New Zealand’s SIDEWINDER Reveal 2nd Single “Prisoner” from upcoming ‘Talons’ LP
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
It's been just a minute since we released our compilation Doomed and Stoned in New Zealand, which we were honored to have preserved by The National Library of New Zealand. The current of underground heavy rock and metal is still strong in The Land of the Long White Cloud (or if you prefer, Middle Earth).
Our latest discovery is Wellington five-piece heavy rock beast SIDEWINDER, who today air their latest single "Prisoner" from the upcoming LP 'Talons' (2024), an album that has some monumentally heavy moments (wait'll you hear "The Depths"). We've already gotten a taste of the band's bouncy heavy psychedelic groove with the first single "Disarm The King," and the second showcases their swagger even further with soaring melodic lines, crunchy southern sludge riffage, chugging bass, and workhorse drumming.
Jem Tupe is a powerful vocalist, on the order of Laura Donnelly from King Witch. She can really belt it out with ferocity and it meshes really well with the swampy might of the band's hefty, hefty low-end. Sidewinder is taking no prisoners with this one -- a big sound through and through.
"Prisoner has been a staple for us with our live shows for years," says guitarist Ben Sargent. "It was our opener for a while and quickly became a crowd favourite. We did a few things we hadn't tried before with the recording: like the whisper track through the verses. A lot of the lyrical content refers to Tartarus too which tied in with overall themes of the album. Big riffs, dissonant verses, lead breaks and heavy bridge sections – Prisoner's got it all."
"Prisoner was one of those songs that came together naturally and without too much difficulty," adds guitarist Thomas Rousell (yes, we've got two axemen at the ready with Sidewinder). "Ben had a banging riff, we threw in some rolling verses and great melodies, it all came together to make a killer track. The crowd have been hearing this one for quite some time now, but there's some special bits added to the recording that really lift the track to new heights."
Sidewinder's Talons strikes on August 23rd c/o Wyrmwood Records (pre-order here).
Give ear...
Talons by Sidewinder
SOME BUZZ
Since their formation in Wellington back in 2021, NZ heavyweights Sidewinder have always summoned the biggest riffs and most monumental of grooves possible to carve their own path out from the underground.
In a short space of time, they’ve proven themselves to be an integral part of the burgeoning NZ hard rock/stoner scene and this summer they return to the fray with their eagerly anticipated follow-up to their 2022 debut, Vines.
Due for release this August, new studio album Talons is a breathtaking byproduct of their tight, high-energy performances and sold out shows with bands like Orange Goblin and Sasquatch. A swirling tempest of bluesy southern rock and grunge in keeping with the quintet’s heavyset approach to sonic exploration, it draws on influences that span decades, from the hard-driven strut of Kyuss to the spirited sensibilities of Church of Misery.
Tumblr media
"We’re really excited for this album,” explains guitarist Ben Sargent. “It’s a lot darker and heavier than our last. There are some monster riffs throughout, some great psych and doom sections and plenty of that eerie, swampy blues thing we do too."
Featuring new vocalist Jem Tupe; guitarists Ben Sargent and Thomas Rousell, bassist Sean Fitzpatrick and drummer Grant Lister, Sidewinder is primed and ready to bring it all home in the most spectacular of fashions, with their, “wall of riff-heavy psych, with lashings of delta-blues.”
Produced by James Goldsmith (Beastwars, End Boss, Planet of the Dead) and mastered by Will Borza (Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins), just one listen to "Prisoner" showcases just how heavier, darker, and more powerful they’ve become.

Another Yes Indie’d episode this week: I speak to Jahmal Brown aka Mad Jay Zero about the RPG hustle, meeting Mike Pondsmith, and running big ambitious open table games.
If you’re interested in DIE, the RPG based on the comic by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, the Cannibal Halfling crew have a partial Actual Play up. I’m playing this game right now so expect my thoughts/reactions/anguished wails soon.
Articles and Essays
Jeremy Strandberg posted his “Playing PbtA Games” chapter from the forthcoming Stonetop book for free on his blog. It’s a great resource and introduction to the playstyle.
Though, as he observes, it’s much more applicable to games where everyone is on the same team, rather than Apocalypse World style PvP games.

The classic Lone Wolf series of game books is getting a reprint and might actually get a proper ending.
Interesting opinion: TTRPGs should read like magazines.

Steve Dee calls for a death to agency: “And then one day I just saw it: I don’t ever want to have to decide what my character does, ever again.”
If that sounds interesting, his game The Score is on kickstarter.

YIPPEE NEW VERSE
SPOOKY MONTH VERSE [TITLE WIP]
Annalise is a young woman who lives on the outskirts of town, running Wyrmwood Farm all by herself. It's believed that generations upon generations of her family have run the place, since it's been there for ages.
Although she doesn't go into town much, her friendly and kind nature makes her someone pleasant to converse with. And, every Halloween, she hosts a party on her farm, complete with games, hay rides, a petting zoo, and homemade baked goods that the trick-or-treaters adore.
However, she is rather…odd. She has a hobby of collecting animal bones and shiny trinkets. She always seems to be carrying around a strange, feathered shawl. She's always unnaturally warm. Someone caught her eating a piece of jewelry that somebody dropped. Her nails are sharp, and her teeth are even sharper. And although it's believed her family has owned the farm for generations, she has no old photographs, no records at all of her family. Just herself.
And she's not even involved in a certain group that's been causing trouble. Oh no, she's been here for much longer than them.
She won't bite, she promises…unless someone decides to stick their nose into places that they don't belong.

For the record, I can feel my dice goblinhood slowly reawakening. I have found out about Wyrmwood's collab with Dispel dice and promptly built a cart with $500+ worth of merch, despite having not played in years and haven't ever finished a campaign.
Like, on hand, do I need the dice? No.
Are they pretty shinies? Yes.
Do I deserve to indulge in the little yet expensive things that give me a smidge of enjoyment in this dark world? Sure.

ᗯYᖇᗰᗯOOᗪ
Wyrmwood is a creature commonly spotted in wooded areas. It is only seen at night or in heavily shaded areas, as her skin is sensitive to the sun. It moves just like a dog despite having a humanoid body. It has never been seen moving like a human.
Wyrmwood brings sickness and decay wherever it goes. You can tell if she is around if the nearby vegitation looks rotten but still grows. It has been said that if she crosses your path you will be struck with an unknown illness the next time it rains.
Symptoms of the illness are nausea, vomiting, vertigo, hives, fungal infections, conjunctivitis, and necrosis of the skin. Most victims survive with the illness lasting from one week to one month. The severity varies as well, but most are heavily affected. Many different types of medicine have been used to treat those who become infected, but there is no proven cure.
The only way to confirm if a patient has been affected by Wyrmwood is if there are traces of wormwood in their vomit or excrement. It is easy to identify as the plant seems to be completely unaffected by the digestion process.
Despite how it looks, Wyrmwood is very docile and has never been recorded as acting aggressively. She is an herbavore and mainly eats flowers, shrubbery, and tree bark. It does not actively seek out humans, but does not shy away if one approaches.
According to eyewitness accounts, Wyrmwood is capable of verbal communication. Those who have heard her speak say that it sounds like her voice is directly in their head and that her mouth does not move when she speaks. It is capable of forming full, understandable sentences. The extent of its vocabulary is currently unknown, but it is believed to have the intelligence of the average adult human.
Effects of her illness will begin to show if stood in her presence for more than a few minutes. This, however, appears to be a weaker strain of its usual illness. The effects do not last as long either, usually wearing off within 24 hours after exposure.
If one comes in direct contact with Wyrmwood their skin will break out in intense hives where the contact was made. Prolonged contact results in necrosis that spreads from the point of contact and does not stop until the victim and Wyrmwood stop touching.

Wyrmwoods released a new single from an upcoming third album
Tumblr media
Finnish experimental black metal band Wyrmwoods released a new single Subterrane. The track is taken from the band's upcoming third album Gamma which is set to be released on October 23rd 2020 by Inverse Records. https://youtu.be/XRB4-dxMQ5c The band's sole member Nuurag-Vaarn comments: "Subterrane - like the whole upcoming third album - will be a departure from the last album's more chaotic and lo-fi style and closer to the style of the first album. Less avant-garde and more progressive, with some added influences from bands like Opeth, in addition to all the previous inspirations. Many of the songs, like this one, won't be as primarily Black Metal like previous Wyrmwood's tracks especially last album, but more of a mixture of different metal genres." So over the past month I made a little extra money from work, and decided to splurge on myself by buying a Wyrmwood Complete Dice Tower system! They currently have a Roll the Dice special going on right now, where the wood that you get is randomized, but you get free engravings.  Mine came yesterday, and it’s LOVELY! I was really excited to get it, and recorded an unboxing video, which is now up for your enjoyment!
Many thanks to the folks at Wyrmwood Gaming for their excellent craftsmanship and wonderful products!

The Table That Was Foretold – Wyrmwood Gaming Unveils Prophecy
It’s nicely documented that I adore Wyrmwood Gaming. Not handiest do they craft some of gorgeous wooden gaming accessories to be had, they do so on agenda, and with a number of the best customer support I’ve ever encountered in a business enterprize. They’re honestly excellent humans who have a good grasp of the market and what they could realistically accomplish.
Which is why their present day endeavor has me excited and worried at the same time. Unveiled today at Gen Con, Wyrmwood Gaming has started out taking pre-orders for the Prophecy gaming table. An 88″ x 52″ x 33″ heirloom-first-rate desk, crafted from one of Wyrmwood’s middle sixteen kinds of wood and completed evidently with oil and wax. It capabilities a magnetic rail across the perimeter of the table (each outdoors and interior) and a double-sided hardwood/suede gaming surface that both sits flush with the desk or may be lowered 3″ thru an inner mechanical carry.
The joinery and craftsmanship are what you will expect from grasp furnishings makers Doug and Ian Costello (who created custom furnishings earlier than founding Wyrmwood Gaming with Ed Maranville returned in 2012). And that’s the biggest focus. The Prophecy is a beautiful table before it’s whatever else. But can the company bridge the transition from “maker of lovely gaming accessories” to “maker of stunning gaming furniture?”
What Makes Prophecy Good for Gaming?
Wyrmwood Prophecy Some of the numerous options, together with inlay and GM Shelf. On the right, you could see the joinery that is going into assembling the desk (Image: Wyrmwood Gaming) So what about the bits and portions of the Prophecy that make it a “gaming table?” As I referred to, the gaming floor is two-sided, allowing you to play both on hardwood or suede. You can also purchase gridded battle mat or clear acrylic overlays for the surface which are dry-erase friendly.
The lift mechanism is elective; however, lets you to drop the gaming floor with the aid of up to a few″ the use of a unique crank. Of route, after you opt for the raising mechanism, you’ll want to get a topper as nicely to preserve your video games secure.
An elective topper in matching wood (or a unique wood if you’d like) creates a gasket-sealed, spill-resistant chamber under the table’s surface. You can also pick out up a matching Game Master’s shelf so as to fit over one end of the desk and can help you gather your Game Master Screen gadget (i.E. Fortress of Ultimate Nerdery).
Additionally, you may pick up cup holders and thing holders that paintings with the magnetic rail gadget. They’re nice if not a piece fundamental. I’ll be very curious to look what extra components are made to be had once the Prophecy takes off.
Wyrmwood Prophecy Component trays slot into the magnetic rail around the perimeter (Image: Wyrmwood Gaming) How Much Does a Wood Table Cost If a Wood Table is Made of Wood?
Each desk will come fully assembled (unless you request bolt-on legs to lessen the transport charges) and will be shipped thru white-glove shipping (a hefty $500 to $1,200 charge, which continues to be being finalized).
While we speak me numbers, let’s get this out of the manner – the Prophecy gaming table is Wyrmwood’s maximum expensive product so far. For a base table in Red Oak, the value is $5,000. Fancier woods, of direction, fee greater, starting from $5, four hundred to $13,2 hundred to the wallet-puckering “Contact Us.” The base table is appropriate and gets you the magnetic rail, but that’s it. There’s no raise mechanism (that’s an extra $1,000), no accessories, no topper. If you have been to create a “base stage” table with all of the add-ons it might appear something like this:
Red Oak Table – $five,000 Lift mechanism – $1,000 Topper – $1,000 Master Shelf – $a hundred and fifty Battlemat Overlay – $250 Component Trays (4) – $a hundred and twenty ($30 every) Cup Holders (four) – $one hundred eighty ($forty-five every) Shipping – $500 (minimum) For the least highly-priced wood choice, that puts the total at $8,2 hundred. Now, what if you selected the most highly-priced listed alternatives in Purpleheart?
Purpleheart Table – $13,200 Lift Mechanism – $1,000 Topper – $2,800 Master Shelf – $400 Battlemat Overlay – $250 Component Trays (4) – $400 ($one hundred each) Cup Holders (4) – $480 ($a hundred and twenty every) Shipping – $500 (minimal) That’s a grand general of $19,030!
As you may see, selecting a greater uncommon timber affects the rate of all components and increases the grand general exponentially. Either way, it’s a hefty fee to pay for a chunk of furniture, even one as first-rate because of the Prophecy.
That’s why Wyrmwood is imparting a couple of various payment techniques. One choice, and the option that gets you your desk quicker is Milestone Payment, where you pay 1/2 the whole cost up to the front, with the opposite half due upon delivery (a yr from preliminary price). You can also choose to pay $1,000 down on your new table with the Experience Pre-Payment plan, after which pay 24 same monthly payments at the remainder (around $300 in my tricked-out Red Oak example). The capture is that Wyrmwood doesn’t begin building your table until they receive 12 payments and will best deliver the table after they acquire the final charge a year after that. So it’s easier to price range; but you’ve were given to be very, very affected person.
Wyrmwood Prophecy The lifting mechanism is elective but should be chosen while you order the table (Image: Wyrmwood Gaming) If you’re quick, you can get one of the first 12 tables to be shipped out subsequent March (however simplest in case you use their 2-payment choice). Once those spots are taken, Wyrmwood Gaming will take pre-orders for further 30 tables for “Milestone Payment” customers, to be shipped in September of 2018.
Additional records (with PDFs that detail the procedure and extra granulated pricing/wood alternatives) along side the pre-order hyperlinks may be observed at the Prophecy web page: https://wyrmwoodgaming.Com/prophecy-2/.
Wyrmwood Gaming Prophecy Prototype desk at Gen Con 2017 (Image: Dave Banks) I’ll be protecting the Prophecy more as the first gadgets enter production and will have extra Wyrmwood Gaming news quickly. If you’re at Gen Con, make sure to swing by their booth to test out the prototype table they’ve on a show.
