❝ LONG LIVE ❞ — kageyama tobio
Tumblr media
cw. manager fem!reader, friends to lovers, mutual pining, timeskip!tobio, the first years are graduating, light swearing (like once), possibly ooc word count. ~ 1.9k synopsis. tobio takes this seemingly last opportunity to tell you how he feels, aka procrastinator kags is in denial up until the last minute (you’re no better)
Tumblr media
it didn't quite hit you just yet after karasuno's last match of the nationals, but it's all coming back to you now.
standing before the double doorway looking into the empty gymnasium, the memories filled with days and nights of blood sweat and tears come rushing back all at once. wins, losses, celebrations and disappointment — this place was a time capsule of the flavours of youth.
"oi kageyama, remember when sawamura-san didn't let us hand in our club application forms until we got along?" shoyo chirps, dodging a smack to the head from tobio.
tsukishima chimes in with a scoff, "don't lie to yourself, you still don't get along."
giggling, you lock eyes with yachi, recalling kiyoko telling both of you the story when you first joined the team as two new freshman managers. some things never change.
the six of you were a whirlwind of chaos — on the court, you were a force to be reckoned with, part of the monster generation. to you, they were the people that pushed you to keep going, the ones that effortlessly turn your frown upside down with their silly antics, even at the cost of your embarrassment. precious ones that lifted you up in tough times and cheered with you in the good.
god, you're already tearing up.
overwhelmed with nostalgia, you turn to them with glossy eyes and an airy chuckle, "guys, thank you for everything."
yamaguchi whines, lightly hammering his fists into your back, "stop it, you're going to make me cry!"
throwing your arm around his shoulder, your laugh bubbles out as the first tear falls, "i'm sorry, i'm sorry!"
tobio wants so badly to just reach out and brush the tears away from your face, you're so pretty, hell he'd even take you into his arms if he could. he's been doing a good job at pushing his feelings down but as the days towards graduation started looming, they've been crawling their way back up to the surface and he has no idea what to do with himself.
he watches and yearns for the day that you can be comfortable enough with him to initiate casual touches and physical affection. sometimes he wonders if you're avoiding him on purpose, you seem to be just fine with everyone else.
you catch your gaze wandering to tobio and find him silently staring off into space and looking almost deep in thought, the crease between his brows doing little to mask his inner conflict. he's been quiet for most of today, not that he typically has many words to say, but even cusses at shoyo were few and far between.
you give him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps the emotions of it all are getting to him and he's coming to terms with it. that doesn't stop you from worrying though, letting your eyes linger on him for a while longer before your attention gets pulled away by yachi — dragging her friend over to take a commemorative picture of all six of you, wanting to recreate the batch photo taken at one of the home games last season.
you find yourself situated between tobio and tsukishima again, donned with academic caps in the same arrangement as the last time, but something about the aura feels different now.
yachi’s friend is yelling at everyone to gather closer to fit in the frame, namely tobio, and your heart’s bursting out of your chest, “kageyama, move closer to her, you’re getting cut off!”
is it normal to have heart palpitations? in an attempt to get this over and done with, your thoughts race, hand clenching just thinking about what you’re about to do. you know what fuck it, throwing caution to the wind, you link your arm with his and pull him closer, briefly catching the look of surprise on his face.
you feel him stiffen next to you and you almost regret your decision in fear of making him uncomfortable, being this close to releasing your grip on his arm. it dissipates as quickly as it came though as he relaxes to your touch, almost leaning into you.
your flush as his side presses against yours. it's a welcome feeling, but your mind is short circuiting. for a second you forget that you're supposed to be posing for a photo, but a genuine smile comes as easily as breathing. this feels natural and as cliche as it sounds, you fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
harbouring feelings for tobio is uncharted territory — he wasn’t one for grand declarations, but rather the little moments that can easily slip past your fingers if you don’t pay attention. not that it mattered to you, your eyes were always on him. everything he did, every touch, drew your in like a moth to a flame, and you so desperately wanted to pull away to spare yourself the pain of rejection.
what once were innocent vending machine yogurt runs between classes became walking home together when practice ran late. you chalked it up to him being kind since your place was on the way to his anyway, though you'd be lying to yourself if you said you didn't hold on to the slim possibility that he just wanted to spend more time with you alone.
spending the last three years suppressing your feelings for tobio was akin to the struggle of closing a suitcase that's obviously overflowing. but it never made sense to pursue them, as much as you wanted to — you knew very well that volleyball is number one to him and he doesn't have space in his heart for devotion outside of that. no room for distractions. whatever happens, you'd be satisfied just having him in your life, yours or not.
but you just couldn't bring yourself to let go.
on the contrary, tobio firmly believes that you deserve better, better than him, more than a socially awkward dumbass whose entire personality is volleyball, someone who will treat you right and show you off like the glimmering gem you are.
he’s not well versed in anything other than the sport he’s dedicated most of his youth to — he’s always had difficulty juggling his passions with other commitments in his life and more than anything, he’s afraid. afraid of not being good enough for you.
after what seems like a lifetime in a span of a minute, the photos have been taken and you're reluctantly pulling away, shyly avoiding eye contact with tobio. you hate to admit that the close proximity was comfortable, you liked it a little too much. this only leads to you craving more and you're gutted that moments like this will be even harder to come by.
in hopes of distracting yourself from your thoughts, you begin to review the shots with shoyo, "kageyema looks constipated! aw i like this one, your smile is so pretty! wait why're you both blushing?"
unbeknownst to you, tobio's staring at the spot where your arm was interlinked with his. to him, you initiating the action felt like a silent declaration, that you were willing to take the step and just needed a little push. he had an idea.
later that evening, after a quick catch-up with your kouhai, it's about time to head home. with a heavy heart, you're reluctantly bidding goodbye to everyone and you're already feeling more tears threatening to spill over the surface. yes, you're being dramatic, there's literally a lunch meetup planned for next weekend.
you sneak a glance at tobio, and you're not surprised to find that he’s already looking at you with an unreadable expression, choosing to return him a small smile that doesn’t quite reach your eyes. there's been some kind of an odd tension since the stunt you pulled earlier and you're not sure what to make of it.
“wait—” he’s calling your name, “…can i walk you home? for old time’s sake.”
for old time’s sake, you can't help but wince at the implications. damn that hurts, it sounds like the beginning of a goodbye.
not trusting your voice, you nod, letting him catch up before starting your journey again. you notice how close he is when he's falling into a step with you, the slight swing in your arm causing your knuckles to brush against his. none of you make an effort to withdraw, basking in the little contact like an anchor that binds the both of you together.
"so uh—" both of you speak up at the same time and your heads whip to look at each other, eyebrows raised and laughing.
you gesture with your hand to let him speak as his eyes return to the road ahead, internally thanking the darker night setting for the opportunity to gaze at his boyish looks and side profile. he's so pretty.
"so i wanted to talk to you about something." tobio stutters, "as you know, I'm not very good with words." with a soft smile, you nod, encouraging him to continue.
"do you know the feeling when you see a really cool spiker that you want to set the ball to? that's kind of how I feel about you."
slightly puzzled, you freeze in your steps to process his statement.
he waves his hands in a panic, "wait i'm sorry what i mean is— there's something really fascinating about you and i... want to explore that."
you almost miss it, but he adds, almost whispering, "i like you a lot and i want to try this out, if you'll have me."
stunned. pleasantly surprised. happy. disbelief. your mouth lightly falls open in shock, the script you initially planned in your head for this moment lost in the passing breeze, "i— of course, i feel the same way. to be honest, i just never had the guts to confess."
illuminated by the street lamps in the otherwise empty road, tobio's eyes shine with newfound hope, the flecks of blue almost glowing in the dim light, more beautiful than any ocean.
"but what about volleyball?" you can't help but ask, staring at his shoes in an attempt to ground yourself and shyly twiddling your thumbs, "i don't want to get in the way of your dreams."
shaking his head, he steps closer to you, wordlessly calling for your attention, look at me. "tch, you're more important to me than volleyball, dumbass."
his hands find themselves on your waist and before you even register, he's pulling you into a hug, your forehead clumsily bumping against his chin as he sputters out an apology. a small breathless giggle slips past your lips as you tuck yourself into the crook of his neck, sighing in relief.
“what?” he mutters, chuckling lightly as he tenderly rests his head atop of yours.
cheeks warm from the exchange, you wrap your arms around his neck, absentmindedly playing with the strands of his hair. your heart pounds with affection unspoken, yet so apparent.
"nothing, this has just been a long time coming."
the two of you will talk about this more in the days to come, but for now, you stay tangled in an embrace, savouring the first of many moments together.

The Promise of a Second Chance
Hi!! Here's a story done a million of times, but I wanted to write my version. Happy reading!!!!
You can find it here on a Ao3.
Chapter 1: The Return
Chapter Text
For Kageyama, this Wednesday afternoon was like many others before it. He could be found catching his breath, adjacent to the net, in a particularly intense training session with the Schweiden Alders.
He was always the first to arrive and often the last to leave. Among the trio of coaches, it had become a common joke to bet on the time their star setter would finish the day's practice. Speculation swirled that Kageyama had even slept in the locker room once just to train a little bit more, but nobody knew if it was true or if it was just Kōrai Hoshiumi teasing his teammate, a hobby the small man had picked up since joining the team.
The setter couldn’t stand this little ball of energy. Perhaps it was because he was sensitive, or simply because Hoshiumi reminded him of a former teammate with the same build, who occupied too much space in Kageyama's thoughts, especially today...
His coach blew a whistle, grounding Kageyama once more. They were about to split their team in two for a practice match. This was usually Kageyama's favorite part of the day.
Except today, his heart wasn't in it.
The setter paused for a water break and glanced at his phone again. Nothing. Nothing more than the last messages from his friends. He had reread them at least twenty times today.
Yamaguchi, Yachi, and even Tsukishima had taken the time to wish Hinata a safe journey home in a group chat they all shared. Kageyama didn’t remember participating in it, but he read attentively every word, especially since a redhead had indicated that he was about to board the plane that would bring him back to his homeland.
After two years in Brazil, Hinata Shoyo was finally coming home. The goofball had kept his promise: Hinata was going to come back and beat him, Kageyama knew it.
Soon, Hinata was going to win.
And that was enough to break Kageyama Tobio's unwavering concentration. It's not like he was going to wait for his friend at the airport, or that the ten kilometers that now separated him from his former partner would make a difference compared to the thousands that were there the day before...
But, well, for Kageyama, knowing Hinata Shoyo was in Japan changed everything.
"How are you today, Kageyama? You don't quite seem yourself."
Nicollas Romero's voice reached Kageyama, who looked up abruptly. The setter threw his phone in the bottom of his bag as quickly as if the object had burned his fingertips.
At the same moment, Kageyama felt a firm hand on his right shoulder. He didn't have time to see the gesture Wakatoshi Ushijima made to their wing spiker, but the family man nodded solemnly and joined the others, without casting another glance at Kageyama and his broad teammate. Even Kageyama, at 188 cm tall, seemed frail next to his particularly taciturn fellow player.
Ushijima and Kageyama had naturally developed a peculiar friendship since joining the Adlers. Both men of few words, it felt natural to support each other. They often shared the same hotel room and sat together on the bus without feeling the need to engage in conversation if they didn't want to. Frequently, they stayed back after practice for a few more passes, had breakfast together in the mornings, and even watched a few games together in the evenings to study the strengths and weaknesses of their future opponents.
But never, not once, had the men confided in each other. Kageyama had no idea what could be going on in Ushijima's personal life and the reverse greatly comforted him. Kageyama had always preferred to keep his feelings inside, buried deep, as he had done since childhood. Even though one night, two years ago now, he bitterly regretted it...
So it was quite a surprise to him when he heard his teammate's hoarse voice whisper, "Hinata, he's coming back today, right? I saw his story."
Kageyama's eyes betrayed his surprise. His eyebrows raised. His heart started beating faster. Just hearing the name of his former partner could provoke a physical reaction beyond his control.
Under Ushijima's persistent gaze, Kageyama nodded.
"Aren't you going to pick him up at the airport? You two were so close, you could have asked for time off. I think we're the only ones who haven't done it yet," the former Shiratorizawa Academy player commented discreetly.
"I don't think he would want to see me there."
Kageyama suppressed a grimace, which could easily turn into sobs if he started to dwell on the pain of those words. It was the truth and the reason why he remained seated at practice, even on the day his former best friend was finally coming home.
It was all his fault—the silence, the avoidance, the shame.
Remorse was about to destroy his semblance of self-control that he had managed to project since the beginning of this fateful day. He despised the sensation welling up within him today, as if his guilt had woven roots, spreading and anchoring themselves in his flesh with each breath he took.
It hurt. It hurt so much.
He had dreaded this day since the day Hinata left him to embark on a stupid plane, the day Kageyama had ruined everything. Even now, he could vividly recall the scene as if it had happened only yesterday.
The light from his phone suddenly illuminated the bottom of his bag, and the setter couldn't resist the urge to see who was contacting him, because there was a chance, a slim chance certainly, but a chance...
He groaned when he saw who the message was from. He used to see this sender a lot when he was his vice captain.
Yamaguchi - Best Captain in the Whole World
(His former captain was the one who entered his name in Kageyama's phone)
We're leaving in a few minutes. Hinata should arrive around 5 p.m. You can still join us if you want. I'm sure he'd want you there.
That was the issue at hand. Everyone thought they knew everything about Kageyama and Hinata, and they were wrong. Completely.
Kageyama – Too cool for school
(Again, Yamaguchi’s fault)
Too busy with training. Sorry.
And when Kageyama noticed that his outside hitter was still analyzing him with a strange look, he stood up abruptly, his expression even grimmer than usual.
Ushijima didn’t bother to add anything to the subject; instead, he squeezed his shoulder again before speaking,
"Come on then. The others are waiting for us."
His teammate led him towards the group and continued to cast anxious glances at Kageyama, who did his best to ignore them as best he could.
Soon, this day would end.
And maybe, soon, Kageyama would see Hinata again, after two years of almost complete silence, after a fateful night that had continued to haunt Kageyama's dreams and nightmares.
It was too much.
He sighed, and for the first time since joining the Adlers, the setter apologized and darted for the exit, before practice was over. Amidst the concerned stares of his teammates, he left the gym, opting to confront his pain in solitude, as was his custom.

A3! Troupe Event Translation - Journey to the Colours (7/11)
Tumblr media
*Please read disclaimer on blog
---
Kumon: … (Huh… I was supposed go to the riverside. I made my way all the way here without even realizing it…) The gate’s open…? (Maybe it’s because they’re doing renovations right now…) —.
Tumblr media
-pause-
Juza: …
Tenma: …He’s not answering.
Tumblr media
Izumi: It’s gotten this late and he hasn’t come home yet. I wonder if something happened.
Muku: I’m going to go look for him!
Kazunari: Mukkun. I’m going with you.
Misumi: Same here~!
Tenma: Then count me in too.
Yuki: We have no idea where to even search. This guy. I’m worried so I’ll tag along.
Tumblr media
Izumi: Everyone—.
Juza: I’ll keep lookin’ too.
Izumi: In that case, let me—.
Kazunari: Director-chan, Hyodle, you two wait at the dorm for when Kumopi gets back. It’s not safe for a lady to be out at this hour~. And Hyodle, you can welcome Kumopi home.
Izumi: Kazunari-kun…
Juza: …Okay. I’ll leave Kumon to you.
-pause-
Misumi: Kumon, where are you~?
Kazunari: Kumopi~!
Tumblr media
Tenma: Did you find him?
Muku: No…
Yuki: We’re just wasting time searching blindly.
Tenma: Where the heck did he go…
Muku: If only I had been a little more attentive to Kyu-chan…
Misumi: It’s not your fault, Muku~.
*ring, ring*
Muku: Ju-chan?
Tumblr media
Juza: “Have you found him?”
Muku: …No. We’ve searched all the nearby places that we thought Kumon might’ve gone to…
Izumi: “Azami-kun said he might have an idea of where Kumon-kun went.”
Tenma: Eh?
Azami: “I’m not sure… but have you taken a look at Tsuku High’s baseball field? He seemed pretty interested in the renovations goin’ on the other day…”
Kazunari: We haven’t tried Tsuku High’s sports field yet! We’ll head there now!
Izumi: “Be careful, okay?”
Misumi: If it’s Tsuku High, then leave it to me~!
Yuki: Oh right, you used to be a Tsuku High student.
Misumi: I haven’t been there much, but I know where that is~.
-pause-
Kumon: … (It’s been a while since I’ve stood in this field. This might be the first time since I quit the baseball team…) (It hasn’t changed since back then… I wonder if it’ll change after it’s been renovated.) (To think I used to feel so scared. But now I can stand here feeling calm as can be.) —. (A baseball… they forgot to put it away.)
Tumblr media
*flashback ends*
Kumon: …
Tumblr media
Yamaguchi: …What’re you doing squatting down over there?
Kumon: It’s just… we could’ve won today’s game for sure. If only I didn’t mess up in the bottom of the 7th inning…
Yamaguchi: That wasn’t your fault, y’know? Geez, don’t sweat it. —Here.
Kumon: What’s that…?
Yamaguchi: A fist bump. It’ll reset your mind.
Kumon: …Ahaha, what the heck. Does that actually work?
Yamaguchi: If it works as a trigger, then anything will do. It’s normal to regret things that have passed. We lost today. That’s not gonna change. It's not like it's going to change the outcome of the game, so if you have time to regret, then it's better to face forward towards what you can do from here on out.
Kumon: Face forward… I see… you’re right about that. Thanks, Yamaguchi. I feel better now! Next time I’m depressed, I’ll ask you again!
Yamaguchi: No way. You get depressed way too quickly. It’s a pain.
Kumon: Hey, why!
*flashback ends*
Kumon: (That’s right. Back then, right here—.)
Tumblr media
Misumi: There he is~!
Kumon: Sumi-san…?
Muku: We were so worried, Kyu-chan…!
Yuki: Good grief… what are you doing? You weren’t answering our messages.
Tumblr media
Kumon: Ah—Sorry, I had my notifications turned off.
Kazunari: So that’s the reason~?
Kumon: What are you guys doing here though?
Tenma: There happened to be a teacher around who remembered Misumi, so we got a permit to come inside.
Yuki: I don’t think he’s asking about the procedure we used.
Kazunari: Azamin told us you might be here since it looked like you were interested in the sports field. Kumopi, are you okay?
Tumblr media
Kumon: …I’m sorry for making you worry.
Yuki: I don’t know what’s bothering you, but you can’t keep brooding over it by yourself.
Muku: You don’t have to hold everything in, Kyu-chan.
Tenma: Sometimes it feels better to let it all out.
Misumi: If something is bugging you, then we can think about it together, okay~?
Kazunari: I’ll accept whatever it is you feel. That’s why I became your co-lead, y’know!
Kumon: You guys… thank you. (Yeah, that’s right. All of them are here for me.) (There’s no point regretting about the past. Instead, I’d like to cherish the present, and the future, that I’m facing with all of you.)
Tumblr media
Kumon: …The other day, I ran into a friend from my little league days. After that, I couldn’t stop thinking about the baseball team. Like what would’ve happened if I continued. Or if I could’ve also played in the intra-squad game with Yamaguchi and the rest of them. I wondered if I should’ve tried harder on the baseball team. Stuff like that—. I felt discouraged in junior high, but I joined the baseball team in high school thinking it would work out this time. And I met some good friends. Yamaguchi and I had amazing chemistry as a battery. I had my share of hard and painful times, including with my health. But I also had the same amount of fun. Baseball was everything to me back then. I honestly believed that I was going to play baseball forever. But now, I love Summer troupe even more than that. I love this theater company, and I want to continue doing my best as an actor. Yet, I really hated myself for thinking about the baseball team because it made me feel half-hearted.
Muku: So that’s what you were thinking…
Kumon: But, you know, the reason I could even wonder what it’d be like if I continued playing baseball is because I’ve been acting with all of you. If I hadn’t joined the theatre company, and if I hadn’t met Summer troupe, then I wouldn’t have gained confidence in myself. I never would’ve thought I’d be able to play baseball again… I realized that thanks to Muku. Yamaguchi also said this to me back when I was on the team. If I have time to regret what’s passed, then move forwards. And he’s right. I’m sorry for making you worry so much. I’ll be fine as long as I’m with all of you. Of course I love baseball and all my memories with the baseball club are important to me, and that’s not going to change. But now I’ve come to love acting and the theatre just as much, if not more than baseball—because I have all of you in Summer troupe!
Tumblr media
Kazunari: Kumopi… thank for you sharing with us. Kumopi, you can tell that you really cherished baseball and that you put lots of effort into it. So you don’t have to feel sorry about your feelings and for reminiscing about it. I’m sure you would’ve been the coolest ever if you kept playing. But I’m happy that you joined Summer troupe. I’m so glad that you’re here.
Muku: Kyu-chan, thank you for joining Summer troupe!
Yuki: Anyways, if that’s how you felt, then you should’ve told us sooner.
Tenma: There’s no way we’d get mad at you over something like that.
Kumon: Ehehe. I love you guys!
*rustling*
Muku: !?
Yuki: What’s that sound?
Tenma: Shouldn’t it be a construction worker?
Tumblr media
Yuki: They’re not going to be doing construction at this hour. That’d be a nuisance to the neighhourhood.
Kumon: There’s no one over there though…
Kazunari: Could it be~.
Misumi: A ghost~!?
Tenma: GYAHHH!
Tumblr media
*runs away*
Kazunari: Ah. Hold on, Tenten!
Kumon: Where are you going!?

Doctor Hanahaki - We hold back each other from falling in love. [7]
Doctor Hanahaki
Chapter 7
WC: 2653
Akaashi cannot get Bokuto off his mind, and makes a mistake he is not too sure he regrets.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47404093/chapters/139255612
~
The summer winds blow gently as Akaashi enters the clinic once again, immediately heading to work. Yamaguchi was having his surgery soon, and there was all the paperwork to fill out, not to mention Hanahajou forever on the rise again. The news kept questioning him about it, what to do about a disease so brutal, and Akaashi hated that all he could do was sit on the air and say he didn’t know.
“I don’t know,” he would explain to the anchor on the news in front of millions watching from home.  “There is not a cure yet, but we as a field and community are committed to preventing the spread and impact of Hanahajou.” Always an I don’t know, I’m not sure, and it killed him.
It’s hard to be a respected figure when the only thing they say nowadays are the questions the public has for him.
“Your surgery was approved; I have the date right here. We can call this the quick consultation pre-surgery,” Akaashi looked at the laptop, the digital mountain of paperwork for him to sign for Yamaguchi. “I’m sorry it’s shorter notice than I would’ve liked. If I’m honest, hospitals are a little overwhelmed right now.”
“That’s fine.”
Akaashi almost choked on his own spit when he heard the words. They were soft, frail, weak. This had been the first appointment with Yamaguchi in a while since there was no longer much to do for him. Less clinic visits, more hospital visits. It was a phase he did not enjoy the most about his job, though not by much. Akaashi was a general doctor, working at a clinic he helped to build from the ground up, he was not going to stay with his patients forever. The difference? Yamaguchi was his youngest patient in a while, and there was a reason Akaashi avoided pediatrics. Yamaguchi was barely an adult at all, and that haunted him.
Bokuto pops into his head, and Akaashi needs a distraction.
“So,” Akaashi closes his laptop. A part of him wants to understand, be more empathetic. “This guy, why don’t you talk a bit about him?”
What am I saying?
“What?” Yamaguchi raises an eyebrow, but his voice is already more alive than the rest of their appointment.
“It can help relieve the symptoms, if only temporarily,” Akaashi shrugs. There were brief studies on that, how being around their person and relishing in their bond could help with Hanahaki. After all, it’s that little bit of hope that counts.
Why does Bokuto look a little better when I stop by?
Another intrusive thought about Bokuto. Akaashi mentally curses at himself but brings his focus back to Yamaguchi. “Besides, everything is confidential.”
Yamaguchi looks away before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his cell phone, the lock screen a picture of a much healthier Yamaguchi stood with a blond male with glasses. “That’s him. Excuse my language, but it’s a shitty situation because as much as I feel like this… he’s also my best friend.”
In love with your best friend?
“He’s a little snarky, rough around the edges but it’s so nice to see him grow as a person. We’ve been through so much together, we played volleyball together in high school and we actually got pretty far in tournaments too. All those days and nights, day after day, week after week, there are so many memories I don’t want to forget. It’s not just him, it’s my whole life,” Yamaguchi looks away to stare at the window, a shell of the boy who walked into the clinic months ago. “It’s everything. For a long time, he was my everything but now… I really am putting all my memories on the table.”
Akaashi notices tears starting to fall, and he does not have the heart to simply sit. He cautiously lays a hand on Yamaguchi’s shoulder. “It’s not going to be everything. Just him. It’ll work and you’ll be okay.”
“I’ll get better, right?” Yamaguchi looked up, and Akaashi swore he was talking to a child. A small child, just like him. Young, unaware, scared. Unlike him, Yamaguchi had a chance to remember his life before Hanahaki. Akaashi got better, but never had the chance to remember.
“Of course,” Akaashi is foolish. These feelings he has make him lose his well-built barriers, and he knows it impacts the way he works if he is constantly trapped in his thoughts. “It’ll get better.”
Akaashi knows it is not getting better.
He rings the doorbell on Bokuto’s doorstep right after work, letting the summer wind blow between him and the bags of groceries. The doorbell is less for permission to be let in and more for an alert as Akaashi digs into his pocket for a key to Bokuto’s house.
He knew it wasn’t getting better, it wasn’t going to get better. Akaashi looked at the keychain with the key Bokuto had gifted him. A small owl hung with the rest of his keys, Bokuto had a matching one too. Small, simple, yet screaming Bokuto with personality but quietness. Akaashi unlocked the door and brought the bags of groceries into the kitchen. “Bokuto! I’m here!” He shouted through the house, empty and lifeless.
A door down one of the halls opened, and slowly, Bokuto poked his face out from the side of the hall, oxygen tubes hooked up to his face as he stood with a small but empty smile. “You know, you shouldn’t be standing up when you get your oxygen in. You’re supposed to be relaxed,” Akaashi commented, unloading the groceries, starting to put them away into the cupboards.
Bokuto rolled his eyes and rolled the oxygen tank with him as he entered the kitchen, pulling out a bar stool from the counter and sitting as he watched Akaashi put the groceries away. “It’s that athlete mentality. We go and go even when we’re supposed to stop. I sprained my ankle when I was like- 20. Adrenaline is a killer, I stayed on the court for the whole game and didn’t notice how terrible it felt till I was off. I was in crutches for a week, ‘Kaashi.”
“That’s why every reckless athlete needs their doctor, like me,” Akaashi joked, not catching the flush on Bokuto’s face until harsh flower-filled coughs filled the silence and bloody cherry blossoms covered the counter.
“I’m fine- just…”
“It’s okay to not be fine, you know?” Akaashi stopped and moved to Bokuto’s side, supporting him in the chair. “Let’s get you sitting down somewhere more comfortable,” he sighed, holding Bokuto by the waist as they made their way to the couch, Akaashi finding his eyes traveling to Bokuto’s face which was turned slightly away. They had shared moments like these more often than not, where Akaashi would help Bokuto after a harsh coughing fit but this time… was different.
Akaashi was staring, simply staring at Bokuto’s face. He had eyebags, a sunken face, pale skin, and his lips with a common frown. Despite the Hanahaki surrounding them, his lips were bright and soft. His cheeks were flushed (with fever, Akaashi assumes but it’s strange since Bokuto doesn’t feel feverish) and his eyes so dull but so deep Akaashi knows if he stares too long, he’ll surely get lost.
“Akaashi?”
Akaashi sets Bokuto down on the couch before sitting right beside him.
The two of them sit in silence, Bokuto closes his eyes as he tries to focus on his breathing. Akaashi stares the whole time, the intricate rise and steady fall of Bokuto’s chest. It’s quiet, calming, but fearful of the future they both know to be true. A quiet moment interrupted by the tears which fell down Bokuto’s face.
“Bokuto?”
He opens his eyes slowly, doing his best to glance away. It’s a look of shame, defeat, a look which doesn’t suit Bokuto one bit. “Can you put your hand here?” Bokuto slowly raises his left hand and presses it against his chest, near his heart. “I just need to be steady,” he whispers, his voice rattling with sadness as Akaashi follows the request without hesitation, a flutter in his heart as he makes contact. It’s not what he usually does with his patients to help them feel better, but it feels right. He was never taught to do this in medical school, but it feels like the right thing to do.
What else feels right?
Against his hand, Akaashi feels the steady rise and fall of Bokuto’s chest which sends sparks throughout his entire body. His hand is melting into Bokuto’s chest, and he never wants to let go. Akaashi uses his free hand to wipe the tears from Bokuto’s face, his hand caressing the side of Bokuto’s cheek. It’s a cautious travel of the hand as he moves up to run his fingers through Bokuto’s hair, soft without the gel his volleyball-era appearance is iconic for. Time slips away as Bokuto and Akaashi lock themselves in a stare, one neither wants to break away.
“I’m sorry, Akaashi,” Bokuto’s tears continue to pour as Akaashi watches in horror when he watches a small sharp bulge from his neck slowly appear. The thorns which make Hanahajou much more dangerous, the internal bleeding is bound to start soon. Panic settles but Akaashi knows he can’t allow it to show on his face. “I’m sorry I’m like this.”
“It’s not your fault that you’re sick,” Akaashi shakes his head, but he doesn’t back away. It’s dangerous, alluring, a feeling Bokuto knows all too well but one Akaashi never could imagine. “You shouldn’t blame yourself about-”
“Not that,” Bokuto interrupts, slowly bringing his right hand up to Akaashi’s chin beside him. He keeps his hand there, and Akaashi does not pull away. There are butterflies in his chest which scare him, but the comfort of Bokuto’s touch keeps him in place. Akaashi’s eyes travel from Bokuto’s loving gaze to the lips which sit idly beneath them.
Wait… loving?
In theory, that was not supposed to be possible. Akaashi Keiji, Hanahaki survivor since he was only 17, his love and passion for most of everything robbed away in exchange for a new chance of life, feeling loved? The warmth of his cheeks, the constant drumroll in his heart, is this the love his coworkers spoke of? This bubbly feeling in his chest, the draw to do something dangerous, something reckless that was truly wrong but felt so right; was this love? It’s impossible, he shouldn’t feel this way.
Then why does he?
Bokuto pulls him closer, Akaashi lets him.
Their foreheads are pressed together, noses nuzzling with each other and Akaashi can hardly keep his eyes open as his heart pounds in his chest. The summer wind right outside seems to stop, and the sun pauses its setting as Akaashi looks into Bokuto’s eyes. There are a million words they both want to say, a million questions to be asked, but the silence never breaks.
Akaashi did not believe himself as he leaned in to close the gap between them, and Bokuto lets him.
His only knowledge of kissing comes from the movies his friends would watch in high school, but Akaashi stays there for as long as he could. He feels Bokuto’s arms around him as he wraps his arms around his neck. Bokuto’s shaky breath is light against his skin, his Hanahaki seeming so distant. Akaashi feels as if he’s known Bokuto all his life, safe in his arms as he pulls away to catch a breath before leaning in again.
Pause.
Akaashi’s heart drops.
He looks at himself, almost on top of Bokuto. In front of him, Bokuto has a dazed and flushed expression, staring at Akaashi with eyes pleading for answers. Akaashi backs away more, Bokuto sitting up from his sinking position on the couch.
In front of him, his patient is staring at him for answers.
Akaashi had just kissed Bokuto, his friend and closest confidant.
Dr. Akaashi had just kissed Bokuto, his patient.
His breath picked up as he got up from the couch, backing away and pressing his back against the wall.
No, no, no, that can’t be what happened. Shit, no. No! No!
The moment swarms back to him, a quiet moment turning into pleasure, with his own patient out of everyone in the world. Akaashi was shaking, panicking, pacing back and forth knowing the worst of it wasn’t in the legalities, but rather in his own thoughts.
“Bokuto,” Akaashi turned around to face Bokuto as anxiety-filled tears threatened to overflow. He had just ruined his reputation as a doctor, they were surely going to strip him of his license, and he couldn’t live with that on his conscious if they kept it buried! He had broken the line of professionalism in the worst way possible. Buying his patients groceries and attending their funerals was fine, comforting his patients in their last moments was fine, knowing the feeling of being in their arms and the way their breathe felt against his skin was not fine but despite all that- “I’m sorry.”
He didn’t regret a single thing.
“Don’t apologize. It’s fine,” Bokuto responded, sighing heavily, and running his fingers through his hair in stress. Not his own stress, his stress for Akaashi.
“It’s not fine, Bokuto,” Akaashi jumps up, trying to keep his voice from trembling or falling too deeply into rage only directed at himself. “I took advantage of you. I’m going to lose your trust, not to mention my entire career. I’m so sorry, okay?” Akaashi is rambling, almost screaming.
“Akaashi, slow down for five minutes? You always overthink things,” Bokuto tries to get up, but his body does not allow him, bloody petals falling to the ground as he falls back into the couch. “I let it happen, I…”
Panic is surging through Akaashi’s entire body as he relives the moments again. Bokuto’s lips against his own, the euphoria as he finally kissed someone. He’s drowning in panic about the world, about the past and the future. He’s drowning so much in himself he does not hear Bokuto pleading for Akaashi to listen to him. He does not hear the I wanted it to happen, nor the It was you, Akaashi. It was always you. All he hears is Bokuto’s screams, all he sees are Bokuto’s tears.
“That kiss didn’t mean anything.”
Their argument is silenced within an instant, only broken by Bokuto’s gasps for air as more petals fall to the ground. An infinite flow of bloodied cherry blossoms fall, tears pouring down Bokuto’s face.
The worst part is Akaashi is unsure how much he meant those words.
Akaashi shakes his head, continuing to drown in his own thoughts. “No, Bokuto. Be quiet, please. Don’t talk anymore,” he takes a shaky breath as Akaashi rushes for the kitchen countertop to grab his keys. “I’m leaving, Bokuto. I’ll get you a different doctor, a better one.”
Bokuto shakes his head, reaching out for Akaashi. “No, Akaashi. Did you even hear anything I just said?” He didn’t. “I’m sorry I left you back then, but it’s different this time,” Bokuto is crying while Akaashi starts to exit the home. “Akaashi? Akaashi, don’t do this to me! Listen, please!”
Akaashi closes the door and runs to his car. He doesn’t bother to put on his seat belt and a part of him hopes he does crash. He jams the keys in and intensely presses down against the gas, only having the energy to follow the stoplights and street rules. He drives and runs until he reaches the safety and solitude of his home, slamming the door and sliding to the ground. Nariko jumps from her spot on the couch to sit by Akaashi, no comfort to her owner at all. He’s overwhelmed so much that the last thing on his mind is the noise complaints he might receive.
Akaashi screams.

[eng] interview with Ono Yuki & Yamaguchi Tomohiro about Niki's Kitchen episode 15
please check the original article for lots of cute photos! Translation (interview portion only) below the cut:
Please share your impressions about the event.
Ono Yuki:
I really can't cook, so I was really worried about how it would go. In TsukiSta I take up more of an MC role where I focus on talking with the guests and trying to keep it entertaining overall, so this time since I get to be a guest I can do whatever I want! or something.  (lol)
So, that's why I think the one who had the most fun today was probably me. Right after filming, Tomo-kun said, "It was really fun, thank you very much," which I was glad to hear. I'd be happy if the audience had the same feeling.
Yamaguchi Tomohiro:
It was an incredible event (lol). The last release event was more about looking back on the show's episodes, but since this time was an open filming where I'd have to cook in front of an audience, 3 days before the real thing, it sank in that this would be really hard. But since the guest was Yuki-san, whom the audience knows very well, I also had a sense of reassurance.
But when I looked at Yuki-san during rehearsal I did wonder, "What is he going to be like during the real thing?" ...... and when we started, he was just like that (lol). While conversing skillfully, the way he moved the audience's heart and raised the energy in the room made me think, as expected of a veteran.
How was it to hold an event with an audience for the first time in a while?
Ono:
TsukiSta is a closed studio, and today I felt that being in front of an audience is great after all. Even though they couldn't raise their voices, I felt their enjoyment through their expressions and laughter. I was happy to spend that time together.
And the food was so delicious! I really wanted to eat everything, but with the flow of the event and the time limit.... (lol). I was really happy that the dish I helped with turned out so well. And there's the dish that Tomo-kun made for me. Everyone can enjoy both dishes at Cafe Cinnamon, so please go check them out.
What was challenging about today's filming?
Yamaguchi:
Ono Yuki (lol)! The most challenging, but also the most reliable, everything was Ono Yuki. No, honestly, I couldn't imagine how this event was going to go.... I hope that the audience enjoyed the experience of watching us live, but I realized how hard it is to do an open filming.
Nevertheless, I normally get overwhelmed with myself during filming, but today since I was so overwhelmed by my partner, there were no mistakes in the cooking. Amazing!
Is there anything you feel you left unfinished today or any regrets?
Ono:
The fact that I couldn't eat all of the food (lol). I wanted to clean my plate......!
Yamaguchi:
The fact that the audience who came to see us weren't able to raise their voices. "Cafe Cinnamon Niki's Kitchen Start!" "Yay!" I want to do that type of call and response. Instead of just having them just watch, I'd like to give them an experience where we do something together.
Including those who are starting a new chapter of their lives, please give a message to our readers.
Ono:
If you’re starting a new life, I recommend you learn how to make this galette because it will refresh your life (lol). Also, I talked about this in the recording, but when I was starting a new chapter of my life I had a crepe party with my friends. Get together with some close friends and eat crepes, and welcome your new life by making this galette!
Yamaguchi:
I've been working in this industry since I was a student, so I've never experienced something like a career change. Of course I'm working hard with a fresh feeling every day, and to make a new start at a turning point like this, I'll try my best this year too. When I talked to some of the people who came to the venue today, they told me things like, "I've graduated school," "I'm entering the workforce," "I'm going to start a new job," and so on, and I want to work hard along with everyone.
It might be a little overkill to call it emotional support, but I hope that Niki's Kitchen brings you joy, that yummy food cheers you up, and that it gives you energy for tomorrow. I'll continue to work hard, so please keep supporting the show!

Takada:And daishou was it tell shoyo to get better and we will miss seeing them around
The team:Wait you knew about shoyo being non binary and never told us
Takada:Its not my place now everyone offline and I mean everyone
Everyone: Hai
Chapter 5 Today Shoyo starts their new school with their brother and cousins they made sure to take Sho every class and made sure no one starts on them or they will be anwsering to the family Sho had a good day overall but they were looking forward to volleyball practice they watched the clock tick down the hours for volleyball Shot time skip to volleyball practice
Half said though suguru showed up at the gym and yelled “knock knock come to see how my baby is fitting in and settling” “Su I am fine I would be a lot more happy if these lot weren’t be on guard and act there ready to attack people like rabid attack dogs literally anyone tries to come near me to talk these idiots will start barking and Eita-Nii starts turning mother hen I thought I came to school to get away from that adverts I’ve got it here too”. Daishou was on the floor laughing his ass off at this point “sorry luv I’ve known your family from when we were kids I forget how Nutz they are at times” “I’m beginning to wonder if that was a compliment or a backhanded insult at me” “ it was a compliment babe I swear come on let’s play show me how good you got”
Like Sho daishou can play any Position so right now he is setting for sho to spike daishou sets the ball all falling toss and Sho darted gave it 100% the ball bounced off the wall and out the gym
“Wow babe was that your full power” “Yep I was at 100% but I think I can push past that” “Okay I‘ll set again show me I want to see a dent on the wall or the floor luv” “Bring it edgelord” “Edgelord should I feel flatter or insulted by that” “Both Suguru” “Yuiji-Nii you’re back how was your trip to Europe” “It was fine” “Your not allowed back are you” “Nope now set the ball for our Sho I can see him getting fidgety over there” “You going to tell me about it” “ were you going to tell me about Karasuno betraying sho and hurting them” “But look at them happy and they are more faster hang on Yo E set for Sho for a bit I am going to talk Yuiji” Semi worked with Sho because he knew they had a practice match against karasuno the next day
Chapter 6 Next day practice match Sho was starting out as a setter then they were making him switch as a junior Ace and take Ushijima spot while Sho and his family members were warming up Daishou quickly ran to them and said “Do your best out there love and make your old team look like idiots then dinner on me regardless weather you win or lose okay baby” “Okay thanks for the pep talk Suguru” “Love you baby have a good game” “Love you Su and I will”
Match start the captains greeted each other and it was karasuno up to serve which worked for Shiratorizawa Tendou received and passed it to his little brother who set it to ushijima who slammed it down Kageyama said “your a setter since when” “Didn’t you hear us say my brother can play any position that includes setter” Goshiki served noya received it went straight to Sho who did a setter dump right under kageyamas nose after making it look like he was going to set to Tendou and got salt boy out the way in the end shiratorizawa won the set it was time for Sho to switch position and ushijima went off not before saying “kick their asses out there Cousin” semi came in as the setter and the match started again karasuno served they thought Sho was still the setter Sho recieved and sent it semi sent it back to sho who used 100% power and they didn’t see the Ball coming or going “ what the hell was that” Asked Daichi “ we’re we holding him back this whole time” asked noya
“Finally someone gets it’s done you shouldn’t of sent it to my brother what you thought he was still playing setter no ushijima walked off they are their cousin’s junior ace that’s what they are playing wish you still had them don’t”
Daichi thoughts 💭 how does them know we still want them but we fucked up
In the end Shiratorizawa won straight sets
Daishou ran to Sho and kissed him “great job Hunny”
“Daichi: “that’s my boyfriend you’re kissing
Sho: no I’m not not anymore right here right now I am officially ending us I couldn’t end us in the karasuno group chat because someone kicked me out Babe let’s go after dinner want to study with me I can help you with math
Daishou: sure hunny and for the record daichi how can Sho be your boyfriend when they don’t have a gender stop trying to claim and label my life partner glady to see you have come to your senses babe
Sho: mum and dad are right we have to get married our business depends on it any way dinner and homework
Kageyama: when did you become smart Boke
Tsukki: always they always been smart when they were in karasuno you know their grades were 100% right
Kageyama: so why did he get held back that practice match
Yams: some bitch was trying to start something she was about to clam r@pe if me and Tsukki told the teacher that Sho do go for girls their gay and stop Misgendering them
Chapter 7
Teru:Also Suguru Sho is right you two need to get married the fate of all our businesses rest on you two
“Then I guess I should to this properly hun give me your ring our parents gave you” Shoyo handed over the ring he kept on a chain around his neck and Daishou got on one knee and said “ Tendou Shoyo will you be my life partner and marry me”
“Baka Suguru Baka of course at least I am marrying for love as well as business reasons”
“But your a first year” kageyama said “I thought setters were meant to be observant I am a second year kid I am coming up for my 3rd year your a 1st year me tsukki and yams will be in our final year” “the joys of being older shrimpy anyway don’t you have a homework and dinner date with your husband to be” “shit you right Su babe let’s go I’ll help you in your weak subjects” “It helps having a smart partner as a personal tutor” “For that smart mouth comment should I really help you”
Chapter 8 After the match Karasuno went home sour but also regretful they really did screw up daichi felt like he lost a part of him why did he have to say he was only using Hinata for his body daichi walked into the gym “anyone else feel disgusted and disappointed in themselves” everyone said yes daichi said “I feel revolted by myself and what I said”Kiyoko walked in and said you all woke up to yourselves and how disgusting you are glad Sho is away from this toxic team because of your behaviour you have given karasuno a foul name in other prefectures other teams don’t want to know you if that’s the way the crows treat teammates” “So you are saying we messed up that bad other teams don’t want to know us we are back to square one what if we make it up to sho” how do you plan to make it up to them you find every way to lower their self esteem and misgender them” “I don’t know maybe if we learn more about Non binary so we can avoid making the same mistake for future players joining the team
Chapter 9 Today was a weekend so Daishou decided he would take Sho out on a Date he had a rough idea what he wanted to do so he set some clothes out for sho and left a note
Hey baby i left you this outfit and breakfast I am taking you out of a this is the location just punch it into your phone GPS and I’ll see you there love your Sugu
He went down stairs and made sho some heart shaped pancakes and then left for the location Sho started to wake up he was hoping to get a hug but the bed felt cold he woke up completely and saw the outfit suguru picked out
Which was leggings one oh Daishou’s hoodies and and trainers he read the note and then ran downstairs to indeed find breakfast he then put in the coordinates daishou left him and took the car his brother gave him on his sweet 16
I drove to the location and found myself outside the gates of an amusement park I got out the car and went to find Suguru Before I could walk anymore I felt two sting hands wrap around me and a pair of lips on my neck “hey baby we have the whole park more or less to ourselves so today I am going to spoil you and treat you like a queen”
They had a great time and Suguru said “Sho I want to start planning our wedding but I want you to have a say and Unless you still have your future plans journal where you planned out how to want your future including your future wedding “
“Of course I still have it that journal was the biggest part of our childhood”
Chapter 10 I went to get my journal when I got home and we went though it “Su remember this one I said I was gonna get a horse and make it look a my little pony”
“And you did get a pony load knows you tried as well omg I just saw the next page I remember that Christ”
Sho turned over and there was plans for barbies wedding to action man “enlighten me why we planned a fucking dolls wedding” “I believe your exact words were I am practicing for our wedding” while going though the journal sho got a message from their old GC
The crows —their sunshine

All names mentioned: works for us
Daishou: And wherever Sho goes I go so yeah I will be going with them to Argentina
Kenma:see what you could of had karasuno expect you lost them when they went to my cousins school and faired a lot better

WHAT THEY THROW AT YOU DURING AN ARGUMENT
tw: implied violence, hurt/angst
Tumblr media
a remote; he purposely opened the television to deafen your voice from the kitchen. he had a rough day and the last thing he wanted was to hear you running your mouth. but the thing is, you had it rough too. and the fact that he just wasn't listening and the way he purposely opened the television further added insult to injury. so you shouted, more than you ever meant to. and in the heat of the moment, he throws the closest thing within his reach—and instantly regrets it.
aran, SUNA, terushima, tsukki, IWAIZUMI, semi, KYOTANI, daichi
a carton of milk; he sighs as he opens the refrigerator, trying so desperately to shut off your voice as he takes a drink for himself, anything to help him relax. but your rambling on about how he "came home late again" and how he "stopped talking to you" just keeps going on and on and he's just so tired, so fed up. and before he could even control himself, a carton of milk comes flying across the kitchen and just barely misses your arm. his eyes immediately hover to you in both concern and surprise, but the damage has already been done.
KAGEYAMA, tendou, SHIRABU, ennoshita, makki, yaku, sugawara, OSAMU, lev, FUTAKUCHI
nothing; it was infuriating and beyond insulting. you wanted to talk it out, you wanted to sit down with him and have a proper conversation, but what he's doing is nothing but shutting you out. he looks at you as if he's listening, he nods his head as if he understands, but everything coming from your mouth is immediately dismissed in his head, all done for the sake of finally calling it a night. and sometimes you wish he would scream back at you, throw something out of anger, curse you out even—just something. but no, he just sits there and takes it like he does every single night, and you just know that nothing will ever change.
KITA, kunimi, mattsun, AKAASHI, USHIJIMA, kenma, goshiki, aone, hirugami, komori
themselves; he knows why you're upset, he knows he's in the wrong, but right now he just can't take any more of you're talking. he's tired and he knows you are too. you've been arguing for hours on end and going around in unending circles. so with a defeated sigh, he pads over to you and engulfs you into a tight hug. you push him away knowing that this is just him pacifying you and nothing else, but he only pulls you in closer. he doesn't say anything, just stays there and lets you cry and punch his chest. he just can't deal with anything right now, but he hopes this makes things at least a little better.
hinata, BOKUTO, atsumu, tanaka, YAMAGUCHI, asahi, hoshiumi, koganegawa, nishinoya
their ring; it was just too much—you were too much. he sits on the couch, hands on his head trying so desperately not to lose his cool, but you're making it so hard for him not to. you talk and talk providing him with no chance to explain, not that he ever even tried to. and at that moment, he wanted nothing but quiet, wanted nothing but for you to just, go. so he stands and decides to give you what you want: his answer. his response to all your arguments and accusations—his ring and wedding band flying across the room. only, it wasn't really the answer he meant, but it was already far too late.
KUROO, OIKAWA, meian, washio, SAKUSA, gao, konoha

Time Off
Daichi x actor!m!manager!reader
You’d only cut down your appearance at practice by two days a week. You didn’t think they’d notice, with Kiyoko and Yachi handling the manager duties you usually took care of, you didn’t really expect them to. The first week, Noya and Tanaka made a big show at the start of practice that they couldn’t thrive without their god gracing them with his glory, but other than that no one really paid attention. Even if you felt like Daichi might’ve noticed you more than the others, fueled the small crush you may have had on the captain, you didn’t expect them to. You felt you were just kind of there sometimes, you never felt like you belonged with the managers or the players. And you didn’t regret taking the days off, you needed them for your own practice, but it did feel like it was harder to bridge whatever gap was building between you and the club. Except for a brief mention that you thought about trying out that you were sure they hadn’t listened to, you hadn’t even told any of them about what you were doing except the coach. Ukai just told the girls that you needed the days off, and Kiyoko agreed easily enough, not questioning what you were doing. It wasn’t until the practice days got more intense that the boys really said anything.
It had been two months, missing two days of practice a week, until this one. It was your fourth day absent, and even the players that didn’t voice their acknowledgment of your missing presence began to be wary. When Hinata had asked Daichi where you’d been, they were all shocked that he just shook his head and said he didn’t know. They turned to Kiyoko, but she offered a shrug in response, and then they were really lost. Yamaguchi seemed like the only one brave enough to ask the question they were all thinking, “Is L/N leaving us? Are they leaving the club?” Everyone was more bothered than they thought they’d be when they realized they had no idea. “Do we ask too much of him or something?” Practice that day was off, no one knew what to make of the tension in the air, and no one liked it. They all thought on Yamaguchi’s words. Sure, they asked a lot of you, even things outside of managerial duties, but you always did it with a smile on your face. Even taking some of Kiyoko and Yachi’s work throughout the week, never once complaining. Had they fucked up that badly? Daichi met with the team that night after practice, agreeing that they’d ask less of you from now on, to try and mend whatever they hurt between you.
You were rereading your lines in class the next day, only two weeks before opening night of the play. You finally found what you loved, and you managed to get the lead role, but you had no one you really craved to invite. Sure, you had some classmates you were friendly with, and there was the team, but none of them even asked you where’d you’d been when you would see them. It was almost like they went out of their way to avoid looking at you when you’d see them in the halls. It hurt more than you thought it would. All the times you’d calmed down Asahi, taped Tsukishima’s fingers, reeled in Noya and Tanaka, helped Kageyama and Hinata study, gave Daichi a pep talk when he questioned himself as captain, and it felt like it was all for nothing. But as much as you felt like they didn’t need you, you still cared. You had to visit the gym today, explain to Ukai and Takeda that you needed extra time off this week and next, and you were dreading it.
As soon as the last bell rang, you ran to the gym, hoping to be in and out before the boys finished changing.
“There’s the little star!” Ukai yelled out with a smirk on his face, “How’s everything going?”
You couldn’t help the smile that found it’s way to your face, even if you were still antsy as hell, “It’s- uh- it’s going really well actually. I needed to let you know that I won’t be back this week or next, but I can go back to my regular duties after that.”
“Take your time! I can’t wait to see you up there.”
“You’re…you’re coming?” You blinked up at him, surprised.
“Of course! Me and Specks are gonna be front row to watch you, little crow.” You laughed at the nickname for the teacher and yourself, a warm feeling buzzing inside you that you did have someone that noticed you. “I know you’ve got rehearsal today, so go on. Get outta here!” You were glad he sent you away then, not wanting him to see the tears that sprung to your eyes that he cared enough to want to see the show.
The third year members of the team had been approaching the doors when they heard the coach’s voice, “Get outta here!” And next thing they knew, you were running past them and wiping your eyes as you moved, like you hadn’t even noticed them. “Is that why L/N hasn’t been here?” Suga glanced at Daichi, “Does coach not like him?” Daichi looked shocked, he thought you would’ve told one of them if you were having trouble with their coach. You’d been their manager for almost two years now, he wasn’t sure how they were functioning without you. Sure, he knew Kiyoko and Yachi were capable, but that was different to having you there checking on everyone and making sure they were okay. And he realized he failed you, he never made sure you were okay.
Coach Ukai wasn’t sure what was going on with the third years. Even when he was aggressive in their training they showed him respect, but today even Asahi was glaring at him. He finally pulled them aside when a spike came awfully close to hitting Yachi, who happened to be standing beside him, “Alright, what the hell is going on with you three?”
“Why’d you kick L/N out?”
“Who- you mean little crow?” He laughed but it faded when he saw how serious they were, “You dumbasses really don’t know why he hasn’t been here, do you? Sawamura, I thought you checked in with your people!”
Daichi felt that wave of guilt again, and he hated it. He had always thought- hoped, really, that you were close enough to know if something was wrong, but clearly he was wrong. “We’ve been leaving him alone, I didn’t want to keep putting pressure on him when he needed a break from us.”
“A break from-“ Ukai sighed, muttering about needing a smoke, “Specks!”
“Uh, yes?” Takeda wandered over, unsure why he was being summoned.
“Little crow, don’t they come by every day to check on the team?”
“L/N? Yes, they ask for the notes every day to make sure everyone is performing well, and I’ve received three-“ ding- “I’m sorry, four messages to make sure everyone is staying hydrated.”
Ukai sighed, grabbing Takeda’s bag as the man protested, before pulling out a flyer, “Haven’t you boys seen these around school? I know most of you eat, sleep, and breathe volleyball, but come on!”
There it was in front of them, in black and white. The reason behind your absence. But why hadn’t you mentioned it?
Suddenly, everyone on the team was hearing their classmates talk about it. How hadn’t they noticed? It had been less than a day since they figured it out, and they were hearing everyone talk about how excited they were to see you. Kiyoko felt the worst. She knew you requested the days off, but she never thought to ask what you had going on. She had assumed it was personal, and now when she saw you in the halls she could see the look of hurt flash across your face before you covered it up. She witnessed how the brief look intensified when you saw Daichi, choosing to look away instead of cover it up. The team couldn’t figure out what to do to fix it. You were a second year, so most of the team barely saw you during the day, but Ennoshita told them that whenever you saw any of the players coming, you would occupy yourself or just go the other way so they couldn’t talk to you. Daichi finally decided he was going to talk to you when you stopped by Takeda’s office after practice to look at the notes.
When class got out that day, you let out a sigh of relief. You just needed to get through rehearsal, then you could get the notes and head home without the team looking at you with the pitying glances you’ve seen them sending you today. So you threw yourself into your acting, you knew you were good at it. No one in the drama club questioning if you were feeling okay because you mastered a happy face. As soon as you could, you ran to the teacher’s office, knocking on the door until you heard a voice calling you in. “Hey Sensei! I’m just here to check out the notes aga-“ the words died on your tongue as you stared at Daichi with wide eyes.
“Y/N, please don’t run away again.” Your heart hurt at the way his voice sounded like he was pleading. You couldn’t speak, too scared of what would come out, but also too afraid of he’d say. Were they finally kicking you out? Did they finally realize they didn’t need you? Couldn’t they have had someone else do it so you could hold on to the good memories you’d had with the captain? Your knees trembled a little bit, and you softly dropped into one of the chairs in front of the desk, staying silent. Daichi rubbed the back of his neck, trying to remember what he had planned to say, all he wanted was to make sure you knew they would support you- you, wait, why were you crying!? “Hey, hey, don’t cry!”
“Just tell me I’m out and get it over with!”
“Wh-What?”
“That’s why you’re here isn’t it?” You hardly registered the tears on your face as you watched them drop to your hands, “You guys finally got sick of having a guy manager, right? Realized you- realized you don’t actually need me? Just do it. I might be crying, but I promise I can deal with it.”
“No! We’d never kick you out! In fact,” he took a deep breath, “In fact, we miss you. I miss you. Practice isn’t the same without you there. We thought-“ he groaned, rubbing a hand down his face, “We thought you were just…taking a break from us. We thought we’d been putting too much on you, which is why most of we’re trying to give your space. But- but I mean if we had known you were afraid of that- if I had known, I-“ he wasn’t sure where he was going with this. He had never voiced his crush on you. Sure, Suga knew, and he was pretty sure Kiyoko knew, but he’d never actually said it. Would you really be the first person he told?
You wiped at your eyes, “If you guys don’t want me out, then why- why has everyone been avoiding me?”
“You were avoiding us!”
“I only started avoiding you guys today!” You argued back, “I couldn’t take the damn pitying looks. But for days, every time I saw one of you guys, you’d all look the other way and act like you didn’t notice me. My own classmates have been asking what I did to offend the entire team!”
Daichi felt that guilt again. That was his decision. “I told them to leave you alone.” He said quietly. “I didn’t want you to think we only talked to you because we needed your help, but any of those airheads will only talk volleyball with someone that understands it, so I told them not to say anything to you if they couldn’t talk about anything else. God, I’m a fucking idiot.”
You snorted, “Kind of. But it is a sweet gesture, trying to ease my load, or whatever you were aiming for.”
Daichi cracked the smallest of hopeful smiles hearing you laugh, “Now, answer my question. How come we didn’t know you were doing this?”
“I told the team I was trying out.” You admitted, that sad tone back in your voice, “But I guess they ignored me, or didn’t hear me, maybe? I don’t know. No one ever asked how it went, but there’s been flyers up for weeks.”
“I wish you had told me.” Daichi confessed, “I don’t look at the flyers around school because they’re usually just about study groups and stuff. Coach showed it to us though. Lead role during your first time?” He let out a low whistle, “Impressive.”
“Thanks.” You smiled, “So….you guys aren’t kicking me out?”
“Never. Poor Yachi has been panicking about what she did to upset you so much that you want to leave.”
“Aw! She’s such a sweetie. I don’t think she can offend anyone.”
The two of you were laughing together again. And while they may not be where Daichi wants you to be together, he’ll take what he can get.
The day of the play, you peeked out from behind the curtains, seeing Coach Ukai and Takeda sitting in the middle of the front row, just like he promised. But what caught you off guard, was seeing the entire volleyball team right behind them. Kiyoko saw you looking, nudging Daichi and pointing you out. The captain snapped his head over from where he was trying to separate Hinata and Kageyama, and he waved shyly as Suga moved between the first years. You were immensely more nervous than you had been. What if they hated it? Decided that you wasted your time off from the team? You took a deep breath, remembering all the times you’d helped Daichi through his similar fears before a game, and focused your energy on remembering all the rehearsals. This would be okay. Even if you screwed something up, it would be okay. You could always try again.
When the show ended, you almost burst into tears, seeing your teams standing as they cheered and clapped, yelling your name like you didn’t know they were there. Even Tsukishima had a smile as he clapped his hands. You got out of costume, heading out the door to meet only to run right into Daichi on the other side, “Oh, shit! Sorry!”
“No big,” he laughed, looking shyer than you’d ever seen him.
“You okay, Dai?”
He loved that you gave him a nickname. Most people didn’t care to, but you did. “Yeah, I was, uh,” he paused, taking a small bundle of wildflowers out from behind his back, “I know people usually do roses, but I remember you saying that they were your least favorite flower because of how commercialized they were and I- uh, fuck, well I had promised myself that if the show was good I’d ask you out to dinner. A…date.”
“Was it?” You asked quietly, smelling the flowers.
“Huh?”
“Was it good?” You prompted, nervous smile in place.
“No.” Your face dropped, “It was great.”
“You jerk!” You punched his shoulder, “So, are you gonna ask?”
“Y/N, the best actor I know, would you please go out with me?”
“Yes.” You grinned, kissing his cheek.
Maybe the team noticed you more than you thought.

Embarrassing moments
warnings. just for shits n giggles, 14+ readers preferably, mentions of vomit, poop, choking, etc.
Tumblr media
HINATA was extremely constipated and needed to use the bathroom quick. but there’s a long line to the mens bathroom (what’s the occasion anyway??) and he’s standing all the way at the back. poor hinata felt a fart coming so he just couldn’t... hold it in. mans SHARTED. shitted and farted at the same time. it stunk so bad that the guys in front of him said, “damn, you need the toilet more than me,” and let him cut in line.
USHIJIMA and tendou stopped to pet this dog during their walk. tendou’s conversing with the owner while toshi’s petting the dog. dog likes it, it’s all good. until... it got bored and decided that toshi’s butt smelled good. dog just wouldn’t stop sniffing his ass. “please, stop smelling me,” toshi says with desperation, which now catches the others’ attention. the owner has to pry their dog away from toshi’s ass cheeks, please. the awkward tension kinda dies down until tendou utters, “so, what’s your secret? what product are you using?”
YAMAGUCHI drank water in the middle of silent class reading. this boy started choking— and i mean choking on his water. you can hear his muffled coughs in the distance and when you turn around to look at him, his face is all red and his cheeks are puffy. none of his classmates say anything but you can practically feel second-hand embarrassment oozing around. the assistant teacher even has the audacity to say, “drink some water.”
KENMA’s calling this one his last try. he sticks his remaining coins into the slot and tries to get the brand new nintendo box thats in the machine. mf has been going at this for over twenty minutes now. his pouch is empty and there’s a crowd of kids waiting for him. no miracle happens in his last try (shit got stuck!!) so he has to move away only to watch in horror— as the kid after him manages to get it. you’re gonna have to hold kenma down before he hunts that kid with every bit of his soul.
DAICHI had a fat one coming in, that’s for sure. thought it was a free real estate just because everyone else in the camp seemed asleep. so he let that monster fart come out (even partly stuck out his thigh for better airway). whole team was awake in a matter of seconds. nishinoya’s jumped off his sleeping bag and asking everyone if they heard that “loud bang.” tanaka’s over here sniffing around because he knows that no one has got some kind of bomb that stinks.
SAKUSA’s not gonna admit to this one. but one time he opened a bathroom stall (it was unlocked) only to find that it was occupied. there are no words to accurately describe just how horried the sight was. sitting on the toilet was a man taking a shit, with his dick on full boner mode, staring back at sakusa. they only made eye contact for just 2 seconds but sakusa’s seen enough. he’s heard enough too, when said stranger asked him, “you wanna join me?”
ASAHI projectile vomited at the theaters. you should’ve known it was a bad idea to take him out to dinner before going to watch a scary movie. man had no courage to tell you he had an upset stomach nor tell you he’s not a fan of horror. it’s twenty minutes into the movie and he’s poking your arm— but you don’t notice because you’re too engrossed. another twenty minutes, and a jumpscare comes on. man beside you vomits like there’s no tomorrow. ya’ll spend the rest of the movie secretly trying to clean his throw-up.
TENDOU was watching anime in his dorm peacefully. until... the whole shiratorizawa team opened the door just in time for the show to switch up to an inappropriate scene. out of all the times they could’ve walked in, they really had to come when 2d clown man was moaning and fighting a kid? tendou scrambled to close his laptop but now he’s just staring back at his teammates; silent, except for the fact that his show is still playing and you can still hearing moaning in the background.
TSUKISHIMA turned his house upside down and still couldn’t find his glasses, nor his extra pair. he was about to leave bare eyed until his mom caught him and forced him to wear his sports glasses. yeah, the one with the whole strap and everything. mans looked like a fool coming to school with it on. people who didn’t know it was his sports glasses mistook it for swimming goggles. he’s so utterly humiliated now, he can’t even bite back when hinata or kageyama says something.
GOSHIKI... i don’t even know what to tell you. who let this kid go further into the lake by himself? it’s all fun and games for everyone until you hear an ear-defeaning shriek by your one and only goshiki. he’s yelling out, “help me! please! help!!” the lifeguards start kicking in and everyone’s trying to make way. is he drowning? is there something there? no for god’s sake. you find out he just made it 5 ft deep and happened to swim over a bunch of seaweed. never take him swimming again.
ATSUMU decided to check himself out using someone’s car window. he’s fixing his hair, picking at his teeth, and even checking to see if he has any boogers. all of a sudden the window rolls down and there’s a senior citizen staring back at him. “boy do you think my car is your mirror?” the man says in a gruffy voice. atsumu’s knees nearly buckle from how scary this man is and how embarrassed he is of all the four minutes he probably spent with this stranger.
SACHIRO’s job as a vet sometimes makes him do really questionable shit (from an outsider perspective). once he had to ejaculate someone’s dog in front of their owner. uh huh... jack them off, for the sole purpose of examining the dog’s semen. he’s never felt such a wave of regret wash through his body during that whole procedure. it didn’t help when the owner was looking at him mortified, nor the fact that it took such a long time.
OIKAWA does this thing were he shows up unexpectedly behind iwaizumi and slaps his ass. everytime he does it iwa always hits him back (but not the ass). today he learnt his lesson when he mistook a stranger for iwa and slapped the guys ass from the moon and back. when i tell you just how quick all the blood drained from oikawa’s body when the man turned around— you can hear a bag of chips fall at the other end of the aisle and it’s the iwa, who had to witness that whole ass-slap event.
ARAN is gonna knock the shit of the miya twins one day, he swears to god. they sent him a mysterious video during his morning walk, where he stopped at a busy street. it starts off quiet, so he goes to turn the volume up full blast. damn video suddenly started blaring ‘lick my pussy and my-’ please... he’s shaking. passerby’s are looking at him with distaste. aran’s now flushed from embarrassment and running towards the miya house. you can guess what happens next.
BOKUTO walked into the wrong house. spent a whole ten minutes rummaging around the kitchen because his friend said to “make yourself comfortable, i’ll be on my way.” little did this man know that there’s a whole family upstairs waiting for the cops to arrive because they think it’s a robbery. poor bokuto, dragged out of the house by some cops but had no idea what was going on. man was literally just vibing— thinking he was in his friends house.
OSAMU swore this size pants still fit him (hint: it doesn’t). he’s walking through the snack section of the store, lightly limping because damn his dick can’t breath. his truth is tested when he goes to pick something off the lowest shelf and his pants literally go, ‘let er rip.’ fabric tore, and what’s worse is that he was wearing onigiri undies. osamu goes to check if there’s anyone else in the aisle and there is— a group of underclassmen girls from his high school.
KUROO tried to make his chemistry presentation more interesting by putting in jokes. he thought they were funny; kenma even huffed a breath. kuroo’s at his third joke by now and literally no one has laughed. not a single one. except for kuroo himself, who’s awkwardly laughing in a dead-silent room. man was embarrassed. other people are getting second-hand embarrassment by the way they avoided eye contact with him. he vented to kenma later only for kenma to say, “it wasn’t funny. it was just stupid.” poor kuroo.
SUNA accidentally connected his bluetooth to the bus. you know, the one that drives all of inarizaki to their games. wanna guess what the fuck he might’ve been listening to? it’s porn. he’s watching porn in broad daylight. suna doesn’t realize what the issue is until he goes to turn up the volume and notices that the sound is off. he take his airpods off and that’s when he hears pure moaning sounds blaring inside the bus. everyone’s laughing— except for kita and their coach who’s still outside. mf calls himself lucky for that.

hi!! i was wondering if you could do kuroo, kenma, yamaguchi, nishinoya, and suna if they learn their s/o is relapsing into sh? if youre not comfy with this i completely understand, and i hope you have an amazing day/night <3
comforting their s/o over self-harm
Tumblr media
featuring: kuroo, kenma, yamaguchi, nishinoya and suna
content warning here as there are mentions of cutting, blood, depression and other themes surrounding mental illness. if you or a loved one is struggling, please refer to this resource which explains why self-harm occurs and alternative options. this writing does not serve to romanticize any of the above mentioned but i hope you find comfort from reading it <3
kuroo feels heartbroken seeing you in such a state of distress but he wants to be strong for you as it takes everything in him not to cry. he is probably the best at comforting people as he always knows what to say. he recognizes that this is not about him even though he wants to be selfish and tell you that he wouldn’t know what to do without you. he needs you to be strong and to fight this urge to hurt yourself but it’s okay if you’re neither of those at the present moment. time has a way of healing both physical and mental scars. he wants to be there with you through that time as you recover from this slip and remind you that you’re not too broken to fix. he’s someone who focuses on the present moment, helping you clean and wrap bandages over your wounds before making some tea and getting comfy with you in bed, reassuring you with all the steps you can take to make yourself feel better again.
kenma wants to be the best he can for you as you’ve given him so much and he feels like you deserve the same in return. learning about your struggles with depression and self-harm somewhat shocked him like why would someone as wonderful as you have to suffer through something so horrible? he didn’t know when he would see that side of you because as far as he knew, you were always happy or at least, looked that way. finding out that you had relapsed into self-harm one day had admittedly thrown him for a loop. he wasn’t prepared and was honestly in much distress himself when he walked into the bathroom to see such an awful scene. he tried to remain calm as he focused on cleaning and wrapping up your arm, washing the red stains away. being the blunt person he is, he had to ask why. his tears fell when you couldn’t answer him. “don’t worry, i’ll be here for you through all of it. we can find out together why you’re hurting so you can never feel that pain again.”
yamaguchi would openly cry when seeing you relapse and what you’ve done to yourself, the blood dripping down your arm as old scars revert back into fresh wounds. part of him is angry and frustrated that you would do this again but the other part, the majority, wants to gather you in his arms to shield you from whatever is haunting you, making you do this to yourself. he doesn’t say anything, afraid that his voice would be too loud and break the silence like a glass window. he simply helps you up and takes care of your injury before wrapping you up in a blanket. this is the part where he has to speak. he knows you’ve struggled before but it was before you were together and you promised you would be okay. you cried together about it and you finally spoke up about how you felt like a failure for breaking that promise. “p-please don’t say that,” he whispers, still sobbing. “you’re not a failure and never have been. we’ll work together to make you feel better again if that’s what it takes.”
nishinoya would not be the best at comforting you as he doesn’t understand why you would want to hurt yourself but he would at least try his best. his first question would be ‘why?’ and he regrets it immediately. he doesn’t want you to suffer and wishes he could just take it all away from you. if he could, he would bear the burden if it meant you were happy forever. he feels useless in this situation but he does what he can as he pulls you in his lap, wraps his arms around you and rocks you comfortingly back and forth. he whispers words of encouragement behind you, practically pleading for you to be okay. he wants to apologize for how oblivious he was to this event but he realizes that he needs to focus on you and your recovery from it. he plans to ask you what he can do to help later on when you’re more rested but he does his own research on how to be a good support system for you as you sleep beside him. he occasionally reaches over to rub your head or back, your soft breathing subsiding his tears.
suna isn’t the best with words and prefers to use actions to show his affections and comfort for you anyway. when he sees the fresh scars, you’re the one doing most of the talking or rather, apologizing for doing it and trying to hide it from him. it’s hard to read his expressions as he doesn’t have too many. you’re afraid of what he’ll do or say, fearing the absolute worst of him getting up and never seeing him again. instead, he simply takes your wrist gently in his hand, bringing it up to his lips, warmth pressing into your skin as he leaves little kisses. he then reveals that he’s known or at least, suspected it for a while but didn’t know how to bring it up. as much as you can get on his nerves sometimes, he nevers wants you to feel like this, like you’re not good enough or whatever the source of your depression. he tries to shower you with love and affirmations that you are enough, especially to him.

taking walks at two in the morning with DAICHI, walking through the fresh layer of snow together in the moonlight.
you and ASAHI knitting winter beanies together to wear when it’s too cold out.

slow dancing in the kitchen in the middle of the night with KIYOKO as it snows outside of the windows to slow christmas songs.

sitting outside with SUNA, watching the snow fall around you in the dark while sharing a knitted blanket to keep you both warm.
watching TERUSHIMA try to wrap the presents and waiting for him to give up and ask you to do it instead, tired of the tape sticking to his fingers and unsure of why the bows won’t stay in place.
IWAIZUMI buying you both matching outfits to wear on christmas, not forgetting the little santa hats.

っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ CHAPTER THREE: DINOSAUR BAND-AID っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ
Tsukishima Kei knew that he should have gone after you. Regret was eating him up like a monster who likes to feed on vulnerability to gain strength. It was difficult not to think about what he should have done during that time. The situation you are in now makes it easier to suffer from the consequences of what fear has brought everyone.
Now, looking at Yachi Hitoka running her hand along Yamaguchi Tadashi’s back as he pants from all the running while rambling on how he should’ve stopped Shinoya Haru from running outside the teacher’s room. Tears were already falling from the captain’s face as he overthinks the situation while blaming himself for letting it happen while the manager reassures him that everything will be alright. Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio were arguing by the window, pointing at the zombies eating people outside as the duo debated about the most effective way to survive. Coach Ukai Keishin bumped their foreheads together, stopping them from the bickering. He told them how killing zombies and running away from them were effective plans.
His thoughts were cut off when Takeda Ittetsu placed a hand on his shoulder, asking him with concern, “Are you alright?” The middle blocker shook his head, tongue poking the inside of his cheek in frustration.
“I should have done more for her to be here.” He admitted with honesty, removing his glasses and wiping them with the end of his black Karasuno jacket. “If I tried harder, she would have been safe.” The boy wore the black-rimmed glasses on his face, seeing his teacher nod at his words.
“L/N is with Shinoya at this moment, correct?” Takeda gave a reassuring smile, and when Tsukishima nodded in confirmation, making the older man say, “They’re both strong girls. They’ll find their way. You did what you thought was right. Everyone is scared, and no one blames you for it.” He was right. The cause of his hesitation was his fear. But he knew that it was still his fault because he could have run to you. He could have made sure you weren’t alone and that he was on your side.
Despite Takeda’s words, the latter was worried because of how his voice wavered when speaking to his student. He thought about the kids who went out of their grasp, within a second. If one of them was faster during that time, maybe things would have been different. The faculty advisor couldn’t blame Tsukishima for closing the door and not going after them, even though he wanted to.
The teacher had a slight idea of why you did that. Because of it, he felt a heavy burden laying on his shoulders for trusting her with a large responsibility. He hated himself for entrusting this to her, completely forgetting the fact that she was just a kid. Despite being seniors the age of seventeen to eighteen, he couldn’t help looking at all of them across the room, reminding himself how they were just children starting to become adults.
Ukai Keishin looked over to him with a similar expression on his face, with a cigarette between his lips. Takeda met his gaze, making his shoulders slump with little relief, knowing how he wasn’t alone in wanting to protect these kids with all they have. For now, the adults can only stare at the foolish bickering of the weird duo, the manager comforting the team captain and the middle blocker trying to control his expression to avoid people seeing his real emotion.
His real emotion of feeling dread at the fact on how he could let go of you so easily. Tsukishima Kei wished he was more like your best friend, who was brave to chase after you despite feeling scared of what was to come. Speaking of that, he turned to his childhood friend who was on the verge of screaming, crying, and rolling on the floor in panic. “Oi, Yamaguchi. If you keep panicking like that, how will we be able to come up with a plan to save those idiots?” Tsukishima isn’t good at providing comfort to other people, but luckily, his best friend knew where he was coming from.
“How will we be able to come up with a plan to save them?” The freckled boy asked in bewilderment as he pointed to Hinata and Kageyama arguing about zombies by the window. “We already have two idiots who lack a single brain cell between them. L/N and Haru have a brain cell that they share, but our freakish duo doesn’t have one. We’re clearly at a disadvantage.” Tsukishima took note of how he referred to Y/N’s best friend with her first name. His intuition was telling him how Yamaguchi still hasn’t told him the important announcement he was going to make in the cafeteria. Speaking of the freak duo, Tsukishima gave an obnoxious sigh watching them bicker by the window.
“Are you fucking stupid?” Kageyama pointed at the orange-haired boy, with a look of disbelief on his face before defending his stance, “The apocalypse started because some aliens gave it to us!” The setter remembered the times when Oikawa Tooru would talk about aliens and learned some concepts about them, in hopes of becoming the best setter just like him.
Hinata slapped his finger away from him, boastfully saying, “Aliens don’t exist, you idiot! Haven’t you watched zombie movies before? It always starts when a scientist accidentally spills something bad, making people act out and be zombies.” The boy watched too many movies to back up his statements. He reminisced the times when Natsu would tell him to change the channel because she was too scared. “It’s more believable because it’s scientific. Aliens are a myth!” It was a lie. Hinata believed in the existence of aliens. But he wanted to prolong the banter between them.
“What the hell do you know about science? You failed our science test multiple times.” The setter asked in disbelief after pointing out how the smaller boy didn’t do well on those exams. He hid his blush, remembering how he also slacked off on the subject, hoping that Hinata won’t point that out.
“Wow! You’re one to talk!” The orange-haired boy didn’t let it slide, using this as an opportunity to win the pointless argument. He saw how the boy’s cheeks started to redden, making him continue his words, “As if you did great in those tests, we took over the years.” He let out a breath of relief, thinking that he already won, but he was wrong. After knowing the blueberry boy for years, he knew better than to underestimate him.
Kageyama pointed to himself, as he defended his statement by saying, “I did better than you. I got 12/60 and you got 10/60.” He placed his hands on his waist, leaning down to mock his partner, “What? You’re too loyal to your jersey number to let it go?” Kageyama placed a finger under the boy’s chin, who was wearing an irritated expression as they met each other’s gaze.
“Let it go, my ass!” Hinata pointed at his bottom to further infuriate the other, before huffing with his arms crossed, “It’s my lucky number and it doesn’t have to do with my grades. You’re the one telling me to let it go.” He reciprocated the same expression Kageyama had earlier to mock him as well, “What? You turn into a Disney princess because you got tired, my King?” To his surprise, the setter only stared at him, crimson painting his cheeks.
Hinata nervously chuckled at the lack of response the setter was giving as he leaned back away from him, asking, “Are you too speechless, Weary-Yama?” The latter had a darker expression on his face, chin up challenging the orange-haired boy.
“Say that again.” His voice was more than enough to send shivers down Shoyo’s spine, but that didn’t mean he was going to succumb and get down on his knees right away.
Kageyama leaned into the shorter boy’s face making him stutter, “What?” Tobio’s actions were questionable to him. The last time he did something like this, it led to stained sheets and noises of pleasure bouncing off the walls of the setter’s room. “Call me your King again and see what happens.” Their foreheads were pressed together, tomato-colored faces having a staring battle to see who folds first.
Before Tsukishima could comment about the obvious sexual tension between the freak duo, a familiar figure caught his attention by the window. The action made the duo scream in shock as if they were in a horror house. Well, they are. Except, the horror house is larger and seemed to go beyond their school.
Shinoya Haru was hanging by the window, supporting herself with a belt on her waist while the belt was tied to a jump rope from above. The girl looked like she was re-creating a scene from Mission Impossible with how she was hanging. Literally.
“Hi, guys! Missed me?”
Her hand was turning white because of the grip she had on the jump rope, while the other was waving at them, accompanied by a large grin on her face. Coach Ukai opened the window and held out a hand, which she gladly took as she took a step on the desk inches away from the wall. Following the large man, was Takeda looking at the newcomer before telling Yachi to get a first aid kit, making her snap out of her thoughts and rush to get the bag.
Ukai untangled the belt which was on her waist, while Kageyama helped her by removing her backpack from her shoulders. The setter threw it towards Hinata, who caught it with his arms with ease as he gave him the middle finger while the other smirked. Haru snickered at the interaction before going back to where she came from, sticking her upper body outside the window to call the others out.
“Kuriko! It’s your turn!” As if on cue, Coach Ukai has tightened the knots of the belt and jump rope before throwing it out the opened two-panel window. The people in the room watch the long jump rope being pulled upward, with Haru facing the window, hands on her hips. Ukai cleared his throat, making the girl look in his direction with a nervous look on her face.
The man stared at her, blinking at the occurrence which had happened. Hinata and Kageyama’s banter wasn’t new. But to see a girl fall from a high place with tied jump ropes to make it seem like she was from an action movie is something you don’t see every day. Well, you don’t see zombies every day too.
So, maybe the thought of teenagers jumping from a window should be seen as normal when wanting to survive in this apocalypse. “Aren’t you going to explain the stunt you just pulled?” Her shaky chuckle meets the ears of everyone, turning herself to face the window again while bowing down in the direction of the window, “We shall wait for Master L/N to explain.” At those words, confusion was most evident in their faces except for Takeda whose face became pale at the realization, putting the puzzle pieces together. He shook his head, only to be amused at the expression of the tallest middle blocker, who was walking near the window.
Meanwhile, the boy stayed behind Haru feeling his blood rush all over his body. He wanted proof that you were alright. Tsukishima knew for a fact that he didn’t deserve a second chance in seeing you. Let alone be in the same room with you after what he did. You deserved more. Someone who was never willing to let you go no matter what the circumstances may be. To be more than strong and smart enough to find ways to get back to you. Yet, he stands there waiting for you to come back, even if you weren’t his.
A purple-haired girl entered everyone’s vision, with her hands tightly wrapped around the jump rope. Her shoulder-length hair was all over her face along with the short strands glued to her forehead with her sweat. Coach Ukai had no hesitation as he reached out his hand to her, guiding the girl inside as she discards the belt tied to her waist. Yachi recognized her immediately, making her way toward the younger girl with a concerned look on her face, “Hey, are you alright? Do you need help with anything?” The latter shook her head, removing her sling bag on her shoulder, and dropping it on the floor.
Tsukishima watched your best friend let her upper body out of the window to give a thumbs up, watching the rope being pulled upward. The boy knew it was selfish of him to think how you would be glad to be in his presence. If he could go back in time to rewind the past, he would have chased you. Despite not being a fast runner, he knew that if he tried, he might have had a chance. He shut his eyes in frustration, fist-clenching at his sides before inhaling to get himself together. A minute felt like an hour, waiting for you to come down.
And you did.
He saw how you fell quickly and dangerously, taking note of how the rope went lower than the others before you. Moving more quickly than his coach, he stepped onto the desk, hands immediately circling his waist.
You were closing your eyes during the fall. He looked at your uniform, a white long-sleeved blouse with a beige sweater vest over it. Red necktie around your neck, as there were also bloodstains all over some parts of your clothes. The blade of the ax was peeking out of the tote bag on your shoulder. Tsukishima took note of your missing blazer, knowing how much you sneeze when you’re cold.
Your head hit his chest while the both of you were standing on top of the desk. You were inside the room with him, with everyone. This made his heart flutter a little knowing how the people he cared about in school is in one room safe. For now. Knowing this, he ran his hand up from your waist up until to the back of your head, thankful for the gods giving you back to him.
Tsukishima let out a breath of relief, at the same time, you inhaled his scent, making you lean back and open your eyes. You met each other’s gazes, your expression in shock at the intimacy he initiated. He felt your palm on his chest pull away with a solemn grimace, but Kei placed your head on his chest again, not ready for you to see his eyes with a little flicker. With this, his shoulders slumped in ease, feeling you lean into his touch, reminding him that you were with him.
You pulled away from his embrace but before a word escaped your lips, you felt a harsh flick on your forehead, making you yelp loudly and glare at the culprit. “What the fuck is your problem?” Tsukishima’s eyes widened at your statement irritation obvious in his features, dropping your tote bag on the floor.
“My problem?” He pointed at himself than to you continuing, “You were supposed to be with me. But then, I look back to see you far away.” Goosebumps were running down your spine because of his words. You get where he was coming from. Your decision made Haru run outside the room, determined not to leave you alone in facing what you were dealing with.
But that doesn’t mean you’re going to tolerate his attitude as if you put his life in danger, “I’m here now and we’re all safe and well. Maybe not mentally, but we’re okay.” You look over to the other people in the room to avoid his gaze. He was about to bite back with your statement but was cut off by his best friend’s words.
Yamaguchi was sitting on one of the chairs, arms circled Haru’s waist as if he was not ready to let go of her, “Stop arguing, it’s not going to solve anything.” He buried his face on her torso while the girl was biting her lip at the affection, running her fingers through his green hair.
Tadashi pulled away when he heard her small wince, he gently took her hand in his, fingertips caressing the bruises she had, “You have bruises.” He took note while the girl looked away to avoid his expression, knowing how she might combust at the concern he was showing her. “Yachi, may you bring the first aid kit to us?” Haru thanked her past self for saving a country in her past life for getting this kind of treatment from her serious crush and happy crush.
“Sure thing!” Yachi happily skipped to where they were after speaking with Kuriko, who was now with Takeda. You couldn’t help but smile at the way Haru was giving you a discreet wink as you witnessed the Haru fan club before your eyes. Your smile soon dropped hearing Kageyama’s words meet your ears, making you turn your back to Tsukishima even more.
The clueless setter pointed at your hands, and you moved away from his gaze. “L/N, you have wounds.” This caught the attention of Hinata, scolding him for his mistake as he slapped his shoulder in the process, “Those aren’t wounds! It’s cut!” The duo glared at each other, making them start arguing for the nth time. While the bickering does not help, Tsukishima grabbed your elbow, sitting you down on a chair. You leaned into the back of the chair, sighing in relief at the soft cushion.
“Boys, stop it, Tsukishima’s helping her now. Arguing won’t do anything.” Coach Ukai separated the two lovers having their useless quarrel as if stopping them from showing their love language. At his words, the middle blocker took the first aid kit from Yachi’s hands. He grasped your wrist, going down on one knee before you as he started to disinfect the open cuts littered around your knuckles. There were also some on the back of your palm, making you wince as you scrunch your nose when the soft cotton meets the torn skin.
Your reaction made his thumb circle around your pulse, feeling him being gentler attending your severed hands. Tsukishima applied petroleum jelly on top of your cuts, deciding to cover them with green dinosaur band-aids, making you smile at the way he had to pick between the apatosaurus and tyrannosaurus before deciding to use the former. Despite the treatment he was giving you, there was a certain emotion emitting from him that you couldn’t put a finger on.
Thinking back, you were thankful that he didn’t follow you back then. Because if he did, Yamaguchi would have gone after him as well, making it more difficult to get through the horde of zombies as you went to the principal’s office. In doing so, he would’ve given you an earful for the stupid plan and asked an explanation on why is it so important to get there. He wouldn’t understand, and explaining it would be more difficult. You didn’t know what he was feeling right now, but you were thankful for him regardless. The fact that he was safe in this room while you were running and fighting for your life made the burden on your shoulders lighter. Because if he was there with you and something happened to him, you wouldn’t be able to forgive yourself.
After placing the last band-aid on your hand, he stood up without giving you a chance to say thank you. He placed the first aid kit on the table before going over to Nakamura Kuriko, who stopped speaking to Takeda when she noticed his figure. The height he had was probably intimidating her along with the monotonous stare he was giving her. Everyone’s conversations stopped to look at the interaction, seeing how the silence added to the tension in the room when these words left his mouth, “Who the hell are you?”
っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ FIRST YEAR っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ
“On a scale of one to ten, how confident are you in going to Nationals?” You placed a hand below your chin with your elbow on top of the desk as you looked at your seatmate, who took off his headphones to eye you carefully. Tsukishima had a deadpan expression before letting out a, “Why?” You shrugged, not moving an inch.
While you do so, he copied your position with his elbow on top of his desk and hand below his chin facing you as you say, “It’s a secret.” He rolled his eyes at your answer, before straightening up his back to get a book beneath his table. “You don’t know anything about volleyball, why do you suddenly care?” First of all, you thought of this as an opportunity to converse with him. However, based on his reaction, he’s making it very difficult.
You couldn’t tell him that. It would be so embarrassing. You huffed in annoyance, missing the corner of his lips turning upward. “Just tell me. I can’t tell you why because it’s confidential.” You crossed your arms over your chest before turning away from his direction to add, “You need to win.” This caught his attention, taking a glance at your figure, eyes darting back to his book to avoid getting caught.
“Why?” You swear to God he is like a child who keeps asking why as a response to everything. You knew he was doing it on purpose to piss you off so you gave him a sarcastic smile, “Because I say so.” You stuck your tongue out to annoy him before letting out a small giggle.
He scoffed at your response as if he wasn’t the one teasing you first, closing the book he had on his desk, making you turn your gaze back to him, “What if we don’t get into Nationals?” The truth was, you would still be proud of everyone for trying. Haru told you stories from Yamaguchi about how everyone was training, making you nod along and curious to see how they play.
You leaned back to the chair, with your eyes on the blackboard filled with mathematical equations. His eyes were still on you waiting for your answer as you say, “Then you don’t.” The words were simple and he knew there was more to it, he was just finding the right response for you to explain what you mean.
Tsukishima was staring at you for almost a minute, leading you to whip your head towards him with surprise. There was something on his gaze you couldn’t put your finger on, as you tilt your head to the side in question, “Why are you looking at me like that?” He finally moved his eyes in another direction, making you more confused with his actions.
“Are you going to watch?” His question made your insides tumbling, not knowing how to react and how to read his words. Do you need to watch it? Why would you need to? Will it make a difference? You turn your face away from him, making him see the back of your head to hide the redness of your cheeks. “If I’m going to watch, make sure to win. Or else I would have wasted money to get there.”
That was a lie. It wouldn’t be much of a waste because you would get to see him play actively. Tsukishima smirked as he let out a breathless chuckle, “Alright. When we play for championships, you better be there.” He scratched the back of his neck, waiting for your response only to be met with your mischievous expression.
You face him with a cheerful grin to tease him with your palms holding your cheeks, “Why? Are you going to win because I’m there? Am I your lucky charm so that you could win?” You attempted winking at him but it only embarrassed you further when you scrunched your nose. Kei looked away from you, adding to the mortified feeling at your actions.
“I only told you to watch. Don’t get any dumb ideas.” He had his hands covered to face, probably to hide his cringe at your attempt to wink at him. But you didn’t know was he was trying to not let you see the flustered expression he had because of how adorable you looked. “I didn’t say we were going to win, so don’t get your hopes up.” Not getting your hopes up. Yup, you were reminded of that every single day of your life. This is why it’s difficult for you to look forward to different things. The reason why you’re always taking more responsibilities was in hopes of finding a reason to get up every day. This is why it has been a little shocking for you to hear from Tsukishima about having a mindset of not winning.
You contemplated the next words that were about to leave your mouth before you ask, “Why do you think so?” He tapped his fingertips on his desking, thinking if he should share what was on his mind or not before deciding to let it out. “I’m not even sure if we will get to the point where you can watch us in the championships.” For him, it was nice sharing that sentiment with someone who has little to no knowledge about volleyball.
“What makes you say that? It hasn’t even happened yet?” Your words annoyed him because how you contradicted what he was believing in. It wasn’t like you knew what it feels like being in court yet it made him want to know about your perspective even more.
Tsukishima had his shoulders slumped, staring at your enlightened face as if you understood where he was coming from. He looked away from you for the nth time scoffing, “It’s hard to explain. Plus, we will be facing teams who are difficult to defeat before we could get there.” You agreed, but facing challenges is part of the process to get the result you want. That was what you wanted to say but you figured not to say it just yet since it’s probably what he would not like to hear.
“Don’t think like that.” You gave him a sincere smile but quickly shifted to a teasing one as you joked, “It gives me the impression that you don’t want to win.” Both of you snickered at one another before he shrugs.
The blonde leaned back to his chair, his head upward as he faces the ceiling, “I couldn’t care less. Plus who said I wanted to lose?” Tsukishima scoffs before leaning back to face your amused expression, “Just because I think the chances of going to Nationals are low. It doesn’t mean I don’t want it to happen.” You swear that his way of thinking is the cause of mixed signals. Regardless of that, you sort of understood where he was coming from.
But that doesn’t mean you aren’t going to use this chance to tease him about it, “That doesn’t make sense.” He rolled his eyes at your mocking face, deciding to reciprocate the same energy you gave him by stating, “Maybe because you’re too stupid to understand.” You squinted your eyes at him in annoyance by the way he insulted you.
“Asshole.” You muttered, loud enough for him to hear as he snickers at the way he got you all worked up. You rolled your eyes at him while using your finger to air quote what you were about to say, “Okay, Mr. Tsukishima I-can’t-communicate-properly-because-I-send-mixed-signals-to-everyone-and-gets-pissed-when-they-don’t-understand-me Kei.” The boy gave you a deadpan expression by the way you teased him as he turns away to look at the large window near him.
Unbeknown to you, he was holding back a small smile before he cleared his throat to remind you, “Just don’t forget what we talked about.” You talked about a lot of topics because you were getting carried away. Which part of the conversation was he referring to? Your question was answered by his next words, “Watch us get a spot in Nationals.” You bit the tip of your tongue to hold back a smile.
You placed your hand on his shoulder to make him look at you. “Alright.” His face held an expression, which is difficult to interpret because of how his dark brown eyes were meeting yours. “Just win, okay?” You removed your hand from him as you held both hands up while offering a sheepish grin, “Not that I don’t have faith in you since I’m already there as your good luck charm.” With that, you turned to your desk grabbing your clipboard and notebook, thinking it was the end of your conversation.
“What happens if we don’t win?” Tsukishima questioned you with doubt in his voice. You moved your head to look at him again as he continued, “Is it proof that you’re not my good luck charm?” This statement made you roll your eyes internally, knowing it was his way of disregarding the first question. You knew he regretted asking the first question with how he followed up with another as means to get you riled up.
You puffed your cheeks, holding back from giving a speech about how it’s valid to worry and to show vulnerability once in a while. You weren’t close with him yet which is why you settled with, “It’s alright.”
His silence made you look to the side to see that he was waiting for you to continue with the curious expression he had despite trying to hide it with his boredom. You let go of your pen on your desk to maintain eye contact with him as you smile, “You win or you lose? You’re still going to be my champion.” You blushed at the way you said the last part but then you shook your head as you move your head to look at your notebook again.
“The fact you did your best in those matches is more than good enough for me.” You clicked on the ballpen between your fingers, not wanting to see his expression before telling him truthfully, “As long as you enjoyed playing, you will still be able to keep moving forward despite not getting the result you wanted.” Your words struck him as if he was enlightened by the statement, however, he didn’t show it in his face and body expression.
Tsukishima straightens up scoffing at your words, “Who the hell is happy when they lose?” This made you stop writing in your notebook to glare at the blonde. You swear he is the most indecisive person to exist. First, he says he doesn’t care if they win or lose. Now, this? He was probably getting you riled up but the joke’s on him, you have a comeback for his absurd question.
You flicked his shoulder for him to place a hand on the spot you targeted as if it hurt, “Hey! Losing can have a lot of benefits too.” You pointed at the blackboard, thinking of an analogy before your eyes sparkled as an idea popped into your head. “For example, not getting picked by the teacher during surprise recitation. Do you think the ones who get picked are happy?” Your seatmate gave you a deadpan face at what you said.
Surprisingly, he recalled your earlier conversation before mocking you, “That doesn’t make sense.” It seems like the goddess of victory, Nike was on your side today since you remembered how to retaliate at the statement by using the same words he used earlier with a teasing smile, “Maybe because you’re too stupid to understand.” You turned your gaze back to your notebook as you continue writing the names of the absentees for the week. Half of you expected him to retort with a snarky remark but from your peripheral vision, you swore at the sight of Tsukishima not saying anything else with the small smile on his lips.
っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ FIRST YEAR, KARASUNO VERSUS SHIRATOWIZAWA っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ
“Bitch! You should have skipped classes with me. The match between Aoba Johsai and Karasuno was so intense. Yamaguchi was their pinch server and he fucking scored five consecutive points. I swear my heart just did a gymnastics routine with all the tumbling.” Haru jumped up and down to show her excitement as she suddenly waltzed inside your room. After hearing the news of how the team advanced to the next tournament, you were giddy during the remaining school hours.
When the team arrived at school, you remember letting your head out of the window to yell out congratulations to them, making eye contact with the blonde middle blocker. Tsukishima gave you a look as if to say, “I better see you tomorrow.” While you stuck out your tongue as if to retaliate with a “Just admit you want to see me, I’ll be there.” At that exact moment, Haru sent you a text that after talking to Yamaguchi, she immediately went straight home to get her things because she was coming over to yours for a sudden sleepover.
With face masks on, she hooked her arm around yours as you leaned in to listen to her ramble about how she learned the rules of volleyball through Hitoka Yachi and some other men who were friends with Karasuno’s coach. “I swear, Yachi is the smartest, she explained the rules in a way that it’s easier to understand, can you believe that?” You nodded along with her, knowing how you have interacted with the girl in the past regarding the English subject.
“By the way,” Haru looked at you as you try not to laugh at her appearance because how the white face mask on her face made her look like a ghost. “Have you told Tsukishima that we placed a bet and if Karasuno wins, we will be earning money?” You immediately shook your head at her question making her nod with you in affirmation, both of you mumbling “nice” in your breaths.
The door suddenly opened, making you jump and fall on your butt because of how Haru pushed you off the bed in surprise. It revealed your twenty-three-year-old sister, L/N Yujin, who cleared her throat with a mischievous look on her features. “Let’s go out tomorrow.” You squinted your eyes in suspicion because of her suggestion, as you and your best friend make eye contact before turning back to the older girl.
“Why? We already have plans.” At your words, your sister groaned childishly as she stomped her foot on the wooden floors. She hummed, tilting her head to ask, “Where are you planning to go? Do you have transportation? Do you have money? How far is it? Who will you be with? Ditch them and hang out with me. We’re going on an adventure.” Yujin rambled with her hand motions as if she was lecturing the both of you like a mother hen who watched her chickens drink alcohol and snort drugs.
You sighed, wanting to go on one of her adventures. The last time you spent time with her was a few months ago when you went wall-climbing with her as Haru tagged along last minute. But you already promised a certain French fry to watch his game so you answered her question one by one, “Sendai City Gymnasium. We will take a bus. Yes, but we plan to bring our water and snacks because we’re saving up. I don’t think it’s very far. I will be with Haru because we will be watching the volleyball match between Karasuno and Shiratorizawa. We would love to ditch and hang out but we placed a bet on who’ll win.” You let out a breath at the speed of your answers as if you answered the questions being asked in graded recitations. The saving up part was true but you didn’t bother to mention how you were going to use that money to pay up if you lost your bet. Yujin let out a long “oh” that lasted eight seconds before laughing hysterically.
“I was about to ask you to watch with me but oh well! I guess we’ll be going together after all.” She shrugged, making all of you excited as you went near each other to make a circle, jumping around. The reason why you’re mostly happy is that you didn’t have to worry much about feeling guilty for not spending time with your sister. Yujin has been carrying the family’s burden as the eldest child and you felt like she was the one raising you even when it was your parents’ responsibility to do so. With this said, you were more than glad that she will be able to come with both of you.
Despite that, you laid in bed with your best friend snuggling beside you, her forehead buried in your collarbone, soft snores escaping from her lips. You thought of why would your sister be interested in volleyball since the last time she mentioned the sport was during her third year when she met a second-year who confessed his love during her graduation.
The day of the match arrived, and you walked into the gymnasium filled with people, who were going to support their preferred school. Most of them were fans of Shiratowizawa since they were the strongest team ever since Ushijima Wakatoshi joined. Even the Great King, Oikawa Tooru, always had difficulty defeating him.
Yujin had her elbows resting on your and Haru’s shoulders, adding salt to the wound because of the difference in your heights. She gasped audibly, “Wow, the last time I was here was during my third year when I took pictures of the Little Giant.” The name reminded you of Hinata who cannot shut up about him, recalling how he wanted to be just like him, making him want to pursue volleyball.
“You’re old.” Haru snorted, making your older sister ruffle her hair as the younger groans, giving you a pitiful look at how you get treated this way every single day of your life. Yujin noticed this, as she smirked before making you her next victim as you feel her fingers messing up your hair.
After the torture, she hooked her arms with you and Haru as she looked like a single mother shopping with her teenagers. You arrived at the place a little later, making you a little disappointed at how you weren’t able to tease French fry before the match. All of you walked to the second floor to where the audience is supposed to be, your eyes were greeted by your classmates and people wearing orange robes to support the team.
The difference between you and Yujin is probably the level of confidence you show when interacting with people. As an introvert, you mostly demonstrate this kind of attitude towards people you are comfortable with. While your older sister could effortlessly communicate and get along with any type of person. This was evident in how she shamelessly approached the people in the first row. The man had black hair and glasses, while his companion had light brown hair, as they were wearing an orange and white robe accompanied by an orange ribbon tied to their forehead.
Your sister grinned at them waving at the men, before looking over the court and back to them, “Hello fellow supporters of Karasuno! How are the boys doing?” You and Haru made eye contact before deciding to ditch the older girl as she conversed with them as both of you went to Hitoka Yachi, who smiled at the both of you.
“Hello! Thanks for coming to support us. Yamaguchi was pumped up ever since Shinoya talked to him.” You immediately glared at your best friend who started whistling and gazing at the ceiling because how she forgot to tell you what happened between the two of them. Before you could reprimand her for missing out on an important detail, the manager continued speaking, “Even Tsukishima kept glancing at the stands as if he was waiting for someone, which was weird because he never does that before a game.” She shrugged, trying not to smile at the way you bit your inner cheek.
Looking over to the court, you can witness the pressure taking its effect on the boys because of how they were all over the place trying their best not to die on the spot. Before you could lock your eyes on the tall blonde wearing the number eleven jersey, you turned your head away. At the same moment, you saw a tall man with light blonde hair being pulled by a woman with short hair and bangs.
“I’m not anyone suspicious!” The man wearing shades and a white face mask defended himself, while the woman pulling him near your direction shook her head exclaiming, “I saw this suspicious guy wandering around.” The masked dude let out a hey in retaliation as the girl continued, “He ran when he saw me so I caught him! I thought he might be a Shiratorizawa spy.” Both of them made eye contact with Yujin, who has an amused expression on her face, making them bow down in respect as they greeted her.
You were confused as to why they bowed to your sister, who laughed as she walked near them to ruffle their hair, “It’s been so long since we saw each other, Tanaka and Tsukishima!” Your eyeballs almost ejected your eye socket in shock, realizing that they were the older siblings of the members of the Karasuno teams. Haru smacked your arm, upon realizing the same thing as you before snickering silently.
“What?!” Tanaka Saeko yelped in surprise, making Tsukishima Akiteru remove his shades and face mask to defend himself once more, “I’m a relative! I’m Tsukishima Kei’s older brother!” Yujin grinned when he revealed his face, basking in the familiarity and nostalgia as she remembered a core memory that involved him. She was in her third year while he was in his second year during that time.
“Tsukishima’s older brother?!” Almost everyone yells out in surprise before the man places his finger near his lips to quiet them down, “Shh! Shh! He told me not to come to the match.” After saying those words, Tsukishima Kei looked up to the stands, making his older brother sit down and cover his face in fear. This interaction made you laugh, at the difference in personalities as soon as you look back in court, your eyes met his making you wink at him successfully. Kei shook his head at your sudden confidence before turning away to smile before his expression hardens again to see Hinata teasing him.
Haru smirked at you before you smacked the side of her face as she giggled teasingly stating, “Those two are nothing alike, especially their personalities. I wonder who’s the adopted one between them.” Her words made you laugh out loud, getting the attention of the older people and making you stop as you bit your lip, feeling your best friend shake beside you in an attempt to stop giggling too.
The first match began with Ushijima Wakatoshi overwhelming Karasuno with his powerful spikes. It was obvious how difficult it was to face one of Japan’s top 3 spikers, making the difference in power evident. You listened to the conversation who seem to be volleyball experts, even Haru was making comments here and there because of the new knowledge she gained from Aoba Johsai’s match. In the end, Shiratorizawa won the set with twenty-five points compared to Karasuno’s sixteen.
Despite that, you weren’t nervous because how it was only the beginning. There were still four more sets to go to determine the winner. However, your best friend seemed to think differently. Haru pinched your arm to get your attention, making you curse at her as she said, “We’ll get our money, right?” Rolling your eyes at her words you patted her head with a mocking smile, “I thought you said you had faith in them. Don’t tell me you’re backing out now.” She agreed with you even with her doubtful expression, crossing her fingers to wish for the best result.
The second set started with Karasuno starting to catch up with the score. It was good since the gap wasn’t as large as before and it made you realize how good the team was with its offense as well. You notice how Tsukishima was touching the ball more often when he comes to block them. He hasn’t had the chance to block Ushijima just yet but you were certain that he was getting the hang of it. Knowing him, he must be coming up with a plan to solve the situation he was in.
You agree with his older brother’s words on how he bases his decisions on facts and what he sees rather than his intuition, which is in contrast with their opponent, Tendo Satori. The latter was known as the Guess Monster, who predicts the movements of the players to successfully block them and gain points. But seeing Tsukishima block him single-handedly made you bite your inner lower lip at the thought of your money not going to waste. But are you thinking about the bet or the fact of how attractive he looked when he gave his opponent a smirk?
When Yamaguchi was substituted to serve, you could feel your best friend shaking your arm at the excitement she felt. However, her shoulders suddenly slumped with her bottom lip sticking out when she witnessed Yamaguchi’s skill not being effective for the team. As the second set comes to an end, you didn’t know who would win considering both teams are unwilling to give up.
Using the synchronized attack, Tanaka Ryunosuke spiked the ball as Shiratorizawa’s libero failed to receive it, making Karasuno gain a point. Cheers filled the court and the stands as the score became thirty to twenty-nine. With this fact, the opposing team was pressured, especially when the orange team was persistent when it comes to winning. Not wanting the ball to fall on the court, the player wearing the number ten jersey of the purple team sets the ball to the powerful spiker. You thought that this will be the end since it would entail fighting back harder as it may be a chance for Shiratorizawa to gain a point. However, that thought faded quickly as the ball was blocked.
Tsukishima Kei single-handedly blocked Ushijima Wakatoshi’s spike, meaning that Karasuno has won this set.
You saw how he was fired up by the way he raised his hand and brought it to his side to cheer at the victory during the second set. This made everyone yell out in happiness at how the result of the match went since it was unexpected for the team to win. Before you could get a word out, your sister suddenly shook both your shoulders in excitement with your best friend dancing beside you excitement.
“Was number eleven your boyfriend?” She poked her finger on your cheek as Haru sang exile by Taylor Swift featuring Bon Iver, “I think I’ve seen this film before!” Yujin placed her hand on your best friend’s face to shut her up playfully. Your sister placed her arms around you, as she whispers, “You can tell me anything, okay?” You leaned into her touch, knowing how much you can trust her with anything.
She pulled away with a cheesy grin turning to look behind her to see Akiteru gazing at the interaction before turning away with a bashful face. You took this as an opportunity to tease her back as you whisper, “So, is the human version of a golden retriever your boyfriend? Is this why you came to watch? Were you hoping for a comeback?” At your words, she smacked your arm repeatedly while denying it as Haru grab your hands to ask what was happening so that she could tease the older girl as well.
During the third match, the tension between the middle blockers of the teams seem to be more evident as the opposing team became warier of Tsukishima and Hinata as they are not to be underestimated. The set ended quicker than expected. It seems like Shiratorizawa did everything they could and did not let an opportunity slip with how they blocked and get their spikes in. They were more motivated to do so since their coach was yelling their ear off at the mistakes they made.
However, the fourth set started with Karasuno on a roll with how Tsukishima was strategizing ways how to win. This was demonstrated by how his blocks and one-touches are contributing to the team with how it can open a chance for them to gain a point. Another is how their libero, Nishinoya Yuu was able to match with Ushijima Wakatoshi’s spikes, adding to the advantage Karasuno has in the meantime. Before the match could go any further, you felt a tap on your shoulder to see your best friend giving you a look.
You were confused about what she wanted to say through the face she made, making you lean towards her face for you to hear what she has to say, “I need to take a shit.” This made everything make sense as to why she wanted to be discreet about it as you nodded to support her. Both of you made your way through your seats saying excuse me before being stopped by your sister to ask you where were you going.
“We’re going to the bathroom because Haru-” you didn’t get to finish your sentence as you feel her intense glare that made you cough and continue, “-is going to do drugs.” Your words caught the attention of the people around you as Yujin gave you a deadpan expression, using it as an opportunity to grab your best friend by her arm to run off before she could ask any questions.
Both of you arrived at the bathroom, as soon as Haru went inside the cubicle, you leaned your back at the door breathless laughs escaped your lips. She huffed, cussing you out, “Drugs? Seriously? You could’ve said we’re going to buy some things but no! It had to be drugs.” You giggled at the way she narrated her part as the sound of her loud fart filled the bathroom.
You took the soap dispenser off the wall pushing it under the cubicle your best friend was in to hear her laugh at how the soap you gave her. Pinching your nose, you complained jokingly, “Which human did you have for dinner for your shit to smell this bad?” She scoffed at your words before answering your question with sarcasm, “Your mom.” If she wasn’t inside shitting her ass out, you would’ve smacked the back of her head but that didn’t stop you from cursing at her while laughing.
“Alright, I’m done.” You heard the toilet flush at her words and as soon as she stepped out of the toilet, you tickled the side of her neck as she ran away from you to go to the sink. Both of you sang your version of the happy birthday song while washing your hands before flicking the remaining water from your fingers at each other.
When you exited the women’s bathroom, you were greeted by the side profile of Tsukishima Kei, who was on his way somewhere you were not aware of. This made you let out a “WOAH!” in surprise which made him jump as your voice startled him before shooting you a glare. Haru stood beside you and questioned, “What the hell are you doing here? Did I shit for so long that the game ended?” After asking that, your gaze met Yujin, Yachi, Akiteru, and Kiyoko who were behind him while you see his hand which was bleeding and shaking from the pain.
“Dude! Are you okay? What happened there?” You pointed at his hand, making him turn away in embarrassment, you placed your hands on your hips deciding to tease him to lighten up the mood, “I took my eyes off from the match and now I see you getting injured? Does this mean that I am your good luck charm?” Everyone’s eyeballs were about to fall off their socket when they hear Kei genuinely laugh at your statement before shaking his head.
You didn’t know where your sudden confidence came from for you to say that but it seems to be effective. His reaction lessened your nervousness but his next words made you roll your eyes, “I guess you are sort of effective.” Whatever. Not wasting any time, you placed your hands on the back of his shoulders to push him towards the clinic while saying, “You better hurry your ass up and heal so that you can go back and win this thing!” Chuckles escaped from the lips of the people you were with.
Haru agreed with you as she helped you motivate him by saying, “The team requires brain cells.” All of you arrived on the doorstep of the infirmary. Tsukishima looked back at you with a face you couldn’t read making you jokingly bite your lower lip to give him the fuckboy face as he rolls his eyes. There was something about him you couldn’t put your finger on but that made you want to stay until he is alright. To be completely honest, your attention was mostly on him since he was the one you were slightly closer to compared to the other first years.
As soon as the door closed with Akiteru, Kiyoko, and Tsukishima inside, Yujin smacked you and Haru’s foreheads together, making Yachi yelp in surprise at the action. Your older sister scolds the both of you with her hands on her hips, “Drugs? Seriously? You could’ve just said one of you has to take a shit. You made me overthink over nothing!” Both you and your best friend rubbed your foreheads together in pain as you explained with a defensive look on your face, “Why would you overthink? Do you think we would have access to drugs? Are you nervous we would be looking at your stash? Jokes on you, there weren’t any drugs there, just love letters from a second-year secret admirer you received when you were a senior.” She gasped at your words, looking at the door of the infirmary before pulling your arm away from it.
“Hush! Forget about it or else you’ll be walking home after this match.” Yujin threatens the both of you, making you shrug as you think about how this could be an exercise and a chance to commute. You turn your head towards your best friend, only for your shoulders to slump in disappointment to see her flirting with Yachi, who was blushing as she was being complimented. You couldn’t blame Haru since the manager was really capable and responsible at the same time, similar to the third-year manager, Kiyoko Shimizu, whose beauty is out of this world.
After a few more minutes of chatting with each other, your older sister seemed to adopt the blonde girl as well, making you applaud at how good she was able to communicate with people and empathize with them. Before she could embarrass you and Haru any further Yachi, who seemed to be enjoying the interaction because of how her mind relaxed from the overthinking she has been doing. The door of the infirmary opened to see the Tsukishima brothers exit along with Kiyoko.
You immediately went to your blonde seatmate who wore a calculating expression on his face, your gaze went to his injured hand, which was already wrapped, seeing his pinky taped to his ring finger. Tsukishima seemed to notice your stare, giving you a smug look, “Aw, don’t worry lucky charm. I’ll still be able to play.” You rolled your eyes despite the feeling in your chest you ignored. It was probably the anger from his overconfidence but you decided to humble him by rummaging inside your bag to get a Peppa Pig-designed band-aid. You chose the green one with George’s dinosaur toy in it, opening it as you locked eyes with the Kei who held a look you didn’t want to decipher.
You wrapped your fingers around his wrist, pulling it gently towards you, as he complied without any remark to see what you were about to do. You carefully placed the band-aid on the back of his injured hand, over the bandages. Smiling at your creation, you took his silence as annoyance before laughing nervously, “This will be your added good luck. Now, go off and win the match you tall asshole.” Kei smirked, turning his back to you, to not let you see the slight redness of his cheeks. Kiyoko and Haru saw it though but decided not to say anything as they jogged forward with him, excited to see him back in action.
Akiteru stared at you in awe, shaking his head with a grin at the interaction he witnessed, along with Yachi who was trying to hide her giggles. With Tsukishima’s back turned on you, he stated confidently, “We’ll win. That’s a promise.” You grinned at how his mindset and attitude because in the end, he did keep his word.
っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ NOW っʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ
“Excuse me?” The second-year blinked in confusion with one fist clenching at the way he was speaking to her. You stood up from your seat to see where this was going while finding a way to interject. Tsukishima pushed his glasses to his face, speaking his thoughts out loud, “What makes you so important that the student council president prioritizes your life rather than hers?” Your heart started beating fast at his words before placing a hand on his chest to move him back from the younger girl, who looked like she wanted to strangle him.
His eyes met yours with an indignant expression, seeing you shake your head to make him stop but you knew he wasn’t going to. You and Haru owe Tsukishima and Yamaguchi an explanation after going off recklessly. You get where he was coming from but the intimidation tactic was not going to work in this situation, “If you want to know, ask nicely. Don’t blame this on her because the decision was on me.” It was not like Kuriko wanted you to go after her. She was perfectly capable of taking care of herself. But that didn’t mean you were on board with leaving her alone, especially during this time.
“You want to talk about blame?” He faces you this time, making you step back at the intensity of his stare. Tsukishima pointed at the door without leaving his eyes on you, “Yamaguchi and I watched the both of you slip through our fingers. Do you know how difficult it was for us to not run?” He remembered holding Yamaguchi back with his arms around him because of how dangerous it was. His best friend ranted continuously, regretting filling them for not being fast nor good enough to make sure you were safe.
Yet, they thought about their other teammates inside the room and decided not to risk it, hoping for the best. So now that the both of you were here with them, maybe this was the time to seize this opportunity on what was eating them up alive. Tadashi had his chin on top of Haru’s shoulder, who was sitting on his lap, as he told them what they felt, “Did know how scared we were? What if that was the last time, we saw you? What if the next time we see each other, you wouldn’t be like yourselves?” For someone good with words, you couldn’t think of the right thing to say after hearing his words. You saw how Haru shifted her position, moving Tadashi’s head to face her to lean her forehead to his.
Before anyone could utter another word, Kuriko did what she thought was the best course of action. She positioned herself to face Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, who were looking at her with curiosity before bowing at a 45-degree angle. This type of bow is usually done by a person to show respect to someone with a high status or to express a strong sense of guilt or apology. It is called a Saikeirei.
This is why they were taken aback by her action with how the dumbstruck expressions painted their faces. Kuriko shut her eyes in guilt, stating, “I apologize for endangering your girlfriends’ lives.” You choked on your spit. Tsukishima looked away. Yamaguchi’s palms started to sweat. Haru started whistling, staring at the ceiling. The others hid their snicker at the younger girl’s statement as the latter continued, “To be completely honest, I was already planning on jumping outside the window after killing the principal. However,” Her voice almost cracked but it didn’t at her next words.
“The door opened, and I thought maybe jumping out of the window was a bad idea.” She cleared her throat, as she stood up straight slightly regretting her choice of words, “I mean, we did jump out of the window to get here but it was done in a safely…… manner. But the point is,” Haru giggled, making Yamaguchi stare at her in disappointment while you suppressed a smile forming on your lips, feeling Tsukishima do the same to you.
“I never wanted them to save me because I already have a plan. But,” Kuriko made eye contact with you with a smile, accompanied by her slightly glossy eyes. Before you notice it, she turned her gaze towards Haru saying, “I’m so thankful that they did and now, I owe my life to them.” Their hearts were moved as if they were hit by a truck as they flew from the impact, landing on a huge cushion made out of cotton candy.
Tsukishima felt a sense of guilt for what he did. The truth was, he just wanted to know what was going on because nobody liked being left out. Now that they were in an apocalypse, it was best to know the truth to gain trust. In doing so, it might make the whole journey more bearable, as you have a group of people you could count on. Speaking of trust, he knew that he was in the wrong for suddenly blowing off like that. His feelings were valid, of course. But the approach he took makes you want to kick his ass.
Now, he knows how important the young girl means to you, justifying your reckless actions. You always give value to the people who rely on you, making sure you never disappoint them as much as possible. Knowing this, he turned to Kuriko, who still was apprehensive about his presence and intimidating aura, before clearing his throat and mumbling, “I’m sorry. We just needed to know.” She breathed out a sigh of relief, not expecting those words to come out of his mouth. You hid a smile, knowing how much Kei has a hard time apologizing to other people but found the courage to do so.
“It’s alright! I mean,” The second-year shook her hands in front of her in an attempt to ensure that it was alright and she was just frightened at first. Now, she understood why he did that which led her to say with a hand behind her neck, a cheeky expression on her face, “If my girlfriend suddenly ran off like that, I would have wanted to know why she did that too.” With those words, Hinata suddenly breaks out into uncontrollable laughter with a hand on his stomach. The setter beside him faced the window, not to show his smile, controlling himself not to tease his teammates.
You took a few steps forward to place a hand on Kuriko’s shoulder, who looked at you with obliviousness, “Uhm,” You felt Tsukishima move away from you to berate the weird duo, smacking them with his insults. Gulping as you let out a nervous chuckle, “We’re not together, Nakamura.” Haru let out a cough, loud enough for the people to hear, “Not yet.” Before she nuzzled her nose into the crock of Tadashi’s neck whispering something that made his face lit up, accompanied by his smile that almost reached his eyes.
“But that doesn’t mean both of you get off the hook.” Takeda suddenly spoke up, making everyone freeze at the seriousness of their teacher’s voice. Goosebumps started to rise from your spine to the back of your neck, as you make eye contact with him. “Next time, don’t do anything that stupid. You ran off empty-handed!” He had his arms crossed in front of your chest, making you tilt your head in confusion.
You remembered running off to get a weapon, making you not empty-handed, “Sir, I had a weapon with me during that time.” Takeda shook his head, only to turn his gaze at Haru, who was looking at the ceiling for entertainment to avoid him. You shrugged, knowing where he came from but insisted, “I don’t regret saving Kuriko. But I apologize for worrying everyone.”
“Same! Love you OG bestie and new bestie!”
Your best friend put two thumbs up, before putting them down to hold Yamaguchi’s hands as his arms circled her waist. Kuriko nodded with a neutral expression, giving a finger heart, “I wouldn’t mind dying earlier, but thanks.”
“I can’t believe I would still be alive after seeing Salty-Shima apologize and worried openly.” Hinata barked out, earning a smack on the head from the tall blonde to shut him up. He cleared his throat with a hand on the back of his neck with a sheepish smile, “Now that everything is forgiven and all, can I ask why L/N and Shinoya went after you in a middle of a zombie apocalypse?”
Kageyama nodded, as he agreed with his partner, “Are you the cure?” He pointed out to Kuriko with awe on his face while the younger girl stared at him blankly as if to think if he was fucking serious.
“I have a guess.” Yachi raised her hand, who was seated near Yamaguchi and Shinoya. Everyone looked at her, as she cleared her throat, “Is this related to the Shiba case?”  At the mention of the forbidden name, you, Takeda, Ukai, and Kuriko froze. Well, the case was supposed to be confidential but you figured your teacher wouldn’t be able to hold himself back from hiding this from his boyfriend.
Hinata looked confused with his mouth agape as he stutters, “Which one? There are two of them. Akeno, the tall goal-keeper slash L/N’s prom date, or Kenjiro, the weird one with glasses and bad personality?” At the mention of your name, the orange-haired boy noticed how Tsukishima’s figure was tense. But when you turned in their direction, the blonde immediately dropped his shoulders.
You feel Tsukishima’s gaze on you, making you hide your emotions even more, “They’re both assholes anyway so it doesn’t matter.” You cursed in a low volume at the crack of your voice in the end. With that, you turned away to face Yachi, who had a deep expression on her face.
“You’re right. Even Kenjiro’s personality is shittier than yours, Kageyama.” Hinata agreed but was met with a smack behind his head, making him fight the blueberry-haired boy. The latter had his hand on the smaller boy’s lips to shut him up, looking over to you in question, “I don’t get it. I thought Akeno was incredible, just like his height. Plus, you were his prom date.” He felt the other boy’s tongue licking his palm, making him pull away in disgust.
A few moments of silence filled the room, as they waited for your answer. You visibly gulped at the attention but for someone who is used to public speaking, you couldn’t find the right words to say because of how sensitive the topic was. You didn’t even know where to begin your story since they knew you were good friends with him. Everybody just assumed you didn’t hang out as much as you used to because he was busy with soccer while you were busy in student council. Nobody knew the truth as to why you chose not to be in his presence, except for someone.
Suddenly, Haru stood up from Yamaguchi’s lap and started beatboxing with a fist near her mouth, pretending it was her microphone. The beats she was making were familiar, which is why it was difficult not to smile as she sang, “Shimmy, shimmy ko ko bop. I think I like it. The tension is down, down, don’t be ashamed.” The song was entitled Ko Ko Bop sung by a K-POP group called EXO. It was what the both of you sang while crying because of how your grades were going down, down as well.
Hinata joined her in singing and dancing to lighten up the mood, making the others laugh and shake their heads, knowing how the topic must be dropped. Yachi clapped her hands before beaming up to catch everyone’s attention while the sunshine duo continued dancing as they paid attention to the blonde, “L/N, did you draw this blueprint?” She lifted the poster from the tote bag you carried earlier, making the sunshine duo gasp in shock.
“You drew on Red Velvet’s limited poster?” The orange-haired boy placed a hand on his chest while your best friend pointed at you accusingly, “I thought it was a huge blank paper or something! Why didn’t you tell me? This is betrayal! Shame! Pain!” Your lips were pressed in a thin line at their dramatic antics before helping Yachi and Kuriko lay the blueprint across the table with Takeda and Ukai looking over at it.
Their coach scanned the drawing as his fingers grasped the map, “Takeda was right when he said you’re intelligent.” Your face burned at the validation, bowing in thanks before saying, “May I share the plans I have in mind? And if it’s alright, may everyone share their thoughts on the plan to improve on it or if they have any suggestions?” All of them nodded at your words, while the others came closer to hear what you were about to say.
You took this as a cue to continue, making you grab a pencil nearby before pointing to where you are on the map, “Since we are on the third floor, I was thinking we could go to the music room since there are speakers there. As far as I know, the large speaker was a Bluetooth one which is why we would be able to control it as long as we are in the next room.” You drew a small box to where the music room was and labeled it as speaker.
“However, before we could get into the music room, we would be going through the clinic first since it is directly below this room,” You pointed at how the teacher’s room is below the clinic, while beside it is the music room. Your pencil went back to where everyone was to show another, “Beside the teacher’s room, is the storage room, wherein there will be more than enough supplies which may be useful such as canned food, drinks, etc. Those arrived earlier and it was supposed to be used for our Legacy.” You moved your pencil to the next room beside the storage room, which would be the clinic.
Therefore, if you were to visualize it, think of it this way: below the teacher’s room is the clinic and beside it is the music room while beside the teacher’s room is the storage room. You cleared your throat as ideas were pouring into your head all at the same time making you ramble, “I was thinking of dividing groups but I don’t think it will be possible since we need to make the music room a priority so that we could create sound to distract the zombies.”
You hummed to process what you were about to say before pointing out another fact, “Before that, we must have a way on how we could get down the second floor to the clinic and music room.” You twirled the pencil between your fingers before adding, “As well as how we will get across the art room to get to the storage room.” Kuriko removed herself from the circle, grabbing the bag she carried earlier to pull out three seven feet jump ropes, placing it on top of the blueprint.
“So, Uhm, that’s it.” Your hand went to the back of your neck, scanning the expressions of the people around you. Some of them nodded along and hummed, thinking about what they should say. Yachi raised her hand to suggest an idea as everyone looked at her when she spoke, “I think we should look for items here in the room which may be useful. For example, we would need a cellphone with music in it to connect it with the speaker.” Everyone agreed with her, as each individual went around the room to look for useful supplies.
That was step one of the plan. You’re sure that the others will be able to suggest more as they scan the room for items that may be beneficial in the overall plan. Before one of you speaks again, the speaker from above starts to give out a static noise. It seems like someone from the AV club was using it since the PA system in the principal’s office was busted when you looked through it earlier. You turn your head towards it, along with the people in the room, only for goosebumps to travel back your spine in fear as you hear the familiar voice behind it.
“Hello. My name is Shiba Akeno, the captain and goalkeeper of Karasuno’s soccer team. I am a third-year student, who is about to give information about the zombies because of how-” His voice stopped as if he was contemplating to continue speaking, only for your hands to get colder by his next words.
“-It came from my family’s hospital.”

It has been two months since you and Tsukishima called it quits, and you’re doing great. Heck, you’re doing wonderful! You rented an apartment and you’re living much healthier than you were with Tsukishima. He was your everything, yet you were his nothing. You distinctly remember him snickering when you asked him are you guys still in love. Sure you don’t love him anymore, but he didn’t have to do that. You let out a joyful sigh as you put your drink back on the table and watched the gorgeous sunset.
It’s 2:34 am, and the tall blonde boy is at a bar with his best friend, regretting all his decisions. The past months were hell to him, and he certainly did not do well in volleyball and ended up being benched all season. He wondered where you were in the crowds because you’re always there, aren’t you? He searched in the seas of strangers, with none looking at him lovingly like you did. Soon, they even sent daggers and boo’s. The calm, collected, sarcastic man is losing his focus, and it’s not looking so good for him.
He took another shot, tears dry on his red cheeks. Yamaguchi was sitting beside him, unsure of what to do. Despite knowing him since elementary school, he had never seen Tsukishima breaking down into a mess like this. He was an empty shell with no soul, yet full of regrets. He regretted not kissing you goodbye more. He regretted not stopping you from leaving with all your things that day. He was shakily holding up his phone, showing the lock screen photo of you as he typed in his password drunkenly (it’s your birthday because it reminds him of that time you kissed him on the nose on your birthday). With his wallpaper now on full brightness, revealing a selfie you sent him on his birthday. With that, he downed another shot. Maybe that’s the reason why the drunk man showed up at your door at 4:16am.
“y/NnNNnnn…”
“Tsukishima we’re done. Go home.”
“Nuhh you LovE me.”
“I don’t anymore. We agreed on this, you being drunk won’t help.”
“Y/NnnnN-“
You pulled him in the house. Just a few hours on the couch, we can talk when he’s sober. You thought. As much as you hate the strong scent of alcohol on him, you hated being reported by neighbors more. You pulled him to your couch, motioning him to lay down.
“joiN mE Y/NnnnNN…”
“No Tsukishima we’ll talk in the morning.”
“BUt I MISs yoU a Lot.”
“I know you do, know go sleep.”
He pouted as you tuck him in, watching you leaving him again.
“Y/n dOn’t LEave me agAin…”
You turned back, looking at the broken figure. He was the man you loved, cherished, but what has gone wrong? You saw the dark bags below his eyes, the redness on his nose, and the tears forming again. He had been miserable, and honestly you don’t know why. Tsukishima had been absent in the relationship most of the time, acting cold hearted and ignorant as if you guys were just roommates.
“You hurt me, and I’m not letting you do it again.”
“I PRomiSe won’T DO AgaiN!”
Tsukishima had always been looking down at everyone, with his pride as his first priority at all times. You hesitated, giving him another glance. He’s low and desperate, finally setting you as his first priority at this moment. His pupils giving you his full attention, craving love and warmth from you once again. Not in a million years you thought you would see this man so messed up, but here you are.
“Let’s talk when you’re sober, ok? You can’t even think straight right now. Get some rest and we’ll hopefully find a solution for you.”
“I loVe you.”
You walked away, forcing yourself to not say it back. Yes, you have gotten over him, but him appearing again and giving you what you have been missing is changing your mind bit by bit.
Morning arrived, and you strolled to the living room and saw Tsukishima sitting up, most likely thinking.
“Hey.”
He turned to you. His eyes widening as he hesitantly walked to you, afraid that you’ll reject him. He laid his hands on yours, and glanced at you for your approval. The man gave you so much solitary and disappointments, yet the gentle touch was holding you back from kicking him out. His dark pupils were silently begging you. Begging you to keep him, caress him, love him. You stretched your arm wide, welcoming the blonde to a hug.
Tsukishima held you tightly, as if you will vanish and leave him again. He buried himself deep in the crook of your neck, feeling every inch of you in his embrace.
“I love you, and thank you.”
“Love you too, Kei.”

A few years ago, if you had told Y/N Y/L/N that she would be answering a phone call in the dead of night from Yamaguchi, she probably would’ve guessed that the two of them had forgotten about some project they were supposed to complete and the pair would’ve spent all night working on it while Tsukishima slept peacefully knowing he had finished it.
What Y/N never guessed on happening was Tsukishima stumbling through her front door, only barely being held up by Yamaguchi, the blond’s face covered in scuff marks and blood dripping from his nose and lips.
“What the hell happened?” Y/N gaped, immediately rushing to Tsukishima’s other side and helping him into the kitchen.
“Don’t even get me started,” Yamaguchi grumbled, muttering something about keeping your mouth shut and never would’ve gotten into this mess.
“Stop grumbling. I’m fine. You’re fine. Everyone’s fine,” Tsukishima huffed, pushing the two of them off but swaying a little.
“Tsukishima Kei, what the hell happened to you? You look like you got into a fight!” Y/N stared at him for a moment, watching as his gaze flickered away from hers. She glanced at Yamaguchi, as if hoping that would bring some answers, but he just glared at Tsukishima as well. “I’ll get the first aid kit,” she said after a beat of silence, walking to the other room.
There was a flurry of hushed whispers as she left, Yamaguchi insisting to Tsukishima that he needed to tell her what was going and Tsukishima being blatantly stupid and insisting that there was in fact, nothing going on.
By the time that Y/N returned, hands filled with some spare tissues and bandages, sprays and cotton balls, Yamaguchi had thrown up his hands in the air in exasperation, “I give up. I brought him this far. He’s your problem now,” he groaned, shaking his head towards Y/N. “I’m sorry for dumping him on you, but maybe you can talk some sense into him.”
Y/N and Tsukishima watched as Yamaguchi stormed off, leaving both of them in an awkward silence.
“Are you going to stand there or are you going to help me?” Tsukishima grumbled after a bit, sitting down on a nearby dining chair.
Y/N raised an eyebrow at him, part of her wanting to smack him in the head but thinking better of it considering his injuries. “Here, hold this to your nose,” she insisted, handing him the tissues as she glanced over his body. From what she could see, the most damage was on his face but if he could keep his nosebleed in order, she could tend to the scrapes and cuts that were starting to bleed on his knuckles.
Pulling up a chair next to him, Y/N sprayed some hydrogen peroxide onto his knuckles. Tsukishima inhaled sharply, pulling away from her grip as he winced, “What the hell is that?” He glared at her, trying not to make it obvious just how much that fucking hurt.
“Give me your fucking hands, Kei,” Y/N demanded, holding her hands out with another vicious look. “You gotta spray them before they get all infected.”
The boy hesitated before slowly letting her hands take his, bracing himself this time as she dabbed away the blood and finally wrapped it up in some medical bandages. “I’ll get you something cold for your nose, hang on,” she mumbled, shuffling to the freezer and digging through to find something helpful.
Tsukishima shifted awkwardly, trying to glance around at anything else so he didn’t have to sit in the silence. “Are you not going to ask?” He muttered out finally, avoiding her eyes as he checked to see how much his nose was still bleeding.
“How about I assume it was something stupid?” she quipped, bringing over a cold ice pack. “Here, I use this sometimes when my muscles hurt after swimming practice.”
He nodded slowly, placing it over his nose in hopes of bringing down any swelling. Now that he was sitting here and his adrenaline was going down, everything was starting to ache a lot more.
“It wasn’t stupid,” Tsukishima murmured, glancing at her for a moment.
Y/N laughed a bit, shaking her head, “Sure it wasn’t.”
Tsukishima frowned tightly, watching her as she cleaned him up. Her fingers delicately working along his skin, checking for any other cuts or scrapes along his arm. “Why would it be something stupid?”
“Because, the Tsukishima Kei that I grew up with only fought with snarky comebacks and sneers,” Y/N laughed a bit at the memories, glancing up at him and brushing her fingers along the cut on his eyebrow.
“Wouldn’t that mean that if I had to punch someone, it would be something serious?”
The girl couldn’t contain her laughter anymore, thinking about this string bean of a boy throwing hands, “You punched someone? It kinda just looks like you got used as a punching bag.”
“Hey, it was 3 to 1. And I left some pretty good cuts on them too, thank you very much,” Tsukishima groaned a bit as Y/N dabbed a bit of the peroxide on his eyebrow, swatting at her hand, “Okay okay. I think it’s clean now!”
“So if one of these gets infected, will you be bitching like a little baby then too?” She shot back, smacking his hand away from hers. “How’s your nose?”
Tsukishima pulled the tissues and cold pack away from his face, letting Y/N examine him, “Well, I don’t think it’s broken so you’ll probably be fine. Just don’t take a volleyball to the face anytime soon.”
He just rolled his eyes as she went to start a kettle, insisting that tea was good for healing.
“If I asked what it was about would you be honest?” Y/N questioned as she brought over two cups of tea.
“Would you believe me if I said they had just such punchable faces?”
“No.”
“Then no.”
Y/N rolled her eyes, kicking at his shin from under the table and making him whine a bit more, “Hey! I’m bruised all over the place!”
“Tell me what happened! Yamaguchi thought I should know so why shouldn’t I know?”
Tsukishima just looked away, fingers drumming along the mug that was warming his hands. “Just... some dude doing some dumb shit. Saying stupid things about...”
“About?”
“About you.”
Y/N stared at him for what felt like an eternity. Tsukishima wasn’t exactly the number one best example of a friend. And it wasn’t like there weren’t people before who didn’t like her. There were bound to be people saying shit.
“What did they say? Do I know them?” She asked finally, thinking back about the list of people she had in her head who definitely didn’t like her.
“It doesn’t matter, they were just being idiots,” Tsukishima tried to insist, sipping at his tea. “I was just annoyed and so I called them out for it. And the one guy took a swing at me. Then we just... did what guys do, I dunno.”
“Is Yamaguchi okay?” Y/N’s eyes widened, looking at her front doors as if the boy would magically still be there. “Did he get hurt?”
“No way. If anything, Yamaguchi probably broke the one guy’s nose,” Tsukishima snickered, thinking back to the moment where one of the dudes crumpled up in pain after Yams smacked him around.
Y/N nodded slowly, reminding herself to text the boy later and make sure he was alright. “You’re really not gonna tell me what they said?”
Tsukishima stretched his legs out slightly, getting more comfortable in the seat and avoided her eyes some more, as if pretending she hadn’t said anything. But the awkwardness exuding from him was very evident. “He just... said something about you being average... but still kept showing off these stupid pictures,” he finally muttered out, ears going red.
Y/N felt her heart drop a little. She didn’t need to hear anything more than pictures to know that her fucking ex-boyfriend was the one who was causing all this trouble. She had so many regrets about that relationship, and one of them was the photos that she had sent.
“I deleted them,” Tsukishima commented after glancing at her expression. “When I knocked him down I grabbed his phone and deleted them. I dunno if he has other copies somewhere but...”
Y/N practically threw herself across the table, wrapping the string bean boy into a hug. There was such a relief off of her shoulders, just knowing that Tsukishima had tried to get rid of them.
He grunted in response, pulling her closer into a hug but also shifting her weight around so it wasn’t on his side (which hurt like a bitch). “Stop doing stupid things for boys who are too dumb to realize what they have,” he commented, flicking her head.
She gave a little laugh, hugging him tighter for a moment before pulling away, “Yea yea... Does that mean I should stop taking care of you all the time?”
Tsukishima’s lips made a few protesting sounds, huffing before finally standing up and stretching. “I should get going. I don’t want you to stay up too late or you’ll be yawning all day tomorrow in math.”
Y/N smacked his arm a little making him wince a bit, which just made her laugh, “Go on then. Try to take a shower and ice your bruises. And next time you beat up my ex-boyfriend, call me so I can take a swing at him too.”
Tsukishima smirked and nodded, heading to the front door and slipping his shoes on.
“Hey Tsukishima?”
He glanced back at her, surprised to find the nervous look on her face. She shifted on her feet for a moment before reaching up and pressing a chaste kiss to his cheek, “I mean it. Thank you.”
Tsukishima burst into a fit of stammers, insisting that it wasn’t that big of a deal and she shouldn’t make it into one, but his cheeks were glowing red while he waved it away.
The next day at school, Y/N couldn’t help but smirk when her eyes landed on her black-eyed and scuffed up ex-boyfriend. For a string bean, apparently Tsukishima was pretty good at landing punches. Maybe it was the snarky expression on her face, or maybe it was just because she had walked by, but before Y/N could rush past him, her ex-boyfriend stepped in front of her, glowering down at her.
“Get out of my way, asshole,” Y/N huffed, stepping back slightly.
“You know, I always knew there was something going on with you and Four Eyes,” her ex told her in a low voice, arms crossed in front of his chest. “I should’ve known you were cheating on me.”
“Right, I cheated on you and then broke up with you for cheating on me,” Y/N raised an eyebrow up at him. “Get lost, idiot. I don’t have time for you.”
“You’re saying you weren’t seeing him behind my back? That it’s not suspicious that you two immediately started going out after we broke up?” His voice was raising, causing all the students nearby to glance in their direction, whispers filling the space around them.
“We aren’t going out,” Tsukishima’s voice thudded into the air, his heavy arm flopping onto Y/N’s shoulders. He patted her head gently as he gave her a simple smile before turning his glare onto the dude in front of him. “I didn’t ask her out when you two broke up. But if she’ll have me, I can do it here and now in front of you?”
The offer stunned everyone around them, even the whispering bunches of teens who had come around to see if these two bruised and beaten up boys would end up fighting again. Y/N looked up at Tsukishima with wide eyes, heart palpitating against her chest.
“I knew you liked her,” her ex scoffed. “Too bad she’s too good for you.”
“Well if she settled for the likes of you, I must have a pretty decent shot. I might not be the best boyfriend material, but at least I know not to talk shit about a girl like Y/N,” Tsukishima snapped back. His eyes finally met Y/N’s and she had to wonder for a moment if he was being serious or just saying this to show up the asshole in front of them.
“There’s no way she would go out with you-” the asshole glared at the two of them.
“Yes,” Y/N breathed out softly, both Asshole and Tsukishima’s eyes falling on her. “Ask me.”
Tsukshima’s usually scowling lips turned into a smile, patting her head and ruffling up her hair slightly, “Go out with me.”
Y/N nodded with a smile, still searching his eyes for any sign that this was a genuine interaction.
“Finally,” Yamaguchi huffed from behind the two of them, grinning widely as they all turned to look at him. “The two of you look good together. Now hurry up, we’re going to be late to class.”
Tsukishima grabbed Y/N’s hand before she or her ex could say anything, pulling her ahead as they followed Yams to class.
“W-Wait, Tsukishima,” Y/N stopped in her tracks as they got outside of the classroom, Yams already heading in.
“What?”
Y/N watched him carefully, still unsure of his intentions. “Thank you, for helping me out back there but...”
Tsukishima’s eyes darkened for a moment, like he was coming to some sort of realization, “If it was just a ploy to you, it’s fine. We can just say it was to get him off your back, that’s fine.”
She grabbed his arm as he started to move away, frowning as she looked up at him, “N-No, that’s... I just wanted to know if you... if you meant it.”
As his eyes met hers again, he tilted his head slightly, “Meant what?”
Y/N sighed, knowing they were going to end up going back and forth on this topic if she wasn’t straight up wit him. “Did... Did you really want to ask me out?”
He gave a smirk and Y/N’s heart started to fall - so it had been a joke this whole time then. “Obviously I wanted to ask you out. I’ve been wanting to for weeks now. Did you think I would just ask you out for no reason?”
Y/N wanted to point out that he could have just asked her out to humiliate her ex but seemed to catch onto this and just laughed. “If you think I’d actually fight a guy for just anyone, you’re stupider than I thought.”
She pouted in return, hitting his chest in defiance, “Hey!”
Tsukishima laughed and flicked her forehead, smirking down at her, “Go out with me. Seriously this time.”
Y/N glared playfully at him, pushing at his chest a little, “Fine. But you’ve got to be a bit nicer to me.”
“I took punches to the face for you, how much nicer can I get?” Tsukishima scoffed but bent down and kissed her nose gently. “Now hurry up, we’re late now, idiot.”
Y/N couldn’t help but feel like everyone was watching them as Tsukishima interlaced their fingers together and pulled her into class, dropping her off at her seat and giving her a cheeky wink, before taking his next to Yamaguchi.
She glanced at him every few seconds in class, pinching herself each time he would catch her eye and give her a small smile, wondering if her dreams had really come true. Had the guy she had fallen head over heels for really just asked her out?
Yes. And surprisingly, it was all thanks to her piece of shit ex boyfriend and a bloody nose.
