Back In The Mindanao Area
23 July 2019 Entry:
Another Mindanao work assignment, Dipolog City, Zamboanga Del Norte… It was very rainy, but at least this work assignment was a training workshop, not a fieldwork. We’re just in a hotel all the whole time we’re there.

Exploring Avian Diversity in Siocon's Mangrove Areas, Mindanao
Tumblr media
Abstract
With the rampant habitat destruction of wildlife in the Philippines, the avifauna is the most affected as endemism in the archipelago is so high. Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte potentially harbors several Mindanao threatened endemic species in its Siocon Resource Reserve, a patch of secondary mature lowland forest as well as in mangrove areas. Opportunistic sampling was employed using the point method to primarily document the avifauna, specifically in the mangrove areas of Barangay Manaol and Barangay A.L Micubo. A total of thirty-four (34) birds (avifauna) were identified and classified, where twenty-five of them were common to the two sites. These are Rhipidura nigritorquis, Cinnyris jugularis, Lalage nigra, Megalurus palustris, Passer montanus, Gerygone sulphurea, Artamus leucorynchus, Pycnonotus goiaver, Oriolus chinensis, Hirundo tahitica, Orthotomus castaneiceps, Aplonis panayensis, Lonchura atracapilla, Coryusv macrohynchos, Butorides striata, Egretta garzetta, Ardeola speciosa, Ardea alba, Ixobrychus sinensis, Pluvialis fulva, Himantopus himantopus, Sterna hirundo, Actilis hypoleucos, Anas luzonica, Dendrocygna arcuata, Geopelia striata, Spolopelia chinensis, Todiramphus chloris, Merops philippinus, Pandion haliaetus, Haliastur indus, Gallinula chloropus, Tachybaptus ruficolis, and Centropus viridis. Out of these, three species were endemic to the Philippines (O. castanneiceps, C. viridis, A. luzonica), the latter is also considered a threatened species. This baseline data on avifauna on mangrove forests is necessary for the framework of conservation policy in the area.
Tumblr media
Introduction
The Philippines is one of the countries in the world considered as a biodiversity hotspot (Jumawan et al., 2012) and it is home to many avifauna species, which includes endemic and non-endemic species (Birdlife International, 2020). Specifically, as an archipelagic country, it harbors to more than 600 species of avifauna, where almost 200 of them are endemic (Tanalgo et al., 2015). According to Haribon (2014), 80 species of Philippine birds are now threatened to extinction, 13 are critically endangered, and 54 species are vulnerable. In the Zamboanga Peninsula, there are an estimated 142 species of avifauna in three key conservation sites, namely: the Lituban-Quipit watershed, Lake Maragang-Mt. Timolan and Pasonanca National Park. Around 78 species were found in Zamboanga City, of which 30 are nearly threatened (Panguntalan et al., 2011).
Tumblr media
Mangrove ecosystems are one of the most biologically rich, diverse, and productive ecosystems in the world (Mahilac & Madjos, 2020), which provides a home to birds. They serve as some form of nursery for many species of invertebrates as well as birds, making them one of the ecologically essential ecosystems. Despite this crucial role, approximately one-third of the mangrove ecosystems worldwide have been lost over the past 50 years (Alongi, 2002). In the Philippines, a decline of mangroves was reported from half a million hectares in 1918 to only 120,000 hectares in 1994 (Primavera, 2000). This estimate is accordingly accounted for overharvesting for the conversion of mangroves to fishponds during the 1960s and 1970s, fuel or charcoal, agriculture, industry, and human settlements (Dieta & Dieta, 2015).
Tumblr media
With this rampant habitat destruction and high endemism of birds, the country now possesses a disproportionately large number of threatened species for its size (Jacosalem et al., 2013). Further, the Philippines ranks second in terms of the number of threatened endemic birds in the world (Mallari et al., 2001). Among the islands where several endemic birds are threatened is Mindanao (Paguntalan et al., 2011). Despite the presence of a restricted-range and endemic species in the Zamboanga Peninsula (formerly called Western Mindanao), very few studies have been conducted in the area where most of the available information on avifauna is derived from museum records (Dickinson et al., 1991, Lambert 1996, Collar et al., 1999, Kennedy et al., 2000, Brooks 2002) and trip reports of visiting birdwatchers.
Tumblr media
Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte, Mindanao potentially harbors several threatened endemic species in its Siocon Resource Reserve, a patch of secondary mature lowland forest as well as in mangrove areas (Paguntalan et al., 2011). Accordingly, there is a need to conduct more field research and surveys in the remaining forest patches of the Zamboanga Peninsula. As surveyed in the municipal office, the avifauna inventory is not yet in place. This study presents a list of bird species and information on the conservation status of the remaining forests and threatened birds in these areas.

LATE-BREAKING NEWS: Zamboangueño Drag Artist 'Pura Luka Vega' is arrested for multiple nationwide counts of Persona Non Grata and other specific criminalities in Arrest Warrant
Tumblr media
(Written by Mitch Williams & Sasha Elizabeth Waybright / Bailley Mass Communication news intern for OneNETnews and Freelance News Editor & Intern for WEAZEL News)
SANTA CRUZ, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- It all comes down to this after 3 straight months, a 33 y/o male Zamboangueño LGBT drag artist individual named Pura Luka Vega (who is real name as Amadeus Fernando Pagente) is arrested for multiple counts of 'Persona Non Grata' in selected cites; including Western, Central and Eastern Visayas (excluding Dumaguete City & Negros Oriental -- which are currently not listed yet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(CONTRIBUTED PHOTO COURTESY via FB and the X Network PHOTO / In the 1st image above, a piece of Subpoena letter with Pura Luka Vega, but was failed to come forward. And the 2nd bottom image from one X Network user, a long-posted image in status update was released.)
This was after failing to receive or partially reading a Subpoena letter, and even he did not come forward to attend himself a preliminary investigation of a criminal case or in court, as obtained exclusively to OneNETnews.
Tumblr media
By late Wednesday afternoon (October 4th, 2023 at exactly 4:10pm -- Manila local time), per the exclusive radio report of Super Radyo: Manila DZBB-AM 594khz with Manny Vargas… He was enlisted for an arrest warrant and was issued by honorable Czarina Encarnacion Samonte-Villanueva, presiding judge of the Manila-Regional Trial Court: Branch 36 (M-RTC), due to numerous multiple charges that Mr. Amadeus face in for a criminal punishment in the whole country.
Unfortunately, in a possible theory, drag artist is prohibited completely by the Philippine national law (regardless of illegal fashion, more reasons for homophobic, and those situations of LGBT like Mr. Amadeus himself), since our news team of OneNETnews cannot independently verify them. You may remember last Sunday night (July 9th, 2023) after a video surprisingly but brazenly went viral online on his own social media account during a new, unreleased gospel rock remixed song of ’Ama Namin’ (or the Lord's Player).
Tumblr media
Aside from these national charges, local government units (LGUs) in Western, Central and Eastern Visayas affecting the areas of Persona Non Grata are in Palawan; Toboso town in Negros Occidental; Mandaue City in Province of Cebu, Cebu City, Bohol and Dinagat Islands.
Tumblr media
But here in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental alone as according to Dumaguete City Councilor named Joe Kenneth Arbas during a local radio interview of DWFH-FM 97.7mhz's Radyo Bandera: Sweet FM Dumaguete… The LGU officials decided not to declare the aforementioned Persona Non Grata in the entire province of Negros Oriental including Dumaguete City for Mr. Amadeus and was silently approved by a disclosed local resolution at the Dumaguete City session hall, next beside at the end of City Central Elementary School (CCES) in Santa Catalina Street.
youtube
youtube
So as that, Mr. Amadeus (known as one drag artist 'Pura Luka Vega') was now arrested at his temporal residence via the Manuel Hizon Street, Brgy. 339, Santa Cruz, National Capital Region in Manila; after travelling and moving originally from Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte. He was charged with multiple violations of a nationwide Persona Non Grata in some cities & regions, in relation to Article #201: Sections 2b.2, 2b.3, 2b.5 & 3 or Revised Penal Code and the Republic Act #10175: Section 6 or The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, with a recommended bail behind bars of PHP72,000 (or roughly U$D1,270) at the Manila Police District (MPD) jail in Santa Cruz, the said NCR.
Tumblr media
By soliciting monetary donations to free Mr. Amadeus, everyone else could be committing a cheating offense by using expensive cold-hard cash, electronic wallets like GCash & Maya, and traditional or digital banks like Landbank and CIMB Bank, leaving completely refuses to pay all the damages in taxpayer's money or criminal funds, according to the MPD.
Tumblr media
Even one human right's lawyer named Raphael Lorenzo Aguiling Pangalangan cannot fully control his unlawful issue with its disturbingly scandalous biblical trend.
Now the drag artist completely under attack in the online world of social media, his journey of "The Lord's Prayer" in LGBT drag artist career ends here with a bigger damages for a simple retirement of fashion. The 'Fake Jesus in Northwest Mindanao' is calling it quits, despite still a shameful individual character.
EDITOR's NOTE (from Mitch Williams): As I slowly discovered on my own hearing, while I am writing for my news article during my intern job via our headquarters at Hinobi newscenter, this was to be turned out an Evangelion-based anime punk rock genre. I can tell you with this sketchy cover song and I really love it for this LIVE church music, but not on this delinquent Filipino guy, nor of my type. Wish we can release on a music streaming platforms, since this one is a SPICY HOT track. For real as usual, i'm just a gamer here right off the bat on my casting production of Glitch Techs. 17 out of 10 is the final score. I'll buy a song track for, you know… personal reasons.

Hello Piri 🕵🏾
I see that you have 82 provinces, that's a lot! How is the nature of your relations with them? 👀
The 18 Provinces are like my siblings, and their children are the 82 Regions, so that kind of makes me their uncle!
Tumblr media
They're a blast when it comes to family gatherings, though we'll need to prepare a ton of food in advance. Cebu often brings lechon, he cooks it himself. Batangas has her comforting creamy Lomi, while Albay would rather sprinkle sili (hot peppers) on all of her dishes— like Bicol Express
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also have 8 twins that, okay sue me but I forget which is which a lot of times. Like Ilocos Norte/Sur, Misamis Oriental/Occidental, Agusan Del Norte/Del Sur, etc. . . They look so alike so I have to say pasensya a lot. Remembering people is not really my forte hahaha
Then occasionally I would forget that Zamboanga Del Norte and Del Sur aren't triplets with Zamboanga Sibugay. Pagpasensyahan na po si Tito lol
Tumblr media
Though there's one that neither a Province or a Region— Manila.
He's really a rebellious spirit, but also kind of a rich pretty boy. So, it's like if you mixed in me and Mahárlika's personalities, you get Manila.
It's real awkward when they ask if Manila is our child tho, me and Lika are pretty much brothers :^

With the help of three citizen scientists, an unknown Cryptocoryne population was found in one of the streams of Zamboanga del Norte province, Philippines, in March 2023. After careful morphological studies and literature review, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and their collaborators confirmed the unknown species was distinctive and new to science. The new species was named Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis to refer to Zamboanga Peninsula where this species was discovered. The study was published in the Nordic Journal of Botany on Oct. 17. Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis is a perennial, amphibious, large herb. It is similar to Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia for very long leaves and a long spathe tube, but recognized by a narrowly ovate, about 2 cm broad, densely verrucose bright purple spathe limb with a distinct narrow collar.

Destination: Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines
Tumblr media
From July 2022 to August 2023, I worked as General Counsel for a local conglomerate. Apart from their office in the Metro, they also had operations in Zamboanga del Norte. The nature of my work necessitated visits to Zamboanga every two (2) months just to make sure that the legalities of the operations are in place.
Zamboanga del Norte is a a province in the Philippines located in the northern part of the Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao. Its culture is diverse and primarily influenced by the Spanish colonization. It is rich in history and natural beauty. I experienced so many great things there.
I ventured out at sea overnight in different boats and went back to shore in a yacht. While at sea, I experienced the dark of the night until the fishermen started hauling a huge catch of sardines (the entire process took about 45 minutes). I ate a simple feast of freshly caught fish prepared by the same fishermen. I slept in the best room of the boat and was awakened by my friends to see the playful dolphin swimming near us and showing us tricks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I swam the clear waters of Bolong Beach. I went to the Canelar barter and bought local goodies as well as goodies imported from Malaysia. I went to food parks and dined in good restaurants. I ate the famous knickerbocker, the ube cake from Purple Yam, and delicious crabs in Alavar sauce. I went to tourist places like Fort Pilar. Best of all, I cultivated friendships with some of the kindest, warmest people I know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't gone back since I left the conglomerate in August 2023. But to me, Zamboanga will always be my "adoptive probinsya."

From Zamboanga del Norte to Bukidnon to South Korea to Cebu to Iloilo and now in Cavite, I still have this Hang Ten cardigan that I got from an ukay-ukay stand in Dipolog. I literally did ukay this from a pile of clothes on a wooden platfrom. That was 11 years ago. Me and cardie are solid like that 😅.

BALITANG LOKAL: New Local Radio Station 'Radyo Sincero' launched in Dumaguete City [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- A brand-new local radio station hit the Negrosanon airwaves in late-August this year as 95.9 'Radyo Sincero' launched right here in the City of Gentle People, popularly known as Dumaguete. It is situated on the 2nd floor of an unknown building, across Sunbets Building in 'Brgy. Tinago, Baybay, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental', and on the right is next door to former FM radio translator of 105.7 DYSQ-FM's Radyo Bisdak: Siquijor, just only few meters before the highway of Rizal Boulevard.
News reaching that the Negrosanons is now all abuzz with excitement as it readies itself to go on the air, promising to bring out a fresh mix of news and music to this airwaves.
Speaking exclusively to OneNETnews, a male Assistant Station Controller was barely able to contain the excitement over the first day of Radyo Sincero. He revealed that 'Radyo Sincero' will broadcast the popular syndicated radio programme 'Sincerely, Ate Arlyn' of 'Herbz Med Pharma', to be heard across all regions in the Visayas and Mindanao.
The nameless Assistant Station Controller said Radyo Sincero operates the best music on free radio, besides informative and relevant reports to the Filipino people. The station will cover the latest local news in Dumaguete City and regional updates from Negros Oriental and plans to expand the coverage to Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor in the Central Visayas region.
The identity of the station manager of Radyo Sincero in Dumaguete City remains undisclosed at this time. In addition, whether or not the station is owned -- if it's affiliated or commercially independent remains undetermined. Speculations towards its provisional authority or possible disapproval by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of a regional radio franchise are reportedly under its official ambit while waiting for the clearance of Philippine president 'Ferdinand Romualdez (Bongbong) Marcos Jr.' [BBM].
Things have turned skeptical as yet, though, there has been no confirmation on the test broadcast or official launch date for Radyo Sincero in Dumaguete City would be held. But the latter's Facebook pages (a social media company of Meta Platforms Inc. [MPi]), have revealing all the frequencies of Radyo Sincero provincial stations in Mindanao and the Visayas, with their likes of 101.9 in Butuan, Agusan del Norte; 88.7 in General Santos, South Cotabato; 102.9 in Koronadal, South Cotabato; 100.7 in Kidapawan, Cotabato; 94.3 in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; and 93.1 in Zamboanga City. In the Visayas, frequencies include 106.1 in Canla-on, Negros Oriental (replacing 'Radyo Bisdak: Canla-on' under Bisdak Media Group), and now, 95.9 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Looking ahead, Radyo Sincero plans to tackle the hottest issues in their commentaries from the male radio anchor hosts in the coming weeks, while continuing to provide top-notch music throughout the day and night.
