Name: Zaaj Khang

Major: Radiography

Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.Tell us about yourself and your journey to CVTC.

I was born in Wisconsin Rapids and lived there until I was in elementary school. After that, my family moved to Hudson, Wisconsin, and then we came to Eau Claire. There is a total of seven people in my family, and I am the oldest of my five siblings. I chose to come to CVTC because it is close to home.

What made you choose your program? Did anyone or anything in particular inspire you?

Originally, I was planning to go into the IT network specialist program. I took some high school classes related to IT but wasn’t sure if I liked it, and I was very indecisive. I began talking with my uncle, who is a radiologic technologist, and he gave me some insight about his job. Essentially, my uncle and mom inspired me to pursue the radiography program.

What are your plans after school?

I would love to be a radiologic technologist in the Eau Claire area someday. I would love to give back to my mom and dad in the future—they have always supported me. My mom is going back to school for nursing, and I am very proud of her.

How did you choose CVTC? Who helped you be successful?

I chose CVTC with the help of a family friend. She told me about the College, and I felt that it would be a good fit for me. It’s a bonus that it’s close to home too. My siblings look up to me and hold me accountable. They drive me to succeed in school.

What do you enjoy most about your current classes?

I find school interesting. I think it’s important to learn anything you can as long as you can. It’s fun to learn different concepts.

What do you enjoy doing outside of class?

My church is my second home. I attend the Hmong Christian church and was the youth president there. We do egg roll fundraisers often, which is very fun.

-        I’ve made 25,000 egg rolls in one day with my church.

-        I like playing the drums and guitar for church.

-        I don’t watch a lot of TV shows, but I do watch different types of movies.

-        I have pet chickens and fish.

-        I like playing and watching football and basketball.

I have been seeing this Hmong music video from China slowly trending in the Hmong community. It’s a mix of old folk singing “lug txaj” and modern singing “zaaj nkauj”. It’s in the Mong Leng/Green dialect. It shouldn’t be hard for Hmong White dialect speakers to understand. I personally think it’s a good song to promote Hmong people from China. It’s a song about how beautiful his old village is. He sings we must not forget our villages. Look at the beautiful scenery. There are hemp plants where Hmong people are famous for making clothes out of them.

In China Hmong people are referred to as Miao. There are many subgroups of Miao people. Hmong is one of the subgroups. In China Hmong people are estimated population of about 2.7 million. Within the Hmong group there are also subgroups. These are the Mong Leng/Green dialect speakers. This is the dialect my family speaks. Most Hmong from China wear colourful embroidery pleated dresses with apron and sash belts “sev hab hlaab”. Also they wear round circular beaded hats. They are the same Hmong people that lives in Southeast Asia and western world. We wear silver jewelry necklaces “xauv”.
