September 11 - A day jam packed
September 11 is one of those days in which an odd amount of historically important things happen. Let's give a (very brief) run down of what happened during the AmRev!
In 1775, the future turncoat (but currently respected) Benedict Arnold left for Quebec from Massachusetts, where he would meet up with other detachments under the commander of General Montgomery.
In 1776, a peace conference was held on Staten Island, with Lord Admiral Richard Howe, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge in attendence. They convened after only three hours, with Howe unable to grant recognition of independence that the rebels sought.
In 1777, the Battle of Brandywine (Creek) took place, one of my personal favorite battles. Despite valiant effort, the Continental Army, under command of Washington, was outmaneuvered by William Howe. Brandywine was one of the largest individual battles of the war and lasted an outstanding eleven hours. Among numerous other anecdotes, the Marquis de Lafayette was shot through the thigh and continued to fight until he was pulled off the field.

Yves Edwards vs Josh Thomson - UFC 49
Another throwback. This time to 2004. Yves Edwards is arguably the top lightweight on the planet and one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. The UFC does not care and puts him on the curtain jerker prelim for UFC 49. We ended up with one of the best KOs in MMA history.
The UFC would then go on to dissolve the lightweight division after this event. Edwards goes on to do a brief stint PRIDE, competing in their 2005 tournament and losing in the opening round to Joachim Hansen. Josh Thomson also makes a pit stop in PRIDE before heading to Strikeforce where he eventually captures the lightweight title. The division does not return until UFC 58, two years later. There were two lightweight fights on the card, one featuring Yves Edwards against Mark Hominick.

“EDWARDSVILLE, April 25, 1825. DEAR SIR: — This will be handed to you by my friend and aid-de-camp, Col. William Schuyler Hamilton, whom I take pleasure in introducing to you as the son of your old and particular friend. Gen. Alexander Hamilton. As it is not known when you will arrive at St. Louis or what will be your intended route from thence, Col. Hamilton is posted there for the purpose of waiting on you as soon as you shall arrive and ascertaining from you and making known to me by what route you propose to return to the eastward and when and where it will be most agreeable for you to afford me the happiness of seeing you and welcoming you to Illinois. I am, with the greatest respect and esteem, your devoted friend, EDWARD COLES.
GENERAL LAFAYETTE. This Col. William Schuyler Hamilton is worth remembering, and is deserving of more than a passing tribute owing to more reasons than one. He was the son of the immortal Alexander Hamilton, and his real name was William Stephen Hamilton and not William Schuyler, as Governor Coles calls him. He lived in the State of Illinois during the administration of Governor Coles, was appointed by him his aid-de-camp, with the rank of colonel, and performed all his duties with great intelligence, dignity and decorum. He was born in New York, August 4, 1797, and was admitted to the West Point Academy in 1814 and resigned in 1817. He left his home in New York and settled at an early day in Sangamon county, Illinois. He was United States deputy surveyor of the publie lands, and in that capacity surveyed the township in which Springfield now stands. In 1824 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives from Sangamon county. In 1827 he removed to the “Fever River Lead Mines” and commenced mining for lead ore at a point soon known as “Hamilton's Diggings,” now Wiota, in LaFayette county, Wisconsin. Hon. Elihu Washburne, in referring to him, says: “I knew Colonel Hamilton well from 1841 to 1849, when he emigrated to California. He occupied a prominent position in southwestern Wisconsin and was a well known Whig politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives in the territorial legislature of Wisconsin in 1842-3. He died in Sacramento, California, October 9, 1850. For nineteen years neither stone nor slab marked the spot where reposed his ashes. When the careless grave-digger threw his shovelfuls of earth on his coffin, little could he have thought he was covering the remains of a son of Alexander Hamilton, in my judgment the greatest of all American statesmen. Colonel Hamilton was brave, generous, hospitable and humane, and unusually quick in perception and decided in action.”
