Greek word of the day:
ποντίζομαι: (pondízome) I sink, I am submerged deep into the sea. The verb is connected to Pontos, the premordial deity which ruled the open sea before the Titan Oceanus and the Olympian Poseidon. Since antiquity, the word Pontos meant generally a sea but also the Black Sea in specific (Εύξεινος Πόντος in Greek, Éfxinos Póndos). This is why the Greeks who are indigenous of the modern-day Northern Turkish coast in the Black Sea are called Pontic Greeks. Interestingly, the Atlantic Ocean is sometimes called the Pond informally. The word pond also means a small body of water in English, so perhaps there is some very distant common root (PIE?) lost in time.
I made this post after actor Yannis Tsortekis used that verb casually in a TV interview and earned my huge respect.
