My final thesis on Gale bitch-boy Hawthorne

It’s no secret the majority of the fandom would like to pay Gale a visit and pull out his guts, but is it entirely for the right reason?

Yes I massively understand how his hand in the design of the bomb that murdered Prim and the flippant way he did anything but apologise with his heart and soul to Katniss can really create an itch. To Katniss, we know Prim was absolutely everything, the sun and the moon, to her and she had trusted Gale for so many years to help her keep her sister shining as bright as their world allowed only to have him be the so said ‘cause’ of her death an absolute betrayal both of trust and character. Even if Prim wasn’t in the field, the idea itself is already so morally wrong that you would probably slap the thought out of your head. He tries to dust it off as necessary to a war when Katniss sees the plans but was it, really? Prims death is not souly Gale’s fault at all but we see why Katniss reacts so strongly too it, her hunting partner of four years, her fellow squad member, one of the two people Katniss considered friends, she trusted him with her sister, asking him to keep her alive if she didn’t make it in the Games and to have him even sticking a pinkie in the plans of Prim’s demise. Another point that is mentioned in the books is that he didn’t order the bombs to go off and he couldn’t as he was trapped, with no communication nor knowledge within Katniss’s struggling squad but the incentive is all the same. The worst moral crime Katniss (and thereby, the reader) could think of and attributes it to him who doesn’t say anything and leaves her for a better life for himself while she is at the helms of the skirt of reality.

His entire character in mockingjay was really unfair. When Katniss has the audacity to make another friend, who more so understands the turmoil inside her head, he acts cold about it, dare one say, childishly. He does earn a small redemption point when he defends Peeta after his first interview but we don’t know the motives. He distances himself from Katniss and acts like it’s her fault, failing to realise there is a gap there, one that came to be after the end of her first Games but he wilfully tried to ignore. He hunts with Katniss, arguably their only common ground in the events of the book after their families appear reasonably safe. Gale’s goals appear to prioritise winning the war and can’t except when Katniss doesn’t share that, focused more on Peeta’s absence and coming to grips with being a doll for another child which only aligns with his when Peeta is back and she sees that she loves someone who she decides no longer exists and runs away, into Gales arms, his lips which he sadly says doesn’t really count like by that point he still hopes but is wearing off the delusion. He makes an off centred remark about why Katniss cares so much for her prep team that causes yet more fissures in the chasm between them which is interesting when only moments before, they acted as two bodies/one mind. When he offers to kill Peeta during the active war, it’s viewed (most likely) more to him as putting down a rabid dog with rabies learning to cope around the illnesses, picking up the pieces when Katniss refused, still seeing the humanity in Peeta even purely out of delusion. Gale attempts to read her stance on the situation and is incorrect or could it be he truly somewhat cared for Peeta by proxy of Katniss, when he defends him to her? Yet later on he proves how well he knows hee during his conversation with Peeta where the point that she will only choose who proves their use to her which is both callous and utterly correct which annoys Katniss immensely and presents his fear of no longer being relevant to her.

Catching Fire, kissing her, not a cool move and claiming he ‘had to do it at least once’ means nothing. He sees the difference in his friend but ignores it as he knows that there are things Katniss has survived without him, feeding their family and general life no longer the case. He strives to stay relevant to her so she doesn’t start relations with her Co Victor and Mentor, who can understand way more than he can. But as the mining quotas increase, his opportunity decrease, only one day a week he is allowed with her, in their sanctuary. He relies on Katniss, begrudgingly, to make sure his family have available food and necessary items, like he promised Katniss to do with her family had she not walked out. Gale, in his own blind way, manages to gaslight Katniss into assuming she loves him after watching her perform a whole romance with Peeta that help keeps him alive, which she waits a while to bring it up to him. The fact that it’s never mentioned they the Hawthornes attend dinner/lunch at the Everdeens house could allude to his sourness or something weirder as when he is recovering from being whipped, there is no mention of his family. I know it’s stated that there’s bad snow but they aren’t mentioned at all maybe showcasing the separation in Katniss’s mind between Gale and his family. When he is whipped, all three D12 Victors impose none other than for what Gale means to Katniss and help until he is discharged to Ms Everdeens care and Katniss sits by his side and holds his hand as he sleeps, eventually kissing him, assumingly safe in the knowledge he will never know but he does.

In the Hunger Games, Gale and Katniss’s relationship is way better defined and more jokey, friendly like. They have inside jokes, shared goals and fears, same responsibilities. They have the same pressure but the moment Katniss is at the risk of greeting death, again, he tries to tell her to come back by saying killing an animal and human are still the same basic principle, seeming to already accept the barbarism the Games command without setting foot in the arena, perhaps for holding the opinion that what he does is harder as the main provider for a family of five. He understands the Games concept exceptionally well but the moment he has to attribute real people too it in any way sympathetic, he is unable and unwilling, removing the savagery of core human kind and our individual core beliefs they make us human in our own right. He drags Prim away from the scene of her big sister volunteering to essentially die for her, as a salute to Katniss in a way of sorts, demonstrating how he protects what’s hers.

We learn that all along he had romantic intentions, going so far as to want children, towards Katniss that she was as blind as a bat too and he loved the closed off version of Katniss that was his who had time in her life to smile, such as the incident when Gale realised he minded. He doesn’t make any move, reasons unknown but he punishes her for it anyway in a way over the series, for not choosing him, for loving a Merchant, Traitor, liar and other. For choosing the bakers kid over him even with all Katniss and Peeta went through together. He doesn’t seem to like Peeta but not hate him as seen at points made early on, it’s likely he envies Peeta and is jealous over Katniss or he knows he loosely owes Peeta for getting Katniss home, a debt he understandably despises and wishes it to be left unpaid such as Katniss not thanking Peeta for the bread.

To conclude; Gale is emotionally constipated and immature and a slight romantic. Katniss has a rather cynical outlook on everything in the world and acts so much older than she is, already weighed down with life and she seems to understand the childlessness that want is, never seeming to entertain an out to a life she gets thrust into. Gale seems to think he can use this to get an advantage which he can’t but he shows immaturity over it and relentless that Katniss doesn’t have the passion for. He can’t seem to read a room. Doesn’t weigh in morality and logic in the same scale. He’s 18/19 during the series and still seems to be a bit behind a 16/17 year old in the terms of world view. His hope for a life with him and Katniss sort of protecting his mind from some of the rougher life aspects. He seems to fully mature when the bombs drop but acts the opposite to Katniss with hurtful yet accurate statements directed to her heart left, right and centre.

Black/Racial Coding Doesn't Equal Racial Stereotypes

I can not believe we live in a society that genuinely believes racial coding = 'stereotypes but woke'...

Y'all, racial stereotypes are overexaggerated and meant to generalize a group as a whole....

Yes, racial stereotypes are technically coding, but that doesn't mean racial coding itself is based on stereotypes. [Think square = rectangle but rectangle =/= square.]

If it was all the same, you can not create any characters with a race because anything can be a stereotype by their POV.

Gave your white oc straight hair? "Racist. Not all white people have straight hair."

Gave your black oc dark skin? "Racist. Not all black people have darker skin."

Your character comes from a place with a language other than English, and they dare speak in that language? "Racist. Not every person knows their home language."

All of these rebuttals in isolation are correct, but context is extremely important. Yes, if someone claims an entire group of people have to look like XYZ to be a certain race, that's stereotyping. Making characters who happen to have very common traits among certain races, specifically the one they're meant to represent, is not.

You can literally spin anything into being racist if you view characters with this amount of malicious intent.

Getting so butthurt over someone simply calling a character X-coded (especially when it's confirmed and extremely obvious) is so incredibly dumb.

Getting mad at people critical of an X-coded character because there's no traits for people to actually connect the dots (without reading an outside source) is also extremely dumb.

TLDR: Racial coding is simply giving characters traits to represent a certain race. Racial stereotypes are still coding, but that doesn't mean racial coding itself is inherently stereotypical. Otherwise, every depiction of race is a stereotype and/or racist.

im honestly a little surprised i never noticed this before but the way that geto (who thought that his best friend was killed and saw a girl he was essentially willing to uproot his life for get murdered right in front of him) tries SOO hard to stay calm while toji's talking and then the MOMENT he brings satoru up again and trivializes riko's death, suguru loses it. i'm thinking suguru let him talk in the first place despite the risk of letting toji reveal his pact (and wanting to kill him Very Bad) cuz he figured it would be better to understand toji's deal since he beat satoru, something that suguru trusted would not happen

but then he starts referring to satoru strictly as "the six eyes", and i think that suguru, one of the few people that saw satoru as a person beyond his cursed technique or his family name could not help but get super pissed abt toji's dehumanization of satoru (and riko too, who he only refers to as the star plasma vessel). i just thought that it was very interesting....... suguru cared so much and it makes me CRAZY AS FUCK.

like, to begin with i think its sooo so interesting that suguru made it a point to be considerate of all the human parts of satoru despite the fact that im sure most other people assume he doesn't need to be worried about. i'll never stop thinking about suguru asking if he needs a break since he's overusing his technique, telling him he worked hard after getting back to the school, trying to rush to his side after he's been stabbed and being conflicted when satoru tells him to leave with riko and kuroi... he didn't just assume satoru could handle all that shit on his own cuz even if he could have he shouldn't have to.

also related omg im almost done i promise but!! the scene where suguru gets to the star religious group and sees satoru again for the first time...

the way that he can't even believe his eyes, probably in part because he's acting way different but also because he thought he FUCKING DIED. and he had to drag himself out of the tomb of the stars and probably went to look for gojo's body before even going to shoko. and then he had to tell her he couldn't even find his body man WHAT THE FUCK!!! i think maybe saw a twitter post about this part in particular but he might have thought toji took riko's body and satoru's, so the thought that he went all the way there thinking he'd have to see two dead bodies of people he cared about... ugh. suguru geto i love you

Kaiju No. 8 Fan Comic Expansion

A written scenario from the comic I drew. It’s more like a self insert OC x Gen Narumi thing. More oc than anything.

Word count: 1.58 K (Last time I wrote this much was my 5th grade hetalia fanfic lmao)

Arriving in Japan’s hot summer only to train for less than a month for the auditions is crucial for Persephone. It was her only chance to escape all of the negative people and memories from her old country; moving to the country of Kaiju seemed like a haven for her.

Unlike the average person who wishes to become a JAKDF officer, she had connections to high-ranking officials in her youth.

In her first year of high school, she won a scholarship program to live in Japan for a year to study their culture and history. The citizens never knew peace when it came to Kaiju. It was her first time learning about what that word meant. Her host sister and Persephone wanted to go grocery shopping, but they were in the crossfire of Yoju Kaijus crawling around. Persephone rose to distract the Yoju in a crisis, buying her sister time to run away and hide. Her unruly brown locks hit across her face as she uses the reptilian-like Yoju’s scales as a shield and blade. She was effectively damaging the Yoju’s legs, immobilizing them. Before Persephone could give it a finishing blow, the officers from the First Division arrived. They were impressed with the potential growing inside of her, a simple business card was handed in case the future of hers were to change and work for them. To their wishes and her unfortunate circumstances, it became true.

Scoring a spot for the First Division is no easy feat. It’s where the best of the best reins to protect its fellow citizens. For Persephone to be a foreigner, many eyes were on her. She knew that coming to Japan would have a lot of high expectations on her, even if she wasn’t that fluent in the language the aura around them was tense. It was orientation for all of the new officers joining the division. Persephone stood in the front row as Captain Gen Narumi and Vice Captain Eiji Hasegawa welcomed them.

Seeing Hasegawa in a professional light was a bit jarring for the woman to perceive but she adapted quickly as he will now be one of her bosses rather than a guardian. Narumi is a recently instated captain. He was known to have a more casual air around him but all the officers treated him seriously and professionally. Hasegawa reminded her before the ceremony about Narumi; informing her that they were both similar with high aptitudes before wielding a Kaiju’s part. Hearing it from the tall gentleman, it was clear that she would be just as talented and powerful as The Captain of The First Division.

‘Narumi Gen…I will become stronger so I can become your equal.’ Her rosy pink eyes stare intensely at the two-tone-haired man.

Training is essential for everyone, and Persephone was no exception. Aside from sleeping, eating, and drawing, training was the main focus. Spending hours training and working out, the petite girl heads out of the room. A figure walked past her like nothing but she was quick to realize it was the captain. She must make a good first impression. Persephone stood straight with a smile, “Good Evening, Gen-san!” She exclaimed in gratitude and respect.

Narumi stood still for a moment, questioning if he heard her right. ‘Gen-san? Oh right, she’s a foreigner. Okay.’ Quickly realizing the person he passed, the male simply shrugged it off, a slight head nod before walking away.

‘I did it. He listened…I think? Oh well. I need to go to my dorm room. Gen-san is very respectful, right? I’ll be sure to call him that again next time.’

“Gen-san! Good work out there, today!” A bright smile beams on her face as the division makes their way back to headquarters. The male with his slick back hair let out an audible sound of amusement. During their previous passes, it was just the two of them but now the entire division looked back at the sudden closeness and familiarity that the rookie has to the captain.

Shinonome gently tugged on the brunette’s arm before whispering in her ear.

”Castellano, Gen is his first name. Narumi is his surname. We call him Narumi-san, not Gen-san.” It was straightforward but kind which only made the Latina woman’s cheeks flare up into a deep rose color.

”EEEEeeeeehhhhhhhh?????!!!???!” Her shock gasps, staring at the platoon leader and back at the captain; practically giving herself whiplash as the officers surrounding them whisper and chuckle among themselves.

“I’m so sorry!” Persephone quickly bowed at 90 degrees, wishing that no one else could see her red and embarrassed face.

“You can apologize to me with your strength,” Narumi stated, breaking the silence as Persephone looked up with a relieved look.

”Yes sir!”

Even though Narumi Gen can be childish and lazy aside from his Kaiju slaying duties, Persephone tends to be similar whenever she’s free from training. Following the platoon leader’s informative correction of Persephone’s respectful words, the girl hasn't brought herself to call the captain, “Narumi-san.” No matter how hard she tries.

“Ugh, it’s so weird to call him like that when I’ve been calling him Gen-san the entire time!! Whhhyyy!!! You would think that by watching anime as a kid and going to a Japanese school I should know!! I should know!! Aaahhhh, it’s so cringey!! It’s a simple surname. It’s Na….Na…Nananaaa..ruuuu..Mimi….Naru…Naru…mmm…iiii…”

”Castellano. You’re still here?”

”AAAahh! I mean- y-yes! Uueeh?! N-Na-Na-Nar-Narumi—sa-sa-saaa-“

”Gen-san is fine.” He raised his hand up to reassure her. His hair was down, and his choppy layered dyed bangs covered his eyes a bit, leaving his face more obscure to the rookie.

”Gen-sama.” A spur of the moment Peresephone’s mind completely jumped to an honorific for the gods, it caught both of them off guard. Realizing her mistake, she made an sideways L shape on her right hand to tuck under her chin to play it off like a joke. This threw off Narumi where he was holding back his laughter until it spilled everywhere. A hearty laugh escapes her lips struggling to maintain a smile from the embarrassment and humor.

“HAHAAHAHAA GEN-SAMA? I KNOW I’M THE BEST BUT PFFFTT AHAHAHAAHAH!” His hands wrapped around his waist as he bent over from laughter. The girl’s face went red but let out a fit of giggles seeing this new side of the captain.

“Gen-san! Gen-san! I won’t call you that again. Or in front of them.” Her lips curl up into an amused smile, calming down as Gen looks back at her.

“Mm. Gen-san is fine if it’s from you. I‘ve seen how you train, let that be Gen-sama’s privilege to you.” His tone became playful, reassuring her that it was all good, a slight tease to the sama part.

“Oh, Gen-sama is so gracious. I will do my best.” A teasing phrase to him.

“’If it’s only me?’ What does that even mean? Is it because I’m a foreigner? Must be huh…gaijin privileges is..interesting.”

Levidromes

A levidrome is a word that when spelled backwards makes another word. Well, at least not yet. It is not in the Oxford English Dictionary. Levi Budd is a six-year-old boy from British Columbia in Canada who has coined the term 'levidrome' after spotting that the word 'STOP' spells 'POTS' backwards. After realising that there is no such word in English for this phenomena, a social media campaign has started to get this word in popular usage (hence this post). I wrote a short Python script this morning that will pull all of the levidromes from a dictionary file. The full list is copied below.

It is interesting to note that some levidromes are also palindromes. I wonder whether we need a new word to describe this phenomenon also?  Furthermore, there is no word in English for "a word that you make up in order to make another word make sense". I suggest: "emordivel" ?

Why the Fertility Goddess Reveal Bothers Me (Fastpass Spoilers)

Most people knew who it was, but personally, I was hoping this wasn't the route Rachel would go for it. Why? Because of its very poorly done inclusion.

For starters, how did the painting suddenly remove her mole? Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but it makes no sense considering the other fertility goddesses kept all their features and her pre-use painting has it. (Was the mole a part of her powers? /j)

In fact, how is it that her fertility status got "revoked" while Rhea, Metis, and Gaia's didn't?

Mind you, those three were used to the point that they no longer have a physical form. How exactly did their portraits remain the same, but Hera completely changes? It ain't adding up.

Even with Zeus' meddling, I doubt he fully redrew Hera in a 'passing the torch' pose.

There's also this scene where the harpy claims there was a fertility goddess, but she was used up before 'we knew her name'...but people did?

Zeus and Metis both knew, so how could Hera the only one "not known" if the other fertility goddesses weren't fully acknowledged either? Up until that scene and prior episodes, it's clear that almost everyone didn't think fertility goddesses were real.

Even now, it's still considered a rumor even though more gods believe it.

An easy solution would've been to make them all greyscaled until Persephone, another fertility goddess, touched that area. Rhea, Metis, and Gaia's designs are quite recognizable so the characters can still know while keeping the grey character a mystery.

It feels so forced. If you have to go and twist your story logic to have this one reveal, maybe it needs to head back in the drafts.

What are y'all thoughts? Am I tweaking, or is this something y'all dislike, too?

I'm in tears. The way Choso says the reader makes him feel wanted... That's heartbreaking considering she literally can't choose between him and another guy who's done so much to hurt her. That one chapter when he says he hopes he can be enough for her to want him and only him ... yet he still feels wanted?

Just goes to show how this man has experienced no love at all. The fact that he's even an option is enough to make him feel wanted??? God. I was so down bad for her ending up with Choso but honestly, he deserves so much better than her.

I'm so conflicted. Don't wanna break pookie's heart but fr he needs a better girl. But still god, can't have reader ending up with Gojo. I am team sugupoo at this point. She doesn't deserve Choso. Not that any of it is really her fault, but he deserves better than all this drama.

1. I get wym but while she can’t choose between two guys, note that Choso had a father who also couldn’t chose between his two women. After being raised in such a way, it doesn’t bother Choso as much as you may think it would.

What bothered Choso about having competition was how said competition spurred onto him— he takes a break from the girl he likes and when he’s back, it felt like she was trying to replace him almost

It’s slight but Choso feels like because he’s even an option in the first place, that says she wants him. Also, before she arrived at the cafe, she did tell him she was thinking about becoming his gf so yes, he feels wanted ^.^

2. Idk if we can say she’s all that bad to begin with? Aside from the way she overlooks Gojo’s red flags and instead has compassion for that man, the reader is simply a product of her environment.

The very fact that she doesn’t see Gojo as a villain even after all he’s done is simply another thing Choso would probably like about her. Think about how Yuji still smiles even through what he deals with :)

3. He does deserve a woman without the drama but said drama isn’t her fault at the end of the day so to push Choso away bc of something she couldn’t even control is actually rather sad for her especially since she’s always found peace in Choso :/
