GX tober Day 9: Jaden and Yugi!

WHOOOOOO WE DID IT!! WE MADE IT TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY!!

Of course as part of Yugioh GX’s 20th anniversary (and the 25th anniversary of the card game), I HAD to do Jaden and Yugi.

While it’s fun to have the time travel shenanigans and have Jaden interacting with Yami I’m always more fascinated by Jaden interacting with an adult Yugi. We don’t see much of him but I imagine Yugi’s come a long away and the AU’s where he sticks around as a mentor are always a treat.

Anyway. Happy 20 years Yugioh GX!! I gave you an unfair go when you started out but I’m so glad I gave you a chance in 2021!!

Wanted to play around with my 5YL Judai design again this year but also the fact that August 31st is also Miku's birthday too

Ended up looking at the 2023 magical mirai design after the restream of the final Tokyo show and the vibe felt right so yeah I Stole it to put him in!

It is absolutely not lost on me for a second that In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the "superior" classmen are in Obelisk Blue (which was Seto Kaiba's Egyptian God Card of choice) and the most "inferior" classmen are in Osiris or Slifer Red (Yugi/Atem's Egyptian God Card of choice).

GX tober Day 17: Adrian Gecko

Welp here he is! Adrian Gecko with the Peacock Miraculous- because no character could pull the Felix scheme like Adrian- (and sans redemption arc)

I’m going to be honest I’m not happy with this one. I tried I really tried but I discovered the peacock miraculous is one of the most difficult to design outfits for. But that’s ok! Inktober isn’t about perfection, it’s about trying new things using a simple method of inks. This inktober was about me trying and not trying to perfect every image

Leave it to my least favourite character to take me down a peg or two and remind me of my original plans for this series. At least tomorrow is a special fave of mine!

deeply emotional thinkin about gx being 20..... i only got on this train in 2021 ive only been here for such a small sliver of its time on this earth but this show changed my life honestly and genuinely. i thought this show was so lame in 2006 for no damn reason other than it daring to exist and then it rolled up 15 years later to completely blow my mind. yugioh gx showed me just how fun and delightful the yugioh spinoffs could be and i never looked back since. show with my all time favorite yugioh character in it and one of my top fav yutagonists and a cast i love so so much. ive met so many wonderful people via gx and its spinoff gateway experience by extension. it's so funny and so charming and occasionally in true yugioh fashion so messy and so stupid and so catastrophically paced and i love it with all my heart. it's about growing up and remembering not to lose your spark of fun and passion and the ending makes me cry. we're going to be chilling out with the crew in the schoolyard until the heat death of the universe and i wouldnt have it any other way. i love you yugioh gx

Honestly, I think the fact Yugioh isn't popular at all with kids in the West compared to Pokémon needs to be studied.

Most people would (rightfully) blame how overcomplicated the game became compared to the early DM/GX days with all the new meta. But I think part of the blame relies on the way Konami handled the anime too. Both the broadcasting and the core.

I read on the Wiki that Yugioh DM, GX and 5Ds were dubbed by 4Kids and broadcasted it on Saturday morning blocks. When cable and with it the Saturday morning cartoon blocks faded away, 4Kids Entertainment (and their succesor, 4K Media) were very slow in adapting to the new reality. They moved to Nicktoons, then Hulu and then for free on Pluto TV.

Compare this to Pokémon franchise which was pretty much taken away from 4Kids and handled much better by TPC, staying solidly on the same network and then switched to the much more massive and GLOBAL Netflix.

Yugioh has the dubious "honor" of being one of the few remaining anime that still gets localized and dubbed following the heavy censored 4Kids handbooks and I think I finally figured the reason: Konami (who directly handles the dubbing and localization of Yugioh through Konami Cross Media NY, which is basically the remnant of 4Kids) is DESPERATE to build a younger gen Z/Alpha audience on the West.

The average Yugioh player in the West is in their mid 20s who was hooked with the original DM and GX (and maybe also 5Ds). Konami is fine with it but they really wish their game was as popular among kids as the Pokémon TCG is. There's always the fear of the mature audience simply leaving the game because they have bigger responsibilites with work, families, etc. Heck, that's the biggest reason why they didn't bother bringing the physical Rush Duels cards.

Which is why they focus heavily on targetting their shows towards kids. They could perfectly make more loyal-to-the-original teenage/mature focused dubs and broadcast them on Adult Swim or Crunchyroll. But because of their desperation in building a new audience, they instead make kiddified dubs so SEVENS is shown on Disney XD of all places.
