What Makes LA Awesome?

Ok. So we’ve only been here for 4 weeks. And it’s possible that I’m totally talking out my arse here. But it seems that Los Angeles suffers from a perception problem - in that the majority of people on planet Earth who do not live in Los Angeles can be divided into two camps:

(1)  Those who have never been to LA and think only that it is full of Hollywood magic, a beautifully scenic paradise filled with celebrities, parties, and the prospect of multi-picture development deals with movie studios.

(2)   Those who have been to LA and think that it’s a shithole, full of dilapidated strip malls, traffic jams and a complete lack of culture outside of the movies it trots out.

And then category (1) people will probably visit expecting to be dazzled, and when they inevitably aren’t, they immediately turn into category (2) people.

So... from two total newbies who are really just starting out and could still crash and burn but are so far totally loving this town, here are Megan and Steve’s thoughts on how to truly appreciate LA:

Forget about monuments or historical stuff like in most other cities you’d visit.

Realise that what LA can give you are experiences rather than sights.

Embrace the fact that those experiences will be dotted all over the city and that between point A (you) and point C (your totally fun destination) there will be miles and miles of point B (long straight congested streets of total nothingness, like if Parramatta Road overdosed on Valium).

So, if you’re someone who’s arrived in Los Angeles and already

a) looked at the Hollywood sign for 10 minutes and

b) realised that George Clooney may live in the same city but he sure as shit ain’t hanging out with you while you wander the streets,

here’s a list of some of the awesome and uniquely LA things Meg and I have discovered and done while here.

 1. GOING TO SEE FILM AND TV PANELS

Just because the whole “LA is Hollywood is TV and movies and you’ll be surrounded by it all” is a bit of a myth, doesn’t mean there’s not a bucketload of cool events to check out. In essence – 99% of the people who make all the stuff you love live right here. That means that they don’t need to ‘go on tour’ to share their experiences, they can just nick across town to take part in an informative and entertaining talk about your new favourite show/film/album.

Meg and I got to see a Q&A with director James Wan, director of the original Saw, The Conjuring, and now The Fast & The Furious 7 talk about how they finished the film after the death of Paul Walker and what it actually felt like to try to recover from his passing and rework the film to adequately pay tribute to him.

The very next week, we went to a panel by the creators and writers of Better Call Saul – all of whom had also worked on Breaking Bad – and heard how you create a new and totally distinct show from the ashes of one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Oh, and Michael McKean, who before appearing in Better Call Saul co-created/wrote/starred in a little film called This Is Spinal Tap, also stopped by. And afterwards they were just hanging out in the lobby having a beer and a chat with everyone.

Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Girls, Bridesmaids) turns up at small club shows. Susannah Hoffs from the Bangles sings at a bar 5 minutes away. Jeff freaking Goldblum has started a freaking jazz band and plays every Wednesday night at a freaking pub.

And, just in case you think “yeah yeah Steve that sounds great and all but I’m not interested in nerding out on secret gigs from performers, I just want some COOL AMERICAN SHIT”, I can also assure you that LA has....

2. WORLD’S BIGGEST PANCAKES

The Griddle Café made pancakes that are 12 inches across and 2 inches thick. And put 3 of them on my plate. This is how much was left after I had eaten more than I ever had in my life:

We took them home and got 4 more breakfasts out of them. Filling up 2 of us each time. That’s 9 servings of food. And it was just as tasty on the last bite as the first. And ok there may be people out there who go “ew” or worry about hygiene or think that it’s just too excessive or whatever, but to them I say - NINE SERVINGS. NINE.  Of PANCAKES.

The moral is, you’ve just got to accept that in America you will from time to time get a culinary tsunami – if you think about it being decadent and gross you’ll just get smashed on the reef, so you may as well ride that fucker all the way in to shore.

  3. WORLD’S BIGGEST COCKTAILS

For when you’ve polished off the world’s biggest pancakes.

 4.  THE LA BREA TAR PITS

OK, this is a bit touristy, but nonetheless: did you know that a certain part of Los Angeles, just near all the fashion stores and cafes of West Hollywood, has these naturally occurring tar pits, where liquid asphalt is pooled up and still bubbles away? And that these tar pits have been there for thousands of years and have trapped and kept perfectly preserved fossils of sabre-toothed tigers, mammoths and mastodons.

They even found freaking dire wolves and I thought you could only find them in Game of Thrones.

If Jon Snow had this many, the White Walkers would be well and truly fucked.

  So basically LA is one step away from Jurassic Park. Beat that, “Europe”. With your “museums”.

5. BARS AND RESTAURANTS AND CHEAP WAYS TO GET THERE

It should surprise no one that there are a heap of great places to eat and drink in LA. We’ve checked out a great Mexican/tapas place called Petty Cash, a gritty Hollywood dive bar with a funky house band, a ‘beautiful people’ haunt in West Hollywood that is great for cocktails and people-watching, a bar decked out like the interior of a 1970s aeroplane, and a ribs joint the priorities of which are demonstrated by the slogans in this photo:

But if you have to do one, they’d rather you throw bones in the aisle than eat salad.

We also went to the Dresden for my birthday – a very old-school kitschy jazz bar which was the setting for this scene from the 1996 movie Swingers.

If you saw the film, you might remember the ‘band’ from that scene, this weird singing drummer dude +crazy keyboard lady performing a bizarre version of Staying Alive. Well, their names are Marty and Elayne, and they are still there.

Try to tell me those aren’t the best wigs ever.

  But, I hear you say, how can you go to all these bars when you have to drive everywhere? In the old days I think there may have been a touch of drink driving in ol’ LA. Now, however, the magic of Uber means that you can get to pretty much any spot in town for less than $5. A more thoughtful person may wish to contemplate the threat to the livelihood of cab drivers and/or what it says about the minimum wage when people make extra money in $4 increments by driving people all the way across town at 1 in the morning, but for me, I say GIDDYUP ON THE LA NIGHTLIFE AND THE CHEAP FARE HOME.

  6. THE MAGIC CASTLE.    

It’s an ACTUAL CASTLE.

 For ACTUAL MAGICIANS. 

 Let’s be clear here – this is not a trashy tourist trap with a few magic shows. This is an honest-to-goodness club that you aren’t allowed into unless you are a member or a member’s guest.

And you don’t get to be a member unless you appear before the board of directors and convince them that you’re magic.

Once a year, they hold an open day where the general public is allowed into the hallowed halls – Megan and I went in and wandered from room to room spellbound (*drops mic, walks off stage*).

We weren’t allowed to take any pictures once we moved past the lobby (where you gain entry by saying ‘open sesame’ to a bookshelf which slides open to admit you) but it’s immaculately fitted out the way you’d picture some exclusive millionaires’ country club in the 50s, except that all the paintings on the walls are of people with names like The Great Bambino and Mysterioso Brown.

Megan and I have resolved to learn enough magic to get ourselves a membership so we can get into this place again. Basically, we need to get as good as this:

  6. JUST GETTING OUT THERE AND DOING SHIT

The other night, I was sitting at home when I realised that one of my favourite bands was playing in Los Angeles that night. Because fantastic bands, no matter how famous, are a dime a dozen in LA, it was easy to jump straight online and get tickets. And again, because there is such a neverending supply of great shows all competing for audience, the price was lower than would have been seen in Australia since about 1992. Less than an hour and a half after I decided to see the show, I was at the venue seeing them in the flesh.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s always something to see, something to do, something to try. There’s pricey stuff, cheap stuff, and free stuff. Its familiar yet alien. It’s out of the comfort zone but not in the panic zone. If you’re looking for great art, or monuments, or places of historical importance, or a romantic canal/river/harbour in the middle of town, you’re out of luck. But there is a bucketload to experience and I’m looking forward to experiencing as much as I can.

So - feel free to check back in on me in months to come, and see if my soul has been crushed and I’m all like “boo hoo LA”. But hopefully, I’ll keep surrounding myself with all the weird-arse stuff this city has and will keep loving the hell out of it. Because just like Urban Cookie Collective in 1993, I’VE GOT THE KEY I’VE GOT THE SECRET.
