just love your AU ideas like how do you come up with them man, they're awesome
Eyyy, thank you! There’s a lot of little one-off AUs like KH/ToZ, ToZ/ToV, etc, but as for the big ones…  Honestly half the time the AUs or crossovers happen because of a one-off suggestion or a dumb joke.
For anyone who is curious or is wondering what the AUs are, I’ll put the big ones under a cut here, with links to my journal tag for each and brief explanations of how they came to be!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And suddenly i was thinking Swordians -> Seraphim and…
The Zestiria fusion AU happened. Easily counts as the first big AU idea I ever publically developed to such a point for the Tales series. (At the end of the post, there are two special ones I’ll explain that you may not have even seen)
Tumblr media
The OnS vampire AU was a result of going “ooooh, another series with sentient weapons that used to be people” (though it’s more complicated than that on both counts) and, well…
Tumblr media
*shrug*
The space AU, as i’d mentioned in the oldest posts for it, was inspired by an actual dream I had.
That dream only included Dymlos and Chal, though:
Tumblr media
Friendly reminder that Destiny Star Dymlos is, in fact, a sentient ship:
Tumblr media
Now often times some of these are just me saying “I really want to put ___ and ___ in a room together,” but the Abyss AUs were maybe a bit more deliberate
Malkuth Remix, I honestly don’t know what got me thinking about the idea.  It’s very specific, as a diverging timeline where Luke’s origin is revealed immediately and Jade Curtiss is called in, and he ends up adopting Luke. It just kinda happened. I think after rewriting Solace, I just needed more of Jade being forced into the role of mentor figure.  Yes, mr. “I hate teaching.”
Tumblr media
The Winter Alchemist AU, on the other hand, was almost certainly a result of a humorous explanation given for Jade Curtiss in someone else’s post, which led me to seriously contemplating Jade Curtiss recreated in the context of FMA…
Tumblr media
Honestly, unlike Malkuth Remix which takes a step back and looks at everybody, I’m not even gonna try to lie to myself about this one: it very much focuses on Jade and people close to Jade, though that is not to say that other characters are being neglected. i have solid ideas for them, too, but anytime I contemplate doing a post to explain them, or do illustrations, Jade hijacks my creativity and monopolizes it.
He’s probably gonna make a cameo as a vampire in Tales of After the End at this rate.
I mean, Flynn and Yuri already kinda have half-planned cameos for that one, too, so he’s not even the first.

Hmmmm.  From a fair few years ago, then, there’s two other AU/crossover things which are more… direct crossovers:
Tumblr media
Gunsmoke in Gaia was crossposted to tumblr, but it’s easier to just read it via dA. (I am never drawing Cerberus again so help me)
The last was not public, but it was a Xillia 2/Zelda crossover in several stages-
Ludger thrust into the Hyrule of Twilight Princess, but then other things later on involving Alvin ending up drawing the Four Sword (and Hyrule running on Narnia Time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it was like.  Also some hybrid of RP and collab and ended up kinda shippy.
For the record, the crack ship i never would have guessed I’d dig:

*shrug*
SO  MANY CROSSOVERS, SO LITTLE TIME. :D I’m delighted that you’ve enjoyed them!

The 1st universe of System/Saber, that Saber jumps in in her multi-universal journey, where she appears 99 years after Hyrule got destroyed by Calamity Ganon, with Zelda holding him back in Hyrule Castle. But, it is 1 year before Link wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection, where Saber first appears in from an dimensional rift, and somehow, the temple activates upon her landing, without Link waking up. The Sheikah slate also has locked memories inside, which are of Link's, and upon touching it, Saber gets those locked memories in her head. Now, Saber has the task of saving Hyrule from Ganon's clutches, turn the Four Divine Beasts back to the side of the people, learn what Hyrule is, unlock the memories in the Sheikah Slate, face the Yiga clan, free the spirits of the Champions of the Divine Beasts, survive day by day, get various treasures & secrets, collect supplies, like food to cook and arrows, which means actually shooting arrows from an bow in centuries, get various attire sets, ultimately defeat Calamity Ganon, who has several Holy Grail pieces embedded in his body and his other 'pieces', and melt the grail pieces in an forge. Saber, aka, King Artoria Pendragon of the kingdom of England, is now in the wild, feeling the breath of both Gaia, the earth, Pontus, the water, the fire of Promethus, and Ouranos, the sky... That's just one part of her multi-versal journey though. ---

Prologue: Alone In A Basement (An Origins Story)
In October 1994, somewhere in a small suburb of Detroit, I was playing by myself in my Ghostbusters tent in the drafty unfinished basement of my parents’ house. All of the lights were off, with the exception being the ceiling light near the stairs heading up to the main floor. It was almost Halloween, and my curiosity was unquenchable.
I had inside the tent with me a single battery powered cassette player and a tape that I had smuggled from my parents without raising suspicion. Being young and foolish, my inquiring mind drove me to ask but one innocent little question:
“What else is there?”
With the help of the internet, I tracked down the memory of a tent that had almost been consumed by time. What is shown below closely depicts the visual atmosphere of this personal memoire I wish to share. This I remember vividly.
Encounter With The Tape
I had managed to load my cassette player with the blood red Halloween tape my Mom used for luring brave trick or treaters to our doorsteps. This particular tape included all sorts of haunted sounds, noises and things within the realm of the supernatural. Ghosts shrieking. People screaming. Chains dragging on cement. Zombies moaning. It was truly horrifying for a seven year old boy; my brain at that age often blurred the lines between fantasy and reality. I dared myself to listen as long as my bravery lasted, which was no longer than five minutes. Spooked by my imagination recreating all of the surreal scenes around me, I ran upstairs as fast as possible, never stopping to look behind me at what was following and chasing me…
Leaving that tape to continue to play on, into the empty darkness of bare, cold concrete and musty air…
A Tale From A Dark Place, Carried
Undoubtably, this was one of the scariest experiences of my entire life. I distinctly remember the feeling of being chased by the void and my heart racing at insane speeds. The influence of that vivid moment in my early childhood left a permanent scar on my subconscious mind. Looking back, I can say that it planted an endless curiosity of the unknown — and an eagerness to come to terms with it.
“No End Darkness” — my latest mix released for ELECTROWEEN 2017 — is the most recent and honest attempt I’ve made at revisiting that frigid, dreadful basement and remembering what it was like…
Sensing the coldness of the air…
Grasping the presence of absence….
Witnessing the canvas of the void…..
Feeling hopelessly vulnerable and alone.
Twenty three years later, that tape still plays its haunted cacophony into the atmoshere within the depths of my soul.
Reconciliation
This is my personal encounter that I’ve chosen to share with the world, and by doing so, have come to confront my fears and the wholeness of life once again.
Knowing the darkness is a personal experience we must all wrestle with in some aspect of our mortal existence. However, it is through the honesty of our shared vulnerability that we discover the most promising truth of human existence:
That each of us is not alone.
“No End Darkness” Mix Liner Notes
From Scott: These are the sounds of a past golden age, paired with the technology of the present. Some of these tracks have echoed in my mind for the past 20 years and never left me. They are the video games and stories I grew up with, forever entwined in the fibers of the visionary synthwave works and gaming titles of today. This is the present in full reconciliation with the past. Everything is relevant, and nothing is forgotten.
These artists and their counterparts communicate the importance of narrative, of colossal struggle and the great lengths protagonists go to fulfill their missions. They tell of creative diligence, uninhibited imagination, and a reconnection to the core essence of humanity; that is, the capacity to endure life’s most difficult trials in dark times.
Key influences for this mix include Castlevania (The new Netflix Original series released in July, created by American film producer Adi Shankar), Stranger Things Season 1 (in anticipation of Season 2 releasing October 27th!), Game of Thrones (HBO’s masterpiece, particularly season 7 here), and all of the timeless 80s/90s NES masterpieces (in particular: Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda, and Mega Man series). While I know these creations are not for everyone, I could not hold them in higher regards nor offer more significant recommendations for those adventurous in spirit, mind, and heart.
I should note that No End Darkness is just as much of a political statement as it is a memoir. Perhaps some of the included pieces speak to your own experiences this year; maybe none of them will. It is crucial for me to note that my objective is not to seek agreement nor acceptance from its creation. This project came out of a need to express myself and challenge the forces dictating this very moment. Now that it has been released into the wild, it may very well speak for others too, but not intentionally.
This work is dedicated to my loving parents and brother; for introducing me to the darkness at an early age, and giving me the strength to learn from it and fight it, no matter the cost. Thanks for all of your support along the way. I love you guys.
“The Nightmare Begins” Mix Liner Notes
The Nightmare Begins came into being after one of the best gaming experiences I have had. Early this year The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released with the Nintendo Switch. Then the idea was fully formed with my viewing of American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare. From those inspirations came a steadier mix filled with atmosphere instead of the bombastic electro that came in years prior.
Zelda BoTW is a video game all about exploration. Within the land of Hyrule, there are no waypoints or map markers telling the player where to go. Every destination you must set on your own by climbing up a high area to see interesting points in the distance. Complete directionlessness is given to you, but the developers trusted they built an interesting enough world that you’d want to explore anyways. In addition, I decided to play with the pro-HUD on, which takes away the minimap and forces you to remember your surroundings and paths. Just getting lost in the world was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had in a video game. Combined with themes of loss and Zelda’s timeless charm this is a perfect combination for ELECTROWEEN.
Getting LOST was what I took away from this game. The point was to go for a jaunt in the woods and get sidetracked. Find something that sparked your interest? That something could turn out to be a cute Korok (a type of woodland spirit) or a dangerous Guardian that could down you in one hit. Whatever the consequences it was always compelling and fun. Link, the character you play as, wakes up at the beginning of the game to find his own nightmare come to fruition. As Link, you must go through this waking nightmare. I wanted to reflect this in my mix, but with a much darker and slower tone than previous years.
I first came across American Horror Story with my girlfriend, Jessica. She asked me to watch it with her, as it is one of her favorite shows, I was reluctant. Historically, I’ve not been a fan of extremely scary tv or cinema. For those not familiar, American Horror Story changes every season in what story is told and the way in which it is told. We started by watch season 5: Hotel. Other than the performance by Lady Gaga, I didn’t enjoy the show. It was watching this year, season 6: My Roanoke Nightmare that got me hooked. The first half of the season is done in the style of true stories, that is, the “real” people are recounting their horrible time at the Roanoke Manner while actors act out the scenes. The second half of the season is played out like a reality show. The entire season is thrilling, tense, and extremely graphic. The many times I wanted to cover my eyes in horror, I also wanted to dive back into the show night after night.
Yes, a theme of My Roanoke Nightmare was getting lost in the woods. Unlike Zelda, this usually played out poorly for the heroes. Both Zelda and American Horror Story were my two and only influences for this mix. Usually, I have several others, but these two pieces of media were masters of their respective areas, it only felt right to draw from them.
Inside The Nightmare Begins: Different From Years Past
The Nightmare Begins is much slower than previous ELECTROWEEN mixes. It was very difficult for me to find songs that fit into what I wanted at the beginning. I started with a list of about twenty songs I thought could work, knowing that many had to be manipulated in ways I wasn’t quite comfortable with yet. I ended up throwing about half of my original track list out and completely replacing those selections.
The first song I knew I wanted in the mix was Hot Lights by Lany. This song set the tone for what I wanted the mix to be. A plodding medley focused on the somber mood, yet something you could dance to. My usual sources of Bandcamp and Beatport were quite useless at the beginning of my search. Fortunately this year I was exposed to quite a bit of Lana Del Rey, thanks to Jessica. Three of Lana’s songs are in The Nightmare Begins since she captures such a dreamy darkness with her voice. It was a perfect match!
Most, if not all, of the song selections were slowed down between 10 to 40 bpm — even Lana Del Rey’s songs were slowed down. Two songs, Somebody Else and Starboy were fast upbeat club remixes. Both of the song tempos were reduced heavily to give the exact feeling I wanted. Personally, I thought the slowed down versions sounded amazing. Check out the originals below:
I discovered it was difficult to pick out songs because I had to listen to the songs as if they were already slowed down. I had to see if the music would sound good together in a much slower tempo. Fortunately, it worked out for the best and now you can enjoy The Nightmare Begins.
Art and Music: The Voices of The Times
One takeaway we hope our work conveys is the reminder that no art form exists within a vacuum. Every personal creation is subject to the circumstances of the time and age from which it is crafted. In this way, these mixes give voice to an era ravaged by the evil-doing of cowardly men and women, the few seeking to fulfill personal agendas at the expense of the many. Every day has felt darker since their arrival, and the nights longer…
Right now, this Halloween season, we ask Karma to return the light to these lands again soon and conquer the darkness in which we find ourselves living. The great balance will be restored. In the meantime, we suffer through the long night together. Not just as a people, or a nation, but more so as a species that has survived hundreds of thousands of years of pain, grievances and tragedies alike.
As we continue to endure the darkness and nightmares before us and within ourselves, let us never forget the pendulum swings both ways.
Yours,
SW (VII) and MK (Loveless)

(TCS) I saw this really cute dress at a local department store and drew my girl Zelda Gaia in it. It looked like she was on a date so I changed her initially serene expression to that of a bashful one.
I don't think she'd wear this in canon simply because it's too modern of a style haha, but!! She rocks these types of looks so well, Idk what it is about her simplicity that works for her :')
