"There was a sort of unspoken understanding between the two of them — that the exchange was a certain, rare kind of comfort. It was the kind that was found once in a blue moon – far less often than it was needed. The kind that was surely not normal by society's standards, but was so innocent that it need not be explained to anyone who didn't care to try and understand it."
Oh don't mind me, just busy crying over this excerpt about unconventional comforting from a XieHua friendship appreciation ff I recently read... 🥲

wu xie/xiai hua hehehe
now this is a ship you don’t see anybody talk about really, which is a shame because it’s another one that’s not a hair pull to me still not screeching about it though and is genuinely interesting to think about
another one i’m not invested in and ultimately don’t really see that way purely because i’m interested in seeing other things, but you can’t deny that as a duo they’re fascinating. and yes i will hit them both with a crowbar (affectionate) because when you put them together they’re incredibly annoying and very smart and efiicient heathens. if you read the books, the latter half of book 7 in particular spends a lot of time paralleling and ultimately contrasting them, showing that they’re incredibly similar in sometimes uncanny ways that wu xie comments of frequently by feeling a sense of kinship with xiao hua despite xiao hua spending a solid portion of their time together in siguniang politely but distantly inconvenienced with having to babysit up until wu xie proves himself to be both reliable and witty. what wu xie ends up choosing as their dividing point is xiao hua’s ruthlessness and readiness to prioritise his own survival and the greater good at the cost of individual lives, even those of allies, which is a mindset he’s had to adopt out of necessity, and is one wu xie fundamentally is incapable of having when it comes to people he cares about unless under duress (and is the reason why sand sea is such a damaging and traumatic time for him).
they have an almost instinctive understanding of each other, especially years down the line, and their strategic intelligence is pretty much equal as far as sand sea showcases. i do think in many ways, maybe less so later, but definitely at first, xiao hua sees the ghost of who he could have been if life hadn’t dealt him the cards it did in wu xie, and while he’s frank with him and makes it clear in book 8 for example that wu xie has to deal with the consequences his choices entail, he shelters him from having blood on his hands as much as he can, re: when comes the time to kill the men who tried to stage a mutiny against wu sanxing, xiao hua intentionally gets wu xie drunk so he can stay passed out in their safehouse while he and panzi go do the deed. it’s small mercies like that. so they’re definitely an interesting pair
as far as deserves better fan content i think it’s more i just. haven’t really seen any. it might also be because i just don’t go looking for it since it’s not my thing but it’s not a ship i’ve seen much of at all really

I enjoyed reading tgcf for a variety of reasons and was very interested in the mysteries they solved and the overall narrative (the flashbacks killed me but also the reveal!!) but the animation is on Netflix and I’m honestly watching it for hualian interactions (why is it hualian instead of xiehua or chenglian dhdhdhdh) but I feel like Xie Lian’s VA isn’t as “expressive”? As I had read his voice to be?
#it’s a weird issue so I’m mostly watching for nice visuals of different parts but I don’t think I would have been nearly as interested if I#started with this first#m#I really love a number of characters in the novel but in this I’m only? really interested#in Hua Cheng and Ling Wen — well I like Xie Lian with Hua Cheng#and once I get to Banyue I’ll probably like her#I really hope this gets more popular tho#they’re just so sweet and go through so much#tgcf

xiuxiu/xiao hua/wu xie for the ship meme??
ohhh now this is interesting 👁️
i feel like i'm flooding the tags at this point oops
i'm not going to lie i've never really thought about these three as a ship but i need you to know the first thing that came to mind was the spiderman meme and it's all three of them pointing at each other 😂
it's another interesting one that i'm still not screeching about this thing needs a spare square for that but i feel like it ultimately runs into the same problem that xiehua does for me, in the sense they're all too similar in certain specific ways for it to truly work for their personalities. i do think these three have a great dynamic to explore though, both together and paired off into different two-by-two options. they're all childhood friends (or more like long-lost childhood friends in wu xie's case) are all three the heirs (or in xiao hua's case acting head, that happens a bit later for xiuxiu) of their respective jiumen families, and essentially carry similar baggage in terms of the burdens of their elders' choices impacting their lives to different extents. though some do a good job of showcasing how they work, namely ultimate note in particular, in my opinion none of the dramas really do it justice, so i'm going to be basing myself off of books 7 and 8 more particularly, because there's actually a wealth of material to look at there. you've got xiao hua and xiuxiu, who've grown up together and are good friends (one of xiao hua's only friends really), and they both trust each other' inherently as well as each other's respective competence. they work seamlessly really, and while i tend to see their relationship as more familial than romantic, it's not a stretch to see it that way. i've already touched on wu xie and xiao hua so i won't get back into that here, so i'll move on to wu xie and xiuxiu directly
wu xie comments multiple times on the fact he feels xiuxiu's mind seems to work very similarly to his, and i don't think he's wrong about that given you discover fairly quickly she just about as persistantly stubborn and crafty about it when she sets her eyes on a goal. she's the one, who observing from a young age that her grandmother (who favored her over her brothers because the huo family is matriarchal) was troubled in curious ways by her aunt huo ling's disappearance, investigated it on her own, discovered the discrepancies in the photographs huo ling was in pre and post banai expedition, hunted down jin wantang, and is the one who posted the missing persons ad that says "i have the fish" that wu xie finds while googling xiaoge's name all the way back in the first book. all this at the big age of 18. all this to say she's about as cunning and determined as wu xie proves himself to be, and while they're not the same people, and xiuxiu carries her own faults and shortcomings due in large part to her youth and inexperience (though even that in some ways mirros wu xie's who's never truly naive, only inexperienced), they're also quite similar. i've seen a number of people comment on wu xie and xiao hua being mirror images of each other, and they're not wrong, but there's also something to be said about xiuxiu in many ways being something of wu xie's female counterpart. i could go more into this namely the kinda vague hairpull idea i have that maybe xiuxiu in some ways might represent a facet of his idea of the ideal women that he still doesn't pursue that way but i'd be getting off topic
all this too much to say that i feel all three of them are weirdly different sides of die i can't say coin if there's three of them, and it even shows in their solidarity once wu xie drags himself enough out of his severe depression post zhang family tomb and its fallout. he chooses to face xiuxiu, who at first resented his desecrating of her grandmother's corpse (which for context, bodies are meant to be buried whole in chinese tradition, it is extremely taboo to do what he did), and because she's reasonable she quickly forgave him and warmed up to him again. from there, both wu xie and xiao hua act as xiuxiu's main support system to help her navigate the fraught huo family politics and the family business after huo xiangu's death, xiao hua in the north, wu xie in the south as he'd taken over wu sanxing's territory and businesses by then. up until tibetan sea flower, all three of them are very much a united front, and i'd say xiao hua and xiuxiu in some ways act as wu xie's support system just as much pangzi does over the phone, seeing as they indulge (xiao hua especially) wu xie's fixation on the things he brought back from the zhang family tomb
so tldr; i don't ship it like that but i do really love their relationship and i'm glad xiuxiu is more actively involved with them now

First Lines Tag Game
@fizferret tagged me!
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line.
1. Space is cold. (can’t take the sky; DMBJ ot7 space au)
2. Xie Yuchen was a busy man. (nonstop game, get used to it; DMBJ HeiHua)
3. Hua’er~ I brought a kid home! (Five Times[...]; DMBJ HeiHua)
4. There were no walls, no prisons that could hold Wang Pangzi. (together yet apart; DMBJ iron triangle ot3 ladyhawke au)
5. Wu Xie was an Evening. (just a bit fucked up; DMBJ Iron triangle ot3 and a bit of XieHua seduretu au)
6. Xiaoge was not the best conversationalist. (look at the road ahead; DMBJ PingPang with background iron triangle ot3)
7. Qiao Chusheng was not surprised that he did not get any response from Lu Yao. (Paris; MRIAD triad)
8. Ding Mao didn’t actually remember when they heard their father give this specific warning to them for the first time. (wish all my weaknesses could be hidden; Tientsin Mystic ot4 daemon au)
9. Qin Yi Heng coming to his room was not that unusual - they lived on the same compound, after all, and they would often talk about new clues, or anything new they found - most of their notes and maps were in Qin Er’s room, that much is true, but nevertheless, Qin Er would still come down to his room. (hear the sound of each others’ hearts;Psych-Hunter, Qin Yi Heng/Jiang Shuo; Jiang Shuo/Yuan Mu Qing)
10. Sorceresses should only marry in a full sedoretu, or not at all - her mother had told Gu Ying that once. (together or not at all; Tientsin Mystic ot4 sedoretu au)
11. It all started simple enough - a case, an investigation. (those who are destined to be infinite; MRIAD/Tientsin Mystic crossover, TM ot4 + MRIAD triad)
12. Chen Youli didn’t want to think about Qiao Chusheng after the entire shadow theatre fiasco. (view from outside; MRIAD triad)
13. “I hope one day you will be in a marriage with my daughter.” (don’t ever want to let go of the line that is you; MRIAD triad)
14. “We’re gonna have to get you some new furniture.” (Flight of Crows; Etsusa Bridge)
15. There are many different types of birds. (How To Find A Cuckoo’s Nest; Etsusa Bridge)
16. Dogs and cats and rats are everywhere on the island. (Birds of a Feather; Etsusa Bridge)
17. Fan Junyao was good at seeing the details from a young age. (pieces of a whole; Tientsin Mystic, Fan Junyao/Rong Aoshuang background Tientsin ot4)
18. De-you’s life always was somewhere between predictable and unpredictable.(unpredictable predictability; Tientsin Mystic ot4)
19. Yu Si did not really think he would have a lot of prospects in life. (future prospects; Tientsin Mystic ot4 with a bit of Ding Mao/Hu Tianming)
20. <Did ya hear? I heard Snake Hands killed someone!> (of urban legends and love stories; Etsusa Bridge/Durarara!! SH crossover, Kuon/Yahiro/Himeka)
WELL UH I kind of thought we would reach into my card game openings too, but all of these are cdramas and naritaverse. Oh well, whoops. I like the lines I did in the Caw! Caw! series because on 16 and 15 I started all poetic and metaphorical and then in 14 there is Kugi bitching he wants new furniture. Truly poetic cinema.
I also like the opening line of 20 because of the Ikebukuro Message Boards feeling.
I’m just gonna tag @insertimaginativenamehere and @simonlorden if ya wanna do it
