Unraveling the Truth: Common Yoga Myths Busted
Yoga is one of the most transformative practices in the world, offering a wide range of benefits for the body, mind, and spirit. However, despite its growing popularity, many yoga myths and misconceptions about yoga still persist, causing confusion and preventing many people from fully experiencing its advantages. From the idea that you need to be super flexible to practice yoga, to the belief that yoga is only for women, these common yoga myths can cloud the true essence of yoga. In this blog, we will explore some of the most popular yoga misconceptions and clear up the confusion by revealing the yoga truths you need to know.
Tumblr media
1. You Need to Be Flexible to Practice Yoga
One of the biggest misunderstandings in yoga is the belief that you have to be flexible to practice yoga. This yoga myth can discourage beginners from starting their practice, especially if they feel like they aren’t “flexible enough.” The truth is, yoga is for everyone, no matter how flexible (or inflexible) you are. Flexibility comes with consistent practice. In fact, yoga is a great way to improve flexibility over time. The goal of yoga isn’t to achieve perfect poses, but to cultivate body awareness and mind-body connection. So, if you’re not flexible yet, don’t worry—yoga can help you get there!
2. Yoga Is Only for Women
Another widespread misconception about yoga is that it’s a practice primarily for women. While it’s true that many women practice yoga, this yoga myth overlooks its long history of male practitioners. Yoga was founded in ancient India, and many of the original yogis were men. In fact, yoga has a long-standing tradition in which both men and women practice together. Today, many men find yoga especially beneficial for improving flexibility, relieving stress, and building strength. So, whether you’re male or female, yoga is for anyone who wants to experience its numerous benefits.
3. Yoga Is Just About Stretching
Many people believe that yoga is simply about stretching, but this common misunderstanding about yoga only tells part of the story. While yoga does involve stretching, it’s so much more than that. Yoga combines physical postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), meditation, and mindfulness to create a balanced practice that benefits the entire body and mind. The physical practice of yoga helps improve strength, flexibility, and balance, but the true benefits also lie in its ability to calm the mind and reduce stress. So, while stretching is an important aspect, yoga is a holistic approach to health.
4. Yoga Is a Quick Fix for Stress
Yoga is often praised for its ability to reduce stress, but expecting it to be a quick fix is a yoga myth that can lead to disappointment. While yoga can certainly help relieve stress in the short term, its true benefits unfold through consistent practice. By regularly incorporating yoga into your routine, you’ll build mental and emotional resilience, allowing you to manage stress more effectively in the long run. The relaxation you experience after a single class is wonderful, but the full stress-relieving benefits come from making yoga a part of your lifestyle.
5. Yoga Is Only for Young People
Another common misunderstanding in yoga is that yoga is a practice only for younger individuals. This yoga myth could not be further from the truth. Yoga is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. In fact, yoga can be particularly beneficial as we age, helping to maintain flexibility, balance, and strength. Many seniors practice yoga to improve mobility, reduce pain, and prevent falls. Yoga offers a gentle, yet effective way to stay active and healthy at any age. So, if you’re older, don’t let age stop you—yoga can benefit you at any stage of life.
6. You Need Special Equipment to Practice Yoga
Some people assume that practicing yoga requires fancy mats, blocks, straps, and expensive clothing. This yoga myth is simply not true. While props can enhance your practice, they’re not necessary to start. All you need is a comfortable space and a willingness to begin. A simple mat (or even a soft surface like carpet) is enough to get started. As for clothing, wear something that allows you to move freely—no need for expensive gear. The beauty of yoga is that it doesn’t require any special equipment or clothing; it’s about connecting with your body and mind, not your possessions.
7. Yoga Is Only About Poses
One of the most common misunderstandings in yoga is that it’s all about mastering physical poses. While the physical postures are a central part of yoga, they are just one aspect of the practice. Yoga also includes breathwork (pranayama), meditation, and mindfulness—all of which contribute to the overall experience. These elements are just as important as the physical poses in helping you build mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. Yoga is a full mind-body practice, not just a series of poses. By focusing on all aspects, you’ll experience its true depth.
8. Yoga Is a Religious Practice
Many people mistakenly believe that yoga is a religious practice, but this is another yoga myth that often creates hesitation. While yoga has roots in ancient spiritual traditions, it is not tied to any specific religion. Yoga is a spiritual practice in the sense that it encourages self-awareness, mindfulness, and personal growth, but it is not affiliated with any particular religious beliefs. Yoga can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their faith or spiritual background. Its universal principles of peace, self-awareness, and balance transcend religious boundaries.
9. Yoga Is Easy and Doesn’t Require Effort
There’s a common misconception about yoga that it’s an easy practice that requires no effort. In reality, yoga can be physically demanding, depending on the style you practice. Some types of yoga, such as Power Yoga or Vinyasa, offer a vigorous workout that challenges your strength, stamina, and balance. Even more gentle practices, like Hatha or Iyengar, require focus and effort to maintain proper alignment and technique. Yoga is about challenging yourself in a mindful way, pushing your limits while respecting your body. It’s not about easy poses; it’s about progress and self-awareness.
10. Yoga Is a Solo Activity
While yoga can be practiced alone, it doesn’t have to be a solitary experience. Many people enjoy practicing yoga in group settings, whether in a studio, at a retreat, or in online communities. Sharing the practice with others can enhance the experience, provide support, and foster a sense of connection. Yoga classes offer an opportunity for camaraderie and guidance, making the journey more enjoyable and meaningful. So, whether you practice alone or with others, yoga is a practice that can be shared and celebrated.
Conclusion
Yoga is a powerful, transformative practice, but many common yoga myths and misconceptions about yoga continue to confuse those who are new to it. By debunking yoga myths and embracing the true essence of the practice, you can unlock its full potential. Yoga is for everyone, regardless of age, gender, flexibility, or experience. It’s not about perfect poses or achieving instant results—it’s about cultivating awareness, balance, and peace in both the body and the mind. Let go of the myths, embrace the truths, and begin your journey toward a healthier, more fulfilling life with yoga.

THE SHOWER PORN AND A FEW FICTITIOUS MYTHS…
Recently again, I have come across the fictitious myth that Alba posted her shower porn to deflect from her racist and antisemitic stuff that was uncovered by (more likely leaked to) Chris’ fandom a few days earlier.
But I would argue that this explanation for her posting herself stripping in the shower has little to no credibility. I will explain why, share my theory about what likely went down and the clues that point to it. I will also use this opportunity to debunk a few myths that have plagued this fandom for a very long time…
Usual disclaimer: I have no insider knowledge and have 0 contact familiar with this shitshow and the protagonists.
Her posting a shower porn was likely an act of retaliation to embarrass Chris…
When someone posts their nudes online, it can be either accidental or purposeful. If the posting is purposeful, it cannot be about deflecting from an existing PR crisis for the sole reason that the distraction would only work temporarily. The thing you are trying to deflect from would come back and bite you (on the butt) very quickly AND you would have added a sex scandal to the mix. Not the greatest move. Especially when you are a woman. Men tend to go unscathed or even end up benefitting from such scandals, but it’s rarely the case for women because… double standards and misogyny, you know?
So the reason someone would post their nudes, a sex tape or in this instance a shower porn is to find elsewhere. It is most likely to get attention. The question is: what kind of attention and from whom?
I suspect it was actually Chris’ side that leaked the receipts showing her to associate with racist/antisemitic people in what turned out to be a successful effort to silence her. The reason his team likely tried to keep her quiet is probably because she had made a couple of very costly mistakes prior to that.
What made Chris’ team want to silence her and get her under control…
Her first mistake was to post the now debunked fake yoga certificate so that she could place herself in Atlanta with Chris. It probably forced his team into damage control mode, as they had to get assistance from a yoga studio based in Atlanta and a couple of its members that helped corroborate Alba’s claims. But her most aggravating mistake was posting her mother’s age on Instagram, very shortly after people commented on the fact that Chris was closer in age to Alba’s mom than to Alba herself. It was a catastrophic move on her part because, it showed she and his team were lurking on SM, it showed how thin-skinned and rash she is and worse it drew more attention to the age difference and terrible optics of this “relationship”.
Leaking her problematic stuff likely served as a warning shot to behave and stay quiet or else she would be destroyed. And that’s probably why she posted that shower porn, to embarrass Chris and get a semblance of revenge. I believe she felt safe doing that anyway because a marriage was already in the pipeline.
But notice that she has kept quiet since then. You can compare her SM activity before that event and after she came back to Insta, and it differs greatly. And of course, her problematic stuff never reached the general public.
Do people remember the GQ event in Portugal where she refused to talk to the media and was said to be rude? It was most likely because that poor Nazi troll wasn’t allowed to speak. Her only job was to flash “her” ring in order to honor one of their sponsors and that was it.
But she did manage to post a video of the rings with her soulmate Justin to try and embarrass Chris once more.
Why a talent agency would seemingly work against its client’s best interests…
Of course, some people might think this theory has little credibility because leaking her problematic stuff doesn’t reflect on Chris well. But I believe that not only did the talent agency not mind this little problem, but they actually welcomed it. First of all, they made sure her problematic stuff never reached the general public, as this information was only destined to his fandom. But more importantly, why not charge more hours to your client to manage a crisis you have created yourself? That’s actually quite the smart savvy business model and that’s “capitalism” for you.
It might be too cynical for some but we are talking about a company that allegedly dabbled in sex trafficking by providing actresses to a famous disgraced producer so that he could sexually assault them. They then allegedly helped cover the scandal by helping him destroy the lives of the women who dared speak up. So this shitshow, that would be kids’ stuff for them, wouldn’t it?
Of course, such tactics have helped decrease Chris’ market value or help accelerate it but as you have noticed, all of his upcoming projects (excluding Red One) are CAA-backed, so they basically get him for cheaper. And Marvel is likely the only place where he can still get huge paychecks these days but they will get a big chunk of that anyway so basically it is a win-win situation for the talent agency.
Of course, it’s difficult to know what is happening behind the scenes and it’s just speculation on my part but I suspect they no longer have much faith in Chris’ career and future. A few critically panned projects and commercial flops may have helped reinforce their strategy and it seems like that they are trying to squeeze as much money out of Chris as quickly as they can.
The legend that Chris’ fandom is like the FBI is a great cover story…
Rumors are that the fandom uncovered Alba’s past and exposed her, like they have uncovered so much of Chris’ business over the years. But I suspect this is a lie. A very practical lie by the way.
Because the legend that Chris’ fandom possesses the most amazing investigative skills has served two purposes. First of all, it has enabled the fandom to feel good about themselves as they could pat themselves on the back for being such great detectives. And yes, I would argue, it was a good thing to try to make a loyal fanbase feel good about themselves, especially when they are so easily and so often thrown under the bus. But more importantly, this legend has been used to cover the fact that this fandom has been infiltrated for years and has been fed information directly from his team. On this platform (which sponsored his NY con) and other SM platform. I have discussed it previously and have used many examples to illustrate that.
Like a Team Real blog having a picture of Chris’ dog at the daycare center. Like a blog which made a (non)sensical U-turn from Team PR to Team Real (a very practical trajectory that I explained in a previous post) who allegedly recognized a hotel room in Finland or in… Lisbon!
Let’s talk for a second about the video Chris did in his hotel room in Lisbon for that teacher. Isn’t it amazing how quickly people found out where Chris had shot this video? Isn’t it tragic how that poor teacher allegedly had to quit her job because Chris’ crazy stalker fans harassed her?
People would be smart to question the veracity of this story as it is likely totally fictional. It did serve at least 2 purposes. First, it helped reinforce the crazy fan narrative that has been shoved down our throats for years and more importantly it helped place Chris in Portugal, which was the whole point of this little video. His team leaked where Chris was (something they have done very often) to breadcrumb his relationship to Alba, so that his fans could connect the dots. Do people remember the first articles that came out after Chris and Alba became official? They all put so much emphasis on the fact that his fans figured it all out and put 2 and 2 together when Chris and Alba were trying so hard to be private. Because private people always breadcrumb their relationship on Social Media, don't they?
Tumblr media
But it was nothing new for Chris as he was flirting very ostentatiously and so privately with Jenny on Twitter back in the day...

Excerpt from this essay from Sierra Club:
I’ve spent years encouraging people to ditch single-use plastic. Probably the most egregious example of single-use plastic is bottled water: The bottles are made from fossil fuels, the water filling them is often taken from communities and ecosystems that need it, and the pollution created when they’re disposed of will outlast all of us.
So when I heard that people were getting excited about the Stanley cup—a durable, reusable alternative to bottled water—at first it seemed like a victory. Stanley drinkware has been around for decades, mostly marketed as a rugged brand for workmen and outdoorsmen. But recently the company repackaged its signature products in a rainbow of colors and began marketing to women, positioning itself as a lifestyle brand for people headed to the carpool line or yoga class. Stanley’s collaborations with influencers sparked a storm of social media buzz, with people rushing to snatch up the latest limited edition and amassing collections of the colorful tumblers. The excitement over the Stanley cup grew into a fad—and that fad has become costly for the planet.
Unfortunately, Stanley cups are far from the only eco-conscious product to get corrupted by consumerism. Earth Day is just around the corner, and my inbox is currently filling up with Earth Day promotions from nearly every company that’s gotten ahold of my email address.
A few months ago, I bought a new pair of organic cotton pants from a company that uses minimal packaging and donates to conservation. I loved the fit and felt good about my purchase. But now that it’s almost Earth Day, this eco-conscious company is trying to make me believe that the only way to help the planet is to buy another pair of pants. By commercializing Earth Day, we’ve missed the point.
It's like this every year. Earth Day has become another “Hallmark holiday” marked by special sales and promotions, just another excuse to get people to spend money on things they don’t really need. Somehow, it’s even become an opportunity to shower kids with gifts. An HGTV article published last year promotes “20 Buys to Help Kids Celebrate Earth Day Every Day.” The gift suggestions range from wooden toys and organic cotton tees to kid-sized gardening tools and animal-adorned dinnerware made from bamboo.
Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a junior gardening kit or bamboo dinnerware. In fact, many of the ideas on these lists are better-than-average products in terms of environmental impact. Anything that gets kids interacting with the environment is better than cheap, plastic indoor toys; if you’re in the market for durable plates your kids can’t break, looking for sustainable materials is a good call. The problem is that we’re being sold a myth that shopping is the solution to our environmental crises.
The first Earth Day was a call to action against rampant air and water pollution. Twenty million people took part in demonstrations across the United States, and the movement led to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and some of our country’s strongest environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. There were rallies and teach-ins around the country. People talked about the connections between environmental health and poverty, population pressure and pesticides. There were gardening workshops and automobile burials. It was a political, radical, and joyous event. No one went home with a swag bag full of face creams in recyclable jars and bamboo plates for the kids.
Earth Day has been watered down from a revolutionary moment that recognized shared values and the common threat of environmental harm to a day that’s little more than a social media hashtag like National Siblings Day or National Ice Cream Day. No amount of sustainable Earth Day purchases can buy our way out of the climate crisis or protect endangered species from extinction.
When environmental action is defined by the types of products we buy, we’ve really lost the plot.

Robert Fraser reviews Tantra Exhibition, 1971 (transcription)
Robert Fraser’s review of The Hayward Gallery’s Tantra exhibition, September 30-Nov. 7, 1971. Published in Studio International, vol. 182 no. 939, Dec. 1971

The exhibition of Tantra on show at the Hayward Gallery from 30 September to 14 November has been an event which could be a catalyst to the formation of new conceptions as to the purpose and direction of the art of the future. In this instance I mean art taken as a global entity, not as something divided up into Western art or Eastern art. The first thing that might strike the view was that the show taken as a whole revealed a vision of a very ancient and systematic culture whose symbols and myths are alive right up to the present day; a Hindu or Buddhist could walk through the show and constantly be made aware of things which are a part of his own consciousness and personality. It is this aspect of tantra as a living sign-language and a living mythology which gives it special significance to us now. The basis of all tantric iconography is function; although tantra is based in the expansion of consciousness (Sanskrit root TAN expand TRA) its purpose is to provide and explain methods by which the expansion is to be achieved. There have been many different schools of thought on this subject and the reason for the seemingly baffling complexity of tantra is that it touches upon so many different levels and approaches to sadhana; philosophy, science and ritual are all involved in what was originally one system of thought based in vedanta. In recent centuries cults have grown up which have advocated specialized approaches, of which tantra asana is one; it is this one approach that has in the present day been identified most closely with tantra, and its over-emphasis has given tantra a notoriety which is based upon misconception of its full range. Nevertheless in this show all this enormous variety of imagery and symbol has been brought together under the umbrella of tantra art, as being visualizations of various methods towards the pursuit of sadhana and man's relation to the universe.
In style and content these exhibits differ widely. Many of them are what are known as Indian classical art, others are 'folk' or primitive forms; on the other hand the diagrams and manuscripts of which there are many in the exhibition could be called 'yoga' art. However, nearly all bear a certain stamp or aura which we immediately recognize as tantric; and the reason we are able to do this is due entirely to the vision of one man, Ajit Mookerjee, from whose private collection about two-thirds of the exhibits have been borrowed. Ajit Mookerjee is already well known in India for his pioneer work in the classification and identification of Indian folk and primitive art and it is during the pursuit of these studies that he came to formulate the concept of tantra art, which had hitherto existed as unrelated art-forms in various parts of India. His name is now well known in Western countries as the author of two art books, "Tantra Art' (Ravi Kumar 1967) and 'Tantra Asana' (Ravi Kumar1971), and it is the wide circulation and enormous interest which the first of these books created which made the world aware of an art form which, although it had existed for centuries, had so far eluded classification. What caused this enormous interest, both in the books and the Hayward exhibition, is the fact that tantra art fulfills a function for Western man which his own contemporary art has lost sight of. Here is an art form which partakes of the potential of human energy and its relation to the universe. It is this inward direction of tantra art that people instinctively recognize and identify with, although after experiencing an initial attraction they can easily be put off by what seems to be an impenetrable jungle of symbols and myths demanding a knowledge so specialized as to be beyond reach. But many of these symbols have an abstract significance which is immediately recognizable. An example of this is catalogue no. 511, which illustrates in a series of gouaches of incredibly subtle coloration the processes of projective evolution of the universe; the balance between abstraction and description is so perfectly held on the aesthetic plane that the subject matter of expansion is self-evident.
Despite the organizers' inspired concept of presenting the exhibition as a journey without beginning or end and the sensitive groupings of the various classifications of objects and paintings, one is nevertheless conscious of a certain visual indigestion after concentrated viewing. This is perhaps due to the inclusion of the sections of Buddhist tantra and several series of Tibetan thanjkas, some of which are of indifferent quality. Tibetan Buddhist imagery has a very different visual aura which conjures up a totally different world of the imagination from its Hindu counterparts: it cries out for a setting of its own and should in all fairness be the subject of a separate exhibition.
A word must be said about the catalogue, which has been written by Philip Rawson and admirably designed by Hugh Shaw. Every item in the exhibition has been illustrated and informatively captioned; it is therefore a compendium of tantric imagery in itself, and immediately becomes a vital work of reference. Surely, though, the insistence of the catalogue's introduction upon the cultist aspect of tantra is a mistake? Tantra asana is one of the visually richest and most beautiful sources of tantric imagery but the philosophy of the male/female principle goes far beyond the sexual frame of reference. In advaita vedanta it has a much more abstract significance and the practical application of sexual asana as a means of union with the absolute has no serious philosophical basis. If the idea of tantra art can be freed from its cultist associations, it can emerge as the key to an art of the future that is not pursued for its own sake, but forms part of a philosophical system or thought.
All this is conjecture, but it is exciting to hear that a Tantra Museum is to be built on a site on the outskirts of New Delhi over the next few years which will collect and exhibit both Indian tantric forms and forms from other cultures ancient and contemporary, with Ajit Mookerjee's collection as a basis. It is by this approach to tantra art that a link may be established between all forms of art with an inward direction that speak of man's relation to the universe.
****
Interesting that Fraser was based in India at this time but familiar enough with a London show to be able to write a detailed review.
Vyner says: "Characteristically, though, his reappearances in London during the four or five years he was away shed little light on his actions and whereabouts other than conveying his increased enthusiasm for all things Indian."

9-1-1: In which I started digging around and now there's a big ol' hole in my yard and I'm not sure what it means.
I really do go back and forth about whether 9-1-1 will ever have Buck and Eddie become something more for each other. Don't get me wrong: they absolutely should. But I fluctuate on whether it will actually happen. Sometimes it seems inevitable. Other times I think it's a procedural and I'm not sure the higher ups have the guts or the inclination.
So, for the purposes of the following essay, let's presume in good faith: let's say they are laying the groundwork deliberately and let's say the producers are on board and there's a plan in place. And let's look at the season 6 finale, because I've realised two things.
One: season finale is not series finale.
It did kind of feel like maybe the showrunners were concerned that the show was getting cancelled, and were looking to wrap things up as neatly as possible. Or maybe that's not fair - maybe that's something we (or maybe just me) the audience put on things. But just because Eddie is dating Marisol doesn't mean he's marrying Marisol. In FACT, given all the revelations that he's never actually dated, maybe it's more likely that he's just going to ... date.
At this point, I'd like to point you all towards this incredibly thoughtful post by @andavs about Eddie's characterisation of someone with PTSD, because it is incredibly well written and interesting and kind of astonishing - whether there was this much work put into his character by the writers and the actor, or whether both of those groups took the character outline and, simply by moving intelligently in that direction, landed on something true.
In light of that, I can see Eddie's decision to date Marisol as one he makes, at long last, for himself and himself alone. He is going to allow himself to date for himself.
And Buck ... is with Natalia, and that's ... something. Yes, the implications of the finale for the couch theory that the show itself created and acknowledged is ... disappointing. BUT.
If you're still here ... I mentioned I'd realised two things.
In the final moments of the finale, what song is playing?
This show is never subtle when it comes to music, which is part of the hammy fun of it. Season finale final songs, though:
In season 1 "Shake It Out" by Florence + the Machine was underscoring Bobby and Athena starting to date again.
(Season 2 doesn't help this, so I'm skipping it)
In season 3 Yaz's "Only You" is probably most geared towards Maddie and Chim expecting a baby, but it's also Athena healing surrounded by her family.
Season 4, after the sniper attack, Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper" is about rising up out of trauma, but most of the lyrics are about the work necessary to get there - the singer is not standing tall right now, but they will. Which is optimistic for Eddie and Maddie, but of course healing is not linear.
Season 5's "Closer to Fine" by the Indigo Girls is SUCH a good song, and it's celebrating feeling better, but it's as much about the dark things the singer waded through to get here - Eddie is back with the 118 but it's been a hard slog to get there. Buck breaks up with Taylor and moves towards something more optimistic, knowing what he wants a little more. But mostly Eddie is back. YAY!
Now. NOW. Season 6 ends with Buck and Natalia, and Eddie dating Marisol, and the rest of them doing other things, while they do yoga on the roof and it's magic hour and it's tempting to think of it as a "happy ending". But the song playing is "Myth" by Beach House. And the lyrics to that song are interesting.
Consider:
Can’t keep hanging on To all that’s dead and gone If you build yourself a myth Know just what to give What comes after this momentary bliss?
So the yoga moment on the roof is a good one, and everyone is content, but ... what about the next moment? Is this a cautionary tale about the way we try to make our lives fit a certain narrative and -- importantly -- what that costs? Is Buck, who has spent the season focused on Becoming, on being At Ease, finally finding that ease, or is he creating a myth of one? And what might that cost? Is Eddie, who seems like he's finally putting himself first in some ways, starting to build a life in the shape he wants?
The chorus is: "Help me to name it".
To be honest, I'm not sure if I've landed on anything definitive or even significant. But here we are. And it's very possible I've convinced myself this is a thing so that I can maintain the hope for Buck and Eddie becoming BuckandEddie, but, well. I guess I'm interested.
What do you think: is this anything? Do I fill this hole with water and make a swimming pool or just fill it back in? Is this metaphor really, really stupid?

Pregnancy Myths & Truths: Science-Based Insights
Pregnancy myths and truths often cause confusion and misconceptions. One common myth is that you should eat for two, when in fact, only a slight increase in calories is needed. Another myth is that carrying high means a girl, but the position of the baby is unrelated to gender. Truths include the fact that exercise during pregnancy is generally safe, and morning sickness usually subsides after the first trimester. It's important to separate pregnancy myths and truths by relying on medical advice to ensure a healthy and informed pregnancy experience. Always consult a healthcare provider for accurate information.

Pregnancy Myths & Truths
Pregnancy is a time of immense physical and emotional changes, often accompanied by a flood of advice—some helpful, some outdated, and some downright false. Let’s explore common pregnancy myths and separate them from evidence-based truths.
1. Myth: "You Should Eat for Two"
Truth: Quality matters more than quantity.
While calorie needs increase slightly (about 300-500 extra calories per day in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters), overeating can lead to excessive weight gain, gestational diabetes, and complications.
Focus on nutrient-dense foods (protein, iron, folate, calcium) rather than doubling portions.
Science Says: The Institute of Medicine recommends a weight gain of:
25-35 lbs (normal BMI)
15-25 lbs (overweight BMI)
11-20 lbs (obese BMI)
2. Myth: "Avoid All Exercise During Pregnancy"
Truth: Moderate exercise is beneficial.
Unless advised otherwise by a doctor, 30 minutes of daily moderate exercise (walking, swimming, prenatal yoga) is safe and helps reduce risks of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and excessive weight gain.
Avoid high-impact sports, contact activities, or exercises with a fall risk.
Science Says: ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) confirms that exercise improves pregnancy outcomes.
3. Myth: "Heartburn Means Your Baby Will Have a Lot of Hair"
Truth: Heartburn is due to hormonal and physical changes, not hair.
Progesterone relaxes the esophageal sphincter, allowing acid reflux.
The uterus also pushes on the stomach as it grows.
A 2016 study found a weak correlation between severe heartburn and baby hair, but it’s not a reliable predictor.
4. Myth: "You Can’t Drink Any Coffee"
Truth: Moderate caffeine intake is safe.
Up to 200 mg/day (about one 12-oz cup of coffee) is considered safe.
Excessive caffeine (>300 mg/day) may increase miscarriage risk.
Science Says: Studies show moderate caffeine does not significantly increase pregnancy risks.
Tumblr media
5. Myth: "Avoid All Seafood"
Truth: Some fish is beneficial, while some should be avoided.
Eat: Low-mercury fish like salmon, sardines, and shrimp (rich in omega-3s for baby’s brain development).
Avoid: High-mercury fish (shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish).
Science Says: The FDA recommends 8-12 oz of low-mercury fish per week.
6. Myth: "The Shape of Your Belly Predicts the Baby’s Sex"
Truth: Belly shape depends on muscle tone, uterus position, and baby’s position—not gender.
High vs. low belly: Depends on abdominal muscles and baby’s position.
Only reliable gender predictors: Ultrasound or genetic testing.
Tumblr media
7. Myth: "You Should Avoid All Medications"
Truth: Some medications are safe, while others are risky.
Safe (with doctor approval): Acetaminophen (Tylenol), most antacids, certain antibiotics.
Avoid: NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin), some antidepressants, and retinoids.
Science Says: Always consult a doctor—untreated infections or pain can be riskier than medication.
8. Myth: "Pregnant Women Shouldn’t Get Vaccinated"
Truth: Some vaccines are crucial for protection.
Recommended: Flu shot, Tdap (whooping cough booster), COVID-19 vaccine.
Avoid: Live vaccines (MMR, varicella) unless postpartum.
Science Says: Vaccines protect both mother and baby from life-threatening infections.
9. Myth: "Morning Sickness Only Happens in the Morning"
Truth: Nausea can strike anytime (or all day).
Caused by hCG hormone surges and heightened smell sensitivity.
Severe cases (hyperemesis gravidarum) need medical attention.
Science Says: About 70-80% of pregnant women experience nausea, peaking around weeks 6-12.
Final Takeaways:
✅ Listen to doctors, not old wives’ tales. ✅ Every pregnancy is different—what works for one may not for another. ✅ Evidence-based care leads to healthier outcomes.
A physician's note for pregnancy provides medical documentation confirming a woman's pregnancy and may include recommendations for work modifications or bed rest. It's often required for maternity leave or health-related accommodations.

Stronger Joints, Better Life: Advanced Orthopedic Solutions for All Ages
Joint health is fundamental to leading an active and fulfilling life. Across all age groups, people encounter orthopedic challenges—from poor posture and everyday wear to chronic joint conditions. By understanding key factors that affect joint health, individuals can make better choices and seek timely care. Here’s a closer look at the essential elements of orthopedic well-being, with insights from Dr. Mukesh Shanker, widely regarded as the Best Orthopedic Doctor in Noida.
1. Everyday Habits That Harm Your Joints
Tumblr media
Seemingly harmless habits can negatively impact joint health over time. Sitting for long periods, slouching, improper lifting, or wearing unsupportive shoes can strain the joints. Even activities like excessive phone use with bent wrists or poor sleeping positions can lead to chronic joint discomfort. Identifying and modifying these habits early is crucial for long-term joint preservation.
2. How Aging Affects Bone Strength
Tumblr media
As we grow older, bones naturally lose density, increasing the risk of fractures and joint degeneration. Aging also reduces cartilage, leading to stiffness and discomfort in commonly used joints like the knees, hips, and spine. Conditions such as osteoarthritis are more prevalent in older adults but can be managed with early orthopedic intervention. Dr. Mukesh Shanker emphasizes that timely treatment, tailored exercise, and nutritional guidance are essential for maintaining mobility in later years.
3. Myths About Joint Pain
Tumblr media
Several misconceptions can delay appropriate treatment:
Myth: Only older people get joint pain.
Fact: Joint pain can affect anyone due to injury or inflammation.
Myth: Cracking knuckles causes arthritis.
Fact: No clinical link exists between knuckle cracking and arthritis.
According to Dr. Mukesh Shanker, understanding the truth about joint pain encourages patients to take action sooner and receive the care they need.
4. The Link Between Nutrition and Bone Health
Tumblr media
Nutrition directly influences bone and joint strength. Essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and protein help build and maintain bone density. Include:
Leafy greens
Dairy or plant-based calcium sources
Nuts, seeds, and fish rich in omega-3
A balanced diet can reduce inflammation and improve joint function. Dr. Mukesh Shanker recommends consulting with a specialist to develop a nutrition plan tailored to orthopedic needs.
5. How to Improve Posture for Joint Support
Tumblr media
Proper posture reduces strain on joints and supports spinal alignment. Key tips include:
Sit with feet flat and back straight
Use ergonomic chairs and workstations
Engage core muscles to stabilize the spine
Dr. Mukesh Shanker advises incorporating posture-correcting exercises into daily routines to reduce tension in the neck, back, and knees.
6. Impact of Obesity on Orthopedic Health
Tumblr media
Excess weight puts tremendous stress on weight-bearing joints, particularly knees and hips. Obesity not only increases mechanical strain but also promotes inflammation, worsening joint damage. Managing weight through a balanced lifestyle improves mobility and reduces orthopedic risks. Dr. Mukesh Shanker, the Best Orthopedic Doctor in Noida, highlights that even modest weight loss can significantly reduce joint discomfort.
7. Exercises That Strengthen Bones and Joints
Tumblr media
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to protect joint health. Recommended exercises include:
Low-impact cardio (walking, swimming)
Strength training
Flexibility routines like yoga or stretching
These exercises enhance blood flow, strengthen muscles around the joints, and maintain flexibility. Dr. Mukesh Shanker helps patients build safe, customized exercise plans based on their orthopedic condition and age.
8. Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
If you experience persistent joint pain, swelling, limited range of motion, or warmth in a joint, it’s time to see a specialist. Other warning signs include:
Morning stiffness lasting over 30 minutes
Clicking or grinding sensations
Sudden weakness or instability
Dr. Mukesh Shanker emphasizes that early diagnosis improves long-term outcomes and helps avoid surgery when possible.
9. How Weather Affects Joint Pain
Tumblr media
Changes in weather, especially cold and damp conditions, can intensify joint discomfort. While the exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, reduced atmospheric pressure may affect joint fluid and tissue. To ease weather-related joint pain:
Stay warm and active
Use heat therapy when needed
Stretch regularly to reduce stiffness
Dr. Mukesh Shanker suggests maintaining a consistent daily routine and monitoring symptoms to adjust care accordingly.
10. Questions to Ask Your Orthopedic Doctor
Being informed helps you take control of your health. During your orthopedic visit, consider asking:
What’s causing my joint pain?
What are my treatment options—surgical and non-surgical?
What lifestyle changes will help recovery?
Which exercises are safe for me?
Are there risks of long-term joint damage?
Patients working with Dr. Mukesh Shanker receive detailed answers and a patient-focused care plan that balances mobility, comfort, and prevention.
Conclusion
Orthopedic health affects every aspect of mobility and independence. Whether you're dealing with early signs of discomfort or managing long-term orthopedic conditions, knowledge and expert care make all the difference. By making small changes in daily habits, maintaining proper posture, eating well, and staying active, you can protect your joints at any age.
If you're experiencing joint-related concerns, consulting Dr. Mukesh Shanker, the Best Orthopedic Doctor in Noida, ensures timely diagnosis, personalized treatment, and long-term joint care designed to help you move better and live stronger—every day.

Do Genetics Really Predict Your Risk for Heart Disease? Busting the Myths
Heart disease remains one of the leading health concerns across the globe. A common belief is that if your parents or grandparents had heart problems, you're bound to follow the same path. But is that really true? While genetics do play a role in heart health, they are only one part of the equation. In reality, your lifestyle, habits, and environment may have a greater influence. So, if you’ve ever wondered whether your family history dooms you to heart disease, let’s break down the facts and myths—with insights on when to consult a cardiology doctor in Bhubaneswar.
How Do Genetics Affect Heart Disease?
Our genes carry the blueprint for how our bodies function, including our cardiovascular system. Some individuals inherit genetic variations that increase their risk for conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or arrhythmias—all of which can contribute to heart disease.
However, genetics alone are not destiny. For example, even if both your parents had high cholesterol, that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to develop heart problems. What matters more is how you live. Eating right, exercising regularly, and consulting a trusted cardiology doctor in Bhubaneswar for routine checkups can help you manage risks and maintain a healthy heart.
Common Myths About Genetics and Heart Disease
Myth 1: If Heart Disease Runs in My Family, I Can’t Prevent It Truth: While genetics may raise your risk, adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce it. Exercise, nutrition, stress management, and regular medical check-ups make a huge impact.
Myth 2: Heart Disease Only Affects the Elderly Truth: Poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and chronic stress can start harming your heart early in life. It’s never too early to prioritize prevention. A proactive visit to a cardiology doctor in Bhubaneswar can give you a clear picture of your heart health.
Myth 3: No Family History Means No Risk Truth: Even without a family history, lifestyle choices like smoking, poor diet, and inactivity can put your heart at risk. Genetics is just one factor—your habits matter more.
What You Can Do to Lower Your Risk
Even with a genetic predisposition, you’re not powerless. Here’s how to take control:
Follow a heart-healthy diet: Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit processed foods and sugary snacks.
Stay active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. Walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling are all effective options.
Manage stress: Techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can reduce stress, which is a known contributor to heart disease.
Visit a cardiology doctor in Bhubaneswar: Routine screenings and heart assessments can detect potential issues early, allowing for timely intervention.
Quit smoking and reduce alcohol: Both habits increase cardiovascular risks. Quitting can dramatically improve your overall health.
Final Thoughts
Your genes may give you a starting point, but your lifestyle determines the outcome. Heart disease is not a guaranteed result of your DNA. With conscious, consistent choices, you can protect your heart and lead a long, healthy life.If you’re concerned about your heart health, don’t wait. Speak with a qualified cardiology doctor in Bhubaneswar to assess your risks and take proactive steps. Remember—prevention and early action are your best allies in the fight against heart disease.

Can Piles Heal on Their Own? Myths vs. Facts
Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While some cases are mild and resolve on their own, others may require medical attention. There are many misconceptions surrounding piles, leading to confusion about whether they can heal without treatment. Let’s separate myths from facts to better understand piles and their treatment.
Tumblr media
Myth 1: Piles Always Heal on Their Own
Fact: Mild cases of piles, especially external hemorrhoids, may subside on their own with lifestyle changes such as increased fiber intake, proper hydration, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. However, chronic or severe cases often require medical intervention to prevent complications.
Myth 2: Only Surgery Can Treat Piles
Fact: Not all cases of piles require surgery. Many can be managed with non-surgical treatments such as dietary modifications, sitz baths, topical creams, and lifestyle adjustments. In severe cases, minimally invasive procedures like rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or laser treatment may be necessary.
Myth 3: Spicy Food Causes Piles
Fact: While spicy food can irritate the digestive system and worsen symptoms, it does not directly cause piles. The main contributors are chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, lack of fiber in the diet, and excessive straining during bowel movements.
Myth 4: Piles Are Only Found in Older People
Fact: While piles are more common in adults over 50, they can occur at any age. Factors such as pregnancy, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and chronic constipation can lead to piles in younger individuals as well.
Myth 5: Exercise Makes Piles Worse
Fact: Certain strenuous exercises like heavy weightlifting can worsen piles, but regular moderate exercise such as walking, swimming, or yoga can improve blood circulation and digestive health, reducing the risk of hemorrhoids.
When to Seek Medical Help?
If you experience persistent symptoms such as pain, bleeding, swelling, or discomfort, consult a doctor. Delaying treatment can lead to complications like thrombosed hemorrhoids, infections, or chronic pain.
Conclusion
While mild piles may heal on their own with proper care, severe or recurrent cases require medical attention. Understanding the myths and facts about piles can help in managing and preventing this condition effectively. If symptoms persist, seeking professional help is always the best approach.

Say Goodbye to the Pain: Practical Tips for Reducing Your Risk of Piles
Piles, or hemorrhoids, are a common yet painful condition affecting many individuals. They occur due to swollen veins in the rectal or anal area, often caused by constipation, prolonged sitting, or straining during bowel movements. While piles can disrupt daily life with discomfort and bleeding, the good news is that they are preventable with simple lifestyle changes. Adopting a fiber-rich diet, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly are key steps to maintaining healthy digestion and avoiding piles. Practicing good toilet habits, such as avoiding straining and prolonged sitting, also plays a crucial role in prevention.
If home remedies don’t help, don’t suffer silently. For those in Kerala, consulting a trusted piles specialist in Thrissur, Kerala like Dr. Raviram S. at Thrissur Piles Clinic ensures quick relief with modern treatments like painless laser surgery. Early action and expert care can save you from severe pain and costly procedures. Stay proactive, follow these practical tips for managing piles of pain, and reclaim your comfort!
What Causes Piles?
Piles can develop due to various reasons, including:
Chronic constipation or diarrhea
Straining during bowel movements
Sitting for long periods
Obesity
Poor dietary habits
Understanding these causes is the first step in preventing piles.
Practical Tips for Reducing Your Risk of Piles:
Eat a Fibre-Rich Diet:
A fiber-rich diet helps soften stools and promotes smooth bowel movements, reducing strain on rectal veins. Include foods such as:
Fruits (apples, bananas, kiwis)
Vegetables (spinach, broccoli, tomatoes)
Whole grains (brown rice, oats)
Legumes (lentils, chickpeas)
Fibre not only prevents constipation but also improves overall digestive health.
Stay Hydrated:
Drinking plenty of water (at least 3–4 liters daily) helps keep stools soft and easy to pass. Dehydration can lead to hard stools, increasing the risk of piles.
Exercise Regularly:
Physical activity improves blood circulation and prevents constipation. Activities like walking, yoga, and swimming are beneficial for maintaining healthy digestion and reducing pressure on rectal veins.
Practice Good Toilet Habits:
Avoid straining during bowel movements and respond promptly to the urge to defecate. Sitting for extended periods on the toilet increases pressure on the anal region. Use a footrest to maintain a natural squatting position for easier bowel movements.
Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing:
Long hours of sitting or standing can increase pressure on the anal veins. If your work involves sitting for extended periods, take short breaks to walk around or stretch.
Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Excess weight puts additional pressure on the abdomen and rectal veins, increasing the risk of piles. To manage your weight effectively, combine a balanced diet with regular exercise.
Keep Good Anal Hygiene:
Use unscented wipes or warm water to clean the anal area gently after bowel movements. Avoid excessive wiping or using high-pressure toilet jets that can irritate sensitive skin.
Myths and Misconceptions About Piles:
Understanding the facts helps in effective management:
Myth: Only older adults get piles.
Fact: While more common with age, piles can affect individuals of all ages.
Myth: Spicy foods cause hemorrhoids.
Fact: Spicy foods may irritate existing hemorrhoids but don’t directly cause them.
When to Seek Professional Help:
If home remedies don’t provide relief or if symptoms worsen, it’s essential to consult a specialist:
Persistent Pain or Bleeding: Continuous discomfort or significant bleeding requires medical evaluation.
Prolapsed Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids that protrude and don’t retract may need professional treatment.
Thrombosed Hemorrhoids: If you experience severe pain and swelling, it could indicate a clot in the hemorrhoid.
Conclusion:
Preventing piles is probable with simple lifestyle changes like eating fiber-rich foods, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and practicing good toilet habits. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a trusted proctologist in Thrissur, Kerala such as Dr. Raviram S., who provides effective laser treatment options for piles at Thrissur Piles Clinic.
Take proactive steps today to say goodbye to piles of pain and enjoy better digestive health!
