#Xie Lian's luck

I'm still thinking about Xie Lian's luck. Even if I accept the premise that a lack of good luck results in extreme bad luck, I still have questions. I don't remember if this is fandom or cannon, but I know that Xie Lian is kind of treated like a bad luck charm. Because his bad luck doesn't just affect him, but also those around him. And that kind of makes sense. If a house falls down it's not going to only hit one person when a bunch of people are inside. It also parallels Hong'er who was supposed to bring bad luck to the people around him (according to Mei Nianqing).
However, Xie Lian doesn't stop receiving (producing?) good luck, his share is just dispersed before it can affect him or his circumstances. So, I really like the idea that disregarding outside factors (wars, Qi Rong messing everything up, Shi Qingxaun starting and spreading a fire) the people around Xie Lian are actually luckier because they are the closest to his dispersed luck. Like the Guilded Banquet wasn't bad luck, it was a malicious plot. If anything Lang Qianqiu was lucky that he was late to his own party. The only bad luck involved was that he walked in right when Xie Lian had stabbed his dad. And that mostly affected Xie Lian.
All this is to say that I'd love a fanfic that had pre-cannon Xie Lian get kidnapped and used like the Child of Omelas. Maybe one of his kidnappers takes him to the Gambler's Den as a good luck charm only to be slaughtered by Hua Cheng. Or maybe Feng Xin and Mu Qing find him after investigating a super lucky village that has one spot that is like the worst place to be in.

"I hope you understand that i'm too old to give you any pieces of advice", says weird man in old worn out white clothing. No chance he belongs to this world. What a mess.
"That's great, because I wouldn't listen to any", Luo Binghe simply answers.

I keep seeing Wei Wuxian slander (libel?) And I won't stand for it. Wei Wuxian is not a bad cook. He just happens to cook food that is very spicy because that's how he likes it. Other people who like spicy food would probably also like it, and people who are not used to spicy food will not. This does not make him a bad cook, this just makes his food toxic to people like Lan Wangji (and me)

One of the common headcanons about Xie Lian i get a bit salty over is that he can't draw... Just because HC is a good artist and has a shitty handwriting doesn't mean XL sucks at drawing if his writing is good!! He had personal teachers for that kinda stuff since very early age! And he loves to draw, too. He's also a good musician and had earned money for his artistic skills over these 800 years. It wasn't just crushing boulders smh...

So Xie Lian has super bad luck because his good luck is dispersed by his second shackle. But shouldn't that just mean his luck is base line neutral and sometimes bad? Like he doesn't have any good luck, but that shouldn't mean he always had bad luck. He shouldn't be attracting bad luck, just not receiving any good luck. For example, we know he always roles snake eyes (unless he is betting on the lowest role or Hua Cheng gives him luck), but shouldn't he just always roles 3s and below? Like the highest combined number he can get is six and he sometimes gets less? This might be a cultural difference on how luck works on my part, but in my opinion have no good luck does not equate to having the worst luck ever. I believe that the Doylist reason for his bad luck is to show Xie Lian's literally reverse of fortune. However, I believe that the Watsonian reason is that Jun Wu purposely made it so Xie Lian wasn't just dispelling his good luck, but that he was also attracting bad luck.

Hua Cheng: * gives his luck to Xie Lian so he can go through the secret door without falling into a giant earth worm pit or getting chased by cannibals *
Xie Lian: Hey, Wind Master, how about you roll the dice this time?

I'm not saying the Xie Lian merch is as cursed with bad luck as its inspiration but I did decide to use my Xie Lian phone stand when cooking tonight and my key ingredient (Philadelphia/cream cheese) turned out to be unexpectedly mouldy... Sooo gutted I'd even made fresh pasta for this dish.
It was my own fault, I'd checked/bought fresh everything else, did manage to salvage it using tips I've picked up from watching waaay too much food network lol (should've just pivoted to risotto but had my mind in for pasta lol)
I usually use the Hua Cheng stand for cooking as I cook a lot of tomato based things and he's easier to clean when things get everywhere but thought I'd give his husband his moment to be used for something other than propping up my Xie Lian minidoll for pics lol
