I'm curious as to whether you have any thoughts (or further knowledge) about Zhuge Liang seemingly not having any kids for the first ~20 years of his marriage, because it just seems extemely odd to me.
Maybe Lady Huang was living separately from him from most of that time? Obviously we don't know exactly how old she was, but even if she was 16 when they married, it would mean that they waited until she was in her late 30s or so before she started popping them out, and they had (at least) three.
Perhaps these weren't Lady Huang's kids. Maybe she was infertile and their mother was a concubine or 2nd wife, but I know of no records that Liangliang had any other women in his life.
I dunno. Maybe it's just the Xuanliang shipper in me, but I somehow can't help but find it significant that Zhuge Liang didn't have kids (or regular sex with his wife??) until 4 years after Liu Bei died.
I think it’s certainly possible that Zhuge Liang intentionally waited the standard 3 year mourning period after Liu Bei’s death before conceiving a child, hence Zhuge Zhan’s birth in the fourth year after Liu Bei’s death.
It is also possible that Zhuge Liang didn’t have any sons until late in life because Lady Huang was infertile or suffered complications during the birth of a daughter —since we don’t know if Zhuge Guo was born before or after her brother —that prevented her from becoming pregnant again, and Zhuge Liang did not want to marry a concubine while she was still alive out of devotion to her.
Before the birth of Zhuge Zhan, Zhuge Liang had asked his brother Zhuge Jin to let him adopt his nephew because he has no son of his own. Zhuge Jin thus sent his son Zhuge Qiao over to the Shu-Han Kingdom. This means that whatever the reason for their lack of sons, Zhuge Liang and Lady Huang had already found a solution through their nephew.
So I think it is also possible that sometime between the adoption of his nephew and the birth of Zhuge Zhan, Lady Huang passed away, Zhuge Liang remarried, and the second wife or concubine gave birth to Zhuge Zhan and his little brother.

Not so much a confession, but would you guys mind tagging ships? I don’t mind most of them and I know I’ve shipped spammed before, but some are just starting to impact my joy of characters on an individual basis. People should be able to ship what they want and this way they can do it and others won’t be “ugh” if they don’t like the ship…I probably could’ve worded that better, sorry.
no that makes total sense ! from this batch alone i've seen that you're not alone with this sentiment. we can definitely start doing this going forward, however two things:
a) how would you like it tagged? with ship names (like [throwing out a random example here] xuanliang for xuanzang/liangyu) or tag it as their full names (xuanzang sanzang/qin liangyu?)
the first one might be more complicated for those unfamiliar with ship names, however the second one is a bit troublesome to type out.. both for us, the mods, and those trying to blacklist the tags.
b) please be okay with more 'just in case' tags because what one considers ship vs friendship is sometimes not black and white
