Watching Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister is such a roller-coaster of emotions, because on one hand it is a very funny comedy played really well by a very talented cast. But then there's so much warranted cynicism on it. The technological differences between the 80s and now are so stark. So many of the big political issues remain exactly the same (so many timely bits about Russia or Israel and Palestine, military budgets, the US, etc that you could reproduce word for word today). It's an experience.

Yes Prime Minister: The Computer Game (C64/DOS, Oxford Digital Enterprises, 1987/1988)
The game of the British comedy TV series. You can play it in your browser here, and read a digital manual for the C64 version here. For the DOS version, assume all disks are already inserted.
Tip: Sir Humphrey is the Cabinet Secretary. The protagonist, Prime Minister Jim Hacker, loves finishing his sentences.

I also restarted Yes Minister (1980). Such a gem of a show. Sometimes, I relisten to the radio version of the episodes too lol.

Notice how AM glosses over what freedoms are taken away from others to "maximize freedom".
And how he acts like financial freedom is the only freedom. >You can be very rich and powerful, but still less free than some rando<.
Juliet Mike's retort;
simply because some people have more money does not mean you aren't free. Say I want to buy a new car I go out and get a civic you want to do the same and you go get a Ferrari. I'm not less free you just because my budget doesn't allow me to get the same things as you as long as I can get things that make me equivalently happy.
Now as far as the welfare state that depends what you mean by welfare state. If you're talking about a state that provides people out of a job with enough to keep bills payed and bellies full until they find another job, gives them assistance to find their next job and has effective penalties in place for people caught abusing the system then you're absolutely right.
If on the other hand you mean a state that pays just anyone unemployed as much or more than they would make in a job, doesn't encourage or help them to find employment and doesn't punish those caught living off the system for extended periods of time or intentionally avoiding finding other jobs then no, that is a monumental drag on freedom and quality of life.
And someone else, to JM
The key points here are what constitutes a functioning society, and how can that be obtained. This is where you’ll see opinions diverge the most.
You could say that increased taxes on the rich in some part is a tool to restore balance to the welfare of everyone in a society, because it «takes back» some of the riches that were obtained with lobbying and other back room dealings with politicians.
Ah, yes, because it's not like billionaires could possibly be rich by providing a product or service. It's always doing shady things, which they get the money to do by-
Wait.

i got sucked in again by yes minister/yes prime minister help
the characters are some of the worst, most infuriating people that could ever exist, disgustingly self-serving, fully integrated into the ridiculous government machine, representing evil itself at its most boring, banal and terrifyingly apathetic, but they're just so dang likable.
