Odesta Fic Rec List

mortal fate is hard (you'd best get used to it) by mrworldwidestan - This is one that I actually just started reading (and is recent + currently updating) but so far, I really appreciate the world building. It’s from Finnick’s point of view during his Games and goes into detail about his family life and the district outside of his household, which I find really immersive. 

I Know The End by kenniiohontesha - Someone actually recommended this one to me a few weeks ago and since it never officially made it onto a list, I decided to put it on here now. I can’t say much about it because I haven’t given it a very close read, but from what I can tell, the world building is rich here also. It takes place during Annie’s Games, and alternates between Finnick and Annie’s POV. 

Landlocked by throttlegainwell - This is a series that focuses on Finnick’s life in the Capitol and his relationships. It’s not specifically Odesta, but there is Odesta in it, along with Finnick and Mags. I like this one because it offers some insight into how Finnick would think and act when he’s not at home, and it’s cool to see different relationships represented. 

we're hollow like the bottles that we drain by thrashunreal - This is a great Finnick and Johanna one-shot, and this author also has a lot of great Finnick fics, as well as fic for other characters that you might like. I really like this story’s use of second person POV because it creates such a closeness with the characters. 

What The Water Gave Me by Zartbitterpoetin - This is a really cool AU series that I read a while ago but I don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet. This could be a good read if you’re in the mood for some canon divergence or just something different. My favorite is the last installment of the series, which is also in second person POV. 

Weather With You by TheWuzzy - I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this one yet (or at least I don’t think I have) because it’s so good! This takes place during Annie’s Games and the characterization is wonderful. The dynamic between Finnick and Annie feels so organic and compelling. I really like this one. 

Rip Current - This work has been orphaned, which is why I didn’t include an author name, but it is complete. What I like about this one is that Annie’s voice and perception of the world is so unique. She’s very analytical here, which is not a trait usually attributed to her, so her character feels very fresh. This also takes place during Annie’s Games. 

Some self-promo here, but I figured I’d take advantage of the THG renaissance and mention that I’m mdr_24601 on ao3 and I write a ton of Odesta as well, so maybe there’s something on there you might like.

: a small piece of advice from someone who has been writing for 15 years on and off. if your drafts/replies or writing in general is giving you stress or is not sparking joy, maybe that is a sign that something needs to change. roleplay should NEVER be an obligation or a chore - something that you have to do! ever! this is not a job, this is not folding laundry, this is not having to pay utilities. The only person who puts pressure on you to write or do drafts is you, so change that! and if you have writing partners that make you feel like you have to write, or that push you for replies etc. get rid of them asap! you are not paid for this, your life does not depend on it. and in a world where we can all see the heinous inhumane ways life is and can be horrible and terrifying. writing fictional characters should be a lovely little breeze that gives you a creative output. a refreshing breath of air. we should be respectful to each other & enjoy our time writing or just gushing over our favs. take care of yourself & delete anything you don't want to write/have no muse for! put yourself first!

I actually don’t know what my life will be when im done reading TMTL— yes im being full dramatic!! christine and erik are rubbing off on me okay!! Like on one hand i wish i had the time to read it all at once but im also glad im getting more time with it cause it’s lasting longer but im now on ch 23 and im starting to mourn the loss already. Im feeling pre-hungover but am also trying to absorb every line into the fibre of my being?? And live in the moment??

Thank you so much. It's always fascinating to me when someone decides to live blog their read-through (fascinating, flattering, lovely, wonderful, humbling, exciting, refreshing my inbox every five seconds, grinning for days, and happy dancing in my chair, and too many other words to describe the generosity of your time, because time is our most precious commodity). Because they get to the really fluffy parts, but I see the pitfall coming and I'm like "Awww.....OH NO."

Everyone who has read what I've written has always passes it on with the caveat of "good luck" attached and I don't know whether to be flattered or slightly insulted. I'm going with flattered in that mad scientist sort of way.

As for what's next, I'm gonna shamelessly, and I mean S H A M E L E S S L Y plug my other fic Ultra/Violet here. It's not at all the same fandom, but I think it's my better work because I took what I learned in writing Teach Me and refined it and honestly I write the same stuff over and over again. I'm not proud, everything is death and the maiden. I like it, I'll consume it again and again and again and--you get the idea. But like with Teach Me, I wrote Ultra/Violet during a time of extreme mourning. Both times I was suffering death in huge ways and it brought a lot of the rawness out, but also a lot of the healing, working through the process over and over in the writing and editing and publishing, so I think that's why they hit harder.

Also, U/V is funnier, and I'm really just a puffed-up little court jester trying very hard to get a giggle out of you guys <3
