The above is a reference to xkcd 2501, a comic that describes how experts vastly overestimate how much of their field is common knowledge. In this case, the above is intentionally applying the matter to topology.
In topology, a sphere is defined as the SURFACE of a ball, not the entire thing. Because you can define a position on the surface of a sphere using only two variables (like latitude and longitude on the globe), it can be considered a 2-sphere. If you were to take a circle (specifically the points along the side of the circle, not the entire disc), that could be considered a 1-sphere, since it only takes one variable (the angle) to define where you are on a circle.
In comparison, a 3-sphere would be the surface of a four-dimensional ball. It would take three dimensions to define where a person was positioned on a 3-sphere.
A torus is a donut-shape, and the plural of torus is tori. A solid torus is the entire donut shape, not just its surface. It would take three dimensions to position someone in a solid torus.
A "union" is the addition of two arbitrary things.
So, by taking two solid Tori and gluing them together in the right way, it would be effectively the same as the surface of a four-dimensional ball.
A Klein Bottle is a three-dimensional version of a Möbius Stip. A Möbius strip is a flat area that has been twisted and joined with itself, so that if draw a line on it you will reach every part of it and get back to the start. In that sense it has no 'top or bottom.' For a Klein Bottle (which is impossible to make in real life), you can tile the surface in all directions and cover it all, getting back to the start. In that sense it has no 'inside or outside.'
Orientability is a property of topology. Essentially, for an orientable surface, the idea of 'clockwise' 'counterclockwise' 'left' and 'right' have meaning, because if you are on the surface, no matter how you move, these directions will be the same. This is NOT true for Möbius Strips, because if you follow along the surface, left and right will switch directions. Nor is it true for Klein Bottles.
The decomposition of 3-spheres into solid tori and the non-orientability of Klein Bottles are trivial concepts in topology, but they are completely arcane to the average denizen of the early twenty-first century. They might know what a Klein Bottle is, but almost all of the terms used would be outside their experience.
The poster is well aware of the fact and is making use of a meme based on xkcd 2501. Said comic would be known by a geeky portion of the internet, but not by the average denizen of the early twenty-first century.
The average person probably only knows that the 3-sphere is a union of two solid tori joined along their boundary. And the non-orientability of the Klein bottle, of course.

It is a sad fact of life that everything must come to an end, and the universe is no exception. Based on our current understanding of physics, we have a few good guesses as to what might occur. The universe could cool down to the point where nothing can survive, or it might suddenly collapse in on itself. However, none of these hypothetical ends are as mind bending as vacuum decay.

In this unsettling scenario, a bubble pops into existence somewhere in the universe. Inside the bubble, the laws of physics are wildly different than they are outside the bubble. The bubble expands at the speed of light, eventually taking over the entire universe. Galaxies drift apart, atoms can’t hold themselves together, and the ways that particles interact are fundamentally changed. Whatever form the universe takes after this event certainly wouldn’t be hospitable for humans.

To understand vacuum decay, first we need to understand the vacuum state. For most of us, a vacuum refers to outer space and other places devoid of matter. However, outer space is not really empty. Instead, it contains fluctuating quantum fields that produce the particles responsible for the fundamental laws of physics throughout our universe.

When this space has as little energy as possible, it’s referred to as being in its vacuum state. No matter what, though, those quantum fields are still doing their work holding the fabric of reality together.
We know about 17 particles that come about when these quantum fields are excited, which is just the fun way that physicists refer to a quantum field that has received energy. The photon is an example of one such particle, which we perceive as light and is responsible for electromagnetic radiation like X-rays and microwaves as well.

There are also quarks, which become the protons and neutrons in our atoms. Other particles make different forces, like the strong and weak nuclear force, which ultimately provide the rules for how our universe works.
When the underlying quantum fields that make these particles are in their vacuum states, the universe is stable. By definition, a vacuum state can’t lose any energy — if it could, then the way the fundamental particles work could change as well, meaning our universe could stop working the way it does.

Most of the quantum fields appear to be in their vacuum states, so they are stable, and we are safe. However, measuring these things is very, very difficult, and its possible that one quantum field has yet to reach its vacuum state: the Higgs field.
The Higgs field and its associated Higgs boson are responsible for why things have mass at all. It’s why photons have no mass and why Z bosons have quite a bit of mass (for a quantum particle, at least). As such, it’s very important for how fundamental particles interact with each other.

It’s possible that the Higgs field has become “stuck” at a certain level of energy. Think of it like rolling a ball down a hill — all other fields have “rolled” to the bottom of the hill, but the Higgs field may be stuck in a small valley along the side of the hill, preventing it from reaching the bottom.
If the lowest possible amount of energy a field can have is called the vacuum state, this valley can be considered to be a false vacuum; it seems stable, but it’s actually got more energy than where the Higgs field wants to be.

What could cause the Higgs field to get stuck like this involves quite a bit of math — for the purposes of this article, the important thing to know is that physicists believe it is possible that the Higgs field may have further to go before it can reach its vacuum state.
The problem is, our universe relies on the Higgs field’s properties at its current state. What could push the Higgs field out of its valley? It would most likely take a tremendous amount of energy to do so.

But it could also happen because of a weird effect in the quantum world called quantum tunneling.
Since quantum particles behave like waves, they can potentially pass through a barrier, rather than over it. Think of this like tunneling through the valley wall that’s holding the Higgs field in place.

Everything was falling apart.
You knew that; you could feel him slip from between your fingers, and there was nothing you could do about it.
Unable to sleep, you rolled to your side and watched the man sleeping next to you. His chestnut hair had fallen from his manbun, covering half of his face while the other was buried in his pillow.
Though they were there, clear as day, somehow you never picked up the signs. Neither of you. Instead, you continued, you persevered into hurting one another. Not out of malice or ill intentions, you just thought that was how love worked. You just thought that was the way of the world. Young and foolish, both of you believed you were in love when, in fact, you were just being devoured by pain.
You met Eren four years ago at one of the fraternity parties near your campus. You were a freshman, and he was a senior. It all started with friendly flirting on the veranda while sharing a bottle of cheap wine. Those late-night drunken conversations soon turned into casual hookups and ended up becoming whatever was going on between the two of you.
You had always told yourself that you should’ve noticed that there was something wrong with you. You should’ve known you were bad for each other. You should’ve recognized the telltale signs. Like the time you baked muffins at three a.m. It was so romantic, but you fought the whole time, and ended up going to bed angry at each other. It would’ve been okay if it was something that occurred only once. But then there were other times—plenty of them. Like when you discussed the Higgs boson, or was it chain reactions? You couldn’t tell anymore. Though you knew you were supposed to learn from that conversation and not end up calling each other names and getting into yet another fight in the middle of the night.
You reached out a hesitant hand and pushed back his hair, wondering if this was the right way to love someone. If, in the middle of this chaos you had both created, there was room for happiness. You grazed his cheeks and jawline with the tip of your fingers, trying to find a solution to this dilemma. A way to fix what was broken and damaged.
You thought you were passionate, even though you couldn’t tell love bites from bruises anymore. They meant the same to both of you anyway. You thought it was you against the world, even though you never tried to tend to others wounds. You just continued blaming each other for whatever unhappiness you were dealing with. You thought you were meant to be together, even though all you could remember were the times he made you cry. Or the times you hurt his ego and broke his heart.
You screwed your eyes shut, trying to remember all the moments of intense and pure joy you had shared with him. way before jealousy and possessiveness became a part of your routine. Way before bitterness and disappointment tore you apart. With a broken smile, you recalled the slow dances in the middle of the night to old jazz. You would stand on his shoes with your bare feet and lovingly move across your living room. Those frantic drunken kisses you exchanged under the pouring rain. The lighthearted giggles, the dreams you shared, and the way you used to look at each other.
You took a deep, shaky breath, conjuring yourself to not burst into tears. To not let your weakness show. You begged your eyelids not to give in and let them stream down your crimson cheeks.
Afraid you might wake him up, you cautiously slipped out of bed and locked yourself in the bathroom.
You told yourself that you should’ve known you were a dysfunctional couple when ‘I love you’ became a way of marking territories instead of manifesting feelings. You should’ve known that you were toxic when your bed became a battlefield. When making love was a way to express your frustration and nothing more. You should’ve known that you were done when longing and enamored stares traded places with ones full of hatred and despise.
You let yourself fall to your knees, crying your heart out, crying all the things you would never be, all the happiness you would never experience, and all the hardships you were bound to endure. Pressing your forehead against the cold shower door, you give in to your inner demons and negative thoughts and feelings. You surrender and let the void consume you for good. You had always known that, despite all the odds, your soul was intertwined with his. That even if you tried, you wouldn’t be able to stay away. That you would be leaving half of your being with him if you ever chose to leave. You and Eren were drawn into each other, hypnotized by the darkness you both emitted. You knew that you were far too gone and that it was too late for you to save yourselves.
You kept repeating to yourself that you should’ve left earlier, but you were too addicted, too lost, and too broken to admit that your love had died long ago. That it wasn’t meant to survive and prosper. You were so used to it being poisonous that you thought this was the only possible way to love and be loved by him. You were too numb, too young, and too stubborn to end things. You were so used to you and whatever fragile equilibrium you managed to create over the years.
“But I love him and I need him,” you hiccupped.
The mere thought of not being able to caress his hair as soon as you woke up, not being able to breathe in his comforting scent, not being able to kiss him, and not being able to feel his arms wrapped around you made your heart shatter into millions of pieces.
You were still sobbing when you heard a light knock on the door.
“Is everything alright, love?” you heard him ask from behind the closed door, his voice filled with genuine concern.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” you replied with a wobbly voice.
“No, you’re not. Open up,” he insisted.
“Just leave me alone, would you?” you shouted. “Why can’t you just leave me the fuck alone for once?”
“Because I promised to stick by your side and look after you. Now, open the damned fucking door.”
Your trembling hands reached out and unlocked the door. Unable to look him in the eyes, you brought your knees against your chest and hid your face.
“What’s wrong, love?” he asked, looping his arms around your shaken figure. He buried one of his hands in your hair, scratching your scalp gently. The contact of his skin against yours felt so wrong yet so soothing. The warmth radiating from his body eased your soul but made you want to throw up at the same time.
Not knowing what to do, you allowed yourself to melt under his touch. Nestling your face in the crook of his neck, you let his body tour over you. You let him hold you and share your burden. You let him in once again.
Everything was falling apart, but you knew there was no way out.

Kate Middleton and the Baltimore Bridge collapse were just warm-ups. For conspiracists in 2024, the total solar eclipse taking place on April 8 is their Super Bowl.
Over the past few weeks, social media channels, Telegram groups, and conspiracy-focused message boards have been flooded with every conceivable wild allegation about what will happen when the moon blocks out the sun.
The rare astronomical event has proved incredibly fertile ground for conspiracists to express their wildest fantasies, and they have theorized about everything from the end of the world, to the secret deployment of balloons to poison the population, to occult rituals and even the imposition of martial law to usher in a “new world order.”
Far-right trolls and extremists in particular have been using the total solar eclipse to push their belief that a group of “elites” is using the event as cover to impose new controls on the population. The theory has been promoted by figures including disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn and Sandy Hook shooting conspiracist Alex Jones, who in recent weeks has posted numerous videos and comments about it on his X account, racking up millions of views.
“Major Events Surrounding The April 8th Solar Eclipse,” Jones wrote. “Masonic rituals planned worldwide to usher in New World Order.”
Authorities along the path of the eclipse in the US have issued warnings about loss of cell coverage and electrical outages. Additionally, some towns have already declared an emergency, and National Guard troops have been put on standby. This has made the conspiracists only more convinced, even though the preparations in these towns have often been centered around the huge influx of tourists expected to congregate on April 8. For those deep in conspiracy land, the context doesn’t matter.
“I think [it’s] another test,” one user of the far-right message board known as The Donald wrote this week. “See how many follow orders and how close they are to declare martial law without a fight.”
On Telegram, one well-known conspiracy influencer known as the Health Ranger, who has 75,000 subscribers, wrote that the eclipse “sure would be the perfect cover story if our terrorist government wanted to take down the power grid and cause mass chaos while blocking all citizen communications. Kinda convenient if you want to declare martial law and unleash a dictatorship before Trump can win in November.”
Many conspiracists have also focused on other coincidental events happening on April 8, all of which add to the supposedly portentous nature of the day.
There are dozens of examples being shared online, but among the most quoted involve the fact that the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will be firing up the Large Hadron Collider on that day for the first time in two years. Many online are linking the celestial event to the restart of the device that, more than a decade ago, found the Higgs boson, which many misleadingly label the “God particle.”
If that wasn’t enough, NASA is launching three satellites as part of its Atmospheric Perturbations around Eclipse Path (APEP) mission. Unfortunately for NASA, Apep is also the name of an ancient Egyptian snake god associated with darkness and destruction—a coincidence that conspiracists have decided is relevant. A celestial body known as the devil’s comet will also be visible to the naked eye during the eclipse.
Finally, many have linked the eclipse with the imminent sacrifice of red heifers in Israel, a practice that some Jews and evangelicals believe will variously herald the construction of a Third Temple in Jerusalem, the return of the messiah, or the end of the world.
“Red Heifers from Texas have arrived in Israel where they will be sacrificed during the Solar Eclipse,” the operator of a prominent conspiracy channel on Telegram wrote this week in a post viewed more than 120,000 times. “At the same time, CERN will be opening up demonic portals.”
Videos citing all of these coincidences have been posted by conspiracists—as well as many Christian evangelical pastors and churches—and have amassed millions of views on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok in recent weeks.
“There are many indications that the total eclipse in America on Monday is the start of something big,” a renowned UK-based QAnon promoter told his Substack subscribers in an email on Thursday. “Whether the day itself is obviously epic—Nibiru? ETs? DNA activation?” (Nibiru is a conspiracy-laden reference to a predicted cataclysmic encounter between Earth and a large planetary object.)
Sovereign-citizen guru David Straight has also posited a wild conspiracy called Operation Balloon, claiming that the government, using the eclipse blackout as cover, will deploy balloons filled with poisonous gas. Straight didn’t, however, explain why the government wouldn’t just do this at night, when it’s also dark and people are typically not staring at the sky.
One image showing the path of the eclipse passing over more than a dozen significant landmarks has also been shared widely online. Among the landmarks are the birthplaces of former president Bill Clinton and former vice president Mike Pence; the site of the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio; the site of the 1993 massacre in Waco, Texas; and the location of former president John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
As one UK-based dyed-in-the-wool conspiracist wrote on X last weekend, in a post that has been viewed 7.7 million times: “That’s a hell of a lot of coincidences right there.”
There is, of course, absolutely no evidence to back up any of the conspiracies being outlined by these individuals and groups. But if they are unable, or unwilling, to marvel at a celestial phenomenon that has been enjoyed by humans for centuries, that probably warrants at least some introspection.

Near-Earth asteroid data help probe possible fifth force in universe
In 2023, the NASA OSIRIS-REx mission returned a sample of dust and rocks collected on the near-Earth asteroid Bennu. In addition to the information about the universe gleaned from the sample itself, the data generated by OSIRIS-REx might also present an opportunity to probe new physics. As described in Communications Physics, an international research team led by Los Alamos National Laboratory used the asteroid's tracking data to study the possible existence of a fifth fundamental force of the universe.
"Interpreting the data we see from tracking Bennu has the potential to add to our understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the universe, potentially revamping our understanding of the Standard Model of physics, gravity and dark matter," said Yu-Dai Tsai, lead author on the paper. "The trajectories of objects often feature anomalies that can be useful in discovering new physics."
Given the implications for planetary defense, near-Earth asteroids are closely tracked. The team applied that ground-based tracking data collected before and during the OSIRIS-REx mission to a probe of extensions of the Standard Model of physics, which describes three of the four known fundamental forces of the universe.
Optical and radar astrometric data has helped constrain—or establish to a degree of precision—the trajectory of Bennu since it was discovered in 1999. The OSIRIS-REx mission contributed X-band radiometric and optical navigation tracking data.
"The tight constraints we've achieved translate readily to some of the tightest-ever limits on Yukawa-type fifth forces," said Sunny Vagnozzi, assistant professor at the University of Trento in Italy, and co-author on the paper. "These results highlight the potential for asteroid tracking as a valuable tool in the search for ultralight bosons, dark matter and several well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model."
Anomalies lead to discoveries
The trajectory of a celestial object is impacted by gravity and other factors. Understanding the physics of trajectories can reveal mysteries, especially where there are anomalies in the trajectory. Famously, long before it was actually observed, the planet Neptune was inferred by observations of irregularities in the orbit of nearby planet Uranus.
Using trajectory data and resulting modeling from the tracking of Bennu, the teams' analysis established constraints on a possible fifth force and the role of a potential mediating particle, such as an ultralight boson, in that fifth force. The presence of a mediating particle that might act upon a fifth force would show up in the altered orbit of an asteroid like Bennu, which is why studying the tracking data is so significant for physics.
A new particle such as an ultralight boson might represent an extension of the Standard Model to include dark matter and dark energy, which are strongly suggested by cosmological and astrophysical observations but have not yet been incorporated into the general framework. While dark matter is thought to make up perhaps 85% of the total matter in the universe, science remains unsure as to what particles and forces make up dark matter.
Next stop: Apophis
Tsai and others first explored the probing of fifth-force physics with asteroids with research published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics in 2023, before tackling Bennu. The team plans to build on their Bennu work in the future with the tracking of the Apophis asteroid, which will pass within 20,000 miles of Earth in 2029.
NASA's OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft will approach the asteroid and kick up dust. That and observations of the impact of Earth's gravity on Apophis as it sails by will provide data to continue the search for fifth-force physics.
The team is considering new space quantum technologies and dedicated space missions to improve tracking precision or directly search for dark matter.

Imagine my surprise when Art Bell himself recounts his sighting, and describes the same thing my dad did.
Y'know, while he's in Pahrump, NV and my dad is in like, Morehead City, NC.
Some folks refer to it as an American reverse engineering project called the "TR-3B," occasionally the TR-3B "Manta Ray," and... I haven't seen a lot of paperwork on that. But what I have read starts out with "this is the deepest secret project of all time" followed by "here are specific details about every aspect of it," which... comes across as guff to me.
I fully expect that maybe some of the things Bob Lazar claims to have seen at S4 are the subject of reverse-engineering projects, but if that's the case, then we're not talking about zero-point energy or the higgs boson, we're talking about a stable isotope of Moscovium (Element 115) that's being used by an engine so efficient that it can use the isotope grain-by-grain, and the vessel itself would seem to re-orient its relationship with gravity to move, effectively falling in a chosen direction.
Where the credulity gets strained for me, is the idea that they were shooting for stable E115, and instead landed on the god particle. That is how a lot of cool stuff gets made- sticky notes were an accident, we all know how that goes- but I would need to be shown how they got to the latter in search of the former. I'm not educated enough to make those connections myself, and so it becomes harder to believe without the assistance of documentation.
A similar thing is true about my feelings on various 4chan leakers, /x/ posts, the works. There's connective tissue, but one- my dad was a bullshitter, so I know when someone is playing around, and two, I used to spend all my free time on 4chan until about 2011, I know that one of the biggest motivators on that website is getting attention from your peers. Once the dopamine hits, you don't want to stop posting.
That said, some of these things are really fun reads, and I find myself wondering if it's pure fiction based in bits and pieces of other peoples' UFO stories for the sake of making it sound more realistic, or if it's something closer to a legitimate encounter, with beats reminding me of other encounters in the past.
Anyway- Art Bell, black triangles, Bob Lazar, exotic forms of propulsion, 4chan leaks. That's the winding path we wandered down just now.
I'll try to keep it more cogent in the future, one post, one subject, but in this case I just kind of let my thoughts spiral out until they were done. Next time I'll talk about something less nebulous and more specific.

Gluons are suitably named because they are the 'glue' that binds quarks together to form the likes of protons and neutrons.

They are the carriers of the strong force, one of the four fundamental forces.
Force-carrying particles such as the gluon, as well as the photon for the electromagnetic force, and the W and Z bosons for the weak force, are all massless particles with a quantum spin of 1 and are referred to collectively as 'gauge bosons'.
Gluons and quarks are inextricably linked. Quarks are the elementary particles that form hadrons, which are particles made of two or three quarks. For example, protons and neutrons, which form atomic nuclei, are hadrons, and therefore exist because of quarks and gluons.

Although they are connected with gluons, quarks differ in that their quantum spin is 1/2, and they have a mass, albeit a tiny one (for example, an 'up' quark has a mass of 2.01 MeV, and a 'down' quark is slightly heavier with a mass of 4.79 MeV, which are a fifth and half the mass of a proton respectively; in terms of kilograms they are about 3.56 x 10–30kg).

What quarks and gluons have in common is that neither can exist as free particles, and neither can exist without the other.

Although physicists can't see individual gluons, we know they exist because of indirect evidence that can only be explained by the presence of gluons.

Gluons were first detected in 1979, in an experiment at the Positron Electron Tandem Ring Accelerator (PETRA)(opens in new tab) at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) Laboratory in Germany.
PETRA is a 1.4-mile (2.3-km) long ring, a bit like a miniature version of the Large Hadron Collider except that PETRA accelerates leptons, specifically electrons and their antimatter equivalents positrons, rather than protons and atomic nuclei.
