Yukigakure Worldbuilding Headcanon

People and Culture

The people of the hidden snow village are a small, silent, yet very proud community. They are not the most hospitable and take a long time to warm up. Having to save on precious air as there is not a lot of oxygen in higher altitudes, hidden snow citizens prefer to use as little words as possible. However, this makes their friendship the more valuable. Once you're considered a friend, you are their family as well. Humor in the hidden snow village is another interesting issue, as it is a rather crude and dry one. However, don't let the cold, uninviting attitude of the hidden snow people scare you off, as they are rather inquisitive. Gossip spreads like a wildfire here. Another fun fact: Fridges and freezers are only used in spring, why waste electricity when you can let your food cool in your backyard? This has led to very creative ways of building fences to protect your dinner from any stray polar bear... or neighbor. The hidden snow people is not one to celebrate many things, except Winter's solstice, which is also celebrated as the impending return of Spring. This spring is an artificial one, as huge heat generators are turned on to melt away the snow and ice.

Clothing and Cosmetics

The hair, regardless of gender, is almost always grown out, often times worn open or at least framing the face, as an additional protection against the cold. Hidden snow people have rather thick and luscious hair, and compared to other ninja nations, the most hair follices on an individual basis, evolution's trick against te cold. Hair care is very important for them, and learning how to braid your hair is a standard practice once you're old enough to brush your own hair. Clothes are worn in thick layers and rarely dyed, richer families making the exception. The ankles and feet are often wrapped in thick fur as cold feet make your entire body feel cold.

Nature

Flora The entire country is covered in snow and glaciers, therefore only allowing for evolution's hardest soldiers. The main vegetation here are icy wastelands, some grasslands and tundra made up of various conifers. Native deciduous trees include birches and some willow species, and birch sap is often served as a drink in the Land of Snow. Another survivor from the village of snow are the lichens that cover the barren rocks, adding at least a little bit of color. There are also some moorlands that run through the country, but these are located outside the village and have hardly been explored.

One special flower that had made its way here is the dandelion, a flower with a high cultural status. Its bloom mirrors the change from short, buoyant spring to the icy, merciless winter. Its leaves are often harvested and can be eaten in salads or used in traditional medicine. (although this traditional medicine is only popular with hidden snow aunties nowadays)

Fauna

The Land of Snow was once densely populated by polar bears, but their numbers have dwindled since the Snow Village was founded, as they were often hunted for prestige. The most widespread mammals are reindeer and musk oxen, and the occasional lemming can be found in the dense ice deserts.

Birdlife includes corvids, gulls, albatrosses and the snow villagers' favorite bird: the puffin. These are strictly protected and are also very popular with children. In addition to these birds, loons, ptarmigans and owls also feel at home in the land of snow - sometimes even one or the other odd duck strays in. If you reach the hard-to-reach coastlines of the Land of Snow, you will often encounter seals and walruses. Around the coast, orcas also make the Arctic Ocean unsafe, which often does not suit the other native whale species (humpback whales, narwhals, belugas, sperm whales and blue whales). Fish in the Land of Snow include cod, shrimp, crab, halibut, redfish, char, turbot and salmon.

Domesticized animals

It's not uncommon for a hidden snow family to own their own sled dog as well as a herd of sheep, depending on where their home is located.

Food

Fish and Other Proteins You know how it goes. Once you go fishing, your dinner is secured. This is the case for the hidden snow village as well. However, unlike Kirigakure, fish is not as extremely accessible as in Kirigakure, since fishermen often have to travel a bit before stumbling upon any fish. Popular protein options are reindeer, lamb and seal meat, which often times is frozen (duh), or brined. Smoking meats is also very common, since spices are not widely accessible here (resulting in a few... questionable food preparation decisions that the locals have come up with over time.) Carbs Although the hidden snow diet is rather high in protein due to carbs not being very accessible, wheat, buckwheat and potatoes are the most common source of carbs. The hidden snow country offers a wide variety of breads. Funnily enough, rice is seen as an "exotic" luxury carb. Fruit The best berries are grown in the Land of snow (and in the iron realm, but that deserves its own post). Most beloved berries include wild strawberries, currants, sea buckthorn, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and mulberries. Aside from berries, the hidden snow village also offers crunchy pears, apples and cherries. The fruit in the hidden snow country are very high in vitamin c, causing a rather sour taste, but also preventing any scurvy outbreaks. Any citrus fruits are a rarity here and can only be grown in greenhouses, making them very expensive, and not very tasty, in all honesty.

Tradition vs Modernity Nowadays, most foods that used to be inaccessible are now grown in large greenhouses. Most hidden snow citizens are not opposed to GMO foods, and in fact, embrace it. Most of the GMO foods are first cultivated in the hidden snow village before making their way to the market. Many youngsters prefer the modern dishes over the traditional ones. Traditionally, the hidden snow citizen always tries to make the most out of the food that they have, resulting in dishes such as blood sausage, blood pudding, brain (double fried to protect from any nasty prions) and many gelatinous foods.

It’s Just a Bit

“It’s just for a scene,” Sasuke told himself as he lay in his plush bed surrounded by many pillows. “We’re almost done with this movie.” He clutched one tightly with his arms and legs, imagining it as the object of his current obsession, Naruto Uzumaki. “We’ll never see her again.” He thought, but there was a burning jealousy seething inside him.

Yukie Fujikaze was a beautiful dark-haired woman with skin like porcelain. She was also a talented actress– one that many in Sasuke’s profession looked up to. This included his long-time coworker, Naruto, who for the sake of a bit, had taken a nap on set after being patched up from his stunts. While he snored away, she approached him, kissing his left cheek gently for a photo.

Naruto would have loved to have been awake for it. That idea only made Sasuke’s bitter resentment grow deeper. This wasn’t the first time he’d felt this way though.

After years of working with the dimwitted goofball that Naruto was, Sasuke had grown inexplicably yet undeniably attached. He didn’t understand why, but whenever anyone strayed too close to his orange glowing ball of sunshine, he despised it. Naruto was his–only his. Sasuke had it bad for the little idiot.

He couldn’t tell him that though. They were just kids and Naruto was a guy like him. Not only that, but Naruto very obviously liked girls.

This was only made more obvious by how Naruto reacted to the candid photo– blushing like a schoolgirl at the idea of being kissed in such an unflattering state. Sasuke didn’t think of it as unflattering though. He considered the image of his beaten blond drooling and snoring away to be quite endearing. The only unflattering part was that stranger kissing him. 

If only it could have been him. He would have kissed him better. He would have sat in bed with him afterwards and held his hand. They would have joked around and laughed together.

Sasuke thought back to the early days of shooting with Naruto. They were both talented in their own right, but they were strangers to each other then. He remembered when the idea for them to kiss on camera was pitched. Naruto was super excited. “Such a cool idea, right?” Naruto asked him, getting far too close. “I mean, what other rivals get to kiss, y’know?”

Sasuke gave in to Naruto’s ecstatic passion that day. The kiss was brief, harsh, and not very pleasant, but it awoke something in Sasuke. His character may have wanted to surpass Naruto, but he, simply wanted him. He just didn’t know how to say it.

So he didn’t. He just let his desire embitter him. He kept on wanting Naruto and hating anyone who got close, but he worried now that he’d lost his chance. Sasuke, the character, would be going on hiatus soon. It was what the plot of the show called for, but Sasuke, the actor, feared that he would be forgotten by his friend. They spent plenty of time together outside of work so that wasn’t the problem. Something else was bugging him. “What if he meets someone else?” He thought, clutching the pillow even tighter and shoving his worry flushed pale face into it in a way that ruffled his already disheveled midnight blue hair.

Only time would tell.

None of this is set in stone, but! I have a rough outline for the Snow Chuunin Exams now.

Chuunin exams timeline

introductions, team training

trip + boat ride. Kakashi gets to come along and Karin spends a chunk of time trying to corner him

Land of Snow + trains, and then Yukigakure. Might put a discussion about the land of snow -> land of spring thing and how yukigakure is going through a little bit of a crisis because depending on how that machine works, it will seriously destabilize a LOT of their jutsu.

First exam is intel gathering/psychological fuckery

idea 1: teams are separated and led to believe that the chuunin exam was actually a Trap and they’re now surrounded in enemy territory, OR, separated and corned by snow nin who want them to give up details on other teams? im not 100% on this. I still need to think on it.

Second exam is wilderness survival in the snow. lmao. good luck. Instead of a scroll, the name of the game is Bounty Hunting. Each team is given a list of targets from the other entrants and they have to bring back one of them alive, while also not losing any of their own members. But also some of the targets are actually chuunin plants, so better hope you were paying attention to who all was actually there at the briefing! (I want one of the teams to accidentally hit a chuunin plant… and then still manage to capture them ANYWAYS. Possibly Gai’s team, because they are maniacs.)

I kind of want Karin to figure out how to use her chains here in a moment of high stress just for maximum “Oh fuck” reactions. Also because they would be really convenient for prisoner transport.

Also speaking of Karin, yes there IS a team from grass taking the exams too! isn’t that fun :)

Third exam is standard tournament arc, obviously. I’m waffling back and forth on it, but I might have it so that instead of 1v1 fights, its 2v2 fights, with each genin “randomly” matched up with someone else from their village (the OTHER reason for the 4 man squads, to have even numbers in the case of only one team from a village getting to the final round).

If I go this route, both Kiba and Hasami get to team up. Snow wanted them to be at a disadvantage because they both have the same fighting style and so any weaknesses would be multiplied… however, uh. The inuzuka’s whole thing is combination attacks. Do you know what’s worse than fang over fang? Fang over Fang over Fang over Fang.

I want to have Killer B’s team show up because Theyre the only named characters from Kumo that we know. Also this gives me an excuse to bring in Karui, who I like.

I also want to have someone from Iwa with Explosion Release, albeit not as stupidly overpowered as deidara, because Explosion Release is like Iwa’s main crazy bloodlimit. (I might branch out into other shounen and just make them a bakugou expy???)

(in fact, I almost certainly will, because the idea made me giggle)

-Also because its land of snow, SOMEONE is getting that bullshit chakra armor from the movie. The main weakness is the fact that they short out if two sets of armor come into contact, but with only one armor set that is less of an issue! Unfortunately, Sakura gets to fight them, and they are going through the wall. She already knows how it works and HER jutsu (punching people through walls) requires very little chakra so there’s nothing for them to steal.

After leaving the Akatsuki, Deidara fled to Yukigakure, a nation considered alien and hostile; a perfect place for a criminal such as himself to disappear. There he perfected his Kekkei Genkai, achieving a new artstyle of destruction. However, with the new era of peace, clients are rare so he makes extra cash by selling his explosives on the black market. His existence has become a rumour known as, the “Angel of Dust”, as his Kekkei Genkai can turn anything or any person he touches into ash, leaving nothing in his wake.

Retirement [ Post War | Blank Period | Boruto ]

In which Deidara does not die during his fight with Uchiha Sasuke. Instead, he survived the C0 explosion. Injured, he crawls away to nurse his wounds or is rescued by a nearby village who heal him. Either or, he is left disfigured and disabled by the blast causing him to lose an arm, a leg and half his face. Due to this, he is pushed into retiring from being a shinobi.

Rehabilitation [ Shippuden | Post War | Blank Period | Boruto ]

Deidara is arrested by Iwagakure. Instead of being lynched, his cousin, Kurotsuchi pleads their grandfather, Onoki, to rehabilitate Deidara, much to the blonde's resistance. Eventually, he is domesticated into a law-abiding citizen. Dependent on the timeline, he is either on house arrest or has been promoted back to captain of the Explosion Corps.

Parenthood [ Shippuden | Post War | Blank Period | Boruto ]

Deidara flees the life of a shinobi and the Akatsuki in order to raise his son, Ame.

Road to Ninja

Deidara is a member of the Akatsuki, a well-known mercenary group. He is identical to his canon counterpart with the exception of being celebrated in Iwagakure for his artwork and captain of the Explosion Corps.

It pained Sasuke to recollect the details of this hunt. Not for any reason other than his motivations were fueled by suspicion and nothing more.

"

He didn't say it out loud, but it was obvious he figured the illness had ties to that damned clan. If not, it was still an oddity to observe. " They closed down the main perimeter of travel into the center of the country with no word to Konoha. Not that we have much trade nowadays, so it may be nothing. "

Sasuke had to know though. False assumptions meant trimming known connections and that felt supplemental enough to his building case study.

Turning away from the microscope, Orochimaru arranged himself in a more comfortable position as he faced Sasuke, leaning against the workbench and crossing his arms. The thin lines of his brows were drawn into tight creases of deep thought as he mulled over the few bits of information his former protégé had offered. They weren't much to go on; Sasuke's tendency for laconic speech painted only a very vague idea of what he'd encountered in the icy hinterlands of Snow Country. "And what were these rumors?" he pressed. "What led you to investigate the matter in the first place? You say the villagers fell to a disease shortly after you asked them about this...creature. That doesn't seem coincidental to me."

She is not twenty when she dies.

She is pushing thirty, but she’ll never tell you how close. It’s rude to inquire about a lady’s age after all.

She lives alone, with a cat. It may be stereotypical, but there it is. Her cat’s name is Con-Con, which is short for Connard. This is because her cat is just kind of a bitch.

That’s okay, because according to her coworkers, she can be kind of a bitch too.

Hasn’t stopped over half of them begging to crawl into her bed.

She’s a material science engineer, working on her phd. As her profession implies, she loves figuring out how things work, and if she can make them more useful, work better.

From the most innocuous fantasy, like the jutsus in the BD she reads in her downtime, to the most dangerous realities, like the nuclear plant where she works. Creation and innovation are her métier.

It is something like irony, then, that she dies with the hands of a luddite who cannot even be inventive enough to use a tool to kill her wrapped around her neck.

She spits into her murderer’s eyes as she goes and takes a vicious sort of pleasure at the impotent rage on the backwards bitch’s face.

Opening her eyes again was surprising.

Not unwelcome, but surprising.

That she is unable to vocalize anything but gurgles and hapless wails is far more unsettling.

It is cold. Colder than anything she has ever known, even bundled up under layers of blankets.

A wizened old lady picks her up and cradles her in arms that shake gently under her weight, hushing and murmuring things in a language that sounds Asian, if she had to guess.

She understands none of what the old woman is saying.

It is soothing nonetheless, though she does wish she was capable of apologizing to the old woman for burdening her so.

Maybe then the kind old lady would stop weeping so much.

Naruto/Koyuki

Naruto remembered how the cold chilled him to the bone.

How Kazahana’s treasure brought forth a gorgeous warmth.

The Land of Snow melting into the Land of Spring.

Just like Koyuki, really. Her cold exterior hiding the warmth of her heart.

“You’re so cheesy,” she giggled when he told her that.

And she smelled just as sweet as her remembered.

“You’re such a pervert,” she gasped. Naruto fucking her slowly, his face buried against her neck. “Even when you were a brat.”

“Your cunt’s as warm as your country, Princess Gale,” Naruto mumbled.

Koyuki laughed, then moaned as she came.

Intricate patterns across her chest, Naruto following along her curves and accentuating her plump breasts.

Dragging rope over her, Hinata’s lips parting in a gasp as he spread her legs, rope connecting her thighs to her bent ankles.

There she was, helpless for him.

The most erotic creature on the planet with pale skin and flushed cheeks. Midnight hair and lavender eyes, peering up at him with want.

All contrasted against red rope and a glistening cunt that Naruto couldn’t wait to taste.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Sakura straighten at that. Huh. Apparently, the Land of Snow mission actually was canon.

“I will be blunt. It is imperative that Konoha presents a strong showing at these exams. Our alliance with the Land of Snow and Yukigakure is still tenuous, approval of their Daimyo or not. Your goal will be to prove to them that keeping this alliance is in their own best interests. In addition, Konoha is not the only village that the Land of Snow is allied with. Both the Land of Earth and the Land of Lightning have been invited as well.” Tsunade fixed us with a hard look. “Konoha cannot afford to look weak in the aftermath of our last Chuunin Exams.”

I swallowed. Well, no pressure, right? If that wasn’t a glaring message of ‘Do Not Fuck This Up’, nothing was.

“Moving on. Unlike our own Chuunin Exams, Yukigakure has requested that entrants be grouped into four-man squads, rather than teams of three. Therefore…” – she gestured to Sakura, Ino, and Chouji – “you three will be divided amongst the remaining Genin teams. Akimichi Chouji with Team 8, Haruno Sakura with Team 3, and Yamanaka Ino with Team Gai.”

I blinked. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting that, but if Iwa was participating, it made sense. Among the big five, only Konoha and Kumo paired Genin into teams of three with a Jounin minder. Kiri nin worked in pairs, and Iwa squads could be anywhere from five to eight members.

That being said, this probably benefited us more than it did them. While the Konoha Chuunin Exams took entrants in teams of three, our missions were almost always four-man squads.

“You will be leaving in two weeks. That is all. Dismissed.”

As we all made to leave, I glanced over at Sakura. Even without my foreknowledge, it was something of an open secret that she’d been training with Tsunade, but I hadn’t actually spoken to her since the academy.

She looked back, and gave the three of us a slight bow. “I’ll be in your care.”

“Ah, yeah, likewise.”

Karin and Ami returned her greeting, though I noted that Ami’s expression had become rather fixed. It took me a moment to realize why, before I remembered our kunoichi classes back in the academy, and the way she’d antagonized Sakura before Ino entered the picture.

Ah.
