Monumental Bubbles Pop Up in Public Spaces in Atelier Sisu’s Inflatable Installations Whether illuminated by the sun or spotlights, the undulating layers of Atelier Sisu’s playful installations are a presence in public spaces. The Sydney-based studio, which is a collaboration between artists Renzo B. Larriviere and Zara Pasfield, celebrates community interaction and joy in their vibrant, inflatable designs. A buttress between art and architecture, their practice focuses on the interaction between art and the surrounding environment. “Our aim is not simply to create something beautiful or a temporary sculpture but to re-interpret our public spaces through architectural choices,” the studio says in a statement. EVANESCENT is an artwork driven by the forces and natural occurrences within the changing world around us. The use of dichroic film creates the illusion of the bubble-like form. The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-coloured, refers to an optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. These properties give the dichroic film it unique aesthetic effects, mimicking those of the bubble.

Highlights from Vivid Sydney 2018
We didn’t manage to explore everything, but here are some of my favourites from the Botanic Gardens and Circular Quay area.
From top to bottom, left to right, I loved...
Lighting of the sails: Metamathemagical by Jonathan Zawada - hypnotic and beautiful
Light Houses by TAFE NSW Students
Parrot Party by Zara Pasfield - the parrots get louder the more people who sat with them
Harmony Valley - Rainbow Of Peace & Trees Of Friendship by Edison Chen - encouraging people to interact with strangers
Astral by Zara Pasfield and amigo + amigo (you can also see Ember by Snell Architects in the background of the shot)
Oasis by James Feng Design + MAGK Partners - very beautiful
Fragmented and also The Bloom, both by Mandylights
Focus by Lumiforms - it was a lot of fun to play this digital instrument by moving my hands through the air
1000 Cranes by Ambient & Co - dazzling
There was a lot more I enjoyed and I’m sad I didn’t get time to visit the other areas or get to any of the music events this year. Looking forward to the next one!

Vivid School program lights up young minds
High school students from across the state learned from the artistic talent behind Sydney’s iconic light festival.
More than 1,000 students and teachers from schools across the state got a behind-the-scenes insight last week as part of a new education program at Vivid Sydney.
Among the artists students spoke with was Bonnie Forsyth, who has contributed to a number of projections at Taronga Zoo and Sydney’s CBD over the past few years.
Vivid Sydney 2019 artists Zara Pasfield, Georgina Buchanan and Hurricane Bestman also joined students.
Discussions led by Vivid Light Walk curator Lucy Keeler focused on how students could access careers in light and technology sculpture, projection art and the importance of collaboration in art.
Many of the students who attended study visual art, technical studies or vocational education and training (VET) entertainment.
A panel titled, Delicate Pixel Work (Girls Putting the ‘A’ in STEAM), examined the gender ratio of artists creating light works for Vivid Sydney – at present only 16.5% of whom are female – and how students can lead the change.
Destination NSW CEO and executive producer – Vivid Sydney Sandra Chipchase said the response to the inaugural Vivid School was inspiring.
“Students were able to ask these artists about their career pathways, the challenges and opportunities and how their involvement with Vivid Sydney has been instrumental in their highly successful careers,” Ms Chipchase said.
The inaugural Vivid School involved groups from schools in Queensland, as well as across metropolitan and regional NSW.
Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the southern hemisphere. Now in its eleventh year, Vivid Sydney will transform the Harbour City into a colourful creative canvas until June 15.
