All I need is to get the front sight post pinned and the barrel pinned and welded, and then replace that garbage optic mount, and then this guy will be done.
I've decided to swallow my southpaw pride and swap out the left-handed upper for an M16A1 upper I had lying around. I also decided to go with a polymer handguard to save on weight, and I'll use the lefty upper and the quad rail for a 14.5" M4gery build I've also been slowly working on.
I need cheaper hobbies.

I finally got my hands on an actual ambi AR lower.
Also while I was filling out the 4473 to pick it up today, I noticed they now have non-binary as a gender option. I can't help wondering how many chud meltdowns that's triggered so far.
#ar 15#xm177#guns#firearms#projects#also very tempted to go even more retro and put oldschool triangular handguards on it

Vote on My Next Hyperfixation Purchase
For the LRRP collection, I am between two airsoft guns. Eventually I would like to get both, but I don't know how long that will take, so I need to choose one or the other at the moment upon which to hyperfixate.
I am between:
the VFC XM16E1
Pros: Quintessential Vietnam rifle Extremely, extremely good replica Metal Gear Solid 3 Cons: Expensive Not especially sexy
Or the EMG XM177 / GAU-5/A
Pros: Complement to the XM177E1 and XM177E2 I already have Extremely good replica of a sexy and obscure variant with one important exception Cons: Why for the love of God is the serial number not stamped and why is it so white? Would I just live with it? Would I try to rub it off? Is it possible to remove that serial number and stamp a new one? Will there ever be another, superior replica of the GAU-5/A that doesn't make this baffling mistake??

It seems more and more lately, me and my beloved's AR15's are balancing modern and retro design assets, and @bureau-of-mines's "National Match"-Style AR is no exception -
Unbranded PSA Flat Top Upper/BCG/Charging Handle
Intlmilco "Commercial"/BHD M16A2 Lower
Brownell's 20" A2 Barrel with XM177-Style Faux Moderator and Grenade Ring
APF Armory Low-Profile Gas Block
Harris S-25C Bipod with No.4 Barrel Mount Adapter & KMW Pod-Loc
Doublestar Aluminum Free-Float Tube Handguard
Choate E-2 Stock with M16A2 Trapdoor Buttplate
Magpul MOE-K Grip
Colt 20rnd Magazine
A.R.M.S. #5 Multibase Mount (Riser)
Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T with Nightforce A107 30mm Scope Rings
This was another tricky one to work on, as the lower was part of a blemished batch and it was very difficult getting a grip and spring detent combination that worked with it. The Magpul MOE-K that I recently picked up ended resolving this problem - the safety selector is now nice and snappy and the angles go aesthetically well with the Choate E-2 Stock.
The Leupold 3.5-10x40mm LR/T was donated off of my Mod H that I've been increasingly bored with (such is the case for SPR builds), and it will likely remain on this rifle at least until we get an AR-10.
I can't reasonably think of much more that either of us want to add to this build, short of perhaps a sling or a shorter bipod. The touch of bronze against the matte blacks, greys, and subtle purples really sells this build for me.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0ad40f964ba58534eb94ce13481c11f0/8a9f16529f30fb70-b1/s540x810/acdad53adf6bdbd369f6bdfdce823e52a28bba0c.jpg)
So here it is, our now-annual AIRSOFT ACTION SUMMER SPECIAL for 2024, and it’s a bumper 106 PAGES with a focus on all things NAMSOFT! While NAMSOFT is a niche area of airsoft, it’s one that a number of the AA CREW very much enjoy and have been associated with for some considerable time; we kick things off with Stewbacca’s look at the venerable M16A1, the latest gas version from VFC, then Bill jumps into his overview of the latest XM177 and Mod 607 AEGs from Double Bell. Then we get into the nitty-gritty of “inspiration and intel” for where to start with NAMSOFT, how to create your loadout, and then in the BIGGEST RED CELL EVER we devote 18 PAGES to 30 MODELS of AEG AND GBB (plus a couple of “extras”!) that are perfect for getting your game into “The Nam”! We round out the theme by looking at “game expectations” in an interview with GUNMAN AIRSOFT, before Stewbacca draws things to an end as he visits HIMALAYA WORKS in Taiwan and checks out their awesome Tigerstripe creations. To close out this special issue we revert back to our now-expected AA LEGION reports, this time detailing LCT’s visit to DARK EMERGENCY in Germany, whilst Rich reports from the latest RIFT AIRSOFT event in the UK, and Miguel tells all about their team birthday game “OP 1 AND 6”” in Portugal! If you fancy something a little different in your “airsoft life”, then this issue has something for everyone, and in the spirit of NAMSOFT we hope to see YOUR “in country” NAMSOFT adventures soon… See you in the long grass; GET SUM! Airsoft Action is FREE TO READ on the Airsoft Action website, plus all these digital publishing platforms: Issuu: Yumpu: Flickread: PocketMags: PocketMags+ (All You Can Read subscription service): Readly (All You Can Read subscription service): Magzter: You can also grab the FREE Airsoft Action app and take your entire library with you, to read whenever you like, wherever you are! What’s Next? Brownells BRN-180…
Brownells absolutely hit it out of the park with their Retro line of AR-based firearms. All of those older style military looking AR-15s like the M16A1 and A2 and the XM177. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Brownells partnered up with PWS(Primary Weapon Systems) to revive the old piston design of the AR-18/180. They named it the BRN-180. Initially offering these in .223 Wylde and .300 Blackout chambering, they have had some slight revisions over the life of the product line. Brownells never sold these as complete firearms, but rather offered the complete upper receiver assemblies in 10.5”, 16” and 18” lengths for the .223 Wylde chambering and .300 Blackout in 10.5”. Brownells had their own lower receiver manufactured to look like the original sheet metal stamped version that the original AR-18 had, but made like a modern AR lower receiver. These also had an integrated rail for mounting of a folding stock. See one of the beauties of this platform is it’s piston driven gas system and dual recoil spring and short bolt/carrier assembly. This allows for the entire action to be kept within the receiver…no buffer tube!

There was a 1st generation design and then later a revised version they called the generation 2. My understanding is that the design changes were slight changes in the attachment of the hand guard as well as to the gas system. Some people didn’t really care for the s shaped charging handle due to interference with certain optics mounting systems, so Brownells later came out with their “sport” version which has just a straight charging handle or rather a knob. One of the other requests from many consumers was an additional caliber, specifically people wanted to see the BRN-180 offered in 7.62x39 for those folks that are fans of AKs and that caliber in particular. Brownells of course listened to their customers and low and behold a new version in 7.62x39 was introduced in 16” length. Among the different caliber options, Brownells also started to offer their complete uppers with a Cerekote finish. The usual ODG and FDE come available every now and again for those looking to do something other than the usual black. Some other companies such as Midwest Industries have developed folding stock assemblies, both retro looking like the original style and more modern looking options. To say the BRN-180 has been well received by both the consumer and industry alike would be an understatement.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8b255206589af7d82f707a1a84667cba/d63b03be6b79db62-a4/s540x810/e5f74d6d72d5f8ca45dba2ab1221f914f6a5ed89.jpg)
The most recent offering by Brownells has to do with the gas system. They offered the SH version which offers a 3rd gas setting on their gas piston. All previous designed offered just 2 gas setting, suppressed and unsuppressed. This new version in only 300 Blackout has a 3rd setting that totally switches the gas system off making it a straight pull bolt action. The also re-designed the charging to better assist when operating in this mode. So what’s next with this gem of a retro firearm system? I like where Brownells is going with offering additional gas port settings… I’d like to see additional gas port settings offered on the other calibers, such as an intermediate gas setting in between the suppressed and unsuppressed to help tune for different suppressor types. Regardless of which direction Brownells takes their BRN-180, it’s bound to be a big hit as it has been so far.

No, yours is good because that's a nice QXL replica and your build actually practices retro AR color theory instead of just being a budget gun with a fixed carry handle.
I'm talking specifically about the people that buy the most milquetoast XM177/653/723/733 clone with cheap black anodizing and use the most garish, shiny hose clamps to secure a fuck-off massive maglite (or something else clonky and obnoxious if they're too poor for a maglite) to the crappiest matte plastic furniture that these builds invariably always have
along with the obligatory chinesium carry handle rail mount and vortex scope rings to hold a budget Comp M2 look-alike if they're feeling extra daring

pic related: me when I see your average "gordy"/"blood diamond" cloner
hose clamps are for hoses. Anything else, with few exceptions, they're a temp solution, and generally not a good one. and they look like shit when they're holding integral parts of your rifle together.
