It was incredibly fascinating to him. Honestly, if knowledge of the multiverse was more widely known, this was the kind of subject that could have tons of theories and scientific journals speculating on how different yet similar the two of them were. He wasn't really qualified to try his hand at it, he was an engineer not a quantum physicist, but the topic was intriguing nonetheless.
"I usually just call him my roommate, or Felis catus if I'm feeling sassy. Still, to think I was actually right about him! I always knew there was something different about him, but for the longest time, I just thought I was crazy."
Morgana probably deserved his own species name, assuming he ever found out how he came to be. Though, what that name would be, he had no idea. Felis mona, maybe?
"He spends most of his time with Futaba on my world. He used to try to follow me around everywhere but... let's just say my method of travel isn't exactly feline friendly."
Though, he was still tempted to figure out a way to make it more tolerable for him. It'd be kinda awesome to carry him into battle and do some team-up attacks. Maybe he could even get his own little mask?
... nah, that probably wouldn't work out too well-
He could kinda relate on the family issues front. His uncle hates him ever since his arrest, and refuses to let his Aunt even talk to him. Not to mention, his mother's side of the family didn't approve of her moving to Japan, or of his father, and insisted she be buried back in England. And since his dad's only request was to be buried next to his wife, he can't visit either of their graves. At least... not easily.

That... was uncannily similar. And that wasn't the only thing.
"Heh- My Aunt actually calls me RenRen... Ryuji does too, but only because Akechi just had to tease me with it, and now he refuses to call me anything else-"
Honestly, as embarrassing as it was at the time, he'd gotten used to it. Though, he really wished his friend would stop yelling it in public-
"Eh, doesn't really matter what your name was originally. You say that's your name, then that's your name. Simple as that."
"Yeah, our parents are probably totally different people. It's interesting, though, how we still ended up so similar, despite everything."
Ren had a suspicion that there were a few more physical differences between them than just their eyes. But he wouldn't bring that up. That would make things more complicated and confusing.
"Oh, Mona hates being called a cat. He'll get really mad. And he can pick locks. I'm... not entirely sure how he does that without thumbs. But he's really good at it. It's nice to have him around to talk to. Though my dorm doesn't allow animals, so he's been staying with Haru lately. I miss having him around everyday... But yeah, he can definitely understand you."

He felt a little twinge of jealously as the other described his past. Part of it came from the idea of getting the chance to know Akechi sooner. But he knew the rest of it was because he envied having dead parents. It was awful, a horrible thing to think. But he couldn't help it. He would've greatly preferred no parents than the ones he had.
"...Try your best. Even you can't, even if he doesn't want you to, he deserves to have someone who won't give up on him..."

Ren paused for a moment. He didn't know whether he was more surprised at the differences in the two's names, or at their similarities.
"Oh, uh, not quite. I'm Amamiya Ren, but that's not my birth name. I changed it when I was put on probation." Well, officially, at least. He'd been calling himself 'Ren' for a lot longer than it had legally been his name. Not that most people called him that, of course.

Problem with me im super into variation but its TOO MUCH like each character is super different and im having trouble connecting the knots and even representing them correctly...like main character has very loser black clothing depressed Japanese worker style (i will explain why he is the blandist later when i get a good hold on 88miles and actually have balls to post it *update i got balls two seconds later read below the ---*) and the two secondary characters one has very old english/victorian diva type of style and the other likes rock/opium stuff so like yall see the issue? Is it too much? Im trying a few things and idkkkkkk if it works or not

The main idea of this whole thing is that me as a person i digest a disgusting amount of media (ps2&3&4 games, 80s 90s and esp 00s movies classics and in every genre possible, and lots of MANGA and now manhwas and stuff) i just get a pinch of reference here and here and there and boom i created this abomination
One thing i noticed about almost all of these the main character was always ALWAYS either (loser, nerd, bullied, poor) etc etc and always became strongest without any logical reasons despite having people stronger etc
I swear this pissed me off from childhood till this day because you can always lose??? Ofc theres people other than you?? Like tf...
Especially appearance wise that pissed me off and them being women magnets like 🤨 why dont you SUCK...why aren't you a LOSER 🤨🤨🤨🤨
I naturally drifted and got hooked on shows games that had unique main characters (think slam dunk, tokyo ghoul, my fav example brutal, games like silent hill, yakuza, tekken etc etc so many examples) and definitely games with more than one character and multiple choices instead of getting that same old bitchass every scene (mortal kombat, re)
The only honorable mention is ff cause cloud is a beautiful loser and he has a nice story and all elements of funny, intense and evil are sprinkled in the game
Sorry this was long but do yall get the vision? Yes i was a story with a point villians etc like i need a switch up.

And as for 88 miles I'll give you short summary (villians with morals vs villians without morals vs the corrupted police vs the good police vs the government vs the rich) *its how the story ties together but main theme is villains vs villians*.
Equipped with people from multiple countries (featured later on) and people of all opinions and genres. (Ages not so much its mostly 25 and up but i dooooo have a plan for a little spinoff/side story about highschoolers its mostly for the humor since the story might get dry from how much violence and stuff is mentioned)
So yeah stay tuned i guess (for a few years lmfao i made this when i was in middle fucking school now im less than half a year away from university)

Why I ✨Hate✨ Phin Mason
(any racism will be deleted <3)
In the Miles Morales PS5 game, we are introduced to a new version of the Tinkerer. Originally a one-off villain from the original Spiderman comics, the PS5 game developers try (and fail) to elevate the character.
First off, her personality. In most of the scenes, she is in with Miles, she’s just ruthlessly bullying him, this would be fine if it were a mutual thing but Miles just sits back and takes it?? Her entire personality basically dissolves into an ‘asshole that is better than Miles in every way possible’. The developers make her a weird tech genius, implied to be smarter than Miles and even Peter Parker in some scenes. This choice makes sense with her Tinkerer persona but (in my opinion) they kinda give her Ganke’s original personality and reduce him to a social media guru (refer back to the Thanksgiving scene at the beginning of the game).
In her FIRST SCENE (before we know her as the Tinkerer) she and the Underground attack a Roxon plaza where Miles’ mom Rio is campaigning. At this point, Miles doesn’t know Phin is the Tinkerer but Phin knows for a fact that Rio would be there (once again, refer back to the Thanksgiving scene at the beginning of the game). She is KNOWINGLY putting her friend's (and implied crush) mom at risk along with innocent civilians. And the WORST part of this is that this was completely unnecessary to the Underground's actual goals. Their real target was a truck containing Nuform of the COMPLETE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN, and since Phin is the leader of the Underground SHE chose to send a ton of her men to the rally, all while knowing Miles and Rio would be there. She then, out of costume, apologizes to Miles and blames the attack on Spiderman. HUH????
This bitch is dumb. And I mean that literally, her plan doesn’t make any sense. Despite the developer's attempts to make Phin seem like an evil genius, her entire plan falls apart once you think critically. Her goal is to halt the production of Nuform, a new, dangerous energy source developed by her brother, Rick. Nuform was also responsible for the eventual illness. Keep in mind that this illness didn’t kill him. While trying to destroy all the remaining Nuform, he got electrocuted (I think?) by it and then died in front of Phin.
(Apparently, this whole family is dumb ‘cause who takes a teen girl into a highly secured lab?)
Phin’s plan is constantly changing from the minute she is revealed as the Tinkerer to the final act. At one point Miles tries to warn her of Roxon's plan but she doesn;t take his warning and her entire plan falls to shit. And she has the AUDACITY to blame him for that!
And I haven’t even gotten to when she finds out that Miles is spider man! She accuses him of lying to her (which he was) in order to get access to her DOMESTIC TERRORIST ORGANIZATION! Did Miles lie, yes. But did Phin put innocent civilians at risk, including Rio? Yes! Phin needed to be taken down and she wouldn’t listen to anyone else instead of Miles.
The game wants us to believe that Phin is a sympathetic foil to Miles instead of the aggravating dumbass she really is. We see this in almost every interaction the two have. Miles is painted as a liar who doesn’t deserve a friend like Phin and is constantly apologizing to her, despite Phin being the aggressor and often in the wrong. Where ass Phin is depicted as a misguided girl with good intentions.
This is a problem because the plot of the game depends on Miles and Phin’s relationship, and if we don’t care about that relationship the emotional payoff at the end falls flat. Spoiler alert: the bitch dies. (DING DONG).

So I was watching a video that said if you call Miles Morales 'Miles Morales' instead of 'Spider-Man' you are racist. Then I saw someone defend this rake by bringing up the Flash, Robin and the Green Lantern.
That made me stop and go "Nope. Nuh huh. You're wrong there."
Let's break it down. Are there racists who refuse to acknowledge Miles as Spider-Man? Yes. Is everyone calling him Miles instead of Spider-Man racists? No.
Heroes like Spider-Man aren't going to be mantles.
He is like Superman and Batman like that.
When you mention these people only one name comes to mind .
Bruce Wayne is Batman not Jean-Paul Valley, not Terry Mcginnis or Dick Grayson. They are all great characters who have worn the bat-matle, but they have their own names as there is only on Batman. Even Terry is called Batman Beyond fir that reason.
It is worse with Superman everyone that isn't Clark is given a different mantle. John Henry Iron became Steel, Connor is perpetually Superboy and who Jon Kent got aged up be became Superman: Son of Kal-El. They all have a different name or called 'Superman, but' like Cyborg-Superman or Bizzaro-Superman.
Miles was different before he was Mikes Morales he was the Ultimate Spider-Man...and then the Ultimate universe was killed, then he became Miles Morales.
As for the comparison of the Flash, Robin and Green Lantern, those aren't the defences people think they are.
When people talk about Robin specifically they do one of 2 things. They use their names like people do with Miles or they use their other mantle. I once saw a video where the person said "Nightwing when he was Robin" at the start and another who said "Red Hood then Robin".
People make differentiation with the Robin and with the Flash and Green Lantern it is more pronounced.
They either say "Barry Allen" or "Jay Garrik" or they say "Wally West Flash" and the Green Lantern is built on that difference. The majority wither use their names (Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart etc) or they say Jessica Cruz Green Lantern.
The only time they don't differentiate is when there is only one version in the show/movie/medium they are taking about is the one that exists and even then it's not certain.
Look at JL/JLU John Stewart is the only Green Lantern and yet some still say John Stewart's Green Lantern when referring to him.
The issue is that in every version of Miles Morales Spider-Man, Peter Parker Spider-Man is there. Every single version.
The main issue is time. There have been decades of Peter Parker being Spider-Man. In all 3 live-action movie series it is Peter Parker we were given. Miles only got his movie series and game and past 5 years and even then Peter was there and people had to differentiate between them.since Miles is either 'Miles' or 'Spider-Man' and Peter is there so he is automatically Spider-Man.
The main issue is the prefix. Even in Spider-Man we have people separated by prefixes or suffixes. The Scarlet Spider-Man, the Superior Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man 2099. They all have something that separates then from Peter's mantle. And most of then are white so people aren't being racist not calling them Spider-Man.
All except Miles. Even the Ultimate Spider-Man is Jo longer Miles, there is a new Ultimate universe and the Spider-Man for that universe is Peter.
The issue summarised is that Peter has been too popular as Spider-Man for Miles to have that name. Look at Blue Beetle. Jaime Rayes is the most popular Blue Bettle and despite there being more than one he is referred to as Blue Beetle and his predecessor is call by his name, Ted Kord.
Until Miles surpasses Peter in popularity he will be Miles while Peter will be Spider-Man. Which isn't happening any time soon unfortunately.

Hard to say, because the thing about the Investigation games is that they're entirely focused on investigations, not trials. There'd be no point if it was called Miles Edgeworth Investigations with trials taking center stage like in the Ace Attorney games. I say that kind of hypothetical game of Miles Edgeworth having his own trials as a prosecutor should be treated as separate games from the investigation ones.
Co-Mod: Most of the characters I create are based on already existing characters in some way (not the least of which are Ace Attorney characters), so I'd probably create someone who looks and acts like Calisto Yew -- smug, apathetic, and calm until things stop going her way. Her "Objection!" would likely sound like Calisto's, too -- quiet, but firm. (Sorry I can't offer anything more creative than that.)
Mod Zieks: I really like this prompt! My general idea for a 'villain defense attorney' would be a high-charging-rates style business man, (Red White style.) Victoria Scarletti. Defense Attorney. To give a description of how I believe her character would be written:
Background: Victoria Scarletti's journey to becoming a renowned defense attorney was far from easy. Born into poverty, she experienced homelessness and struggled to make ends meet from a young age. Determined to escape the cycle of poverty, Victoria dedicated herself to her studies, excelling academically despite facing numerous obstacles along the way. Her drive and determination eventually earned her a scholarship to Ivy Law School, where she graduated at the top of her class.
Personality: Victoria's difficult past has left its mark on her, instilling in her a deep-seated desire for financial security and stability. She is fiercely ambitious and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals, even if it means resorting to unscrupulous methods. Despite her charming exterior, Victoria harbors a sense of resentment towards those who have never known hardship, driving her to crave wealth and success above all else.
Appearance: Despite her humble beginnings, Victoria presents herself with an air of sophistication and elegance. She dresses impeccably in designer suits and accessories, using her appearance to project an image of wealth and success to the world. I could definitely see her with long, dirty blonde or ruby red hair, well kept into a bun, with a silver spoon in place of the classic chopstick look (referring to the 'silver spoon' of wealth, of course.) Oh, and bright red stilettos. She is a tall girl in high heels.
Modus Operandi: Victoria's troubled past has made her relentless in her pursuit of wealth and power. She has no qualms about using her legal expertise to manipulate the justice system to her advantage, often representing wealthy clients who can afford her high fees. Victoria is not above bending the rules or exploiting loopholes to secure a favorable outcome for her clients, regardless of the moral implications.
Motivation: Victoria's tumultuous upbringing has fueled her desire for financial security and success. She sees the legal profession as a means to achieve the wealth and status she craves, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to climb the ranks and establish herself as a prominent figure in the legal world. Her troubled past serves as a constant reminder of where she came from, driving her to never settle for anything less than the best.

Chief Mod Edgeworth: The Signal Samurai wasn't in the game and no the anime is NOT canon. In fact, I hate the anime. It keeps changing things from the game that are pointless and adding things that ruin certain aspects of the game such as Edgeworth admitting that his death note was him metaphorically saying he was dead, Edgeworth being adopted by Manfred von Douchebag and Celeste Inpax being Adrian's sister.
Edgeworth claiming his note was not a suicide note defeats the purpose of the second game and character growth. Sure, he may've not given us an explanation for the note, but that's because the game knew when to allow the game to tell the story. Edgeworth being adopted was also stupid, since again the game allowed us to come to our own conclusions about his relationship with Manfred von Karma. Not to mention it defeats the purpose of Franziska von Karma being the heir to the von Karma's. Sure, she sees Edgeworth as her brother, but it's common in Japan to call someone your brother even if you're not their brother by relation, adoption or the like.

Celeste Inpax being the sister of Adrian defeats the point of their relationship and how it connects to the overall arching plot. Their relationship represents Edgeworth's relationship with his mentor Manfred von Karma and what led him to write a suicide note. Making them sisters defeats the point of Edgeworth's relationship with his mentor, what led him to write that note, makes us question if the note was legit and feels more like a comparison to Franziska, which makes no sense being that she was supposed to be a reflection of Phoenix Wright and the troubles he's going through.
The only good things I've heard about the anime were mostly the stand-alone episodes that weren't connected to the game, which makes me wonder why it couldn't have just be it's own Defense Attorney show like The Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The anime is a shell of the original game and feels like a cash grab at worst. My suggestion is to watch the live action Ace Attorney movie. It's more faithful to the games, doesn't make pointless changes and the changes it does make are because of the low budget.
Mod Zieks: It's good for what it is. Hot take, it's not as good as the games, sure, but it's a well-done voiceover that illustrates the basic plot points, while providing us a more fleshed-out version of the character's backgrounds. Also, it gave us perfect smear frames. Like this one from the Will Powers case of Miles throwing the spear, edited to look like he's being held up like a cat. (Apologies if the edit is bad, I did it myself.)

Artistically, in my opinion, Barok van Zieks has the best character design from the outfit, to his hair, eyes, body shape and facial expressions. The worst would be Phineas Filch, but that isn't saying much, considering all the characters introduced in Duel Destinies are all fugly. It took maybe a year for me to get used to Duel Destinies' Defense Phoenix Wright sprite. I can't be the only one getting uncanny valley feelings whenever I see Phoenix's sprite from Duel Destinies.

He's such a shit-eating bastard and I adore his design for it. He picked 'Victorian era vampire' as his vibe and WENT with it. Props to him.

Okay, filtered MSM 2 thoughts:
We knew Kraven was gonna show up in the sequel, however, I def did not expect The Lizard/Dr. Connors and the fact that Kraven is focused on him instead of Peter or Miles is very interesting. I wonder if they're gonna sort of recreate/reference Kraven's Last Hunt 👀
Either way, I'm very excited to see these classic villains showing up. Maybe we'll see Yuri Watanabe/Wraith too??? They were building her up in one of the DLCs quite well. Also, interested to see how Peter will react since they were friends.
Gameplay!!!!!! I already loved the gameplay in the first game, and the Miles Morales game improved upon that. And they seemed to take it another step further, it's like they actually listened to the criticism that people had, and I didn't know it was possible to improve the already banger gameplay (tho yes the first one was a little clunkier but still v intuitive)
The new traversal features look so good hello?? The web wings used as a glider? Miles slingshotting himself across the city??? aoughhfg and also!!! It looks like we'll be able to explore other parts of New York like Queens and maybe Brooklyn??? tbh Manhattan became a little restrictive after a while in the first two games, so it would be cool to expand the map a bit. Y'all know I'm meh about huge maps with some exceptions, but if done right, I think it's gonna be good.
Putting this under a read more bc this game is driving me insane I'm eating drywall
So I was right that we'll be able to switch between Peter and Miles. I kinda guessed that they're gonna be mission specific, and maybe, we can switch between them in free roam like with Jacob and Evie in AC: Syndicate (this specific feature isn't confirmed, just speculation on my part)
Looks like Nuform changed Miles' abilities since his Venom (heh) powers can turn blue? I'm interested to see what it did to him and if they're going to address it. Maybe it's purely for aesthetic/gameplay reasons. Who knows, I'm still curious.
Also, love how they incorporated Ganke as their guy in the chair. I loved him in MM and the fact that he helped Miles with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app. Just give me more Ganke please, he was really charming and they managed to differentiate him from MCU Ganke Ned that he feels like his own character.
Okay, I'm done beating around the bush and I'm going to address the elephant in the room - the symbiote. This is all we've been waiting for, we knew from the post-credits scene from the first game that Peter is gonna have the black suit. I'm glad Insomniac were like "yeah let's get this over with" and showed it to us.
And people are already calling him Bully Lowenthal 💀
Now, I was a little bit iffy about the design of the black suit, but after I watched the trailer a couple of times, it's starting to grow on me? Maybe I'm looking too much into it but the organic armor/exoskeleton design gives me xenomorph vibes, and I love the tendrils in the "exposed" exoskeleton. The texture looks gross and slimy and I love it. I was wondering if they're gonna add some subtle sci-fi horror elements to it and they delivered. I've always said that the symbiote has a lot of space/eldtrich horror potential.
Which brings me to the tendrils (I can already hear the p*rn artists working hard), jokes aside, they look so cool and they're animated so well???? The way Peter fights with them??? He straight up turns into a uhhh tentacle monster for a split second. And his fighting style is so brutal, I liked when he kept repeatedly kicking the guy as if he was a punching bag ddjhsjh
but the scene where he shows up in the sewers(???) yeah this shot legit gave me chills bro looks fr intimidating

And do I really need to gush about Yuri Lowenthal's voice acting? Ben 10 off the shits I'm gonna do it anyway bc holy shit he got the guttural growl down to a T. However, I do wish they put a very subtle filter on his voice. Doing that kind of growly voice must've hurt his throat real bad. Maybe his voice is gonna become more monstrous as the game progresses, that'd be real neat :3c

Earth-1048 (spider-man games) verse !
important note : i haven’t finished the second game yet. but i believe i’m almost at the end & i’ll probably add more things later but for now, this is how i imagine scarlett’s life on earth Earth-1048:
spoilers bellow.
→ scarlett’s story remains pretty much the same here—the avengers exist there too so that’s perfect.
→ she lives in the city with her parents ( my headcanon is that they live in little odessa bc it kind of lines up with a black widow comic but that's just my personal headcanon & it's not set in stone. it's just to give me some kind of personal reference ) & she's already pretty used to having 2 spideys acting in the city.
→ i've mentioned this before, but i'll say it again—the scene back in spider-man: miles morales where hailey talks about a friend named scarlett inspired me to imagine my scarlett as that friend. it lines up perfectly & imagine they'd be good friends. and yes, scarlett wanted a picture with miles. whether she got it or not, we'll find out later.
→ as for how she and hailey met and became friends, i imagine it was at F.E.A.S.T. because scarlett volunteers there and often befriends the kids in the area. she was very impressed with hailey's artistic talents, approached her & the rest is history. scarlett also knows asl, which i imagine it would make everything easier for them.
→ having scarlett & hailey being friends makes her around miles age. which, again, isn’t far from my main verse.
→ i imagine scarlett goes to midtown high and after that she’ll be joining shield academy ( same as her main verse honestly ).
→ she still acts as a vigilante on her own, but she rarely cross paths with the spiders. it can happen, of course, but it’s not always. i also  i don’t see scarlett actually taking part in any of the major events there ( i can see her watching them in the news or being near and talking about it and stuff ) but i can see her fighting some hunters in the city. this also can be plotted differently.
yeah so—these are just some ideas i've been having & thinking about for the past few days but i’ll be developing more as i finish the game & get to write more on this verse. i’ll post more headcanons soon & of course, feel free to ask if you’d like to know something i haven’t mentioned :)

Ooh, for sure!  I wanted to write for PW:AA era Edgeworth after 1-2 because, uh, that was probably real rough, buddy.  He crushed a paper cup with hot coffee in it during 1-3 when it seemed like he was losing the trial so…Prompt 136 ( “You’re upset.” - “I’m not.” - “I know that face. That’s your I’m-upset-with-you face. And your eyebrows - they get really expressive when you’re mad.”) is from this list.
When you heard that Edgeworth had finally lost a trial, you were quick to make your way up to the prosecutor’s office.  After knocking on the door and not getting an answer you knock again and state your name.  You wouldn’t be surprised if he’d turn you away or ignore you, but it was worth a shot, anyway.  As the proverbial thorn of friendship in his side, you at least had to try, like always.
“…Come in.”
Oh no.  The sight that greets you when you open the door is not a good sign.  He’s standing in front of the window, seemingly staring out over the city.  That’s a new brooding position, you could only assume that it means this was an advanced state of brooding.
“Here to tell me ‘I told you so,’ are we?”
You sigh, closing the door behind you before treading across his office.  There isn’t just a note of bitterness in his voice, it’s more like an entire symphonic movement.
“Not at all!  I just wanted to check on you, is all.  When I heard you lost, I was worried about how you were handling it.”  When you stop beside him and look up at him, whatever it is you were about to say flies the coop when you catch sight of the expression on his face.  
He spares a glance at you from out of the corner of his eyes, the scowl on his lips deepening at your expression of concern—whether from doubt or annoyance, you couldn’t tell.  He’s got a white knuckle grip on the saucer and the delicate handle of his teacup, you’re surprised it’s able to withstand that type of force.
“Wow.  You… sure are upset, huh?”
“I am most certainly not.”
However, his eyebrows are drawn together so hard that he’s got the Grand Canyon between them.
“Mm, I don’t buy that for a moment.  I know that face.”  You narrow your eyes and gesture by circling your finger in the direction of his head.  “That’s your ‘I’m-upset-with-the-world face.’  And you know how I know that?  It’s because of your eyebrows get really expressive when you’re upset.”  To clarify your point you scrunch up your face as dramatically as you can to emulate it.
He looks away from you, his finger entering its metronome mode on the edge of the saucer.  “E-Excuse me…!?  I don’t look like that.”  He sighs before his expression seems to harden, you can imagine the severity of the glare even when it’s not directed toward you.  “I should have known you only came here to make a mockery of me.  Like always.”
It’s a herculean feat to resist the urge to roll your eyes, but you somehow do and take a deep breath in as your own expression hardens.
“Miles, I was explaining why your bluff was bad to you, while also teasing you just a little bit.  It’s hard not to.”  He’s too cute and it’s too easy.  You cross your arms over your chest.  “You know that’s how I am, just as I know you take yourself very seriously.  But that’s not what I came here for today.”
“And, pray tell, what did you come here for?  If not to rub salt in my wounds or mock me, I fail to see what other motive you could possibly have as I doubt it was to check in on me.”
“Ooh, now that’s just cold!”  You uncross an arm to point over at his chess set, his gaze follows the gesture after catching it from his peripheral vision.  “But I did come to see how you were doing, but also to play chess with you, of course!  Wanted to keep you from brooding, y’know…?”
It’s subtle, but you can see his nearest brow twitch through a few different positions before settling into a slightly less intense angle.  He takes a long sip from his cup of tea, evidently thinking, before turning back to the window and setting his tea down on the top of the shelf.  The death glare is absent, but the furrow is still very much there, but it looks…more contemplative, you think?
“I…I do not brood.”
That’s certainly not the answer you were expecting (nor were you anticipating the little falter in his voice) and it takes all of your willpower to not laugh or stare adoringly at him.  This man’s really going to be the death of you one of these days.
“M-Miles, you do a lot of things and brooding is most certainly one of them.  I don’t know if it’d be possible for you to brood more than you presently do, I think it might be impossible… but you know what you also do?”
“What?”
“You also always beat me in chess,” you say, gently grabbing his nearest arm and giving it a gentle tug toward the chess set, only for him to go rigid at the contact.  “C’mon, it’ll be fun…!  Like always.”
He sighs, but relaxes and follows your lead, “Please don’t jinx it.”
You let out a laugh and, you swear, you see the dent between his brows ease ever so slightly and the corners of his lips quirk upwards just a tad in the ghost of a smile.  But that was probably just your imagination…
Because Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth does many things, but anything close to genuinely smiling isn’t one of them.  Not yet, at least.

"You wonder, "Who is this?" Yes... I shall make that clear first. My name is Korekiyo Shinguji... I am called the Ultimate Anthropologist."

Hello everyone, my name is Milo, and today I’ll be doing my best to cover one of my favorite characters in the Danganronpa universe, Korekiyo Shinguji. He is originally from the 3rd mainline game, New Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony. Since I don’t physically own the game, I’m basing most of this essay entirely on the Danganronpa Wiki page for Shinguji. Please read that if you desire a more lengthy look at his actions from an unbiased perspective since this one leans more towards empathy than hatred. Whoops!
We first properly meet him after talking to everyone else inside of Hope’s Peak. He’s in the main hall and standing away from the doors leading out to the courtyard. When he introduces himself, Shinguji goes on to talk about anthropology and the beauty of humanity. This proceeds to creep Akamatsu out.
Alongside that, in Chapter 3, we are unfortunately forced to see his relationship with his sister. It’s weird and only gets weirder if you spend two of your Free Time events talking to him when you first play as Akamatsu. He’s evaluated that all girls present at the academy would be great “friends” for his sister, barring Iruma and Harukawa. This is because Shinguji believes that Harukawa doesn’t believe in the power of love, and Iruma is just… well, she’s Iruma. Hardly the girl you would want to send home to your parents.
This weird incest plotline is unfortunately present in most Danganronpa games, such as Leon and his cousin (though one-sided on his cousin’s behalf; he didn’t like her), Tsumugi in the Love Hotel (if you consider that canon), and Monotaro & Monophanie (which is then implemented into Gokuharu’s execution, killing them both).
His sister’s name is never disclosed in-game or in any other Danganronpa media, so the fandom dubbed her “Miyadera/Miyatera,” which is an alternate way of reading Shinguji’s last name. The miya character - represented as 宮 - and tera character - 寺 - are both present in Shinguji, 真宮寺. For the rest of this essay/paper, I’ll be referring to his sister as Miyadera, and himself as Shinguji.
I’ll be getting deeper into his mischaracterization later on, but I want to talk about his appearance for now. Mainly, his hair, his mask, and the lipstick he wears. From what we see of Miyadera in Shinguji’s execution, if that is Miyadera at all, we can see that she had long hair, and when Shinguji was turned into a ghost, it was the exact shade of Shinguji’s hair. From here, we can assume that Miyadera looks exactly, if not similar, to Shinguji.
His lipstick and mask are results of representations of his tulpa, Miyadera. Tulpa is defined as “a concept in mysticism and the paranormal of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers.” In much simpler terms, it is an object or living thing that was created/imagined through spiritual/mental abilities. Shinguji gained a tulpa by being beaten half to death by villagers shortly after arriving there. When he was in a state between life and death, he saw his sister, who joined his subconscious and took control of his body whenever his mask was off. It’s why we only see him take off his make once Saihara dubs him the culprit of Chapter 3, and why his voice suddenly took a more feminine tone. A quote from Miyadera, which can be found in the game, is, "Sweet Korekiyo, calm yourself... Their words are all hollow. There is no meaning to any of them... You must teach these ignorant children a lesson."
That statement can be interpreted two ways, one; that she’s trying to calm him down and two; she’s repeating whatever she said to him during childhood. It’s implied that Miyadera passed away from disease sometime before Killing Harmony takes place, which is both a good and bad thing. It’s great because then we have some time frame of how she was and how she acted when Shinguji knew her best.
Whenever I read the quote above, or any of her quotes, to be honest, I am filled with a sense of dread, or even, despair. The following quote especially makes me feel terrible; "Calm yourself, Korekiyo. You mustn't raise your voice. You mustn't stutter. You mustn't lose composure. You mustn't become flustered. You mustn't waver. Look at their horrid faces. This sorry lot is not worth agonizing over."
Have you noticed how she’s setting guidelines on how to defend himself? She’s turning Shinguji’s attention away from Saihara and the trial and to her because she knows that Shinguji trusts her even after all these years.
You might be wondering, “Milo, what the hell does that all have to do with Shinguji?” And I’ll tell you plain and simple: he was abused by Miyadera. Shocking, I know. Having Shinguji rave and rant about being in love with her, only to be a victim? Sadly, it’s very true indeed. Shinguji was most likely groomed and gaslighted into thinking that Miyadera loved him when that was not the case.
Gaslighting is defined as, “[to] manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.” From the two quotes I provided, it doesn’t seem to make sense. Miyadera only sounds like a kind, worrisome older sister. Incorrect, I say. She’s emotionally gaslighting him, trying to make him believe that the trial makes no sense and he shouldn’t worry about any of them. I can also bet she used this tactic to control him as a younger person as well.
It’s a well-known fact that children are both impressionable and gullible. If an older sister figure came up to you as a child and told you to do unmentionable things, unfortunately, you might follow her directions. Shinguji states that his sister was a sickly girl who often stayed in the hospital. When she would come home, he’d be at his easiest to manipulate. Why would his dear, sweet, sickly, older sister ever lie to him?
Next, I’m going to be covering his relationships with other students, namely Shuichi Saihara and Rantaro Amami. These will delve further into spoiler territory, so if you didn’t already read the warnings I put in place, here is your extra warning for spoilers for Chapter 3 of Killing Harmony.
To start with, I’ll be exploring his poorer relationships first. Most of the girls fit into this category, namely Iruma, Harukawa, Chabashira, and Yonaga - that means he has a terrible standing with four of the eight girls present at the beginning of Killing Harmony, five if you count Yumeno’s way of dealing with Chabashira’s murder. Shinguji even taunts her once they solve that mystery, stating, “Let me guess, you’ll never forgive me. Himiko, you must hate me so very much right now. Maybe you’d feel better if I was executed by Monokuma…”
Shinguji has a poor relationship with Iruma and Harukawa due to seeing them as “unfit” to be “friends” with Miyadera. He has a poor relationship with Chabashira because he’s a degenerate male, but he still thinks she made a good friend for his sister. His poor relationship with Yonaga is shown in Chapter 3 when Yonaga forms the student council. Once again, I’m making amends to some parts of the characters. I’ll be referring to Yonaga’s god as God, simply because Atua is an actual Polynesian god in real life. Shinguji doesn’t worship any god, and so wants to study Yonaga’s God purely for anthropologic purposes. This displeases Yonaga, who then states that God's business hours are closed for the day. In Chapter 3 when Yumeno brings up Yonaga’s God, he simply asks whether or not they’re done talking about it, cementing his distrust in faith.
Next, I’ll cover his better relationships. Akamatsu isn’t too terribly creeped out by him and instead sees Shinguji as a kind guy who cares about his sister. Akamatsu even apologizes for saying that Shinguji would be into inc*st, this event either taking place in his first or second Free Time event. I’m saving his and Saihara’s relationship for last since I’ll have the most to write about then. Instead, please enjoy the news that in the events of Ultimate Talent Development Plan (UTDP for typing purposes), Shinguji and Amami are actually great friends. In Amami’s first free time event, he tells Akamatsu that Korekiyo has a strong personality, but she’ll be able to understand him plenty if she takes time to. It’s also stated that Amami emphasizes that Shinguji is also the calm and clever type.
Lastly, I’ll be exploring his relationship with Saihara. It’s slightly rocky, if only because Shinguji hasn’t let go of his sister yet, but it’s miles better than his relationship with Chabashira. Slight side note before we begin, I’ll be discounting the Love Hotel scene mostly because I’m a minor and I don’t feel completely comfortable having to watch that simply because I’m writing an analysis. As the game progresses to Chapter 3, Shinguji and Saihara have built trust between themselves. While Saihara still found Shinguji creepy, he [Saihara] never discounted him simply for existing. There was even a point where Shinguji offered to help Saihara communicate with Akamatsu from beyond the grave, though he was turned down.
Korekiyo Shinguji is a misunderstood and somewhat tragic character who usually gets disregarded and uncredited all because people do not like him. However he’s not an “uwu soft twamatized bean <3” either. He’s a strong character who has questionable morals at best and a terrible representation of an abused character at worst.

A Review of Every Single Episode of Inside No. 9 [1/2]
Disclaimer: my opinions are not definitive but they are bloody good. There may be spoilers so read at your own risk. This will probably have to be a two-parter for the sake of my sanity and your scrolling.  
Series 1
1. Sardines 
A killer way to kick off a series with an absolutely top notch cast. This episode probably wins the award for the episode I’ve spent the most time thinking about after watching, putting all the little things that went over my head at first into place. I love the set design in this episode as well with everything seeming delightfully old fashioned. 
2. A Quiet Night In
This episode is something of a masterclass in farce and it is a Bold Move to have the second episode of a new series almost completely free of dialogue. It’s dirty, it’s fully of silly slapstick and it’s a nice change of pace after the rather harrowing ending to the first episode. 
3. Tom and Gerri 
This is an episode I enjoyed more when I thought about it more. It beautifully shows the decline of Tom’s mental health (acted impeccably, lovely work from Reece) due to grief. Also it was quite nice to see Reece and Steve acting opposite each other more, they have great chemistry together and Steve as Migg is perfectly unsettling. 
4. Last Gasp
Now, I have to be honest with you: I do not exclusively have glowing praise for this episode. I enjoyed it far more after watching it more than once as I liked the humour of it. One of my favourite things was the video camera perspective at the start, as well as some lovely moments with the music. However, I’m not overly keen on the ending, I just found it slightly underwhelming. 
5. The Understudy
Back on the praise train kids! I am a big old Shakespeare nerd (as are Reece and Steve, apparently) and I studied Macbeth for my GCSEs so I was particularly excited when I watched it. I will also have to give a little nod to the directing of this episode, it was an absolute feast for the eyes. 
6. The Harrowing
Oh hell yes (no pun intended). I think this episode is a great one to cap off the first series, really demonstrating the versatility of Steve and Reece. Also, I’m a big horror fan and the entire atmosphere of it really appealed to me. Though I would say that the second I saw that house I would have run about fifteen miles in the opposite direction.
Series 2
1. La Couchette
This episode is very similar to Sardines in the sense that it feels rather claustrophobic, but this time it leans far more towards the comedy side of things rather than drama. Bonus points for Steve demonstrating his German skills. 
2. The 12 Days of Christine
Ah yes, the episode I’ve cried at every time I’ve watched it. This one is a strong demonstration of how to wrong foot an audience: you never quite know what’s going on until towards the end and all of the horror-esque moments just add to the confusion making the ending one hell of an emotional gut-punch. I wouldn’t watch it if you need something to cheer you up, though.
3. The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge
My second favourite episode of series two, The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge is packed to the brim with silly puns and smutty jokes. I personally predicted the twist but in this case I don’t think it really mattered as I was too busy enjoying the Horrible Histories for adults thing that was going on. Bonus points for another killer cast.
4. Cold Comfort
The first of two episodes directed by Steve and Reece and really quite a bold one at that. The whole thing is filmed in the style of a CCTV feed, which I’m pretty sure an experienced director would warn you off trying, but it really pays off in the narrative. Since the camera doesn’t switch focus at any point, it really relies on the acting performances to keep your focus which, in my opinion, the cast fucking nailed.
5. Nana’s Party
If I had to describe the episode in two words they would be ‘domestic drama’. It’s a fairly classic setup of a family with their fair share of secrets, namely adultery and alcoholism, but happily doesn’t give the game away too early and a layer of humour is added by the slightly irritating prankster character of Pat. It’s the second episode of the series directed by Steve and Reece and has a sort of understated quality to it, showing Claire Skinner’s character’s exacting nature above a layer of familial drama. 
6. Séance Time
My favourite episode of series two, at first you think you’re walking into another haunted house scenario until you find out it’s a prank show that went off the air due to a scandal. There’s a great sense of humour throughout, and I don’t know whether I’m easily freaked out or the final jumpscare was genuinely terrifying but I flew about fifteen feet into the air when I saw it. Once I’d peeled myself off the ceiling, I really appreciated that it felt like a slow burn horror despite still only being half an hour. 
Series 3
1. The Devil of Christmas
I live for schlocky horror films that are so cheesy they give you nightmares if you watch them before bed. So the 1970s film within the episode, accompanied by a director’s commentary-cum-police interview performed by Derek Jacobi, was an absolute treat. The story of Krampus is one that has been done a lot, but never as a snuff film (as far as I know) so it was a nice little twist.
2. The Bill
Every time I rewatch Inside No. 9 this is the episode I always have to watch no matter what. It is such a simple premise and it feels slightly reminiscent of the Geoff, Mike and Brian sketches from The League of Gentlemen. Now is probably the moment where I should sing the praises of director Guillem Morales who has, quite frankly, become my personal hero having seen the many, many episodes of this series he’s directed. The framing in this episode is absolutely genius, but it’s only really obvious after you’ve watched it a few times and I have to give kudos for making a dialogue-heavy episode visually interesting. There are jokes that I think about at least twice a week and I am obsessed with Jason Watkins’ acting...I think this will be my longest review of this whole post. 
3. The Riddle of the Sphinx
This is the best episode I will never watch again. I love horror, and I’ve watched some bone-chilling films but something about this episode made me feel so uncomfortable. It is also a real testament to Steve Pemberton, who I’m led to believe is the cryptic crossword fan who took the lead writing this episode, that he wrote something involving cryptic crosswords that didn’t give me a migraine. 
4. Empty Orchestra
Ah, what a nice change of pace after the last episode with something far lighter. The karaoke booth concept is so fun and I’ve never understood the criticism of the episode. That being said, of every single antagonist in every single episode of Inside No. 9, Connie is the character I love to hate the most. All of the characters feel more like people you’ve met before and the vibe of a group of work colleagues in a karaoke booth going through the usual petty drama feels familiar. I think series three is one that has some of the darkest concepts and this is a great exception to that. 
5. Diddle Diddle Dumpling
When I looked in the background more while rewatching this episode, I noticed a lot of things were in twos. I can only assume that was a deliberate choice made somewhere along the line, and one that pays off when you notice it. Both Mat Baynton and Keeley Hawes played their parts to perfection, with Mat really doing quite a lot with a fairly small part. The whole episode reads as an interesting analysis of grief, in a similar sense to Tom and Gerri. Also, Reece’s character did not murder the remaining twin and apparently I’m the weirdo for thinking that was what was being implied. In my defence, there was cannibalism earlier in the series; filicide did not seem like that big of a leap.
6. Private View 
Agatha Christie eat your heart out (that wasn’t meant to be a reference to the ending, it’s just a happy accident). Murder mysteries are my absolute jam so I am obsessed with this episode. The modern art show is such a great setting for a whodunnit as demonstrated by the reaction to the discovery of Peter Kay’s character’s body. All the characters have their brilliant little quirks, and the killer is revealed at the perfect time and it was a good idea to not make that reveal the twist.

KarpReviews - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Back when The Hunger Games became a huge phenomenon, I have to admit that it didn’t quite grab me like it did for many. The original film came out on March 23rd, 2012, followed by Catching Fire late next year. These films started a trend of dystopian novel movie adaptations, with Divergent coming out on March 21st 2014, and Maze Runner coming out on September 19th that same year. By the time Mockingjay: Part One released on November 21′s, right after Maze Runner, I’d become a little burnt out on these tales of children fighting for survival against an oppressive system meant to keep society under control. Despite reading the first two books in the series, I didn’t return for Mockingjay. 
That is, until a few months ago.  I decided to give the books another try, and to my delight I grew to really love and appreciate them. Katniss is a wonderful protagonist, surrounded by a surprisingly colorful and interesting cast of characters (even though it still features the classic love triangle trope.) While the first two books were rereads, going in blind into Mockingjay was a treat, and I felt the series had a wonderfully satisfying ending. 
Imagine my delight, however, when I realized that there was a prequel to the series! The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes features a much different entry in the story, taking place long before the events of the main series to highlight the tenth Hunger Games. In order to spice up what is comparatively an archaic and unpolished annual event, The Capitol has enlisted a large selection of students from an elite secondary school - simply referred to as “The Academy” - to mentor the children forced to fight in the arena! Who else should be chosen to be a mentor but a young Coriolanus Snow, hoping to become recognized and attain a university scholarship on his path to becoming President of Panem.
Yes, this entry puts us in the perspective of the infamous Coriolanus Snow, allowing us to see a little bit into what led to the events of the original Hunger Games novel. Not only does it flesh out Snow himself, but also how the titular event became the lavish, intricate, and audacious spectacle depicted during Katniss’s run in the arena. This allows this entry to differentiate itself immensely from the others, allowing it to feel fresh and new while it gives us a better look into the universe we’ve become a part of after three other novels and four films. With that being said, I want to dive deeper into what makes this particular entry so engaging. 
While other entries in the series have a bit of a fluid structure, our story this time is split into very neat thirds: The events leading up to the games, the games themselves, and the aftermath. This time, we get to see the perspective of the games from the capitol’s eyes, as opposed to the districts. However, while the event is massively celebrated, with banquets, parties, tours, and intricate broadcasts during the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, the 10th is much different. It’s much bleaker and more depressing, as tributes are treated like livestock, with no access to good food or proper shelter. Many citizens, District or Capitol, would rather ignore the barbaric event, only bothering to attend The Reaping before returning to daily life. There’s no reward for victory, beyond the singular tribute avoiding death, only to return to the poverty-stricken districts. Tributes die before even entering the arena, leading the games themselves to be swift and merciless. 
Ultimately, this raw and bleak depiction of the games, combined with Capitol citizens not yet disillusioned by the grandeur of future games, still recovering from the war, is a perfect choice for this Capitol-centric prequel. It keeps the citizens of The Capitol that we spend most of our time with from being completely unsympathetic, and it allows for a much more engaging story. Even before the games themselves, many things happen that impact the story, allowing for a lot of tension as things lead up to the main event. 
Speaking of the Hunger Games, this is the first time we get to enjoy them from outside of the arena itself. As the story follows our mentors, we get to watch from their perspective as spectators as the games commence in the arena. This event also happens to be the first where sponsors are allowed to affect the games, sending gifts for the tributes to possibly keep them alive. Since the mentors themselves have agency over the games, they never feel boring as you hope for the survival of our main character’s tribute. The aftermath of the games left me absolutely shocked, leading into a finale that felt unlike anything the series has had to offer before.
Even though Coriolanus Snow is designated as our main character, this story is truly given life by the people who surround him. Closest to him is Sejanus Plinth, a childhood friend who joins Snow in the tribute mentorship program as his classmate. At first, Sejanus is telegraphed as an old rival and a clear foil to Snow, and you suspect he’ll be something of an antagonist given the disdain Coriolanus seems to have for him. However, I was pleasantly surprised as the story paints a much more intricate picture of our main character’s best friend. Their relationship is one of the many highlights of this story, as even when Snow tries to distance himself, or otherwise shows dislike for Sejanus, their paths become forcibly intertwined, and it becomes unclear whether they will become bitter rivals or loyal comrades.
The real star of the show for me is Coriolanus’s tribute, a District 12 girl named Lucy Grey Baird. A member of the Covey, she’s a performer and singer who prides herself in her skill for entertainment. With both Panem and the reader as her audience, her personality and charm is utterly captivating, with an even sharper wit than Katniss. Despite the circumstances, she becomes fond of Coriolanus early on, a fact attributed to Snow being one of the few mentors that goes out of his way to forge a bond with his tribute. She leaves an impression from her very first scene, and every moment with her going forward is captivating and wonderful. Truly, if I had to give a single reason to read this book, it would be for Lucy Grey specifically. Even though her situation seems completely impossible, you can’t help but hope for her victory in the games. 
Of course, there’s always room for a good antagonist, even in a story starring Coriolanus Snow. Casca Highbottom, dean of The Academy, is one of the main obstacles making Snow’s future so uneasy. The story says little about him at first, only that he isn’t Coriolanus’s biggest fan, and that he created the Hunger Games themselves. He’s hard to read as a threat, given his addiction to painkillers and somewhat contradictory dialogue. Truthfully, he’s not much of a villain. 
Enter Doctor Volumnia Gaul.  Serving as the head Gamemaker, as well as an instructor at the Capitol University, she spends a large amount of time with both Coriolanus and the other mentors. Specializing in the “muttations” that her labs create for the Capitol, she serves as something of a mentor herself for Snow, challenging his morals and shaping his ideals. She starts off as seeming like an ally, only for her to show just how dangerous she is. She has a blatant disregard for life itself, only just barely being grounded enough to not be entirely absurd. Her presence gives the story a lot of much-needed tension, and I found her to be absolutely riveting. 
What impresses me the most about Songbirds and Snakes is how it expertly avoids delivering what could have easily come off as a tragic backstory intended to garner sympathy for Panem’s ruthless dictator. Instead, it cleverly highlights Coriolanus’s personality, nature, aspirations, and faults, adding to his character without ever trying to suggest that he’s misunderstood or redeemable. His downfall, while accelerated by his environment, can be attributed entirely to the choices he makes himself. Even when surrounded by good people who genuinely love and care for him, miles away from the capitol, he makes the choice to become who he is: a vile, treacherous, untrusting snake. Yet, despite knowing his fate, there was a part of me that hoped he would make the right choice anyway, making the end of his arc even more effective. 
Suzanne Collins is a truly talented writer. Not only is the original trilogy a fantastic read, but she managed to craft a prequel that both builds the lore of the series and has a major impact on the story as a whole. The connecting tissue between this prequel and the rest of the series is solid, not only fleshing out the world explicitly, but leaving breadcrumbs for attentive fans to enjoy. Upon reading the final chapters, there was a particular scene I couldn’t get out of my head. It wasn’t one within the book itself, but one that harkened forward to Mockingjay. I can picture Coriolanus Snow, eyes focused on the television as the rebels broadcast another one of Katniss’s propaganda videos. He can tell she’s in District 12, walking amongst the rubble of the decimated mining town. He thinks to turn away from the image of the collapsed Justice building and broken town square... until he hears Katniss begin to sing. His blood runs ice cold, every hair on his body stands on end, and in a hoarse, mangled voice, he begins to wail. Every one of his past sins comes rushing back as Katniss Everdeen unwittingly deals the most devastating blow she could ever give to Coriolanus Snow. It’s a scene that remains completely theoretical, and yet it’s perhaps one of the most powerful images in the entire Hunger Games saga. If you’ve enjoyed the rest of the series, then I urge you to read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

2020 Top 7 (and 1)
2020 am I right? We saw an insane amount of games come out and 2 brand new consoles. What a wild and weird year for gaming, and life in general. In case you are relatively new here, and to be honest that would be completely fair considering I don't post very often on Tumblr anymore, every year going on the last 4 years (on here) I have done a Top 7 (& 1) for my favorite videogames of the year. Check out 2019, 2018, & 2017. What’s wild, as I look back on my list of games that I’ve completed and played, only maybe 10 came out this year. 2020 was a huge backlog year.

Favorite Game that Didn’t Come out in 2020: Control (PS4)

Control may very well have been my 2019 Game of the Year, had I played it in 2019. I LOVED Control. I wanted to play it in 2019, but initial reports that it was a little rough on base consoles put me off until it was fixed. And Holy smokes what an insanely fun and trippy game once I finally started it. I knew within the first 20 minutes this was going to be the shit when I went down a hall, walked into a room and talked to the “janitor” left out a door behind him and the entire building had shifted. I’ve always liked Remedy games, but from a distance. Max Payne 1&2 and Alan Wake all oozed with weirdness and intrigue, but never enough for me to finish them. I missed out on Quantum Break. The story is Control is just the right amount of mind f*!$ for me and builds a universe I didn’t know I needed. It take some time to piece everything together, then everything just clicks. The game does have a weird difficulty spike when fighting bosses and the checkpoints were too far apart at times, but those were later patched. I spent an insane amount of time within the Federal Bureau of Control building and even more time after that with the Foundation and AWE DLC and it STILL wasn’t enough. I wanted more. Outside of Prey, I can’t think of another game that stuck in my brain more after I’d finished it. Control is absolutely a MUST PLAY title. In a world where everything sort’ve feels similar, Control stands out of the crowd.
Number 7: Astro’s Playroom (PS5)

I never thought in my wildest dreams that a game I had almost zero interest in playing would end up on my list of favorite games this year. Astro’s Playroom is being labeled as a ‘Tech demo’ but that feels like an insult to what it is. It’s a full fledged game and its free! I’ve paid more for less. A charming little platformer that lives and breathes the history of the Playstation. So many cool Easter eggs and references. It certainly centers its gameplay around the DualSense controller and everything it can do, but at its core, its a completely approachable and forgiving 3D platformer. I played it just to see what it was about, next thing i knew I had completed all the levels and wanted to further explore all the nooks and crannies within the game. I wanted to see everything the game had to offer and I had an absolute blast doing so. Makes me kinda wish I’d played the previous game on PSVR (I’d have to have a PSVR too)
Number 6: Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5)

Another quality title, albeit a spin-off, from Insomniac to add to their Spider Man universe. Gameplay felt obviously like Spider-Man, but Miles has unique abilities that made the game feel different enough, especially the cloak and stealth. I enjoyed the fact that it was short and concise. The issue with most ‘open-world’ games is that they are entirely too bloated with unnecessary filler content (I’ll get to that in a later game), something I felt the first game suffered from, but I also understand why they are there. However I could’ve use one or two more story missions to help flesh out some characters, but it wasn’t required and didn’t change my opinion one way or the other. My one BIG gripe was with Miles himself. He is an extremely smart young kid, but so incredibly naïve. Peter Parker tells him the one thing he SHOULD NOT do is tell people he is Spider-Man. I get it, that’s part of his growth, but Miles thinks he can just solve his problems by revealing his identity and it almost certainly never works out. 
Number 5: The Last of Us: Part 2 (PS4)

The Last of Us Part 2 may be the most polarizing game in the history of the medium, but for the absolute wrong reasons. I’m in the minority that I very much enjoyed my experience with TLOU2, quite a bit actually. Its better in every single way over its predecessor, except the overall story. There are plenty of fair criticisms to be had about the story and various things within the game itself, but I thought the gameplay was so tight and crunchy. There were genuine moments of suspense and terror that I felt that no other game has ever given me. The entire hospital section (2nd time) was so susensful, I had to put my controller down to gther myself. Some of my favorite moments in the series I experienced with a character I wasn’t overly fond of. How many games can do that? The Last of Us Part 2 was meant to invoke emotion, not necessarily joy. I think that's what people lost along the way. Say what you will about the direction Naughty Dog has taken over the years, but you would be hard pressed to find a studio that makes games graphically better than they do. Yes, I know about their crunch culture, but this is not a place for that. I will say, the game was a tad bit too long, which is not something it typically say for a single player, narrative driven game. The pacing and the way the story was told wasn’t my favorite, but I respect what it was trying to do, even if it failed in some aspect of that, I finished the game within the week it was released. Something I RARELY ever do. I’m a father and I related with Joel a lot in TLOU, but I also recognized how wrong he was. There is a lesson to be learned. Your actions always have consequences and while he was doing what he thought was the right thing, it wasn’t his choice to make, and in doing so set up a series of events that were entirely avoidable, but again, that’s the point isn’t it?
Number 4: Grindstone (Switch)

I’m counting this as a 2020 game since it just came to the Switch this year ( less than a month ago) but its not the first time I’ve played it. Grindstone was the only reason I kept my Apple Arcade subscription and when I let it lapse, there was a void I just couldn’t fill. I bought Puzzle Quest on Switch but it just wasn't the same. Its THE perfect game for bite sized play, even though in its addictive nature, you’ll clear a few levels and an hour has passed before you know it. It has the perfect amount of depth that most ‘match’ games don't. You have different weapons, items, and outfits w/perks to use and experiment with to keep it fresh. I went months without playing my Switch and when this was announced in August, I couldn’t wait! Sadly, I had to wait 3 months, but since then I have spent so much time on the Switch. It gave me a reason to play it again. The art style and humour is great. The variety of enemies and challenge is just right. I can’t recommend it enough. Seriously, check this game out!
Number 3: Doom Eternal (Xbox One)

I will be the first to tell you, I did not like Doom (2016). I found it extremely boring and trite. I understood what Doom(2016) was doing and it succeeded, maybe too much. Nostalgia is a helluva thing. So in saying that, I was mildly interested in Doom Eternal. Doom Eternal is nothing like 2016 outside of it being a Doom game that connects to the rest of them (& also being a sequel to 2016). The mechanics are drastically different with more platforming (for better or worse). Eternal is challenging, at times very hard, especially early on. Eternal has no respect for its players, in a weirdly good way. It laughs at how you’ve played FPS before this one and WILL MAKE you play it its way, not your way. Yes, you point and shoot, but ammo is scare and you MUST use everything in your arsenal. No more using just 2 guns for the whole game. The enemies are relentless. Sometimes you have to pause and take a breath after a battle because you go a 100 mph for the whole fight. You have to continuously move or you die. There is an enticing rhythm to it. I categorize Eternal as ‘Blood Ballet’. Its a game where when your feeling it, much like a rhythm game, you get in the zone and there is no stopping demons from getting slayed. Surprisingly, unlike most games in the genre, it seemed to get easier (sans one extremely frustrating platforming section late in the game) the longer you played it. Was that a testament that I ‘learned’ the Eternal way or it truly did get easier? I don’t know, but the final Boss(es) were....easy.. I had more problems and deaths within the first 4 hours than I did the final 8-9 hours. The multiplayer was also surprisingly fun. The older I get, the less interested I am in multiplayer, but I found myself coming back for more for a good month or so. 
Number 2: Gears Tactics (Xbox One)

As 2020 comes to a close, I came to a stunning realization. I might be a bigger Gears of War fan than I had previously thought. Don’t get me wrong. I love Gears, but I seem to love Gears more than I thought. I'm way more invested into the lore than I recall. Anyways, Gears Tactics is everything XCOM 2 SHOULD’VE been. Not only does Gears Tactics utilize the Overwatch action, its makes it EXTREMELY important. The story revolves around the father of Kait Diaz, Gabe and a ragtag group of mostly random soldiers to take down Ukkon. Anyone who is remotely interested in the Gears universe will love the story and references. The gameplay is just so damn satisfying. The bosses are very challenging and different. I actually had to change my strategy to finish the final boss. I experimented with a totally different style of class and was rewarded for it. The post game stuff is also aplenty. This game scratched a VERY specific itch for me and I’m itchy to jump back in. I’m glad this came to Xbox One because I’m current computer could not run it.
Number 1: Ghost of Tsushima (PS4)

I have a very odd relationship with massive open world games. I love them, but I get very burnt out on them. They all have a relatively same-y formula and are often populated with bloat. GoT does have some of that but to its advantage, its not very populated, in a good way. One of the things that I really appreciated about GoT and its side quest is most of them felt meaningful. The thing that really stood out to me about GoT is the absolutely satisfying combat. It just feels SO GOOD. It requires timing and patience. There are different fighting styles for different enemies and even the armor you wear is more than just cosmetic. The combat is so fun and satisfying that I was immediately excited when they announced Legends, a multiplayer add on, for free. Its so much fun and is a blast to play with a group of friends. I’m sporadically still playing the Legends mode. I initially wanted to play the game in ‘Kurosawa’ mode but I am glad I didn’t because the game, even on the PS4 is stunning, and on the upgrade on PS5 is jaw-droppingly smooth. I did play the entire game in Japanese with English subtitles. I still don't know what Jin’s English voice sounds like. GoT does a good job a drip feeding you new abilities and things to keep things fresh. I love stealth and once I unlocked it, I spent the majority of every battle taking out as many enemies as I could while in stealth mode. Ghost of Tsushima does a lot of things very well, that the few things it doesn’t can be easily overlooked.

Well, it’s finally time that I feel ready to post this, and while I’m aware it may be bittersweet with my upcoming departure, I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Today I present to you a three hour Ches playlist, divided into sections and covering her entire time at Luxor, from when I first picked her up in June of 2019 all the way to now. There’s quite a few plot references, and small (and not as small) references to other muses throughout, especially when it comes to Elliot, so keep an eye out for those as well!
I’d like to thank Lex for giving me the idea to make these, and her support throughout the process because without her, these playlists wouldn’t even exist. And thank you to everyone who has gone on this journey with us, while I’m sorry I need to dip out early after this event to focus on my health, I love y’all so much.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales story and character review
So let’s state a disclaimer, I didn’t like the PS4 Miles character as it was blatantly clear that they never read a Miles story with the actual mistakes they made(Miles going to the wrong school, Rio being a science teacher, Jefferson loving vigilantes/supers, using MJ as an origin for Miles, the skin lightening of both Miles and Rio). It was insulting because they clearly researched and had a fidelity to Peter Parker as they had references from both of the 616 and Ultimate Universes but with Miles, they somehow missed the first thing about Miles: he doesn’t want to be Spider-Man. I didn’t like this version. Notice the past tense.
Miles Morales PS5 redeemed him. I am half-way as I’ve done all of the side quests and pretty much half of the main story. And I also seen the whole main story on YouTube. So yeah.
First off, the first thing I noticed about Miles was his fresh-cut. It was, to quote my brother, “a hot mess” in the first game. I was delighted to hear that the first thing the “black” consultant told the Insomniac developers. His edge was fucked up. Second thing was how social Miles was. Third thing is that they retconned Miles going to Midtown. Yes, in the first thing they did actually have kid in Brooklyn attend a public school in Queens. I am pretty sure in the remaster the changed it to Brooklyn Visions.
These changes along with the fidelity of the relationship between Miles and Ganke were what sold me on this version of the character. I get it. No one wants Peter to die and honestly, they probably should have just used Anya, but Miles is popular now and it’d be stupid to just not capitalize.
So let’s talk about a few characters starting with the actual main character of the game: The Tinkerer.

Let me tell you that at first I thought she was redundant. I am not going to spoil it, but it was obvious the moment she is introduced in the game and Miles mentioned her twice before she is formally introduced. It’s clear that she was the focus. I felt that she was redundant because there is a literal harem of morally dubious women who Miles has a close connection to that she takes aspects from. Tinkerer is an amalgamation of all of them. She is a girl leading a gang(Diamondback/Tomoe) who is a genius inventor(Ceres). She wants revenge against a company that is poisoning the city and killed her brother so she becomes a ruthless vigilante(Tiana). Her powers or devices are that she manipulates a metal to form any shape she wants(Tomoe). Her relationship of Miles is one that is really platonic with some romantic undertones(literally every single person that I mentioned) but it is torn apart because Miles lies and keeps secrets from her(Katie Bishop).
What sold me on her character is the work they did in her collectibles which I implore you to collect because they provide so much depth to her character and also, it doesn’t really bother to explain Miles’ character in this world but hers. This girl is hurt because her loved one was killed and she saw Miles as family or a second brother. They hung out together and as soon as Miles went to Visions, they drifted apart. I’ve always wondered about the kids Miles left in his whole transfer situation and Tinkerer was one of them. Her pathos and identity is very much tied to Miles. And I love her.
Look, at first, I was reluctant to want her in the main comic, but someone put in too much work to not include her in Miles’ main rogues gallery. I hope that Saladin sees it and implements a version of her in the MM: Spider-Man comic. She also reminds me of Gear from Static Shock except she is not a gay white man.
Ganke was spot on. This is the best adaptation of Ganke I’ve seen.

Ganke is part of Miles’ Spider-Man. He is not just the fat Asian kid providing tech support. He is the motivation and is apart of it too unlike the thing they tried to do with MJ and Peter in the first game. This also shows the clear contrast of Peter and Miles. Peter never trusted anyone enough to be that involved in his being of Spider-Man. Miles knows that he can’t do it alone and relies on Ganke for information gathering and webs. Ganke is important and this game nailed it.
Aaron Davis is in this game and no one is surprised. This version of Aaron...is different. Okay in the comics, he is a foil to Miles in that while Miles is becoming more heroic, Aaron is becoming more villainous. It’s no coincidence that Spider-Man and the Prowler look similar but the gist is that if Miles didn’t get bit by the spider, Miles would have become Prowler 2.0. The game eschews this dynamic because it is hard to pull that off after the mangled Miles’ origin so they opted for the Prowler to foil Miles in a different way: keeping secrets from family and friends and being protective of family because fear of loss. Aaron, after losing his brother and never getting a chance to reconcile with him, is hurt and wants to protect Miles and subsequently Rio. Miles, throughout the game, is becoming increasingly worried about his mom running for city council and painting a target on his back. He shows his frustration and distances himself from his mother in his work as Spider-Man. Aaron does the same to Miles when he finds out that he Spider-Man. There comes a point where the two collide and Aaron goes further into the extreme which I won’t spoil. You get it.
This change, while different, isn’t terrible. It’s actually really well thought out. It accomplishes the same thing in that Aaron is not a good role model but he is a good person to Miles. It allows Miles to reflect on his own behavior towards his mother. So I’m with it.
Oh and before I forget, Danika being in this game sold me that they actually started actually researching Miles. They ignored the weird racial commentary that she became enamores and she became a foil to JJJ. A voice of youthful and helpful positivity vs Randian cynicism and skepticism. A social justice activist vs an arrogant self important commentator. And it was fun listening to her. Hopefully Saladin brings her back. I am currently on Underground base liberation missions where she teams up with Ganke and Miles in putting them down. Just started, but there was already some mild hint that Ganke is crushing on her(they are a couple in the comics). So yeah.
The cons because like Ganke, I love pros and cons list. Two things about this game annoys me. First, the move to Harlem and this forced narrative of Miles being Harlem’s Spider-Man made no sense because just look at the map. Harlem is part of Manhattan. There is nothing stopping Peter from visiting Harlem regularly. Brooklyn, however, would justify having their own Spider-Man. As, if you didn’t know, Brooklyn is emerging into becoming the next big city as the area is thriving. Also, gentrification. Point is there is a reason why Miles connection to Brooklyn is important. It is foil to Peter who is from Queens and wanted to move into Manhattan island because part of it was he saw it as a measure of success to get out of the old neighborhood and make it big. Miles loves Brooklyn and doesn’t want to move out. Trying to replicate his love for his city in Harlem just because it’s predominantly black and brown is lazy and honestly if they included Brooklyn in the game, it would have justified the price of this game. Which brings me to the second point.
This game is too short on content to be costing $50 dollars. Just to point out something, all of the DLC from the first game cost 10 bucks a pop and you had as much content in those three expansions as you do this game. Infamous First Light was the same exact thing in relation to Infamous Second Sons and it cost 30 bucks. Uncharted Lost Legacy cost 30 dollars. I could go on. Point is that it shouldn’t have costed nearly the price of a full game when in comparison to the previous iteration, it wasn’t. Now I’ve seen people say that hating because it’s short isn’t warranted or pull up this quoted fact that video games are too long. Anti-consumerist bullshit aside, the difference between the main storyline of the previous game and this one is not repetition. It’s the lack of variety in enemies and deesculating storylines. In the first game, there were a variety of enemies that had their own AI and attacks. And you adjusted accordingly to whom you were facing. There were classes of enemies within the variety. You had the rudimentary common criminal which had 4 classes and how to deal with them and from that point, each enemy afterwards were variations of those four classes and each provided a different challenge. The repetition wasn’t boring because it provided a new challenge. This game only gives you three types of enemies and while 2 are vastly different from anything in the previous game or it’s expansions, the need to limit the series to focus on narrative becomes unwarranted because you are still getting less for nearly the same price.
