Blake Belladonna's Design
This is a quick appreciation of our Cat Girl's design. Its objective is to offer a short analysis by incorporating elements of other metas. Ideally, the end result will be something similar to Yang's post. Finally, this is the final piece of my mid-summer Blake meta spree :) So, enjoy!
JUST ANOTHER CAT GIRL?
Blake's design plays with the idea of "cat girl". Cat girls are common in anime and mangas, but are often overly sexualized. In particular, cat ears are usually presented as an overly cute trait and sometimes a fetish.
RWBY takes this idea and subverts it in 2 ways.
Blake's ears are initially hidden, so that her affinity with cats gets highlighted through other aesthetical elements:
Gambol Shroud's ribbon resembles a cat's tail and it being a whip may reference the infamous cat o' nine tails
She decorates her eyes with cat eye makeup
She is able to make copies of herself, which get jokingly referred to as copycats
In Mistral she wears leg boots, which bring to mind Puss in Boots
In Atlas she wears a catsuit
Blake's cat trait becomes a core part of her identity, which is explored on a double level:
It represents her faunus heritage, which makes her different from humans and discriminated
It is a symbol of Blake's troubled past and of her involvement with the White Fang
So, Blake covers her cat ears to run from both society and herself. Just like a scaredy cat ;)
As you see, with some limitations and worldbuilding, Blake manages to be a cat girl with much depth to her. Still, there is more to her cat design.
FROM CALICO TO TUXEDO
Let's juxtapose Blake's initial concept art with her final design:
What changes is the cat used as the main inspiration.
In the initial concept art it is the calico cat (tricolor cat):
In the final character design it is the tuxedo cat (bicolor cat):
Why the change? Let's explain it by highlighting one similarity (1) and one difference (2) between the two kitties.
1- Both cats are called after a type of cloth:
Calico is a fabric, which originates in India (the set of the Jungle Book - Blake's secondary allusion) and is famous for its colorful printed patterns. I wouldn't be surprised if Blake's clothes in the concept art were meant to be calico made.
Tuxedo is a formal wear, which consists of a black suit over a white shirt and a bow tie. Well, Blake's final design is a revisitation of the traditional tuxedo with a shorter jacket and a bow worn in the hair, instead than as a tie.
The idea of "cloth" is heavily used in Blake's design, which may be one of the reasons why the tuxedo is eventually chosen. This kitty, thus, offers a pretty poignant metaphor.
It all starts with Gambol Shroud, where shroud means a piece of cloth that conceals or protects:
Here come two thoughts:
Blake's bow is her shroud which is why it resembles her weapon’s ribbon (same color and similar material). The bow is the ears, while the ribbon is the tail. Together they complement Blake’s cat design.
Some tuxedo cats are called tuxedo masks because it is as if a black mask covers their whole faces. It is easy to see how this concept fits Blake, who conceals herself thanks to a little piece of fabric.
Basically, Blakes's bow is her tuxedo tie, which is worn as a mask.
2- The two cats differ when it comes to their color:
The calico is a tricolor cat, which is mostly known as having a white coat with some orange and black patches
The tuxedo is a bicolor cat, which has white and black fur
These two color patterns are another reason why Blake has been characterized as a tuxedo instead than a calico. As a matter of fact the black and white dychotomy fits our beautiful faunus girl more.
WHITE AND BLACK = BEAUTY AND BEAST
In old English, Blake's name means both black and white. As a result, she is linked to both colors, which tie with her light and shadow motif:
Blake is associated to the twilight because it is where light and shadow meet. What's more, her musical theme is built on this duality. She starts in the shadows and climbs her way up towards the light.
Well, Light and Shadow are linked to two Jungian Archetypes:
The Light is the persona, so what is shown to others
The Shadow is what is repressed, so the hidden parts
And these two archetypes are explored in The Beauty and The Beast:
The Beauty is the light - she is beautiful, lovable and accepted
The Beast is the shadow - he is ferocious, scary and misunderstood
So, Blake's own allusion can be read as the integration of beauty and beast, light and shadow, so that a new unit (a new individual) is born. This is also Blake's arc in a nutshell. She starts as a shadow because she hides herself, but with time she steps into the light and shows the world who she is.
In other words, Blake's Beauty and Beast allusion is referenced in her appearence not only in her nature as a faunus, but in her color scheme too. She is both beauty and beast, light and shadow, white and black.
This is also why these two colors are incorporated in respectively Sun and Ilia.
Sun is white, as he leads Blake towards the light:
Ilia is black, as she forces Blake to face her own shadows:
Through them Blake integrates her shadows and stops hiding:
This is why her design changes in Mistral in two notables ways:
She gives up her bow once and for all
She wears a white jacket over a black top
These two details mirror Blake's inner journey. She learns to show herself more, so her ears get to be out in the open and the light (white) surfaces. In Beacon, instead, the ears are concealed and Blake is wrapped in shadows (black).
Ironically, this means Blake's design loses the core traits of her tuxedo cat inspiration. As a matter of fact she has no bow tie anymore and the color pattern is inverted, which doesn't work. Why this choice? It is because Blake is going from Beast (black + cat) to Beauty (white + individual). Symbolically, this happens as she shows her faunus trait more openly:
She grows more beautiful (human) as she openly embraces her beast side (cat).
GOLD, BLUE AND PURPLE = HOT, COLD AND JUST RIGHT
The shift from calico to tuxedo brings some consequences to Blake and Yang's complementary designs.
Let's compare the bees exploratory ideas:
As people have noticed, Blake and Yang are aesthetically and symbolically linked since early on.
Here, we have:
Blake with one gold eye and one blue eye
Yang with a blue bandana
This chromatic choice ties into Yang's allusion and design. As a matter of fact our Goldilocks uses colors to represent the too hot, too cold and just right. Specifically:
red/orange is the too hot
blue/green is the too cold
purple (blue + red) is the just right
So, in the picture above Yang's looks play with the dychotomy between too hot and too cold. This same duality is mirrored in Blake:
She is both too hot (gold eye) and too cold (blue eye)
She wears much gold in general (Yang's main color)
The idea is clear. Blake is Yang's hot and cold. In particular, she brings some needed blue in Yang's life. She helps Goldilocks cool down and become more balanced. Similarly, Blake proudly wears Yang's golden tones, as she has to grow more like her Golden Beauty.
So, how have these ideas evolved in Blake’s final design?
Blake has gained a strong association with purple, which makes her Yang's just right
Blake's color scheme has ditched gold in favor of silver, which makes her and Yang complementary
Blake's link to purple is interesting because this color calls back to her family and to the surname Belladonna (beautiful woman in Italian). In other words, it is connected to both Ghira's legacy and her Beauty side. So, it is not a surprise that Blake grows more purple in each arc:
She is slowly blooming into Yang's just right by reconciling with her legacy and by becoming a person worthy of our golden girl.
This transformation is highlighted also by Blake integrating some gold into her:
In both her Vale and Atlas's designs Blake is linked to silver, so that she can complete Yang's gold. Still, in Mistral she has some gold details because this is the arc where she integrates her missing parts. This integration ends with Adam's death and Blake's rebirth:
So, Blake's design tells a story of inner growth, which leads her to stand beside Yang as an equal:
Blake: She's not protecting me, Adam. And I'm not protecting her. We're protecting each other.
This theme is important for Blake's Cat Girl archetype. Cat Girls, thus, are often reduced to love interests, but Blake's arc is a deconstruction of this idea. What would happen if the male partner of a Cat Girl is abusive? Blake explores this concept and tells a story of liberation and development, which ends with a reconstruction of the trope. Our Cat Girl ends up in a happy relationship, but not as a shallow prize. Rather as a winner.
BEASTS, LIONS AND WOLVES
In conclusion, Blake's design alludes to the Beauty and Beast on three levels:
Society= Blake is both human (beauty) and animal (beast)
Couple = Blake and Yang are drawn as complementary
Individual = Blake is both white (light) and black (shadow)
Still, this is not the only fairy tale our Cat Girl ties into thanks to her animal features. Here come three examples.
Blake is Bagheera's daughter and a small panther (a cat) in the Jungle Book
Blake is a Scaredy Cat to Lioneheart's Cowardly Lion. Except that of course the cat is braver than the lion
Blake is Ruby's black beast in team RWBY's LRRH team allusion
This last reference is foreshadowed since Red Like Roses:
Black the beast descends from shadows.
After all, the Beowolves appear when Blake's line comes up.
Moreover, Blake's secondary allusions all come together to strongly link our Black Shadow to wolves. In the Jungle Book, Mowgli is raised by wolves, just like Blake grows up in the White Fang. The name of the group itself calls back to wolves, as it references the title of Jack London's book about a half-dog half-wolf, who fights to be accepted by humans.
Finally, it turns out Blake is not the only Cat, who turns out to be a Wolf:
In short, Blake's design lets her freely move between allusions and references. Not only that, but it is crafted to add depth and thematic resonance to her character and her arc. Not bad for just another Cat Girl, uh?

Things that broke my heart, RWBY V9C5
CRWBY are coming for my heart in Volume 9.
The memory of Penny is following Ruby everywhere, but Ruby is still insistent she can handle her burdens alone. Then after she insists she is okay, we get a flash with Summer.
Ruby then giving up the broach that carries a mother's promise.
Weiss having flashbacks to the fall of Atlas. At least her team is there for her this time.
Jaune named the rabbit "Juniper." Not to mention the obvious that he is a rusted knight and has clearly been in the Ever After for some time.
And lastly, the team's excitement at meeting the rusted knight disappearing once they realized who it was.

Thinking of Pride at Beacon
Qrow strutting in a ridiculously long rainbow cape.
Oz making a speech about how love is love, this kingdom was forged in war and if we wish to live in peace we cannot do so without love and kindness.
Blake sharing stories of Faunus tales, how love has always existed in many forms.
It's Weiss's first true pride because Atlas isn't big on the whole, having your own identity and being proud.
Yang and Jaune wearing free big sis/big bro hugs shirt and hugging and comforting those who come from unsupportive families.
Nora taking names to punch homophobes and squeezing Rens hand who squeezes hers back.
Oobleck talking about how burials have been found of two women curled up in each others arms, of letters that spoke of loving a man and diaries of "spinsters."
Port doing safe sex workshops, also giving flirting tips.
Him and Qrow teaching how to tie ties, dress masc, how to apply make up, how to shave.
Glynda and Peach giving tips on how to dress femme, how to walk in heels, changing your name and pronouns on official paperwork, self defence.
Oz guiding students to safe places, both social and for healthcare.
Signing documents there parents won't.
Teachers holding students who come out, who can't go home and finding them places to go after graduation.
Who fight tooth and nail for these kids because they are their kids.
Beacon being illuminated in rainbow lights because it is a Beacon of hope.

RWBY - season 9
SO. A bit of a recap for you. Team RWBY et al - henceforth known as Team Good Guy - and Team Bad Guy fought in Atlas. James turned into a giant bag with which one douches. Stuff happened.
Then Team Good Guy uses the magic staff left by the gods to create a transit network to evacuate Atlas’ citizens. Then Cinder showed up and fought Team Good Guy and most of the them got knocked into an endless void. Except that instead of falling forever in an endless void, they instead ended up in the Ever After, a fairy tale inspired land somewhat analogous to Wonderland of Alice in Wonderland fame.
That was the end of season 8. Or volume 8 or whatever the fuck they call seasons.
Then Rooster Teeth sold out and put RWBY on Crunchyroll. Through uhhh...various means that are definitely legal stop asking questions I’m not on trial here this is a witch hunt! I have managed to procure viewership of the new season. Or volume. Or whatever the fuck.
So anyway, Ruby wakes up in the Ever After and meets a talk mouse named Little. Then I don’t really remember what happened next but Team RWBY is reunited and meet a talking cat called the Curious Cat who offers to guide them.
Also Neo is also in the Ever After, still after Ruby even though she has literally no good reason to be after Ruby.
Anyway, then middle middle middle, they go to the Red Palace and meet the Red Prince and play a board game with him where the rules make quite literally no sense, which is just as well because it’s just an excuse for an action scene.
Anyway, then middle middle middle and Jaune(!) shows up but he’s an old man now. Probably in his 50s or some shit. Why did Jaune get thrown into the past but all of Team RWBY were sent to the same time period?
Anyway, then Team RWBY and Jaune set out to Jaune’s village while Jaune exposits some and then they get caught in a “punderstorm”, a literal representation of their dilemma, viz a viz whether to trust Jaune or their new friend the Curious Cat.
Well, everyone except Blake and Yang, who are caught in their own punderstorm scenario representing their relationship. Any, middle middle middle, and Blake and Yang confess their love for eachother.
ZOMG! RWBY’S GONE WOKE! THESE ARE THE END TIMES! THE GAY AGENDA! WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!1!!!1!!!1!!!!!
Ha. Just kidding. Insofar as I care for any romantic entanglements at all, I have no great objection to... Bumblebee wasn’t it? Shipping. The horror.
Just so long as we keep Sun far far FAR away, because the last thing we need is a damn love triangle. At least Adam had the good graces to die after he made a point of considering Yang a romantic rival, but he had an out; villains die easier than heroes and Adam’s story had pretty much run its course anyway.
Unless Sun has a climactic duel with like, Tyrian or Cinder (although probably not Cinder because she was the one who had a climactic duel with Pyrrha and that would just be a rehash) I don’t foresee him ever dying.
So anyway, Bumblebee. I’m sure someone is happy, so I’m happy for them.
Then Team RWBY and Jaune go to a village where a bunch of paper starfish are trying to kill themselves so that they can go back to the Great Tree, which is something that the denizens of Ever After do naturally apparently, but Jaune’s gone crazy and won’t let them.
Then a bunch of monsters created by Neo show up and there’s an action scene and then Ruby has PTSD and then the fight’s over and a dam breaks and floods the village and kills all the paper starfishes (but that’s a good thing, so yay?). Then Ruby has a freakout.
Then Jaune freaks out too. Then Ruby bails and end of episode. And now we’re all caught up.
Interesting stuff. I truly hope Neo dies before this season is over, because she stopped being relevant back in like, season 3. When Roman died. Now she’s just stealing screen time from more relevant villains. I mean, maybe not Cinder, because Cinder is overexposed and kinda annoying. On the other hand, she’s overdue for her own climactic death in a mano e mano with Ruby. And there’s still Tyrian. Maybe Jaun goes down in a heroic sacrifice, taking Tyrian with him. I don’t know, just throwing out ideas.

Bumbleby VS Robyn
Blake and Yang's most important moment in volume 7 is their disagreement over Ironwood and Ruby, which is solved with their fight against Robyn and their choice to share the truth with her.
This is overall a minor moment, but it touches on several important themes and ideas, which are central to Blake and Yang's arcs.
ROBYN AS BUMBLEBY'S FOIL
Robyn herself is an interesting foil to both bees.
Just like Blake, she is a freedom fighter and she isn't afraid to break the law for her ideals:
Robyn: The law isn't perfect, you know. It's certainly not equal. My only goal is that all the citizens of Mantle and Atlas -- and Faunus -- have an equal shot at a good life.
Blake: There's too much wrong in this world to just stand by and do nothing. Inequality, corruption… Someone has to stop it.
Her political history even resembles Blake's. She is the leader of a movement, who hopes to change society peacefully. Still, when this chance is stolen, she resorts to strength.
Just like Yang, she is a person who gives much importance to honesty and trust:
Robyn: We can't fix the wall without the supplies on these trucks. I think Mantle deserves to know what they're being used for. It doesn't have to be difficult. Just tell me.
Yang: If we're going to help, if we're going to keep risking our lives, no more lies. No more half-truths.
She even resembles our Goldilock in personality. She is as quick to give names as Yang is to make puns. Morevoer, both are strong-willed and sometimes hot-headed. (Also, both are blond and with purple eyes)
So, Blake and Yang are really asked to face off against a part of themselves. Not only that, but they are forced to play parts they deep down dislike.
Blake is forced to arrest a Huntress, who is trying to help the poor and the oppressed:
Blake: I can tell you, ambushing a Huntress who's just trying to help isn't an option I'm thrilled about choosing.
Our Shadow Beast has spent the majority of her life fighting Atlas, but she is now allied with Ironwood who embodies the Kingdom and its classism.
Yang is forced to hide information from others. Both from Ironwood because of Ruby and from Robyn because of Ironwood:
Yang: Do you… Do you think we should've told Ironwood about Salem, before he put so much on the line for Amity? I trust Ruby, but I think he deserves to know what he's stepping into. We all did.
She was the angriest at Ozpin for keeping secrets, but she is now withholding information herself.
In short, Blake and Yang are in a new situation. Blake is with those in power. Yang is in the known. And yet things aren't easier:
Blake: I'm not sure there are many good options left for any of us anymore. Keeping secrets, taking lives? It makes you wonder how far we're gonna have to go to keep doing the right thing.
Now that they are stronger and wiser, the bees realize they might be becoming like those they resented. So, they decide to forge a new path:
Blake: It isn't an option I'm thrilled about choosing. Yang: Then, maybe we shouldn't.
They take a risk and share the truth with Robyn. What's the outcome?
SHADOW AND LIGHT
Out of the ashes a new flame ignite Rise up from shadows and into the light
Bumbleby vs Robyn is a fight, which makes full use of shadows and lights. This kind of symbolism is dear to Blake:
After all, she is linked to the twilight, when lights and shadows meet, because she is meant to become a bridge between different cultures and people. Here, she fulfills this role.
Throughout their battle, Bumbleby stay in the light. Robyn instead steps into the shadows:
This happens because our 2 girls can move in the light of Atlas society and know the truth. Meanwhile Robyn can only survive by escaping and hiding and is in the dark.
So, Blake tries to overcome the gap:
Blake: Amity Colosseum, all these supplies, they're for… They're for a new communications tower.
She leads Robyn towards the light:
This is Blake's call. She is supposed to bring people lost in darkness into the light. This is why symbolically she can see in darkness (like a cat). It is so she can notice people who are unseen and unheard and make them visible and heard. Here, she stays true to herself.
PLAY BOTH SIDES
Play both sides (play both sides) When truth you cannot recognize
Bumbleby vs Robyn is rooted in the themes of trust, lies and truth. All these ideas are central to Yang's character:
Raven: The truth is that "truth" is hard to come by. A story of victory for one person is a story of defeat for someone else. By now, your uncle has surely told Ruby and her friends plenty of stories.
This is Raven's teaching, after all. In order to understand the complexity of the world Yang should doubt others and ask questions:
Yang: Why should we believe any of this? Raven: Now you're catching on. So far you've done nothing but accept what others tell you, but you need to question everything.
This is the only way for her to see what is usually hidden:
Scathing eyes ask that we be symmetrical, one sided and easily processed. Yet every misshapen spark's unseen beauty is greater than its would be judgement.
So, this is what Yang does throughout the whole scene. She expresses doubts about Ruby's decision and comes up with her own strategy to deal with the current situation. Blake may be the heart of the operation, as she is the most determined to get through and is the one to step forward. Still, Yang is the mind, as she is the one to bring up the idea in the first place. Let's highlight this idea is in itself an ambiguous solution.
On the one hand Yang and Blake are telling Robyn the truth and trusting her. On the other hand they are adding new secrets and lies between them and Ironwood's group:
Ironwood: Are you with me? How did Robyn know about the Global Communications Project?
In short, Yang finds a solution to pursue trust and honesty, but she does so by accepting the necessity of a gray zone. Maybe this is why she is the one who looks straight into the shadows, after Blake leaves first:
And what she sees is disturbingly familiar:
Robyn: I won't stop until I know the whole truth.
Yang: That question… Why? I didn't know an answer, but I was determined to find out. It was all I thought about.
ADAM AND RAVEN'S GHOSTS
So, the bees come up together with a solution to their current predicament.
Blake is passionate about this idea and pursues it with faith. She leads Robyn into the light with no hesitation.
Yang comes up with the plan, but is wary of the situation. She looks at Robyn's shadows and has doubts.
These opposite approaches are complementary and clearly stem from Blake and Yang's different developments, which the scene references through the subtle presence of both Adam and Raven.
Adam is directly alluded to:
Yang: Blake. We did… what we had to do. Blake: I know. But next time, I wanna make sure we don't have to.
Blake regrets killing Adam. She knows she had no other choice, but is still not happy about it and does not want to go through something similar again. Even if she is now stronger and free, she still has some emotions to unpack. This is why Adam comes up here and in another moment of volume 7:
Blake: I just realized where we are. This mine was closed after an explosion. Weiss: I remember this disaster. Or rather, I remember how furious it made my father. I wish I could take back the years of pain my family has caused the Faunus and all of my complacency in it.
In the mine Blake remembers both Adam's SDC scar and Ilia's parents. They are two memories linked to Faunus discrimination, which is a problem she is still grappling with. Our Cat Girl is then still mulling over some unsolved feelings over:
Adam's death
The Faunus discrimination
It is then no surprising this comes up in 2 scenes linked to specifically Yang and Weiss, so the 2 characters set up to help with these 2 sides of Blake's story.
Raven isn't mentioned, but her presence is there, as Yang clearly follows her mother's advice. She is asking questions and thinking for herself. She even comes up with a plan where she and Blake go behind their allies' back for what they believe in.
Yang: You're right. I don't know you. I only know the Raven dad told me about. She was troubled, and complicated, but she fought for what she believed in, whether it was her team or her tribe!
In other words, Yang here takes after Raven. She plays the part of the Wise Woman who shares a part of her knowledge, but not all of it because it is dangerous:
Yang: Look, we are trusting you, so trust us when we say that Amity Tower needs to stay a secret until it's done. We just need a little more time.
Yang is clearly conflicted about this. As she is in general conflicted about Raven herself. This is shown also in another moment of volume 6:
Maria: Child, a Huntress is supposed to protect others to the bitter end. But after I lost my eyes, I only ever looked after myself. Even after my surgery, I was too afraid to fight. Afraid someone would find me again, finish what the others started. You shouldn't aspire to be like me, especially when some of you are clearly stronger already. Upon hearing this, Yang looks down sadly.
Once again it is the context and Yang's body language which drive the message home. Maria frames herself as an authority figure who fails the younger generation. She says she ran away and that the kids are clearly already stronger than her. This is bound to bring a very specific conversation to Yang's mind:
Yang: Oh, shut up!! You don't know the first thing about strength! You turn your back on people, you run away when things get too hard, you put others in harm's way instead of yourself!! You might be powerful, but that doesn't make you strong.
In short, Yang still can't fully process Raven. She can't reconcile the Wise Woman with the Terrible Mother. This is what these 2 brief moments suggest. And once again they seem lousely linked to 2 different teammates:
Blake > the girl Yang loves and with whom she wants to share a future with
Ruby > Yang's little sister she is determined to protect like their mother couldn't
Future and Past - 2 things Yang still has to fully deal with.
As you can see, these short scene is really full of motifs, themes and foreshadowing. Blake and Yang's arcs have been on break throughout Atlas, but the 2 girls still received moments which flesh them out and build their future storyarcs.

They’re everything. She’s just Yang.
Art by A. G. Nonsuch
One of my favorite things about Rwby
Is this dynamic
Ruby Weiss and Blake all have world altering importance
And yangs just like a very determined older sister
Yang just wants her family all safe and happy and would happily die to ensure this
Yangs just like “this is my found family” and it’s like the most important people in the world
Not that this is at all new she’s just like surrounded by them her uncle is one of the best huntsmen alive despite being falling over drunk all the time considering he does all of ozpins missions personally and always by himself Ravens so good of a criminal she was on salems radar plus she’s MAGIC and can turn into a damn bird AND so yangs gif that in her I guess + the whole maiden thing summers super important somehow connected to salem as well ironwood who was the general for a WHILE was so close to qrow he might be her or rubys god father ozpin liked strq so much he gave two members magic so he might be a godfather too cause he seems to be really close to the family too
She’s like a magnet
And Yangs still just kinda there and she doesn’t consider any of these people like high and mighty or anything for being so important
She talks to ironwood super casually for the highest ranking military commander ever when he visits her after she becomes a criminal in v3 Qrows just her uncle when she speaks to Raven she’s totally ok with the idea of beating up her entire clan of criminals to get what she wants and then doesn’t respect a THING she says even after the reveal that MAGIC IS REAL and then when they Talk again after Raven joins salem, the bad guy and reveals she’s the MAIDEN which is super powerful yang insults her over and over with only one of her arms like she’s in no danger and then when she confronted ozpin/ Oscar about what Raven told her she gives him no special treatment for being a magical wizard that her entire family (minus Raven) trusts to make any decisions
Yang makes no exceptions no one is special yang would look the gods in the eyes and go “fuck off” and see nothing wrong with that

The way I need Qrow walking, no running to hug Yang and Ruby.
Hugging them with all that he has.
Because he almost lost two of the last shreds of family he had.
And them hugging him back.
Their taller but he's still able to tuck them away in his arms just like he always had.
No words just looking at them, as if looking away would make them vanish.
With a small tearful smile on his lips.
Kissing both of their foreheads and just feeling a part of his soul return.
Him looking up like "bring it in kid" to Weiss and she feels like when they all reunited so long ago.
She's in their arms before anyone can say another word.
And he's laughing, and tears are falling down his cheeks and he looks at Blake with a mischievous but genuine smile.
"In this family we do a lot of group hugs."
Blake blinking in suprise and smiling back, sniffling and nodding and joining into the hug.
Her hand findings Yangs and Qrow just softens.
Nora finds a place in their embrace, with Ren and Qrow nods at Jaune and Emerald like "well?"
And than they slotting in their too.
And Qrow, Qrow looks years younger, before the pain, before the alcohol.
Holding these kids, his kids.
Even if they aren't kids anymore their his.
And than their slowly backing away still in reach and he sees him.
Oscar, because it's a Oscar because he knows it's Oscar and he hadn't left but he might as well have.
Oscar who's watching them all worth a soft smile, before Qrow pulls him in and hugs him.
But he's not just hugging him and they all know it.
"Found him" says Qrow almost a whisper, eyes only on Oscar. "Found him" he says softly, a new trail of tears.
Oscar feels a laugh bubble up, a reminder of their first meeting.
"Found him", says Oscar, only it's not Oscar now.
Qrow rests his head on his.
"Found him."
