“guys i dont want a new videographer, memo was the best and i dont think anyone could do what he did” chris says as he sits up from the couch
Nick rolls his eyes at chris’ comment. “chris you're gonna have to get over it because our new one is here in 15 minutes whether you like it or not.”
“maybe you will like him!” matt says trying to brighten the mood, but chris just scoffs and looks away
“matt what, you know its a girl right?” nick says looking at matt with a shocked expression
“really? Well thats good for a change of scenery i guess!” matt replies as he shrugs his shoulders
“this is dumb, i think i would rather stop filming content then get a new videographer”
“okay that is so dramatic get over yourself she’s here in probably 10 minutes now so put on a smile and dont be a bitch” nick snaps back
10 minutes later you arrive at their front door and hesitantly ring their door bell.
ding dong
“chris, how about you go and get the door because you're being such a whiny little baby” nick
“nick i swear to…okay ill do it.” chris sighs loudly as he walks downstairs towards their front door
Chris opens the door slowly to see the most gorgeous girl he has ever seen, the only thing hes thinking is all the things they can do together, but hes quickly taken out of his trance when y/n speaks up.
“hi im y/n! You must be… nick?” you say presumptuously
“h-hi yeah um nick.. I MEAN chris, yes, chris” “nice to meet you, y/n”
You chuckle “well lovley to meet you chris, would you like to take me upstairs to meet the other boys?”
“uhh YES of course i think they would love that” chris speaks up as he takes you upstairs to meet his brothers.
Chris is too stunned to speak properly, nick and matt meet you and they think you are great.
“sorry guys but it was kind of a long drive, would it be okay if i got some water please?”
“yeah no problem ill sort you out and give you a little tour of the place” matt replies walking in the direction of their fridge
“see chris, she doesnt seem bad at all, if anything she seems-”
“like my dream girl, yeah, i know, i dont know what to do” chris blurts out, feeling like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders from the confession.
“um so not what i was going to say but yeah okay! Your gonna have to hold all that in because i don't want you to fuck anything up and make it awkward” “oh god chris why are you sweating, you're gross go change” he says backing away from chris disgustedly
“i dont think that can happen nick but yeah ill get changed..” chris replies, aware of his sweaty clothes
Chris is opening his door with his top only half on
“shit! Oh hi sorry you gave me a shock.. How did you-” chris says as he slightly jumps back from his door frame
“matt said this was your room, i was just coming up to check it out, but that can wait for another time” y/n says apologetically “sorry I came up, that was dumb..”
“no it wasnt..” chris says reassuringly, slightly cutting her off
Your both standing there staring at eachother not knowing what to do, chris takes a slow step forward, you do the same, you continue looking at eachother until you hesitate.
“no, it was dumb, sorry, i will see you downstairs chris” y/n says quietly as she quickly walks away from chris
chris is left standing there wondering if he did anything wrong, guilt clouds his mind but he decides to make his way back upstairs all dressed.
“oh wow how nice of you to finally join us chris!” nick says whilst sarcastically clapping his hands
You are standing near the couch looking at him standing from the top of the stairs
“guys i need to go to the store to get some stomach medicine I'll be back” matt says grabbing his car keys
“matt are you kidding? Can your sore little stomach just wait?”
“no nick, it can't actually wait, that's why i am leaving now”
“god you are annoying, but i know you dont like driving alone so i will come…”
“arent you just a cutie!!” matt says jokingly and walks towards the door
“shut the fuck up or i am not coming, dont make it a big deal lets go”
Chris clears his throat “uhh so will me and y/n just like stay here” he speaks up
You both glance at eachother
“oh um yeah about that-” nick says quietly, only so matt can hear
“yes? What’s wrong with that? Whatever i am leaving now” matt
Nick stares at chris giving him a death stare as he leaves
The door shuts
Youre both sitting there awkwardly waiting for one of you to speak up
Chris breaks the silence “uh y/n… i am kinda sorry about before, i didnt mean to make things awkward”
“no, dont be sorry, i just didnt want your brothers to come up and see that.. But now they are gone.. So"
Chris swallows nervously as he looks at you with lust in his eyes
Tumblr media
10 minutes later
All that can be heard from the living room is groaning and whimpering “mmph chris who knew in the first 30 minutes of knowing you i would be swallowing your dick” you say finally taking a breath
“youre good, a bit too good” chris says moaning “how many other guys have you done this to”
“well lets just say-”
Before you could answer you both here keys screwing into the front door, and faint talking from familiar voices
It opens
You are both staring at each other stuck on what to do as they hear footsteps coming up the stairs
“OKAY WHAT THE FUCK IT HAS BEEN 10 MINUTES CHRIS” nick says covering his eyes dramatically

i need more of your pedri stories pls 🥹 they are my guilty pleasure atm!! can i get sth where they are not dating but in like a joined friend group? and they are always like very close and touchy and all their friends tease them because they all know that they like each other? <3
Kind of (type of way) — Pedri Gonzalez.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Pedri Gonzalez x Fem!Reader
Summary: Everyone seems to know how Pedri and you feel about each other, except for you two. And who were they if they didn’t point it out all the time?
Word count: 719
Disclaimer/s: fluff + teasing!
A/N: idek what to say except im soooo. 😭 sorry these are taking me so long! I’ve been super busy lately!! Needed this after their fucking LOSS yesterday. 😒
Tumblr media
“Well, yeah no that’s not going to work.” You scrunch your eyebrows as you examine the contents on the table. “You got everything except the actual main ingredients, such as chocolate chips.”
Your friend purses her lips, “oh. See I knew I was forgetting something..” She rubs the back of her neck, “okay, well.. so like—“
“Hey guys! So, no cookies for today! Sarah forgot to grab the chocolate chips.” You give a tight lipped smile, rounding the table to find the rest of your friends in the living room.
A chorus of groans erupt throughout the room, heads tilting back in disappointment. “I’m sorry! It’s not even my fault—“
Laughing lightly, you plop down onto the open seat beside Pedri, shooting him a quick grin as his arm loops around your shoulder. Subconsciously, you lean into his touch, shifting to find a more comfortable position.
It had always been like this. You near Pedri and him pulling you closer. You always tried to avoid thinking too hard on the way your stomach tightened at the gesture. You couldn’t allow yourself to think that way. He is your best friend.
But nobody else seemed to get that memo. Their lips tugging into grins as they watch Pedri’s fingers rub delicate little patterns into your exposed arm. The faintest hint of a smile he held every time you were in hid vicinity. The way it grew every time you looked in his direction before quickly looking away.
It was very noticeable to everyone around how you two felt about each other.
“Geez, pull her any closer why don’t you.” Gavi quips, earning daggers from the boy beside him. You’d barely registered what he was saying before Pedri’s mouth opened.
“Shut up.” He rolls his eyes, though his grip loosens around you anyways.
Oookay.. awkward! Now everyone was really looking at you two. Eye’s rolling to the back of your head, you brace yourself for the roll in’s of everyone’s input.
Laughter emits from the rest of the group, “clutching onto her like she’s going to leave him for another man. She’s all yours big bro.” Your younger brother grins proudly at his own joke, which you did not enjoy.
It was one thing for your friends to point it out, but when it came from your younger brother.. “isn’t it past your bedtime?” You scowl, eyes flickering to the clock that read; 9:37 PM.
Alex’s smile falters. “Very funny.”
“No, can we actually talk about how insane this is? Like, if I didn’t know you guys, i’d assume you were dating. That’s so not normal.” Sarah points in your direction, motioning between the two of you.
Pedri, now finding it amusing how your face flushed so deeply, so prominently, it was hard not to notice. “Chill out, they are just messing with us.” His arm bend, using his hand to ruffle your hair.
Not. Helping.
“Yeah, yeah.” You huff, perching your legs up on the coffee table as you lean back into his side. Your friends share knowing looks but drop the teasing for your sake.
The topics change, but your mind is stuck on Sarah’s words. ‘It’s not normal.’ And it wasn’t. Nothing about the way you two acted was normal.
Pedri, sensing your mood shift instantly, watched your face grow more and more confused. Your eyebrows tugging together, your tongue pressing out your lips as they pulled together, your slow blinking.
“Hey?” He shakes your arm once, squeezing it lightly to gain your attention.
Just like that, you snap out of it. Eyes snapping towards him and lips forming a small smile. “Yeah?”
“They’re just teasing… don’t let it get under your skin.” He assures you, smile matching your own, if not brighter. His eyes dart around your face, trying to catch a stray wrinkle that would tell him what you were thinking.
The small look of worry that flashes across his face made your heart thump. “Teasing. Right.” You nod, using your hand to give Pedri’s, that was rubbing your arm, a small squeeze.
In that moment, something changed in Pedri’s eyes. Something about the way he was looking at you… it was different. Yet it told you all you needed to.
It wasn’t wrong to like him, love him, because he loved you right back.

Howdy! I was wondering what the twst guys would do if apocalypse mc came to twisted wonderland with a rifle and handgun? Like rook learning they can be used for hunting or lilias reaction to the weapons of war from their world
You don’t have to write this! I’ve just been brainrotting about this 😮‍💨
Anyway thanks for your time!💕💕
I really need to add a character limit to this.
I'm doing one from the first 5 dorms and if you want more characters I'll get to them once requested open again.
FEM ALIGNED DNI
Yuu pronouns are he/him
Characters: Ace (technicallyduece too ig), ruggie, jade, kalim, and rook
Warnings: Dueces slight suicidal ideation, ruggies lowkey nihilism, you kill a monster in Jades part, slight body horror in Kalims part, not proof read
________________________________
Ace:
Ace was pissed. Why? Because he was fucking stupid.
He was stupid. Duece was stupid. And that weird kids with the weird mask and the fucking fire monster was fucking stupid.
Because someone thought it would be a great idea to run away from their clean up duty (Grim (ace quietly chose to ignore that he had tried to do the same thing first)) by hiding in a chandelier was a good idea, and someone else thought hurling him into said chandelier with questionable at best magic was an even better idea.
So now ace trappola was running for his life in a crystal mine, with only the same people who got him into this situation in the first place here with him.
These feelings only seemed to be amplified after duece decided that the crystals were worth more than his life! Also it didn't exactly help that he had seen the magicless guy almost get impaled with one of the oversized pickaxes that...that thing was swinging around.
"My....m.y..Give me back..my. STONES"
The adrenaline rushed through aces body like a wave, it's only purpose being to make sure he survives dammit! He doesn't even care if he gets expelled anymore. His brother has told him enough stories about NRC to write a novel. Ace had come here with a picture already painted in his head and this was not it.
He made a sharp turn left. They had walked down this tunnel on their way in right?
He saw a little light poke out just around the next turn.
Yeah, they had come through this way.
Ace heard a small yelp and the sound of dirt being scattered and a small thud of someone hitting the ground.
He didn't look back. He just kept running.
He kept running until he came across the small cottage that they'd gone into earlier. Duece stumbled in right after him. The masked boy and the fire cat-weasle thing on his shoulders.
The guy was covered in dirt. He's probably the one that fell.
Ace was bent over, panting like he had just ran for his life, probably because he did, but he's pretty sure he heard duece half gently set the kid, whose name he still didn't really know, down before he joined ace in his desperate attempt to catch his breath.
Ace closed his eyes. What the hell is happening right now? Why was he here? Why did he have to go tease that weird magicless freak this morning and pick a fight with their freaky cat?
You know what? Fuck this. If he gets expelled, so be it. There are plenty of other magic schools, including ones closer to home. He'll be just fine.
Duece however, didn't seem to get the memo.
"It was right there...we have to go back!", duece had so much determination in his voice...
Ace felt his eye twitch. "Like hell we do!"
Duece snapped his head towards him, and the mystery bro was still sitting on the floor, now cradling grim like he was an actual cat.
"Yeah, no. Sorry, but that crystal ain't worth it"
"So...so you're just gonna take the expulsion lying down? Just like that!? What are you, some kind of coward!?", duces voice got progressively more angry, which ace thought was bullshit.
He thought he was being perfectly reasonable with his choices, thank you very much.
"Uhhh. Yeah! Sorry not sorry, I choose life!"
I mean sure, his brother is gonna look at him all disappointed and shit, but hey, at least he'd be alive to see it.
Ace looked back at Mr. Mask-Man, who was still quietly petting grim, acting like they weren't even there.
It kind of pissed him off a little.
"Hey", he looked up, Ace count see their eyes, but somehow he knew they weren't making eye contact "do you have any better ideas? Or are you just gonna sit there the while time and not do anything?"
Was he being unfair? Probably. This guy (he should really ask for his name) wasn't even supposed the be in night Raven college, not to mention here? And he probably didn't want to be here any more than he did.
Did he care about that though? No. Not right now anyway.
Ace expected him to just put his head back down and go back to petting his freaky weasel. He expected them to just shrink up on themselves while ace went back to yelling at duece.
He did expect the guys head to perk up the smallest bit, he didn't expect the sudden feeling of very intense eye contact either.
And he definitely didn't expect him the nod and stand up so fast ace almost stumbled back.
But you know what the absolute last thing he expected from this guy? Going back to the mines.
Going back to the mines and waiting with duece for grim and the masked guy to come hauling ass back up the hill with the ...inky monster in tow. Because that's what's going to happen. Apparently.
...fuck. This guy was some type of maniac wasn't he?
Ace just glared at the ground. There wasn't anything he could do about it now, but he was still gonna be pissed if he died with a possible psychopath currently running towards him, and this blue gumball son of a bitch standing next to him.
"Bring me....my...stooones!"
He took a deep breath, possibly one of his lasts.
But I mean hey, might as well go out with a bang right?
The next few minutes all seemed to happen in slow motion, and somehow ace could already see the moment when the reality of all this would all hit him. At 3 am or something like that. Probably.
...yeah. 3 am.
"Ace watch out!", a panicked, exhausted voice called out to him. Probably duece.
His head snapped over to where his dormmate was. What's happening?
The answer seemed pretty damn obvious, when a large shadow seemed to swallow him whole, a product of the monsters looming stature.
Ace froze. Seeing his life start to flash before his eyes. Memory after memory replaying in his mind.
You never really know how little you've lived until you see it all right in front of you...
BAM.
Aces eyes shot open (when had he closed them?) To see Mr. Mask standing just roughly six meters away from him, holding a...
...uh....what the hell was that?
BAM. BAM. BAM.
The loud noises rang out one by one. One right after the other.
Ace booked it to the side, trying to catch his breath.
Only for it to get caught again once he looked up.
The creatures head, the glass ink jar, was leaking. It had six small holes in it, and cracks spiderwebbing out from said holes. As the cracks grew larger, the glass began to break off, and more and more ink began to pour out.
"Duece!"
Aces eyes snapped to their third member, who responded immediately with another cauldron.
The head finally shattered. And the monster disappeared.
Slowly, aces gaze fell on the Ramshakle resident once again. Blinking slowly as he watched the guy put the...loud..thing away, before picking up grim once again.
Ace opened his mouth, and before he could even begin to realize what he was doing, he asked, "what was that?"
You called it a gun.
Ruggie:
Listen. Ruggie wasn't new to violence. You can't live in the slums all your life and make it out completely sheltered, no matter how hard your parents try.
And sure. Ruggie wasn't exactly a saint himself, But at this point, was anyone? He certainly didn't think so.
Yeah. Almost getting killed by leona fucked him up a little. But really, it wasn't that new when he really thought about it.
And yeah, leona never really apologized to him for all that, but at times like that, in an environment like savanaclaw? He didn't need to. His actions, no matter how small they were, still spoke for themselves.
So yeah. Ruggie bucchi has a lot of experience with violence.
But if you were to ask ruggie if he's ever seen anything like this before? Yeah. He'd have to answer no.
Everything was going shit. They were following the plan, he did his part flawlessly might he add, and then Azul decided he didn't want to follow the script. So now he was surround by black ink, panicking students, and slightly less panicking... allies? Allies.
But yeah. This sucked.
And so began the fight for his life once again. Honestly, this shit was getting old.
Whipping his head in every which way to look or for flying debris and tentacles (and wasn't that a sentence), and keeping his ears open for shouted commands and warnings, his attention landed on you for half a second, before quickly turning away; In that half second he saw you pull something out from jacket pocket.
About five seconds later, he heard a loud bang.
And not like when the construction workers accidentally drop a metal beam on concrete or something. No, this was just a loud, earth shattering bang that demanded attention. And attention it got.
Several heads snapped to you, holding a...uhhh. You tilted your head to the side, either in confusion or trying to get an angle on Azul.
BANG BANG
And then there was a scream, distorted and pained, with a faint sound of gushing and sloshing, a liquid being spilled. Ink being spilled out of the overblot phantoms head.
"Huh...the other one just died immediately..", he heard you mutter.
Ruggie shot a pointed look over to leona, who just looked at him in confusion. Ok. So he didn't miss anything during his housewardens little episode. He took a quick glance at the heartslabyul duo, who looked like they understood. Well, Ace understood. Duece wasn't close enough to hear and didn't have the hearing to pick up the slack.
Ok. So maybe yuu also decided to whip the thing out when riddle when crazy? He'll ask around later. Probably.
A tentacle slammed right next to him and started writhing around with another loud scream as the phantom lost more and more ink, and Ruggie remembered where they were.
The damage you did the overbloted octopus wasn't enough to downright defeat him, but it was enough to at least make the rest of the way a hell of a lot easier. So they're odds were looking much better than they were. Small mercies.
When everything eventually came to a head and the ink was beginning to melt off of Azul and he could finally breathe, he let his mind drift back to you.
Ok. What the hell. What was that? Why did it make that noise? What did it even do? How'd it shatter thick ass, magic glass? Did it launch blades at it or something? Also, why are you pretending like this whole thing was completely normal?
You weren't freaking out about this, you honestly seemed more focused on combing the gunk out of Azuls hair with your gloved fingers while the twins tried to asses his mental state, grim flopping on the ground off to your side. Now, this is probably your third, or maybe even fourth time you've been in this situation. But perfect, you treating it like it's just another Tuesday isn't exactly. Uh. Normal?
Not that you were normal, you had just began taking regular baths, which he was immensely grateful for. Seriously, he could only hold back leonas hair as he puked so many times before it got old. But even your (lack of) personality raised a few questions. Sometimes he wondered if you where really even there half the time.
After he caught his breath, he began to walk over to where you were, Ace and duece now scolding you and jade trying to check if you were hurt or not, and holy shit that is a big ass gash.
But he was already standing right behind you, so he honestly might as well ask.
"Hey. So uh. What did you do? What made the bangs?"
Your head snapped in his direction, pausing to just stare at him for a few unnerving seconds.
And then you pulled something out and called it a gun.
Jade:
Jade didn't really question why you wanted to join his club, he was just glad someone did. Even if that someone was a fucking weirdo like yourself.
Listen, jade wasn't picky when it came to his clubmembers ok?
Plus, aside from a few conversations about a bird or plant species you liked, and many more questions about basic things that you had apparently never seen before, and him acting like he knew any better than you about it, things went smoothly.
He collected his mushrooms and occasionally stopped to do a fieldsketch and you rolled around in moss and somehow became an instant bird whisperer. It was a good system.
About as good as it could be while you were running from a big ass monster.
Ok. Listen. He knew that there were monsters on this particular mountain, and he knew that some of them were man eaters. But dammit he did the research before hand! He made sure the two of you avoided their natural habitats at all cost! But apparently, this particular one could smell human blood much better than the rest, and apparently, you thought it was a good idea to not tell him you had cut yourself on a rock and were now bleeding.
"There's a cave right there!", he saw you point to an opening in a rock wall that was most definitely the small least cave he'd ever seen "do you think we could hide in it for a minute"
"I don't know!", you didn't really have any other options, running forever until you reached the place where the mirror had dropped you both off was more than inconvenient, especially on a mountain that had more steep cliffs than average. So he quickly signaled to you and began running towards it, awkwardly running into the small hole and barely seeing you baseball slide your way into there with much more ease.
Desperately trying to catch his breath, he started to plan. You only had a few minutes at best before the monster caught up to you, so the best thing they could do with the time they had was treat your wound to the best of his ability, and hope that the smell of blood would gradually fade and the beast would be thrown off your trails.
Click
He looked to you, hunched over and sill slightly panting as you loaded small, but long pointed metal cylinders into...something?
You had stopped wearing the mask, being one of the few people you trusted enough to see your face, which was sweet if he thought about, you were even getting better to look at! Looking a lot less like you had come back from the dead after the apocalypse and more like a recovering drug addict, but hey! Progress!
But he point is, he could see your face, and the look on your eyes, and...
Ah shit.
Perfect. Listen perfect, he knows you're batshit crazy, he is too, but please, you're going to get them killed. Even with your insane amount of luck, your half baked plans only work most of the time so for the love of the sea witch please just-
"I have an idea"
...Dammit.
So that's how you both got here, kneeling just barely out of the cave opening, and him standing on the Rocky formation right above you outside the cave. Waiting for the monster, and possi ly for death. If he survives this the first things he'd doing when he gets back to his dorm room is write his will so that he can make sure his precious mushrooms aren't thrown away by his brother. Would riddle accept them?
"Jade!"
He blinked, got his magic pen ready, and you cocked your gun. Staring at the place where the sound of heavy footsteps and snarls were coming from.
You both waited with baited breath as themonsters form came running up the steep hill and charged towards the two of you.
The sensation of water and earth magics filled the air as spell after spell was released, hitting the creature a good majority of the time. Meanwhile, you were shifting slightly, getting into a position that didn't look the most comfortable, but apparently it worked for you because you quickly gave him a small warning shout.
Jade covered his ears. You had warned him about the sound guns make, and how many people went deaf fro them due to lack of proper equipment and training, you sounded like you were repeating a quote that was all but drilled into you, a saying that everyone knows but never really says out loud. Did he belive you were exaggerating? Slightly.
That went away when he heard the loud boom though, even through his covered ears. Jade grew slightly concerned at the fact that you didnt seem to be too affected by all this.
You didn't seem too surprised at the loud noise. Just angling and adjusting the gun position until you could hit your target more accurately as it moved.
He heard ten shots go off. Out of those ten, at least seven actually hit. The monster, being as huge as it was, was about to ignore the first three. The rest, however, were clearly starting to take a toll on the thing.
He saw you pull the trigger a few more times, nothing more than assumed clicks coming out. Jade couldn't be too sure, as the pained roars of the monster completely drowned out the sound. Wordlessly, he got took his hands away from his ears and readied his magic. Letting it burst all around him and borage the monster as soon as your hand shot up into the air. The signal that you needed to reload and he had to momentarily take over.
The whole event took about fifteen minutes that felt like they were stretched into hours. Ending with him feeling a bit lightheaded, and you firing three extra shots into what he was pretty sure was a monstrous corpse. "Just in case".
Wanting to sit down and take a moment to collect himself was only just outweighed by the urge to make sure you were alright. So, jade jumped down from his little rock podium; he reached the ground just as you completely crawled out of the cave entrance.
Gently, he asked, "are you alright perfect?". A perfectly appropriate question to ask after...that.
To which you, in reply, completely flop down on the rough ground and let out a loud groan, both of you pretending that there wasn't a dead, three-metter tall monster right next to you.
An equally appropriate response.
"Four magazines jade! Four! I'm going to have to make soany bullets now!", jade only nodded, like how you do when he starts ranting about his beloved mushrooms.
Oh well, he'd understand soon enough. He has plenty of questions regarding you and you gun for the walk back to the mirror location.
Kalim:
Kalim felt like was caving in on him.
This was all happening so fast, way too fast. The one person that he thought he could trust whole heartedly, the boy he saw as nothing less than a brother, had done all this.
It was a lot to take in. Everything from his supposed verdict of keeping his dorm members in school, to yuu and grims vague comments, comments that he now recognizes for the warnings they were, to the guys from octavinnle, jamil overblotting, getting flung to the dessert, and now to be back here? Fighting for not only his, but his best friends (were they though?) Life?
Kalim just wanted to cry. The drop the the floor and cry. But he'd already done that and there was no time to do it again now. Not when he could see the ink and the snakes sucking out more and more of jamils life, when he could see jamils body begin the break down and contort in ways that shouldn't be possible. Not when his eyes grew more deranged with every second.
No, Kailm couldn't cry now. Not when Jamil was dying.
Magic attacks meeting the emotions of dread and rage that jamil had kept professionally buried only served made the air more tense. Yuu occasionally shouted directions from he sidelines, directions to use fire magic instead of water, or to dodge an incoming attack that very well could have killed him if it made contact.
And that just raises the question. Did jamil..? Was it his intention to kill him? Was that his goal the entire time?
....No. No, if Jamil wanted Kailm dead, then Kailm would be dead. He didn't want Kailm gone he just wanted him to go away. And for that reason, Kailm had the hope that he needed that he could fix this. And by the seven he'll cling to it for as long as he lives if that's what it takes.
"Perfect!", Jades sharp voice took Kailm right out of his thoughts.
"Yeah? Kailm move to the right!", he moved to the right, just in time for a borage of ink and thron covered vines to come crashing into the exact spot he was standing not even five seconds prior. The vines writhing around like they were alive, and he could see the sharp, jagged edges of its thorns cut into its self with the ease of cutting through soft butter. Not that he would know. "What do you need?"
"Do you have your gun?", Jade svoice was deathly calm, which was a bit jarring all things considered.
He didn't know what a "gun" was, but he guesses floyd knew, because he groaned louder than some of his youngest siblings when they had to get up early.
From out the corner of his eye, he saw you stop for a few seconds. Then you answered.
"Yeah", something in your voice that he couldn't quite read. "Yeah, but I only have like five shots"
Both jade and azul looked less than pleased with that, and Kailm still didn't know what was going on, so he just threw more fire at his friend.
"Well then. You better make them count", azuls matter of fact voice rang out.
He didn't see if you nodded or not. And for the next minute, he didn't hear you at all. There were no more instructions being shouted or anything like that. Just the continued onslaught of four peoples magic, all trying desperately to snap Jamil out of his current state. Who was being bent into more and more inhuman shapes as the seconds passed.
His jaw was opening a little too wide as he laughed, his fingers seemed to be getting longer and more claw like, and his voice was so now so distorted that he could barely even understand what he was saying.
But what freaked him out the most what the loud cracking and crunches of bones breaking. Jamils spine now seemed too long, bent in an unnatural way, accompanied by a crack everytime he moved. He only laughed.
Kalim didn't laugh. There was ink running down his body, all from where he had been contorted. And as time crawled on, his eyes grew more and more crazed, and his distorted laughs turned more like screams.
Kalim wasn't the best at magic, he had never been the best at magic, he knew that, even before now. So when he felt himself become light headed as his energy and magic supply ran low, he started to panic.
Oh no. Oh sevens, oh no. Please no. Not now. Anytime but now. He couldn't lose now. What would happen to jamil? How would he get Jamil home after this?
How was he supposed to tell Jamils family that their son and brother was dead?
BANG
A distorted scream ran out as floyd began to cheer, and his stomach dropped.
BANG BANG BANG
More screams. Blood curdling screams that froze Kalim where he stood. Watching jamils face begin the crack, ink pouring through the cracks on his face like blood as his eyes rolled back and his entire expression turned to one of pain. A perfect mirror to the shattering phantom that loomed behind him.
"I have one shot left and I am not wasting it! Aim for the cracks! Use fire! It'll weaken the glass!", your voice rang out, carrying a determination with it, but also the reality that they were in no way out of the woods yet.
"You mean the magic glass?", azul was skeptical
"Its magic fire", Kailm could hear the shrug in your voice.
Kalim is ashamed to admit it. But he wasn't much help after this. Jamils vpice had random breaks from the distortion. So he had a perfect audio of jamil screaming his vocal cords raw in his actual voice. Something that would haunt him until the day he died.
Ink was still pouring out from his wounds. Bones were still breaking. And it almost looked like Jamils body was melting off of him in a grotesque manner.
Kalim closed his eyes and prayed.
Eventual, the distortion completely went away, so the screams and the sobs seemed less monstrous and more tortured. Jamils attacks completely stopped as well.
And with one final bang, so did yours.
When Kalim opened his eyes again, I was only after jade prayed his hands off his ears, something he doesn't even remember doing.
Azul and yuu were standing over jamils blood covered body, and for a second, he feared the worst.
It was only after you kneeled to check if he was still alive, and he saw Jamil moving did he allow himself to breathe, and to finally cry.
Through blurred vision, he saw you put the gun away. He never asked what it was. He didn't need to know. You saved Jamils life with it, and that was good enough for him.
Rook:
Rook enjoyed beanfeast. Honestly, he could say it was one of his favorite days of the year. What other time? What other opportunities would he get but this? To hunt his fellow classmates for sport like this? To see their determination wither away as they accepted their fates as his prey!
Now, normally rook would go solo on this. Others found it a bit hard to keep up with him until now. Until yuu.
Ah his dear little trickster and his admirable kill or be killed mentality that he had taken up as of late! My, when rook had looked into his eyes, he saw nothing less than the eyes of a killer! A tiger on the hunt!
Or perhaps, he mused, a lion. Because there, right underneath them, was leona kingscholar himself.
Yuu has proposed they move from above, to stay in the wooded area and maintain the high grounds. Yuu had made his way up a tree with the swiftness and elegance of a bird taking flight! Walking steadily along the branches like he was simply made for it.
Together, the two of you had taken out quite a few farmers. With rook silently stalking them and you communicating your predictions with hand signals that he could understand blind. Those predictions of what the farmers would do, or even who would be in the area were proven true to an uncanny extent.
Rook wanted to know how, but that conversation could be saved for a different day.
Rook could barely see you chest rising up and down as you breathed so slowly you might as well haven't have been. He himself was holding his breath as you both angled your bean blasters. The slightest noise could tip the beastman off, after all.
You had temporarily split off to different trees, him being about a dozen meters away from you, just to the left of Leona, while we're were to the right.
He saw you hand slowly raise up, carefully avoiding the rustling leaves as you gave another hand signal. Thos one being significantly more simple than the majority. Just three fingers raised to indicate three seconds. Three seconds and you both shoot. You closed you hand, starting the timer.
Three.
The two of you, perfectly in sync, found your final aims of the beastman.
Two.
You carefully placed your fingers on the trigger. Taking caution not to shoot too early. The last thing would want to do was ruin this seemingly special moment for the two of you.
The wind blew in you direction. Thre leaves began to rustle, and leonas head shot in your direction.
Three.
You both pulled your triggered in perfect harmony, and, like a beautiful dance coming to an end, the mighty lion had fallen. And you both ran across the tree branches, making your ways to eachother as soon as possible.
The happy, adrenaline filled giggle you let out when he finally found found you again was nothing less than precious. Not to mention it fit the moment. Oh how he wishes you would stop trying to compose yourself all the time! The world deserves to see your joy!
He let out a laugh of his own, being rewarded with a smile that you couldn't help. This imagine of you in perfect juxtaposition with how you looked upon first arrival to this world.
And, if he may, rook would like to say that your face was shaping up to be something he wouldn't mind staring at. Ah, recovery was a marvelous thing indeed! He couldn't wait to see your progress by the end if the year.
When the laughter subsided, you took you hand and laid a gentle kiss to the back of your fingers, as a small congregation and a job well done.
"Yes, very nice monsieur. That was very nice indeed", his soft voice suddenly taking on a more mischievous note to it, a not that you matched with those shinning eyes of yours. "Now, I belive we have more game to secure, yes? Let us be off, my dear trickster"
You smiled, the corners of your mouth moving into a smirk. Your eyes, however, he'll the glee of a giddy boy, finally getting to experience something he was robbed of long ago. Rook only hoped that much later in your life, when you think of how many shots you've ever fired, this day will be included.
So smile, dear trickster, that all he asks. That's all you deserve.

"god kyle did you not get the memo were going to the waterpark not the airport🙄" "WELL CARTMAN I WAS JUST TRYING TO LOOK OUT FOR YOU GUYS LOOK AT YOURSELVES YOU GUYS DIDN'T EVEN BRING A SINGLE TOWEL" "thanks for bringing us stuff mom ilysm🥰" "yeah yeah whatever let's just start walking" when you guys get there for some reason kenny and cartman BROUGHT A WHOLE ASS SPEAKER??? *random song playing on speaker* "AW DUDE WTH YOUR EMBARRISING US" "BITCHHH TURN THAT SHIT DOWNN😭" *kyle grabs the speaker and throws it into an "empty" pool* (rip to the kid who was in the pool) "come on stan and y/n lets go swim, but first we gotta put on sunscreen" "bro think's he's the main character💀" "im gonna fucking kill him" "bro thinks he's the villain 💀" your guys favorite thing to do at the waterpark is the slides for sure. or should i say it's you and kenny's favorite thing to do. Three Idiots
Part 1 of Three Weeks
Part 3 - Three Hopes
(W/N: I am very sorry for abandoning you guys, it's just some tough shit decided to wreck my life and I just finished this while crying about the said tough shit. Anyways, have fun with this part xoxo.)
Tim takes back his words.
He wants to go back to Japan ASAP.
Might be asking, why? He once said that he can stay in Gotham for three weeks. But this bloody family makes him want to stab them. Dick always looks at him and hugs him more often than not. Jason sneaks an arm to wrap to his waist. Damian just drags him to the music room that was also now converted to Portrait Room with all of the portraits Damian paints but the grand piano still sits on the corner.
He wants to go back to the damn winter fields of Hokkaido and probably have some hot cocoa and go buy some soba. But all of this suckrifices, yes suckrifice, for Cass and if she and Stephanie divorces, he will hunt Stephanie and probably make her lose one of her four limbs, or two depending on his mood, because his anger will probably dissipated by the time he already tear her two limbs.
Dick has always and always been a cuddler. Who knows where he bloody got those arms but he is not digging information, he is retired from that shit. Jason is a sneaky little bastard whenever he wraps his arm to his waist, almost possessively. And what is he even proving that Tim is his? His, to slit Tim’s throat? And Damian, the little (not that little anymore because he is now taller than Bruce, fucking biology and genetics) shit just drag him like a damn sack of rice and he is not appreciating any second of it.
He unpacked his things and already changed into a more comfortable red cashmere turtleneck, yellow scarf and blue earmuffs as he planned to go to the Drake Manor. He knows that he practically abandoned the place but he still hire Mrs. Mac to clean it, but she retired three months ago, to rest her gracious old body and now he needs a new caretaker and it will sucks since the Drake Manor is still filled with some of the artefacts that his parents, illegally, bring back and  he actually likes some of it, and he cannot afford to let those things to be stolen. So, he planned on cleaning some of the manor while visiting it. And maybe hire someone to take care of it.
He was about to go out of the Wayne Manor, when Jason suddenly spawn before him. How are we sure that he is not a meta? Or am I just really rusty? “Hello, Jason.” he greeted as he walked past the man but Jason seemed like didn’t get the memo that he didn't want to talk to him, as the man grabbed his wrist and made him go back to where he was.
“Where are you going, Timbo?” Jason asked as he looked at Tim’s outfit.
“Outside.” He shrugged at the bigger man.
“It's 45 degrees outside.” Jason reasoned but Tim lives in Hokkaido.
“And in Japan, it hits ‘til 35. I’ll live, Jason.” He waved to the man and restarted his walk to the door.
Jason gripped gets tighter, “Uh, nuh uh, Timmerly. You stay here.” he said as he dragged him back.
“Ugh, Jay! I will be next door, so calm your paranoia, seriously you are being a Bruce like now.” he whined, where is Alfred when he needs him? Oh yeah, right. Never.
“Did you just use Bruce as a verb? And I am very offended by that.” Jason scoffed.
“Then let me go to my childhood home, hmm?” he smiled, a smile filled with ‘let me fucking go’.
Jason didn’t get it because he said, “Wait for me, I’ll be dressed in 5.”
“You are not…” and the man was already out of his sight, he sighed, “...invited.” he rolled his eyes.
He starts contemplating whether or not to wait for Jason but then he decides that he doesn’t want to know any of the consequences of his actions so he decides to wait for the man. He pulled his phone out and started to scroll to his Instagram, not Twitter, he doesn’t like how aggressive Twitter can be. He is laughing silently at one of the relatable reels when he sees Jason in the corner of his eyes.
He didn't say anything as he went to the door and let Jason follow him.
“You are not gonna talk to me while we take this 15 minute walk, TimTam?” Jason asked as he caught up with Tim, and Tim ignored him.
“Hey, Timmy TimTam, talk to me.” he whined, holy shit is he being a Dick right now?
“If you want someone to talk with, you can go and talk to Bruce,” he said.
“And what? Let the two of us have an awkward staring contest?”
“Maybe, or go talk to Dick. Maybe it will improve your social skills, Mr. Todd.”
“Nah, I'd rather die again than to have a talk with Dickie.”
“Where is he anyways?”
“He is in Wayne Enterprise to pissed Damian off, he said it was his duty as an older brother.”
“I wonder if he will still have his limbs still intact.”
“Maybe. But then it was Dickie so probably he will.”
They got to the driveway of the Drake Manor and the snow piled as no one swept the snow. He tried to walk over the snow but he was suddenly carried like a sack of potatoes and Jason started to move like a tractor and no, Tim is not envious.
“Stop pouting, Timmy. It’s not your fault you are small.”
Tim hit him, “I am not small, I am average, above average actually, you and your family are just giants.”
“Where is the key?” Jason said as he stepped to the porch of the Drake Manor.
“I have it with me.” Tim said as he tried to get the key inside his back pocket while still being carried like a sack of potatoes by Jason. But Jason beat him to it since Jason already got the key to his back pocket and opened the door of the manor with one hand.
Jason put him down after he opened the door. Dust accumulated everywhere after three months of not being clean.
“You need something around here, Timbo?” Jason said as he looked around the dusty Manor.
“No, I just planned on hanging around here and maybe cleaning. I really need someone to clean the manor.”
“Why not just sell it? Maintenance is an expensive thing to do in this type of house."
“And let the only connection towards my parents be gone? Don’t be ridiculous, Jason.” Tim rolled his eyes at the dumb idiot in front of him.
“You still consider them family? Really, Timmerly?” Jason snickered, definitely remembering the talk of how shitty Tim's parents are.
Tim clenched his fist, ‘It’s not fucking worth it, Timothy. Don’t waste your breath on that shit.’ He thought and just calmly replied, “They love me, Jason. Not like how Bruce loves his sons, but my mother loves me and my father loves me. I know of it.” he said with so much grace.
“Still, your parents are kind of shitty —” Jason is still trying to fight his narrative. After all, he also has shitty parents. Maybe Tim and him can bond over those facts.
“Jason.” Tim interrupted him, “If you are not gonna help me clean or dust the furniture, get out. I don’t need you.”
Jason brings his hand onto the air as a sign of surrendering and asks Tim if he knows where the cleaning supplies are.
The two start on cleaning, mainly just dusting around, since no one actually makes a mess to an unlived house. Seconds of cleaning turn into minutes turn into hours. They didn’t know how long they were cleaning until Jason told him it was past lunch time. Tim looks at his watch with the reading of 2:14, they have been cleaning for almost 4 hours.
“Let’s go, Timberina. Alfred probably makes some kickass soup.” Jason said as he put away the cleaning supplies and dragged Tim back to Wayne Manor, before even Tim could protest.
++++++++
Four days in Gotham and his sanity is already giving up.
Jason is being a bitch, Dick is being a jerk, Bruce is being overprotective, Cass and Steph are being a couple, Alfred is making s’mores, and Damian is being… non-Damian.
Wherever he goes and if Damian is in the Manor, he is always in Timothy’s peripherals. He considered smacking the man but he rather not wanted to die seventeen days before Cass’ wedding. He wants to see his sister walk down the aisle.
Damian though is not behaving what he was like seven years ago, which is good. Tim doesn't want this beast to throw knives at him at any given moment, he may have years of training but all of them are pretty much useless as he doesn’t use them anymore.
The thing is that Tim hates how everyone just kept on observing him, goddammit. It is his job to observe anyone, not to let anyone observe him, unless they will get him laid.
So when Tim was cleaning his camera to take some pictures to add in his personal portfolio, he can’t have Damian lingering into his visions.
“You know it’s creepy to stare at someone, right?” He called Damian out while cleaning the lenses. He wanted to focus because these lenses are so sensitive but Damian is just taking out all of his concentration and it is frustrating every single nerve he has.
“Tt. I am not staring at you.” Damian replied and walked closer to Timothy and sat next to Timothy. Still actively watching the man to clean his lenses.
“Sure, you don’t.” Tim rolled his eyes. He  may be out of this game for so long but he is still very much able to detect lies.
“I am not, clear your mind, Timothy.” Damian said as he tucked a stray hair off Timothy’s face, noticing the light sheen of red in the black locks.
“What do you want, brat?” Timothy asked as he set down the camera lens he was holding and looked at the huge behemoth in front of him.
“I see that you are preparing to take photos, and I am offering a proposition to paint with you.” Damian said, definitely not ordering or demanding Tim.
“We have a whole different thing to do, Damian.”
“I could be your model, and you can be my model.”
“I am not posing for the same pose for hours, Damian. And I already have a subject model in my mind.”
“And that is?”
“Me.” Tim smiled. This bastard really just thinks that he can’t do that, HA! Tim is a badass at taking self-portraits photographs. Fuck you, Damian. He just left the stunned demon there and started walking away to go to Alfred’s greenhouse. He has never been there, because they surprised Alfred five years ago with a greenhouse for him to rest or just have some peace, after all, Alfred is getting old.
He put down his fucking expensive ass tripod that he got during his trip in mall in Tokyo, and start prepping to take his self portrait shot. The flowers and the overall fauna here will make Ivy jealous, or maybe Alfred and Ivy actually having tea together to share different ways to take care of plants, but he doesn’t care actually.
He was inside the greenhouse until the sun set. Now, there has no natural lighting and his photos are kind of wonky. Blergh, he hates it. It’s one of his ick in photography, after all, night photography just triggers some bad crap in his sanity.
He starts to tidy up his equipment and get out of the greenhouse and go to his room. But as he went inside the manor there was silence. ‘Maybe they decided to eat out then” Tim thought as he shrugged and went to his room to deposit his equipment.
He walked to the kitchen with two packets of tantanmen and he still didn't see anyone, so he grinned, no one is going to stop him from having ramen as his dinner. He grabbed the pot and started boiling water and he opened the packets and the seasoning inside it. He scavenges Alfred’s fridge and sees some carrots and cabbage and he starts prepping them, and he opens the freezer and it seems like Alfred just finished doing groceries on the meat section as there is a new pack of meat, well… sorry Alfred but Tim will have it.
After 15 minutes of meticulously crafting this ramen, he finally grabbed the pot and went to the dining table. He opened the pot and grabbed the chopsticks that he grabbed somewhere, doesn’t know why they have a ceramic chopstick but Tim is not complaining and started eating. Best ramen that he made it, probably because of the half pound of meat there, but he will eat it though.
After he ate, he washed the dishes and he started walking to let his metabolism work and as he walked he had a hit of nostalgia. A huge house with him in it, he shivers at the thought and ends up in the portrait room. He opened the lights and different artworks of Damian were there, staring at him. It feels like the portraits in Harry Potter, it’s fucking eerie. He was about to leave but the grand piano in the hidden corner of the room enticed him.
He opened the seemingly left up piano and he tried some basic keys and the piano is still properly tuned. He sat down on the stool and he tried some classicals when his fingers started to play a familiar tune, when he finally remembered what song it was he started all over again. He starts with the F then C to D minor and A minor and the B flat. He remembered this song. After all, this is the song he dedicated to his parents.
Like My Father
Song by JAX
I wanna come home to roses
And dirty little notes on Post-its
And when my hair starts turning grey
He'll say I'm like a fine wine, better with age
I guess I learned it from my parents
That true love starts with friendship
A kiss on the forehead, a date night
Fake an apology after a fight
It was publicised how negligent his parents were. The truth is that they are parents that Tim will never swap to someone. His parents are the best. Sure they are not physically there but they care about him, they care about his happiness but he also cared about their happiness
I need a man who's patient and kind
Gets out of the car and holds the door
I wanna slow dance in the living room like
We're eighteen at senior prom and grow
Old with someone who makes me feel young
I need a man who loves me like
My father loves my mom
He remembers playing the piano whenever they start swaying to their living room, and after they finish dancing with each other, his mother will pull Tim with them as his father will put a record in the gramophone and they will dance in circles. It was fun, he remembered the way his father would carry him after they finished as he was so tired of dancing, they would tuck them in and kiss his forehead and tell him “good night”.
I want a road trip in the summers
I wanna make fun of each other
I wanna rock out to Billy Joel
And flip our kids off when they call us old
He'll accidentally burn our dinner
And let me be the Scrabble winner
And when my body changes shapes
He'll say, "Oh my God, you look hot today"
He is never allowed on their road trips, as Tim is more prone to getting sunburned after living in Gotham for so long. But he is fine with that, their road trips are not Tim’s style and he knows that because they bring Tim one time and he was never ever going road tripping with his parents, they are disgustingly sweet but also at the same time wild. It is a shock that they haven’t gotten a ticket or even got banned in one of the states. And also their music taste clashed with Tim’s classical one.
I need a man who's patient and kind
Gets out of the car and holds the door
I wanna slow dance in the living room like
We're eighteen at senior prom and grow
Old with someone who makes me feel young
I need a man who loves me like
My father loves my mom
He missed his parents. He missed how his mom would hug his worries away. He missed how his father would keep on holding his hands whenever he was unsure of what was happening. He missed the way his parents looked at him whenever he finished a task that was so easy. He missed the way they comforted him whenever he got a bad grade. He missed how they encouraged him to sleep with them whenever he had a nightmare. God, he missed his parents.
He was still playing the piano as a wave of loneliness filled him, maybe he really should visit his parents tomorrow. He already abandoned them for so many years and he needs to love them more.
When he stopped playing, he heard clapping behind him. He looked around and he saw Jason, Damian and Cass together. Cass ran to him and hugged him.
“Beautiful.” she simply said.
“Where do you get that voice, Baby Bird?” Jason said as he walked over to them and Damian followed him.
“I didn’t know you play the piano, Timothy.” Damian asked.
“I was an ordinary rich white boy before becoming Robin, of course I know how to sing and play instruments. And it also doesn’t help that I am at least a quarter asian. I need to live up to the stereotype.” Tim jokes.
“You are definitely killing it Timmy.”
“Sing at my wedding?” Cass asked, making Tim flustered. Tim read the invitation and most of the people that have special standing in the weddings are from the caped community and Tim just hates all most of them.
“I dunno. I am kind of shy, when it comes to that.” Tim just nervously chuckled and he saw Cass pouting. “Oh yeah, what is your wedding motif?” Tim tried to distract them and it clearly worked.
“What is the motif?! The wedding is in three weeks, Timmy!”
“Yeah? And you also know that in the power of Bruce Wayne they can do it in three days?” He rolled his eyes, this family is so dramatic.

Preview of ❝The Little Human Experiment❞ [Legoshi]
Summary: Misaki was just your typical teenage girl living in Japan, but not in the eyes of her society. She's a human in a life where animals live and think like "humans" in our society. She is now brought in as an experiment for her new life outside her facility to see if humans can co-exist with different other species. A certain wolf gets quite attached to our human friend as he is tasked to protect her.
Edit (13.07.2024): Man... after two months of being inactive... AhhCHOO 🫴 WATTPAD STORY LINK | AO3 STORY LINK I can't believe I didn't share a link..............
"Going already?" Mei asked as Misaki grabbed her bag. "Yeah, I have to go over there now to facilitate the choreography for the Light Ceremony," Misaki said as she patted Haru's head. "Get back soon!" Haru waved at her human friend before she left.
Misaki opened her phone to text Shiela that she would go to the clubroom as soon as she walked down the stairs. As she made her way to the clubroom though, she witnessed Juno carrying a sloth to the restroom. "Misaki-senpai!" Juno greeted with a smile as she placed the sloth down. "Ah, hello, Juno. Late for rehearsal?" Misaki asked as they walked to the clubroom together.
"Yeah, I am. I apologize. Are you late too, Misaki-senpai?" Juno asked as Misaki texted Shiela once again that Juno was with her. "Not really. I come in and out of the clubroom as I have two clubs to deal with," she shared. "Woah, really? You must be very busy then. It's still remarkable as you're still the assistant head," Juno had great admiration for the human as she clung to her.
"Assistant director, but still the same," Misaki corrected as she opened the door. "Sorry, I'm late!" Juno announces her arrival while still holding onto Misaki. Misaki raised an eyebrow as she noticed how tense the room was until they came in the room. The majority of the members went up to the two.
"Come on, Juno! You're supposed to text Sheila-senpai when you're late," Els informed the first-year. "She was carrying a sloth to the restroom, so her hands were occupied. It was very kind of you, Juno," Misaki acknowledges Juno's willingness. "Why, thank you, Misaki-senpai!" Juno was happy with Misaki's compliment.
"I've also made sure that Shiela got the memo and to not get you in trouble, so no need to worry," Misaki shared as everyone was wow-ed by Misaki's consideration. "But it doesn't excuse me for being late, so I want to clean the training hall after school. Sorry, Louis-senpai," Juno apologized as she bowed.
"Oh, Legoshi-senpai!" Juno called out to the gray wolf. "I saw the dinosaur in the plaza. It was really pretty. The stage crew is doing their best, so we actors are going to do our best with our dancing practice. We're very inspired!" Juno smiled widely and only had her eyes on him. "...Mm, good, good," Legoshi doesn't seem affected by Juno's comment.
"Yeah, you guys did great. Seeing as it's also my first time seeing it, I'm proud of each one of you. I'll be sure to take pictures of all of them when they're finished," Misaki smirked and showed that her lock screen was now the T-Rex Statue they painted, making sure she looked everyone in the eye.
"Aww, Misaki!" Dom looked flattered. "I'm happy it exceeded your expectations!" Kibi smiled as everyone in the creatives team was appreciative of Misaki's honest remark. "Ah, speaking of, Misaki," Shiela walked up to the human and dragged her towards Louis. "We have some sudden news to share with you," she shared as Louis glared at the cheetah due to her comment before.
"Yes, Sanu suggested that you'll be our main dancer," Louis mentioned and Misaki was shocked. "What!? What do you mean? I'll be at the front?" Misaki covered her mouth with her hand. "One of our dancers won't be available for the festival and you know the dances well. So, they made Juno be back up and you in the center since you know the dance very well," he shared.
"There's only two days left though," she looked worried. "You'll do fine, you the entire dance anyway," Louis was confident. "Did... did Tarok tell you that I'll be revealed too? Is that why you weren't opposed to it?" Misaki asked.
"Yes, he did tell me. I asked his permission for the dance and he's fine with it. You won't be wearing that get-up anymore," Louis smirked and Misaki sighed. "Fine, fine. I'll do it. I'll text Haru that I have a big role here so they won't have to worry about my whereabouts," Misaki shared as she went to grab her phone to text her.
"We'll do a quick fitting with you. I'm sure they'll just readjust one of the existing outfits," Louis told her as Misaki was ready to walk away. "I'll let Legoshi know," Louis smirked upon seeing Misaki frozen in place. He chuckled and patted her back and walked away from her to talk to Legoshi. She quickly ran to the changing room and walked out wearing her PE Uniform.
"Woah, you do have fur in your legs," Juno wondered as she gave a close inspection of Misaki's legs. "They're called Hair for humans. Despite it being short and thin, they make sure they regulate our body temperature and keep dirt away such as my lashes here," Misaki pointed her eyes to let Juno get a closer look.
"Woah, they're so tiny," Juno giggled. As everyone was talking to Misaki and was excited to see her fully perform on stage, Legoshi kept his eyes only on her. He looked up and down her figure as he felt aroused by her appearance.
"Stop eye fucking, my sister." Legoshi snapped out of it and shrank away as Louis glared at him. Louis was most annoyed upon seeing Legoshi's wagging tail when Misaki came into the room. "Sister?" Legoshi questioned. "She's like a sister to me, so don't go hurting her," Louis crossed his arms as it would seem that he was finally open for Misaki to be together with Legoshi.
"So whatever happened before they came in was a misunderstanding on your part," Louis pointed out. "You got the tape measure ready?" Louis asked.
"Oh, yeah, I do," Legoshi went to pull it out, "Fix your problem first," Louis interrupted and he walked away. "Problem?" Legoshi questioned. He looked down to see a tent in his pants. He panics and quickly runs to the restroom. He could not believe he just had a hard-on. It embarrassed him more to notice his tail wagging faster than ever. He really wants to disappear.
"Where's Legoshi?" Misaki asked after she got away from the questioning members. "He went to the restroom real quick. Dom will be measuring you instead," Louis informed her as he tried hiding his laughter, which Misaki noticed but she didn't question it. She would truly have a heart attack if she knew that she had such an effect on Legoshi.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a chilly October night, the leaves rustled as the four brothers made their way towards an abandoned graveyard. The atmosphere was dark and gloomy, but they were determined to explore the area, for reasons unknown to anyone but themselves.
"I don't like this, guys. Let's turn back," the youngest brother, Mikey, shivered.
"What? No way! You said you were bored, Mikey. This is exactly what we need to get our blood pumping!" another brother exclaimed.
"He was bored, Leo, not us. You didn't have to drag us all here," one of the brothers groaned in annoyance.
"Sorry that Mr. Bootyshaker9000 wanted to stay indoors and rot. I'm preventing the inevitable!" Leo clapped back.
"I'm trying to prevent hitting you with my Tech Bo," Donnie gripped his weapon tighter.
"Try it, you won't," Leo egged Donnie on.
"You little…" Donnie scowled, lifting his weapon before getting interrupted.
"Enough! Fighting is not the memo right now! Now you two cut it out or else I'll…wait, what was that?" the oldest brother paused on his scolding to scope out the area. A pungent smell of perfume floated in the air, and chills went down their spines.
"I'm getting really bad vibes here! I told you we should've gone back to the lair!" Mikey exclaimed.
"Don't be such a party pooper, Mike! It's probably all in our heads," Leo tried to come up with a reasonable explanation, but a gust of wind shut off all of his thoughts.
"What was that?!" Raph exclaimed.
"It's a ghost!" Mikey chattered.
"That is preposterous, Michael. There is no such thing as a ghost-"
"No, he's right."
They all screamed in unison, clinging onto Raph. "AH!"
Tumblr media
《RAPH》
After the shock and some failed punching attempts, he finally decided to talk instead of fight, and it was a delightful conversation
yall sat down and talked for hours, He asked a few questions, and you answered them
he made sure not to ask personal questions, like how you died and stuff (unlike Donnie, that insensitive prick)
was kinda sad when he had to go, but gotta make sure pops doesn't worry,
he promises he'll see you again
a few weeks later you show up in his room, sitting down calmly on his bed, or, erm, floating.
he threw multiple items at you before calming down and realizing that it was you, what were you doing here? how did you know where he lives?
all of those questions were brushed off when he heard that you just wanted to see him, and only him.
his heart pounded in his plastron, you wanted to see him? big ol' him? cue huge tail thumping into the ground
yall talked for HOURS, him talking about Lou Jitsu- wait, you've never watched Lou Jitsu? he's inviting you to family movie night. there's no getting out of this.
over the months, the both of you got close, he no longer throws objects or tries to throw hands when he sees you!
enjoys the company when he lifts weights
"Wow, those seem heavy," you said, impressed by his muscles as he lifted the weights.
"They are heavy, but don't worry, Raph's got gains!" he replied, flexing his muscles with a curl-up.
"Can I try?" you asked, reaching out your hands.
"Sure, but be careful. I'll be here to spot ya!" he said, passing the weights to you.
However, you forgot that you were transparent and accidentally dropped the weights on his tail, causing him to scream in pain.
"Oops! I forget I'm transparent sometimes... You just make me feel so alive..." you said sheepishly.
"I-I make you feel alive?" he questioned, seemingly forgetting the intense pain in his tail.
HES SOSOSO SILLY GUYS I CAN'T
《LEO》
He had never sliced a portal open this fast
before he could dive head-first into his portal you floated in front of it
you just wanted to talk... okay... but he's keeping a close eye on you
a few minutes later he's blabbing about Jupiter Jim to you, you've never watched it? what? do you live under a rock? or... a grave...
and you seem so interested! he could talk about it for hours! you know he could.
he literally clung onto the ground when it was time to leave, complaining as Raph dragged him away
he shouted a quick "See you soon"
he saw you soon alright, in his room, looking at his pile of Jupiter Jim comics curiously
He literally screamed like a girl
Oh! it's just you... where did you come from? oh, you just wanted to see him, not his brothers? him?
boosts up his ego by 100x
"I knew you couldn't get enough of me" type of energy
proceeds to yap about Jupiter Jim some more, what? it's YOUR fault for indulging in his hyperfixations
yall are the talker and listener duo
"And so Jupiter Jim was all like- pew pew pew! and the aliens were all like- Ohno! and then- hey, hey [NAME], are ya listening?" He questioned,
"Mhm, go on, I'm all ears"
Leo's eyes widened, and small churrs could be heard "OKOK! And then Jupiter Jim was all like, no way jose!"
He just like me fr
《DONNIE》
There is no logical way this could be happening! ghosts? really?
immediately started asking questions, why do you exist? how do you exist? would you perhaps be interested in some experiments, y'know, for scientific purposes (definitely not for his own personal questions)
his questions just kept on coming and coming, some of them being more insensitive than the last, he would've said more if Raph didn't smack him on top of the head...
but you were happy to answer them non the less
when they had to skedaddle he was pissed, how dare they interrupt! can't you see there was science in the making?
he says he'll come to you, for more questions of course, nothing more... (cap)
he didn't expect you to come to him.
he jumped a little but then started going into his "I ask you, answer" mode
Experiments on you (with consent ofc)
discovers you have telekinesis
you two grew close, his experiments died down the more he learned about you
now, he just really enjoys the company
just knowing that you're there watching him while he tackles a project gets him so motivated
you're like his little assistant
"[NAME], be a dear and pass me that wrench over there," he asks, hand out, palm open,
"You got it boss" you floated the wrench toward him, and he grabbed it
"Thank you, you really are a great help, [NAME]"
"Just glad to be here Don-tron!" you smiled, not noticing the slight wag to his tail.
He really appreciates you
《MIKEY》
He just kept screaming and screaming until you snapped him out of it
what? why aren't you trying to take his body? and why aren't you freakishly creepy, you just looked like a normal person, minus the floating and transparency
Oh, you just wanted to talk? well, as long as you don't possess his body he's all for it!
The conversation was amazing! he got so much more information about ghosts, he's even more fixated on them now!
you got this turtle laying on the ground, twirling his mask tails in his fingers, kicking his feet, saying "Ooh! Tell me more!"
was whining like a puppy dog when he had to get up on out of there, puppy dog eyes did not work in his favor tonight..
he swears up and down that he will visit you, just wait!
I guess you've waited long enough, because the following week you were caught snooping around his room
he screamed, yes, he won't lie.
but it's not his fault that you popped up out of nowhere!
then starts talking to you like he didn't scream like 100 decibels
Just yip yap yapping away, but you don't mind, you enjoy socializing with him
kinda sad that he can't touch you though, sometimes he wants nothing more than to wrap his arms around you
you're his muse! asks you to pose for him, and you happily oblige
"Okay just keep that position, right there, perfect! such an amazing muse for me!" He smiles,
"Well, it's easy to pose when I have such a wonderful artist painting me" You replied,
"Awe shucks, don't compliment me like that! you're going to give me an ego" he chirps happily
lala and okok duo. that's all I have to say.
Tumblr media

Manipulative
Husband! Namjoon x reader
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"Joonie pleaseeee " you whined to your husband, who was working on his computer in the living room, propped up in his glasses and dress shirt, looking  hot as usual, nothing new about that.
He ignores you while continuing to work.
You sit beside him on the couch, intertwining your arm with his as you try to pout and show your puppy dog eyes to melt him.
"Come on, we even came back quickly from our honeymoon because of your work, my friends are dying to meet you."
"Let them die, I don't have the time".
You opened your mouth in shock, slapping his arm before moving out of the way, giving him a scowl.
"Fine! then I will go and meet them on my own!" You yell and go up the stairs to your room, not seeing your husband's furrowed eyebrows and clenched jaw , glaring at your retreating back.
You had gone way too far this time.He could put up with your whining and complaining about how they had to cut the honeymoon trip short because of his work, but this? This was unacceptable.
How DARE you try to leave him alone at night to hang out with your so called friends?
He was your husband.
Soulmate.
Life partner.
You don't leave them alone.
You should have sensed that he did not want to be in the same vicinity as those two faced bitches you call your friends which is why he tried to make up so many excuses so that you wouldn't go either.
But not only did you not get the memo , you were getting ready to meet them alone without him ?
If he couldn't come with you ,then you should have sat down quietly like a good wife and made him some coffee.
It was time to teach you a lesson.

Even though you were still exhausted from work ,you still were excited to meet your friends.
It had been so long since the wedding that you weren't able to go out on your own for once. You and Namjoon were so busy with all those dinners with relatives and Namjoon's friend ,you couldn't meet up with your girls.
You were still cranky about Namjoon's insensitiveness.First he made the "letting them die" joke ,did not even apologize for it and it's been three hours since that argument you guys had ,and yet he still did not come up to the bedroom to apologize.
You didn't get why he couldn't get along with your friends. You were already introduced to his social circle and hanging out with the guys and their partners for quite a while. Why was it difficult for him to do the same ?
Was it so wrong of you to ask him to spend some time with you and your friends? You had met all of his friends, had frequent dinners with them and their partners. Why couldn't he do the same thing?

Whatever, I'll say sorry afterwards. But first, let me enjoy some girl's time.
You took out your phone to text your girls that you were ready and were going to leave in a few minutes but were heartbroken after you saw the messages.

Minnie : "Thank god we told Y/N the name of a different restaurant, got tired of her whining about married life and then parading her rich husband around "
Aera : "I know right,I'm so glad we're finally gonna have some peace and not her annoying jibber jabber about why her husband is do great"
Sungah:"GUYS! AT LEAST SEE THE NAME OF THE GROUP CHAT!"
Minnie:"Oh shit"
You didn't bother reading the rest of it.They probably would have even left the group chat.Tears escaped from your eyes and you started wiping your eyes with your coat sleeve, and you began to get up from your dresser to change.
The door to the room opened and your tear stricken face saw Namjoon's handsome one .
He was looking so good ,all dressed up in that gray three piece you got him for his birthday. You weren't shocked to see him   in formal attire.
This was the kind of man Namjoon was .He  dressed up to see your friends whom he didn't like just to make up with you.
"Why are you crying baby?I'm sorry we had an argument! You even look so good dressed all up. Don't cry please. Look, I even dressed up to meet them.Lets wipe up your tears yeah ?I'm really sorry baby" He blabbered as he pulled you into his arms ,your tears staining his suit.
You held onto his coat ,the tears kept pouring and you started crying more.
You felt so ashamed. You fought with this amazing man because of those fake girls.  You ignored him and yet he still came to meet them so that you could be happy.

It took a while for him to calm you down but you were still a blabbering mess as you kept on apologizing on between of telling him about the hurtful messages
"I'm so sorry Joon".
"Baby, it's okay, please don't cry." He said, wiping your tears.
What did you do to deserve this man?
"Now please listen to me.You will no longer make more friends, alright? You already have me and my friends. That's enough for you.If you want to eat out, I am there. If you want to go clubbing and drink, I am there. You have problems, I will help. Don't worry, I am the only one you need. And you're the only one I need "
He pulled you into a hug, you continuously nodding your head.
"Now please stop crying, my crybaby. You don't need to waste your precious tears for those fake bitches. Let's order a pizza! okay?"
You nodded, wiping your tears." Okay".
Namjoon smiled, kissing your forehead before going down the stairs to call the pizza place.
He smiled.
Those bitches did become useful after all.
He thought about how he met up with your friends in his basement. To teach them a lesson and give them a warning to leave you or else they wouldn't be able to live.
He obviously didn't kill them. Namjoon would never have any blood on his hands.
He  manipulated your parents the same way  in order to marry you.
He hoped after this incident you will finally learn to do whatever he says and have things done his way. After all the things he had done for you, you should obey him at least.
If not, then he had other ways as well.
You came downstairs after a shower with a smile on your face.
"You look tired, is work too stressful, baby?"
"It's nothing Joon, just my boss is being a pain in the ass as always."
"Maybe you should quit, You know I make enough for the both of us."
"It's okay. I want to do this for myself."
You both smiled at each other and you stood up on your tippy toes to give him a peck on the lips, which he turned to a full makeout session.
Guess I have to get your job out of the way as well. The things you make me do, babygirl.

I love everything you are doing with Orihime, if it's not too much troble, I wanted to hear more of what she does when she get kidnapped. Also did Rukia try anything when she got sentenced to death for bulshit crimes? It's been forever since I read the manga, so I don't remember what rukia was feeling exactly during this time, if she accepted the whole thing bc she has spent way too much time in the soul society that she just didn't see it how much bulshit it was or something else, or if it was just your standard damsel in distress thing
Rukia behaves in the calm, rational but firm way you'd expect out of a seated officer, especially a lieutenant that earned her position through hard work and demonstration after demonstration that she could be trusted with such a position.
...Byakuya, on the other hand, was appointed to his position by birthright as the latest scion of a long but narrow line of people who retained their power by violence as social standing. So when Byakuya experiences the psychotic crisis of "the people you respect the most want the person you love the most dead", the coinflip of his emotions lands on tails in AEIWAM.
*****
"...To Death?" She asked, staring at Renji.
"Yeah." He winced, shifting uncomfortably.
"...For a Misdemeanor Infraction that, per code 3.15.27846 sub-section 42-4, carries a MAXIMUM penalty of a month's suspension without pay while a performance review is conducted, and, pending the review, possible termination of my job, not my whole person?" She continued.
"...Um. Yeah, yeah that's the official rules per the Shingami Legal Manual." Said Renji. "It's real fuc- it's very peculiar and I'm honestly not sure what to make of it. Also, when did you learn to quote the manual like-"
"I'm a Goddamn Lieutenant, I know the law, and this stinks on ice." She glared. "I know I'm not allowed to question the orders or ask who issued them, but did you double-check that this is, in fact, what they meant to send, and didn't give you the memo for someone else or send out the wrong butterfly?"
"Um." Renji winced, pointedly studying the wall to his left. "Kuchiki-Taicho went to do that as soon as he saw the order."
Rukia blanched. "Renji. When did he leave?"
"He left for the central 46's liaison office directly from the 6th division's office when we got the order about an hour ago. I wanted to go with him, but he insisted that he could handle it and that you should get the news from me rather than a stranger."
"Abarai Renji." She spoke, voice low and dangerous. "Do you remember what happened the first day I came home from the 13th division boot camp with that shiner?'
"Yeah, Kuchiki-taicho broke into Ukitake-taicho's house with Senbonsakura at 2AM because he thought someone had hit yo-" Renji laughed then stopped. "-Oh."
"You let my brother, the absolute last person you can expect to behave in a rational and restrained manner to any perceived threats to my person, go off to visit someone who just issued an order for my extermination? UNSUPERVISED?" She growled.
Renji stood, paralyzed in wide-eyed horror. "I. uh. I gotta go prevent some treason." he sputtered, before bolting from the room.
***** "I fucked up, I fucked up, I fucked uuuuuup-" Gin hissed under his breath as he ran through the maze of buildings that made up the central government's compound. "Sure Gin! Keep feeding him spiritual power Gin! It'll fix everything Gin! No way he's going to cause a massive inter-dimensional destabilization event Gin!"
He turned the corner to the central 46's liaison office, just to the side of the sealed gate, and sprinted for the small office at the base of the tower all Hell butterflies issued from, where the Gate's security guard and the Liaison worked.
"Hey guys sorry to burst in here but it's kind of an Emergen... cy." Gin shouted and then sputtered as something warm splashed underfoot. He looked down to find that the previously-beige carpet of the Liaison's office was now a deep and unpleasantly wet crimson. Behind him, there was a faint creak as the unsealed and unguarded gate swayed lightly in the breeze.
"Oh." Gin realized, wilting. "I'm in deep shit."

what if there were two (side by side in orbit)
__
(Chapter 4 here)
Chapter 5
March 1999
“Got your mail,” Will announces as he comes back into the office. He falters at the edge of Nico’s desk, trying and failing to see a single square inch of available space on which to drop said mail - a handful of memos, photocopied reports and interdepartmental envelopes.
Nico straightens from the newspaper he’s been poring over, immediately registering Will’s dilemma.
“Oh, thanks, I can –” Nico accepts the little bundle of papers from Will and automatically looks around for somewhere to set it down, reaching the exact same conclusion Will did a second earlier. Will laughs.
Nico slumps, defeated, still holding the mail in a loose grip.
Will plucks the envelopes from his hand. “Here, I’ll put them…” Will glances around, finding almost every other surface cluttered with papers, books and files.
Nico sighs, dejected. “It’s a lost cause.”
“I can go put them back in your slot in the mail room,” Will offers, only half-kidding.
“No, I’ll just –” Nico takes the papers back again, opening three crammed-full drawers in his desk before finding one with room to stuff the mail on top and shutting it with a satisfied nod.
“Much better,” Will says. He moves to his own, mostly-clear desk and begins to flip through the items he’s retrieved from his own mailbox. Nothing too interesting. Copies of authorized expense reports, a reminder that he’s due to renew some sort of workplace safety training that he doesn’t even remember completing the first time around. He pauses, eyes skimming over a glossy flier.
“You think we should do the workplace communication training workshop?” Will says contemplatively. He glances over to Nico, who looks predictably appalled.
“No,” Nico answers.
Will grins. “Aw, c’mon. Don’t you want to learn to communicate more effectively with me?”
Nico gives him a withering look. “Solace, if we communicate any more effectively, they’ll make us teach the class ourselves. And neither of us want that.
Will attempts not to look too outwardly pleased at this. “Good point,” he agrees, solemn. “We don’t want to peak too soon. Or like, get promoted against our will.”
Nico lets out a laugh. “Definitely not. I kind of like it down here.” He shoots Will a smile, a real one. Will winks. Nico huffs and turns back to his paper.
Will sets the flier aside, unfurling the red string of an interoffice envelope. He squints at his name, misspelled and scrawled messily underneath two dozen others, before pulling a single sheet of paper from the envelope, folded in half. It’s nice paper, embossed. Thicker than the stuff he and Nico are allotted to print letters on. Will makes a face, scanning over the page. “What kind of a name is Octavian?”
Nico’s head jerks up from his newspaper.
“Sorry,” Will shakes his head. “That wasn’t very nice, was it? I’m sure he’s lovely.”
“He’s not,” Nico says acidly. “What does he want?”
Will blinks, surprised at the sudden vitriol in his partner’s voice. “It doesn’t say. I’ve never even heard of this guy.” Will peers at the letterhead, then the interdepartmental envelope, trying to ascertain where the letter originated from. “He wants to meet with me tomorrow. Why wouldn’t he call, or send an email? What if I hadn’t even checked my mail today?”
Nico scowls. “That’s Octavian.”
“He’s the… associate deputy director?” Will reads from under the signature at the bottom of the letter.
“Yeah,” Nico says, tired. “He’s Reyna’s boss.”
“Wonder what I did to deserve a meeting,” Will says, his stomach lurching unpleasantly. He reads through the letter again, but there’s absolutely nothing to indicate what the meeting might be for. It feels ominous.
Nico grimaces. “Nothing, most likely. He’s – Octavian doesn’t like me. Or the X-Files. I’m actually surprised his name hasn’t come up before. When I’ve mentioned fighting for the department to keep its funding – that’s all on Octavian. He’s always looking for some excuse to shut me down. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was looking for you to snitch on me.”
Will scoffs, disgusted. “Well, that’s not going to happen.”
“No?”
“Of course not!” Will says, aghast. “I would never. What would I even snitch about, if I wanted to? That you put in extra hours you don’t claim in your paysheet? That you do research into cases on your own time? Besides, we’re partners, Nico. You’re my friend.”
Nico looks a bit shaken by this declaration, and Will turns back to his desk, giving the other man a moment.
“What happens in the basement stays in the basement,” Will announces with finality, flipping through the rest of his mail. Nico laughs.
::
Nico’s in the office a full hour early the next morning, pacing, his stomach in knots. He’d tried to brush off Octavian’s letter, and done a pretty good job of it for most of yesterday. But it had started to weigh on him by the evening, alone in his apartment. By the time he’d gone to bed, the thought of Will’s looming meeting had taken up a heavy, unpleasant occupancy in his gut.
First, there’d been the niggling worry that Octavian was looking for dirt on Nico. But even if Will would have indulged that, which he’d made quite clear he wouldn’t, Nico’s not really worried about his work or his methods being scrutinized. He’s proud of the cases they’ve worked, maybe even more so in the last six months. Sure, they haven’t solved every case in its entirety, they haven’t locked up every perpetrator, but they’ve been careful and thorough. They’ve helped people. The case in Fairbrook was a standout, certainly, and it’s gotten a lot of attention, both from the Bureau and the media. Surely that will help his case, if he needs to have one.
So there have been those worries - small and persistent, really nothing new. The X-Files has been in perpetual danger of losing its funding ever since Nico first descended into the basement. But what’s truly had his insides twisting since last night is the unwelcome worry that perhaps this meeting means that he’s losing Will.
There’s no denying that Will’s an excellent agent, and he did amazing work in Fairbrook. What if the Bureau wants to reassign him somewhere they think he’ll be more useful? What if Will wants to be somewhere where he’ll be more useful?
Nico works alone. He always has. Sure, there have been other agents assigned to work with him here and there, and it’s been fine. Nothing special, but fine.
But Will... Will is a partner, in a way Nico hadn’t even considered possible. Nico doesn’t want Will to leave. He’d arrived at this realization with complete, crashing clarity at three am just as he was finally about to drift off to sleep. The rest of the night had mostly been a write-off.
How did this happen? This was not part of the plan when Will came to work down here. Work, sure. They could work together. With a very few notable exceptions, Nico gets along decently with his colleagues. He can be a team player when the situation requires it.
But just when exactly did Will worm his way under Nico's skin the way he has? The way that makes it feel like there's a tangibly empty space in the office when Will leaves early for a dentist appointment, or gets pulled into another department for an afternoon? The way Nico glances over to Will automatically, reflexively seeking his agreement, his input. The way it settles him when he receives it.
The way his stupid heart swells when Will laughs at his jokes, loud and bright, his lingering fond smile.
Fuck.
And now – what if all that gets snatched away? What if that's even what Will wants? Sure, Will seems to enjoy Nico's company, but really (as Nico realized as he entered that particularly devastating train of thought around four am) Will seems to enjoy everyone's company. It's not as though there's anything special about Nico, no reason for Will to want to stay here of all places. Here, in the basement, the armpit of the FBI. Here, hanging out with the one little weirdo no one else takes seriously.
Will's just so damn easy to get along with, so fucking pleasant to have around. So much more curious and open-minded than Nico ever would have expected. He's smart and funny and... tall and... okay, Nico supposes he can admit it – it doesn't hurt that he's really attractive.
Fuck. Fuck.
Having completed probably a dozen laps of the office (not easy, thank you, there’s not exactly a clear path around the perimeter), Nico drops heavily into his chair then drops his head into his hands. He's an existential, underslept mess, in no way prepared for Will's early arrival when the office door opens mere seconds later.
Will beams at the sight of Nico, sitting there like a disheveled, pathetic pile of desperation, and how the fuck is that fair?
Nico clears his throat, forcing himself to sit up straighter. "You're early," he says. The words come out sounding far more accusatory than he intended.
"Yeah." Will's face falls a little. "Sorry?"
"No, no," Nico says immediately. "I'm – just ignore me. I didn't get much sleep."
Will's brow creases in sympathy. "Sorry to hear that."
Nico watches with a sinking heart as Will pulls off his coat and hangs it by the door, ruffling a hand through his hair and brushing water droplets off his bag. What if this is their last morning in this office together? What if this is the last time he watches Will hang his coat, cross the office and drop into his chair? Every little motion is so familiar now, so much a part of his morning. How did he never think to properly appreciate it before?
Will turns once he's seated, regarding Nico with a little more scrutiny than Nico had been prepared for, and Nico immediately attempts to look completely sane and cool. Like the sort of person who wouldn't miss his partner at all, were that partner to be reassigned.
Will doesn't look as if he's fooled, which is concerning in itself.
"Should we go grab coffee?" Will asks, worried. "Have you eaten?"
Nico nods, grateful for the distraction. "Definitely yes to coffee and no, I haven't eaten." He stands from his desk. "Dunkin’?"
Will makes a face. "It started pouring right after I got off the train. I ran all the way here with my bag over my head. I don't suppose you have an umbrella?"
Nico does not, so the cafeteria it is, then. On days when they’re feeling particularly motivated, they'll take the stairs up to the eighth floor, but god, it's early and Nico feels like shit, and Will seems to understand this without Nico needing to explain. Will leads them to the single elevator that descends to the basement level.
The elevator gets progressively stuffier and more crowded as it rises through the building, and Nico gets progressively more twitchy and irritable. By the sixth floor, there's barely room to breathe, and he and Will are trapped in the back corner together, a wall of suits and briefcases forming a barricade of claustrophobia in front of them.
Will glances down at Nico, then bumps their shoulders together, once, then harder, teasingly shuffling over inch by inch until Nico's smushed against the wall, Will grinning and Nico trying valiantly to maintain his scowl in the face of this unasked-for amusement.
Ten minutes later they're settled at a table with a view of the rooftop garden, Nico gazing out the windows at the puddles collecting on the pebbled cement outside and picking at a bran muffin. Across the table, Will checks his watch.
"What time's your meeting?" Nico asks. As if he doesn’t know. As if he’s spent more than a few minutes not thinking about it in the last eighteen hours.
Will lets out a breath. "In an hour."
"Oh –"
"Yeah." Will makes a face. "He emailed me last night to move it earlier. Not sure why he couldn't have just emailed in the first place."
That's not such a bad thing, Nico supposes, as his stomach gives a violent lurch. At least they'll know soon, one way or another.
"Guess he didn't say what he wanted to meet about in the email," Nico says, trying to sound as though this is only of minimal concern to him.
Will shakes his head. "Nope. Just hope I'm not about to get fired." He lets out a nervous laugh and Nico glances up, surprised.
"Why would you think that?"
Will shrugs. "I don't know. It's all a little weird and mysterious, isn't it? Maybe I made some horrible mistake and didn't realize."
"You definitely didn't. If anything, I'd think he'd – well. Just, hypothetically... what if they offered you a promotion?"
Will laughs, surprised. "What would – that doesn't make any sense. I'm brand new. I barely know what I'm doing yet."
Nico scoffs. "That's ridiculous. You do know that, right? The Robert Marcus case – that was basically all your doing. And the whole Bureau's been talking about it."
Will blinks. "I mean – that was a group effort, though."
Nico averts his eyes, gazing into his coffee. The coffee here is decent, at least. Thick and strong. The ceramic cups are small, but heavy, a pleasing weight to them. The bran muffins leave a lot to be desired. Although Nico's not sure if he could enjoy eating anything at this exact moment.
"What – what would you think? If they did offer you a promotion?" Nico asks, his heart throbbing in his chest, staring desperately into the depths of his coffee.
"Do you really think that's what this is about?" Will sounds incredibly skeptical. Which is kind of hilarious, Nico thinks. Will, the skeptical partner, whose deadliest skepticism is directed at his own abilities.
"Wait," Will says, taking in Nico’s expression. "Are you – are you worried that I'll be promoted?"
And okay, that's uncalled for. Nico is frankly offended. Nico is supposed to be the psychological profiler here, thank you very much.
Nico shrugs. He chances a glance at Will, who's gazing out into the rain, brow furrowed. Probably considering all the other floors he could be working on that aren't the basement. All the other agents he could be working with who aren't weird and grouchy. And short. Take Magnus, for instance. Magnus is tall, and he’s almost always in a good mood. That fucker.
Will's gaze finally flicks from the window back to Nico, something tentative there. "I don't think there's any other job I'd rather do at the Bureau," he says slowly, as if he's only just realizing it himself. "I feel like I really lucked into something, being assigned to this department, you know?” Will’s blue eyes are clear, and Nico's stomach seems to settle back towards its regular location. “The work we’ve been doing together – it’s fascinating. And it feels worthwhile. Like we’re making a difference. I think it’s something I think I could learn to be really good at. I’d like to. And I mean." Will swallows. "I think you already know that I enjoy working with you," he finishes, timid.
Nico can feel his cheeks warming. Stupid cheeks. "Yeah," he mutters, turning his coffee cup in his hands. "I mean... me too."
"You like working with me, or you like working with you?" Will asks, suddenly wide-eyed and dead serious.
Nico scowls. "Fuck off."
Will laughs.
"I like working with you, okay?" Nico says, pained.
Will's fully grinning at him now, the full, devastating one hundred watts.
"And you know. You did just save me from death by exsanguination, so it's probably in my best interests to keep you around," Nico says, as grudgingly as he can manage.
Their conversation in the cafeteria is heartening, but Nico's still a grouchy ball of nerves almost an hour later as he watches the clock in the basement office tick down, the time of Will's meeting looming closer and closer. With fifteen minutes to go, he can't take it anymore and he stands abruptly, throwing his jacket over the back of his chair. He crosses to a cabinet in the corner and pulls out a bag, little-used, slinging it over his shoulder.
Will blinks up at him from where he's cross-legged on the dusty floor in front of a filing cabinet, digging through the bottom drawer. "Are you running away from home?"
Nico rolls his eyes. "I'm going to go to the gym."
Will's eyebrows rise. "The gym? Oh. Okay."
"You don't have to sound so surprised," Nico mutters, "I go to the gym."
“No, obviously you do, I mean…” Will suddenly goes pink and flustered, his gaze somewhere around Nico’s chest, and Nico’s brow furrows in confusion, glancing down to make sure he hasn’t spilled something on himself.
Will clears his throat. “It’s just that I’ve never seen you go to the gym. Here.”
They gaze at each other for a long moment. Will’s pink cheeks make his eyes look bluer. Brighter.
“Well,” Nico says, bemused. “I guess it’s been a while. And hey,” he adds as he reaches the office door, as if it’s nothing but an afterthought, “good luck with your meeting.”
Will smiles from where he’s still seated on the floor, looking nervous. “Thanks.”
::
Nico’s workout doesn’t last long. Mid-morning is apparently a popular time to use the Bureau gym, and Nico can’t bear the thought of making small talk with any of his colleagues at the moment. He lasts about half an hour, weights and some half-assed cardio before he hits the showers, washing up quickly before heading back downstairs, hair still damp.
Maybe he’ll have some time to collect himself before Will reappears. Maybe he should have done some yoga. That's supposed to be relaxing, right? Frank showed him some poses once. He doesn't think he can remember any of them except the one where you lie flat on your back.
Nico does actually manage to distract himself by reading through a file for a few minutes before he hears the heavy slam of the fire door at the stairwell, letting him know that someone’s reached the basement level.
Nico watches the office door, breath caught in his chest. He only has seconds to wait.
“What a fucking asshole,” Will announces, the office door slamming shut behind him. “What the actual fuck.”
Will’s face is flushed. He pulls off his jacket, the motion jerky, tossing it on top of his coat on the rack by the door. It falls to the floor. Will takes a deep breath, hands on his hips before retrieving it and shoving the jacket more violently at the coat rack. Nico thinks he’s actually shaking.
“What happened?”
“You were right.” Will throws up his hands, disbelieving. “He wanted me to fucking snitch on you! He started asking me all these inane questions, like whether your methods made me feel unsafe.” Will rolls his eyes, gloriously. “All these fucking pointed questions about our protocol for initiating cases and –” Will lets out a huff of frustration. “I obviously wasn’t answering the way he wanted me to, and he just got… more and more infuriating.”
Will sits on the edge of his desk, then immediately stands again, shoving a hand roughly through his hair.
“That fucking anemic loser,” he seethes. “The absolute nerve. I can’t even –” Will shakes his head, lost for words.
Nico watches him for a long moment, now torn between worry and admiration. “And so what did you – what did you tell him?”
“I told him you were a brilliant agent, one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, and that the FBI was lucky to have you!” Will says, his voice rising.
Nico's throat goes tight.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t actually yell at him.” Will huffs out a laugh. “I didn’t think you’d appreciate that.”
Nico feels as if he’s been hit over the head with something very heavy. “Well. I might have. A bit. I sure would have enjoyed watching it.”
Will smiles, finally. His eyes are bright, cheeks pink. He’s radiant like this. Like some kind of avenging angel, or a Greek god.
“Thank you,” Nico manages. “For defending me.”
Will shakes his head, frowning. “I just told him the truth.”
“So he’s not – he didn’t threaten to pull our funding or, I don’t know. Assign us both to Agricultural Corruption?”
Will barks out a laugh. “No.” He lowers himself to the edge of his desk again, aggressively scrubbing a hand over his face. “He made some noise about irregular procedures and untenable evidence.” Will throws up one hand in a half-hearted air quote. “But honestly it seemed like he was just grasping at straws by that point. He kept bringing up specific instances of when seemed to think we weren’t following protocol - he had a fucking list – and I just very patiently explained all the ways he was wrong.”
Nico laughs. Octavian’s got to be absolutely seething right now, and that’s a pretty great feeling. As if that wasn’t enough good news, it doesn’t sound as if Will’s going anywhere. Nico suddenly feels about twenty pounds lighter.
“Seriously, what an absolute dick,” Will says. “What the fuck is that guy’s problem?”
Nico shrugs. “He’s one of those guys who always wants to be at the top of the heap. Even as far as he’s climbed the corporate ladder here at the Bureau, it doesn’t seem to have made him any happier. It’s not enough for him to be at the top. He needs everyone else to know they’re at the bottom, too.”
“I can’t stand guys like that.” Will scowls. “He did commend us on the Fairbrook case, though he didn’t seem happy about it. Told me I was a valuable asset but he sounded like he meant the exact opposite. I made sure he knew that without your timely research resources, Marcus would still probably be murdering diabetics.”
Will stands again. “You know, I think I need to walk this off. I’m kind of a wreck right now. I managed to hold it together while I was talking to him, but I feel like my blood pressure’s through the roof.”
“Isn’t it still raining?” Nico asks.
“I don’t think I care," Will laughs, shoving a hand through his hair again. The violence he’s perpetrated on it in the last few minutes combined with the humidity of the day makes it stand out like a messy halo around his head. It’s glorious. "I can’t believe I put on my best suit for that idiot.”
"Well, you look..." Nico swallows. Amazing. Gorgeous. Breathtaking. God, why the fuck did he start this sentence? The longer Nico's lost for words, the more Will's smile grows, and when Nico finally manages, "very professional," Will grins, wide.
"Aww, thanks."
Nico rolls his eyes as hard as he can.
"Do you want company?" Nico asks, as he watches Will pull his coat back on. He immediately curses his lack of filter. "It's fine if you don't." Will’s jacket falls from the coat rack again and Will kicks it aggressively into the corner.
But Will only says, "of course I want your company.”
"What if it's still raining, though?" Will asks as they head to the stairwell. "You don't like getting wet."
"I guess I can make an exception," Nico mutters, because that sounds a lot more sane than, now that I know you're staying, I kind of don't want to let you out of my sight.
Will steps back neatly, holding the door open for Nico with a little bow when they reach the ground floor. "You know, for someone who doesn't like rain, you'd think you'd keep an umbrella around," he muses, eyes sparkling.
"Yeah, well. I'm an enigma wrapped in a mystery," Nico mutters, and Will’s bright laughter is worth any potential rain.
The rain is more of a drizzly mist by the time they make it out onto Pennsylvania Avenue, and they walk in companionable quiet in the general direction of the sculpture garden, Will looking a bit more settled the longer they walk. It settles Nico, too.
His mind drifts back over the last six months, still a bit baffled that this has become what it has, and so easily. A partnership. A friendship. Will had said, of course I want your company like it was nothing, implicit.
And Nico suddenly remembers his worries, in the first few months Will was here. That he wouldn't be able to keep Will at arm's length, that he had to make sure not to let Will in, not to let Will know him. As they wait at the back of a crowd of tourists for the lights to change at Constitution Avenue, Will's shoulder bumps gently into his, and Will smiles and Nico realizes it's far, far too late for that.
The realization doesn't hit him like a truck, not like last night, when he desperately wanted to sleep. Instead, the knowledge settles over him gently, like the misty rain, like the half-memory of a mostly-inconsequential task that he neglected to complete.
Well, damn.
::
Still March 1999
Nico, having returned from the continental breakfast buffet, hands over a coffee and muffin. Will accepts both gratefully from where he’s seated cross-legged on his bed. Nico’s footsteps falter on the way across the hotel room. “You smell… fruity,” he comments, then immediately looks embarrassed.
Will grins. “Well,” he shrugs. “I am, a little.”
Nico huffs, settling himself onto his own bed, newspaper spread out in front of him.
“It’s probably my shampoo,” Will realizes. “It’s Dewberry, from the Body Shop. Kayla got a big gift basket for her birthday, but she didn’t like the scent. I like it, though. So you’ll have to put up with me smelling fruity for the foreseeable future.” He tilts his head in Nico’s general direction, ruffling his still-damp hair.
Nico rolls his eyes. Then, a moment later – “It could be worse,” he mutters.
Will hides a smile, turning back to his own work. If he’s forced to tolerate Nico’s arms in that devastatingly tight Ramones t-shirt every time they share a room, Nico can put up with Will’s fruity-smelling hair, Will thinks ruefully.
They’re sharing a room on this particular trip because Reyna insisted on it; Will’s been called here to conduct a couple of autopsies, Nico tagging along because he’d read about reports of possible UFO sightings in the area. They’re both a little disappointed with yesterday’s conclusions – neither of the autopsies revealed anything indicating foul play, and Nico’s UFOs turned out to be drunk teenagers with laser pointers.
Sharing a room isn’t a hardship, anyway. They’ve done it on cases more often than not in the weeks since their visit to St. Ambrose, Ramones t-shirt notwithstanding. The couple of occasions they’ve booked separate rooms, they’ve wound up watching TV and chatting until late in the evening anyway, WIll often dozing off in Nico’s room.
Nico folds up the newspaper, leaning back on his hands and gazing towards the window. It’s still pouring out. The rain began just as they pulled off the interstate yesterday afternoon and it hasn’t stopped since. Neither of them had thought to bring an umbrella, and they’ve been sprinting from building to car to building attempting to shield themselves with briefcases and newspapers.
“It’s still fucking raining,” Nico grumbles. “I hate getting wet.”
“Because you’re made of sugar,” Will says vaguely, glancing over his report.
Nico snorts. “I’m what?”
Will glances up, grinning. Nico’s gone a bit pink.
“Because you’re made of sugar. It’s what my mom says. You know. Because if you were made of sugar, you’d melt. In the rain.”
Nico scowls, clearly trying not to look amused. “If anyone’s made of sugar, it’s you,” he mutters. “I’ve seen what you call breakfast.”
Will laughs. He refuses to feel any guilt over his penchant for pastries. “Are you calling me sweet?”
Nico rolls his eyes. “You wish.”
Will grins wider, flopping back onto the bed for a long stretch. He doesn’t miss the way Nico’s eyes flit to his waist, where his shirt rides up. The reflexive flip-flop in his own stomach is already expected, familiar. He’d pulled on sweats and a t-shirt after his shower, knowing they likely wouldn’t leave the room for a couple of hours and not quite ready to face getting properly dressed.
Will rolls to his side, tugging his shirt back into place and propping himself up on an elbow. Nico regards him, looking a bit exasperated. But that’s become familiar, too.
“So you don’t want to head out yet then?” Will asks.
Nico glances back to the window. “Eh. It’s still early. We could wait a bit, see if it eases up. I’m not crazy about driving in this.”
“Sure,” Will says easily. “I think I’m done my report. You wanna watch TV?”
Nico makes a face. “It’s all gonna be morning news right now. I’d be happy to never hear another word about the fucking Clintons.”
Will nods, in complete agreement. “Animal Planet?”
Nico huffs, then – “Oh, actually…” He hops up from the bed, grabbing his overnight bag from the floor and retrieving something small from a side pocket.
He tosses the item to Will, who of course, fumbles it. It lands on the bed though, and Will’s eyes go wide. He feels his face heating, fast. “Um,” he says.
“Oh,” Nico laughs, almost giggles. Will glances up, astonished.
“I should have explained –” Nico begins, red-faced himself, then laughs harder as he takes in Will’s expression. Will doesn’t think he’s ever seen Nico laugh so hard, and the sight makes him feel almost unbearably fond. He’d be able to enjoy it so much more if it weren’t for the accompanying and distracting feelings of shock, and confusion, because –
Nico leans over the bed, grabbing the pack of very clearly x-rated playing cards from Will’s limp hand.
“They were a gift,” he says, still very much red in the face, still laughing. “A stupid – I don’t know, it was one of those stupid blind gift exchanges. Secret Santa, or something. And – they’re the only playing cards I have, and I thought I could try teaching you to shuffle again next time we were on an overnight, but I didn’t really think about –”
“Oh,” Will laughs, the pieces finally fitting together. “Oh. Yeah. A little warning might have been nice.”
They gaze at each other in silence for a moment before bursting into simultaneous laughter.
“Sorry,” Nico laughs, “just – the look on your face.”
Will shakes his head, scrubbing hands over his very warm face. “Fine,” he laughs, “Fine. Let’s shuffle.”
He heads to the table, and Nico follows. It’s sweet, Will realizes, a shot of warmth to his chest as the shock fades. It’s sweet that Nico remembered this, that he wanted to give Will another chance. Will splits the deck, snorting when even more explicit scenes are revealed.
“Jesus, Nico,” he laughs. “I don’t know if I can – where do you even get – it’s just so many naked men.”
“It is, isn’t it?” Nico agrees, peering over. “To be honest, I hadn’t actually opened them.” Nico grabs the top card from the deck and surveys it critically, eyes dancing. “Are you saying this gentleman isn’t your type?” He flips the card to show it to Will, who inspects it for a moment, lip caught between his teeth, trying not to laugh.
“I don’t know. He’s awfully… oily.”
Nico nods, trying to compose himself. “True, true. He looks like he could use a good shower. He flips to the next card. His brows shoot up. “Oh, look. These three are having a shower.”
Will shakes his head, letting out a giggle. “I don’t see a lot of showering going on there. That’s a waste of perfectly good hot water, is what that is.”
Will makes a few half-hearted attempts at shuffling, but it soon devolves into commentary on the scenes depicted on the cards, Nico laughing loudly as Will deems certain situations “physiologically improbable” and “highly inadvisable.” Will’s not sure if he’s ever been so pleased with himself for making someone laugh before. There’s something about seeing Nico so uninhibited that makes him feel about ten feet tall. His stomach aches from laughing when Nico finally slides the cards back into the box.
“Oops,” Will says, snatching up a card that’s fallen to the floor. “You missed these guys.”
Nico’s mouth twitches as he surveys the card, seven of hearts. “What do you think, workplace safety violation?” he asks, turning the card to Will.
Will leans closer. “Definitely. Although… they are wearing hard hats.
Nico shakes his head, slotting the card in and closing the box. “Should I leave them in the desk for the next people to find?”
Will considers. “Maybe not. Imagine if someone’s kid opened the drawer, and –”
“Oh god.”
Half an hour later the rain isn’t splattering quite so hard against the windows, and they decide to make a break for it while they can. Nico makes one final sweep of the room while Will kneels at the door, tying his shoes.
“Oh hey, you forgot your glasses,” Nico says, snagging them from the corner of the nightstand where Will had left them last night.
“Oh shit, thanks.”
Nico raises an eyebrow, settling the glasses on his own face as he returns to the door.
Will feigns annoyance although Nico, of course, looks adorable in the glass. Will plucks them off Nico’s face when his partner is close enough. He folds them, slipping them into the pocket of his blazer. When he glances back up, Nico’s brow is furrowed, his eyes on the pocket where the glasses disappeared to, and Will feels a twinge of discomfort.
“What?”
“That – that’s a really strong prescription,” Nico says slowly. “You don’t usually wear contacts, do you?”
And Nico likely already knows the answer to that, considering their hotel-room proximity in the last month, both of their possessions spilled over bathroom counters and hotel room beds and floors, Will’s socks occasionally ending up in Nico’s laundry and vice versa.
Will groans inwardly. Instead of answering immediately, he opens the door, heading down the hall towards the elevator. Nico’s quiet, but as the elevator descends, he’s still watching Will with something like curiosity, or concern.
“I don’t like wearing contacts,” Will says, finally, as they reach the main floor.
“But you don’t like glasses either? I almost never see you wearing them.”
Will grimaces. “I – I know it’s stupid. Or vain, or whatever. I just don’t like the way they look.”
Nico regards him seriously as they take their place at the end of the line to check out. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Will rolls his eyes, batting Nico’s hand away.
They make one more stop at the continental breakfast after checkout, one last coffee for the road. Nico shifts so Will can fill his cup, securing the lid on his own coffee.
“So am I just like, kind of blurry to you all the time?” Nico asks, still teasing. “How do you manage to pick me out in a crowd?”
“I just look for the grumpiest short guy wearing a tie,” Will shoots back, unthinking, then – “sorry,” he says, because the words sound meaner than he intended, and something like hurt flickers over Nico’s face, But Nico’s shaking his head. “No, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have –”
“Kids teased me,” Will says flatly, because suddenly, unfortunately, it’s become a thing he needs to explain. “I know that’s stupid and I’m an adult and I should be over it, but…” he shrugs.
“No, I get that,” Nico says, softer.
“You’re not really that grumpy,” Will feels the need to say as they head for the front doors.
Nico huffs out a laugh. “It’s okay, Solace.”
::
The rain has eased a bit more now, and the two men jog across the parking lot in the misty drizzle.
Will’s given up on looking presentable at this point. He’s past due for a haircut, his curls have gone rogue in the humidity, and he doesn’t mind getting a little damp when all he’s got ahead of him is a two-hour drive. It’s clear that his partner doesn’t feel the same, but Nico flatly refuses Will’s offer to bring the car around and pick him up at the door.
Much to Nico’s dismay, the CD player is on the fritz in their fleet car. After his third attempt to get the player to accept Road to Ruin, they give up.
“Just put it back in the case,” Nico says glumly. “We might never get it out again if it does go in.”
Will does so, flipping to the radio. They’re not required to keep the police scanner on, but Will supposes they should at least check in and make sure they haven’t missed anything important.
There’s nothing at all for the longest time, and Will starts to doze to the sound of the static when suddenly there’s a crackle.
“Dispatch to all available units. We have a code 10-65, missing minor near Rockwood Forest. Repeat, missing minor near Rockwood Forest. All nearby units please respond.”
Will glances to his partner. “Missing kid?”
Nico’s brow furrows. “Yeah. Can you check on the location? I think we’re near there.”
Will presses the call button radio, leaning closer to the dash. “Dispatch, this is unit 215. We’re about 30 miles west of Argyle. Can you give us an ETA to Rockwood Forest from our current location?”
“Stand by, unit 215.”
The wipers are on low now, just an intermittent drizzle. Despite the damp and the low hang of clouds in the sky, it’s gorgeous out here, just starting to green up. Will finds himself itching to get out in it, inhale a few deep lungfuls of fresh, forest air. Hopefully be of some help, too.
The radio crackles again. “Unit 215, you’re approximately ten miles west of Rockwood Forest.”
Will glances over at Nico, who nods. Will clicks the radio once more. “Unit 215, en route.”
::
“Hey, it’s you guys!” Magnus brightens, making his way over to them through the crowd of officers. He squeezes Will’s arm, and Will pats him on the shoulder. Magnus takes a formal step back, back straight. “Agent di Angelo,” he nods, eyes sparkling. Nico rolls his eyes.
“So, what’s going on?” Nico asks.
Magnus heaves a sigh, shoving a hand through his hair. “Too much, honestly. We’ve got an escaped convict – there was a crew of prisoners from Morgantown doing some highway cleanup about a mile from here, one guy made a break for it. We think he headed this way. This is him.” He hands Nico a photocopied picture. “Then there’s a nine-year-old boy missing in the area as well.”
Will and Nico share a glance, concerned, and Magnus immediately shakes his head. “We don’t have any reason to believe they’re connected. Guy was in prison on some minor charges, he’s not believed to be dangerous. Kid seems to have wandered off from his buddies who were playing in the area. But it’s all-hands-on-deck until we find them both.”
Magnus hands Nico another photocopied sheet, a school picture of a young boy with a wide, toothy grin and shaggy dark hair. “Sam’s been out for a few hours already, no sign of either of them. The kid – Andy Torres – may or may not be in the company of his dog, who’s also missing.” He passes Nico one more sheet, a photo of the dog.
Will leans in, propping his chin on Nico’s shoulder for a better look. Nico elbows him in the ribs.
“Nice dog,” Will grins, taking a step back.
“Yeah,” Magnus sighs, frazzled, “husky-shepherd cross. Not considered dangerous. Answers to Chew-Barka.”
Will laughs. “Nice.”
Nico inspects all three pages of slightly damp paper before passing them to Will. “So. Where do you want us?”
::
Feeling more than a little self-conscious about it now, Will pulls out his glasses as they enter the forest. They are kind of necessary, in the current circumstances.
Nico’s gaze flicks over. “You know, they –” Nico cuts himself off, making a face. “The glasses. You look… good. In them.”
Will breathes out a laugh, embarrassed. “You don’t have to say that. But thanks.”
“I wasn’t just saying it.”
Will glances over to see his partner, eyes set on the trail, pink in his cheeks.
“But if you really don’t like them,” Nico adds, awkward but determined, “you could get some new frames, find something you like better. They have some really nice ones now. My sister just got some – they’re like, purple and… chunky.” Nico waves a hand vaguely in front of his face.
Will smiles, fond. “I don’t know if I could pull off purple and chunky, but yeah. Maybe you’re right.”
Nico’s quiet for a moment, the crunch and squelch of mulchy leaves underfoot. “Anyway. I’m sorry for teasing. I didn’t realize it was a sore spot.”
Will shakes his head. “No, it’s really fine. I’m just being stupid.” He makes a face. “And I’m – sorry I called you grumpy.”
Nico sighs, a little dramatic now. “You know, the more times you apologize for calling me grumpy, the more glaringly obvious it is that you’re not sorry for calling me short.”
Will laughs, loud. Nico’s still got his gaze set ahead of him, but there’s something pleased and satisfied in the set of his mouth that loosens the tension in Will’s shoulders. “You don’t wanna be good-natured and tall,” Will says. “That would make you too powerful.”
He makes a gentle, purposeful collision into his partner’s side on the narrow path and Nico rolls his eyes.
::
They’ve been tramping through the forest for almost an hour when Nico suddenly comes to an abrupt halt. Will, once more lamenting his choice of footwear, slips on the wet leaves underfoot and nearly bowls his partner over.
“Did you hear that?” Nico says, hushed.
They’re both silent for a long moment, blue eyes gazing into brown. All Will can hear is birdsong, water dripping somewhere nearby. Maybe several somewheres.
He pushes his hair off his forehead, and his hand comes away damp. He grimaces. His shoes are caked with mud, pants damp and muddy up to mid-calf. Nico’s looking equally damp, the bottom of his coat spattered with mud and a smudge of it across his cheek, dark eyes wide under a mop of dark hair. His hair has a bit of a wave to it, moreso in the humidity, a perfect, spiral curl just behind his left ear.
Nico shakes his head. “Fuck. I was sure I heard something. A voice.”
Before Will can even reply –
“Help! Somebody help me!”
“Andy?” Will calls.
Silence.
“This way,” Nico mutters, turning to lead Will straight through the trees, nothing like a path for them to follow. Will’s hot on his tail, shoes slipping on the slick ground, grabbing onto rough bark to steady himself.
There’s the sound of a dog letting out a sharp whine. They pick up speed, branches scraping at their faces, dead leaves catching in their hair. Will takes a damp tumble when he trips over an exposed root, knees muddy, but he’s up again a second later, pushing through the underbrush. They emerge from the trees onto the bank of a creek, trickling sluggishly through deadfall and muck. There’s a culvert, just visible, and then the sound of a few plaintive barks.
They approach the bank. It’s slippery with wet leaves and mud. It doesn’t look particularly treacherous though, just messy. Thankfully, the water below is shallow. Will half-climbs, half-slides down the bank. Nico follows, only slightly more graceful.
“Andy?” Will calls again, near the culvert. “Andy Torres?”
“Hi?” comes a boy’s voice in response.
The two men glance at each other. Relief.
“Are you okay in there? Why are you in a culvert?” Will asks, loud. Nico snorts and Will shoves him, nearly sending him sliding further down the bank. Nico grabs Will’s arm to steady himself.
“My dog ran in and he got stuck,” says a small voice after a moment. “Can you get my dad?”
Will smiles, half-listening to Nico, now on the radio to other searchers in the area. “Your dad should be here soon. In the meantime – my friend and I out here are FBI agents. We’re going to try to get you out, okay?”
“Yeah, okay,” the boy says, sounding less than enthused. Then he adds, “I’m really muddy. My mom’s gonna be mad.”
“Wait until your mom sees us,” Nico calls, dry. “We’re even muddier.”
There’s a giggle from inside the pipe.
They share a glance. “After you?” Nico says hopefully.
Will tilts his head, glancing first at the muddy culvert, then Nico. “You are smaller. Besides, someone should stay out here and um… wait for the others to arrive.”
Nico groans. “Fine.” He inches a bit closer.
Will scans the area critically. “I think we’re going to… here.” He carefully lowers himself to the creek bed, cringing as his already-muddy shoes fill with icy, stagnant water.
“Come on in, the water’s fine,” he says deadpan, and Nico grimaces.
They manage it, eventually, Will giving Nico a boost into the pipe, both getting even muddier in the process. The dark-haired man disappears into the hole in the bank grumbling to himself.
Half a dozen other agents, a couple of EMTs and Andy’s dad have arrived by the time Nico emerges with Andy and Chew-Barka in tow, and Will watches, amused, as Nico is roundly congratulated, probably receiving far more handshakes and thumps on the back in ten minutes than he’d like in an entire year. He finally makes his way back towards Will looking harassed but pleased, and they follow along near the rear of the group as everyone heads back towards the trailhead.
Andy, thankfully, doesn’t seem hurt in the least, and his high, excited voice carries back to them as he swings off his father’s arm, enumerating his adventures. Chew-Barka looks thrilled just to be along for the ride, repeatedly tripping up the search team as he attempts to make friends with everyone.
“That was a good morale boost,” Nico murmurs, a small smile on his face as they pick their way over a fallen tree.
“Yeah,” Will agrees. “Always good to schedule in a few of those.”
They trudge along in silence for a while, the group in front of them slowly drawing further ahead.
Will glances over at his partner. “Penny for your thoughts?”
Nico huffs. “Just trying to keep my shoes from getting wetter than they already are.”
“Good luck with that.”
They’re only walking for another minute when Nico speaks up, sudden. “Did you see his dad?”
Will blinks. “Whose dad? Andy’s?”
“Yeah,” Nico says, and then there’s a pause as they pick their way around a large puddle, anchoring themselves on branches alongside the path to keep from falling into the muck. “He didn’t seem upset with the kid at all, did he?”
Will frowns, considering. Andy’s dad had caught the little boy up in his arms and squeezed him like there was nothing else in the world. He thinks there isn’t anything quite like the relief on a parent’s face at finding their child is safe when they were worried otherwise. “Why would he have been upset?” Will asks slowly. “I know the kid wandered off, but… I think he was just happy we found him in one piece.”
Nico nods. “Exactly. That’s how – that’s what dads should be like,” he says fervently.
Will glances over, processing. Nico’s studiously avoiding his gaze. Then, “Oh,” Will says, soft. “Not like your dad?”
“No, he would’ve…” Nico shakes his head. “No. Not like mine.”
Will’s throat goes tight. He wants to reach out, but Nico picks up his pace, and Will does his best to keep up.
::
Several hours later there hasn’t been any sign of the escaped convict. The rain has stopped though, and the sky has begun to clear, trails of white fluffy clouds smudged above the treetops. Nico’s somewhat less damp, now, if nothing else. He hopes the lady at his regular dry cleaner will refrain from comments on the state of his pants.
The search crew are lingering around the trailhead, awaiting further instruction. Nico glances over to see his partner seated at a picnic table with Sam, dappled sunlight illuminating Will’s blond curls and Sam’s hijab, sky blue today. The two are chatting animatedly.
“Search is moving into town,” Magnus announces, making his way over to Nico. He’s looking a bit disheveled at this point in the operation too, but his gray eyes are bright. “There was a reported sighting. I just heard from Ramirez-Arellano though. She wants you and Solace to head back to DC. Says if you accumulate one more minute of overtime she’s sending you both on a forced vacation.”
Nico huffs. “Fine.” He can’t say he’s too disappointed. His back is aching and his toes are icy inside his wet socks.
“Keep in touch though, yeah?” Magnus says. “Sam was saying something about organizing another karaoke night.” He winks and Nico rolls his eyes.
Magnus heads back to the search crew and Nico crosses to the picnic table. Sam’s gone, but Will’s still sitting there, legs stretched out, eyes closed, face turned up to the weak spring sunlight. Photosynthesizing, maybe.
Nico stops in front of the picnic table, giving the wooden structure a light kick. “Hey.”
Will opens his eyes, already grinning. “Hey.”
“Hate to interrupt your tanning session, but Reyna wants us to head back. They’re moving the search into town, and we’re not invited.” Nico drops down beside his partner. His cold feet are throbbing.
“So rude,” Will sighs, dramatic. “I have some good news, though – look what Sam lent me!”
Will holds out a CD. Nico peers at it, then pulls a face. “Dawson’s Creek? Isn’t that the show with the teenagers with the huge vocabularies?”
“Nico.” Will shakes his head, solemn. “It’s so much more than that. Dawson’s Creek is a classic. Ahead of its time. Sam and I are going to watch the season finale together, in May. You should come!” Will nudges his leg with a muddy shoe, and Nico grimaces. Not that he can get much muddier.
“I think I’m washing my hair that night.”
Will sticks out his tongue.
Really? He’s almost thirty years old. He’s a doctor.
“Party pooper. Anyway, the soundtrack is really good. You’ll like it. We can listen to it on our next trip.” Will wiggles his eyebrows in a manner that’s probably meant to indicate that what he’s just proposed should be enticing to Nico.
Nico sighs, pained. “Fine. I guess.” He stands. His cold, wet shoes make a weird squelching sound, accompanied by a weird squelching sensation. Gross. “Let’s go. I wanna stop in town for snacks before we head back to DC.”
“Sure.” Will extends his hand.
Nico blinks at the hand, then at Will. “What.”
“Help me up,” Will says, as if that should have been obvious.
“Help you – why should I – why do you –” Nico sputters.
Will sighs. “Nico, we can argue about it, or you can just help me up.” He makes a grabby gesture.
“Oh my god,” Nico mutters, grabbing Will’s warm, large hand and yanking him to his feet. It does something stupid to Nico’s stomach and he drops Will’s hand quickly, shoving down the impulse to rub his own hand on his coat. Really, if Will’s hands are going to be so much larger than his, then surely Will should be the one helping Nico up, or –
Will smiles, all sunlight and freckles. Jerk.
“Andy was right,” Will says. “You are strong.”
“What?” Nico laughs, startled. He can feel himself going red, and he walks a bit faster up the path, attempting to position his flushed face out of sight.
“I heard him telling his dad,” Will grins, catching up easily with his stupid long legs. “All about the strong, brave policeman who rescued him.”
“Jesus,” Nico mutters, unable to come up with anything cleverer.
Will laughs, bright.
The car is parked about half a mile from the trailhead, and they make their way back through the wooded trail together. The sun is slowly beginning to warm the forest, and it smells lush and earthy, droplets of water sparking on leaves in the filtered sunlight. Nico’s dragging a bit after a long day, having trouble focusing on anything besides his wet feet, but Will seems energized, practically skipping next to him.
“I’m so hungry I could eat the north end of a southbound polecat,” Will announces, affecting a southern drawl. Nico snorts, and Will glances over, grinning. “That’s what my nana used to say,” he explains. A branch catches his hair and he pauses to untangle it.
“That’s a new one,” Nico mutters.
“Why, what would you say?” Will asks, still bouncing along next to him.
Nico makes a face. “I don’t know. I’m just hungry. I don’t feel the need to drag out colloquialisms about it.”
Will ignores this. “I’m so hungry I could eat my arm,” he says. “Or your arm.” He grabs Nico’s arm and squeezes.
“God, you’re so touchy Nico complains, batting Will’s hand away. They’re walking side by side, but it’s still obvious, the way Will wilts at the words, a dimming in Nico’s peripheral vision. Nico immediately internally berates himself.
The truth is he’s never been touched so much – at least not outside of romantic relationships. Or at least, not in his memory. He’s sure his mother was affectionate with him, but his memories of her are so hazy, more flashes of her smile, a vague memory of her presence in the house, comforting. And while Bianca was his best friend, his companion and sometimes caregiver, she was never easy with physical touch the way Will is. Nico never has been either. He never thought he particularly liked it, or wanted it. It's taken some adjusting to, as prickly as he knows he can be, but now that he has, he very much doesn’t want to be without it. And Will’s touch is so easy. Something generous. Unconditional. It makes Nico feel warm and grounded.
“Sorry,” Will says, chastened, the teasing gone from his voice. “I’m – I know I can be. I’ll back off.” Will moves a bit further away.
Fuck.
“I don’t – I don’t actually… mind,” Nico manages, feeling his face heat. “I was just – I was teasing. Sorry.”
Will glances over, still guarded. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah,” Nico says, embarrassed. “I might – I kind of like it. Actually.” he admits. His face is burning, but look. He brought this on himself.
Will beams, suddenly throwing an arm around Nico’s shoulders, hugging him from the side. It nearly knocks them both to the forest floor.
“Okay, okay. Nerd,” Nico mumbles, gruff. But he carefully slides an arm around Will’s waist, squeezing back before Will moves away, and okay. That’s kind of nice.
::
They make the short drive into Rockwood. It’s barely large enough to be called a town, Will thinks, and lunch options are thin on the ground. They park on the main street, leaving their muddy coats in the trunk before making their way across the street and up the block to a small grocery store. They exit soon thereafter with a paper bag brimming with snacks, wrapped deli sandwiches and two bottles of soda. Will glances at their reflection in a glass storefront as they wait for the town’s single traffic light to change. He huffs out a laugh.
Nico turns, cocking an eyebrow. “What?”
Will waves a hand towards the glass. “Just wondering how you manage to look artfully windswept after our trek through the woods while I look like I just crawled out of a trash compactor. Especially since you were the one who climbed through the culvert.”
Nico snorts, glancing into the glass. He preens a little and Will laughs. Will glances back to Nico himself, who’s gone a bit pink.
“You – you look fine, anyway,” Nico says, gruff.
Will grins. The light changes and he follows Nico across the street. There aren’t many pedestrians around to begin with, and both men glance up automatically as a man passes them, crossing the street in the opposite direction.
They pause mid-step, halfway across the street. Realization seems to dawn over Nico at the same time as it does Will.
Nico scrambles to pull out the papers that Magnus gave them hours ago, his eyes wide.
“Was that –”
“Fuck.”
A quick glance at the photocopied picture of the escaped convict and both Will and Nico hurry back across the street the way they’d come.
“Edward Michael Corrin?” Will calls.
The man whips around to look at them. His eyes go wide and he takes off at a sprint.
“FBI, stop where you are! Nico yells. If anything, this makes the man run faster.
“I hate running,” Nico groans, cursing and taking off after Corrin. Will sadly abandons their bag of snacks, dropping it as carefully as he can before racing after his partner. Nico may not be tall, but god, he’s fast, and Will’s quickly out of breath.
The town of Rockwood borders right on dense woods, and that’s where Corrin seems to be heading. Will grimaces, thinking ruefully of his already-wet feet and muddy clothes.
Will’s just finished calling for backup as he sees Nico disappear into the trees, maybe 50 yards behind Corrin. The guy’s got a lot of life left in him, considering he’s been on the run all day.
The land here isn’t quite as wet, but it’s rocky and uneven. Will’s pace is slowed immediately as he tries to find a safe way through the woods. The forest here is mostly deciduous, thankfully, just the barest hint of new leaves on the trees. Otherwise, Will thinks there’s no way he would have spotted his partner, halfway up a sharp incline. Nico’s gasping for air, leaning forward with hands propped on his thighs. Will reaches him a moment later, clutching at a stitch in his side.
“I think I lost him,” Nico manages, breathless. “Fuck, I hate running.”
Will breathes out a laugh, sharp. “Yeah, it‘s not my first choice either.” His lungs are burning, but he manages to force himself upright, shoving hair off his sweaty forehead and scanning the landscape. “You didn’t see which way he went?”
Nico shakes his head, still catching his breath. There’s a rip in the shoulder of his jacket.
“Should probably keep climbing,” Nico manages, tilting his head towards the top of the hill. “Might get a better look from up there.”
Sadly, he’s probably right, and they make their way up, breathing hard. The rocky soil underfoot might make for good footholds under other circumstances, but right now the rocks are slippery with rainwater and dead leaves, and Will nearly loses his footing several times, finally resorting to crawling rather than climbing to the top of the hill.
“Where the fuck is everyone?” Nico breathes as they reach the hilltop. It’s dotted with birch up here, too, but the trees are thinner.
Will glances around, chest heaving. “Maybe – there?” He points across the little plateau they’re standing on, because he’s sure he’s just seen movement, a flash of color…
“Where?”
Not enough breath for conversation, Will grabs Nico’s chin with a sweaty hand and points him in the right direction. Nico blinks, startled, but there’s no time to argue, because –
“Oh fuck, that’s him.”
And Nico takes off running again. Will groans, one more deep breath before following. Where are the others?
At least he’s no longer fighting his way uphill. The ground up here isn’t quite as rocky, and Will makes better progress than he had been.
“FBI, stop where you are!” Nico yells again. Corrin doesn’t, but in the next second, Nico’s somehow right on his tail, then he’s got the other man by the shoulder and then they both go down. There’s a brief tussle, but by the time Will catches up, Nico’s got Corrin’s hands behind his back, fumbling for his handcuffs.
“Nice one,” Will gasps, crouching down to help. Nico pulls Corrin to his feet just as the other agents crest the hill, Sam and Magnus in the lead.
“Nice of you all to finally show up,” Nico says, breathless.
There’s a blur of activity. Corrin is led down the hill. Nico takes a few minutes to debrief Magnus, but finally they head back towards the little town they’d left so suddenly. They don’t talk much as they make their way back over the rocky ground, finally emerging from the trees into late afternoon sunlight.
“Oh hey, our snacks are still here!” Will exclaims as they round the corner, spotting the paper bag he’d stowed next to a mailbox. “Thank god, because I could, quite literally, eat your arm at this point.”
He quirks an eyebrow at Nico, who rolls his eyes. “Oh – you’re bleeding,” Will frowns, grabbing his partner by the arm and turning him.
“It’s fine. Sam gave me a bandaid.”
“Let me –” Will ducks his head, trying to get a better look. Sure enough, there is a bandaid at the corner of Nico’s forehead, right at his hairline. A dark lock of hair has fallen over it, might even have done a good job concealing it, if not for the trickle of blood.
“Nico, it’s not fine. There’s literally blood running down the side of your face.”
“Just a flesh wound.”
Will rolls his eyes. “That doesn’t mean you – here. Sit. I’ll be back with the first aid kit.” He grabs both Nico’s shoulders, guiding him firmly to a bench.
“Will, I can make it back to the car, it’s just a cut,” Nico complains.
“Yeah, I know, but the light’s better out here. Just stay put. And give me the car keys.” Will gives him a stern look, holding out his hand, and Nico finally slumps, acquiescing.
Will shoots a glance over his shoulder to make sure Nico hasn’t moved as he hurries back to the car, popping the trunk. He’s been trying to push it aside as best he can, but images of Nico collapsed on a motel room floor, rapidly losing consciousness, seem burned into his brain. The way Will’s heart had plummeted when Nico had stopped responding, gone limp under his hands. The interminable drag of minutes as Will waited for the ambulance to arrive, counting Nico’s every breath.
Nico casually bleeding from a head wound isn’t particularly helping matters. Will takes a moment for a few deep breaths, for whatever good that might do, before heading back up the street.
Nico’s waiting for him, looking mollified or disgruntled, Will’s not sure.
“Okay, let’s take a look,” Will says, settling himself next to Nico. He opens the little med kit, cleaning his hands and then pulling on gloves. He offers the hand sanitizer to Nico as well, who holds out his hand obediently as Will squirts a blob into his palm.
“Can you hold your hair back?” Will asks.
Will carefully peels the bandaid back, blood already soaking through the fabric. It’s a jagged cut, nearly two inches long and still bleeding freely. It could probably use a few stitches.
“Jesus,” Will mutters. “How did this happen?”
Nico’s nose scrunches. Sitting this close in the sunlight, Will notices a scatter of freckles across the bridge of his nose. “Not sure. Might have been a rock.”
Will gently tilts Nico’s head to the side. “Did Sam see this when she gave you the bandaid? Why didn’t she take you to the EMTs? They were right there when the guys carted Corrin off.”
Nico makes a small sound in his throat, noncommittal.
“Nico?” Will frowns. “Did Sam tell you to see the EMTs?”
Nico glances over, cagey. “I told her you’d look at it.”
Will huffs. “Seriously? And were you planning on mentioning that to me?”
Nico shrugs, and Will gets to work cleaning out the cut, his jaw set. Nico’s gaze flicks over to him a few times, but he stays quiet.
Finally Will shakes his head, dabbing at the still-bleeding wound. “I can put a Steri-Strip on this, but I’d really recommend getting it stitched instead.”
“But you can do it?” Nico says, hesitant.
Will sighs. “I can. If the other option is putting a bandaid back over it and oozing blood all the way back to DC.”
Nico grimaces. “Can – can you do the Steri-Strip? Please?”
“Fine,” Will says, short. The trouble with human bodies is that they’re so fucking fallible. All that blood, right under the skin. Bones that break and hearts that stop and the smallest, stupidest choices that can put you six feet under. Will grits his teeth, throat tight.
“You’re angry at me,” Nico says quietly.
Will blinks, pulled from his morose contemplation.
“What? No.” He shakes his head. “No, I’m really not. Sorry.” He carefully secures one side of the Steri-Strip to Nico’s forehead, applying gentle pressure with two fingertips and holding gauze against the wound with his other hand. “I’m just going to hold this here for a minute and make sure the adhesive sticks before I secure the other side.”
Will’s eyes flick to his partner, who’s watching him with something like wariness.
“I’m not mad,” Will repeats. “I’m just –” he trains his gaze on his gloved fingertips, pressed to his partner’s forehead. Nico’s blood slowly soaks through the gauze, shocking red against the white. Will takes a deep breath. “I almost lost you on our last case. Gotta be more careful this time. Right?” His voice comes out clipped and hoarse.
“But that wasn’t your fault,” Nico says slowly. He’s still holding his hair out of the way, and he swaps one hand for the other, taking care not to jostle Will’s fingers.
Will grimaces. “Wasn’t it? I read the autopsy report on the first victim. I performed the autopsy on the second one. And then I let you order pizza, and I left.” He hadn’t had the space to give it much thought at the time, but in the ensuing days it’s weighed on him more and more. It seems baffling how quickly they moved on from it. Baffling that they’re both still here, alive and breathing.
Nico’s brow creases. “But that’s – I read the autopsy reports too, Will. I didn’t put the pieces together either. And besides, if you hadn’t left, we’d probably both be dead.”
Will shrugs. “I think this side is adhered now,” he tells Nico, avoiding his gaze. “You’re just going to feel some tension and then I’ll secure the other side.”
“Okay,” Nico says quietly.
Will finishes applying the Steri-Strip, then carefully tapes a square of gauze over it. He clears his throat. “I don’t think it’s going to bleed too much more, but the gauze will take care of it if it does.”
Will takes a deep breath, finally turning his gaze to Nico, who’s watching him with those big, dark eyes, his expression solemn. Looking at Nico from inches away like this is a bit like gazing directly into the sun. Will glances down instead, peeling off his gloves and discarding them with the trash in the can next to the bench.
“Any other open wounds I should know about, before I put the kit away?” Will asks irritably.
“No,” Nico says softly.
Will begins packing away his supplies. His hands are clumsy, though, his heart beating too fast, and he fumbles the gauze and then the baggie of cotton balls. Nico pulls the kit and all its accessories out of Will’s hands, packing everything away and handing it back wordlessly.
“Thanks,” Will mutters. He sighs. “Look, I didn’t mean to bring that up. I didn’t mean to make things awkward. Can we just forget about it?”
Nico watches him for a long moment. “I don’t know,” he says finally.
Will can still feel his pulse pounding in his throat. “You don’t know?”
“Well, I –” Nico lets out a breath, sharp. “Look, I’m not good at…” he waves a hand vaguely. “Talking. But I think – look. This job has certain risks, right? And we know that going into it. And if anything ever happened to me, because of this job – this job that I choose to do – I would never want you to blame yourself. Not even if, say, you think you missed something. Or even if you fucked up – which you didn’t, incidentally. But I would never want you to carry that with you. Because this job is my choice, and I accept the risks that it involves. Okay?”
Will lets out a breath. “I mean, that’s easy to say but…”
Nico nods. “I know, but –”
“But obviously I’d never want you to blame yourself either,” Will says, “if anything ever happened to me.”
“Well.” Nico suddenly looks conflicted. The waning sunlight catches on his dark hair, his long lashes, a flash of gold. “That’s different.”
“What? Why –”
“Because I’m never going to let anything happen to you,” Nico says smoothly, his lips quirking.
Will stares at the other man for a moment, his throat going tight. “Yeah? That’s your grand plan?”
Nico shrugs, smug. Will manages a laugh. “You’re such a nerd.” Will restrains himself, just, from throwing his arms around his partner’s neck and sobbing into his shoulder.
“Fine. Then I’m not going to let anything happen to you either,” Will says, as light as he can.“And in fifty years we’ll be like… chasing down perps together with our walkers and canes.” Will feels his face warming at all the possible implications of that, but Nico only laughs, looking pleased.
Will stands, holding out his hand to his partner, who accepts it. Nico’s hand is warm. It fits nicely in his. Will pulls Nico to his feet.
Will leads the way back to the car, unlocking it and passing the keys to Nico, who still has a quietly please look on his face.
“You wanna solve crimes with me when we’re old and infirm?” Nico asks, light.
“Well,” Will huffs, stowing the med kit in the trunk. “Not if you can’t be bothered to tell me when you’re actively bleeding,” he can’t quite resist saying.
But Nico just grins. “That’s probably something I can work on.”
There’s a light chill in the air now, at the day’s end, but the car is sun-warmed and cozy inside. Will’s very much looking forward to staying seated for a couple of hours and finally eating something.
Nico starts the car and then pulls down the sun shade, flipping open the mirror. He wrinkles his nose. “Not so artfully windswept now.”
Will glances over and grins. “I don’t know. I think you can pull it off. I especially like the bloody bandage. And the leaves.”
Nico huffs, tilting his head. He plucks several dried leaves and a small twig from his hair.
Will watches, fond. “You missed a couple,” he says, and when Nico can’t quite locate them, turning his head this way and that, Will can’t help himself. “Here,” he says, leaning closer.
Nico stills, but Will’s committed now, stomach fluttering with nerves despite the fact that he’s just spent the last twenty minutes in close quarters patching up Nico’s head. It feels as if there’s something more private about the car, though, and this is distinctly less medical. Less necessary.
Nico’s hair is soft, silky. Will’s fumbling fingers take a moment longer than they should to extricate the leaves, and he can feel his face warming in the process. Nico smells a bit like sunshine, a bit like the fresh forest air, and under all of it, the comfortingly familiar smell of Nico. It doesn’t help Will’s butterflies.
“Got it,” Will says, finally, a little rough, holding up the leaves in demonstration. He lowers the passenger side window, letting the leaves flutter out onto the street outside.
There’s a rather loaded silence following this interaction and it’s truly ridiculous, Will thinks, the way his heart is pounding in his chest.
“I really need a haircut,” Nico mutters as he starts the car.
Will huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, same.” He ducks his head to inspect his reflection in the window, shoving a few errant curls out of his face.
Will finds a radio station that’s acceptable to both of them, and neither speaks much more until the exit signs for Baltimore begin flashing past in the twilight.
“Actually –” Nico glances over at Will, then away.
“Hmm?”
“If you wanna take a quick detour into Baltimore, I’ll treat you to a haircut?”
Will’s face must betray his confusion, because Nico immediately goes red, turning back to the road. “Sorry, that sounded really weird,” he laughs. “My um – my sister. Half-sister. She lives in Baltimore. She always cuts my hair for me. I could use a trim, and we’re in the neighborhood – forget it, though. I’m sure you want to get back to DC.”
“No, that actually sounds great.” Will actually has very little desire to get back to his empty apartment. Kayla’s away overnight, and the Wednesday night TV lineup is usually a bore. He grins, poking Nico in the shoulder. “I can’t believe you’re going to introduce me to your family already. It’s only our tenth case-iversary.”
Nico scowls. “I changed my mind.” He moves to bump the cruise control back up.
Will laughs, loud, grabbing Nico’s wrist to pull it away from the cruise. “No, no, I’m sorry. I would love a haircut. I promise I’ll be good,” he adds, because Nico’s looking pained.
“Anyway, it’s our eleventh case-iversary,” Nico mutters a moment later.
Will blinks. “You’re right,” he realizes. “I forgot about the spaceship.”
Nico snorts.
“What’s the gift, for the eleventh case-iversary?” Will wonders aloud.
“Haircuts,” Nico says, dry.
Will nods, serious. “Right, right. Tenth was shitty take-out coffee.”
Nico shakes his head, looking harassed, but he drops his speed again. “Case-iversary,” he mutters under his breath, disparaging, as he exits the freeway. Will laughs. ___
It’s fully dark by the time they park on a quiet street in the heart of industrial Baltimore. Nico turns off the car and then pauses, not unbuckling his seatbelt yet.
Will shoots a glance in his direction. “What’s up?”
Nico looks uncertain. “Um. Just – my sister –”
“Hazel, right?”
Nico looks surprised. “Yeah. You remembered.”
Will shrugs. “It’s kind of an unusual name. Pretty.”
Nico watches him for a moment, then nods. “Yeah,” he says. “So – she lives with her boyfriend, Frank. He’s great. They’ve been together for ages. Actually, he’s my star researcher – remember he did the background check on Robert Marcus?”
“Oh, Frank Zhang, right? Perfect, I already love Frank,” Will smiles.
“Me too. He’s fantastic. But then there’s their roommate, Leo.” Nico scrunches his nose. “He’s… well, he can be a lot. Just so you’re forewarned.”
Will nods. “Okay, noted.”
“He actually – he’s the one who gave me those playing cards.”
“Oh, I see,” Will laughs.
“Yeah. Nico rolls his eyes, unbuckling his seatbelt.
Will closes the car door, stretching. He glances down at himself, brushing off as much of the dried mud as he’s able to. Nico joins him on the sidewalk, does the same.
“Ready?” Nico asks.
Will swallows, more nervous than he thinks he probably should be. “Yup. Bring it on.”
Nico pauses, his gaze softening as it flicks over Will’s face. “They’ll like you,” he says.
::
There’s a shriek as the door opens, and Nico is immediately enveloped by a woman several inches shorter than him with a fluffy cloud of golden-bronze curls. “You should have told me you were coming by,” she exclaims, then turns to yell over her shoulder, “Frank, have you ordered the pizza yet? Can you get extra?”
Hazel’s eyes light up as she catches sight of Will, hovering awkwardly just beyond the doorway. “You must be Will!” she exclaims, reaching out to shake his hand. Will smiles at being so enthusiastically received then smiles a little more, just to himself, at the surprise of Nico’s hand, pressing low on his back as the other man ushers him into the apartment. The small touch is reassuring, immediately making him feel more at ease. As much as Nico denied it, Will knows that he can be too touchy.
“You’re not allergic to dogs, are you, Will? Or cats?” Hazel asks.
“Or hamsters, or lizards?” comes a deep voice in the background. “Hi, I’m Frank,” says the man attached to the voice, sticking out his hand with a warm smile. He’s tall, burly, with close-cropped dark hair and a kind face.
“Frank works at an animal shelter part-time,” Hazel explains, somewhat apologetic as Will toes off his shoes and an enormous orange cat approaches, sniffing the muddy cuffs of his pants. “He brings home a lot of strays.”
“Oh, is that what we’re calling me now?” asks a third voice, and another man crowds into the already packed entryway. He’s about Nico’s height, and wiry, with a head of brown, glossy curls. He grins widely at Will, giving him an appreciative, very obvious once-over, then turning to Nico. “Is this your skeptical partner? He’s hot.”
Nico scowls. “You can fuck all the way off,” he mutters to the newcomer, then turns to Will. “I’m so sorry. Please feel free to ignore him. I try to.”
“Nice to meet you, Will. I’m Leo.” The man sticks out his hand, offering a toothy smile. Will reaches out to grasp Leo’s hand. “The moon landing was faked,” Leo adds, his smile never faltering.
Will can’t tell whether he’s supposed to laugh or not, and he ends up just kind of awkwardly staring.
“God,” Nico mutters, grabbing Will by the arm and dragging him further into the apartment. “Hazel, we actually came by to see if you had time to cut my hair – and Will’s,” Nico says, sounding a little guilty. “I know I should have called first, but we were in the neighborhood and –”
Hazel’s face lights up. “I would love to cut your hair, Will,” she says, stepping closer and beginning what feels like a clinical inspection of Will’s head, rising on her toes and tilting her head from side to side. Will tries very hard not to feel like some sort of a medical specimen. “And yours too, Nico,” she adds as an afterthought, reaching out to examine a curl at Will’s ear more closely. “Will, what’s your curl regimen?”
“My um – what?”
“Your curl regimen,” Hazel says, deadly serious. “What products do you use?”
“I –” Will blinks at Hazel. “I wash it? And um… sometimes I use a little gel?” He looks helplessly at Nico, who looks like he’s trying desperately not to laugh.
Nico nods, solemn. “It’s true, he does sometimes use a little gel. I’ve seen him do it.”
Hazel’s brow furrows. With disappointment, maybe? Will suddenly feels very guilty for something, though he can’t quite get a handle on what that might be.
Nico sighs. “Sorry. Hazel gets a little excited about curly hair. It’s kind of her thing.”
Hazel turns to stick her tongue out at her brother and then, thank god, ceases her inspection of Will’s head. Hazel’s brow furrows as she takes in Nico’s appearance.
“What on earth did the two of you get up to today?” Hazel asks, sounding worried. She plucks a leaf from Nico’s hair that Will must have missed earlier, her eyes going wide at the hint of bandage half-hidden under Nico’s over-long bangs. Hazel brushes the hair back from Nico’s forehead. He makes a face but doesn’t flinch away. “Oh no, what happened?”
“Well, actually,” Will says, “Nico completely saved the day.”
Nico’s gaze flicks over to him, pink in his cheeks. “I absolutely did not.”
“You absolutely did,” Will says. He turns to Hazel. “We were heading back to DC after a case, and we got a call about a separate incident while we were on the road. Missing dog, missing kid and missing convict. There were at least a dozen other agents on the case, but Nico managed to personally find all three of them.”
“Nico, really?” Hazel squeals. “That’s amazing!” She throws her arms around her brother.
“Well, when you put it that way,” Nico mutters as Leo claps him on the back and Frank nods approvingly.
“You mean when I describe the events exactly as they occurred?” Will grins. Nico shoots him a smile, a bit bashful. Hazel’s gaze flicks between the two of them with a level of interest that makes Will a little nervous.
She gives Nico a squeeze around the waist. “Come on, big brother. You can tell me all about your heroic deeds while I wash your hair. We’ve got time to give you a quick trim before the pizza comes, and then I can do Will’s afterwards.”
Will thinks Nico looks a bit reluctant to leave him with Frank and (probably more accurately) Leo, but he follows his sister and they disappear down a hallway together.
Frank leads the way into the main living area, he and Leo settling themselves in easy chairs. Will sits on the floor against the couch as a dog shyly approaches, sniffing delicately at Will’s hand when he extends it. She’s medium-sized, possibly some kind of a lab mix (Frank introduces her as Summer) and she climbs into Will’s lap, turning in an awkward circle before curling herself into a ball and tucking her head against Will’s stomach.
Leo is certainly a lot, as Nico described, but he’s easy enough to talk to. Soon he and Will are engaged in a friendly debate on flat earth theory, Frank sitting quietly in the background and occasionally shaking his head good-naturedly.
“I’m not saying I believe you could actually walk off the edge of the earth,” Leo is saying, his eyes bright, “but you have to admit they make some compelling arguments. And to be perfectly fair, I haven’t tried it myself.”
Will, who’s been trying hard not to laugh, finally allows himself a proper grin aimed at Nico as the dark-haired man returns to the main living area. Nico shoves a hand self-consciously through his now much-shorter hair, smiling to see Will sprawled on the floor against the couch, Summer still curled in his lap and a three-legged gray cat tucked under his arm. Nico lowers himself to the couch at Will’s shoulder.
Leo grins, jerking his chin towards Will. “He’s like a fucking Disney princess.”
“He sure likes to sing like one,” Nico complains and Will grins, his gaze flicking up to his partner. He sees the gauze has been removed from Nico’s head.
“Can I take a look at –” Will motions to Nico’s forehead and Nico leans forward obligingly, so Will can avoid dislodging the cat and dog.
A light touch to Nico’s temple and Nico leans his head closer. Will nods approvingly. “It looks better now. I think I did a decent job,” he says, a little relieved.
“You’re a forensic pathologist, Will?” Frank asks.
“Yes,” Will says, surprised. “These days the most medicine I do is autopsies. But Nico was kind enough to let me practice on a living specimen today.”
Leo and Hazel laugh. “I never should have brought you here,” Nico says, an amused look.
Will grins up at him, unrepentant. Frank looks to be thinking something over, a worried pinch to his brow.
“I know you’re not a vet,” Frank begins,“but would you mind taking a quick look at Otis later?”
“Sure,” Will agrees immediately, then suddenly hopes that Otis is, at least, a mammal. “And Otis is…?”
“A dog,” Frank says, looking relieved. “He’s got this infection under his ear. I’ve been doing my best with it, but I’d really appreciate a second set of eyes on him. I know you’re not really trained to –”
“No, it’s okay,” Will interrupts, smiling. “I’d love to take a look at Otis. I agree. It’s always good to get a second opinion.”
The doorbell buzzes, and Leo carries the pizza in a minute later, setting boxes on the table as Hazel follows with a stack of plates. Will fills his plate and moves back to the floor at the foot of the couch. Hearing a huff next to him a moment later, he laughs in surprise to see three more dogs sitting in a line, avidly watching the progress of his pizza from the plate to his mouth.
Hazel rolls her eyes. “Just ignore them, if you can,” she tells Will, attempting to (mostly unsuccessfully) shoo the dogs to their beds. Frank, looking a bit shifty, explains that while city bylaws generally prohibit having quite so many pets in a dwelling, he’s found certain ways to circumvent this.
“It’s okay, Frank,” Nico says. “He’s not that kind of cop.”
Frank looks a little relieved, dropping into a chair with a plate of pizza in one hand and a one-eyed tuxedo cat tucked under his arm. A second cat, this one a brown tabby, immediately hops gracefully into his lap.
“Definitely not,” Will assures Frank, grinning at the two cats simultaneously head-butting the man in the chair, Frank attempting to hold his pizza safely out of the way. “Anyway, you’ve certainly got the room for it here. This place is amazing.”
It really is. The apartment is impressive, the main living area a loft-style apartment with high ceilings and huge, arched, floor-to-ceiling windows. A mish-mash of pleasantly mismatched but comfortable-looking chairs and couches are scattered throughout the space, along with a large collection of dog beds, and several of the most elaborate cat trees Will has ever seen. In the corner, what looks like a crib mattress is occupied by something large, shaggy and weathered-looking. A dog, probably; whatever it is is lightly snoring.
Frank brightens. “Thanks. My dad owns the building, so our rent’s pretty cheap, and he’s willing to overlook the fact that this place isn’t really zoned as residential. We’ve got plenty of room for the pets and all our side-hustles. Hazel has a little salon in the back, and Leo has a workshop. The door to the kitchen is right where you came in, and that hallway there,” Frank points, “leads to the bedrooms.”
“I’d be happy to give you a tour,” Leo grins, leaning forwards in his chair. “Of the bedrooms.”
Will blinks.
“That definitely won’t be necessary,” Nico says firmly.
Hazel laughs, her arms raised over her head as she ties her hair out of her face. “If you’re finished eating, I can cut your hair now, Will.”
Will is, and Hazel leads him down a hallway into a small space that’s been converted into a salon, a long mirror and two styling chairs.
“I’ve heard lots of good things about you,” Hazel says casually as she drapes a cape over Will’s shoulders. Is my brother treating you well?”
Will wishes she wouldn’t say those words in quite that tone – but maybe he’s just imagining unasked questions. Regardless, his face warms, and he hopes Hazel won’t notice.
“Nico’s great,” Will offers. “He really knows his stuff. I’m learning a lot.”
“That’s good to hear.” Hazel efficiently spritzes Will’s hair with water, shielding his face with a hand at his forehead. “He can be a bit stubborn sometimes. Doesn’t always like following rules.”
Will laughs. “We make it work. We don’t always agree, but we can usually find a way to meet in the middle.”
“It sounds like the two of you make a good match,” Hazel says, reaching for a comb. “Professionally speaking, of course.”
“Of course,” agrees Will.
Hazel does her best to make a case for Will growing his hair longer and letting her teach him a decent curl regimen. He politely declines, citing a lack of time for grooming as well as the general vibe of the FBI.
“I understand,” Hazel says, sounding a little regretful. “You have beautiful curls, though. You let me know the second you decide to grow it out and I’ll set you up with products.”
“Will do,” Will agrees as Hazel begins snipping. “So, do you see a lot of clients here?”
“Yeah, I do,” Hazel says. “It’s been really busy the last couple of years. I have a lot of regular clients – and then I’ve got a ton of government and corporate contracts right now. Everyone’s in a panic about Y2K.”
Will blinks. “You’re – sorry. I’m assuming the government contracts don’t have anything to do with cutting hair?”
Hazel laughs. “No. I guess Nico didn’t mention – I have a degree in computer science – as well as my cosmetology license.”
“Oh, wow, that’s fantastic.”
“It keeps me busy,” Hazel agrees.
“I bet. And can I ask – the government contracts are for –”
“Oh.” Hazel rolls her eyes. “Paranoia, mostly. Government agencies and big corporations are afraid that when the millennium hits, all their computer systems will fail. Mass chaos and panic, you know?”
Will nods. He’s seen some Y2K compliant stickers on some equipment at work – he stuck one to Nico’s forehead the other day as he passed by his desk – and he’s heard some buzz in the media, but he honestly hasn’t been paying a lot of attention.
“I heard about some guy somewhere in the midwest who wants to go into his bunker on New Year’s Eve with two hundred hamsters – he’s planning on using them as a self-sustaining food supply,” Will says, remembering a newspaper he’d been reading to Nico on a recent road trip.
Hazel laughs. “I’m not surprised. Leo’s been trying to convince us to build a bomb shelter out in the woods. Honestly, the chances are it’s all going to be a bit of a letdown for everyone who’s so worked up about it. But everyone wants the appearance that they’re making an effort, right? They want plausible deniability. The contracts are out there – so I take them on, fix up the code, and keep pulling in the big bucks,” Hazel moves to stand in front of Will, checking her work.
“That sounds like a win-win,” Will says.
Hazel shrugs. “I think so. It makes Frank a little uncomfortable, knowing all this work is being done and all this money is being spent when it’s not really necessary. But someone’s gotta do it. And once the millennium turns over and everything is fine, Frank and I might finally be able to buy a big property in the country.”
Will’s eyebrows rise. “Oh yeah? That sounds amazing.”
Hazel smiles. “Yup. Frank can rescue as many dogs as his heart desires and I can finally have horses.”
Will glances up at Hazel’s face in the mirror, seeing the same expression on her face when she mentions horses as Nico has when he gets started on cryptids. Will smiles. Hazel’s engaging and kind, and Will finds himself warming to her quickly. Sure, Nico has those same qualities, sometimes in abundance, but it’s quieter. You have to work to get there, with him. With Hazel, it seems to be all on the surface.
Will’s back in the living room not long after, dropping onto the couch beside Nico, who’s scanning over a newspaper. Nico glances up from his reading in surprise, reaching out a hand to Will’s hair and brushing his fingertips over it lightly before seeming to catch himself.
“Looks good,” Nico manages, looking a little embarrassed.
Will grins. “Thanks. Hazel does good work. What’re you reading?”
“Oh.” Nico passes the paper over. “These guys –” he gestures around to the others in the room, “put out a monthly newsletter. I was just getting caught up.”
Will glances at the cover, scanning over headlines including Criminal Whalers Exposed and Teletubbies Mind Control??.
Will blinks, then flicks a gaze over to Nico, surreptitious and questioning.
Nico appears to be fighting a smile. “It’s mostly Leo’s brainchild, as you might have guessed. But it is actually a group effort. Frank’s research is amazing, of course – you know, government watchdog stuff.”
Will nods, grinning. “I have no doubt.” He flips the newspaper open.
“You can have that copy if you like,” Frank offers.
Will nods his thanks. “You guys have some great side hustles going on here. Coding, journalism, top-tier research –”
“And Leo,” Nico mutters.
Hazel bumps Nico with her shoulder, hard enough that he collides gently with Will on his other side. Will bumps him back.
“We all love Leo,” Hazel says.
Leo beams, and Nico almost audibly rolls his eyes.
“He can fix absolutely anything,” Frank adds. “He’s our robotics expert. He actually built the cat trees,” Frank gestures over to the massive structures at the other side of the room. Will notices now that they’re bolted securely to the wall.
“Cool,” Will nods. “And the animals are very cool, of course,” he adds, as Summer makes her way back into his now-available lap, stopping to touch her cold, wet nose to his before settling back in. “Did I see lizards in the back?” Will asks, scratching Summer behind the ears. He’s pretty sure he saw a lit tank in a room somewhere along the hallway.
“Yup,” Frank says proudly. “That’s Pancake. He’s a bearded dragon. We’ve got a bit of everything here.”
“Everything but birds,” Leo says, and before Will can answer he adds, serious, “because birds aren’t real.”
“Oh my god,” Nico mutters. He glances at Will, who nods. “We should actually get going.”
“It’s been a long day,” Will agrees. It’s hard to believe that it was just this morning that he and Nico were laughing over Leo’s x-rated playing cards.
The whole group of them crowd into the entryway to bid Will and Nico goodnight, Hazel throwing her arms first around her brother, then Will. Will hugs her back, surprised, but pleased. He has to admit, Hazel is nothing like what he would have imagined a sister of Nico’s to be.
“Come by any time, Will,” she says warmly. “Oh wait - here’s my card.” She presses it into his hand. “You won’t find anyone who does curly hair better. I cut your hair from now on,” she says, just a bit too intense, and Will suddenly sees the resemblance between the siblings, vividly.
“Yes please come by any time,” Leo adds, somehow making the words sound more suggestive than Will would have thought possible.
Nico scrubs a hand over his face. “Valdez, please don’t scare him away,” he says weakly. “I like this one.”
The door closes behind them and Will follows Nico to the elevator, grinning. “You like me,” he teases.
Nico snorts. “Yeah, don’t let it go to your head, though. It’s only our eleventh case-iversary.”
(chapter 6 here! Please note chapter 6 is split into two parts)

Notes:
1. It's another chapter already! I didn't think I'd get it out so fast, but this one wasn't in bad shape. The updates will slow down at some point because there are still big chunks I need to write from scratch. 2. I can't even remember how long this thing is because at some point it got so large I had to split it into separate docs. It might be 200k total by the end? 3. Thank you SO MUCH for reading and thank you SO MUCH for your comments. They really keep me going <3 4. Thanks once again to @rosyredlipstick for the beta. Thanks also to @anything-thats-rock-and-roll and @snoelledarts for allowing me to borrow their pets/friends' pets :)

So I was watching an episode of the mentalist because I remembered an early episode featured an example of a trope I'm planning to talk about, but it's been years and I wanted to jog my memory.
And my God I don't think I've laughed so hard at bad disability rep in a long time, i actually started to cry from laughing so hard. I don't think the writers of this show have ever even so much as looked at or been in the vicinity of a wheelchair user and oh my God it shows 😂
Perp 1: *holds a gun to the back of perp 2 who is pretending to be in a wheelchair to get through a train station unnoticed*
I'm sorry, what? I can not even go to the train station in my wheelchair without a staff member, at least one member of the public and usually at least one child approaching me. Wtf was that plan? You know what, if they'd fake claimed the guy using that logic I might have let it slide because that's a plan only able bodied people would come up with lol
___
Jane (main character): I bet they didn't even check your references
Perp 2: nothing says trustworthy like a wheelchair
oh fuck, I missed that memo! Can someone tell that to the recruiters/employers in my area? I think they missed it too (legitimatly, I once heard a recruiter on Tik Tok say they won't hire wheelchair users because they always "end up making something and suing us for discrimination" and im fake-claimed every time i leave the house because im young, which this guys was too, but yeah, nothing says trustworthy and inconspicuous like a wheelchair lol)
___
Perp 2: 6 months I was in that chair and no one questioned me! Why did you?
What world is this because it's certainly not the real one. You're telling me he somehow avoided being fake-claimed for 6 months? Even casually? No little old ladies came to yell at him for being a young person in a wheelchair? No one asked if he really actually needs it? I'm a bilateral amputee and even I don't escape fake-claiming, and I have no legs!
Jane: I've been looking at the feet of people in wheelchair users (that's really weird dude lol) for years and your shoes are scuffed, that's what gave you away!
I...do I need to explain this one? Even my non-ambulatory friends have scuffs on their shoes from transferring and bumping into shit (he does that like 5 minutes before this scene too), and ambulatory wheelchair users exist. This was such a ridiculous reason that even the TV tropes entry about how this episode uses the faking trope has a snarky comment calling this reasoning BS. It only does it on one other entry that I saw and it's to refer back to their previous snarky comment about this show lol.
___
This was 10 minutes. It wasn't even the whole episode, it was like the second to last scene 😂
Also, I'm just curious where this guy faking needing a wheelchair got a high-end, custom made wheelchair from? You cant just buy them, they are fitted to you by a specilist. Even if he did find one to just buy, the brand he has was worth about $1,000 to $2,000 USD at the time this aired. I hope this scam was going to pay well lol. Every other show from this era put their wheelchair users in cheap hospital chairs, why is the guy who's faking the one time you make an exception to that?

@jegulus-microfic // august 12 // prompt: jealous // words: 669 // mentions of alcohol
The music is loud, almost unbearably so, which means Regulus has to lean into Evan's personal space to talk to him.
"I'm gonna get a drink!" He yells into his friend's ear. When Evan nods in acknowledgment, Regulus moves away from the dancefloor and towards the living room where he can breathe a little easier. When a hand touches his elbow, he startles, but he relaxes again when he sees it's only Evan.
"Sorry, did you also want a drink?" Regulus asks. The music is not as loud anymore, so he doesn't have to get all up close and personal with Evan anymore.
Evan, though, seems to not have gotten that memo, because he drapes an arm over Regulus' shoulder, leaning in to talk into his ear.
"No, but I thought it would be funny to see how much we can rile Potter up. He's in the corner practically seething."
Regulus turns around so fast he swears he feels something pull in his neck. And sure enough, there is James Potter. The strobing lights cast his warm skin in shades of pink and blue. Regulus watches him for a moment, and James watches him right back. There's undeniable tension there, but Regulus can't quite put his finger on it, his thoughts slowed with alcohol.
James has a death grip on the neck of his beer bottle and Regulus is surprised he hasn't shattered it yet. He's curious enough to go investigate, so Regulus shoves Evan off him and ignores his cackle as he makes his way over to James.
To investigate.
Obviously.
"I never pegged you for a jealous man, Potter," Regulus says in lieu of a greeting.
"Please," James scoffs with a roll of his eyes, "I'm jealous of the spoon that feeds you soup because it knows what your teeth look like."
Regulus startles at that. James blinks back at him.
"Shit, sorry, was that too much? My brain-to-mouth filter is on holication," James slurs. "Wait. No, vacaday." He frowns at the floor, seemingly trying his best to get his words right. In the end, he simply settles for, "Away."
Regulus clamps a hand over James' shoulder and steers him towards the kitchen. "Let's get you some water, shall we?"
James only smiles at him dopily, happy to go wherever Regulus goes. Because James wants to be near him. Because that's a thing, apparently. Because James gets jealous of other men being near Regulus. And God, if that doesn't make warmth unfurl in his stomach.
The kitchen is empty, so Regulus easily maneuvers James to the sink and grabs a cup from the drying rack before filling it up and handing it to James.
"There you go, Potter, a nice cool glass of water."
James simply blinks at him, as if he's not sure how he got from the living room to the kitchen. He's about to turn around again when Regulus grabs his wrist, gently holding it to keep James from wandering off.
A sigh, bone-deep and weary, even though Regulus is just a twenty-something-year-old wrangling a drunk guy at a party. He wishes Sirius were here to do this instead, but both Sirius and Remus had conveniently disappeared about 20 minutes after the party started. Regulus rubs a hand across his forehead. "James, please just drink the water. You'll feel better."
"Oh, I like that," James hums. He sways a little, unsteady, but dutifully reaches for the glass.
"Yeah, I bet," Regulus says, happy that James is finally cooperating a bit.
"No, I like when you call me James," he says. "Sounds nice, James."  The small smile curving up the corners of James' mouth turns sloppy and mindless, as if the mere mention of his name in Regulus' voice is enough to make happiness overflow. And oh, if that doesn't do dangerous things to Regulus' heart.
"Drink your water and I'll call you James however many times you want."
"And when I'm sober?"
"Yeah, James, I'll call you by your name when you're sober, too."

Scrimbly Jacqueline 40/50: Mel and Jacqueline commit a felony; are caught and apprehended by the mutually agreed upon "hottest magibean alive"
🫧🌊💙❄️☃️
"Closed as well?" "So it would seem." "Damn! What is UP with that?! Why is every apothecary specializing in poisonous ingredients CLOSED?!?! Don't they know we have a guy to kill and also maybe even a whole ass cult, too?" "Apparently they didn't get the memo." "Oh! What about that one you and Lucy frequent?" "Beg pardon?" "You know! The apothecary with that lady you like—" "NO! Absolutely NOT. We will not be going there. God. Every time I go in there I leave absolutely mortified, and that's assuming I don't faint again." Jacqueline snorted, a hand quickly coming up and covering her mouth as Mel whipped around and glared, thunder rumbling in the distance. "Sorry, sorry! I just...AGAIN?!" "Well at least I am AWARE enough of my crush to faint about it." Jacqueline's shoulders fell as she hissed through clenched teeth. "Ouch. You cut deep, Mel. You cut real deep. It's cool though! I get it. Getting you to Lizzy to use your charm and good looks to score us some men-who-write-their-sevens-weird-ending poisons and then some is not plan A or B." "Or C or D and perhaps not even Z. Really? That was your plan?!" Jacqueline shrugged. "It was like, last ditch plan. I mean, the alternative is to wait but the longer we wait, the longer weird sevens guy is hitting up Luce and that simply won't do." "Absolutely not at all. God. Have you seen them? How he writes his sevens?" "YES! Jack showed me. It's so freaking WEIRD!" "Right? We simply cannot let this go on, I'm afraid. Hmm." Mel tapped her chin. "What to do, what to do..." "Okay. I've got one more idea," Jacqueline said, watching as Mel paced back and forth in a small circle, her skirt dripping a bit. Her brow was furrowed; she tapped her chin as she paced. "But I think you will like it even less." Mel stopped pacing. "Oh?" "Let's go see Chimera." Mel blanched. "Oh dear god. You want to go do what?!" "See Chimera! I mean, look, Mel. She's the poisons guy, right? You wanna get rid of someone, she's your go to." "You want me to go to someone objectively hotter than any other aforementioned apothecary to get the things we need to take care of this creep?" "She is pretty damn hot. I'd say like, top hottest magibeans for sure." "And what, you want to go and just knock on her door? Stop in for tea, a chat, and leave with a goodie bag of potions and poisons?" "Yes?" "No. Nope! Not at all. There is no way I'd survive that." "Well. You got me there. She is pretty terrifying. May actually kill us. Hmm. Okay, okay. Hear me out." "Oh, absolutely! Agreed." "Not what I meant but yeah, you're so right." "See? I'm already flubbing it up!" "Flubbing?" "Jacqueline!" "Sorry! Sorry. That's just a really fun word! I'm gonna steal that one. Flubbing. RIGHT! OKAY! Focusing." She took a deep breath in and squished her cheeks, taking a moment to compose herself. "Hear me out, Mel. What if we just...break and enter?" Mel looked visibly relieved. "Yes, yes. That I can do. I'll go fetch my harpoon and—" "Oh, no need! I think we can handle it sans harpoons." Winking, Jacqueline raised a glowing hand, wiggling her fingers. A conniving little smile spread across Mel's face as she lifted her own glowing hand in agreement, the pair of magibeans cackling into the night as they poofed, disappearing on the spot.
🌸🧪❤️
Moments later, the pair of them stepped right over the walls with a snowy and watery assist. They landed on what looked to be plant free ground, the water pooling back into Mel's skirt as Jacqueline waved the snow onto hers, freezing it in place with a very brief clenched fist. Grinning, the pair high fived one another, sticking close as they wandered down the path. The deadly plants were gorgeous. Some of them stretched high above the pair, towering over the leafy poisonous plants. Poison ivy and oak twirled together, stinging nettle abound. The paths and gardens stretched on, beautiful deadly flowers dotting the greenery with blues and yellows and reds, some plants growing fruits and berry looking things that were, quite obviously, very poisonous. "Whoa." "Watch the nettle, Jacqueline." Jacqueline stepped back, keeping even closer to Mel. "Right, right. That's one of the little stingy bitches." "Quite stingy, actually. Now, let's see. Where did I put that list..." Mel patted herself up and down, reaching into her watery sleeves and letting out a little "A-ha!" as she pulled a slightly damp rolled up list out of the left one, unfurling it quickly with a deft flick of her wrist. "Right. Here's what we need to—" Mel looked up, finding herself face first in icicles and crunchy hair. "Jacqueline! A little warning next time you come to a dead stop—" "Uh..." Poking around Jacqueline's shoulder, Mel blanched. In front of them stood Chimera herself. She looked down at them (Blimey, she's tall, Mel thought), arms crossed, her face unamused. An ear twitched. Behind her, her snake tail poked around her, looking at the two of them in what may have been a perplexed way, or an annoyed way. "Dear lord. She's even hotter in person." "Mel!" "...I said that out loud, didn't I?" "You sure did." Jacqueline cleared her throat. "Hi! Chimera! Uh...fancy seeing you here?" She winced, scratching the back of her head. "Right. Well. I mean, it is your garden so..." She raised an eyebrow, hands moving to her hips. "Well, since Mel's being honest," (Mel herself colouring behind her snowy friend), "I may as well too." And, taking a very long, very deep breath in, Jacqueline launched full speed into the most rambling explanation possible. "So basically Mel and I need to kill a guy. He's been bothering Luce and he writes his sevens weird and she told us to not kill him but he writes his sevens weird, not to mention he's like, a HUGE creep. HUGE! Lucy was all "don't kill him he's just being nice" but Mel and I disagree. So we went hey, what about secret murder! Not as obvious murder? Lucy doesn't need to know, and BOOM! POISON! So off we fucked, but all the local places that have the poisonous shit we need were closed, so I suggested we come see you, but both Mel and I are super intimidated because you're like, one of the hottest magibeans we know of, so we thought it'd be easier to break in? To your garden? Of poisons?" "Is that so?" Mel and Jacqueline (the former still hiding behind the latter) shared a look between each other. A mutual shrug. Jacqueline turned back to Chimera. "Yeah, that about sums it up. He's really very creepy." "A grade-A creep," Mel added. "Who writes his sevens weird." "And basically STALKED the woman!" "So now we need to kill him." Chimera tilted her head. She let the two woman sweat for a bit before grinning. "You had me at kill a guy."

So @lmelodie gave me this idea a HOT MINUTE ago and it ah, it has spiralled. It's one of three, y'all. This one was from LAST WEEK but between a visit home and the World's Slowest Cold, I wasn't able to post it proper until TODAY lmao.
I have also stolen @kscribbs's little guy ONCE AGAIN and she'll be hanging around for this lil trio of scrimbles once more, lol.
AND AS A BIG HUGE DISCLAIMER RE: THE LITTLE SMILEY SNIPPET: I HAVE 100% FUDGED WITH EVENTS OF MILLER'S LAW TO MAKE THIS SCENARIO WORK, AND I AM SURE BOTH MEL AND MERA MAY BE SLIGHTLY OOC, SO MY APOLOGIES FOR THAT. I HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS, THOUGH, AND I HOPE YOU ALL DO/DID TOO. I AM HAVING A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS, TBH!
I just never considered the potential of these three? Hanging out? And then I did and. Well. Here we are!
Chimera was so fun to draw! I was staring at the sketch in awe after I finished it like "woah. I did pretty ok!"
I think she actually has stripes now? But I was using lmel's GORGEOUS art of the woman and neglected to cross check the recent Chimera post until AFTER the ink had dried so. SPOTS FOR NOW I SUPPOSE!
Anyway, enjoy! Stay healthy. Wash your hands, etc etc. It's like a bonafide swamp of sicknesses out there right now and I do NOT wish the World's Slowest Cold on ANYONE. It sucks. I thought I was better Monday, went to work Tuesday, came home and absolutely DIED. Been home since. Fingers crossed tomorrow is a healthy day! We're coming up on Turkey Day Weekend in Canada and I'd like to go see my family and drown myself in mashed potatoes without fucked up tastebuds 😎😎😎

so my relationship with the Beatles is complicated when I was like 11 I think I was really into the Beatles, but not in like an actual way in the way where I would go and like look up like songs on YouTube and I was like this is crazy this is some good stuff but not like to where I knew anything that wasn’t uploaded on YouTube already in 2000 whatever I don’t know how old I was so I probably like 2012 2013 anyways I’ve never been into them like on a actual level so I was like kind of anti-beetles for a while like literally so I was really into the Beatles and I was like 10 or 11 and then I turned 13 and I was like fuck the Beatles dude fuck these guys and yeah, there was kind of it. I think it was because I got really into like the punk scene then like not the scene like the actual punk scene this was after I was anyways, so I was like anti-beetles and like to be honest, I didn’t really start listening to like 60s music The Monkees, can you go back? I didn’t start listening to 60s music until I started listening to The Monkees before that it was like 70s 80s and late 70s but yeah I was in like modern Indy so I wasn’t really like the Beatles apart from like my joking, kind of hatred of them, they weren’t really on my radar fairly recently so I guess like two years and then I was like the monkeys and that’s it nothing but but obviously you know the Beatles have close proximity to the monkeys. Some could say. Oh my God when you say. It makes a period sometimes OK so I’ve never really been into the Beatles in a real sense and I know I probably should be at this point in time like it’s inevitable. It took me so long to get into Bob Dylan too, sorry and even now like I’m into him I guess but like not a ton or like not to the extent of you know everything else enjoy his music. I’m not like really super pilled unless it’s like funny. I think it would take a lot for me to get into the Beatles because it took a lot for me to get into Bob Dylan even though I really liked the band I was like I don’t give a fuck about Bob Dylan and I did I do now but he’s not like my top, you know old man if I’m being serious we’re talking about the Beatles so I should record these voice memos at this point and then upload them but I’ve already spoken all this out so I’ll keep going actually no I’m gonna go record. This is a voice memo, but I’ll still post this in case you want to read.

syn -> a handsome stranger hears you crying over a breakup in the middle of the night, and wants to help.
(modern college students) connie springer x reader
beware of.. violence, heartbreak
Tumblr media
you sat on the balcony of your apartment, curled up and holding yourself while sobbing silently.
as of recent, your boyfriend of three years broke up with you with the assumption of you cheating.
of course it wasn't true. you had eyes for him and him only.
the only time you'd really go out was to study with some classmates or see your friends that went to a different college.
that didn't stop him from believing you were cheating on him.
he proceeded to curse you out something serious over the phone, calling you a slut and worse with his friends.
it had gone on for the entire of yesterday and even shifting into the next day.
the name calling was overwhelming.
you sniffled, before letting out another nerve-racking sob.
you knew you shouldn't be crying. everyone around warned you about how he could get.
how toxic the man was.
but you loved him. you didn't let rumors bother you.
maybe you should have let that flip a switch.
a few knocks on your floor shook you from your thoughts. was it the apartment below?
"hey. you alright up there?" the man asked loud enough for you to hear.
it must've been the new guy that moved in recently.
"y-yeah. sorry for the noise." you responded, wiping your face and sniffling a little more.
"it's cool.. can i ask why you're crying?" the man continued, shifting around on his own balcony.
you paused for a second, before squinting at the bars that protected you from falling.
"just a stupid break up." you muttered, leaning back onto the bars.
"oof. maybe i can come up to help you feel better? i just got some mcdonalds and i've got extra." the male suggested, shaking the bag.
who were you to reject this offer?
~
after a few minutes, your doorbell rang and you scrambled up to go open the door.
your midnight visitor stood before your door with a smile, holding up the bag of food to you.
"hey. i'm connie." he introduced, holding out his hand.
you shook it with a soft smile, stating your name with a wavering voice.
you moved to the side and let connie in, gesturing over to your comfortable couch.
he walked over and took a seat, watching you close the door and take a seat next to him.
"did you recently move in?" you asked, watching as he began to lay out the food onto the coffee table.
connie nodded, smiling at you. "i'm from ragako. came to shiganshina to study computer science." he stated.
you nodded, gratefully taking the burger handed to you.
"so you go to the uni that's close by?" you asked, taking a bite and looking at him.
he nodded, eating some fries. "what about you? you in school?" connie asked.
"yep. same college." you responded, leaning back into the comfort of your seat.
you didn't want to mention the fact that your now ex-boyfriend also goes there to this handsome stranger.
but it seems he got the memo, and picked up a burger for him to eat.
"wanna talk about that shit head you were crying over earlier?" connie asked, taking a bite.
thus, you poured your heart out to him. and connie actually listened to you intently.
he made no comment as you spoke about your relationship, just nodding in acknowledgement.
when you finished, connie leaned back and hummed quietly.
"damn. he really sucks." connie muttered, looking at you.
you muttered a short 'tell me about it' while taking a sip of the smoothie in your hand.
"that's okay though, 'cuz you've got a real man to help you out." connie joked, flexing his muscles.
and for the first time that night, you laughed with connie.
maybe you wouldn't regret accepting this young man's offer to come into your house.
~
it had been about two months since you met connie, and the two of you had begun going to school together on days the two of you had class.
you had also gotten closer, figuring out that connie was studying computer science and occasionally did modeling.
it was how he sparked up a few hundred thousand fans.
today was thursday, so you didn't have any classes. connie had a nine am class so he wasn't in the building.
the two of you had plans to crash out in his apartment to have a movie date after he finished his assignment.
so you were in the kitchen preparing some things to take downstairs to his place.
a few knocks on your door made you raise your eyebrow, looking over at the time.
it was only 10:05, too early for connie to be home from class without notice.
you know you hadn't ordered anything, so you pondered on who it could possibly be.
you waited for a bit to see if there would be another knock, and there was.
you groaned internally and made your way over to the door, looking into the peephole.
it was your ex-boyfriend standing at your door.
your heart sank in your chest. you frowned before placing the latch onto the door and opening it.
what was he even doing here after calling you all those names.
"what are you doing here?" you muttered, looking at him through the crack of the door.
"hey- uhm.. can you let me in?" he asked, looking at you with a nervous smile.
you rolled your eyes and fixed your posture, taking a deep breath before beginning to speak.
"you can say whatever you need right here." you replied confidently, looking at him with a raised eyebrow.
his jaw visibly clenched as he stared at you. he was getting upset.
that never mattered though. you finally had enough balls to face him, and you were not backing down.
"don't be like that. just open the door. i wanna take you back." your ex began, trying to force the door open.
the latch jingled a bit, so you pushed your whole body weight onto it in order to close the door and lock it.
flimsy fucking lock, it was beginning to come off again.
your ex broke it during one of your fights, and you could never seem to get it back to how it was originally.
because of how you slammed and locked the door, your ex began yelling angrily through the door.
he threw insults and death threats shamelessly, before threatening to kick down the door.
with how week the latch for the door was now, you weren't exactly sure he wouldn't get physical with you if he gets in.
so you picked up your phone and dialed connie's number quickly.
after two rings, connie answered. "hey. i'm still in class." connie responded quietly.
the confusion was clear in his voice.
"i'm really sorry but- my ex is at my front door and i don't know what to do." you whispered quietly, pacing up and down in your hall.
it got silent, before loud shuffling could be heard.
"i'm on my way." connie said quickly, before hanging up.
you paced back and forth for another few minutes, as your ex had finally began his kicking at the door.
you grabbed a kitchen knife and stood there, anticipating it.
until it never actually came.
loud grunts could be heard from outside of the house, tumbles and more.
you looked through the peephole and seen ash brown hair in the view. what was happening on the floor was unseeable.
you opened the door slightly, and an unfamiliar man was on top of the man.
the ash brown haired man was standing by the door panting, watching it all go down.
"hey. you alright?" he asked, looking at you with worry.
you nodded, watching as the man on top of your ex boyfriend effectively broke his nose with a loud crunch.
"hey, eren you can stop." jean said, pulling the other man up by his hood.
'eren' wiped his nose slightly, before standing up and fixing his clothes.
"get the fuck outta here and don't come back." eren huffed out, fixing his clothes and watching as the male scattered off.
eren leaned against the wall and sighed, looking at you from the corner of his eye.
"so you're the girl he's been talking about." eren stated with interest, raising his eyebrow.
"eren shut up." connie said, catching everyone's attention.
he looked like he ran a marathon.
jean laughed quietly, shaking his head and taking a look at you.
"yeah she's a keeper. we're out." jean said, punching connie's shoulder and heading the way he came with eren in tow.
"don't you wanna maybe wrap your hand?!" you called out before they could fully make it out of sight.
eren held his hand up as a goodbye and got into the elevator.
you frowned and looked at connie, who was rubbing his forehead.
"sorry i didn't get here earlier." connie muttered, pulling you into a hug.
"it's okay. who were they?" you asked softly, wrapping your arms around him.
"my friends. jean and eren." connie responded.
you nodded. you had to admit, connie had some good friends.
there were a few guys that wouldn't even think about going to help out, like your neighbors.
"so.. are we still on for later?" connie asked sheepishly, pulling away.
you laughed and nodded, smiling softly at him.
"why wouldn't we be?" you asked teasingly, nudging him.
~
the hours later, the two of you were lounging in connie's room watching maybe the fifth movie.
he sat on the floor by the edge of his bed while you sprawled out on the comforter.
your eyes were focused on the tv screen, not noticing connie's lingering eyes on you.
"hey." connie called out, saying your name with confindence.
you looked down at him and raised your eyebrow, smiling.
"i just wanted to let you know i'm always here for you." connie said, looking at you with the softest eyes possible.
in response, you nodded and took his hand into your own. you didn't know where this was coming from, but you were sure he was just thinking over everything.
it'd become a common practice whenever he was around you.
"even if you don't like me anymore. i'm always here. to help, to talk to, anything." connie muttered, pressing his lips against your hand.
"thank you connie. i appreciate it." you cooed quietly, pressing a kiss onto his temple.
he nodded, before giving his focus back over to the movie.
connie was glad to always be your support, but maybe he wanted something more.
something intimate with you.
he wanted you to be just as infatuated with him as he was with you.
