Eurovision 2004 - Number 37 - Yanah - "Yes Or No"

Another year, another nascent pop career at the Belgian Eurosong. This is Yanah, aka Natalie Vangronsvelt, and Yes or No is the lead single from her debut album The Girl in the Picture (out in 2004 in all good Belgian record stores). The album cover shows Yanah holding something bouzouki-like. The rest of the album is full of songs with Indian and Cuban influences with the title of the album coming from the famous picture of the young Phan Thi Kim Phuc, screaming, napalm burned and naked, running from the Vietnam War.

Somehow all of that leads to Yes or No, which is a conventional Western pop-rock song with Yanah wanting some commitment from her wavering partner. There some red, alt-punk grungy guitars, an American accent, and a red-leather jacket. Yanah is trying to be Avril Lavigne. It's fun, spiky and a little bit breathless. Her record company clearly saw this is a promotional opportunity for the album - even if this song doesn't really fit with the rest of the songs on it.

The voting reflected how this was received nicely. The jury didn't like, putting it second last in the heat. For once, the televote agreed with them. However the radio juries liked it a lot, putting in a tie for second-place. Radio-friendliness is all over the sound of this. The song was written by Yanah alongside Eric Geurts who is a song-writer and producer. Eric had his name everywhere on Yanah's debut album. He'd tried to launch girl-pop duo Indiana five years previously without success and in Yanah he's found a new front-girl for his musical ambitions.

Unfortunately for both him and for Yanah, the public didn't take to her or the album. This is a one-off appearance for her at Eurosong and after 2004, there was no more recorded musical output either from her or with Eric's name on it. Maybe the incongruity of the pop tracks and the more ethnic-oriented songs put off potential fans. After 2004 there's little not no trace of Yanah/Natalie. Eric Geurts still runs Flying Snowman Records and studio focussing mainly on production. There is no mention of Yanah on any of his websites or social media.

Party Saturday

Holaaa!! Yesterday was the start of the last weekend of the internship, Kaat and I first went to a nail salon and then I went cycling through Valencia with Yanah and we kayaked to the science museum. In the evening, I went out with the girls from MO and the boys from 7BSP. It was a really successful day, now just crawl into my bed and get some sleep…see you tomorrow!!!

Quiet time

I am actually sleepy now - but I feel that i need this quiet time and moment for myself uninterrupted.

Today started a bit in a heavier side of heart because Adi and I quarrelled about some issue. Luckily at least we settled it today and said our apologies.

Work wise, it’s actually quite busy. I don’t usually do other things apart from extracting images on Monday but today I did fair bit.

In the afternoon, work got bit interrupted because yanah came back home with me after I did the mystery reader thing. So I continued working after she slept.

I also got my apple watch today! Alhamdulillah. My life really has improved now. It is really good that I am earning at least our family is relaxed financially.

Yes it could still be better because afterall time is money, but it’s overall improving. Looking back, I’ve really come far from that girl in Taguig who’s so lost on her career today.

Healthy Competition for Success: A Competitive but Down-to Earth Student

Do you set standards in everything that you do? Are you the kind of person who doesn’t settle for less? Are you doing your best in everything that you do? These are the questions that I tend to ask myself all the time. There are times I assess myself whenever I accomplish something because sometimes, I always think that whenever I achieve something, I don’t deserve it. However, I have people that make me feel that I always do well in everything. Many people told me I am so passionate and dedicated in everything that I do. I do appreciate those people. I am the kind of person who never settle for less when it comes to academic life, but I always fail in love life.

As far as I can remember, I became competitive when I met a friend of mine when I was in high school, way back in Grade 7. I’m grateful I had the chance to meet him because he’s such an inspiration. He’s intelligent and talented. Maybe you think that he’s my crush, but you’re wrong. He’s only my friend and at that time there was a thought that I wanted to be like him too. That was the start of my journey of being a competent student. In my journey of always setting high standards in everything I do; I never think I am better than anybody else. I don’t compare myself to other people because we have different capabilities. I can’t do the things that anyone can do, and I can do things that anyone can’t do.

I think being a competent student has some pros and cons. Since I am a competitive student, it helps me to enhance my organizational and time management skills. It also helps me to be goal-oriented because when I set my mind to something, I will go for it. Being a competent student allows me to lead an organization. Whenever we plan activities, I always consider their suggestions if their ideas are better than mine. Being down-to-earth is crucial in leadership because it will help you build a connection with your teammates.

On the other side of the coin, being a competitive student is not that easy because I always pressure myself. After all, some people have high expectations of me. Also, it is not easy to be grade conscious, it is stressful, and you must always set high standards for yourself. As I continue this phase of being a college student, competing is valid, yes, that’s normal, but I’m doing it in a better way. I always practice humility because that’s the most powerful virtue that a person can have. It is not easy to humble ourselves every time, but we should always keep in our mind that we shouldn’t trample people because healthy competition will lead us to success.
