Yoshimoto Nara, superflat/pop art movement. The Japanese youths revere him. His artworks fetch a high sum at the Sotheby’s and the like. But in Europe, he is quite unknown and some dismiss his works as low art. The way they don’t see manga as an art form. This is his second retrospective in a decade in Europe. Paris was the first. Now his works are in Vienna. From the Albertina Modern: “Nara's figures largely stand isolated, exposed and therefore vulnerable, but at the same time they have an incredible presence. They are out for interaction. The children in Nara's paintings mostly look at us directly, thus making contact with us. They give us an annoyed look, smile at us maliciously, or look up at us with an expression of innocence.”
