ROUND 6: ITALY (MUGELLO)
There’s nowhere like italy, and no race like the Italian GP. With it’s inimitable atmosphere, passionate (sometimes too much) fans and one of the most enjoyable and fascinating track of the calendar, the Italian GP is on everybody’s bucket list.
1. Lorenzo il magnifico
After weeks of speculation regarding his future ans possible retirement, it’s a determined and confident Jorge Lorenzo who arrived at the track on thursday.
Insisting that he has absolutely no intention of retiring, the mallorcan made his point clear in QP where he lost the pole position to Valentino Rossi in the very last minutes.
Second on the grid, sure of himself and in what he believed he could achieved, Lorenzo fired his desmosedici from the starting grid onto the main straight like a bullet out of a gun. He took the lead in the first corner to never gave it back until the finish line.
It’s a classic and masterclass win that Lorenzo delieved on Sunday. He, the man so many love to hate and never believed in, won on a Ducati, in italy in front of all of Ducati’s bosses and ducatisti. Lorenzo’s clear joy, emotions and enthusiasm were not only a blessing to witness but also a proof how just how hard the last year and a half has been for him.
In « caliente » the spaniard stated winning on the Ducati was the best day of his life. The pride and joy of annexing the « Red Stands » with his famous Lorenzo Land flag was obvious but sadden by the fact this story will not continue in the coming years.
2. A win and.. what’s next ?
Behind closed doors, Lorenzo who felt like Ducati were not interested a bit about his case nor had any love left for him, has been maneuvering with his management team, Dorna and Lin Jarvis to prepare a team in which he could get his hands a Yamaha M1, much like his arch nemesis Valentino Rossi did after his red debacle.
Ducati, who is said to have signed Danilo Petrucci just hours before Lorenzo’s win, found themselves in a very curious position indeed.
There’s no denying Dovizioso’s progress through the years, but one can only wonder if he’ll ever really be title’s material. A combo Dovi/Petrucci will sure win races, but it misses that little sparkles, that little something that transform a chance of title into a proper title.
It’s that sparkle they wanted when they signed Lorenzo and that’s that little extra something he could give them if only they were giving him time. At the end of the day, that’s the main problem: after only a year on the bike they asked Jorge Lorenzo to do what their new favorite needed 5 years to do. Can Ducati found a way to convince Lorenzo to stay ? Do Dovizioso and Petrucci have a real chance to get a world championship against Marc Marquez ? Is it too late to keep Lorenzo ? Judging by the mallorcan’s own words after the race, it is: “One side of my heart is sad. I am very happy with this victory but one side of me is sad because I believe if I had this modification before I could tell you that I would stay with Ducati but the pieces arrived too late and the next two years I will be with another bike.”
Ducati’s faillure to keep the spaniard could well end up into a gift offered to Yamaha: a team which desperately need some Lorenzo’s magic again judging by their current form.
3. Some smiles, some don’t
It was a mix of content and frustrated faces you could found at Yamaha on sunday evening.
First, Valentino Rossi, the man all of italy consider as the personification of Jesus on Earth, not only took the pole position on Saturday (his 65th) but he also made it to the podium in 3rd place after one hell of a fight with Petrucci, Rins and Iannone.
The italian, genuinely happy for his old teammate’s win, was on cloud 9 to be back on the podium at the Mugello: « all the training and suffering is worth it for these 10 minutes on the podium ». Awww Our Hearts, Vale !
Less vocal but critical nonetheless, Rossi believed they still could play a part in this year’s championship and urges Yamaha to solves their recurent problems which are the reason behind their lack of win since Assen 2017.
On the other side of the box, Maverick Vinales was way more angry, vocal and frustrated than his famous teammate.
He stated after the race: « Yamaha promised me that i’d win, not fight with satelite Ducatis (...) they have a rider to fight for the championship, but they need to give me the tools for that». OUCH !
Since his last win at the 2017’s french GP, Vinales has been doing the « yo-yo » to the point where, in the very same weekend he can go from being nowhere in to be seen in FPs to 3rd on the grid to barely taking a top 10 in the race.
One can only wonder WHY did both sides of this equation agreed to continue together as early as they did before the season started. (A question we ask ourselves non stop since the annoucement).
4. Marquez couldn’t save it while Pedrosa needs saving
Marc Marquez, King of saves and gravel trap’s favorite Gardener, crashed out of the Italian GP, rejoining the race to finish only outside the top 15, getting absolutely no points, except maybe ours for his determination to try always and forever, but then again, these do not count at the end of the year.
On hard tires, the spaniard made a gamble which would lead him to fall visibly forcing too much on his front to match Lorenzo’s early race pace. While losing 25 or less points might make him frustrated and unhappy of his weekend, it’s the fans’ reaction which infuriated him on sunday evening: “To celebrate the crash of a rider is sad because we are taking risks on the track. I don't know if many people ‘celebrated’ my crash today but, well, it is curious that they celebrate a crash of a rider more than a victory of another. It is a curious thing about bike racing.”
Used to boos and cheers when he goes down since 2015 and his famous clash with Rossi, Marc insisted he hoped his fans will never act like that, in any circumstances: “I said before in 2015 and in 2016 that I hope they support the racing as much as me and respect all the riders. This is the most important.”
Marc couldn’t save his crash but it’s Pedrosa’s situation which becomes worrying for next season. The spaniard has been very quiet about his future. Only a few rumors of a 1 year deal he would have refused coming from Honda have escaped from the paddock (then again, is it even true ?). At the end of the day, it might not be Captain Lorenzo who needs saving from Carmelo Ezpeleta but Soldier Pedrosa.
Rumor has it, Honda, after trying to get Dovi, Mir and Zarco without success, tried to buy Jack Miller back home from his current multiple years Ducati deal. It might be very different from the inside, but looking at it from the outside, we cannot help but think Alberto Puig and the HRC are keen and giving the ride alongside Marc Marquez to ANYONE BUT Dani Pedrosa.
As seats for next season are almost all taken now, it’s becoming a reality that Pedrosa, if nothing happens that could save his current place, could very well be heading home in 2019. This end of Dani’s MotoGP chapter would be unacceptable, not only to his many fans, but to the rest of the MotoGP paddock. A rider should never be forced to retirement, especially not one with Pedrosa’s palmares.
Now i do not know where we have to sign or whom we have to threaten but, if he is without a ride, just give him the M1 on that satelite/petrona team they are building, alongside Lorenzo or not.
5. Honorable mentions
Andrea Iannone was on fire the whole weekend showing a form that could have made a title contender has he only be consisten the rest of the time. He’ll leave Suzuki at the end of the year, surely to get an Aprilia next season.
Zarco was nowhere to be seen this weekend after his missed opportunity in France.
Alex Rins was back where he belongs, fighting for top positions.
Danilo Petrucci couldn’t stop whining about Marquez’ pass on him in the early race and we couldn’t care less because, well, he should remember he does the same pretty much all the time.
Cal Crutchlow was a tuff one this weekend, still suffering from his huge crash last time out.

It’s closer than ever as the flag falls at the end of the Americas GP, with Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) taking the win and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) taking the Championship lead as Texas shook up the standings. There are now five riders within eight points at the top of the title fight – with Marquez a point off the top after his win, and Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) moving up to third after a second place finish at COTA.
The Americas GP also made it back-to-back podium finishes for Suzuki, with Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) putting in an impressive push from the front row to take third and his first rostrum finish of the season – and first rostrum with the Hamamatsu factory.
It was also Iannone who got the holeshot from second on the grid, but Marquez also got a stunner from Row 2 – slotting into second and on the chase behind the ‘Maniac’. Making his move soon after and taking the lead, the number 93 started to pull a gap – but Iannone wasn’t done, and gave it everything for a late dive up the inside of the reigning Champion. Running a bit wide on the exit, Marquez took him back – and then put his head down.

From there on out, the spectacular ballet of man and machine once more ruled the rodeo in Texas – with the victory making it ten consecutive premier class wins for Marquez on US soil.
Behind, however, it was getting pretty tight as Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) pressured teammate Viñales for third and Iannone held firm in second. But lap-by-lap, Viñales was able to ease away and stake his claim on P2 – closing in on Iannone before a well-judged pass into Turn 1 saw the Spaniard able to get through and then pull away. Keeping it calm, he took his first podium of the season in second, and Iannone did the same in third.
Rossi came home fourth, with Dovizioso taking fifth after a particularly difficult weekend. Well-rewarded for a solid race, the 2017 Runner Up is now the leader of the pack once again after his controlled performance, including a late race pass on Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3).
Zarco was top Independent Team rider in P6, with former Championship leader Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) sliding out at the final corner when attacking the Frenchman earlier in the race. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) also then suffered a tumble soon after – riders ok and Crutchlow able to rejoin.
Meanwhile, Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) followed up two stunning showings on Friday and Saturday to come home in a superhuman P7. Back on track and racing just over a week after surgery on his broken wrist sustained in the Argentina GP, the ‘Little Samurai’ rode a heroic push through the pain barrier around the punishing, technical challenge of the Circuit of the Americas in a performance worthy of the history books, taking home nine points ahead of the Championship’s return to one of his best venues: Jerez.
There was a Borgo Panigale battle around three seconds behind three-time World Champion Pedrosa, with Tito Rabat (Reale Avintia Racing) impressively beating Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing) to the line for eighth. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) completed the top ten, putting in an impressive push to keep Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) behind him after a tough race for the five-time World Champion.
Danilo Petrucci (Alma Pramac Racing) took P12, ahead of some impressive points for Pol Espargaro and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in P13. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) was top rookie in P14, ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Angel Nieto Team).
So there we have it! The rodeo is ridden and the points are given, and what a Championship we have on our hands as we head for Jerez: five riders within eight points, with ‘DesmoDovi’ the man in the lead on the road to Europe. Marquez trails him by one point, Viñales by five and Crutchlow by eight – with Zarco equal on points with the Brit, back in P5 due to Crutchlow having a race win.
Now it’s carnival time. Packed grandstands, Spanish sun, the awesome Circuito de Jerez and one of the best atmospheres of the year – with the Championship so close, there’s almost nothing in it. Tune in on Friday 4th May, with lights out for Round 4 at 14:00 local time (GMT +2) on Sunday 6th.

MotoGP Jerez 2017 Results
Repsol Honda #2 Dani Pedrosa, looking like the 2012 version of himself, won today’s Spanish Grand Prix, leading wire to wire for his first win since Misano last year. Teammate and defending champion Marc Marquez gave chase for most of the race, but never seemed to have quite enough to mount a serious challenge to Pedrosa on one of those days… Underdog Jorge Lorenzo claimed third step on the podium in a credible performance on the factory Ducati, his first podium in red which, he said afterwards, felt like a win. When the smoke cleared, the 2017 race had tightened considerably, to the delight of the majority of fans, especially those expensively dressed. Embed from Getty Images We’ve seen these three Spaniards on top of podiums together may times before, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to that Dani Pedrosa, Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo have not shared a podium together since the final race of the 2015 season.
Practice
Practice sessions at Jerez varied from wet to damp to dry, and the timesheets were informative: FP1: Wet. Repsol Honda veteran Dani Pedrosa, Brit Cal Crutchlow, and Australia’s Jack Miller. All Hondas. FP2: Damp/drying. Pedrosa, Miller and Crutchlow. Hmmm. FP3: Dry. Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Maverick Vinales. Hmmm again. Clearly Pedrosa has it going on this weekend. Race day to be dry. Seems to be pretty Honda-friendly. Who goes through to QP2: Four Hondas and four Yamahas (Vinales 4th, Valentino Rossi 7th late), Andrea Iannone on the Suzuki, and Lorenzo the top Ducati in 8th. Jerez is not a Ducati-friendly track, to say the least. Q1: Iannone and Aleix Espargaro’s Aprilia advance; Petrucci and Dovizioso do not, but then comes the factory KTM team of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro, putting both on the fifth row for what I guess to be the first time. I’m starting to develop a little motowood about this KTM bunch. Embed from Getty Images KTM continues to make progress, even if the race results aren’t there yet. Pol Espargaro was fifth in Q1, just ahead of teammate Bradley Smith. Q2: The Usual Suspects, joined once again by Dani Pedrosa, dominate. Pedrosa, teammate Marquez and Crutchlow oust newest wunderkind Vinales from the front row. Three Hondas and two compatriotas on Row 1! Southern Spain is dancing in the streets. It’s a big deal over there. As dusk falls on Saturday, it looks like one of the Hondas is going to stand on the top step. Yet, Rossi shows up on Sundays, as does Vinales. Crutchlow and Lorenzo are lurking. Worth a ticket if you’re in the neighborhood on Sunday.
Undercard: Moto2 Procession
Embed from Getty Images Alex Marquez won his first career Moto2 race, putting an end to Franco Morbidelli’s winning streak. Moto2 Estrella Galicia heartthrob and series leader Franco Morbidelli crashed out of the lead unassisted, allowing young Alex Marquez to break his Moto2 cherry, winning easily for the first time since his Moto3 championship in 2014. Afterwards, he was congratulated by big brother Marc in Parc Ferme, in a moment none of us ever forget, of which older brother must have surely reminded him.
The Race Itself
Embed from Getty Images Johann Zarco continues to impress, starting strong in Jerez before finishing just off the podium in fourth. In the early action, Pedrosa took the hole shot from pole followed closely by Marquez. Johann Zarco, the precocious rookie on the Tech 3 Yamaha, proceeded to trade paint with Rossi on Lap 1 before going through on him. We watched Lap 2 in some amazement as he then proceeded to reel in Vinales, Crutchlow and Iannone, taking over third place behind the Repsol Hondas. Say what you will about the French, this Zarco has onions. Especially with a full tank. By Lap 4 Lorenzo was running seventh and Rossi eighth, giving the crowd a brief flashback to 2009 and 2010 when the two of them used to duel regularly for Yamaha. Lap 5 saw the impudent Zarco go through on Marquez into second place and Miller get taken down by the spatially unaware Alvaro Bautista, leading to the swing/slap thing from Miller. On Lap 6 Crutchlow fell out of fourth place and Pol Espargaro grounded his KTM machine, while Lap 7 gave us more Lorenzo vs. Rossi. During all of this, the Repsol Hondas were beginning to disappear, after Marquez had taken second back from Zarco. Embed from Getty Images Jack Miller was understandably displeased after being taking out by Alvaro Bautista. Miller later gave Bautista a shove for which he received a 1000 euro fine. On Lap 10, team Marc VDS Racing’s day was completely ruined when Tito Rabat crashed out, joining Bautista in the Zero Points Club. Moments later, Iannone slid his Suzuki into the gravel. Lorenzo was suddenly dogging Zarco for third place, and Dovizioso went through on Rossi, who was definitely having tire issues. There was some jousting further down the order that you’ll need to watch on video to understand fully. Rookie Jonas Folger, on the second Tech 3 Yamaha, had the temerity to go through on legend Rossi on Lap 22 while Rossi’s tires continued to disintegrate beneath him. Lorenzo finally broke Zarco around Lap 23 for his first Ducati podium. Plenty of exhaling taking place at Ducati Corse over that one. Embed from Getty Images Former teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi battled it out with Lorenzo coming out ahead. Coincidentally, it took both riders four races after switching from Yamaha to Ducati to score their first podiums on a Desmosedici. Dani Pedrosa, climbing back into Tranche 1, and Jorge Lorenzo, advancing to Tranche 3, still have some go in their tanks. That Lorenzo could do well at Jerez on the Ducati says much about him and the GP17, that they appear to be nearing a rapprochement that will allow Lorenzo, as well as Dovizioso, to compete for the podium most every time out. Danilo Petrucci, with a solid seventh place finish on the Pramac Ducati GP17, moves up to T2. Here’s the rest, including a look-back at the previous rankings: Bruce’s Rankings After Round 3 Tranche 1: Vinales, Marquez, Rossi Tranche 2: Pedrosa, Crutchlow, Dovizioso, Zarco, Miller Tranche 3: Bautista, Iannone, Petrucci, Baz, Redding, Folger Tranche 4: A. Espargaro, P Espargaro, Barbera, Lorenzo , (Rins) Tranche 5: Smith, Lowes, Rabat, Abraham New Rankings after Round 4 Tranche 1: Vinales, Marquez, Rossi, Pedrosa ↑ Tranche 2: Crutchlow, Dovizioso, Zarco, Petrucci ↑ Tranche 3: Lorenzo ↑, Folger, A Espargaro ↑, Miller ↓, Iannone, Redding Tranche 4: Bautista ↓, P Espargaro, Barbera, Baz Tranche 5: Smith, Lowes, Rabat, Abraham, (Rins) Social climbers: Pedrosa, Petrucci, Lorenzo, and Aleix Espargaro. Lorenzo’s podium very impressive; he looked in command of the GP17. Aleix Espargaro has the Aprilia competitive. Embed from Getty Images A much-needed third-place result takes some of the pressure off of Jorge Lorenzo. The podium puts Lorenzo into the top 10 in the championship standings for the first time this season. Pedrosa now owns a new record for consecutive seasons with at least one grand prix win at 16. He won it during the 3000th Grand Prix race of the modern era. Worthy of respect, more titanium in him than most golf clubs and forearms like cables: Little Big Man is what I used to call him, and I still like it. Embed from Getty Images The last time Dani Pedrosa went a whole season without a win was 2001, his rookie season in the 125cc class. Losing Face: Miller and Bautista. Miller, in part, for such a prissy swing he took at Bautista. I don’t care that it was Bautista’s fault. But either swing like you mean it or don’t swing. Crutchlow is flirting with T3. Rossi is flirting with T2 and hasn’t won since Mugello last year. Tire issues today not his fault, but rider’s choice nonetheless.
So Moto2 and MotoGP are Modeling One Another…
…as the following comparison clearly shows. Focus groups have informed Dorna that fans prefer it if an old crafty veteran challenges a young buck for the top spot. They don’t want either rider to get away. And the more riders challenging for the title the better. Four and five would be optimal. Embed from Getty Images Franco Morbidelli crashed out at Jerez but he remains on top of the Moto2 standings. Statistically, the most attractive cross-class matchups for this season appear thus as of May 7, 2017: Moto2 MotoGP Franco Morbidelli Marc Marquez Tom Luthi Valentino Rossi Miguel Oliveira Maverick Vinales Alex Marquez Jorge Lorenzo Judging from Sunday’s performances, things are about where the suits want them.
The Big Picture Heading to Le Mans
In the premier class, the top four is as tight as Tupperware: Rossi 62 Vinales 60 Marquez 58 Pedrosa 52 This is sweet. This is what fans want, heading into Round 5. The tranching and the standings stand up, I feel, to one another. Some riders have positive momentum, while others are struggling. The Tech 3 Yamaha guys are strong every time out and not intimidated by future hall of famers. Each of the top four is fully aware of the chestnut that in order to finish first, one must first finish. Embed from Getty Images Despite finishing well back in 10th, Valentino Rossi remains on top of the championship standings. Over at Moto2, Morbidelli now leads Luthi by a manageable 11 points, with Oliveira another 15 points back. Alex Marquez and 20-year-old Italian wonder Francesco Bagnaia (second today after successfully fighting off an extended challenge from Mattia Passini) make up the top five. Six riders took the checkered flag within the first ten seconds at Jerez. One of the things Le Mans is known for is sketchy weather. If, as is not uncommon, conditions are less than ideal in northern France two weeks hence, we could see how the top four MotoGP riders perform in the wet, the cold, or both. This could be revealing about those riders with aspirations to top five finishes for the season. Riders like Miller and Petrucci enjoy the rain, while other riders don’t. Wet weather could further tighten the race at the top of both classes. For the focus groups and the suits at Dorna it doesn’t get any better. 2017 MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix Race Results Pos. KTM Riders Come Away Victorious At Hawkstone International MX KTM riders Tony Cairoli and Pauls Jonass clean house before the start of the World Championship season. Begin Press Release: CAIROLI & JONASS ON WINNING STREAK AT MALAGROTTA & HAWKSTONE INTERNATIONAL MX Red Bull KTM’s Tony Cairoli was in excellent form at the second round of the Italian International Motocross Championship at Malagrotta on Sunday. After two straight victories in both the MX1 and the Elite Class, the Italian leaves the second round with a good chance to grab both titles. Meanwhile Jorge Prado finished 3rd in the MX2 class and factory teammate Pauls Jonass won both MX2 motos at Hawkstone International Motocross 2017. The Italian Championship is a popular series that gives riders essential race practice before the start of the 2017 World championship season in Qatar (February 25, 2017). The final round is at Ottobiano next weekend. KTM factory teammate Jorge Prado (ESP) also had a solid day out on the hard pack Italian track to finish third in the MX2 class. He also held onto his overall points lead in the class going into the last round. MX1Tony Cairoli got away well at the start of the MX1 race on the KTM 450 SX-F and was in second behind Romain Febvre. He immediately went on the charge and passed his French rival before the end of the opening lap. Cairoli then settled in at the front and rode there all the way to the flag. KTM factory rider Glenn Coldenhoff (NED) finished sixth in the race and is also sixth in the championship going into the final round. Elite Class Red Bull KTM’s two MX1 riders Cairoli and Coldenhoff both saved the best till last to deliver a strong showing in the day’s final Elite Class race. Cairoli was fast out of his gate, with his MX2 teammate Prado right on his wheel. To the collective joy of his Italian fans, he looked set to dominate the race but slid out in the second lap and dropped back to fifth. Coldenhoff quickly moved into the lead. The race then developed into a thriller with plenty of hard charges amongst the group of four behind Coldenhoff, but the Dutch rider held on at the front for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile Cairoli was on the attack and picked off the opposition, one rider at a time. He grabbed the lead as the race went into the final two laps and went on to take the win. Coldenhoff, who has had the flu this week managed to hold on to fourth. Cairoli: “We’ve had a great weekend at home here at Malagrotta. I won the pole position this morning and then the MX1 race. The little crash in the Elite race made it a bit more difficult but sometimes its good to have to overtake and fight for it. I managed to come back from fifth to win the second race. The track was very good, also very technical and demanding, so I’m very happy about the weekend.” Cairoli added that it was very important to have his feeling and his old racing style back after having some injury problems last season. “I feel great again and I’m trying to train a bit better. It’s working and I see the difference,” he added. Coldenhoff did well, particularly as he had not been able to train during the week. “I think I showed my speed in the elite race. I started in sixth and I moved up to second, then after Tony went down I took the lead and stayed there for about 20 minutes. In the end my power was gone, and I had to slow down and not take any risks. But we know the speed is there and we can run upfront. This is the positive thing to take away from this weekend.” MX2 Prado made a very strong start in the MX2 race and was the early leader. He held off the competition until the last 10 minutes when KTM rider Julien Lieber won the challenge and went to the front. Italy’s Michelle Cervellin then moved up to second place and Prado was third. Prado also had a great start in the Elite Class competing against the bigger bikes but he crashed in the early stages and wasn’t able to recover his position with the leaders. Prado: “I felt good in the practice and was pretty confident going into the first race. I made a small gap but then I made a mistake and went off the track in one corner. The group behind caught me and went past but I fought back. I think I could have won this race but a podium third is not too bad. I also had an awesome start in the second race but then I crashed. I believe I learned a lot today and if I do a good race next weekend at Ottobiano maybe I can be the champion. The track is softer there and that’s better for me.” Pauls Jonass wins the MX2 double at Hawkstone Red Bull KTM’s Pauls Jonass opted to continue his pre-season racing at the Hawkstone International MX in the UK this weekend and came away with two comfortable wins in the MX2 class on his KTM 250 SX-F. He made the trip in the company of Joel Smets, KTM’s Motocross Sport Director, who reported that Jonass had chalked up two confident wins. “Pauls pulled the holeshot in the first race and in the second he was already in lead in the second corner. He didn’t have to push. He just rode at his own rhythm. He was more confident than last weekend in Italy and he controlled the races.” Smets said both the weather and track conditions at the British circuit were good, adding: “It was perfect motocross weather.” Jonass will race next weekend in France. ROUND 1: QATAR
After the cold - snowy winters comes spring and with it, bike racing! Once again it’s in the middle of the desert at Losail that lights went off for the first time of the 2018 season. An opening round which tasted the exact same as last season with Dovi and Marquez fighting out on the line.
1. New alien here to stay
In the whole new motogp clip realised prior to the Qatar race, you can hear a voice say « they say they’re not human, some calls them aliens ». Well, let me tell you that if the alien club is still a thing then Andrea Dovizioso bought himself a place in it last season and he’s definitely here to stay from now on.
At Losail the italian dominated almost every session leading to the race, the only shadow to his weekend being the miss opportunity of a pole position and front row on Saturday. Dovizioso being fast and winning the opening round shouldn’t come as a surprise though as he ended up runner up many time already behind the likes of Rossi or Lorenzo. Losail suits the italian. It also suits the red beast. In a past not so far away, some would remember Stoner’s incredible dominance at the Qatari track. Even though Desmo Dovi fought up to the very last corner and onto the line to get that win, we can easily say it would have been a disappointment for the italian combo to finish anywhere else than on the 1st step this year.
2. (Brake)ing the limits
If the opening round felt like a dream to Dovizioso, it was the exact opposite to his teammate Jorge Lorenzo. The spaniard being on his second year at Ducati, each one of his moves is being looked on with a magnifying glass. The hopes are high, and so is the disappointment. Can we blame Jorge Lorenzo for this first DNF this season ? Clearly no.
It’s true the spaniard struggle the whole weekend, not being able to found a pace giving him a chance to challenge Dovizioso or Petrucci but his pace, pretty much identical to Vinales, in the second half of the race could have pushed him into a top 5 or 6. Lorenzo suffered a strange weekend marked by God’s only knows how many mechanical issues. The biggest one of them happening in the race.
Lorenzo’s crash wasn’t due to mistake on his part like we could have thought at first but to a brake pad which went missing leaving the 30 years old to be in the middle of the track without any working brakes. He later explained he was forced to run wide and let go of his bike once he was in the gravel trap. The scary prospect of having a rider left with no brakes, forced to crash out not to hit a wall or someone else did not shut the mouth of Lorenzo’s haters thought. Oh the joy of being Motogp’s vilain….
3. When the old feels better than the new
Yamaha’s winter and early days of the 2018 season were highly spoken off, especially due to their silly season being cut short with both Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi signing new 2 years deals with the japanese brand before the red lights even went out.
Rossi received a whole lot of question regarding his new contract. It’s true the news is quite exciting as he will be well past 40 in 2020. The italian shut down every questions about it on Sunday night stating this new motogp podium and being able to fight for wins shows it was the right decision to carry on racing.
At this point, even though it feels like this should be his last deal, one can only expect him to stay in the paddock, and most probably on track, for as long as he will enjoy riding these bikes.
If Rossi renewal didn’t come as a surprise, Vinales’ did. The spaniard is struggling in his quest to tame the M1 since he last won a race in the spring of 2017. Being forced into Q1, a bad start and an early part of the race glued in 15th at some point didn’t help his confidence.
Vinales leaves Losail happy though. After month of looking for a working set up, his team decided to go back to what they knew worked. His pace and incredible journey back to a well deserved 6th place in the second half of the race proves that MotoGP’s very own TOP GUN is on the right path to being competitive again.
4. About scary prospects
There’s two names who both stand outs this weekend: Marquez and Zarco.
First, the frenchman. Talks about him are going on since last november and it went crazy since Poncharal’s announcement that tech 3 will be a KTM team next season splitting from Yamaha after more than 20 years together.
Rossi & Vinales’ new deals leave most of us wondering: why isn’t Zarco promoted to the factory team when it’s as clear as water that he could be a real title contender if one would give him an official package ?
After saturday lap record pole position and even though it did not resulted as a win or a podium, the question of his near future is still going on. Rumor has it he could be in talks with KTM and.. the HRC. Would the RCV be a good fit for the frenchman though ? For now, Johann is only happy with his weekend, regretting only an issue with his front tyre past mid race.
Marquez on the other hand did not suffered any problems with his tyres. On a track which is known to be far from one of his favorites, the spaniard took 20 points and a 2nd place with joy.
Even if it’s a now 3-0 for Dovi in terms of last corner battle wins, the simple fact that Marquez was able to fight and came THIS close to get the win at Losail against the power of the Ducatis in the straight should give nightmares to each and everyone of his opponents on the grid.
It’s no surprise the spaniard celebrated his 2nd place like he would have won the race and couldn’t stop telling anybody listening just how happy he was to be so close to Dovizioso. If Marquez is able to do this at Losail, i cannot even begin to imagine what he’ll be do in Austin soon…. Like i said, scary prospect, indeed!
5. Honorable mentions
Alex Rins might leave Losail with a DNF but he surely made an impression all weekend long.
Cal Crutchlow winning the 1st independant place proves just how strong the RCV is getting and that the progress made over the winter are to be taken seriously.
Last minute’s new comer Hafizh Syahrin takes his very first point in MotoGP.
Dani Pedrosa struggled all the way to the race but a very positive bunch of early laps left him feeling great about his weekend overall.

Let’s wrap up this season review with our very own MOTOGP 2017 AWARDS!
Man of the Year : Marc Marquez (duh!)
The man to beat, or - like his rivals on track would rather say - the man that should be locked in a room in the middle of the desert without any escape possible. Hard to imagine who could stop the spaniard from becoming the cherry on the top of the Racing cake.
Helmet of the Season: “El Diablo” - JL99 // “Nicky” - AI29
We cannot choose.
We loved Jorge’s “El Diablo” helmet for the amazing dark red design with the eyes on it. It looked stunning.
But We also adored Andrea’s hommage helmet to Nicky Hayden. The simplicity of the design (simply “Nicky” written on the top of the helmet which was painted as a blue sky) made it gorgeous and stunning and the best fitting hommage. <3
Quote of the Year: Andrea Iannone - “Gang Bang” Tweet
After one hell of a race, Andrea Iannone took on twitter to share a picture of the fight at Phillip Island. The tweet simply said “GANG BANG” ... Has someone told him what it really means yet ... ?
Best Race of the Season: Phillip Island - 2017
Many races were amazing this season but Phillip Island was just extra special. The scenery, the non-stop fight, all of the different brands involve. Really, the only thing the Australian GP missed this year was the Ducati bikes fighting with the other. But that, my friend, would have made it, the race of the century!
Save of the Year : Marc Marquez - Valencia GP (save of the DECADE!)
Each and every save by Marquez is out of this world but the Valencia GP one was something else.
I mean... It could have cost him a world title...!!
The “What do you mean i’m just a rookie” Award: Johann Zarco
Johann Zarco doesn’t give a damn F! about being a rookie. He doesn’t care about who else is on track either. We should have know that at the very moment Zarco made VR46 looked like a GrandPa’ at Losail...
Pass of the Season: 93 vs 04 - Austrian GP - Final Lap
It takes some ba*** to go head to head with Marc Marquez on a final lap of a race. When it’s for the win, it’s even more special !
“Error 404: Communication Faillure” : Mapping 8
You know what we hate more than team orders ? Hidden team order. Mapping 8 simply looked like the modern version of Star Wars’ Order 66.
Crash of the Season: Marc Marquez - Catalan GP
Come on, there’s NO WAY you’ve forgot about that one! Marc Marquez suffered many crashes this season - as per usual - but he only had one in pit-lane... Off the bike... #Stilllaughingmyassoffthinkingofit
The “Better than a Soap Opera” Award: SR/JM/MV and their girlfriends
I suggest you go have a look at each of these riders’ instagram and twitter account to understand... In other news, Scott Redding now has a sheep pet!
Nose Job of the Year: Andrea Iannone
Don’t even try to deny it Andrea. We saw the before/after photos...
Fan Question of the Year: “Your girlfriend or Racing” - Danilo Petrucci
The answer is even better really “either i change girlfriend or she starts working”. Wow!
The “They all predicted it and... It never happened” Award: Vinales
After the pre-season tests, Maverick had already won the title if you were listenning to most experts... Like a famous 69 always said “That's why we line up on Sunday, you never know what's going to happen”.
Best “looking like a dumba$$” moment of the Season: Andrea Iannone - Phillip Island QP Session
Andrea Iannone wanted to get a tow from Marc Marquez at Phillip Island during the QP session this year. The spaniard had other plans. Better than an explanation, have a look at the whole scene here: #HowToLooseYourTow
The “Fans didn’t asked for that” Award: Valentino Rossi - Misano
For Valentino to miss a race - any race - it’s already a nightmare for the fans. For him to miss his home round, to miss Misano, there’s not even words to describe it... yet judging by the F-ING weather they had this weekend, i bet Vale was fine with not racing that day!
Weirdest looking fairing Award: Ducati
It’s a plane! It’s a Shark! It’s a Hammer Head Shark Duca-Plane Bike !
The “They didn’t see that coming” Award: Yamaha
They won 4 races. In total. In the whole season. ONLY 4 RACES !!!!!!

ROUND 1: LOSAIL, QATAR
* Batman Voice *
After 5 months in hell they've comeback with one goal: to give us the best championship we could imagine. Yep our now 5 Fantastics and their acolytes are finally back after what has been one very busy winter break due to several major bike swaps. Who are the winners and the losers at that game ?
1. Time to give Maverick a real superhero name
The young spaniard made a sensational debut with his new Movistar Yamaha Team as he took both pole position (even though we were denied a real QP session) and the victory after battling hard with Ducati's eternal Mister 2nd place, Dovizioso.
Top Gun, as many calls him, made zero mistakes during the winter break toping each of the 4 tests leaving everybody with very few questions as to know if he would be a title contender this season. Answer was Yes and, after yesterday night, it's now YES (with capital letters. Yes, that makes a huge difference).
Vinales took a great start but it's another Yamaha riders who took the allshot. He then was quietly following the leaders waiting for his time. At that point of the race i've found myself saying "well Mr Prodigy is not doing any kind of walking on water move, maybe they're all too soon when giving him the "alien" status". I guess i was wrong. I do still think he has many things to prove but his talent is not one of them. The combo rider + bike + tyres works perfectly, his adaptation to the M1 (can we really call that an adaptation though ?) is complete.
I do think his way of riding the M1 is far less superbe than Lorenzo's silky smooth style was, yet the results speaks for themselves: he's in for a great year and Losail's victory is probably one of many to come.
2. One day, it will be Dovi’s turn
We should count how many times has Dovizioso comes close to victory at Losail. I bet quite a few.
Once Johann Zarco was out, it looks like Dovizioso had it in the bag. It almost felt easy for him. This year's Ducati seems even better than last season's and Andrea just knows how to make it turn. In the straight, well, there's no comparison possible. Vinales was smart to gap the italian as much as possible in the very tipsy curvy part of the track because each time he did not, the desmo took no prisoners on the line coming and passing him like a bullet fired out of a gun.
Now thay Dovizioso is free from Iannone in the Ducati box (come one, by know you do know these tow hates each others...) and as all eyes are on Lorenzo's adaptation to the bike, the italian is stress-free and will certainly make a brilliant season (if nobody takes him out THIS TIME).
3. Never doubt Valentino Rossi
The never retiring rider was far from thinking he'd finish the Qatar GP with a podium.
All weekend long he was nowhere to be seen, never really on the pace and totally distanced by his new teammate. In fact, it’s been this way almost all winter.
During the "will they race / will they not" drama Pre-Race due to rain starting to fall in the pitlane and making 3 turns from the track quite questionable, he even looks like he was SO READY to be done with this awful weekend.
I've read on twitter someone saying "Rossi is always lost up until Race time". That could not be more true. There is something happening with him once the lights are off which is just out of this world. No matter how much he was struggling, how far behind he was, he always founds his way up to the front. This could prove itself to be very useful when it will be time to count points by the end of the season judging by all the youngsters so ready to kick him out of the way.
4. Losail and where to found the Hondas
Losail isn't really Honda's best track. Except for Stoner and Marquez, all Honda riders just never really do well at the season opener. This year was no exception.
Marquez ends up in 4th after what was, in his own words, a wrong tyre choice going from the hard he had previously favored to a medium thinking it would allow him to have more grip on the cooling track. The RCV didn't liked that and, after only a few laps, his tires were not cooperating well anymore. Still he took home a 4th place which lead us to believe this Marquez is the one from 2016 while the "all or nothing" one from 2015 is clearly buried.
Teammate Pedrosa had a better winter but Losail is a track he most probably hates. I cannot really remember him saying he felt well there once, and it was the same this weekend. Yet things are much more encouraging that they seems for the Japanese brand and if that was not for Crutchlow's double crash they could have swapped quite a few good result.
5. Bleu Blanc Rouge
Right when the lights went off i can imagine most riders thinking "who the hell is that guy leading us" and for good reason.
Rookie and new Yamaha comer, french man Johann Zarco, made quite the impression on Sunday's evening at Losail making his team Boss, Hervé Pacharal, the happiest man on Earth. It's been a long way coming for these two to work together in motogp. The french guys finally had the opportunity to do it when both Smith and Pol Espargaro decided to leave for KTM last season. The double Moto 2 World Champion, who was refused a place at Suzuki for Iannone and Rins, made a point showing everybody just how much of a pure talent he is.
He looks smooth, precise and easy on the bike. Yes he did crash but when he did he was already gaping some guys answering to the names of Marquez, Vinales, Dovizioso & Rossi... Not bad for a start ?!
I Keep your eyes on Zarco. As we saw in Moto2 he has a unique way of being and work during a race weekend. He's not crazy, not devoured by ambition but if he feels like he can do something, he's not gonna be the one playing it safe.
6. Lorenzo’s challenge ahead
Lorenzo had as much of a bad debut with Ducati has Vinales had a good one with Yamaha.
Yet are these two situations really comparable ? I do not think so. Jumping from the Yamaha to the Ducati is like going from playing with a cute little puppy in your garden to be trapped with a wild lion ready to make a kit-kat break of you.
Most people have very high expectations with Lorenzo on this new challenge. Will he do what Rossi couldn't ? Will he be Ducati's new Stoner ? Reality is that it's far from being fair to put him under so much pressure when even hiw own team does not.
First, judging by the desmosedici's level last season, there's no way he could do worst than Rossi as the italian one was literally riding a P.O.S. back in his red days. Then, as sad as it is, there is only one Stoner and he's never coming back.
Was Losail's race a bad omen for Lorenzo's season ? Not necessarily. He was positive all weekend and found himself being quite Lorenzo-consistent during the warm-up doing a his whole first run into mid 1:56. During the race he was lapping at the same level as the front group but finished outside the top 10 after a mistake he did during lap 1.
The spaniard needs time for adaptation. He has only ride the bike for something like 15 DAYS so far. Dovizioso has been working on it for years!
He also needs to learn how to be patient. Yes, patience is key sometimes. It had me laughing because i was so pissed off to see him act like he did on the grid during the whole "Rain/No Rain - Race/No race" drama. While Marquez and Vinales were both focus and into their bubbles, he was agitated like a child before christmas going God knows how many time back into the pit-lane and making sure Capirossi has understood he really didn’t wanted it to be GO.
There is two way this could end: it can become a very long and awful season for Lorenzo, or he can turn it into a learning process to better himself and the bike before having a go at the championship next year. Either way, i’ll still put a few penny on 1 or 2 wins in 2017, after all he’s still one of the best riders in this world...

MXGP All Set for Assen
The FIM Motocross World Championship has reached its penultimate round at the MXGP of the Netherlands in Assen this weekend. The Dutch TT circuit has been transformed into a Motocross Championship venue full of sand. Last year’s Dutch motocross fans witnessed the MXGP Championship being decided as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli took his 9th World Title. This year however the crowd is hoping to see their fellow Dutchman, Jeffrey Herlings, take his first ever MXGP title on Sunday.
Joining the World Championship classes of MXGP and MX2 is the Women’s Motocross World Championship and the European Championships of EMX125 presented by FMF Racing and EMX250. In the fight for the Women’s title is MXFONTA Racing Syneco’s Kiara Fontanesi and the Netherlands’ Nancy Van de Ven after Yamaha has announced the Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan, who leads the points by 21, will not compete in the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.
In the class of EMX125 presented by FMF Racing MJC Yamaha’s Thibault Benistant has a 33 point lead over the injured KTM Junior rider Rene Hofer, and another 6 over Mattia Guadagnini. While the EMX250 championship was wrapped up in Bulgaria by Honda RedMoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame several other riders are looking for a race win to end their season.
MXGP Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has a massive 95-point lead over his teammate and 2017 World Champion Antonio Cairoli. Only 100 points remain on the table this season and Herlings is positioned better than ever to not only claim his first ever MXGP Championship but to do so in Sunday’s Race 1 and in front of his home crowd.
Cairoli is not one to give up the fight but is also one of the most experienced and patient riders in the world. Rebounding from one injury to another throughout this year Cairoli comes to Assen with the memories of 2017 when he claimed his 9th World title here. Cairoli will be one to watch and see how he performs after a difficult MXGP of Turkey 2 weeks ago where he left with a new injury to his right hand.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle holds 3rd in the points and has reached the podium the last several rounds. Last year’s visit to Assen ended with a back injury for Desalle but the Belgian clearly has a much better outcome in mind this year. Going for another a podium Desalle will look to finish a spot if not two higher than his recent 3rd place results.
Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is another rider who has made his way back on the podium recently. Gajser speed has been comparable to Herlings but maintaining it lap after lap is the missing element. Gajser finished 29th here last year and 18th the year prior. The Slovenian will be looking not just to improve but to return to his winning form here in 2015.
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre crashed hard at the MXGP of Turkey in a practice session and did not compete. With a broken rib still on the mend Febvre will also sit out the action this weekend. Febvre was second here in 2017 and was on track for another good result before the Turkish crash.
Also to watch this weekend is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff in what is a home GP along with the debut of Team HRC’s Brian Bogers who returns to racing after a preseason injury took him out of contention.
Last to mention but not least is Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie and Todd Waters. Anstie has been fighting for better results lately and could potentially score his best finish this week after reaching the podium here in 2017. Waters meanwhile has moved to Honda Redmoto Assomotor and will compete with the new team in Assen.
MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 833 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 738 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 619 p.; 4. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 591 p.; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 544 p.; 6. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 514 p.; 7. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 475 p.; 8. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 423 p.; 9. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 404 p.; 10. Max Anstie (GBR, HUS), 328 p.
MX2 MX2’s championship fight has been building between the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider of Jorge Prado and Pauls Jonass. The young Spaniard and the defending World Champion from Latvia have been on another level this year but a collision in Turkey has brought new fuel into the fire. With two weekend of racing remaining it is anyone’s guess who will be crowned champion. Prado is the statistical favorite this weekend after winning here last year and taking third in 2016 as a rookie.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen has the 3rd spot in the championship standings and won on sand earlier this season in Latvia. Olsen and his teammate Thomas Covington have both been fast and fighting for wins but struggled with consistency. Covington found the winning combination last round perhaps it is time for Olsen to do the same this weekend? Olsen has two 5th place overall results coming from here in 2016 and 2017 while been in the top ten but never the top 5 on the circuit.
Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team’s Ben Watson has been working to find the right set up on his new 2019 Yamaha. Work appears to be going in the right direction however as he put in one of the fastest lap times at the MXGP of Turkey. Watson’s Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Teammate Jago Geerts will also line up at home this weekend after missing the last three rounds of racing with a broken collar bone.
Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen will be one to watch in Assen as well, the South African born Dutchman has been impressive this season especially since his win in Indonesia. Riding for the Netherlands at the 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Vlaanderen will not only be busy he will be the focus of many fans this week.
MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 773 points; 2. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 749 p.; 3. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 593 p.; 4. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 551 p.; 5. Thomas Covington (USA, HUS), 525 p.; 6. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, HON), 483 p.; 7. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 346 p.; 8. Michele Cervellin (ITA, YAM), 337 p.; 9. Hunter Lawrence (AUS, HON), 305 p.; 10. Henry Jacobi (GER, HUS), 301 p.

Mugello: hoist the colours
After the French GP and another pivotal weekend in the title fight, it’s time for MotoGP™ to head to more important home turf: Italy, a land of legends and home of the stunning, high-speed Mugello. For the likes of Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Ducati and Aprilia, there really is no place like home.
The Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley arrives at a pivotal point in the title fight. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was faultless in Jerez and did it again in France to make it three wins in a row for the Spaniard for the first time since 2014 – an ominous sign? That it may be, but rivals falling by the way side has played its own part – and Mugello has more often been a hurdle for Marquez rather than a talisman venue. Last year, he was sixth.
His 2017 title rival Andrea Dovizioso will be banking on that. Not only did ‘DesmoDovi’ get collected in the three-rider collision in Spain, he then also crashed out in Le Mans – from the lead. That leaves him well down the order but the season is long and the Italian made history at Mugello last year as he took the first premier class win for an Italian on an Italian bike in Italy since 1974. It was a stunner and it kicked his campaign into gear, but that first win doesn’t overshadow two of the men with whom Dovizioso shares the grid, both of whom have impeccable records at Mugello.
One of those is Jorge Lorenzo, his teammate. Winner from 2011 to 2016 every year with the sole exception of 2014, Mugello really has been Lorenzo’s land. And after leading in Jerez and again in Le Mans, the number 99’s season is looking up – as is Valentino Rossi’s (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), the other CV of note.
Rossi was back on the podium in France for the first time since Qatar and although the Italian said the venue was an especially good one for the M1, that’s a good boost ahead of Mugello – where Rossi was king from 2004 to 2008 and has seven wins at the track. And as much as the crowd show awesome support for many home riders and manufacturers, there’s no one quite like the ‘Doctor’ for Mugello. The air is heavy with yellow haze when Rossi is in town; the fans like nowhere on Earth and the stands packed with 46-emblazoned merchandise.
It was Rossi’s teammate Maverick Viñales who got the podium last year, however, coming home second and putting in an impressive performance on the Yamaha for the first time at the venue. He was, however, slightly upstaged by the man in third, Danilo Petrucci (Alma Pramac Racing), who took the Independent Team not only to the podium but to the podium at home in Italy – something that left them somewhat speechless in the aftermath. Petrucci is fresh from the rostrum in France, too, and looking to add to his CV.
That enough contenders yet? There are even more. Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) has won at Mugello, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) should be better recovered from his Q1 highside in Le Mans, Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) needs to bounce back after taking pole at home and then crashing out – the fate also suffered by Andrea Iannone on race day, who has a point to prove and has been on pole at Mugello as well as winning in the intermediate class there twice.
Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) will want to be top rookie on home turf, and Aprilia Racing Team Gresini are racing at home, too – looking to add some more good points after a top ten for Aleix Espargaro in France.
It’s time for round six in the Tuscan hills, and time for Mugello to welcome its prodigal sons back home – with home glory, 25 points and 2018 momentum up for grabs on race day, this one will be a showstopper.
Tune in on Sunday at 14:00 (GMT +2).
Championship Standings 1 – Marc Marquez (SPA) HONDA 95 points 2 – Maverick Viñales (SPA) YAMAHA 59 3 – Johann Zarco (FRA) YAMAHA 58 4 – Valentino Rossi (ITA) YAMAHA 56 5 – Danilo Petrucci (ITA) DUCATI 54

MXGP Lines up in Latvia
6 rounds into 2018 and the MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship has a new winner coming into Kegums, Latvia for this weekend’s MXGP of Latvia: Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle has added to the excitement of the title chase.
Last year we saw the first dominant performance of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings as he took double victories on the sandy circuit. Latvia was an important race in the 2017 championship chase not only seeing Herlings return to form but also a massive and costly crash from Team HRC’s Tim Gajser.
As for the MX2 class the race will hold significant value for the series points leader and defending MX2 World Champion Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass. Jonass, a Latvian himself, will have the full backing of the fans and look to win his home GP for the first time ever after narrowly losing out to rookie success of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen, who took his first ever GP victory here last year.
The circuit in Kegums, very close to the capital of Latvia, Riga, has seen the World Championship since 2009 with its sandy soil and technical surface. The venue is world class and in addition to the MXGP World Championship the circuit hosted the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in 2014. Throughout the past years the track has hosted dramatic racing, challenged the world’s best riders, and the same is expected this year.
The weekend will be a busy one as well packed with both MXGP and EMX racing. Adding to the schedule is the classes of EMX250 and EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing. The two classes each have 79 riders entered including points leaders Martin Barr in EMX250 and Rene Hofer in EMX125 presented by FMF Racing.
MXGP The MXGP class prior to the Russian GP was dominated by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli. However Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle is gaining ground on the pair of KTM riders and starting what could be a three way battle for the championship after his win only a week and a half ago in Russia.
Last year Herlings found his winning form on the Kegums circuit edging out his rival Cairoli while Desalle finished just off the podium with 2-5 finishes for 4th. Desalle has raced the circuit since its first appearance on the MXGP calendar in 2009 where he finished 2nd. Cairoli meanwhile will race his 222nd GP and has won in Latvia 4 times including the circuit’s first World Championship race in 2009 with 3 2nd place finishes and one 5th. Kegums is clearly a strong track for the Sicilian and one where we may see him atop the podium at the end of the weekend.
BOS GP’s Evgeny Bobryshev found the podium in Latvia last year for one of the best performances of the season. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is also returning to form and was fast on the Kegums circuit last year before a crash took him out of racing. Gajser won the Latvian GP in 2016 and likely will challenge for the podium this weekend.
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre sits 4th in the championship standings but last year he came away from Latvia with a disappointing 13th overall. Nevertheless Febvre has reached the Latvian podium twice, in both 2015 and 2016.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin is another rider to watch. Paulin, currently 5th in points, finished 5th in Latvia last year but had a strong 2nd in 2015 and has never missed the top ten in the 7 times he’s raced the circuit.
Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Shaun Simpson has yet to decide wether to race this weekend after a crash took him out of contention in Russia only a week and a half ago. A decision from the charismatic Brit is expected later this week.
Team HRC will return to a two rider MXGP effort in Latvia with the fill in ride of Todd Waters for the injured Brian Bogers. Waters is familiar with the circuit after racing to a 12th overall in 2015 and has been working hard with the team on testing leading into the weekend.
MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 286 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 263 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 212 p.; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 203 p.; 5. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 180 p.; 6. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 152 p.; 7. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 150 p.; 8. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 147 p.; 9. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 135 p.; 10. Julien Lieber (BEL, KAW), 113 p.
2017 MXGP of Latvia MXGP top 3: 1. Jeffrey Herlings 2. Antonio Cairoli 3. Evgeny Bobryshev
MX2 In the MX2 class Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen will be looking to repeat his winning Latvian performance from 2017 but will be up against the formidable Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo of Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado.
For Jonass this is his home GP and a very special one which he comes into with the momentum of dominating the MXGP of Russia and leading the MX2 championship. Last year Jonass missed the out on taking the win managed a strong 2nd place to the roar of his home fans.
Prado is now 20 points back in the standings from his teammate Jonass but has been the one rider so far this season that has consistently pushed the pace of the reigning champ. Prado’s only race on the circuit was last year where just missed the podium in 4th.
Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen will hope to bring his new Honda to the podium for the first time in 2018 this Sunday. Vlaanderen has been close with strong races but with the podium result of last year in mind, this may be his weekend.
Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson reached the podium for the first time in his MX2 career just over a week ago in Russia after barely missing it on several prior occasions. Watson now 4th in the points will look to keep the momentum going and improve upon his 19 overall in 2017.
F&H Racing Team’s Jed Beaton is running 5th in the championship with his most recent result being 8th overall in Russia. Ben Watson’s Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Teammate Vsevolod Brylyakov will miss the racing due to a knee injury suffered at his home MXGP of Russia. The unfortunate turn of events for Brylyakov comes after his best qualifying performance in 4th and a season high 3rd place race result in Trentino.
Also notable to mention is the possible return of Honda 114 Motorsport’s Hunter Lawrence. Lawrence who suffered an injury in Trentino showed speed early in the season and was expected to contend for the title.
MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 266 points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 246 p.; 3. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 219 p.; 4. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 176 p.; 5. Jed Beaton (AUS, KAW), 156 p.; 6. Calvin Vlaanderen (RSA, HON), 130 p.; 7. Vsevolod Brylyakov (RUS, YAM), 127 p.; 8. Conrad Mewse (GBR, KTM), 108 p.; 9. Henry Jacobi (GER, HUS), 104 p.; 10. Thomas Covington (USA, HUS), 102 p.;
2017 MXGP of Latvia MX2 top 3: 1. Thomas Kjer Olsen 2. Pauls Jonass 3. Calvin Vlaanderen

MXGP set for the European Start
It is time for the 2nd round of the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship, the MXGP of Europe. After the epic season opening race in Patagonia Argentina the MXGP and MX2 riders are ready to take on the first European stop of the season. For several contenders this will be there first race as both MXGP and MX2 have 40 riders entered. The dark sand of Valkenswaard will also host the first round of the European Motocross Championship’s EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing.
The EMX classes have a massive number of entries this weekend, to be exact 90 in EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and 50 in EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing. There are many new names to both classes but also be sure to watch out for the returning faces such as Brad Anderson or Mike Kras in 300cc.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass will go to Valkenswaard with the first GP victory in the pocket. While Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, who is tied for the lead in the MXGP point standings, among other top contenders well look to take the overall win.
MXGP Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings comes to Valkenswaard on the heels of an epic comeback and last lap pass for the win at the opening round of 2018. Herlings has been extremely successful on the Valkenswaard circuit in the past and the track is not only his home GP but sand as well making him a force to reckon with this weekend.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli is tied in the points standings after swapping wins with Herlings last time out. With the 9-time champ losing out on the overall in Patagonia he is without doubt looking to beat Herlings at home. Cairoli has claimed the GP overall in Valkenswaard an impressive 6 times and 5 of those have been in the premier MXGP class. While it has been now 3 years since the Italian saw the top step here, perhaps this weekend could be his turn once again.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle has never won in Valkenswaard but showed great speed with his 3rd overall to start the season. The Belgian is joined by fellow countryman, Julien Lieber, under the factory Kawasaki awning. Lieber rode to an impressive top ten in his MXGP debut and is certainly a rookie to watch.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin was under the weather the week of the first GP but still managed to place in the top ten. A healthy Paulin will be hard to deal with seeing he won the MXGP of Europe at Valkenswaard last year.
2016 Valkenswaard winner, Team Monster Energy Yamaha’s Romain Febvre and his teammate, Jeremy Van Horebeek who placed 3rd here last year, both had solid showings to start the season not only by battling up front but also by giving the Factory Yamaha 2 top 5 finishes.
Joining the list of riders who call Valkenswaard a home GP is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff. Coldenhoff is looking to bounce back from a troublesome weekend in Argentina where he fell hard in Saturday’s Qualifying and then struggled to place well Sunday.
The 2015 MXGP World Champion, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser was forced to miss the first round with an off season injury but he is slated to return to action this weekend. Gajser will be the first MXGP rider to line up for Team HRC this year.
TM Factory Racing’s Max Nagl could impress this Sunday after scoring a top ten in Patagonia with his new team. The German also was on the podium here in 2016.
Jeremy Seewer, the newest addition to the Wilvo Yamaha MXGP Team, has already shown he has the speed to compete in the MXGP class after racing in the front of the field during his rookie race in Patagonia-Argentina. Second here in Valkenswaard last year the #91 was one of the strongest of MX2 competitors.
MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 47 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 47 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 40 p.; 4. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 34 p.; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 34 p.; 6. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 30 p.; 7. Shaun Simpson (GBR, YAM), 24 p.; 8. Julien Lieber (BEL, KAW), 22 p.; 9. Maximilian Nagl (GER, TM), 21 p.; 10. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 21 p.
2017 MXGP of Europe MXGP Top 3 1. Gautier Paulin 2. Jeffrey Herlings 3. Jeremy Van Horebeek
MX2 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is continuing 2018 where he left off in 2017 which as at the top of the standings. Jonass didn’t lead every lap in Argentina but perhaps more impressive was his ability to real in many consider to be his title contender this year, Honda 114 Motorsports’ Hunter Lawrence.
All things considered though Lawrence was impressive in his own way last weekend, not only did he hint was he dealing with unknown personal issues but it was his first race on a new team and new bike. Lawrence took the first FOX Holeshot of the season and will likely be a contender for the win this weekend.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen rode to an impressive 2nd overall to start the season and now that he is no longer a rookie he has matured. Last year we saw an inconsistent version of the #19 but this weekend will give us the first hint on if he can have two strong finishes back to back.
Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Ben Watson surprised many in Argentina as he battled for the spot on the overall podium before coming up just one point shy. Another surprise was Watson’s teammate, Vsevelod Brylakov, who jumped right back into the top ten in his first race back after being injured at the Valkenswaard circuit last year.
LRT KTM’s Davy Pootjes will be one to watch this weekend as well. For Pootjes this is his home GP where he will look to replicate the Fox Holeshot of the last round and fight for the podium.
Other riders to mention include Bike IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen who both saw bad luck in one of the two opening races, a bike issue for Sanayei and a start crash for Vlaanderen. However both showed resilience with strong finishes to pair with their lack of luck.
Hunter Lawrence isn’t the only privateer to watch this weekend though as Brent Van doninck had a break out ride here last year with a 3rd overall. The Husqvarna 8biano Motorsport rider from Belgium is no stranger to the sand and more than capable of a top five if not another podium this year.
MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 50 points; 2. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 42 p.; 3. Hunter Lawrence (AUS, HON), 37 p.; 4. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 36 p.; 5. Jed Beaton (AUS, KAW), 27 p.; 6. Vsevolod Brylyakov (RUS, YAM), 24 p.; 7. Henry Jacobi (GER, HUS), 21 p.; 8. Darian Sanayei (USA, KAW), 20 p.; 9. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 20 p.; 10. Calvin Vlaanderen (RSA, HON), 19 p.
2017 MXGP of Europe MX2 Top 3 1. Pauls Jonass 2. Jeremy Seewer 3. Brent Van donick
Antonio Cairoli and Benoit Paturel start strong at the MXGP of Germany

Pemutihan pajak Kendaraan Wilayan DKI Jakarta 2017
Berlaku Hanya Denda Administrasi
Semoga bermanfaat ya Sob!
