Movement Two: First Contact
(A/N: I'm not dead yet :3)
Content warning for mentions of suicide and suicide attempts. Also warning for Yusuke Kitagawa.

âThat friday being?â The policeman in front of me asked.
âApril 15th. It was my momâs birthday.â
âI see⌠Iâm sorry.â
âIâm not someone who needs an apology.â I clarified, shifting in my seat.Â
```
Right soâŚ
That morning was very typical for me, I called my mom, met up with my friends, got to class, did my work, but I got a bunch of texts from Yuna during second period. And donât get me wrong, I donât normally answer right away, but the teacher was out of the room so I thought it couldnât hurt to check.
âYuna 10.13 - call me
âYuna 10.13 - please
âYuna 10.13 - [y/n] can you call ee rn
âYuna 10.13 - i need to talk to u
âYuna 10.13 - lile really really badly can you lease call
[y/n] peered down at the oddly demanding texts, wondering what could possibly be so urgent that it had to take her from class. After a minute of debate, she slid out of her seat as quietly as possible and began to head to the door.Â
â[l/n], where are you going?â A boy in the front row questioned, looking up from his paper.
âIâm going to head to the nurse,â [y/n] whispered, coming up with the least offensive lie she could.Â
âShouldnât you wait until Mrs. Kinoshita gets back?â Asked another girl a couple of +seats away.
âItâs⌠itâs urgent,â She blurted out before turning her back to the two and walking to the door. âCan you guys tell her when she gets back?â She added, as not to arouse suspicion, and without waiting for a response, exited the room.
[y/n] rushed into the girls bathroom down the hall and pulled out her phone. She quickly dialed Yuna, who picked up within a couple of seconds.Â
âYuna? Whats going on?â [y/n] asked softly.
There was a lot of chatter and heavy breathing coming from the other side.
âYuna? Yuna are you okay?â She prodded further.
â[y/n] I just need you to stay on the line with me right now because Iâm really freaking out right now okay? I called the police and they said that they had already sent someone but that was like 5 minutes ago and they still arenât here. Arenât they supposed to respond as soon as possible? They have to get here within the next couple of minutes or else sheâs not going to make it.â Yunaâs already panicked voice seemed to speed up with every word spoken.Â
âHuh? Whatâs going on?â
âShiho,â Yuna paused for a few seconds, âShiho is over the railing of the roof and I think sheâs about to jump.â
I donât really like thinking about that call too much.Â
âYou said you already called the police?â [y/n] asked hesitantly.Â
âI did!â She cried out, exacerbated. âI called as soon as I noticed, and they said that someone else had notified them too, but theyâre not here yet! I said that! â
âYuna, please calm down. Itâs just hard to understand you right now; Itâs loud on your side.â
âI know, I know!â She cried out, âIâm trying to calm down, I really am, but how am I supposed to calm down when the police arenât getting here!â
âThey will get there, Yuna, itâs going to be okay.â [y/n] said, trying her best to stay rational.
âYou say that but it isnât looking like it! Iâm trying to get up there but thereâs just a bunch of useless fucks in my way! What the fuck else am I supposed to do?â
âYuna, getting so agitated isnât going to help-â
I know she said something else after that, but I couldnât hear her over all of the commotion coming from her side of the phone. There was a lot of screaming.Â
.
.
.Â
Iâm really lucky I wasnât thereâŚ
When I said I didnât need an apology, I meant it. I wasnât really close to Shiho, but she was still my friend. Iâm glad that guy is in jail. She was such a nice girl.
We had sleepovers together often. The four of us, plus her and some other girls on the Shujin volleyball team. She always made cookies; experimenting with new recipes and trying them out on us. One time she made these red velvet cookies that were filled with fudge in the middle and they were so good, but they were so rich that you couldnât eat more than one of them without feeling sick to your stomach. There were so many left over at the end that it was almost comical.
In the morning we both had to go to the station to get home from Yunaâs house, and I remember her asking me to help hand them out to the homeless people near the underground mall. I almost made a joke that it would do them more harm than good butâŚÂ
She was different than Momo or Yuna. You couldnât say that kind of thing to her, sheâd chew you out and you knew she was in the right so it hurt ten times worse.
.
.
.
I just had to hang up on Yuna after a bit. I donât think she cared. She had more important things to worry about.Â
```
âI went to the nurses office for real after that. I ended up puking and I called my mom to have her take me back to her house,â I managed to get out without my voice breaking.Â
âI see. And, you know that Suzui Shiho is not dead, yes?â the policeman reached down and took out a little bag from his briefcase underneath the his chair then opened it in such a way as to reveal its contents to me.Â
âWould you like a candy?â He asked.
âYeah⌠Thank you,â I said as searched for one that looked like it was [favorite flavor :3].Â
âAnd⌠I know she isnât dead, it just feels like even though she recovered, we still lost her. She moved away right after she got out of the hospital.â
âI see. Do you know where Miss Suzui moved to?â
âMomoko said she moved up to Toyama.â
âMhmm, and there is no possibility she was working with the Phantom Thieves?â
It took me a second to think of an answer that wasnât too rude, but such a dumb question practically deserved a condescending answer.Â
âI donât see how she would have, she was hospitalized up until the month she left.â
âThank you, just a confirmation.â The officer said, holding up his hand as if he were surrendering. âThere are more people Iâd like to ask about, but that can wait. If youâd please continue on with your recounting.â He gestured for me to go ahead as I pulled out a piece of taffy and pocketed it.Â
âOkayâŚâ
```
I didnât go to school that Saturday. I spent the time with my mom to make up for her ruined birthday, but it still felt kind of wrong to celebrate.Â
But the world kept on spinning and I didnât want to be swept up in the wake of everyone else moving on, so I continued on as normal.Â
.
.
.
[y/n] finished buttoning up her red collared shirt and brushed down the pleats of her skirt. A quick dab of concealer hid the bags under her eyes and she quickly pulled her hair back like she had always been requested to.
It was practically a crime she still had to go to work, but there was no one else to cover her shift on short notice.Â
It was boring to man an Aojiru stand. The customer base consisted of a majority of senior citizens, and thereâs a point when talking to old people all day becomes sad instead of endearing.Â
[Y/N] leaned over the counter as she propped her head up on her arms, awaiting the next 70-year-old to visit her. But before she could fully sink into herself, a soft meow rang through the underground mall where she worked.
As she jolted up straight, two boys who looked to be around her age caught her eye. They were staring at the handwritten âdaily specialâ board with suspicious eyes. Not completely out of the ordinary. What was, however, was the cat peeking out of the taller oneâs bag. Big blue eyes stared right back at [Y/N] as she took in its cute little face. It was hard to spot from far away, but its lithe tail had a little white patch on the very end, matching its white muzzle. Nothing else could have matched that much-needed pick-me-up.
âHey, do you really put bath water in those things?â The shorter one piped up. He had a slightly grown-out, bleached buzz cut and wore a familiar-looking band t-shirt riddled with holes. He looked like the kind of fake-gangster a little kid would come up with, but there he was, probably real. Upon a bit of recollection, [Y/N] recognized it as one of the ones Hanabi had shown to her. His face had a look of pure disgust etched on it, completely horrified by the concept of spa water Aojiru.Â
âItâs just the blend of aromatics,â [Y/N] replied, prying her eyes away from the little cat in the pairâs custody, âItâs completely safe to drink.â
âShit, thank god. That wouldâve been so nasty.â The boy sighed, putting his hand over his forehead.Â
âWhy the hell would you even say that itâs bath water then? Is it some sort of marketing scheme?â He grumbled.
âHow much do you charge?â The taller one asked softly.Â
âYouâre joking.â said the blonde as he turned to look his friend in the eye.
âFor the weekly special, it will be 5000 yen, but our basic menu drinks will be half that price.â [Y/N] explained, continuing her company-mandated sales pitch.Â
The blonde on the left rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest, clearly bored and itching to leave, but the one on the right stayed, fascinated by [Y/N]âs perfectly rehearsed speech.Â
The little cat in his bag meowed, making both of the boys look down at it.Â
âIâd like to try the weekly special then,â the tall one said as he walked closer to the stall.Â
âOf course!â [Y/N] tried her best to look alive. âIs there anything else I could get you for today?â
The boy looked back at his friend as if to ask him something, to which his friend promptly and vehemently shook his head.Â
âNo.â
âI see, with tax your total will be ÂĽ5400. And hereâs your rewards card! For every 10 full-priced drinks you buy, you will receive one drink of your choice at a discounted rate! Iâve already marked off your first drink.â
As if it could understand the exorbitant price, the cat in the bag squeaked.
It only took a few seconds for [Y/N] to put away his money into the register and pour his drink for him, but time seemed to slow in the presence of this guy.Â
She didnât want to end their conversation with just corporate talk. She was curious about him. Not in any intangible way, really, she just wanted to know why he was carrying his cat with him in a school bag on a Sunday afternoon.Â
After a millisecondâs worth of deliberation, she spoke up.Â
âYour cat is really cute. What is its name?â [Y/N] asked.
âAwe man, I told you people could see you, stay hidden deeper in the bag! Squish down in there!â The blonde boy huffed as he approached the cat with his hand outstretched as if to maneuver him into hiding better. The cat yowled as it attempted to keep the boy from touching it.
It took a bit for the black-haired one to respond, but eventually a âHis name is Morganaâ left his mouth.Â
âSo⌠do you just keep him in your bag for fun?â [Y/N] questioned.
âWeâd have a lot more fun without him around,â the blonde one grumbled as [Y/N] handed the cup of Aojiru to his friend.Â
The kitty yowled at that comment as if it could understand the boy and popped his head out of the bag to look up at him.
âDidnât I say to stay hidden?!â The blonde began to reach over to maneuver the cat once more but it swatted at his hand frantically.
âOh. Well⌠Please enjoy your drink! And be sure to visit weekly to try our new specials!â [Y/N] said cheerfully, abandoning the failing cat-talk.
The dark-haired one nodded at her, took a good look at the concoction he just paid for, and chugged the entire thing in less than 30 seconds.
.
.
.
âHe really just⌠downed it? Did he puke right after or something? I donât get it, those things are huge.â Hanabi muttered, confused.Â
âTo pay such a price and yet not savor the complexity of the drinkâŚâ [Y/N]âs friend mused, bringing his hand up to his chin as if it would help him think better.Â
âI donât know, he and the other guy left right after that. I wanted to see if I could pet their cat, to be honest. But thatâs a bit weird, isn't it? To have a stranger ask to pet your cat.â [Y/N] said, picking up a bite of her lunch.
âHe must have had a huge throat.â Hanabi nodded her head, finally coming up with a solution that seemed plausible in her mind. âThat way he didnât have to swallow, he just let it slide down or something.â
âWhat.â [Y/N] put her food right back down.Â
âYeah, like look,â Hanabi moved a little closer to their third companion, âYusuke has a sort of thin neck, so he probably wouldnât be able to drink it all that quickly, but if that guy you were talking about had a really thick neck, and a really large esophagus, then he would be able to do it no problem.âÂ
âDo you truly believe my neck is thin?â Yusuke asked.Â
âI think a lot of you is thin,â Hanabi replied, half-heartedly shrugging.Â
âI donât think he had a very thick neck.â [Y/N] said.Â
âWell if he comes by again, ask him to measure it.â Hanabi nodded once more, as if trying to agree for her friend. âOh wait! There was this one french guy whose stomach was so big that you could see the inside of it from his mouth if you looked from the right angle! He probably has something like that!â
ââŚew.â [Y/N] grimaced.
âOh thatâs not even the worst part. He would eat garbage and bite chunks out of livestock. He might have even eaten a baby.â Hanabi leaned over the desk she was sitting in to look [Y/N] in the eyes.Â
âHow fascinating. To live during the same time as such a man would have been truly enlightening. To find the limits of the human bodyâŚâ Yusuke murmured to himself.
âWhy do you even know this kind of stuff,â [Y/N] frowned and scooted herself away from Hanabi.Â
âIf I canât find Rinzaki or Popteen in stores then I pick up one of the educational magazines,â Hanabi shrugged. âOh yeah! Yusuke are you doing anything this weekend? I wanted to go over some of the old English lessons and-âÂ
.
.
.
.
âThe rest of April went by pretty smoothly all things considered. After our final performance on the 30th we had to re-audition for our spots in the orchestra, and I moved from 4th chair first violin to 1st chair second violin,â I recounted.
âI see, thatâs impressive Miss [L/N], but Iâm afraid we are not here to discuss your accomplishments,â the man in front of me said as politely as he could, which wasnât very, âOn April 2nd your friendâs teacher, Mr Suguru Kamoshida, confessed to being a sexual predator after a threat from the Phantom Thieves. I am inclined to believe that you know someone who was involved with the crime.â
Tatsuya Nakadai in The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer (Masaki Kobayashi, 1961)
Cast: Tatsuya Nakadai, Michiyo Aratama, Tamao Nakamura, Yusuke Kawazu, Chishu Ryu, Taketoshi Naito, Hideko Takamine, Kyoko Kishida, Ed Keene, Ronald Self. Screenplay: Zenzo Matsuyama, Koichi Inagaki, Masaki Kobayashi, based on a novel by Junpei Gomikawa. Cinematography: Yoshio Miyajima. Art direction: Kazue Hirataka. Film editing: Keiichi Uraoka. Music: Chuji Kinoshita.
Homer's Odysseus made it home to Ithaka and Penelope, but Masaki Kobayashi's Odysseus, Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai), doesn't make it home to his Penelope, Michiko (Michiyo Aratama), and he's not certain that his Ithaka in southern Manchuria still exists. Kaji struggles toward her against all odds, but dies in a snowstorm, without even a moment of transcendence or a heavenly choir on the soundtrack to ennoble his death. It's a downer ending to a nine-hour epic, but if it feels right it's thanks to the enormous conviction of Nakadai as the stubborn idealist Kaji. The Human Condition is an immersive experience rather than a dramatic one: Drama would demand catharsis, and there is really none to be had from the film. The human condition depicted in the film is Hobbesian: solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short -- though the length of the film works against the last adjective. It is a statement film: War is a stupid way for people to behave to one another. And as such it never quite transcends its message-making, leaving the film somewhere short of greatness. Still, it has to be seen by anyone who seeks to understand Japan in the twentieth century and after, and by anyone who wants to know the limits of film as an art form.
Chieko Higashiyama and Chishu Ryu in Spring Dreams (Keisuke Kinoshita, 1960) Cast: Mariko Okada, Yoshiko Kuga, Eitaro Ozawa, Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama, Michiko Araki, Yatsuko Tan'ami, Yusuke Kawazu, Shuji Sano, Shinlji Tanaka, Miki Mori, Mie Fuji, Meiko Nakamura, Yukio Toake. Screenplay: Keisuke Kinoshita. Cinematography: Hiroshi Kusuda. Art direction: Chiyoo Umeda.Film editing: Yoshi Sugihara. Music: Chuji Kinoshita. Keisuke Kinoshita's attempt at something like screwball comedy, Spring Dreams, has been likened to Jean Renoir's Boudu Saved From Drowning (1932) because of its premise: a member of the lower classes throws a self-centered middle class household into chaos. In this case, it's a sweet potato vendor who has a stroke in the living room of the Okudaira household and is forced to recuperate there. Because most of the action takes place in a few rooms in the Okudaira house, I'm more reminded of the stage comedies of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, The Man Who Came to Dinner and You Can't Take It With You, especially since Kinoshita films with long "theatrical" takes. The head of the household, Shobei Okudaira (Eitaro Ozawa), is an irascible would-be tyrant, bullying and mocking not only his family but also his secretary, Miss Yasugi (Yoshiko Kuga), taunting her as an old maid. The workers of his pharmaceutical company are threatening to strike as the film begins, so he has a lot to bluster about. In true comic fashion, there are romantic problems to solve -- Shobei's daughter Chizuko (Mariko Okada) wants to marry an artist, while he wants her to marry the son of one of his executives, if only to provide a suitable heir for his business. His own son, Mamoru, is a nerdy would-be philosopher who goes about inquiring into the meaning of life and has no interest in the business or much of anything else. (He's played by Yusuke Kawazu, unrecognizable as the same actor who played the rebellious Kiyoshi in Nagisa Oshima's Cruel Story of Youth, made the same year.) In the course of the film, the spinster Miss Yasugi will also find love, and even the matriarch of the household, Okudaira's mother-in-law, will recognize the sweet potato vendor as the lost love of her youth -- they're played, incidentally, by Chieko Higashiyama and Chishu Ryu, the elderly couple of Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story (1953). Chuji Kinoshita's harpsichord score lends a delicacy to a film with a good deal of charm.
