Good morning, everyone--happy Friday! We made it through the week! I hope you've all made it through the week in one piece and are doing okay. It's been an up and down week for all a lot of us, I think, but we always make it through, right? :)
I actually wasn't planning to do deals today because I'm trying to get a final paper done (my last paper ever for my MA!), but I saw how many books were on sale and decided to try to whip it out really quickly--so here we are! Five Books I'd Love To Receive For My Birthday - 2019
Five Books I’d Love To Receive For My Birthday – 2019
Happy Birthday to me! April is my birthday month and my birthday actually falls on Easter Sunday this year. Like any other regular bookworm, the only thing I want for my birthday is BOOKS.I did this post last year in 2018 and enjoyed doing it so much I thought I’d have another go this year. Let’s be honest, there’s no chance of my wish-list ever getting any smaller – there’s just too many good…

April 12th, 2019 || READING WRAP-UP n° 4: books 15-19. . 🌻 Pure by Rose Cartwright. Memoir about the author suffering a type of OCD which involves experiencing sexual (and violent) intrusive thoughts. This was really good and difficult to read but I highly recommend it (8.5/10). The Channel 4 series inspired by the book is also very good. 🌻 The Idiot by Elif Batuman. Quite a surprising book. I enjoyed it even though I thought it wasn’t gonna be a book for me. I was wrong. It was a fascinating read although not a perfect one (7/10). 🌻 Remembered by Yvonne Battle-Felton. The thing I loved the most about this novel was the writing. So beautiful! But unfortunately, although a good read, I found myself losing interest at the middle and my reading experience suffered for it. TW for sexual assault (6/10). 🌻 How Long ‘til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin. A solid short story collection. As always I enjoyed some stories more than others but I find Jemisin’s writing extremely compelling (6.8/10). 🌻 The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. This was good but not as brilliant as I was expecting considering the hype around it. Trigger warnings for absolutely everything you can think of and then some. There are moments which are very difficult to read and hard to digest but at the same time I didn’t feel like it was too much... maybe because I was expecting it to be brutal. Not a perfect book (it does have some inconsistencies and I found Rin’s character quite annoying during the second half of the book due to her stupid decisions - she just kept changing her mind every other page) but a good start of a series nonetheless (7.5/10). . Have you finished any book lately? • • • #readingwrapup #recentreads #thepoppywar #remembered #womensprize #theidiot #howlongtilblackfuturemonth #pure #fantasybook #scifibooks #literaryfiction https://www.instagram.com/adayinbookland/p/BwKjq8VH7Rt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tnnvwpxcp5qf

Finished Curdle Creek (Yvonne Battle-Felton) and I'm really not sure how I feel about it.
On the one hand, those were impeccable gothic vibes, and the author's style really lent itself well to the environment it was trying to craft. I think hearing Osira's thoughts--seeing her so clearly struggle to shake her indoctrination but flip flop because it was all she'd ever known--was great. On the other hand...
I saw someone bitch on Goodreads about how there were a lot of little plot tangents that went nowhere. How the ending felt incomplete. The former I kinda get (only kinda...to me, the story was written in a way I think a person would speak about their life, and even the "side tangents" helped world build.) As to the latter, I think i get what the author was trying to do, I think the execution just fell flat to me.
Anyway, I'd probably check out this author again. I really like their style.
