their kiss, laced with the perfume of dahlias
Written for Femslash February 2024
Day 7. Dahlia
Title: their kiss, laced with the perfume of dahlias
Ship: Visionshipping | Ishizu/Mai
Word Count: 1,469
Universe: Duel Monsters
Rating: G
Tags: Established Relationship, Fluff, Holidays, Public Displays of Affection
For all the gravity with which Ishizu carried herself, there was an element of which had never felt real to her.
She was sheltered. Sculpted. A mouthpiece, an extension of her previous incarnation’s self and the wearer of the Millenium Necklace.
For example, she knew what flowers were. How they would be described botanically, what purpose they served in the ecosystem and even admire their beauty. She even had her favourites amongst the ones she had read of but text on a page and secondhand accounts, they couldn’t accurately depict the scent of a flower, or its touch.
And that was just a trivial example of the Plato’s cave that Ishizu found herself within.
There was so much outside of the realm of Ishizu’s lived experience. She could forgive her brother for wanting to live it. No one else could live it for him, after all. Only he could. That was, however, not an indulgence that Ishizu would give herself.
At least not until her duties were done and the ghosts of the past had been put to rest.
However, Ishizu refused to allow this to be a weakness, to even give a hint of it. She kept her mouth closed on all occasions and allowed the Millenium Necklace to wield her as necessary but there was one incident where her guard slipped.
She crossed paths with Kujaku Mai and that desire to feel real, to experience what was real, wafted through Ishizu as she caught the scent of Mai’s perfume in passing. They were going in opposite directions. Mai was on her way to the communal restrooms; Ishizu was on her way to her room and just that…
It was enough to weaken her and entice her.
“What a beautiful perfume.” Ishizu thoughtlessly said to herself, not even realising she was thinking out loud.
Not until the click of Mai’s heels on the hard flooring of the Kaiba Corp. blimp ceased and she turned around, laughing, amused, “Thank you. It's a Mexican perfume with dahlias. Quite an unusual scent, don’t you think?”
“Ah, yes, indeed.” Ishizu said and she would have liked for the small talk to end there.
“Have you ever been?” Mai asked. “To Mexico?”
“No.” Ishizu replied.
“I think you’d like it there. Just a hunch though.” Mai shrugged.
And now it did.
Ishizu held onto her sigh of relief. She did not want to drop her mask of mystery and mystique but she could tell Kujaku Mai had a keen eye for details on people. Just from hunches.
The fact that it was a dahlia based perfume… Well, now that was a funny trick of fate. Ishizu would have to admit because she had never seen a dahlia in real life, nor would she have begun to have guessed that was the smell of them but dahlias were one of the flowers she liked in theory.
It was every bit as unique a smell as her books had promised. It was fresh and crisp with a sharp undertone of bitterness to mix with the natural floral scent of the bright and eclectic flower. Ishizu liked it.
She did not allow herself, however, to admit she liked it especially on Mai.
Dahlias symbolised good taste and that seemed to be an apt association for Kujaku Mai: a woman often embroiled in what others might call opulence and luxury.
Mai was famed for her keen sense of smell, likely having hyperosmia as her now debunked strategy of cheating that Ishizu had heard about involved her lacing her cards with different perfumes. Forty cards to a deck, well, of course she would have quite the collection of perfumes to cycle through.
Still, that one little encounter, it survived surprisingly well in the every twisting, merging and unmerging of fate, like river deltas in perpetual flux because on the other side of it, Ishizu and Mai found themselves again. Several years later. Going in the same direction this time.
Mai was a globetrotting Duelist with her name chanted through electric crowds. Ishizu’s archaeology was famed far and wide, she was making waves in academia. It seemed only natural, somehow, that their paths would cross and the connection that they shared all those years ago would turn into a close companionship.
Especially now that Ishizu was free of those duties that had kept her weighed down akin to Atlas.
“See?” Mai giggled. “I told you that you’d love Mexico.”
Their relationship didn’t have a proper name. Mai didn’t want to be tied down and nor did Ishizu but they still wanted to be attached to one another. Both loved their country of origin and freedom as young adults on the other side of twenty-something to give that up.
However, lovers and girlfriends might be close but their holidays, like this one, were almost akin to honeymoons given that both ladies disavowed work on them.
“Yes, you did say that.” Ishizu said but she was almost too enchanted by her surroundings to reply - and she sounded just as airy. Her heart welled up with emotions as she added, “You remembered?”
“How could I forget?” Mai asked as she snaked her arm around Ishizu’s waist, pulling her in for a half embrace. “It was our first meeting.”
Ishizu was highly flattered by the reply as Mai walked her through the Sunday market. They were going to visit Xochimilco later, in the afternoon, and see the canals and listen to the music of mariachi bands playing for tourists like them but already, Ishizu was entranced by the more ordinary locales such as this marketplace.
These streets were festooned with traditional architecture and buzzed with commerce. People came and went in throngs, there was chatting and laughter, bargaining and purchasing. The smell of food was strong and made Ishizu’s mouth water as she was tempted by every street vendor or stall selling fruit picked fresh this morning in the wee hours of dawn. The hustle and bustle, the clamour of it all, absolutely enraptured Ishizu.
She wasn’t a smiley woman, not by a longshot, but her expression was open and light-hearted as she wandered the cobblestone streets with Mai.
The sheer joy and delight of it all, and underneath an endless azure sky, was a far cry from Ishizu’s upbringing. The desert was barren by night, the stone halls silent even during the height of day and so, she all but celebrated this moment to be amongst the sights and sounds, the smells, too.
As Mai picked something out from one of the stalls - this one run by a kindly-looking elderly lady and her middle aged son. She nodded, asking wordlessly for permission, to pick up a glass bottle and she beckoned for Ishizu’s attention.
“No way, I thought these weren’t made anymore.” Mai said, excited. “Look, it’s the perfume I was wearing when I met you. Must be our lucky day.”
Ishizu blinked curiously. The bottle was pink and multifaceted, with gold lettering on the front of it and attached as an old-fashioned, fuzzy squeeze. Mai paid for it and immediately gifted it to her.
“Do you want to try wearing it?” Mai asked, her voice dropping low to a whisper as she got on her tip-toes to talk to her.
“I would.” Ishizu replied.
Mai hummed as she went back down onto the balls of her feet. They shuffled off to the side, to a dip in the cement and a sliver of the alleyway between the old buildings that enclosed either side of the stone channel the marketplace inhabited.
Mai took Ishizu’s hand and undid the cap, having enough forethought to not use an asthmatic trigger in public lest it cause an issue. And so, she gently rubbed it on Ishizu’s wrist by taking off the cap and tapping it, coaxing out the liquid to spritz Ishizu.
The fluid of the perfume was cold on Ishizu’s skin. Runny, too, and of course pungent. Ishizu got a deep breath of it even from far away but when Mai recapped it, she took that as her cue. She drew up her hand to her face and closed her eyes.
She savoured it. Not just the perfume but all her surroundings. Ishizu was certain, she was in love. With Mexico, with her favourite flowers, and yes, with Mai. She smiled a small smile as her eyes opened ever so slightly.
“Thank you, Mai.” Ishizu said. “I love it.”
“I think it suits you, too.” Mai flirted.
Ishizu didn’t need to read minds to know what Mai was insinuating so she leaned down. Mai initiated a kiss and Ishizu chastely returned her affections. She felt the warm wind blow and their kiss, laced with the perfume of dahlias, was lost in the humdrum ordinance of it all.

Yugioh Rarepair Week Day 5!!
Of course I’m gonna choose to do Tweetshipping for this day. I mean, theres literally a crossover prompt??? So I NEEDED to draw them :3
Also I drew them in the outfits of Mozarta the Melodious Maestra and Fairy Cheer Girl (but you cant see that too well (was gonna do another drawing but fully body to properly see the outfits but I’ll probably just do that another day away from this challenge :3)
Tomorrow I’m probably gonna do circus but it’s probably gonna mostly be a bunch of non-refined drawing as I’m gonna find out the outfits, their roles and stuff + I dont know if I wanna do multiple ships too??? But yeah :333
I definitely could have made them a big more expressive but hey </3 I’ll save all my talent for tomorrow /j /nsrs

For the ask game here - hmmmmm........ Carryshipping, Deathshipping, aaaand.... let's go random: Dragonshipping!
(Okay, and Mumbleshipping :D)
Thank you so much for asking! 💛
CARRYSHIPPING
1. What made you ship it?
@kira-quartz of course! I had never even considered it before, but I discovered this right as I was starting to explore Buddyshipping, so the timing was perfect.
2. What are your favorite things about this ship?
I think kira said it best when they said that Tristan is the earth to Joey's sun and Ryou's moon, and there's no better way to explain their dynamic.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?
This ship only works for me with Joey still a half-feral street-kid.
DEATHSHIPPING
1. Why don't you ship it?
I had no familiarity with the manga at all for my first few years of being into Yugioh, so my impression of Ryou formed completely without any of the "this boy likes dark and occult things and is such a weirdo." I also don't see Yami Marik as being anything other than an entity of hated and vengeance and power, and so he's not really capable of feeling anything else? That's just my understanding of the character, and I don't trust that Yami Marik wouldn't hurt him (but I still wrote Deathshipping into my Tendershipping fic because that whole story was a challenge to myself to see those ships differently). I will still like some Deathshipping posts and content, but I wouldn't say that I ship it.
2. What would have made you like it?
Maybe if Yamima weren't so thoroughly violent and deranged in every moment of his canon appearance, I could dig it, and maybe if I'd been exposed to weirdo!Ryou earlier on, I would be more into it.
3. Despite not shipping it do you have anything positive to say about it?
I do think it can be really interesting as a background ship to Thiefshipping, because it feels so unlikely. I also like the idea of Yamima defeating Marik and Bakura but leaving Ryou behind and freed from the Ring. The size difference is definitely 😘👌
DRAGONSHIPPING
1. What made you ship it?
Honestly, just the deep respect that the characters have for each other in canon, and how they help each other grow. It's a very low-key ship for me, in that I don't seek out the content or think about it at all, but when I do see it, I give it a thumbs up. 👍
2. What are your favorite things about this ship?
The whole thing about Joey definitely beating Yami in a duel to win back his Red-Eyes card and then never mentioning it, not once, not even to Kaiba. There's just such respect and humility in the fact that Joey keeps it a secret and doesn't think any less of him for the loss. These are two dudes that will give their all in a fight against each other and love each other for it, even when they think the other is completely wrong.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?
Yami bottoms to Joey, you can't convince me otherwise. He's a pillow princess.
MUMBLESHIPPING
1. What made you ship it?
I couldn't stand having to choose between Euroshipping and Minorshipping (and Mastershipping), so I just squished them all together. My very old FFN fic, just called Mumbleshipping, actually started out as a one-shot that I wrote as a challenge to myself of "let me find really obscure yugioh ships and write them for fun" (that's why the list of ships I've written is so long and includes things like Revenge, Lavender, Midriff, and Vengeance). But then I was like, "this really does make sense though, so what if I just... Continue the scene?" And it turned into the mumble boys being on vacation in an Italian villa, living the good life, Ryou and Duke forcing Seto to stop working and truly relax, until I got restless and threw in a whole lot of drama for each of the boys in turn, and lots of Mokuba being a cutie and everyone being horny and traumatized.
2. What are your favorite things about this ship?
Everything. The shared dad trauma. The way they're all on the fringe of the Yugi friend group. Mokuba becoming a surrogate sibling to Duke and Ryou. The way the four of them settle into becoming a family. The fact that they don't have all shared experiences: Duke doesn't know Duelist Kingdom, Ryou doesn't know most of Battle City or season four or Noah's Virtual World, neither of them know the Legendary Heroes arc. Duke doesn't know anything at all about Death T. They all have enough fuck-uppery going on in their lives, and they all have their own ways to deal with it and not give up. They're good for each other, and you can't convince me otherwise.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?
*booming voice* I AM THIS SHIP. I AM THE CAPTAIN AND THE SAIL. I REVIVED THIS SHIP FROM THE ASHES OF OBSCURITY. Do you seriously think there's a popular ANYTHING about this ship?

What Your Favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! Ship Says About You
Okay so I was listening to Doubleca5t’s videos-check him out if you haven’t done so, and then my mind went to:okay but ygo.
So here it is. What your favorite yugioh ship says about you. Warning: You may find yourself feeling absolutely called out and attacked by the following statements. I will not apologize.
All the Yami/Hikari Pairings (Yugi/Yami Yugi, Malik/Yami Malik, Ryou Bakura/Yami Bakura):You’re just here for some yaoi.
Puppyshipping (Seto Kaiba/Jonouchi):You like belligerent sexual tension. You just do.
Seto Kaiba/Anzu Mazaki:Your ideal relationship dynamic is Beauty and the Beast.
Jonouchi Katsuya/Anzu Mazaki:Your ideal relationship dynamic is sitcom wife sitcom husband.
Jonouchi/Honda:Your ideal relationship dynamic is two bros chilling in a hot tub.
Mai/Vivian Wong:You want a girl who not only can kick your ass but will do so upon request.
Jonouchi/Otogi:You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of dog-related nicknames. In hindsight, this also applies to puppyshipping, but that’d be too obvious a joke.
Kisara/Seto Kaiba:You are a firm believer that this is the natural conclusion of Kaiba’s dragon fetish.
Sennenshipping (The Seven Sennen Items. Yes.): You are way too deep into crack.
Dragonshipping (Jonouchi/Yami no Yuugi) :In a world where everyone runs from a challenge, you are the rare person who runs towards it. When everyone else has finished their fight, you press onward, never stopping. For you, no mountain is too high, no river is too deep, you have made a commitment to your community and done what so many others could only dream of; you are the few, the proud THE MANGA READERS
BBQshipping (Yami no Yugi x fire, yes fire):You just like watching Yami set people on fire. Which he does in the manga. A lot.
Tendershipping (Ryou Bakura/Yami Bakura):You have not read the manga.
Protectshipping (Honda/Ryou) :You just wanted good things for Ryou, and really, who wouldn’t?
Peachshipping (Anzu/Yugi):You’re a sucker for cinnamon rolls, too good for this world, too pure.
Sealshipping (Atem/Mahaad): You’re a sucker for servant/royalty relationships.
Shrimpshipping (Weevil/Rex Raptor) :You’re a sucker for comedic side characters.
Rebecca/Mokuba:You are a sucker for cute sweet nerd kid crushes. Fluffy and wholesome.
Darkshipping (Yami Bakura/Yami Yugi):You’re a sucker for enemies to lovers.
Heartshipping (Yugi/Ryou): okay this is just the same joke for peachshipping, but like even more so. Alternatively:Your ideal relationship dynamic is two gamer nerds nerding out together.
Chaseshipping (Honda/Otogi):You believe love triangles are best resolved by ignoring the axis.
Toonshipping (Seto Kaiba/Pegasus) :You like mind game ships.
Prideshipping:Looking back at your childhood, you can pinpoint Seto Kaiba as the beginning of your crippling addiction to edgy boys who have trouble talking about their feelings, or he may not have started your addiction, but he did not help.
Roseshipping (Cecelia/Pegasus) : You are Pegasus.
Puzzleshipping (Yugi/Yami Yugi):You could recite every line of dialogue from the “I want to be with you forever” scene from memory. Also, you were either traumatized by the ending of the show and are now in heavy denial, or you’re too afraid to watch it and still haven’t seen it, cowards.

I saw spoilers to the manga this morning. I have to say Yuuta is shaping up to be one of my favourite out of all the canon Yuu's thus far.
For one, he's plus-sized, which is not only awesome rep, but is a brilliant choice for this arc in particular. Azul has a lot of body image issues and is heavily implied to have an eating disorder. (Which makes certain writing choices in the game come off as tone deaf like everyone laughing at Azul's fat picture, but I digress.) Because of his past bullying, he lashes out at others and tries his hardest to be his best self, including taking drastic measures to stay skinny. To see Azul be contrasted by a guy who is plus-sized and confident in his own body makes the arc a lot more interesting. This way Azul is in conflict with someone who gets where he's coming from, but took a different path challenges his mindset.
He also comes off as the most normal guy out of all of them so far. Yuuken and Yuuka are both trained fighters. Don't get me wrong, seeing them kick ass is cool, but it's not super relatable to a lot of us. Whereas Yuuta just has a part-time job in a restaurant, which adds to the idea that he's a normal guy thrusted into this bizarre situation. Yuuya, the light novel protagonist, is like Yuugi from YuGiOh, but really poorly constructed. Yuugi hates violence, because it's implied he's from the ghetto, and is constantly surrounded by it. Him being revolted by it makes sense. With Yuuya, he hates it, because he doesn't like conflict. That doesn't make any sense. Even people with social anxiety disorders are adverse to violence because it stresses them out, not just because of the idea of it. Hating conflict to the point you don't have any hobbies or friends is ridiculous. His character makes no sense and falls apart the more you think about it. Whereas with Yuuta, he seems believable while also challenging Azul's character.
I don't want to call anything yet, since the manga is just starting, but I'm really liking him so far. Kudos to the writer for crafting a good protagonist.
Depending on how his personality and how crafty he's written, I might even ship him with Azul like I do with Idia. (Because I headcanon that Azul is pan, but is attracted to intelligence, so he only falls for smart people.) I'll still ship him with TWST Tiana in my multichapter fics, though.

Can you talk about Komaru x Kokichi more?
Their a bit interested and I wanted to know more about their relationship!!!
This is a ship held together with one piece of art and my danganronpa headcanons truly, which I will be glad to share.
First off, Komaru's a jock with a love of fun, while I wouldn't call Kokichi a jock he CERTAINLY has a lot of energy and a love of fun himself. I could EASILY see him coming out of nowhere, slamming a hand on her arm, and yelling TAG and Komaru does not HESITATE to give chase beyond some mild complaining as she runs that she was doing something! Komaru has so much energy and gets SO into things, even in the middle of murder demon hunting city she's getting excited about puzzles and doing fun voices, Kokichi would LOVE that.
Kokichi's a nerd at heart and Komaru's a bit of a nerd as well, Kokichi likes anime, manga, and games, they could absolutely have in depth conversations about some of Kokichi's interests in pop culture that he doesn't normally have people to talk about, they ARE friends on Pokemon Go. Kokichi HAS beaten her in yugioh 20 times in a row. While Komaru is more of a 'girls' manga person then shounen, she's definitely still likely a fan of the more popular series. Komaru is picking up his yugioh references, he is finally vindicated in making them. Like she reads manga about a girl with a bomb inside her, Komaru's into some NICHE stuff.
Komaru is gullible but she's also smart, so while she's definitely falling for a lot of lies at first, she's going to get a lot better at spotting them over time, and may even lie back to him, which he won't mind because komaru is a TERRIBLE liar so it's just kinda funny. If Komaru can become best friends with Toko and Syo, Kokichi isn't going to be as much of a challenge if Komaru decides she wants to hang out with him. Her ability to just take things as they are, means even if Kokichi spouts the most outrageous lies she'll give a fond sigh and be like "that's our Kokichi."
With Komaru's sense of justice, she'd be willing to help Kokichi a lot with minor pranks, she is laughing when shuichi runs headfirst into clear tape like those videos. However her determination and sense of doing what's right means she can also better stand up to Kokichi when he's in the wrong or doing something risky.
As most of his organization, if not all of it besides Kokichi, would be untalented, I have always felt like kokichi would have a secret respect and curiosity not many other talented have for the untalented along with a skepticism towards the authority of the ultimates.
Sure the ultimate artist can make something beautiful, but Kokichi is looking for a sense of soul, a sense of emotion, something that screams "I AM HERE, YOU CANT ERASE ME" things that challenge society, challenge perceptions, and you don't really get that with ultimates due to ultimates being the upper echelon of society that should be challenged. Komaru is so herself, and so driven, she puts soul into everything she does, and I think Kokichi would respect that a bit. I think Kokichi would love to see what she was capable of if he put a can of spraypaint in her hand and pushed her towards a blank wall.
So with both of them being childish at heart energetic people who put passion and soul into everything they do along with being total dorks in secret, I could easily see them getting along. Komaru's down for whatever Kokichi will throw her way as a challenge, and Kokichi's down for seeing what this strange girl who society says should be a nobody is going to do to change that world who tries to stop her. Even if you don't want them romantically, I think they'd become really good friends if given the chance as Komaru helps him put itching powder in everyone's clothes with a few sarcastic comments about Kokichi being a bad influence.
Also I like calling it Komouma instead of oumaru because then it feels like im tricking people into thinking my posts going to be komaeda you FOOLS get TRICKED.
Also heres the playlist

Yugioh OC Week - Day 1: Introductions
Hi everyone! I know this one is a little late but I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time for this but here she is! This is my Arc V OC Botum Nuon <3 She's a turbo duelist from the Synchro Dimension!
Initially born to refugees of a neighboring country, she becomes the adopted daughter of a former underground dueling queen and her mechanic husband. Along with Yugo and Rin, they're the only family she has and with that, she would protect them with her life.
After being found by Reiji in the Standard Dimension, she joins his Lancers to protect Dennis (her mentor) and Shun (her rival).
After seeing how the Lancers were mostly guys except for Serena and how there were no original Synchro characters that weren't Yugo or Rin, I ended up making her to fil in that void. She's kind of like my 'fix it' character for Arc V gdfjshhgfdssdg
A few notes about her here (Arc V Spoilers in here and please don't make fun of me for saying this) <3
Based off the song Switched on Lotus by Susumu Hirasawa and of course Lotus Flowers themselves!
youtube
Lives in the Satellite with her adoptive parents, in a small portion populated by other Southeast Asians.
Her hobbies include drawing, daydreaming, taking long walks/rides and writing card lore.
She wants to become a card designer someday.
A lot of people who know me would assume that she was made to be shipped with Dennis but no she's Reiji's girlfriend hgdsffdg
She's Cambodian because I am and you know Yugioh could use more dark skinned girls (Shoutout to Masumi and Asana btw)
The words Rebirth and Ascension are in reference to the story about the creation of Lotus flowers I made specifically for this. They're also a theme with her.
She goes to XYZ months before the invasion due to Zarc.
Her and Dennis are Zarc's Envoys, created to protect and guide their Yu boys with love and kindness.
She ends up falling in love with Reiji, one of Ray's Envoys.
She claims that she's Shun's rival because Shun taught her how to XYZ summon and, knowing that he always wants a good challenge, acts as his rival to return his kindness.
She loves snacks, she's almost always have one on hand.
Her bangs are covering a marker. When she was arrested as a child, they gave her one that, since she was too young for it, did damage to her face. Seeing the marker scares her because it reminds her of those memories.
Uses plants decks. Her plants are meant to highlight the lack of nature in the Satellite.
She can talk to Duel Spirits bc of Zarc, same with Dennis

Space Oddity in Blue Major
Written for the @femslash-friday-prompts
Prompt: Odd
Title: Space Oddity in Blue Major
Ship: Teardropshipping | Aoi/Aqua
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains
Rating: T
Word Count: 2,419

Nervously, with soulful, brown eyes which were cautiously bright, Aoi raised her hand and in a quiet voice accompanying this motion, she said, “I’ll do it.”
The argument and baleful chatter ceased all but immediately as all eyes – furious – turned her way but Aoi was unerring. She straightened her back and took heart. Took conviction.
“I volunteer.” Aoi piped up, gravely. “I volunteer to do it.”
“No, you can’t.” one of her crewmates – Hosoda – insisted, his voice sharp and grating. “What about your brother? He would be devastated, let someone-"
“He’ll understand.” Aoi cut in. “It’s one of us or all of us. He will understand. Tell him… I wanted to be an angel. A blue angel. A saviour. He’ll understand.”
Her words were divisive to say the least. Piercing into the minds of her fellow crewmates like incisor teeth into their flesh. She was, admittedly, the one with the most skill with the task at hand. When it came to technology, Aoi wasn’t a born prodigy but she was scrappy. She worked hard, earned her keep and outshone most of the natural talents. She could do these repairs in her sleep and in half the time and oxygen that anyone else on board the rocket ship could.
It also just so happened that Aoi was also the one with the most to lose back on Planet Earth. Worst of all, she was right. One of them could die or all of them could die. The simple trolley problem but this time, the one at the helm was the one who wanted to be tied to the railway tracks.
There was a crackle over the intercom. The staticky noise filled them all with heavy, knotting dread until greetings were made and then all-consuming whomp of guilt in the bottom of their stomachs increased as words rang through, true and clear.
Ground control.
Ground control to Major Zaizen, no less. The permission was granted. They all understood the gravity of the situation. Miss Zaizen most of all as the others slowly, reluctantly accepted the vow that she had made. She would save them at the cost of her own life.
Farewell, Major Zaizen. May your brother’s love be with you.
The decision was made.
She put on her helmet. She strapped an oxygen tank to her back and she looked out onto the final frontier. Her final frontier.
The Planet Earth was blue. Her favourite colour, she mused bittersweet as the enormity of her home planet was just a small dot in the far, far away distance of the galaxy. Aoi stood on the threshold of the quarantined capsule. It was a reinforced glass sphere with a three-hundred-and-sixty degree view of all the skies in the Milky Way. It was beautiful and yet, looking unto the stars, these dying balls of gases, they didn’t look like they had the time cycle before. Or even as they had when she once stood on the soil and grass of Planet Earth.
These stars… They looked so peculiar in hues of blue and silver as Aoi blinked away tears. It really was true. When you were about to die, all your life flashed before your eyes. Staring out and into the vastness of space with her duty so heavy on her shoulders, Aoi felt so peculiar in general as she was made to recall her life so far.
She remembered the faces of her parents, freshly married. She had been so nervous around her step-father but once she warmed up to him, she was a bonafide Daddy’s girl, making her Mummy proud by getting along with the new members of the family.
She remembered the kind face of her brother whom she had just met and all the times they read her favourite book together. Aoi had been a voracious reader and she loved fantasy books above all. Blue Angel was her favourite. She remembered telling the kids in her kindergarten class that one day she was going to be an angel. None of them ever believed her. But look what she was doing now. Tada. Dreams really do come true, even if it is in a twisted way.
Regardless, Aoi’s childhood was something she reflected on with more nostalgia than not. It had been so, so sweet but far too short. Her parents’ lives were taken too soon by an accident and the Zaizen children were forced out of all they had known. Afterwards, her brother, Akira, became like a father to her all the same as he was an older step-brother to her. He shepherded her from place to place, keeping her safe, keeping meals on the table.
She remembered her childhood friend who was with her all the way until high school. Well, on and off all the way through high school. There had been some pretty serious spats in elementary school but it was an entirely different war when they were tweens. Middle school was a battleground for anyone. Least of all for a pair like they were. A quiet nerd and a bombastic airhead. Regardless, Miyu was many of her first. First friend. First kiss. First break-up even though they were never really dating. First make-up and Aoi missed her dearly. She wished they’d had a better goodbye than just fading from each other after graduation.
She remembered university and grad school, too. All the training she had undergone to be in this position at all. Aoi had put her mind and body through the utmost, absolute worst. It had been gruelling but it had been worth it. She was privy to sights and emotions that only a select few - the astronauts, the cosmonauts, the explorers of the stars - could ever know and that helped her.
It distanced itself from her as Aoi found herself in the present once more. Knowing what she must do.
All her life, every second, every minute, every hour: it all culminated like this.
In space.
In becoming a star.
The papers had wanted to know whose designer brands she had worn to fundraising galas and if she would sign these souvenirs… just in case she didn’t make it. Even if she had made it. She was still a woman and she was still an astronaut, a legend in the making and it consoled Aoi to know that what waited her soul, the memory and idea of her, was a medal. She hoped that Akira would cherish it in her place.
There had been highs and there had been lows and now there was this.
Something which was both. And neither. Caught between extremes, just like her fate which was in her own hands.
The quarantine period was over. Hosoda and the others were fine with letting Aoi disembark and unto her doom. It was the most agonising and quiet fifteen minutes of Aoi’s life but when she disembarked, the roar of serenity in her ears, the droning of her blood, was unfathomable. She knew what she had to do. She could do it with her eyes closed, she could do it in her sleep, and she absolutely could do it as the very last thing she ever did.
And it really would be the last thing she did.
Aoi made the external repairs with all the mindfulness of a professional. Not a bead of sweat rolled down the side of her face but a sigh of contentment did escape her lips when she finished. With plenty of time to spare, she noticed when she checked the gauge on her oxygen tank.
“Hosoda,” she said into her intercom, “I’ve finished. You’ve got a couple minutes tops to make your getaway and go back home.”
There was a moment and Aoi felt her stomach drop. The pause was a few seconds long but filled with static until a clear cut voice came through on the line.
“Roger.” Hosoda replied. “And Zaizen?”
“Yes?” Aoi said, worried this was wasting time but she could tear the tears in her captain’s voice.
“My wife will thank you. You’ve really made the grade. We all thank you. Good night, Blue Angel.” Hosoda said and Aoi began to cry.
She let go of the capsule.
It was an easy decision, Aoi made as she let go of the side of the rocket and then undid the belt that kept her tethered. She relaxed as she allowed the sensation of floating overtake all her senses. The sphere may have given her so much more vision than what she could make out through her helmet but the stars around her were still beautiful, still peculiar but even better was the sight of her comrade’s survival.
The rocket took off. The boosters sputtered and there was just enough distance that Aoi could comfortably observe that she wasn’t in the danger zone despite how smoke plumed around this little piece of the vacuum of space.
It was either burn to death or freeze to death. Caught between two extremes didn’t suit a watery girl like Aoi but if since she had her choice, she wanted to go peacefully into the cold, dark abyss of space.
Aoi watched as the rocket’s boosters, now fully functional again because of her sacrifice, lit up like fireworks. For a second, watching those flames and those sparks, the embers that scattered, the tears that Aoi cried her happy tears. However, such joy dissipated even quicker than the fanfare that allowed the drifting, tin can that was once a tomb became a spaceship again.
She smiled, bittersweet, as she listened into conversations she had been purposefully excluded from. They applauded her. They thanked her. Until the range was cut and it was so, so cold. So lonely. Their gratitude was just gratitude. Nothing that Aoi could hold onto, not physically, as she allowed her eyes to close.
As she allowed herself to sleep.
There was no use delaying it. No use fighting it. She just had to bide her time until the cold took her and until her oxygen tank was empty.
She drifted. She floated.
She drifted and she floated for what felt like aeons. For lightyears, even.
Until her lips were blue, until her fingertips were blue.
Aoi was helpless as these feelings turned to literal frost inside of her. She was helpless but she didn’t mind it. It wasn’t the worst thing. There had been times as a child when she had starved, this was no worse than that. This was even softer. She accepted her grisly end. Forever lost but at least she was asleep.
Sleeping. Until she bumped into something.
“Huh?” Aoi managed to eek out some sort of noise from her mouth.
For so long, there had been nothing and to be reminded of something, Aoi felt muddled. It wasn’t hard, like a rock, nor was it soft like flesh. It was more… buoyant than that, she bounced slightly off this structure and she knew she had to get a look. She had to know more.
It was her sick and last, dying curiosity.
Aoi struggled for a moment before she finally batted ice off her stiff eyelashes as she tried to open her eyes, too. There was something strange. She had been in this fugue state of hypothermia for so long that to feel anything else was jarring. Discordant. Aoi moved her head just slightly and she could feel the ice and tear rip her suit as she tried to do so. That would only hasten her death, surely, but she saw the most peculiar thing.
The oddest thing: an octopus.
An octopus in the shape of a neuron like the ones she had in her very brain as her grey matter turned blue.
“I’m so sorry, child of the planet Earth.”
The octopus spoke and had a soothing voice. Feminine, she sounded, the tones of her voice accompanied by the trickling of water, like a gentle delta welcome to play in during summer.
Aoi couldn’t believe her eyes. It was only logical to believe that there was life in outer space but she hadn’t expected intelligent life. She thought of germs and plants, not… an angelic octopi.
The octopus-like alien dipped her head low, Aoi felt the bubble of her halo, like two pigtails, bump against her and her tentacles - six of them - coiled around Aoi’s body in an embrace. She nuzzled against the sphere of Aoi’s helmet and there was such pity to the glow of her one, big pink eye in the middle of her head. It reminded Aoi of the cherry blossom moon when it was at crescent.
“Don’t be… sorry…” Aoi continued to eek out. “I chose this.” Her breathing was haggard. It was hard to breathe. She must be - no, she had to be - out of oxygen by this point. Her vision was blurring but it just turned to hazy pinks and cyans, the entirety of the alien whose embrace she had found herself in. Aoi smiled. She couldn’t believe it but she was smiling as she, in turn, assuaged the anxiety of the alien. “I chose this. I wanted to be… among the angels and now… I am.”
That only appeared to break the alien’s heart. She held onto Aoi tighter and Aoi tried her very best to reciprocate. It was difficult. It was stiff but she managed to bend her arm upwards so she could try to caress the side of the alien’s face. Regardless, she was comfortable in the embrace and the surrender.
“Well…” the alien murmured. “You are safe now. You are amongst higher beings, human.”
“Thank you.” Aoi said and she closed her eyes again, feeling depleted and exhausted by all she had to muster just for a few words or to keep her eyes open.
She was so tired. She was so sleepy. Aoi wasn’t sure if this was a delusion, her sanity fraying at the edge as she teetered between life and death before she finally succumbed or if this really was an encounter of the third time. Though, she did feel safe with this alien.
She may very well wake up afterwards.
She may not.
All Aoi knew for certain was that she had done it. She had achieved her dream of being an astronaut, of being a blue angel, to have swam and to have flown in the heavens. Now, she was in the hands - no, she was in the arms, no, the limbs, no, to be more anatomically correct, the tentacles - an actual alien.
(An angel.)

alright tell all of us your thoughts about kaito :)
I did not forget… I have just been con crunching but now I’m free to become the worse
Minor Zexal and Arc V spoiling ahoy
How I feel about this character:
Oh no you’ve opened a floodgate… welcome to oversharing hour with Jay
I’m very normal about Kaito, just ignore the two full cosplays + the EVA foam Orbital work in progress I have mapped out, the wall scroll that’s at my work computer, my ita pin bag, and the fact that I’ve done everything I can to make his deck competitive viable and god dammit am I still trying please print this deck a god damn banger starter, Konami, I can’t keep doing this without your help-
Short story but I used to be suuuuper YGO Vrains favoring from 2020 into early 2022, but I found myself drifting from it because one can only tolerate so much subtweeting and catty behavior over personal preferences, and I’d never really finished Zexal before, just has a half baked idea how it ends, like I watched a chunk of it when it first aired but never finished and proceeded to forgot most of it, so I picked it back up after deciding to pick up Kaito to write in an RP server with some friends because I remembered liking him and… well I didn’t stand a chance when I got back to him fjdhdhd
I deeply relate to the theme of self-inflicted loneliness because it’s easier to be by yourself, just getting walked out on, left in the dark, or even being shafted for reasons out of my own control, I really get that
Also taking on too much if it means the people you love will be ok even if the ending result is you’re not ok, where he is after his Duel with Yuma at the end of Zexal I and getting to repair all of those relationships he was damaged by is where I want to get to in life
Bonus fact that’s minor spoilers for another spin off, but I’m… not a huge fan of his portrayal in Arc V, I like that he’s there and acknowledge that it’s a different Kaito and I love all Kaito Tenjos as they exist, including the Structures Cosplayer, but… yeah, not a fan, I’m a big fan of showing vs telling and Arc V to me feels like it’s ALL telling for all of its supporting cast most of the time
All the people I ship romantically
The better question is who I don’t honestly because that list is far smaller, but if I had to pick favorites I’m very partial to Ryouga, Mizael, and Edo-
Something about rivals to lovers resonates with my very being, even if Edo is less of a rival and more of an enemy until Arc V does it’s usual-
I’ve written for Challenge and AntiHero both already actually, my docs is 99% Challenge Wips that are slowly coming along tbh, and GalaxyMaster takes more time to write since most of those are… you know what I’m getting at LOL
I stg Gallop's one mission was to make Kaito Tenjo a dating sim protagonist because I have no other excuse for why they gave him so many boyfriends and even girlfriends across Zexal and Arc V, Yugioh’s surprising most eligible bachelor
My non-romantic OTP
nervous laughter
Chris.
I like to think of them more as divorcees who are just fine staying apart
Also gestures vaguely at the first answer
My unpopular opinion
I don’t know if I have many tbh, besides disliking Arc V’s rendition of him / not liking mentor at all lol— Like maybe how I genuinely believe he’s the strongest rival bc his record was the best even after he was put up against forces behind human understand and was even considered dying majority of the time of Zexal while remaining arguably mostly human, Zexal’s wack
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon
Oh my god, the duel I hate the most in all of YGO is Kaito’s duel against Heartland because not letting Kaito win against someone who’s become representative of the garbage he was put through is SO UNSATISFYING
Yuma coming in and finishing it up is symbolic in its own right because of the importance of bonds, but to me that was and always should have been Kaito’s moment, let Yuma and Astral show up literally any other time and I’m fine with it
ALSO WE DON'T GET THE RYOUGA AND KAITO GRUDGE MATCH, though Kaito solos everytime, I’m so sorry Ryouga

Ruka/Luna for the character meme, if you're still doing it?
YESSSS I LOVE LUNA
favorite thing about them: Luna is my top favorite yugioh girl as of right now i love her so much!!!!!! I love her bond with Leo and I love just like...her character concept?? Girl falling into the Monster World via her brain when she was itty bitty and then a giant dragon told her it was her job to save and protect everyone. Luna had Undertale happen to her when she was like 4 and we just have to live with that and she just has to live with that too.
least favorite thing about them: unfortunately, she is a girl in a yugioh series. DOUBLE UNFORTUNATELY she is suffering from Girl In the Back Half of 5D's Disease. like i will go to bat for a lot in s2 of 5ds but MAN. THE GIRLS PROBLEM. luna's concept (the fucking fact she can talk to duel spirits!!!) is so cool and the show does barely anything with it except for that agonizing Monkey Miniarc during the dark signers. sad!!! LET HER DO MORE!!!!
favorite line: I can't think of any lines from the show proper off the top of my head but i Love if you play as leo in duel links and challenge her she says something like "Duel you? No way! You always complain when you lose!!"...i just love their dynamic so much ;__;
brOTP: HER AND LEO OF COURSE i love ygo siblings and leo and luna are my favorite 5ds characters (despite. my madnesses.)...their bond is just so so sweet and i love that you can tell even though leo's so rambunctious and obnoxious sometimes (a lot of the time) she still loves him so much. Also I'm insane and have been lost in the gx/5ds post canon crossover AU that exists in my brain where teenage luna is friends with 40-something year old chazz. one day i will talk more about this. i also have a lot i could say about Aporia and Luna having a dynamic but that would take another 3 paragraphs so I will restrain myself for now. <3
OTP: i dont have one. shes 12.
nOTP: if you ship her with any of her older/adult friends i am going to rip your bones out.
random headcanon: Trans girl, has had an on/off childhood attachment to maybe being a veterinarian when she grows up, collects books of old fairy tales, occasionally has nightmares about leo dying. :( cuz...you know. tbh luna is turning a bit into a ygo girl im just making shit up about but they forgot to give her much so im just filling in the gaps.
unpopular opinion: her and leo aren't annoying and their place on team 5D's is meaningful and sweet!!!!!!!!!
song i associate with them: It's a little bit of a 5D's on the Whole song for me but Daniel in the Den by Bastille has some big luna vibes for me primarily via "and you thought the lions were bad/well they tried to kill my brothers".....thinks about a certain leonine looking guy who did. in fact. try to kill her brother. twice. <:)
favorite picture of them:
sorry it's a group shot but i love whenever the twins hug yusei ;__; hes their fuckign DAD!!!!
#THANK YOUUU I NEVER GET TO TALK MUCH ABOUT LUNA BUT I ABSOLUTELY ADORE HER#AND HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT HER A LOT LATELY#asks#clockfighting#ygo posting
