Safari - Are’s Daughter + Spoken
https://soundcloud.com/bandsafari/ares-daughter
Safari were spending so much time in the bush that they forgot to let us know they released a bunch of lovely tunes 2 months back - much luck however, we’re gonna cover 2 of the tunes for your pleasure this time!
The first one ‘Are’s Daughter’ is personally one of my favourite tunes in some time as it connects a nice big array of solid influences and manages to somehow pack them all into a solid 4min package. It’s lofi, it’s certain diy, there’s some dorky The Frogs vibes that merges into the lofi slackery early Built to Spill which then goes full Pixies aka ‘Break My Body’ from Surfer Rosa - I’m fucking loving the screams around the 2 min part. It’s just a beautiful chill, noise and quite pleasant 4 min of your time, I’d recommend going twice.
https://soundcloud.com/bandsafari/spoken
‘Spoken’ is the second track we got sent off of the ‘Draw’ release from earlier this year. It’s a little less ‘full on’ than Are’s Daughter, but still quite a pleasant company. The vocal melodies show one of the major strengths of ‘Safari’, it’s kept really simple, often repetitive but the melodies keep it all floating extremely well - and then I have to say - that their singer has the same tone as Black Francis is just an amazing plus - for someone who still loves to go back an listen to Surfer Rosa, Trompe Le Monde, Doolittle and other old Pixies albums, this gives me hope that there’s new blood coming! I look forward to what the time will bring for Safari if they end up in the right hands.
Yaehsun - Show Me How You Love
https://soundcloud.com/user-282851032/show-me-how-to-love
Like a soothing bedroom version of early Tame Impala, Yaehsun gets away with copying all the nice things of TI without coming across as a silly ripoff - many have gone that way and never delivered - It’s not the case here. It’s damn smooth and I would be very inclined to put this tune on a sunday chill playlist - something I would most likely never do with a Tame Impala track. I look very much forward to seeing what else will come from this outfit!
Mouthbreather - Modern Girl
youtube
This is about as “folky” as it gets for us, but it’s not really folk - it’s got way too much of something else that I’m not quite sure how to pin down. Somehow I feel like I’m hearing this mix of Oasis and the National, but I’m not sure - I am sure though that that’s only a good thing. Lyrics tells a pretty straight ahead and nice story, the video has some really nice cartoon-parts that was a pleasure to spend time with. It’s a pretty simple song but I have a feeling that a lot of work and love went into this, it’s definitely worth a listen and a watch, just to take a quiet breather while everyones passing by around you in highspeed. You don’t always need to go fast, remember to enjoy the things and people around you <3
I, Doris - Just Some Doris
https://soundcloud.com/user-60096052/just-some-doris-1/s-kR6sc
Oh another home-run from Britain before they exit EU, if anything I hope that the whole thing will bring a ton of great music built on anger and frustration. This lovely little tune by Doris is rather comical, not in the annoying way of course, it’s more dorky - Dorky Doris, fuck I’d love to have a friend who called herself that. Now I love dorky, although naming yourself dorky is probably more ballsy than dorky, anyhow enough of this - the tune is cosy, you’ll enjoy it! I for one hope I get to see I, Doris live sometime!
Pink Soup - Epiphany
https://pinksoup.bandcamp.com/track/epiphany
Loads of lofi bedroom-electro vibes in this sleepy slacker tune from Pink Soup, it’s a perfect soundtrack for a delirious sunday stroll to the local grocery store still halfway gone from last nights escapades. I have absolutely no idea what’s really being sung about, but it doesn’t matter, I feel whats going on and thats exactly what the track’s supposed to do - switch your mind off and just let go for a little while, we’ll be okay, this boat is gonna dock on the other side somewhere.
The Oxen - Glass Pastures
https://soundcloud.com/theoxen/glass-pastures
Damn perfect tune for getting completely lost - this track makes me want to get a garden, somewhere I can just lie down on grass and have butterflies and bumblebees flying around above my head. I’m going to need some sunflowers too - I can already see them swaying in tune to this song with the wind, it’s going to be fucking magical!
The tune evolves beautifully also - it’s smooth sailing with the change-up of a c-part where it gets a bit more rocky, but you’ll be back - it’s like a pretty nice guided audio-meditation - letting you ride their magical rollercoaster safely back to the docking bay. I’d love to try some of the other rides in this delicious theme park <3
Royal Target - By My Side
https://soundcloud.com/smiths1967/by-my-side
This tune reminds me of the first albums by bands like Beat Happening and the Vaselines. There’s some sort of “puppy like” thing about songs on those albums as there is with this tune by Royal Target. It’s kinda tumbling ahead in the most charming of ways. This song gets some extra vibe by the thick german “english” accent, it just really works.
I know from conversation that the tune itself holds enormous meaning to the artist and is quite personal, which is always a nice thing to know that something was created with a lot of emotion - that’s why songs like this works out, you don’t to drown in technical skills or have equipment more expensive than your house, you just need integrity and emotion. I hope 2020 will bring plenty of more songs down this road.
Modesta - Ode to the Peculiar
https://open.spotify.com/track/2KrbjD9t31ZpBKUocd7M5c
This is about as ‘poppy’ as it gets for us, but it’s so damn good this here. It’s like cutting hot butter with a sharp knife or watching someone squeeze silly putty in slow motion, I mean come one - that stuff is trance-like! Why do you think ASMR is so popular these days - I'm pretty sure Modesta is the true link between music and asmr. You should give it a try, it will make your day better, promise!
Take care everyone and have a good new years.
See you in 2020

Yaehsun shares inspiration behind 'Waterbaby'
Tumblr media
Proving that you can live in two worlds is nothing new for Jason Haberman as he has made his career playing with over a dozen industry artists and Juno award winners. He also creates fuzzy solo music with electronic flourishes under the moniker Yaehsun. His new single "Waterbaby" is a soulful, rhythmic take on indie-pop. Listen below and read the interview! https://soundcloud.com/user-282851032/waterbaby/ Can you talk to us about the inspiration behind 'Waterbaby'?  The inspiration for this song came from a combination of some sounds I was getting on my Korg Poly 61, mixed with a seriously shitty winter and longing for the warmth of  summer. After I took it to José to mix he heard it and immediately felt a Jimmy Cliff vibe which is what sparked the vocal melody and lyrics. How has your community contributed to your success?  Toronto’s music community is very active and it seems that everyone I know in the city is working towards the same goal. I would say that I would not be successful if it wasn’t for the constant flow of music coming from my friends.  What advice would you give other musicians?  To stop following trends in popular music and spend time experimenting with your gear, and your sound. Be open to collaborations and just finish it, put it out, and start working on the next thing.  Describe to our audience your music-making process. I do a lot of looping, rather then writing “a song” I like to drill a feel / rhythm into my body and focus more on what your ears are hearing rather then making that chorus pop or finding the perfect bridge. Also hearing the part in your head before laying it down. I try not to add things for the sake of boredom or what traditional rock bands have in there mix. Most of the clarity and big decisions I make happen when I am not in-front of a computer or have no instrument in my hand.  How did it feel when you released your debut single?  It felt great! Long time coming, and it feels like it’s only the beginning now that I know first hand how easy it is nowadays to distribute music on your own.  If you could collaborate with any musician/band, who would it be? And why? I thought about this question long and hard and I can’t not think about the people that I have lined up to work with this year. It goes back to that question about success and community and I truly feel the people that inspire me the most are the people in my friend circle. What first got you interested into music? My brother, he started playing bass at around 13, I would have been about 11. He had no one to jam with so he told me I should rent some drums. I went and got some that day and haven’t stopped since. The first song I remember playing with him was either Out on the tiles - Led Zeppelin or Fire - Jimi Hendrix. Read the full article

You might recognize Yaehsun (Jason Haberman) from performing live with bands such as Dan Mangan, Zeus, Yukon Blonde, Jason Collett, The Wooden Sky and so on. He is an active musician in the Toronto music scene and is just starting to find his voice as he embarks on his solo career. Expect more collaborations and experiments to come.

A self-described ‘underwater love song,’ Yaehsun’s ‘Waterbaby’ is a gorgeously lo-fi ode to long summer days rippling with synths and padded with soft, pulsing beats, as lovingly crafted by the Toronto producer and featuring vocals from José Contreras.
As Yaehsun (aka Jason Haberman) says about the track via press release:
‘This was our first time collaborating with each other. The recording process was like dipping two pieces of dark chocolate into a jar of natural peanut butter at once for the first time. But seriously, Jose is a complete inspiration of a human. Pure trust of intuition.’

Yaehsun - Voya (Indie Rock)
Tumblr media
🕑 Lesedauer: 1 min / 📷 CTTO / Yaehsun Offizielles Erscheinungsdatum: 01.07.2022 Ein verdammt genialer Instrumental Track.

Loves Me / Loves Me Not
Another bout, here we go!
Hugo Hamlet - Are You a Libra Like Me?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkn-6TES4eI
Here’s another wonderful treat for the people who frequent and enjoy the oddities out there. Hugo himself presents his music as a mix of Julio Iglesias and David Bowie - this itself would be enough to get a thumbs up. But with Hugo’s underplayed extravaganza in what goes for both clothing and dance-moves as well as lines such as “I really can’t choose between a Chihuahua and an Italian Greyhound, you know you’re in for a treat.
It’s wonderfully odd and the track is chill. If ever you have an accident where you need some heavy painkillers, you should open a bottle of wine and put this on - I could not think of a better track for that strange bliss.
Thank you for the adventure Hugo <3
Silver Medal - Tax Season
https://soundcloud.com/silvermedalpdx/tax-season
Another slacker track for you. There’s a very pleasant memory of the great early 2000s bands in the vocals of this.
Down the road around 1.30 the track changes up - and this part is interesting in terms of that I’ve often seen or heard bands label themselves to sounding like Weezer, but every time they do that, it’s always some ridiculous rip off of the bad parts of Weezer - those “haha funny” parts, that’s not really funny except for some of the songs on the album. You should give credit to Weezer though that their early stuff was a nice rough frontrunner for a lot of slacker niceness. And this track around 1.30 does everything every band saying they sound like Weezer wish they’d be able to do. I think the magic is that these guys probably listened more to Built to Spill and Dinosaur Jr. than Weezer.
Pleasant, thanks gentlemen.
Yaehsun x Jose Contreras - La De Ba
https://soundcloud.com/user-282851032/la-de-ba
There’s a lot of bands out there wanting to sound like Tame Impala, what they seem to forget sometimes is that Tame Impala is just fucking good at coming up with new was of being they are, and they change their sound all the time which is what’s keeping it interesting and those albums that was interesting 5 years ago - don’t copy it too much because it’s such a special sound so you should only be borrowing from Mr. Parker.
Yahsun x Jose Contreras La De Ba is one of the first tracks in a long time I’ve heard that borrows heavily from the band but does it in a really nice way. They made it drony like the newer stuff, but it’s got that old sound. It’s almost like a slacker version of Kevin Parker travelling back in time bringing his new songs to the old records. You should go check it out - you can basically listen to this anywhere, I bet shopping in the frozen section would be amazing with this playing.
Liza Anne - Devotion
https://soundcloud.com/artsandcrafts/liza-anne-devotion-1/s-KB6ol
This is one of the “nicer” sounding production we’ve feature in a while, but its very well justified in the intensity and personality that Liza brings to this track. Solid production where this track could be played pretty much anywhere, but it keeps the spark, it’s not trying to be friends with anyone at the daycare of our musical playgrounds, the other kids will wanna come play themselves.
Liza goes through a bunch of various vocal attitudes and pretty much nails every one of them flawlessly - a nod to her producers as well making this work out the way it does. If I am to go shopping at one of those shops that plays typical awful music, I would be sure to suggest they add this to their playlist, just tell them it’s the new biggest hit and they’ll go for it - you should do the same, this will infiltrate well.
Das Kope - Kids in the Sky
https://soundcloud.com/daskope/kids-in-the-sky/s-RqsDu
Much like Yaehsun & Jose  Contreras’ tune this borrows in a nice way from Kevin Parker, not going overboard on anything, but just taking bits and pieces and mixing it with their own more minimalistic style. Adding some extreme contrasts along the way, this has a drony vibe to it that would put anyone in a good mood walking down the street with a little sunshine. You don’t need to go anywhere fast with this, it’s a little trip of its own <3
Baseball Gregg - Gratitude (feat. Mediocre Café)
https://soundcloud.com/baseball-gregg/gratitude-feat-mediocre-cafe/s-ocfvG
Gregg’s a chill guy I’m pretty sure, I’m not sure though if the featuring here is an actual human being or perhaps it’s just the café where he went to record this song? I could see this being born in the back of a shady café. However, the second verse might disappoint that fantasy as this is definitely where senor Café enters the equation - I have to say both of these lovely gentlements contribution to the track gives it it’s own wonderful life. Instrumentals are simple - the slight solo in the middle is one of the better uses of solos I’ve heard in a long time - it’s not meant to be fancy.
If I was making a movie I would definitely place this track in the diner scene, probably this is one of the better ‘diner scenes’ songs. If we are to start a ‘best of diner scenes’ lest just put this at no.1 right away.
See you next time ladies and gentlemen, there will be more goodies to come <3<3<3

Jason Haberman (aka Yaehsun) is a Toronto-based Canadian multi-instrumentalist. He has been a part of many different collaborations and touring bands over the years and is just now starting to release his own stuff. He wants you to listen to his music, or not. Currently, he is working on a "Sleep" album that will be released before the end of the year with the intent to help him (and you) get better nights of sleep.
The track "La De Ba” is the second collaboration between Yaehsun and Jose Contreras (of By Divine Right). “La De Ba” is an ode to the summer, warmth, sun, coffee, waiting for it to return, again and again.
