THE GRUDGE (2004)
😿Cat dies
This movie tries to capitalize a lot off of kids being scary but its main kid is pretty freaking adorable, so there is that. I thought this film had a better reputation but boy howdy was I wrong. Either way it was not only not scary but also kind of boring. It had some neat things but overall I am not mad, just disappointed.
⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Child Death
So the intro shows us the caretaker Yoko dying but when it comes down to it they just say she didn't show up for work and that's how Sarah Michelle Gellar AKA, Karen gets the job. Wack. I mean they called Yoko but they just moved on to the next meat sack, yikes. Being a working stiff in Tokyo doesn't seem ideal but maybe that is just me and my sympathy for Yoko. (Also it is mentioned later that Karen only is there for the day, but still). Things at the house feel weird almost as soon as Karen arrives (who decided to name her Karen? Anyway). She finds a closet door closed and taped shut but hears a cat inside it so un-tapes and opens it. Inside she finds a journal and AH! A whole child! How did she see the journal first and not the kid? Anyway, Karen is trying to find out where this kid came from so she calls her boss. By the time he gets there she is stunned silent because a ghost or demon or something came and killed her client right before her eyes! Wack!
There is an abrupt cut to the family originally getting the house for the mother/client and the creepy stuff that was happening then. Another abrupt cut to the family moving into the home. You see the madness taking over each family member first the wife, then the husband, then the mother and finally the sister. Back to the present the cops find the bodies of the husband and wife in the attic, and this is not the first murder suicide they have found in this house which is of course suspicious. Turns out there is a Grudge in the home left by a previous awful murder that occurred there. The head detective believes this pretty easily, and the facts match up to make this so. He even informs Karen about this like it is no big deal (it is a pretty big deal).
We see the ghost of Yoko come back and that is cool because she has no jaw, we see Karen trying to avoid a fate that seems very unavoidable, and we see the past play out in front of us. In the end Karen learns the truth about the home but is unable to save her boyfriend/love from succumbing to the power of The Grudge. She attempts to set the house on fire (which is what the police officer attempted to do before he failed) but it is put out by prompt fire personnel. Here is where I call shenanigans, there is no way that she was okay after a house fire with two huge canisters of gasoline. I guess it doesn’t matter anyway because the curse of The Grudge got her in the end (since the house was never actually burned down). But still, I had to point out how silly it was that she was so gorgeous and unscorched at the end.

What I read in September 2024
Love this series so much!!!!
Such a disappointment
very silly nostalgic read, got it in a @shiftythrifting book box XD
How is this story so good!!!!
A very slow, kinda philosophical, kinda slice of life, kida biology textbook on snails ^_^
Loved that Touya didn't take a specific side when he reaches the one kingdom, just tries to prevent any further killing.
Really sweet slice-of-life manga
Cute-reread, could have been a bit longer to fully flesh-out the message. But over all cute.
Another cute slice-of-life
Preparing for the agony...
a fairly good sequel Arden can be yeeted into the sun.
I love this series every time I reread it.
Not a bad overview
He's in her clutches!
I didn't know much going into this and there was a lot more murder than anticipated XD
