Star-Crossed Canvas
Chapter 01 || Chapter 02 || Chapter 03 || Chapter 04
Inspiration for this story came from the art I commissioned and a conversation with @ruki-mukami-dl 's admin. After talking about the art piece with her, I simply had to write this. She has betaread the story. For the longest time, I have wanted to write a DL drama CD-like story, yet, it seems I'm unable to pull off the script-styled writing. I admire everyone who can do it, but personally, I feel like I can't express my visions properly with that. So, once again I went on with prose. Still, I would say that this story is also inspired by DL drama CDs. And I actually would love to see what kind of star-crossed canvases other DL OCs would run into with their lovers. So, if you find the theme inspiring enough, make your own version of it. And tag me. I want to see it too.

Art made by @dlyuiannii as a commission.
Chapter 01
“You have two hours.” The teacher gazed at the third-years she had brought to the special exhibition of the art museum of Kaminashi City. It was sponsored by Sakamaki Tougo and was only open during late hours. “I want you to walk through the museum, pick up a painting, and analyze it. Make notes on how the artist has used colors and how that relates to the artistic trends of the era. Later you will write an essay where you combine these facts with your personal experience of the painting.”
Yuriko listened closely to everything the teacher said and wrote down the instructions. So interesting! She peeked at the earlier notes she had made during the classes. Yosh! She could pull this off!
Suddenly, Yuriko felt how arms snaked around her waist and a jaw landed on her shoulder. A familiar musky scent greeted her nose, making the corners of her mouth instantly curl up.
“Did you get everything, my angel?” Ruki’s whisper sneaked into Yuriko’s ear, sending shivers down her spine.
Yuriko nodded and lifted her hand, showing her notes to Ruki. “Yes. I think so. I know what we are supposed to do.”
“Good girl.” Ruki chuckled. “Then let us go. We need to find our piece of art.”
Their piece of art. Yuriko’s heart skipped a beat. Ruki wanted to use the same painting as her which meant they could do everything together before writing their essays. And later they could compare their thoughts. So perfect!
“Yes, let’s hurry.” Yuriko pushed the notebook into her school bag and meandered around, meeting Ruki’s gaze. “You know… I’m happy that you decided to join me in the art history class.”
Leaning in, Ruki brushed Yuriko’s bottom lip with his thumb. The touch was brief, yet it sent an electric pulse through her body.
“I am not interested in wasting my time trying to draw or paint something. But this requires a different kind of skill set. One that suits me well.” Ruki let his hand slide along the column of Yuriko’s neck before laying it on her shoulder. “Since you insisted you wanted to participate in an art class, this seemed the best possible option.”
And off they went. Ruki captured Yuriko’s hand with his cold one and led her away from their classmates who were just about to start to look for the piece they wanted to analyze. Yuriko gazed around in the dim lighting of the museum. Only the paintings had lights above them but everything else was covered by shadows.
It would be a hard task to pick up one painting only. Everything in the exhibition was extraordinary like it had been a collection of lost pieces of art. Yuriko had never seen them before, not even in books. They all had an aura of mystery around them – she could almost smell it – and they seemed to belong to different eras of human history around the world.
“Umh… Ruki?” Yuriko peeked at the Vampire as they proceeded further into the exhibition halls.
Ruki squeezed Yuriko’s hand as if telling her that he was by her side. “What is it?”
“The teacher… She said that this exhibition is sponsored by Sakamaki Tougo…” Yuriko took a breath. That was a family name she didn’t like to think about. Yet, the curiosity tingled through her. It was impossible to ignore. “I know he is a politician, a famous one. I never thought about it before… but… is he related to the Sakamaki family?”
It was an odd thing to ask for sure. Of course, it could be that the name was simply the same without any connections. More than that. It was likely. Yuriko had met the head of the Sakamaki family, the Vampire king Karlheinz himself. The Sakamakis were pureblood Vampires, so surely a politician had nothing to do with them…
“He is Karlheinz-sama.” Ruki’s voice was low as it caressed Yuriko’s ear. “I would not share that information just with anyone, but you should know. This is his exhibition. He has an eye for human art.”
“Oh… wow…” That was something Yuriko had never imagined about the king. The man with long white hair and golden eyes radiated intimidation like a true demon would, for he was one, of course. It was enticing how he was so interested in humans, simple mortal beings that didn’t compare to supernatural creatures.
Yuriko was still in awe of the thought, looking at the paintings through them. What could have Karlheinz seen in the one with bright flowers? What about that woman who stared into the void? There was no way to know what had gone through the man’s mind as he had picked up each piece.
The couple kept walking until Ruki stopped in front of a painting. A night sky spread in all its glory behind a huge steamship with four huge pipes on it. Yuriko found it oddly familiar even though she was sure she hadn’t seen this picture before.
“Many pieces of art were lost that day…” Ruki approached the painting. “This one has been painted later, of course. It is not very old if you ask me.” He chuckled as if he had told a joke. “Somehow, I still find it intriguing.”
Yuriko stepped closer, gazing at the name tag next to the painting. She didn’t recognize the artist but the ship's name she had heard before. “Oh, oh! I know! I know! I have seen a foreign movie about this. It was made ages ago!”
Ruki scoffed, turning to look at the Kitsune. “Ages ago? I do not have much interest in movies, yet I know it was not too many years since the one you talked about came out. Only…” He stopped talking, perhaps counting how many years exactly. A peal of tiny laughter escaped him. “Forgive me, my angel. It is indeed true that the movie is older than you. Though, I have noticed that you are lured in by things that many would consider not very modern.”
“Oh, you think so, Ruki~?” Yuriko closed the distance between them, pressing her palm on Ruki’s chest before rising on her toes. “I do see old-fashioned things… and people beautiful and captivating.” She allowed a smile to settle on her lips. “Very much so…”
Without permission, Yuriko pursed her mouth against Ruki’s, sucking his bottom lip between hers. He groaned, snatching her in his arms and pressing one hand on the back of her head as his tongue snaked into her wet cavern. Yuriko hadn’t expected such an intense kiss that made the museum around them shatter in her eyes and air swoosh in her ears. Ruki’s smooch was so strong that it filled the room with magic that spirited everything away for a moment.
A cold breeze hit Yuriko’s legs and made her skirt whirl. She gasped into the kiss, hanging onto Ruki. “Oh my gosh!” Her words drowned between them.
“Fuck!” Ruki broke the kiss and pressed Yuriko on his chest. “What did just happen?”
Peeking from Ruki’s embrace, Yuriko realized that they weren’t in the museum anymore but in the sea where an icy wind wiped around them while waves hit the sides of a ship that sailed through the night. Lights from the inside danced on the deck, sparkling from the windows.
“Oh my gosh… what… is this?”

Shoujo Seikan Hyouryuuki 2
Tumblr media
Author: Yuriko Agarizaki
Illustrator: Sono Fuwan
Label: Dengeki Bunko
Release Date: 10 July 2024
My Score: 4/5
Continuing the adventures of Ridley and Watari across space, this volume is much the same as the first. I don't think the quality was quite as consistent across the stories, and some of them were too dark and inflicted too much trauma on the girls for my taste, but it was still a good time overall. This volume leans harder into the yuri element of the series with more queer subtext and flat out text. The chapter "White Planet" is very much a Class S yuri horror (think episode 5 of Flip Flappers) in which they go to a planet where every inhabitant is a walking yuri trope and the yuri goddess really wants to see Ridley and Watari make out. They refuse - not because they are opposed to kissing each other, but because a kiss is something that you should choose to do because you want to, not because someone orders you to. I also liked the Waiting Planet, the Broken Planet, and the Writing Planet. The Child Planet had some good body horror as well. I didn't like this volume as much as the first, but it was still a strong collection of stories featuring delightful protagonists and I look forward to volume 3.

April 2024 Roundup
A little delayed but I will try to keep it short. Did some quick catch up on stand alones and made some progress on various series. But I couldn't resist the siren call of the anthologies so I just have to mention those.
Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai I was really delighted to see licensed but when it dropped I forgot about it.... Or had to put it off for money reasons, I forget. But with a sweet discount code I finally grabbed all 5 volumes of part 1: Disciples of Avan starring the plucky Dai who was raised by monsters freed from the control of the evil lord who was defeated by the Hero and his party. Riku Sanjo's art also goes really well with Akira Toriyama's monster designs while overall having an identity of its own. With a story unique from the games it doesn't just feel like a quick buck manga tie on the game series but a representative work in RPG style fantasy manga from the 1980s and a great read for anyone who wants to be more familiar with manga from that decadeUnfortunately only 5 of 25 volumes of this edition are out for reasons Viz has not publicly disclosed so I will refrain from speculating. But it was comforting to know that Viz's release isn't the only international edition in limbo. Hopefully something gets worked out in the near future.
Okinawa by Susumu Higa also had a long and rocky path to the store shelves. I pre-ordered it I think in 2019 then that was cancelled, then the translation got a digital release then the print version was back on then, finally, in 2023 I saw it in stores. Finally read it and its a great companion to Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths as a wartime criticism of the Japanese army, while the second part serving as a commentary and look into the recent history of Okinawa as a region still existing under soft occupation of the United States army.
Megami Tachi to (With Goddesses) is an anthology of stories written by Katsuo Kawai adapted by various female manga artists. I'm not familiar with his work so I won't go on to describe his style and oeuvre but the involvement of Yamaji Ebine made me want to check it out (her story is about a woman put in charge of taking care of a shrine and its kami, which turns out to be the bare empty basement of an apartment complex). I really liked the variety of stories taking place across various time periods and locations and how each manga artist's own individual styles stood out with the absurdist scripts. And to keep to the collaborative spirit while making his own contribution Kawai himself drew a story based on a script by movie director Satoko Yokohama about the day in the life of an old actor. Was also delighted to find out this collection contained the pro debut work of Yuriko Hara, who'd go on to make Cocoon Entwined!
Wakaba no Rhapsody is a companion to Hana to Waltz, two anthologies highlighting the new talents in the magazines Asuka and Aokishi. The big name draw is Kaoru Mori but I was very impressed by the artistic prowess of all the featured artists, whose impact was heightened by the HUGE trim size of the volumes. Featured in both volumes was Akira Shouno whose one shot collection Good Night Field I read last year and was very fascinated by. Especially the recurring immortal vampire and the yukionna he regularly visits. Really hoping the rest of the featured artists get their own one shot collection in the near future, but while waiting for those I might check out some of their long form series.

As many of you know, Rachael Lillis, The Original English VA for Misty, Jessie, and Jigglypuff, has sadly passed away from Breast Cancer at the Age of 55, It's still really hard to believe that she's gone too soon, And it truly breaks my heart since Like many Pokémon Fans alike, I grew up hearing her voice a lot in the Pokémon Anime. and Jigglypuff has always been one of my all time Favorite Pokémons, And Rachael's Voice Talent was one of the many reasons i fell in love with Jigglypuff in the Anime.
And also in the Smash Series as well, As Jigglypuff was one of my Mains in Melee and Brawl, and of course, Rachael lend her wonderful voice lines for Jigglypuff, and as of Ultimate, The Series still continues to Reuse Rachael's Voice Lines for Jigglypuff in the Series, (Same with Goldeen as well)
Rachael also voiced many other Anime Characters outside of Pokémon, Including Martina in Slayers Next, Charlotte in Berserk (1997), Yuriko Star in Irresponsible Captain Taylor, Utena Tenjou in Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Mito Freecs and Cocco in Hunter X Hunter (2011),
Thank you, Rachael Lillis, For the Many Memories you've given me during my Childhood when you brought Characters like Misty, Jessie, and Jigglypuff to life with your Wonderful Voice Talent, May you Rest in Peace. 🌹

The girls looked particularly good here and I really enjoyed that performance of "stone cold" (although I am starting to get a bit tired of it XD). By now I've gotten used to Kaori doing Wakana's chorus parts but seeing the official MV at the very end of the broadcast is making me miss Wakana again T_T
"from the edge" was fun to watch but ultimately just meh. Not a fan of the song. There are some epic parts but overall, there is too much going on for me and as we all know, LiSA's voice is not my cup of tea.

Author: Yuriko Agarizaki (Author of Ryuugoroshi no Brunhild)
Illustrator: Sono Fuwan
Label: Dengeki Bunko
Release Date: 8 March 2024
My Score: 5/5
This is an anthology-style story following the adventures of Ridley and Watari, two earthling woman who travel across space to find a new home planet after the destruction of the earth. Each chapter focuses on a new planet that they visit.
I really, really liked this. The main characters are incredibly likeable, and have a sweet relationship. The planets were all interesting and different. And the writing style was incredibly smooth. It was so easy to read. I also liked that we're never directly told what led to the earth's destruction. We're given hints and can put together a picture, but it's never explicitly stated. While all of the stories were interesting, the following stuck out to me: The Romance Planet, The Book Planet, The Story Planet, The Sweets Planet, and of course, the Summer Planet. Those were the ones that I remembered clearly after finishing the volume, and they left the biggest impression on me. But honestly, the volume did have a good consistent quality throughout all the stories. There wasn't any particularly bad one.
As far as yuri is concerned, you can interpret the characters as romantic partners. I personally would lean towards interpreting them as queer-platonic but that's really just my personal preference. Either way, the series focuses on two women and their close relationship so yuri fans should like this.
Aside from yuri fans, I'd also recommend it to sci-fi fans and people who like these kind of anthology-style stories, where there isn't much of a main plot, but instead a series of stories focusing on the same protagonists with the same premise.
The author writes in the afterword that they hope to continue writing this series forever if they can, and I find myself wanting to support that dream so I will definitely be buying and reading volume 2.
