Forty Days of Frankenstein, Day Thirty-Two: Here’s another example of the art/animation style known as the “Gross Up Close Up,” a la Basil Wolverton, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, and while we’re at it, Ren and Stimpy cartoons.  This is two frame grabs from an entertaining animated short called “Blenderstein” which was animator Zach Bellissimo’s thesis film at the School of Visual Arts back in 2011.  The Monster’s name is Oogle, and he’s been created by Dr. Frappe, a super-intelligent monkey scientist.  His brain is a blender (hence the title).  To tell anymore would be to spoil the fun.  If you can handle the art style, you should give it a watch.  It’s available on YouTube.

Halfway there!
Rawhide is possibly the best drawing I made so far this Inktober. Although I wish I had chosen a better ref for her belt, as I had three different options: Frankie, Juniper Lee and Buttercup (the latter was chosen mostly because she's also voiced by E.G. Daily). But besides that, she looks great in this. Still a shame that Long Gone Gulch hasn't been picked up again, though maybe it's a blessing in disguise so it still qualifies as “indie”.
Character belongs to Tara Billinger and Zach Bellissimo. (@longgonegulch)

Long Gone Gulch!
Just watched Long Gone Gulch! The animation in this pilot is INCREDIBLY expressive, just about every frame is a treat and joy to watch, with its snappy fluidity and flavorful effect! There’s a very powerful, snappy energy to the animation that helps to accentuate the mood, along with hilarious stills here or there; Like the hyper-detailed shots for Rawhide and Mako’s showdowns, especially the second one where it just. Glitches out completely into an assorted variety of mediums in the most chaotic fashion, it’s great and amazing!
The humor was excellent and top-notch, and the cuts and pacing really helped to sell the jokes! One joke I really liked was Mako ripping into the ‘portrait’ of him for his birthday, only to end on his wholehearted approval; And THEN have it be replaced by Rawhide’s face! Even the establishing opening is a clever and effective twist, with the tumbleweed revealed to be a creature; And I love the little character moments and gags, physical comedy here or there, etc.! Rawhide surprisingly touched my heart a bit, and I like how Snag alludes to his apathetic nature lowkey being a coping mechanism for all of the disapproval he gets.
I have to wonder what happened to Rawhide’s father? Well, who knows- We know for sure at least that Mako did NOT kill him, that was a wonderful gag and joke! BW’s an interesting character, she and Rawhide have some beef between one another- I suppose because of BW’s occasional, condescending attitude and nature, but... I do have to wonder if she means better and well? The end-credits show an image of Rawhide and BW just sort of chilling, so I doubt their relationship is/will always be adversarial. And speaking of other characters; Pinchley is a delight, and I just want to cite that one specific moment where he just... absorbs the Sheriff badges into his body and then spits them out! Wonderful, totally caught me off-guard, it’s an inexplicable quirk of animation that just adds to the chaotic energy and flavor of this pilot!
The voice-acting and dialogue was top-notch, and I love Mayor Rhubarb’s perpetually tired energy... It manages to come across as a VERY intense energy, despite the word ‘tired’ usually meaning the opposite; A sort of exhausted despair! Marigold was a hilarious, deadpan gag to deliver, such as when she abruptly cuts out Rhubarb’s breakdown midway through the episode to just flatly deliver what is pretty obvious to Rawhide and Snag. And speaking of Snag once more, I like how he doesn’t really care for the job at all, just for his comb; But he can tell how much it means to Rawhide, so he indulges into it and encourages her, it’s a heartwarming, almost sibling bond between the two!
Anyhow, the various character designs were wonderful and full of so much identity without feeling crowded, and I love the various background characters! The music is superb and I loved the repeated leitmotif when Rawhide visits her father’s grave... This pilot was just a general medley and collection of small, and sometimes VERY BIG, moments and quirks of animation here or there, bits where the animators were clearly showing off and unapologetically having fun! The humor, dialogue, pacing- Again, I REALLY enjoyed it, and I found the brief heartwarming moments here or there to be compelling! All in all this was an amazing pilot, and I would wholeheartedly recommend! I offer my congratulations to Tara Billinger and Zach Bellisimo for their wonderful work, and I wish them success on future endeavors, be it Long Gone Gulch or anything else!

This is what comes from playing too much Cuphead and waiting for the Long Gone Gulch pilot! A brilliant game, if not slightly soul-destroying in parts! (Dr. Kahl's robot I'm looking at you 😑)
Twas a very fun exercise :)
